2022 Rostelecom finals entry #3
Junior men free program
Grigory Fyodorov
Thoughts: I didn’t like the neckline on his shirt
Nikolai Ugozhaev
Thoughts: his side profile is amazing, look at his freckles.
Kyril Andrusik
Thoughts: I caught a little glimpse of the warmup. Both him and Ilya had this listlessness about them. *hopes Ilya isn’t sick because he BAE*
Kyril Sarnovsky
Thoughts: I think this is the first time that I got a good look at the design on the back of his shirt. It’s a dragon!
Ilya Yablokov
Thoughts: look at the way his shoulder muscles move! He’s so pretty.

This article by Russian media historian Ilya Yablokov discusses 5 different conspiracy theories Putin has pushed in Russia:
The West wants to take over parts of Russia’s land and resources.
NATO wants to invade Russia and “has turned Ukraine into a military camp.”
Opposition to Putin’s regime in Russia is sponsored by the West, especially the U.S.
The worldwide LGBTQ+ movement is part of a “plot” to subvert Russian society.
The US and Ukraine are developing “bioweapons to use against Russia.”
Given the current attacks on the LGBTQ+ community coming from the far right in the U.S., I thought excerpts from the article about this particular Russian conspiracy might shed light on the anti-LGBTQ+ right-wing initiatives in the U.S.
The global L.G.B.T.Q. movement is a plot against Russia
This claim — starkly captured by Mr. Putin’s statement that in the West, “children can play five or six gender roles,” threatening Russia’s “core population” — has been brewing for a decade. A criminal case in 2012 against Pussy Riot, an anarchic punk band critical of the regime, was the tipping point. The Kremlin sought to portray the band and its followers as a set of sexually subversive provocateurs whose aim was to destroy the Russian Orthodox Church and traditional values. The complaints spread to foreign nongovernmental organizations and L.G.B.T.Q. activists, accused of corrupting Russians from infancy. Soon, anti-L.G.B.T.Q. scaremongering became a major plank of Kremlin policy.
It was remarkably effective: By 2020, one-fifth of Russians surveyed said they wanted to “eliminate” lesbian and gay people from Russian society. They were responding to a propaganda campaign, undertaken by state media, claiming that L.G.B.T.Q. rights were an invention of the West, with the potential to shatter Russian social stability. Mr. Putin, unveiling his party’s manifesto ahead of 2021’s parliamentary elections, took things a step further — claiming that when people in the West weren’t trying to outright abolish the concept of gender, they were allowing teachers in schools to decide on a child’s gender, irrespective of parental wishes. It was, he said, a crime against humanity.
The West’s progressive attitudes to sexual diversity eventually played into the Ukrainian war effort. In March, Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, claimed the invasion was necessary to protect Russian speakers in Ukraine from a West that insists any entrant to its club of nations host a gay pride march. The supposed predations of L.G.B.T.Q. rights had to be met with righteous force.

Junior Worlds - Men’s SP
Aleksander Selevko had the best performance of the event. He was on fire today. And it’s so nice to see him deliver a skate like that in front of homecrowd.
Also his in 4th going into the free, and I don’t think anyone would have put him in the final warm-up in their pronostics, so...
Second best performance was Andrew Torgashev. His entire performance, as they say in Russian “was on one breath”. I was surprised when he reached the end.
Noah Bodenstein did not deliver technically but his posture and carriage on the ice is very pleasing. Him and Ivan Schmuratko were the highlights of the first two groups. I love how sincere and intense Ivan is when he skates. He lives for his program and that’s always a joy to watch.
Ilya Yablokov did a very good job. I like this SP very much, it’s a bit in the same vein as Bradie’s one. Also I like his shirt with the broken clock.
Joseph Phan was a discovery for me. I have not been paying attention to him and I think I should because that was a nice skate. Nice choreo as well. I like the recurring beastie squats throughout the program and the StepSeq
Mark Gorodnitsky did not have a really good skate, and popped the axel, but he really performed and I love his SP. Love the steps and the music. Also love his shirt.
Gabriele Frangipani was a bit lowballed in PCS I think because that was well-done and yet...
Sihyeong Lee gave a nice performance, but has a really lackluster SP.
I was happy to see Andrei Mozalev do well, as I was really worried for him. Guy had an insane amount of comps this season. Basically competed every two weeks. Even the commentators at RusNats noted that, saying that coaching team was maybe going a bit overboard with the guy. Anyway Mozalev has probably been the most consistent skater this season. I don’t think he missed the podium once. And here he gave a nice perf. It was polished, intricate enough and emotional. I’m glad he ditched those horrible brown pants for black ones.
Daniel Grassl was not really happy about his score but I do agree with him being behind Shun. I really like his SP, he always creates a moment on the ice while he skates, but I’ve seen him skate it better this season. Here he was lacking a bit of fire or passion, and it really showed during the step sequence. Also Daniel Grassl is an acquired taste imho. I love him a lot, and he’s really special, but today his limbs were all over the place, and the combo too.
Adam Siao Him Fa, on the other hand, could have been higher. Yes the landing on the Axel was rough, but he was clean and perform the hell out of his SP.
Shun Sato was really nice, still not really my skater. Also I thought he was a bit off the music, but that could have been the live transmission which started to freeze a lot at that point of the competition.
Stephen Gogolev did not have a good skate compared to his other competitors, but that was a noted improvment on his part.
I adore his SP. It’s intricate and well choreographed (also all those people who basically went “goodbye transitions and quality skating now that you left Orser to train with Raf”, fuck you! That SP is packed with transitions, and perhaps the best choreographed among the junior mens). It was also too difficult for him to pull off, and it was painful to watch at the beginning of the season. Here he still was too stiff, but after he popped the axel, he gave it everything he had, especially the step sequence, so the end result was very decent.
And finally
Yuma! Yuma! Yuma!!!!!

The ISU’s preview of the 2020 World Junior Figure Skating Championships. Stephen got a brief mention.
Russia sends a trio of contenders to Tallinn with ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final and Youth Olympic Games silver medalist Andrei Mozalev (season’s best 241.48) and ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final and Youth Olympic Games bronze medalist Daniil Samsonov (season’s best 250.51) plus ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Finalist Petr Gumennik (season’s best 232.39). Other contenders include 2018 ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final Champion Stephen Gogolev (CAN), Adam Siao Him Fa (FRA) and Joseph Phan (CAN).
Samsonov has actually withdrawn from this event and has been replaced by Ilya Yablokov. Stephen now enters this event with the fourth highest FS TES of those competing here.
If you are travelling to Junior Worlds, you may find this page on the ISU’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak useful.
I hope everyone stays safe and enjoys the event.

JGP Slovenia Men’s Free Program #14-17
Georgi Reshtenko(CZE)
Thoughts: by the time he finished, his bangs were all over the place. They started off looking so good!
Matthew Nielsen(USA)
Thoughts: He’s missing something. Only a couple American men have made it to my good side(Jeremy Abbott among them). So far I don’t see it.
Younghyn Cha(KOR)
Thoughts: he’s almost there. Regardless, Koreans are so pretty
Ilya Yablokov(RUS)
Thoughts: A little more sparkle and he would’ve have been golden
JGP Slovenia Short Dance #1-2
Bekker/Hernandez(GBR)
Thoughts: Nice to see Coomes and Buckland getting better from behind the boards. Although I think B/H are still a little too new for me to form an opinion just yet.
Bunina/Kuznetsov(EST)
Thoughts: she’s grown so much. How have these two staid together so long?!
