so i’m not done done with raincode yet, because i had to sleep eventually, but i finished chapter 5 and it looks like i’ve just got the epilogue to go. list of jumbled thoughts because i want to talk about it. first are my chapter 4 thoughts
-chapter 4 fucked me up immensely. i knew yakou had something going on but i didn’t expect him to do THAT and then die. i really like the dude
-yuma’s mad because omg yomi manipulated him!!! but you know what? yakou’s still a grown ass man who came up with an elaborate murder plan and honestly? it’s more interesting to treat him like he had agency in that. because he did. it’s fun. and actually, good for him. yomi is an incidental one-note villain. who cares about him
-extremely funny that yomi’s gf didn’t actually get pressed into a cube though. did yomi forget about that. was he ever like “where’s my cube”
-i LOVE vivia he’s. my guy!!! i was honestly wary of him because he had Komaeda Potential but he actually rocks.
-i said this on twitter but it’s really funny that vivia has so many Komaeda Traits but is infinitely more likeable to me. OP power, figures things out before the protagonist, talks in weird metaphors and threatens to kill you at least once. but he’s not a condescending asshole! so he’s fine!
-also the fact that he really cared about the chief and was upset by his death went a long way to make him sympathetic. and he’s kind to yuma as well, in his own way. even though he has a knife. when he told yuma he’d be an accomplice and grabbed the solution blade with him i was like ;____;
-every time he just sat/lay down in the mystery labyrinth was funny and weirdly endearing. i liked those character animations
-i also still adore halara. talked about this on twitter too but they...really kept pretending to revive/treat yakou even though they knew he’d died a while ago. and i can only assume it was for desuhiko and fubuki’s sake, since they were so upset already...yuma walks back in and halara is still doing chest presses on someone who died like an hour ago because they didn’t want to tell everyone he was dead until yuma and vivia came back. they’re a kind person. and i really love their dynamic with yuma.
-the mystery itself was very fun. i was scratching my head trying to figure out how the fuck the culprit got past the toxic gas, but...i guess it’s easy if you don’t plan to get through safely! and the plan relying on fubuki’s forte was also a good twist. although horrible. because i fried yakou to death at least six times. sorry dude
-the main Thing i have with the game that doesn’t make sense to me is that they’re always like. “it doesn’t matter if you find the truth!!! because the peacekeepers have so much power that they’ll just kill you and cover it up anyway!!!” and then yuma is like “no....they have to obey the law if we PROVE it....” like no they don’t. except for when they do. so i don’t know how much power they’re supposed to have or how corrupt they’re supposed to really be, it feels inconsistent. but i guess it works out for us every time. the save in this chapter at least felt pretty valid, because i have no idea how the fuck they just let us go in chapter 3

Hello!!! Hope you are having a wonderful day! I have two things to say/ask, I hope that's alright!
Have you ever mentioned being into the Yakuza series? Not sure if you did but idk, seeing as you're into both Danganronpa & Persona it might be up your alley (seeing as the fandoms all overlap!).
Also...
I remember you getting into AITSF (One of the Uchicord members was really happy about your Jim Furue takes a few months back) & eventually Raincode, so I'd like to ask....
How'd you like Raincode? You've probably already answered this but I'm a lil silly I apologize >.<
Hope the rest of your day goes well! 💙
I haven't played Yakuza, sorry. I've been meaning to check it out for years but I keep getting distracted by other stuff, and thanks to stuff going on in my life I don't think I have the energy for an 100+ hour game, much less a series of them. I do want to check them out eventually though, I've heard lots of great things about the characters.
I have played Judgment though, and I started Lost Judgment but the bullies infuriated me so much that I just couldn't keep going. I might try again but wow I could genuinely feel my blood pressure rising thanks to those brats. But I really, really enjoyed Judgment; the characters were great, the story was engaging, the mystery was fantastic and goddamn the music. Penumbra is one of my favourite boss themes.
Oh, wow, I wasn't aware people knew about that post and talked about it, especially since Jin doesn't have any screentime where he's alive. But yeah I love Somnium Files, really hope we can a third game... And I really hope Ryuki and Tama get more time to shine since they basically got shoved to the side for the second half of Nirvana Initiative.
I absolutely adored Rain Code. I was excited about it before it was released because I love Kodaka's work (even if his writing choices irritate me at times) but I think he and the rest of the team really outdid themselves. I loved all the characters, even the ones that I didn't get the best first impression of, the mysteries were all really good although I do think Chapter 3 was the weakest. It wasn't bad though, that's the thing, it just kinda ended when it felt like it was just getting started. Favourite chapters have to be Chapter 2 and Chapter 4, both of their conclusions had me sobbing. And that final big twist in the final chapter... Kodaka knew damn well what he was doing and I have to applaud him for that. And I look forward to any potential sequels they make because they set it up pretty well, I'd love a chance to play as Kurumi. I'd like to see how they could improve the mystery labyrinths too. I mean, you don't really do much in them, you just kinda run through, answer questions and do some quick time events, so I'd like to see if they could add some other mechanics to those sections and make them a little more interesting, maybe give your companions something else to do while there as well? Also, favourite character has to be Vivia, we barely know anything about him but his attitude and outlook on everything is so interesting and Aleks Le's performance was so good. Close second place is Yakou though, but I think everyone loves Yakou, so y'know.
Thank you, I hope you have a good day too.

Tumblr media
Ok so heads up i'm gonna be slightly changing up how i'm doing my media thread stuff, mainly i'm gonna be tagging stuff for the year i did it in for any games i did in 2023 or later with #beeb's 2023 media stuff and incrementing that up as the years go on. Then anything being ported over from my twitter thread from before 2023 will be ported with the #beeb's 2021 media stuff and #beeb's 2022 media stuff respectively.
Anyways so here's the first entirely new entry and not a port from my twitter media thead, master detective archives raincode. Kodaka the danganronpa guy's most recent game, raincode is another mystery series (big shocker) from the man himself and it follows the story of an amnesiac detective named yuma kokohead and his spectral companion shinigami solving mysteries together. So ultimately at its core raincode kinda gives off danganronpa like vibes considering the iconic danganronpa art style and the gameplay in the mystery labyrinths in some cases basically being reskinned danganronpa trilogy trial minigames like the final thing is literally just the closing argument stuff from danganronpa, and the reasoning deathmatches are very trial adjacent but regardless they're still pretty fun, even if they're honestly pretty easy imo considering yuma's titanic health pool and them giving not so subtle jabs towards the right answer if you try and slash through the wrong statement or use the wrong key so odds are you're probably not gonna have too much trouble with the mystery labyrinths unless you're like me and you're fucking terrible at hangman style things such as the shinigami puzzles, which were the only things i game overed to the entire time i was playing the game.
The characters in raincode can vary wildly in quality, from bangers in my humble opinion like yakou, halara, fubuki, and vivia to abominations against all that is good like desuhiko and especially shinigami, like i fucking HATE shinigami. Shinigami is extremely annoying, she never shuts up and isn't really funny at all like basically any time she's talking i'd rather she just shuts the fuck up, or at least that's how i was at the start of the game, over the course of the game i think i ended up getting stockholm syndromed intro tolerating both of them but like even if i've grown numb to their bullshit they're still annoying as fuck. Otherwise most of the other characters are mostly pretty ok. Although in another parallel to danganronpa fubuki feels very similar to sonia nevermind from danganronpa 2 except probably even dumber.
Raincode's mysteries are overally really really nice, certain annoying characters withstanding. Like even with all the weird shit that kodaka does i at least gotta hand it to him, he knows how to write a good mystery. Uh i suppose if i were to give raincode a chapter ranking i'd say they're in this order, top being best bottom being worst 4 5 (Honestly 4 and 5 are really close i could probably swap them around depending on my mood) 0 1 Gap 2 (Desuhiko and Shinigami are to blame for fucking over chapter 2, i actually really like the mystery this chapter if it weren't for them being fucking awful i'd rate this higher) 3 (3's probably the only one where the mystery kind of felt like it fell apart for me, the mystery labyrinth is also plagued by having fubuki and shinigami constantly fucking fighting) So my final thoughts on if you should play raincode or not are a resounding... Maybe - It's a kodaka game i've gotta give it that maybe just like all the danganronpa games. Honestly i don't think i regret playing raincode and i overall had a lot of fun with it, just like be mindful of all the kodaka classics and hopefully you'll have fun with the game
