The cover for "Sountrack From An Imaginary Western", an album i found on youtube while walking earlier. Besides being a steller concept (and now i want soundtracks for every genre of imaginary movie) while i was walking along a steep hillside the sun cast my shadow upon the wall of dirt beside me and suddenly I WAS the cowboy protagonist trying to escape my troubled cowboy past. 10/10 would recommend

Day 21: Sigur Rós - Kveikur
Tumblr media
I will not go into details about who Sigur Rós are. They’ve been around for 25 years. You know them. If you don’t, Wikipedia hold all the details you need.
If I had to pick one band/artist to listen to for the rest of my life and I wouldn’t be allowed to listen to anyone elses music, my choice is very easy: Sigurd Rós. The answer to that question has been the same for almost 10 years. In the summer of 2013 I was about to leave for my 5 month student exchange. Norway was finally happening. And in the 3 months leading up to me leaving for Bergen, I had managed to tick several boxes of my life’s to do list. I bought a flat. And I saw Sigurd Rós live. They released Kveikur, their 7th album, in June 2013 and I went to see them at the Colours of Ostrava festival in July. Kveikur became the sountrack to my time in Bergen, especially my commutes on Bybanen. And my go-to-album for several years after that. I like Ágætis byrjun (1999) and Takk (2005) a lot. But Kveikur is a special one for me.

As Joe Gross pointedly mentioned in his review for the Rolling Stone (yes, I do admit I read reviews), Kveikur is their most structured and grittiest album so far. I would add, that it’s still ambiente, but louder, more intense a darker one. And there’s more structure and rythm. Sigur Rós have incorporated huge climaxes in this album, but their songs still posses the same dreamy soothing quality as we find on their previous albums. But this one is comforting, dreamy, dark, intense and cathartic in equal measure. More cathartic then their previous releases.
Ísjaki (transl. Iceberg) is fairly straightforward and the stong melody with the fluctuating vocals, shimmering vocal hook and thumping war-like drums will ensure you will remember this song for longer then most of the other songs on the album. It’s my favourite song of the album. If any Sigur Rós song should be described as agressive, it’s Brennisteinn (transl. Brimstone). It really has some volcanic qualities. The drums, strings, and groaning guitar rumble and blast along, then half way through the song, Jónsi’s beautiful vocal line lifts the whole song above the layer of imaginary clouds.
Bláþráður (transl. Thin Thread) is percussive and grand song that has an air of grace around it. It reminds me of the sheer beauty of vast empty landscapes in Scandinavia, such as the Hardangervidda or Sarek. (Those are the ones I know and have been to. The Icelandic ones must be on another level.)
Rafstraumur (transl. Electric Current) feels like a blend of both their old and new styles. It includes a swelling melodic cacophony and the hook, line and sinker, the usual parts of their songs. And a soothing climax. Yet this time there’s a grit and metellic taste to it. Hrafntinna (transl. Obsidian) is a slower and less agressive song. It feels a bit warmer, very fragile and glass like. A lot like obsidians are. It features a lot of brass and metal instruments: fractured cymbals, sonorous brass, steel guitar strings.

Happy Tuesday, relax and enjoy.
