New Calais Group Initiatives to Combat Small Boat Crisis
Tumblr media
Strategic Partnership and Customs Collaboration
In the grand tapestry of international relations and border security, the phenomenon of small boat crossings has emerged as a pressing issue, compelling nations to seek collaborative and innovative solutions. The Calais Group, comprising key northern European countries, has taken a formidable step forward in this endeavour. At a recent meeting in Brussels, hosted by the UK's Home Secretary, James Cleverly, representatives from France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, alongside the European Commission, convened to fortify their commitment to addressing the global migration crisis through strategic partnerships and enhanced customs collaboration. ย  The Customs Partnership Central to the discussions was the unveiling of a new customs partnership, spearheaded by the UK and France, with an open invitation to other Calais Group members for detailed discussions slated for April. Moreover, this initiative aims to dismantle the supply chain of small boat materials by fostering cooperation among participating countries and their customs agencies. Through this partnership, nations anticipate a significant leap in their capacity to share critical information, thereby disrupting the flow of materials essential for small boat construction and preventing their deployment in the English Channel. ย  Amplifying Deterrent Measures The Home Secretary underscored the urgency of bolstering both operational and legislative frameworks to deter illegal migration more effectively across Europe. The focus is not only on the smuggling routes and the broad spectrum of criminal activities but also on the pivotal role of social media platforms in facilitating people smuggling networks. The commitment to intensify efforts in collaboration with social media companies marks a critical aspect of the group's comprehensive strategy to combat illegal migration. ย  Strengthening Collaboration with Frontex Another cornerstone of the Calais Group's approach is the operationalisation of the UK's new agreement with Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. This collaboration is poised to enhance the exchange of information and intelligence, uniting forces to dismantle the smuggling networks that fuel the small boat crisis. ย
A Global Problem Requires Global Solutions
Home Secretary James Cleverly articulated the essence of the challenge and the imperative for international cooperation: "Global problems require global solutions, and the UK is leading the conversation around the changes needed to crack down on people smugglers and break their supply chains." ย  The Calais Group's initiatives, particularly the new customs partnership, signify a robust commitment to obliterating the business model of criminal gangs and halting the perilous journeys across the English Channel. ย  Measurable Progress and Future Ambitions The ministers reflected on the tangible progress achieved since the last meeting of the Calais Group in December 2022. Notably, the incidence of small boat crossings has diminished by 46% compared to the previous year, and the influx of illegal migrants into the UK has decreased by 36%. Additionally, the UK's efforts in repatriating individuals without the right to remain have resulted in over 25,000 returns last year, underscoring the effectiveness of the collective measures implemented thus far. ย
Conclusion
As the Calais Group advances its strategic initiatives, the international community watches with keen interest, hopeful that these measures will contribute significantly to resolving the complexities of the migration crisis. The collaborative spirit demonstrated by the UK and its European counterparts offers a promising blueprint for global cooperation, aiming to ensure that the principles of security, humanitarianism, and legality prevail in the face of daunting challenges. ย  Sources: THX News, Home Office &ย The Rt Hon James Cleverly MP. Anticipated Inclusion of India in the UK's Safe States List to Tackle Illegal Migration
The United Kingdom is reportedly considering including India in its list of safe countries as part of an effort to fortify its immigration system, aiming to discourage individuals seeking illegal asylum and immigration. This move would grant the immigration department the authority to reject candidates who entered the country unlawfully, emphasizing that those arriving without following proper procedures will not be allowed to stay.
In response to this issue, a proposal for the change has been presented in UK parliament with the objective of promoting legal immigration. If a country is added to the safe list, travelers from that nation are less likely to face prosecution under Section 80AA of the UK's legislation. This adjustment is anticipated to facilitate the repatriation of nationals in accordance with the law. The proposal is part of the Illegal Migration Act 2023, currently under consideration in parliamentary discussions.
The current list of safe countries includes Albania, Switzerland, and member states of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA). The UK government anticipates benefits from the Illegal Migration Act, foreseeing a reduction in criminal activities and deterring travelers from undertaking perilous journeys, such as crossing the English Channel in small boats.
Countries often maintain lists of safe or low-risk states for various purposes, and the potential inclusion of India in this list signifies the UK government's perception of it as a secure nation, free from human rights violations. This could lead to the repatriation of asylum seekers to India or potentially to another third country.
In a parallel development, Canada is expected to introduce a citizenship program targeted at undocumented immigrants, aligning with its goal to welcome 500,000 immigrants annually by 2025. The program aims to address the vulnerability and risk of deportation faced by illegal immigrants, including those with expired visas who have stayed on despite legal documents for work or study. This initiative is pursued despite Canada facing housing challenges and elevated inflation rates, recognizing the crucial role of the immigrant population in bolstering the country's workforce and fostering economic prosperity.
Choosing the legal approach to travel and complying with immigration criteria is seen as a more straightforward process. For assistance in travel needs, VisaMint Overseas Services, a premier Immigration & Overseas Career Firm in India, is available to offer reliable advice and assistance in selecting the ideal destination for education, travel, immigration, or employment abroad.

UK and Tรผrkiye Sretegic Plans for tackle llegal Migration
Tumblr media
ย  Strengthened Alliance to Curb Illegal Migration
In a significant move to tackle the escalating issue of illegal migration, law enforcement agencies from the United Kingdom and Turkey have announced a groundbreaking partnership. This collaboration aims to combat organized immigration crime and disrupt the supply chain of materials used in illegal migration journeys, including small boats and boat parts. ย  Minister's Strategic International Efforts The initiation of this strategic partnership follows Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick's recent visit to Turkey. Over the past months, Jenrick has undertaken a series of crucial international visits to bolster cooperation and address the challenges posed by illegal migration and smuggling networks. These visits spanned countries including Belgium, Tunisia, Italy, and Turkey, with a focus on strengthening alliances to counter the intricate routes utilized by smugglers. ย  Successes and Collaborative Efforts The effectiveness of these international collaborations is becoming evident. Recent agreements with nations such as Bulgaria and Georgia have yielded positive results. Moreover, closer ties with France and Albania have led to a remarkable 90% reduction in Albanian small boat arrivals in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year, while French authorities reported a 40% surge in prevented illegal crossing attempts. ย
A Center of Excellence to Combat Immigration Crime
A pivotal facet of the deepened UK-Turkey partnership is the establishment of a new operational "Centre of Excellence" by the Turkish National Police. This center, backed by UK support, is designed to serve as a hub for tackling organized immigration crime. By enhancing the alignment of intelligence and promoting swift information exchange between law enforcement agencies, the center aims to expedite operational responses. ย  Strengthened Data Exchange and Intelligence Sharing A newly forged memorandum of understanding solidifies the commitment of both nations to amplify the exchange of customs data, information, and intelligence feeds. This initiative aims to bolster collaborative efforts in disrupting the supply chain of small boats and materials utilized in illegal migration. ย  Joint Resources and Countermeasure Deployment Efforts to curb illegal migration are being reinforced through joint resource deployment. The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) and Home Office Intelligence staff will work closely with their Turkish counterparts. Additionally, increased deployment of UK officers in Turkey will enhance collaborative operations against criminal networks that facilitate illegal journeys. ย  Determination and Collaboration: A United Front Speaking on the issue, Home Secretary Suella Braverman underscored the unwavering commitment to dismantle people-smuggling gangs and prevent illegal boat crossings. The alliance with Turkey, a close and steadfast ally, is poised to empower law enforcement agencies to jointly address this global concern and disrupt the small boat supply chain. ย  Unyielding Resolve to Combat Organized Crime Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick emphasized the scale of the challenge posed by illegal migration and heralded the strategic partnership with Turkey as a decisive step in confronting it. The intensified exchange of intelligence, technology, and personnel is expected to dismantle smuggling networks and thwart the manufacturing and supply of materials facilitating illegal crossings. ย  Towards a Comprehensive Approach This robust partnership also addresses the export of small boats and boat parts across Europe, which plays a critical role in the tactics of people smugglers. This widespread practice involves the transportation of hundreds of boats and components through the continent each year, highlighting the extent of criminal activity. ย
Navigating the Path Forward
This dynamic collaboration is set to gain further traction with the upcoming UK-Turkey Migration Dialogue meeting scheduled for the autumn in London. Both nations are committed to raising the issue of illegal migration on international platforms, demonstrating their shared determination to combat this challenge. ย
Pioneering Global Cooperation
This partnership marks the next step in the UKโ€™s efforts to strengthen cooperation with international partners on the global challenge of illegal migration. This joint work with allies is a key strand of the Prime Ministerโ€™s plan to stop the boats, driving efforts upstream to clamp down on the criminality that enables illegal crossings to the UK.
