i will cashapp $10 to the first person who can name 3 real life harmful things bob bryar did without accusing him of thought crime
#wordvomit#this isnt to say the things he said or thought are good or justifiable- just to point out that he never ACTED on them in any capacity#meanwhile he is being socially prosecuted to the extent as if he has. during such an awful time for his loved ones who are the only ones#who will be exposed to all this hate. possibly including the members of mcr#i understand thinking the things he said are sick and disliking him and being uncomfortable at the discussion but.#i dont understand how you can honestly morally justify half of the stuff people have been saying- like 'he deserved it' and whatnot#without contradicting the 'thoughtcrime isnt real' sentiment i see get thrown around so often ?#isnt the Overarching issue with conservatism as a whole not the idea of . moral purity and puritanism and#'everyone. everything and every idea ontologically different from mine and my communities-#they are objectively worse and i deserve power over them as retribution for what they've done'#ie colonialism. racism. yadda yadda#these are false comparatives bc discrimination based on unchangeable factors vs backlash to opinion is vry different but i still think#the core idea of 'no one who has not enacted harm deserves harm wished on them' kinda shines through it all#and there is a semantic debate to be had about the definition of harm but in this case i am using it to mean anything more Tangible#something that has a wider influence than 'the people who read/heard it were upset and uncomfortable' yea ?#im been waffling about this a lot and why it hasnt been sitting right with me as someone who is incredibly uncomfortable with a lot of his#final statements#it just reminds me so much of my dad and what ive watched him go through#as well as other people in my community during the pandemic#i cant disconnect myself from the humanity of that. especially while condemning him for lacking humanity

Not to mention I think some of it is also framing like ‘you squash a slave rebellion’ when you’re presented as being unambiguously a good person by current morals is a bit different than ‘you squash a slave rebellion’ if you were presented as some random mercenary or whatever. Like doing fucked up stuff when you’re in a game where it’s expected (Ie one where you’re a solider or a conqueror) is one thing, and there’s definitely a discussion about how many games don’t bother framing it with any moral ambiguity (the player character is always right, it rewards you for killing moon enemies, yadda yadda), but I do think it’s a bit different with having your schoolchildren hero in a setting only mildly removed from a current, modern day setting and stage do it and be framed as a good thing.
Like in undertale, you can kill everyone, but the game responses to it in an exploration of what that means for the environment and setting of the story. You can do what you want, but it still has consequences. There’s no indication the hp game will do the same.
I have 0 idea if any of this makes sense, I’m not trying to be high horse about this at all bc there’s plenty of bad, stupid games I like but I do think people who are commenting about the nature of this game aren’t being concerned for no reason, especially bc of how it seems to directly mirror the uk’s colonial past that was happening right alongside the setting of the ho game w 0 awareness
Don't worry it makes complete sense, and again, I agree. In fact that was something I explicitly was wondering if someone would point out when I reached for the first example in my mind (ie undertale).
But this is a different conversation than the one clearly being had in that other string where what started as a very valid point of "you're bad for wanting to seriously pay money for this" devolved into the usual circlejerk of "look how cool I am for not liking harry potter". Especially considering this is still a game unreleased.
Like I said, it goes both ways with extremes. Is it highly likely that hogwarts thing will be a trashfire of antisemtisim, transphobia, racism, and oh so many more wonderfully jk rowling things? Absolutely. Is that a reason to treat anyone who so much as engages with it, even privately and without paying, as being someone who actively endorses it? No. No it isn't, and that kind of thinking reminds me, as someone who remembers the 2000s, of the Jack Thompson style "looking at a copy of Doom will turn your child into a devil worshipper" rhetoric.
