hi hello!! i've been noticing in a few of your recent post that you're preparing for the mcat hehe.. could you tell us more about it? what kinds of things are you doing to prep? when are you targeting taking it? how's the studying going?
OK YEAH SO FAR I haven’t started because I’m focusing on finishing up my classes this quarter, but I’ve been doing some random Khan Academy videos or practice questions whenever im bored (in class) or in bed before sleeping or whatever. I’m lucky because I’m a biochem major and all the biochem stuff is coming really easy to me (thank you tienson)
next quarter I will be going through all the khan academy lessons (like 2 a day cuz that’s reasonable) and I will start reading the books (I have a kaplan mcat prep set) and ill start with things im not familiar with the most (like psychology and stuff) and im really hoping to get through most of the review and reading by the end of june. im planning on taking a mock mcat that my school career center is offering by the end of the quarter
im leaving the country for a couple weeks but when i get back in july ill immerse myself in more practice questions and find the holes in my prep. ill be really strict about timing myself and simulating the testing scenarios too (it’s been a while since i studied for a BIG test but im using my old SAT prep strategies lol)
i take the exam on september 14!
i really need to work on my attention span A LOT though (and my stamina lol)

hi this isn't rly tj related but im struggling sm to improve on my sat score (rn im fluctuating around the 1400s) and im gonna take it on august 27th and i want 1550+, argh what should i do
Response from Penelope:
It's absolutely TJ related by RTTJ's definition—don't worry!
In terms of improving SAT score I like to start by answering a few questions. How are you scoring in the various sections? Is the issue timing or is it not knowing how to answer the questions? How consistent are you both in answering questions correctly or incorrectly? For reading especially, is there a passage type that you struggle with a lot?
Writing and Math are usually much easier to target than reading (because if you know what you're getting wrong and why you're getting it wrong, you can practice those specific questions to improve your score). These two sections are more straightforward, and if you have any friends or older siblings that have them down you can always ask them to help explain. Khan Academy is also a delightful resource, if you're not using it already! Obviously don't practice so much you burn out, but if you keep grinding the questions in these sections and recognizing why you're getting answers wrong you'll be able to improve your score.
Reading is a little harder to manage than the other sections because the passages can be similar (as the questions are, for sure), but they can also be very different, both in terms of between tests and within the same test. The order the questions come in is almost always the same, though—this can make it annoying to practice with non official materials because they don't necessarily always have that order. Getting used to reading the passages in a way where you can most quickly answer the questions you get is definitely important. Also remember to always look for the evidence! If an answer choice is even a little bit wrong, then it's the wrong answer. While it may seem subjective, there is definitely always a right answer by this definition on the SAT.
If you don't get your ideal score the first time, you can take it again. Worst case if you still can't do well on the SAT, try the ACT! If you do well on one and not the other, just submit the one you did better on. Good luck!!

i'm from england but i want to take the sat to apply to us universities. i'm so confused on how to revise for it though, the study guides on amazon seem to only have practice tests in. how do i know what i need to revise omg like are there no books that have all the revision material to learn in? (im going to be doing the sat with essay, and the biology and chem tests if that helps) like in uk textbooks we have everything you could possibly need to learn in them so we can learn all the content
Hey there anon!
Now I’m not quite sure whether you’re asking for SAT prep book recs, or for tips in general, but heeey, let’s do both!!!
I am not too familiar with most prep books, but what I’m using is “Cracking the new SAT by Princeton review” and I’m liking it so far. It doesn’t give you the material the traditional way (it obviously won’t give you the vocab lists for example), but it just teaches you all you need through plenty of tips and techniques. It has 6 full practice tests, and what I like about it the most is that it gives you super clear explanations in terms of corrections (sometimes in English tests, 2 answers may seem fine to you for example, so it shows you how to choose the very right one, aka the one they want to see on your answer sheet) +its tests are some of the most accurate ones so you don’t need to worry: the legit test looks similar to Priceton practice ones. In short, it’s more of a study resource for the test than the material itself.
When it comes to SAT study tips, there are countless ways to get there, maybe start by learning some vocabulary (preferably in context), go over some mathematical concepts (do not worry, the SAT maths look nothing like what you’re taking in hs: it’s super easy), and if you still struggle with something or just need something extra/a free prep course, Khan Academy should be your best-bud!
Apart from that, what you really need to know is that the SAT isn’t designed to test your knowledge as much as to measure your ability to take a standardized test. Its difficulty lies in the timing rather than the questions. Thus, try to take as much practice tests as you can.
About the SAT subject tests, I do not have a clear idea so I can’t really tell you how to study for them. But one thing I know is that you should take the test according to your college interests (like if you’re into engineering, then take Maths or Physics and not like world History, otherwise it won’t make sense to colleges you’re applying to). These tests are always a bonus point to get you in colleges you’re aiming for, but remember, only if you ace them, or else it’ll just decrease your chances to get accepted. Same thing goes for the essay by the way, “go big or go home” so it won’t negatively affect your total score.
Sooo yeah, hope this helps and GOOD LUCK :)) (everything will be fine, I believe in you baby anon)

how hard are the sats?
Uhh depends really. I really struggle in math so i barely hit my benchmark there but in reading/english i did really well. Idk, it tends to be pretty hard for me, its like. Much harder than an actual math test? If you look at khan academy they have some practice tests to give you an idea ejkskd.... but im also doing the essay which is another hour on top of the normal time so. Yeah it runs about 8:00-1:30
