COA 7 vs Canon
COA 7: survivors see hallucinations of what they want due to fungus, remove their masks, then get infected by the abyss
Canon: survivors see hallucinations + have their memories changed by Orpheus’ drugs (made via Delphi ferns), allowing Orpheus to manipulate them for his experiments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both Orpheus and the Abyss manipulate everyone (and make them drop their guards)
One infects via fungus. Another infects via drugs made from Delphi ferns.
Both cause hallucinations.
Both promise to give survivors what they want (whether that’s money, finding the people or things they’re looking for, or whatever)
What we see happen to the COA 7 crew is kind of similar to what Orpheus is doing with Kevin. Trying to make him think Angelina is still alive, which is something Kevin wishes were true. And we see how Kevin's memories are already fairly "blurry".
Tumblr media
Considering my earlier discussion about Oracle, Orpheus' drugs, and Yidhra, I wonder if how we see the COA 7 crew essentially trapped in those hallucinations of their dreams coming true could parallel what might’ve happened to some of the canon participants after their games (immersed/consumed by a dream then disappear, like what we see with Eli, who’s message says he was made to “sleep in an ‘absolute’ ending” and then he faded).

COA 7 Theories/Notes
Tumblr media
In COA 7, it seems like everything became infected after Melly returned via the spaceship from Yuggoth.
We do see her carrying something in her hands on the spaceship as she's returning, and we know from her design notes that she was already being manipulated to a degree by the plant thing on her head.
Tumblr media
So, we know Melly's is likely already infected.
Based on how the last thing we hear from Binary Star in the original COA 6 trailer is “You can now listen to The Whisperer in Darkness among the stars”, before he starts walking towards Yuggoth, maybe Melly listening to these whispers further infected her. If anything, in the story Whisperer in Darkness those that have their brains extracted and transported to Yuggoth usually do come back changed due to what they saw/experienced, so it wouldn’t be unbelievable Melly came back changed too. (There’s also how the word “sacrifice” to Yuggoth was frequently repeated with COA 6, and as Melly was with the others, it's possible this did happen in a fashion and why she might be helping it.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s possible the only reason she was able to return to the planet was because she was allowed to, by Binary Star or otherwise.
I also notice during COA 6, during Chapter 2 outlining the story of COA 6, it uses the term “fuzzy memories”. If she didn’t quite remember what happened, that’d likely not help the situation. Or maybe that’s how she was able to return and/or be manipulated by Binary Star/Yuggoth to bring infection back with her. Who knows.
Tumblr media
I find it curious how the city looks fine up until Melly crash lands (and the thing her hands disappears at the same time). Once she does is when she sees Yuggoth and the city consumed by the abyss (I wonder if everything would’ve been fine had she not brought the infection/abyss back with her).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tentacles attacking the city look to be the same ones Binary Star had around him, and since she'd been with him right before she returns to the planet, it does feel like she might've brought them/the abyss with her.
Tumblr media
It’s also interesting how we see the city (before it was ruined) in the daytime as Frederick recalls it. Metropolis we know was a city of perpetual night.
Tumblr media
And speaking of COA 5, it’s curious back then how Pirate Radio was telling people to "Wake up. This city is eating you alive". Considering Melly's vision when she returns, that description seems apt.
Tumblr media
There doesn’t seem to be a good explanation for the day vs night. Both before the COA 6 crew and after Melly crash lands, everything is still taking place at night. It’s possible the sun did come back but these events took place at night time, but there’s no way to know for sure with the info we’ve been given.
We know Pirate Radio and the others did defeat Eternal Aurora, but we don’t know for certain what happens to them afterwards.
Tumblr media
Maybe the sun did come back once she was defeated, though we don’t know for sure the sun would return just because they defeated Eternal Aurora. It’s possible that the sun did return and the events in COA 6 just took place at night anyways. But if it didn’t, why would Frederick remember the city in the day?
As it’s likely Metropolis was located in the Dreamlands, if it was somehow transported to the Dreamlands, maybe what Frederick is seeing is before this happened. Though I’m uncertain about this. COA 4 makes it seem like the companies purposefully came to the Dreamlands to do their experiments via the races they hold, meaning they could’ve set up all the structures and such for the race, though as the “real controller” of the race is Yidhra, it’s also possible she was the one to provide everything (structures and setting and all).
Tumblr media
This means either Metropolis could’ve been built purposefully by the companies (specifically the energy corporation) to perform further experiments, or Yidhra as the owner of the Dreamlands could’ve made it herself, and the corporations sent everyone into the Dreamlands to that city the same way they sent the racers to the Dreamlands to do the races. I don’t think there was any need to transport a city from the real world to the Dreamlands (and anyways, based on precedent, it seems more likely people were sent into the Dreamlands and the city was already there, either prebuilt or made by Yidhra, rather than any ability yet shown to transport things from the real world to the abyss. Based on COA 3 and Netherwalker, it seems like the opposite is more likely).
So if this city wasn’t originally in the real world, that eliminates the option of this being the city in the past.
Is it possible it’s a different city?
Well at least for the city Melly sees at the end of COA 6 (and thus also the city she was at before they launched their ship to Yuggoth) this is unlikely since the tower matches exactly with the Metropolis tower (especially based on the top of the tower and the lights coming from it, but at least for me what I found most convincing, even if a bit silly, was how the outline of some of the boards on the side of the tower Melly sees in COA 6 matches the shapes of the ones we see in the COA 5 music video).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is an obvious lack (or at least noticeable reduction) of neon lights (or any Eternal Aurora imagery) throughout the city Melly is looking at. This could thus further help imply Eternal Aurora was defeated, especially as it was the neon lights (and “mindless entertainment”) corrupting people.
Tumblr media
To be specific, it seems clear that Melly at least came from Metropolis and returned there when she crashed. It’s harder to say if the city the COA 7 group is the same city, due to everything’s ruined, but for now we’re assuming the city we see in COA 6 is the same ruined one in COA 7, especially due to Melly’s presence in both COA 6 and COA 7.
At least, since we know Melly saw the city destroyed at the end of COA 6, that would explain the city we see in COA 7 being in ruins. It almost even looks like there is a train on 1 of the destroyed overpasses, like Eternal Aurora’s from COA 5.
Tumblr media
There are some new changes in the COA 7 city, including things that kind of remind me of smoke stacks (though I know they aren’t spewing smoke) and what looks like a circle of towering walls. There are also a lot more overpasses than what we were shown in the COA 5 trailer.
The smoke stack tower things make me think of COA 2 a bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of similarities with COA 2, Steam City, Metropolis, and the city Frederick is remembering all had blimps
Tumblr media
They also all had similar mountain ranges around them (and COA 4 had a mountain racetrack too)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(And looking back, the film Luca is watching is very similar to where/how we see the area Melly and the COA 6 group take off from)
Tumblr media
And with the ruins we see of the COA 7 city and the wastelands around it reminds me how Wasteland Traveler (and somewhat the backstory for COA 2) implied the city was surrounded by “wasteland”.
Tumblr media
Considering those smoke stacks and circle of walls are in better shape than the rest of the city, those things likely came up after the city fell to ruin. For what purpose, I’m not sure yet.
Maybe Pirate Radio and the others were still in the city when Melly returned and destroyed along with the city. However, we know Pirate Radio’s goal was for everyone to “wake up”. This combined with how Metropolis was likely located in the Dreamlands, once they defeated Eternal Aurora and the corporations (least the Energy co.), maybe they were able to “wake up” and leave the city as well as the Dreamlands entirely. Well, at least those that either weren’t completely turned into robots or were convinced enough by the COA 5 group to leave.
We know it is possible to leave the Dreamlands, as Highway Cavalier in COA 4, as well as all the other racers, did this after defeating Molten Hound, as the extended backstory says they returned to “reality”, with Highway Cavalier implied to have returned last, after he won the race, defeated Molten Hound, and was rewarded by Yidhra with a “powerful life force” for his victory.
Considering Pirate Radio literally describes their current situation prior to defeating Eternal Aurora as “Trapped in captivity in this city forever”, as well as the repeated emphasis on “waking up” when combined with the city being in the Dreamlands, I think they’d want to escape “captivity”, leave the city, and wake up back in reality.
Tumblr media
And as I explained before how Metropolis is likely only in the Dreamlands, that could imply Melly and the others may still be in the Dreamlands, but Pirate Radio and a number of the others in Metropolis might’ve left before Melly returned and the city was destroyed.
It’s also possible Metropolis isn’t in the Dreamlands, though that doesn’t leave out the possibility the COA 5 group left before the city was destroyed. We know Pirate Radio lived at a “deserted port”, and a port would be one way to leave.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another random thought, but the explosion from the crash of Melly's ship was fairly big. I don't think it left as big a hole as we see in the COA 7 trailer of the ruins of the city, but I do wonder if that still could've been around the same spot (Melly was outside of the city when she crashed, and there aren't any buildings immediately near the crater the COA 7 crew are approaching. I wonder if Hastur and/or everything in that hole could be from or at least related to what Melly brought back from Yuggoth, just now it's had a lot of time to spread and grow).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, I'm not going to talk about what Melly may have brought back from Yuggoth, or about mycelium, or about Yuggoth and Migo (these 2 I at least already discussed briefly with COA 6 research) or any of those kind of details.
I wasn't going to do anything for COA 7 honestly (I'm not gonna explain besides I didn't care for this one), but decided to at least cover the bare minimum of the plot due to how I had a few ideas I had.
(The result for COA 7 is similar to COA 6 anyways. The survivors take a risk, explore, but lose to Wu Chang/Hastur, and either die or are infected.)
Honestly, I'm going to say COA 6 Alva predicted/knew what was going to happen. In both COA 6 and COA 7, the group "venture" "deep" into an "unknown" area, but end up bringing back "damnation".
