in full transparency, last night i asked for you all to share the things you’re missing and grieving. I thought I could hold a place on this blog for the collective grief we are all feeling, even for one ask session. but it became too much. everyone is properly upset and I apparently don’t have capacity right now to offer words of support to all. And I don’t necessarily think that I need to. It’s okay that this sucks. There is a moment of collective grief we’re all feeling, we are all missing different things. It’s okay not to compare your loss to someone else’s. A loss felt by you is still a loss. We’re all coping, yeah? but i did read all of your responses, and I’m putting them under the cut if anyone wants to read. I hope you do give it a read because it does affirm that we aren’t alone.

anonymous: i'm grieving the loss of my racing season. i didn't think it was as devastating as it would be but losing all the work that my team put in for years to get where we are today and losing the chance to prove ourselves at nationals.... has been just that... devastating. i can say though that this quarantine has brought the team close together and i am finding myself. thank god i have the ability to but i am looking at myself as a person instead of just a student, athlete, etc. and figuring out myself in the process. whether that means hobbies, what to do with my future, or just what fulfills me, i'm learning a lot of things about myself. also the weather was gorgeous out today and i was able to get a walk with my dad in after my workout. beautiful!!! also made banana bread and have a zoom call with my teammates for sunday breakfast tomorrow. (GOOD VIBES!!!)

anonymous: Due to quarantine I can’t see my significant other for an indeterminate amount of time since we’re long distance and I’m an at-risk person. We’re trying to fill the distance with FaceTime calls but it’s still really hard, mostly because we’re just stuck and don’t know for how long :(

anonymous: I used to volunteer at an op shop every sunday with two of my favourite people. The customers sucked, but we played disney and had a blast and would sometimes do dinner or games after it. I miss it so much. To make up for it, we send regular pictures of our pets, do video calls on sundays and play an online pictionary type game to laugh at each other's terrible drawing skills :')

As an autistic girl, communication can be hard and it's easier when you are with three people, cause you can just let them talk and no one focuses on you the entire time. You can just listen and not talk for a bit.

Which of course then got cancelled, and may be pulled from the season completly if we can't reopen by June. So I have all of these fabric samples and sketches that hurt my heart to look at but that I can't bear or risk throwing out.

@empiresprincess I’m grieving making music, running a musical, being with young weird enthusiastic youths, and my health. Also seeing my mom or a few my more beloved friends. I’m snuggling my dog, watching my fav youtuber, rewatching comforting media, trying to take care of myself and to let others know when I really need help. anonymous: i was just finishing my second quarter at ucla when everything got shut down, and like.. it kinda sucks. i busted ass to get accepted to my dream school, pulled all nighter after all nighter at community college and finally transferred to ucla. i was JUST starting to feel like i had a place there. winter quarter was when i made some really good professor friends, started to get into the swing of things, adn that was when i realized i genuinely WANTED to go to grad school in the uk and get a phd and one day teach. then overnight im back home struggling w online classes and it just feels like im back to square one? they haven't cut our tuition costs either, and i feel like im paying so much for a whole experience, which now is just zoom university. ;~; i know its not the end of the world, but its sad and i miss my roommates. still, i guess it could be worse. i feel bad for the seniors who are ending their ucla journey with this. also my boyfriend and i have been doing long distance for nearly a year, and our one-year anniversary is coming up in a few days. i really thought we'd at least be able to spend that together, but he's an international student and he had to go back to india bc of covid. ;~; i miss him a lot and im terrified that the increased distance/time difference will cause us to just fizzle out. its not like we don't love each other a lot, but such limited contact (he can't ft bc his dad doesn't know about us, and so we only call like 3 times a week for 10 mins) makes it hard.. i haven't seen him in almost three months now, and it's just sad, even though i know its not either of us's fault. anywho!! this got really long; sorry about that!! in the grand scheme of things this isn't that bad though, so i'm trying to grieve the losses (and the loss of being back home, oof!) while still keeping an eye out for some of the good things to come. take care linds i hope you're safe and doing better

anonymous: On one level I am literally grieving the loss of a family member to the virus, but on another I am grieving the loss of my usual life (I had to move back in with my parents temporarily after being on my own for 4 years) and my student (our governor just announced that schools are closed for the rest of the year and I feel like I never ever got to say good bye). I've been filling the void by writing fanfic, but even that has been hard as I have no privacy anymore. I keep getting interrupted.

Project Management as a Career Path for PhDs

I’ve always liked a challenge. Looking back, maybe that’s why I did a PhD in the first place: it seemed like a really difficult and worthwhile challenge to take on! Now, 16 years after completing my PhD in Medieval Studies, I work as a project manager for an ethical and sustainable bank. I work closely with managers in the bank to deliver major improvements in products and services for our customers, on time and on budget – quite a challenge in fact! I also run a blog where I write about PhD career options outside academia, and my readers often ask me about project management as a post-academic career path. So here are my thoughts on getting into project management after your PhD, as well as how the kind of multidisciplinary training advocated by Integrative Academic Solutions can benefit you further.

Project management as a discipline is great in so many ways: it gives you a framework for making and delivering something new from scratch. You get a fantastic feeling when you take an idea on a scrap of paper and see it through all the stages of development until customers are actually using it! Like many project managers, I’m trained in the PRINCE2 project management methodology, which is now a worldwide industry standard. But I was running projects in industry for 5 years before I was PRINCE2 trained, relying upon transferable skills that I’d acquired during my PhD and post-doc years. Project management is a skill that I think PhDs can be very good at; after all, they’ve already run a multi-year research project from inception to delivery, managing budgets and resources to a schedule. A qualification from a national project management organization such as the Association for Project Management (APM) or the Project Management Institute (PMI) can be worth acquiring when you move out of academia, as it helps to formalize your experience and shows recruiters that you’re a project management professional.

One thing I noticed after I’d worked in project management for some years was that while it can be great in ‘green field’ circumstances – for instance opening up a brand new office or launching a completely new product – making changes to live systems and services are much more challenging. For example, we don’t have the luxury of closing the bank for a few days while we do a major software upgrade or swap over to a new piece of equipment – every change has to be made with minimal interruption to normal service, rather like handing over the baton in a relay race.

In fact, in the business world and public sector, the requirement to integrate shared components between two systems, to gently bring two cogs together so that they mesh without loss of speed, is becoming increasingly important. To be able to do this well is more of an art than a science. Unlike relay teams, who can practice their handovers numerous times before the big event, many business changes are unique, one-off events. There’s often no possibility of a dry run – you just have to get it right first time! I’ve been involved in some major integration projects in my career ranging from a large-scale data change for the UK government’s national travel information service to switching the bank’s payment system over from 3 day payment turnaround to a 1 day turnaround. These projects certainly raised the ante in terms of a personal challenge! The question I sometimes reflect on is, where did I get the experience and even the confidence to do this kind of integration work?

I personally believe that I gained a lot from the interdisciplinary approach which I learned when studying for my PhD. In the field of Medieval Studies, the idea is to make use of multiple disciplines – History, Literary Studies, Archaeology and Art History – when researching particular issues and questions relating to the medieval period in Western Europe. I spent seven years in this environment, and I grew used to thinking in an integrative way: how could this piece of evidence bring another perspective to support or challenge what I already knew? I don’t have much experience of interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approaches in fields outside the Humanities, but I’m sure this approach also holds true elsewhere. So when I have to figure out how to switch over to a new system without loss of service, I can rely upon my ability to think in multiple dimensions and work out the best approach to take.

So in summary, if you’re thinking about your career options outside of academia after your PhD, by all means consider project management for a varied and challenging job! You can confidently market yourself as a professional project manager who’s decided to take on a new challenge by moving from academia into business or the charity sector. A formal qualification in project management can really help with this. And, as you progress, you’ll find that experience of a multidisciplinary academic environment pays dividends when it comes to working in the challenging area of business integration projects.

3 months into 2020.

Took this picture about a year and a month ago when I was happily basking in the natural sunlight, enjoying the comfort of my floral sheets and the cool spring air in my very cozy, humble room in 6 Treorchy; probably a week and a bit after I got news that I merely borderline passed one of my modules and was terribly upset and confused with that.

It’s been a while since I sat myself down to write about all that’s been going on and hence here I am, on a Saturday afternoon, locked up in my room, forcing myself to process thoughts and happenings to pen it all down for reflection and reminiscing + reminding purposes in the future.

Before we get started with all that’s been happening in 2020, I want to start off with where I last left off in 2019. Second half of 2019 looked a little like completing degree with a second-upper - something that I was so concerned about not achieving since the beginning of my transfer to Cardiff. Truth be told, growing up, my mind was always set on obtaining a First for my degree studies but my later years in Cardiff taught me that my pursue of education is more than the grade I obtain. June and July consisted of having my younger brother over in the UK, saying goodbye to my beloved housemates and city that I called home for 2 years, taking a 13 hour flight home and celebrating the marriage of my older brother. The later half of July and the beginning of August looked a little like seeking career advise from people, looking out for openings, submitting job applications and attending job interviews.

Then, a trip to the US for a month. Ask me 10, 5, 2 years ago if I’ll ever get the opportunity to visit US in my lifetime - no, will be my definite answer. But hey, God is a God of surprises and there I was, flying across the globe for around 24 hours (still a nightmare), visiting a couple of states in the US including Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. The trip to US was another eye-opening one, seeing scenes from American TV shows come alive, breaking down the typical stereotypes I had of Americans and coming across a variety of people from, or living in The States.

And to all Malaysians, welcome home.

A month later, I started my first proper full-time employment in a firm that I would never have thought of applying to, with the responsibilities looking like something I would never have thought of a year ago. Two months into the job, I got news that my team lead - the manager that recruited me in and I wanted to work with, tendered her resignation and there we were, a team left without a lead, which somewhat made me feel like an orphan. Fear and uncertainty came to me with that decision of hers but I’m glad that 3 months later, I’m still holding on to this job and more often than not, enjoying bits and pieces of the job (and the rest of the team of course!).

28th March 2020 - Day 11 of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia due to the rapid outbreak and severe spike in COVID-19 cases.

Fast forward 3 months later, here we are, on the final week of March in 2020, experiencing a partial lock-down due to COVID-19. “A crisis like never before in our lifetimes”, many have said. Personally, the severity of this pandemic escalated before I could properly comprehend what was happening. What started off with a “virus outbreak in Wuhan, China” suddenly came knocking not just on our doors, but all around the world. Truth be told, when news of the virus became a little more viral due to the increase in cases in China, I myself couldn’t really be bothered because my ignorant and selfish self never thought that it would have affected us in any way. The sympathy might have been there but the empathy was definitely not because I could not understand nor put myself in the shoes of those being affected in China back then. Now, seeing the realness of the severity of this pandemic, the fear and uncertainty actually gets a lil’ overwhelming.

I know that different people have different thoughts about this whole pandemic and partial lock-down situation (which is now extended for another 2 weeks), but here are some of mine that I’ll like to pen down for remembrance and reflective purposes (as shared at the beginning of this post).

Foremost, this whole situation has definitely made me think about life. It has made me really ask myself, if it really is ttg (time to go), have I done enough here on earth - or rather, what have I done given the time I have had here, that would weigh up in the span of eternity?

If decades of life can be taken away in just an episode of pandemic that might last as short as days, weeks or months, what actually really matters in life?

A pandemic like this has reminded me that this virus spares no one - regardless of age, gender, nationality, skin colour, religion and social economic status. Yes, those that are more privileged might not be indirectly affected as much because of accessible health care/essential needs, good supply of food etc etc. But, for those who are directly involved - who unfortunately contracts the virus, this virus doesn’t look at individuals and go “hey, you’re rich, I’ll pass” or “you’re white, I’ll look for someone else”. The realization of this just reminded me that at the end of the day, we are all equal, we are all merely, humans - neither one more superior than the other.

Through this pandemic, I have also thought a bit more about profession/career. Currently, the front-liners are those in the medical profession - doctors, nurses, lab staff etc. Doctors especially, is one of those professions that you grow up thinking would earn you a good amount of money (possibly just a strong stereotype) but who would have known and foresaw, that for, and in, such a time as this, it would also put you in such a sacrificial and risky position - to the point of possibly giving up your life for others. Having been thinking about long-term career goals over the past months and year, this has re-emphasized and amplified to me the importance of purpose in a career choice when, and if you are fortunate enough to be given the luxury to choose yours.

In regards to the partial lock-down or better known as the MCO, it has made me ask myself whether what I probably would have been doing on a day-to-day basis if this MCO had not happened would’ve been more beneficial. Apart from the sufficient amount of time spent on social interactions and maintaining healthy relationships with others, could I be spending time on things more beneficial - picking up new skills, reading, staying in with family, spending more time on the Word?

Following that, something that I saw online this week hit home hard - “It’d be really sad to come out of the end of this with just more screen time. Why not more prayer time, more quiet time, more worship time, more time with God? You’ll never regret sacrificing other things to go deeper with God. He deserves our time, not just the leftovers.” Dad has been constantly reminding each one of us to be spending this extra time to dig deeper into the Word - but let’s be real here, I’ve been failing, badly. At the beginning of this week before the extension was announced, I thought to myself that I might have just wasted 2 weeks not fulfilling what could have been done and was a tad bummed about it but I think (though of course not too glad about it), the extension was personally God’s way of giving me a second chance - two extra weeks, to make time for things that are of kingdom value.

Finally, I just want to take this opportunity to express gratitude and to continue praising. Unlike many, I acknowledge that I am blessed because throughout this period - I am surrounded by family, there has been a constant provision of (good) home-cooked food, I have shelter above my head and a comfortable space to live/be in, I have access to technology, I am still holding on to my job, I have yet to experience a pay-cut or asked to take unpaid leave; and no, I do not deserve this, this I know. Grace, the free and unmerited favour of God, is what it really is.

If you ask me where God is in all these, I am very tempted to say, I don’t know. But as cliché as it might sound, the truth is still the truth. Though you and I might not see it, He is amidst and above all that is happening. We might not be able to make sense of all that is going on, but we need to remember and hold on to the nature of who He is. He is sovereign, He is faithful, He is Love, and He is good. And for that, we will continually choose to praise. :)

Stay strong, stay safe, stay hopeful. This too, shall pass. ❤️🌈

The Diamond Casino Heist is GTA Online’s most exhilarating score and an exercise in self-parody • Eurogamer.net

In one of the opening missions of GTA Online’s latest update, heist aficionado and lovable oaf Lester talks about how he was a good kid before he played Street Crimes Gang Wars, the in-universe version of Grand Theft Auto. As the bassline hums in the background, he starts to ramble about the gun-toting opportunists trying to lift your cargo, a set of arcade cabinets necessary to kickstart a run-down arcade business, a front for the game’s latest (and greatest) heist. “They must be gamers,” he says.

A walking parody of all things but especially itself, minutes later GTA Online treats me to a radio advert for Shark Cards, the game’s infamous microtransaction system that has made it the most profitable entertainment product of all time. Shutting my car door after a successful delivery, I get my usual daily text from Agent 14 about purchasing a million-dollar Mobile Operations Center to help with the efficiency of my Gunrunning business, one of many plates that need spinning if I’m to stay afloat in this demanding second life. I don’t even want the unnecessary vehicle but my brain, falling prey to the marketing machine, wonders whether completing this latest big score will afford me the currency necessary to get him to stop nagging me.

A packed-out patch for a six-year-old live service, The Diamond Casino Heist is designed to turn heads, all the way down to the balance tweaks that players have been begging for. The greatest issue addressed concerns the most hated (and loved) vehicle introduced in Online’s history, the Oppressor Mk 2.

Here I am posing with my very own Oppressor, which I definitely don’t use to blow up mortals when I’m navel-gazing.

For the uninitiated, the Oppressor is GTA Online’s forbidden fruit, a piece of powerful technology introduced to this virtual society without proper consideration, one that Rockstar can’t take back now that players have adopted it. A gateway to sin and loss of naivety, this flying motorbike can cross the map in minutes and has homing rockets bolted to the front, making it a virtual nihilist’s wet dream. It’s a four million dollar chrome-wrapped beacon of wealth and power that makes most of Online’s most difficult missions laughable.

Rockstar has stuck a five-minute timer on summoning this griefing machine, as well as supposedly reducing phone notifications (I haven’t really noticed) and limiting the ‘Kill Yourself’ command, making it harder to leave this late-capitalist dystopia on your own terms. This is for your own good though – it’s to address a common phenomenon where griefers would kill you and then shoot themselves to balance out their K/D and avoid punishment from Rockstar’s all-seeing eye of Sauron. At this point, it’s impossible for Rockstar to cut out the bad behavior at its root, but a few slaps on the wrist might refocus players into less trivial pursuits.

Speaking of which, now that the Arcade is set up I’m able to start preparing the heist, an innovative, multiple-phase ordeal that is nearly 20 missions long if you fulfill every optional detail. Crews will have to first scope the casino to see what information they can glean on a time limit. You can take photos of entry and exit points, security details and suspicious items, sending them to Lester who will respond with new methods of approach and optional side missions to make the final heist more creative.

This isn’t just the illusion of choice either – the number of security shipments you damage in one mission will directly affect the number of guards in the casino underbelly. Similarly, if you scope out the secret sewer exit you’ll be able to dart away from the cops through a series of subsurface tubes, Italian Job style.

You can choose, spray and upgrade which cars to use in the getaway, with low-brow vehicles equalling a smaller cut from your take.

As you may be able to tell, this latest heist is designed to be completely adaptable. One of the most infuriating aspects of previous heist missions is that if you fail a single objective you’ll have to start again, even if in reality it wouldn’t result in the end of the road. With The Diamond Casino Heist, you can switch tact on the fly and dip into three separate styles of approach if somebody drops the ball – disguised, sneaky or aggressive. This means all is not lost on a single missed headshot or dodgy pathing, you can just brandish a machine-gun and go guns blazing. It feels more reactive, the gameplay reflecting the tense, dynamic approach to heisting seen in Overkill’s Payday 2.

This adaptive style doesn’t transfer to the setup missions, however. What I liked was the space Rockstar allows for you to experiment and come up with your own canon, where I’d have my friends try and cut enemies off at certain map landmarks – one example involved heading to the airfield to steal a dodo to crash into an unruly helicopter that was leaving the mission area. Yet despite probing your imagination, almost all of the prep missions devolve into ‘Lose the Cops’, a crescendo that Rockstar loves to lean on.

There’s an economic angle to the bloat here in that Online enables those with more means to have far superior efficiency. If you’re lucky enough to own an Oppressor, some missions are a joke, asking you to simply race around the map, lock on to a set of targets and tap a button to win, whilst the mere mortals on terra firma have to suffer. The free arcade property you receive for having a Twitch Prime subscription is a welcome gift, especially given that it’s essential for starting the heist proceedings – but it’s also only available as a rebate, which means if you don’t have the million and change upfront you’re going to have to grind or buy a shark card. It’s also in Paleto Bay, a good six and a half miles from the casino…

It’s the litany of long drives to and from the property to the casino that takes the absolute Michael De Santa – even if they inevitably lead to moments of unpredictable candor. There are precious few games where a crew can cruise in a rental sedan and wail their way through the frisson bridge of “I Want It That Way” by The Backstreet Boys. Not even the rotting corpse in the trunk can dampen that kind of team spirit.
