Chapter 3-Funeral Procession of the Dead; Scene 2

Outlaw & Lychgate, pages 48-58

The land that had once been Retasan Fortress.

Seth and Lich spotted the crew of undead walking along in a procession nearby.

“…There they are. The Outlaws,” Lich murmured as he got down from the carriage alongside Seth.

Dead soldiers were largely beings without capacity for reason, yet the Outlaws appeared to be heading somewhere in a single-file line with distinctly organized movements.

“It’s like they’re a funeral procession.” After voicing his thoughts, Seth turned to look at Lich’s face. “I suppose I ought to ask what our resident expert thinks of this scene. Hey, Lich.”

“…Someone is controlling the Outlaws. At this point the only person who could make the dead soldiers move like that is Lady Banica, I would think—”

“But it isn’t her.”

“—Then there are two other possibilities I can think of. An ‘inheritor’ who has the power of ‘Gluttony’, or else…the ‘boy’ that you’ve spoken of.”

“An ‘inheritor’…It’s been a while since I’ve heard that term.”

By all rights, the only people who could wield a demon’s power were those who had contracted with that demon.

But in this world there was the rare person who would have demonic powers from birth.

In the days when the magic users of Levianta called these people “inheritors” they were worshipped, and still at times also feared and discriminated against.

For example, Irina Clockworker.

While being a clone of Seth, she was also an “inheritor” of the powers of “Greed”, and so was able to cast blue flames.

And then there was the people of the Loop Octopus clan.

The whole family line, such as the head of the Leviantan senate and his descendants, would periodically have prophetic dreams called “purple dreams”. This was because they were “inheritors” of “Envy”.

Other “inheritors” had shown up in history several times before, such as Mikhail Asayev, the instigator of the “New Four Horsemen Incident”.

But as for an “inheritor” with the power of “Gluttony”…

Seth had never so much as heard a rumor of one, in all the long years he’d wandered this world.

It was the same for Lich.

“Still…There may be someone who had the power of an ‘inheritor’ but went their whole lives without using it.”

There was something Seth found hard to grasp in Lich’s theory. “If that were the case…Why would they start using their power this late in the game?”

“Who knows…What do you think of the other candidate?”

“The ‘boy’?...” As far as Seth knew, he didn’t have that kind of power. “I don’t think so.”

“But do you think that he’s involved in this matter?”

“Yes. So it’s likely that the ‘boy’ and this person controlling the group—”

“Have joined forces?”

“It would appear so.”

There was no point in endlessly debating over it here.

Whatever the case, for now the two of them decided to tag along with the procession.

“Could you wait for us here?” Lich asked the coachman.

“Sure, I don’t mind.”

“I don’t think it’ll take very long, but…if we haven’t come back by sundown please head back to the palace by yourself and let the King know.”

“Understood—Well then, stay safe.”

It wasn’t clear if the Outlaws could see Lich and Seth or not, but at any rate they didn’t appear to pay them any particular mind, steadily moving on ahead.

Judging by their direction, their goal seemed to be the ruins of Retasan fortress.

“They’re quite slow…How about we try going ahead of the procession?”

Lich nodded at Seth’s suggestion. “There’s no need for us to tag along at the back of the line. And perhaps the person controlling the group is at the very front.”

The two of them slipped by the line, aiming for the head.

Midway there, Seth stopped and pointed at the procession.

“Hey, Lich, look there.”

Inside the line it seemed there were Outlaws carrying a long black box.

“It’s just big enough for someone to be inside—It looks like a coffin. I guess it really is a funeral procession.”

“I wonder whose corpse is…Actually, I suppose there’s not even necessarily a person in there.”

“Shall we take a peek? We may be souls but I’m sure we can at least move the lid a little.”

“…No way. We’re going to head to the front first without needlessly provoking them.”

“Alright, alright.”

Lich began to walk towards the front again, paying no mind to Seth’s apparent reluctance to leave.

They reached the head of the line, but the Outlaw walking at the front appeared no different from the rest.

“Doesn’t look much like the leader.” Lich appeared a bit disappointed, but when he turned to look at where the procession was going, the color of his expression changed. “That’s…”

He could see a mansion with red walls.

It looked like that was where they were headed.

“You recognize that building?” Seth asked.

“I’ve never been there myself. But it…looks very much like the mansion Lady Banica conjured with her imagination…based on the one she’d had in life.”

“My my—Then maybe Banica’s the ringleader of all this after all?”

“It can’t be…I never heard anything about it from her.”

“In that case maybe it’s just that she doesn’t have a lot of confidence in y—”

“Let’s check it out,” Lich interrupted, dashing off towards the mansion.

“Hey, I wouldn’t think you’re that sort of character…Well, this is fine too. This is Lich’s true self that only I know…Ha ha.”

Seth chased after Lich, a half smile on his face.

On first glance there was no one inside the mansion.

But given that the building existed like this—there must have been someone to have conjured it up.

Seth and Lich split up to search every room.

--In no time at all.

When Seth opened the door labeled “Head Chamberlain’s Quarters”, he spotted a single man quietly sitting inside.

He looked like a dead soldier, but had a slightly different atmosphere than the others.

“…What is it? I’m in the middle of my break right now,” he said, his eyes clearly carrying a spark of reason in them.

“Ho, so you can see me.”

“…I’m not sure I understand what you’re getting at.”

“Well, whatever—Hey, Lich!” Seth loudly called for Lich. “This way, he’s in here!”

Lich appeared after a few moments.

“This is—”

“Most likely the leader of the Outlaws.”

Lich stood before the dead soldier and asked, “What is your name?”

“Ron Grapple. I am a chamberlain who serves the Conchita family.”

“…Ah. But from what I can see, there’s no one in this mansion but you.”

“Indeed, it would appear so. Everyone else has already passed on, after all.”

“So then what exactly are you doing here?”

“I…must show my mourning. For the final owner of this mansion—Lady Banica.”

“--!?”

Lich’s eyes opened wide for a moment.

“By doing so, her spirit will be released…And the curse upon me will also be lifted.”

“Curse?”

“I was once cursed by two dreadful twins. A curse that means I can never die—Even if I become a dead soldier, and my body rots away…As time passes I am resurrected, again and again.”

“…”

“At first I lost my sanity, just like the others. But eventually, little by little, I regained the conscious mind I had in life…and became able to control the other dead soldiers.”

“Hmm, that’s quite interesting…But why were you cursed in the first place?”

“Curse…curse…” Ron suddenly covered his face with his hands, bending over. “The twins’ curse…No, much earlier than that…The curse of the Baemu—No! It all started…On that day. My father…Aybee, using his ‘inheritor’ powers, turned me into—I have always been his puppet! Without being conscious of it I hired those twins…And then the Baemu…I was forced to slip it in with the other gifts…Ohh…Ouuugh…”

Finally he started to sob, bursting into tears.

Seth stood before Lich and murmured, “He appears very distraught…Perhaps we ought to change the subject.”

“…Right.”

Lich crouched down and locked eyes with Ron. “—Are you alright?”

“Y…yes…I apologize. I lost my composure there.”

“Let’s not talk about the past, but rather what’s going on right now, shall we? Before we came here we saw a group of dead soldiers carrying a coffin…Are they yours?”

“—Yes. They are bringing it here under my instruction. To hold a funeral service for Lady Banica.”

“So then inside the coffin is—”

“Lady Banica’s corpse is laid out inside. It was recovered from the ground under the directions of another.”

--There was a massive flaw in his explanation.

As far as Seth knew (and Lich likely knew as well), before her death Banica’s last act had been to eat herself.

Her dead body couldn’t possibly still exist somewhere.

Someone had lied to this Ron.

And the true identity of the fiend deceiving him would be--

--The ‘boy’.

Seth cut in between Lich and Ron, “Where is the person who gave you those directions now?”

“He’s—”

In that moment.

The room was suddenly filled with a dazzling light.

“—You don’t need to say it, Ron.” A child’s voice came from within the light. “If you’re talking about me…I’m already here.”

Seth cried out to the light—to the ‘boy’, “So it’s you—Amostia!”

“…Well well, if it isn’t my dear father.”

“Indeed. But…You seem to have changed quite a bit, haven’t you.”

“I have, you are correct. I am no longer—the ‘boy’ that you once knew.”

--So it was true.

It was as he’d thought.

The theory that Seth had in his mind was becoming a conviction.

Dreaming of the Dawn

Post-canon Noctis (or should I say Post-Episode Ignis canon as of December 13th 2017? Well, it was written long before the DLC came out) and Ignis visit the old apartment building. A spontaneous decision led by another, they would always be at each other's side no matter the outcome.

“What do you see?” “I...” Noctis struggled to articulate the view. “It’s different. And in much better shape than I thought it’d be.” Before the attack on the Crown City, there used to be a grand wisteria tree that grew in the centre of the courtyard. The very same tree where Ignis parked his car under one day in spring and found it overwhelmed by the fallen flowers. While Ignis lamented over retracting the roof, Noctis made no comment and compelled by some adventitious force, reached out to pluck the lavender blue blossom from the chamberlain’s chestnut locks and innocently, “You look so good in purple, Ig.” What remained of the tree now was a dead charred stump with its years before it was cut prematurely engraved in it, but beside it, two saplings had sprouted from the icy, withered ground. “Does it look safe to go inside?” Ignis asked, readjusting the plum scarf around his neck and removing the frosted visor over his scarred face. “Yeah,” Noctis forced the lump in his throat down. “Just... a lot to take in at once.”

“Then we have little to fear.” Ignis pressed a gloved finger to his lips, pensive before cocking his head assertively. “May I remind you that it was your idea to come to this place? We mustn’t drift from the goal now.” Whether Ignis was aware or felt exhausted hearing it time and time again, Noctis knew he was right. It was his idea and stopping halfway would be unsatisfactory to the both of them. With one hand holding the bag containing their lunch and the other finding catharsis from the emanating warmth of Ignis’ hand, Noctis led him inside the building. Despite its haunted and somber exterior, he can’t help but to feel relief to finally approach this piece of his past. Electricity was one of the vital resources that withstood the passages of time and underground conduits extended to all parts of the city. The apartment complex was no exception. The elevators responded when summoned and lifted the two men to the top floor. Noctis had lived in Insomnia Tower when he was fifteen and had vacated the premises five years later for Altissia. For a time, he lived a normal life and his duties as crown prince were lenient, but at the cost of being kept out of the loop of his father’s failing health. Death had followed the young prince since the beginning. Succession to the throne meant his father’s death and the frailty of his own mortality and it drove him to distance from anything and anyone that reminded him of it. “Well?” Ignis turned his head after Noctis got them inside the apartment, waiting for the grand tour he had been promised. “Don’t keep me in suspense.” “I’ll, uh, let me get the lights.” Noctis hit the switch by the entrance and light flooded the hall leading to the living room and kitchen. “Abandoned,” he paused, holding his breath to stop himself from sneezing. “And pretty dusty. Watch out.” “Duly noted.” Noctis swore he heard an eye roll with that. Ignis removed his gloves and carefully tucked them away in his pocket before feeling his way against the walls, tracing cracks and peeling wallpaper. “It’s rather drafty here, wouldn’t you say? I fear we’ll catch our death of cold.” The king agreed, it was musty and freezing inside, but he didn’t have the heart to let a gentleman suffer. “I can think of a couple ways to keep warm.” “Not so fast, Majesty. See if we can heat this room up a bit.” The power still worked, but it was too much to hope that the heating system would as well. They would just have to endure. Curiosity was the best cure to keeping minds off the cold. Ignis was more eager about coming here than he showed, examining the condition of the interior and making comments every now and then. Save for the cupboards, counters, and appliances bolted down, the apartment was stripped bare. Not a single piece of furniture remained. Not even the bed frames in the main bedroom and guest room. Noctis walked around the living room, the floorboards reverberated and eerily welcomed its visitors. He mostly remembered where everything was and the accidents that occurred. Every spot, though the physical markers long gone, carried fragments of his closest relationships. By the veranda, Cogsworth, a resilient house plant he received from Iris, was either swollen from excessive watering or went through days without a drop of water. Taking advantage of their strongest to weakest subjects, Prompto and Noctis had intense study sessions on the couch, comparing answers in preparation for exams with lots of junk food involved. Not taking no for an answer, Gladiolus had always came over with a deck of cards and despite the bitter taste of defeat more rounds than victory, somehow, became life lessons about decision making. Noctis had kept the red leather notebook that he used to write to Luna in a bookshelf, sending trading cards and limited edition stickers her way, knowing she loved collecting them. And Ignis, no matter what kind of day Noctis was having after school or work, the chamberlain had one of the vinyl records in the collection playing and a home-cooked meal waiting, starting a tradition that he would wait until they were able to eat together.

Deciding to head to the veranda, Noctis noticed that the velvet curtains swayed as if possessed, and pulled them wide open. Many times a young prince stood outside and stared out to the metropolis that he was to inherit, a myriad of thoughts plagued him. Insomnia at night had life, a cacophonous and yet, harmonious energy to that was easy to lose himself in. He was part of the city as it was of him. He wasn’t the prince, he was just Noctis and it was okay to forget for a while. “Found what’s making the place cold.” There was a massive crack in the window and it allowed gentle gusts of air to come through. “I wonder who lived here after we left. If there was a somebody,” he pondered aloud. If someone did, maybe they saw Insomnia differently than he did. “Best not to ponder over less than savory thoughts.” Ignis said, close by, assessing the kitchen and finding that the facet ran dry.

“Yeah, you’re right. Having fun yet?” “I was just recalling our game nights. How far a man would go to get the last slice of pizza.”

“Those were the days.” The king agreed, remembering the best and cheapest pizza on the block. Through the best and worst days, Noctis treasured those memories. Ignis didn’t live with him, he stayed over often, and it was perfect even if it was only overnight and having to leave before Noctis woke up. Knowing that it wouldn’t last, the young prince pretended that they would live here forever without the burden of the royal family name looming over them. A futile and foolish fantasy. A few weeks after he survived the blood prophecy, Noctis knew not what to do next. He had no plan. No goal. Death was the last and only plan, he entrusted Lucis to his retinue and allies. Since then, rebuilding was the only thing he managed to stay focused on. He bore no weight on his own future. Ignis believed in him. Blind loyalty, he claimed, but Noctis knew better: Ignis never once lost the light in his eyes. “Shall we take a break? I’m feeling a bit peckish.” Noctis wasn’t done looking around and while they could always return, he hadn’t been fully truthful to Ignis that he informed the others that they were here. There was something here to be uncovered and he thought if he didn’t have the answer, Ignis might provide input. “You sure? There’s nowhere to sit.” “We’ll settle for the floor then.” The king and the strategist sat on the floor across each from other where the dining table used to be, and dined on what contents Noctis brought in the bag. “What kind of sandwich—” “PB and J,” Noctis answered cheerfully with his mouth full. “Of course.” Ignis chuckled as he bit into his sandwich. “Compliments to the chef as always.” “I know my way ‘round a jar or two,” the king replied, licking the peanut butter off his digits. They ate their food in comfortable silence and tidied up before resuming to the investigation of the apartment together. “We’ve achieved much in the past several months,” Ignis remarked, joining Noctis at the veranda. “The progress of repairs in the Citadel have exceedingly gone beyond expectations.” “It’s because everyone’s been so willing to help,” Noctis explained, giving credit where credit was due. “Men, women, even the kids pitched in. Everyone’s giving their all.” “They’ve been inspired by their king and his trusty pickaxe, toiling away to clear the rubble with his own two hands. It sounds like a folktale, given your new honorific as the Dawn-Bringer.” The strategist crossed his arms. “Let’s turn our attention to this place next.” “Huh? Didn’t know we’re playing real estate now. You sure love taking your roleplaying seriously.” “Come now, it’s more of a personal interest. I thought we ought to restore what memories we can.” “We can always make new ones, right?” “Is that not what we’re doing now?” “Yeah, but...” Noctis’ mind painted of what used to be there. Yes, it was where he lived, precarious circumstances aside, but it wasn’t home. Home was in the people, not the place. In a way, his heart moved out when Prompto, Gladiolus, and Ignis helped him pack that day. If he were asked to provide a definition of home, Ignis’ smiling at him was the thought that came to mind. Since the first moment Ignis breathed his name in absolution, Noctis had thought of the future even when the universe fought so viciously to deny him of it. Ignis had never left Noctis’ side. When Noctis returned from his time in the Crystal, he had thought Ignis would treat him as a stranger and after all that time, the strategist would have a change of heart. It was a cruel reality that he was ready to accept, ten years was more than enough time for a person to change. He was glad he was wrong. Nothing changed. “Noct?” “Back when you, we, had our doubts about how this would turn out, I promised you that every morning when you wake up, you’ll never regret being with me, right?” “Of course. I never regretted you or us, cherishing the time we have together.” “And we agreed to one day going to Caem and locking ourselves in a cottage for a week. Finally get that peace and quiet we talked about.” “Mhm. After Insomnia’s rebuilt. Not before,” Ignis reminded him of that condition for good measure. “You were quite persistent that I wear that swimsuit when we both know how inappropriate it is for harvesting mussels.” “Hey, hunting for seafood is your idea, not mine.” The king realized that the conversation was starting to go off-track and revealed the first five words without hesitation, “Ignis, will you marry me?” Ignis’ eye widened and his body stiffened for a moment. He made a sound as if the puzzle pieces in his ever-calculating mind have finally clicked in place. “Are you...” Noctis took Ignis’ left hand and his lips caressed the knuckles, unable to look at his face while his own warmed. “I... don’t have a ring. Yet. But I can ask this again when I do.” A soft, rueful laugh escaped him as his forehead touched Ignis’ chest. He didn’t have a speech prepared, but that didn’t mean the desire to spend his life with the man he loved wasn’t without certainty. “Not once we talked about this, but in my head, I see us tying the knot already and it always felt so right. So... You don’t have to give me an answer now. Just think about it.” Draping an arm around him, Ignis rested his chin on the king’s crown, his voice unexpectedly low that it raised goosebumps. “That won’t be necessary.” His chest rose and fell once with ecstatic conviction. “Nothing would make me happier.” Noctis’ heart thundered in his chest at the vagueness of that answer. “Do you—”

“I do.” “Wait, you didn’t let me finish,” the king frowned, untangling himself from the strategist’s embrace. “Is that a yes or a no?” Ignis tilted his head, a teasing smirk on his lips. “I didn’t wish to waste a single second to give you my answer. Twice. And yet, you certainly love to keep me waiting.” His fingers twined in Noctis’. “You may not realize this, but the thought about marriage has crossed my mind. I swore to love you until the last star in the galaxy is extinguished, have I not?” He said, bringing Noctis’ palm to his lips, adding, “I aim to keep my vow.”

The king pouted, tracing the thin scar on the lower lip. “You could’ve said something.”

“Patience is a virtue. I can account that the quality of is quite rewarding. Your spontaneous proposal caught me by surprise.”

“If anyone asks, it’s because of your ‘patience’ that we’re not married right now.” “Perhaps,” Ignis admitted and he reached out with his free hand to stroke Noctis’ cheek. “However, I will tell you this once more and for as many times as need be: I do.”

Noctis grinned, standing on his toes as he circled his arms around Ignis. He could never get sick of hearing those words. There were many ways to express their love and those two words were enough for now.

“I do, too,” he murmured before he kissed him.

With every atom of his existence and all the light that shined on their world.

Part 1 - Homo Liberaretur

This is the first complete post in my series on human augmentation from the perspective of microchips. This particular post deals with discussions around the human body, what it is, and how this particular view can be problematised. Enjoy!

I was in Lund, a city revolving around its university. It is very near to where I grew up, so it seemed an appropriate place to find myself early on in my research. I was here to meet Harrison, grabbing a fika, or meeting socially for over a coffee - something unmistakably Swedish, and a good way to get to know someone new. Harrison was a self-avowed transhumanist, openly, vocally, and proudly. He held a deeply rooted moral conviction that not only does technology inherently lead to progress but if there emerged any technology with the capability of improving the human body or experience - the human condition, in short - there exist a moral obligation to use it. It later became clear that Harrison’s idea of ‘improvement’ was mainly rooted to the concept of extending the capability of the human body: seeing more wavelengths, hearing higher pitches, lifting heavier boxes, living longer. Adding technology, even replacing otherwise functional parts of our bodies was, according to my interlocutor, not only the next (and seemingly obvious) step in human evolution, but our fundamental raison d'etre. After all, he told me putting down a now empty cup, “we have always improved ourselves. Clothes, therapeutic tattoos, eye-glasses; and now wearables. Why stop outside the body? The human body is weak, fallible, and even though nature did an amazing job getting us this far, this obviously can’t be it. This can’t be the endpoint. Why should we be confined to this meat bag [sv: köttpåse] forever?

'Meat bag’ is a particularly jarring phrase. It certainly makes me wince every time I read it, if just internally. There’s something deeply undignified, rudimentary, and substandard with the phrase, made doubly uncomfortable by it describing the human body - my body. My knee-jerk was to reject the idea outright. The human body isn’t so thoughtlessly thrown together, so messy and disorganised, decaying and dysfunctional, and it most certainly isn’t something as disgusting and tragic as a sack of meat. It later became clear that Harrison wasn’t the only one to describe the body in these terms, these exact terms in some cases. The whole sentiment, it seemed was that the body we had today wasn’t the body we ought to have; it’s not 'even our final form’. During the same meeting, Harrison flatly told me that we are not what we have always been, evolution is a fact of life, of existence even, and we therefore shouldn’t be so attached to our current bodies. "Just as something has come before us,” Harrison said, sipping a second cappuccino, “monkeys and all that, something must come after us. There must necessarily be something post-human”. Though the statement, such as it is, holds up, there was something refined about it, something overly-thought-through, especially in the way he mixed English and Swedish as if to make the statement quotable. “Why not let evolution do its job?” I asked, naively. Based on what I had read previously, and what Harrison had told me, this was nothing short of a ridiculous suggestion. The answer was what I had, in many ways, expected: “Because evolution doesn’t know what it’s doing. It happens, random mutations, and it happens slowly. We have no control over it, we don’t know what’s going to happen, where things will go. It’s just not worth that risk.”

He seemed excited I had brought up this particular question, and quickly produced his phone, “Have you read or heard of Max More?” he asked while frantically poking around on the screen, before finding what he wanted, handing it to me, “read this”. I must admit that I only really skimmed it at the time, and only really read it in detail a few days later. The piece, A letter to Mother Nature, is one of the deeply influential texts in the transhumanist movement. It is clear why. It reads like a declaration of independence from biology itself. “We will no longer tolerate the tyranny of ageing” it pontificates, further demanding that “we will no longer be a slave to our genes”. Though More does somewhat thank this anthropomorphic Mother Nature for getting us this far, he makes it clear it is better if she retires (or else).

Max More, in his piece, makes it extremely clear that this sense of human empowerment, emancipation even, will stem from science and technology. This is how we will take control of our futures, of our collective destiny. When I found myself up in Stockholm a short time later, I had the opportunity to meet with Peter, a friend and colleague of Harrison. He without a doubt had bought into More’s argument, “You drank the Koolaid” I said, jokingly, “Yes”, Peter replied, “and this time the only danger is that not enough people will!”. We sat in a shared working space in the centre of Stockholm. It was a high-tech building, organised as a top of the line office for technology and innovation start-ups, and the hope was to bring together entrepreneurs from all facets to create a community out of which technological innovation can emerge. He showed me around, while we were looking for a free meeting room. The vast open space, interspersed with fish-tank meeting rooms made the space feel like a slice of Silicon Valley in the heart of Stockholm. Peter was a marketing man, and he had only really bought into transhumanism once he had met Harrison, but he was by now convert, in everything but name: “I wouldn’t go as far as to call myself a transhumanist. Why? I mean, I’m a bit older, I’m out of the loop in many ways, but I try to keep up. The point is, I don’t dare to call myself a transhumanist, because I wouldn’t have the balls to lead the charge into these new things. I’m a follower, I’m convinced without a doubt, but I won’t take that final plunge”. The proverbial plunge being human augmentation. In the most quotable way, Peter told me that technology is the future simply because “technology is clean, and biology is messy”. Besides, I was assured, we are already engaging in these forms of augmentation: specifically within the medical sphere. Pacemakers, hip replacements, cochlear implants, just to name a few. These were are all being done already, are major surgeries, and all carry out a form of “magic, but through science! Now all we need to figure out is how to take it to the next step.”

When questioned about bringing things to the “next step”, especially bringing up the discomfort around discussions of 'human improvement’ given its historical implications ranging from eugenics to concentration camps, the answer more often than not take a stance on the perfect opposite end of that spectrum. In other words, not to reconcile, but to outright dismiss. I was back in Lund now, meeting with a student at the university: Ethan. He was heavily involved with DIY science, and had a love from human augmentation after first being exposed to it through popular media, “in particular Deus Ex, the video game”. We sat at a cafe on a side-street, one of the first properly sunny days of the year, and despite the wind, the narrow medieval streets of Lund made it feel like high summer. Over a beer, our conversation went on. “There is this thing in the game that the characters to communicate telepathically, and I always thought that was so cool,” Ethan said, with a glimmer in his eye, “I always wanted to replicate that”, which it turns out he is attempting. This seemed outrageous to me, after all, he was 'just’ a physics undergraduate. He agreed but continued “it’s not really about completely doing it now, but someone’s got to start. I read a paper that showed that when you’re reading your throat muscles are producing micro twitches as if you were speaking. I’m trying to build electrodes that are sensitive enough to pick up the twitches, and then software to translate that to, like, a Word document or something”. Simply starting the process, making the first breakthrough was good enough.

“But aren’t you concerned when it comes to evening adding or taking things away from people, from humans?” I asked him. It was clear it was a question he had gotten a hundred times before, “I don’t think it’s reasonable to throw out an option completely just because it can be used for bad ends. I don’t think anyone reasonable wants to force people to get these augmentations, it’s more about giving people options. To expand what you can and cannot do, and to allow people to really be what they want to be”. The ideal sought after at the end of the day is what many within the movement call morphological freedom: the freedom to take on any form of existence you would like. On this note, a few months after my meeting with Ethan, I had the opportunity to see Max More speak at a conference in London. In his talk, he outlined morphological freedom as a fundamental human right that had been ignored for too long. If you exist, you have an inalienable right to take on any form you wish, he insisted. Simply abiding by the limitations - completely arbitrary ones, he added - nature has set for us doesn’t have any innate value or reason. It is, therefore, our responsibility to find a way to overcome them, the next step in our evolution. Evolution has brought us to the brink of being able to take control, so taking this control must now be humanity’s collective raison d'etre.

At this stage, it might seem a bit confusing as to how this at all has anything to do with microchipping - these high-minded ideals, talk of techno-utopianism, liberation from the 'shackles of nature’, or morphological freedom. Going back to my fika with Hannes, I asked him just this question. After all, his involvement with popularising micro-implants was why we had met to begin with, and the meeting immediately took a turn for the utopian. “These?” he said, pointing at his left hand as if there was something these, “oh, they’re just toys, neither here nor there. They’re just the beginning of something, the first steps, nothing to flaunt [sv. Ingenting att hänga i julgranen]”. Harrison, however, was very careful to point out to me that it wasn’t very long ago that wearable technologies were just as rudimentary, and though we now have smartwatches and fitness trackers, they are still in their infancy, however, “not even these would have gotten very far if people hadn’t used them”. It appears, then, that much of the high-minded idealism aims to convince people of the same future my interlocutors like to imagine.

The recurring image is of the techno-utopian future as inevitable, but that it is also being held back by people either not believing, or not realising its inevitability. When speaking to people outside of the movement, the reactions to something as minimally intrusive as a microchip in your hand (bearing in mind that it is injected into your hand through a syringe, and the procedure doesn’t take much longer than 15 seconds) the reactions are either neutral or steeped in horror. During a conversation with my sister and brother-in-law about my implant, my sister was made so uncomfortable by the very idea of it all, she refused to touch my hand where the chip was implanted. A bit melodramatic, perhaps, but by no means unique. If not met with cute visceral discomfort it is often understood to be unnecessary. It highlights the main tension that the movement is up against: that between therapy and enhancement. While the medical field is often highlighted as simply doing 'what we’re doing’ when it comes to medical implants, as outlined above, the difference is not only in context but also intent. A pacemaker, for example, might equate to an artificial heart, but it is nonetheless only administered when a 'regular’ heart isn’t working. In other words, it is therapeutic, and therapy inherently means to bring bodily functions in line with a normative socio-cultural view of what the human body is, and thereby what it ought to be able to do (have a beating heart, walk, breathe, see, hear, and so on). Enhancement exists to bring the capabilities of the human body above this normative view, thereby causing a 'break’ between how we view medical intervention compared to 'frivolous’ improvement.

Harrison, Peter, or Ethan and many more, are up against more than just technological limitations, they’re up against wider social and cultural forces. As they see it, they are working towards a solution to a problem that society at large doesn’t recognise. STS professor Steven Hilgartner have called these types of movements 'socio-technical vanguards’, or people who formulate and act to realise particular visions of the future, specifically visions that have not yet been accepted by wider society. However, the ideas being floated within these communities aren’t as radical as you might first believe. Though it is traditionally espoused that the Western view of the body and self is squarely rooted in the so-called Cartesian split (i.e. that the body and mind are two different 'entities’, and the mind controls the body), researchers have not only begun questioning this but have even started noticing a very clear shift towards 'datafied’ understanding of the body. The theory goes that everything about the body can be quantified, down to cell structures and DNA, even your mind is not different. In other words, you’re simply made up of code.

This shift has some clear implications for the typical transhumanist view of the body. It creates a more 'level’ playing field in communicating this particular version of the body. Arguing that we’re not much different than computers, whereby our bodies are hardware that’s running particular software becomes more grounded in the pop-sci understanding of the latest research. What follows is an understanding of the body being exchangeable as a matter-of-course. It is, after all, not much than a (granted, rather long) extension of the currently dominant discourse. But is it that simple?

Scholar and thinker Donna Haraway reminds us that it’s not only our current worldviews that matter, but also what worldviews lead their development. As she puts it, it matters what “worlds word worlds”. With the growth of wearables, social media, and other algorithms, there has been an inevitable shift in how engineers and developers understand the body, one that necessitated quantification. As this later spread to other communities (Quantified Self springs to mind as a very clear example), it became a more and more ingrained. However, there are some problems with this, given that this particular understanding is grounded in particular views of enlightenment philosophy and the scientific revolution, meaning that - in short - this particular view is far from as neutral as it might appear. As yet others have argued, this limiting scope of the body also helps to reproduce its views. More specifically through an example, the choices made as to what metrics to track in a fitness tracker invariably comes with an assumption that this aspect needs to be improved - steps taken, heart rate, sleeping patterns, and so on. Simultaneously, any such decisions will discount other 'metrics’, and by extension make (perhaps implicit) decisions as to what it means to be human.

It is through this process that speaking of a 'technologically improved human’ becomes problematic, as we are never asked to ponder the question: Whose human? Whose improvement? Whose technology? It does indeed matter what “worlds world worlds”, and what this shows more than anything is that these movements, organisations, and people do not operate after an objective understanding of anything, but rather operate under a very specific ideology.

An ideology of techno-utopianism.

The New DJI Robot is Insane: Introducing the Robomaster EP Core

Our verdict of the DJI Robomaster EP Core: The most powerful STEAM learning robot ever. A comprehensive education toolkit and curriculum for both Scratch and Python programming is provided, and further expansion is possible with various microcontrollers and sensors.1010

You probably think of DJI as that drone company, but they’ve actually turned their engineering geniuses to a lot more than just drones. The DJI Robomaster EP Core is the next generation of intelligently programmable, remote-controlled, or entirely autonomous robots. It’s insanely good fun, a great learning experience, and I’m completely smitten with it.

Note: we received an engineering sample for testing. Contents and build guide may differ, and we didn’t have access to the full educational curriculum, only the existing Robomaster app (which is primarily designed for the Robomaster S1 Series).

Building the Robomaster EP Core

Before you can really get started, the Robomaster EP Core package arrives in an enormous box consisting of five trays of parts. That’s right: it’s flat-packed and you’ll need to build it yourself. That would the Engineering part of the STEAM learning experience.

It took me a good half-day of solid build time to get this put together (which you can see in the video review compressed down to about a minute!).

Thankfully the instructions are detailed, and despite two full trays of screws and bolts, each part is labeled well and at no point was I confused about where something ought to be placed.

If you can build some Ikea furniture, you can do this. Just be sure to pick the right screw from the right part of the tray.

Getting Started

You can connect to the Robomaster either via a local Wi-Fi, or by allowing the Robomaster to connect to your router. The latter is preferable, as it allows you to access the Robomaster from any networked client for truly remote control and programming.

A desktop version of the software is available for Mac or PC, though it appears to be a direct port of the mobile app, and runs full-screen.

A switch on the side of the grey controller box selects which mode to operate in. Simply type in your Wi-Fi password to the app so it can generate a QR code. The camera mounted on the Robomaster will then read this, and connect to the network.

Note that the Robomaster is unable to roam between enterprise Wi-Fi access points, so you should use a single high powered router or ensure adequate coverage in the location you’ll be operating the Robomaster. Driving down my hallway resulted in the Robomaster disconnecting from one Unifi access point and pausing for a few seconds as it reconnected through another.

Robomaster Chassis

There are two main parts to the build. The first is the wheels and chassis. We’ll talk more about the “Mecanum” wheels in a moment, but the chassis itself is built around a large solid metal frame, which includes extra mounting points for your own 3D printed parts, accessories, or additional sensors.

The front half has a slight suspension on it, allowing it to traverse small bumps with ease.

This chassis houses the battery as well as the power distribution board and communication bus. It’s this that you’ll plug everything in to. The battery is removable, and spares can be purchased. Each charge lasted me about an hour of constant use.

The 2400mAh battery can be swapped easily and spares purchased separately.

One outstanding feature of the Robomaster EP Core is the four Mecanum wheels. Each wheel is driven by its own powerful custom DJI servo.

Rather than a traditional rubber tire, these wheels has a set of twelve freely-rotating rollers, mounted at a 45-degree offset. Confused? I don’t blame you.

This curious arrangement of rollers on the wheel means that simply rotating the wheel actually forces it to move sideways instead. In order to create the normal forward or backward motion, you need another Mecanum wheel with its rollers mounted in the opposite direction. When both wheels are then rotated in the same direction, the sideways forces cancel each other out, and the chassis actually moves forward or backward as intended.

However, the magic comes when each wheel is driven in opposite directions, both creating the same sideways motion instead. With four such wheels mounted in this configuration, the Robomaster can both strafe left and right, and rotate 360-degrees on the spot. This is called omnidirectional movement. And it’s nothing short of amazing.

If you haven’t already watched the review video to see this in action, you really need to go do that now. Go on, I’ll wait.

This isn’t just incredible to watch though, it also opens up so many more programming possibilities for maneuvering because of the precision involved.

It also adds more interest to the remote control aspect. Maneuvering now requires two analog joysticks, rather than an accelerate and brake pedal, and steering wheel. Anyone familiar with first-person shooter games will feel at home immediately. You can strafe around a target in a circle, for instance, or easily drift around corners. The Robomaster EP Core is highly agile in tight spaces, and racing this thing is immensely fun.

Stop having fun though: this is a learning experience!

Grabber

Mounted on top of the chassis are the grabber attachment and grey controller box. The controller handles Wi-Fi communication, as well as the micro-SD card for recordings.

Powered by three strong servos, the grabber can lift up and down, push or pull, as well as pinch in or expand its rubber claws. Obviously the first thing I did was to grab a courgette and lug it around the kitchen for a while.

When fully extended, the lifting power of the servo is limited, so you may need to pull an object in closer before it can be lifted up again. It’s reasonably powerful and was able to lift up some small blocks of wood or toy cones, but struggled with an iPhone 6 Plus (which is about 6 ounces).

The Robomaster App

While a separate SDK is available and will likely be used for parts of the curriculum, your initial point of contact with the robot will be via the Robomaster app (for iOs, Android, Mac, or Windows). Launch this and you’ll be greeted with three choices:

Battle

Lab

Solo mode is for simple remote control. Use the joystick on the left to move forward, backward, and strafe. Drag left or right on the screen to rotate. Click the grabber button to bring up that control interface. The main screen area is taken up by the wide-angle first-person-view from Robomaster’s camera. You can also record a number of audio clips to playback on the robot. These are saved to the hardware and can be recalled or set on a loop with hilarious consequences.

The button for follow mode sadly does nothing without the gimbal attached. To move the camera view up or down, you’ll need to manipulate the grabber arm that it’s attached to. The health bar also doesn’t do much unless you’re being pursued by a Robomaster S1 equipped with a laser gun (not even kidding–that’s a thing).

Battle mode is a more structured FPV combat or race event. Without the gimbal and gel bead or laser gun, the battle type aren’t relevant, but the race mode can still be used. By placing the included visual markers around your track, Robomasters must visit each marker in order, which behave as checkpoints. A bonus marker can also be hidden for extra points. The AI recognition system will immediately identify any it sees (though I found this only worked with good lighting), and after visiting each one in turn for the required number of laps, you’re given a resulting time.

Camera and FPV

Unsurprisingly for a company known to produce superb quality video drones, the FPV camera mounted on top of the grabber is also superb.

With an f2.4 aperture and wide 120-degree field of view, I found video transmission to be rock solid and perfectly clear, though this will depend largely on your router and Wi-Fi performance. You can record HD video to a micro-SD card too (not included), which includes audio.

Finally, the Lab is where you can learn all the Robomaster functions, as well as jump right into Python or Scratch coding. Road to Mastery consists of 11 guided Scratch tutorials. DIY Programming presents you with some ready-made Python or Scratch code examples or allows to start afresh. Robo Academy is really just three web links, taking you directly the developer documentation, video tutorials, and programming guide.

Again though, many of these resources rely on the gimbal attachment, so I wasn’t able to fully complete all of these with the EP Core. They’re still beneficial to run through however, and you may find you can convert many of the instructions for use with the grabber alone. The curriculum included with EP Core purchases will be tailored to the grabber.

Scratch Programming the Robomaster EP Core

Now taught to all school children from primary ages and up, Scratch is a visual block programming language that’s surprisingly powerful. The custom Robomaster GUI includes buttons to either bring up a first-person view (to drive the robot back tot he start position before running code again, for instance), and a debug overview of currently defined variables. As the robot runs through programs, blocks of code are highlighted, so it’s easy to follow along and see exactly what’s going on. You can even convert your Scratch program to Python code at any point if you’d rather.

I haven’t actually used Scratch before–the best I had in school was some a BBC Micro Turtle, with BASIC programming. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to pick up, and how much of the Robomaster’s systems are exposed to graphical programming. The “Smart” block section includes things like action for when a visual marker is recognized in view, or when a number of claps are identified.

Robomaster S1 vs EP Core

Robomaster S1 was released last year and is available to purchase for all consumers. It features the same Mecanum wheeled chassis as the EP Core, but doesn’t have as any extensibility when it comes to additional power ports, sensor adaptors, or communications facilities for Arduino, micro:bit, or Raspberry Pi. It’s a more simple remote control and programmable robot, than an entire engineering platform.

The most noticeable difference is that the S1 featured a gel-bead and laser shooter mounted on a gimbal (“Warrior mode”), which could be used for Robomaster battles, or to shoot the included vision marker targets.

Instead, the EP Core instead uses a more education-focused (or school-friendly) grabber attachment, which DJI calls “Engineering mode”.

The EP Core also has a full curriculum for all suitable year groups to follow (though we haven’t had access to that so can’t comment further on it).

While many of the Robomaster app tutorials are currently reliant on having the gimbal attachment, the remote control element and programming components are all there for use with the grabber.

The other difference is pricing: Robomaster S1 can be purchased for around $500 from numerous stockists. The EP Core is only available through educational partners, or via direct inquiry to DJI. I couldn’t draw them on exact pricing (presumably there are bulk discounts for schools), but given the similarity to the S1, I wouldn’t have thought it was too far off the $500 mark.

Is This the Ultimate STEAM Learning Tool?

In a word, yes.

The only slight frustration is that you can’t currently follow all of the Robomaster app tutorials. It’s not clear if these will be expanded to cover more of the grabber functionality, but the full curriculum will be tailored toward it and included with all purchases.

I’m quite envious of any lucky students who have the opportunity to learn to program using the EP Core. It’s simply an incredible learning tool. Sure you could learn Scratch without a cool robot to drive around, but it’s a whole lot more motivating to have that real hardware react to your programming. The EP Core model includes expansion ports and mounting holes for additional sensors and development boards, such as the Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or even NVIDIA’s Jetson Nano.

For pricing, you’ll need to enquire directly with DJI or via their local educational providers. Alternatively, if the expansion capabilities aren’t a concern and you’d rather the gimbal-mounted gel-bead and laser shooter instead of a grabber, check out the Robomaster S1, which is widely available.
