Welcome Home Neighbor~ ✨ You and your friends enjoy passing the time exploring old and abandoned places and selling the leftovers for spare cash, but what would happen if things don't go according to plan?
Chapter 1/?
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You did not like this adventure one bit.
“Oh come on Y/N! What’re ya? Chicken?!”
Your friends Badgered you relentlessly as you all approached the tattered and run-down building. The once brightly coloured sign is now barely legible reading “Playfellow Workshops” In bold letters.
“I don't know guys... This building looks old anyways, I doubt there's anything in there worth taking”
Your eyes scan the shattered windows and brightly coloured “No Trespassing” sign, You don't know how you always get into these situations with your friends. It seemed whenever you were around it was always,
“Hey, I know a good spot to go to!”... or... “C'mon! We can use the money for a new Game!”
Nevertheless, your friends would never try to put you in danger... Right?
Yeah, nope they definitely would if it meant you guys could afford the new Nintendo game.
“C'mon, what if there's some vintage film in there? Think of all the possibilities Y/N!”
One of your friends shouted as he pushed you toward the entrance of the building. Your shoes made an imprint into the gravel driveway as you tried to stop yourself from going any closer.
You did not like the look of this place, the energy was off and bad vibes were lingering all around the already busted open wired gate.
However as you looked behind your shoulder, you knew from the looks on all of your friend's faces you weren't getting yourself out of this one.
So, with a heavy sigh, you marched forward past the tattered gates and steeled yourself for what you might find.
As you approached the giant red doors of the Studio, you remembered most places when they are shut down have the door bolted shut from the inside for this exact reason!
A small grin sneaked its way onto your face as you put one hand out and turned your head, ready to tell your friends there was no way to enter the building.
Of course, the door had to open flawlessly with a small push. Your small grin disappeared as fast as your friends had, with them nowhere to be found in your sight. They did that a lot though so you pushed forward into the studio.
First and foremost this place was big. It must have had many productions and props for it to be filled to the extent it was.
Boxes and cobwebs littered the concrete floor, a thick layer of dust coated the walls and plaques hung on the walls, the only light source being the dim light provided through the shattered windows.
You wouldn't get far without a flashlight though, as you searched your pockets for your phone your eyes found themselves scanning the walls for a light switch. Your efforts for a light switch proving to be for naught as you finally found your phone and clicked on the light.
Papers littered the floor, some covered with sketches of what you could only assume to be characters, and some with writing and... Was that a contract??
This place seemed to be in a devastating mess, even the concrete flooring felt unstable as you took steps farther into the Studio.
One thing caught your eye regardless, making you trek deeper and deeper to get a better glimpse. It was hard to tell by the dim light coming from your phone, but it seemed to be a Set used for the Characters to interact with.
A bright red house sat in the center of the room, its mechanical eyes shut with rust covering the surface. If the required items were remaining to get it to work, you knew by now there was no hope of restoring it.
You moved on to a farther corner of the warehouse, your curiosity seeming to reach its peak as you saw a door leading to an office. You rolled up your sleeve to wipe the dust from the door, it read
“Directors Office.”
Well… If there were any profitable things to be found you guess they would be in there, reaching for the door handle, it jiggled in your grip. Locked. Of course it was.
Dropping down onto one knee, you began to search your pockets to see if you had anything that would help with breaking into the office. Not very keen on returning to your friends empty-handed.
All you could find though was a wadded-up Five, a broken pin from your school backpack, and a soda tab…
…You considered yourself a very organized person.
Rising to your feet once more, holding the broken pin in your hand you began to try to finagle it into the lock, and by some miracle it... Worked?
You weren't one to doubt your talents but this just felt wrong, the lock should not have opened the door as quickly as it did.
The thought left your mind as you pushed forward, you didn’t want to be in here longer than necessary.
To your dismay, all that you could find were more animation and puppeteering sketches, they looked very intricate and old, with detailing on how to hold the strings for a puppet named Wally Darling and such.
From what you could gather from the scattered documents, this studio used to run a show titled Welcome Home, where the main Puppet named Wally would go and have adventures with his friends.
You ‘wished your adventures didn't always lead to trespassing’ you thought as your eyes landed on a rather cute piece of art containing Wally and his friends.
The designs were cute and simple, it was no wonder the show had its successes, one thought still lingered, why did this place shut down?
You understood the concept of bankruptcy, it was a common theme in your economics class, but this didn't make any sense.
The papers on the desk nonetheless clearly stated a bankruptcy claim, and a lawsuit file, with highlighted words stating there were OSHA violations, and rumours of puppeteers being harmed on the job.
It felt as if your mind was being run in circles the more you examined the papers on the desk,
Until you heard footsteps.
Your breath is caught in your throat. The footsteps sounded like they were coming from the front of the building, recognized by the sounds of glass being stepped on. Of course they had to be coming from the only known entrance to this place.
Your brain quickly jumpstarted back into functioning as adrenaline coursed through your veins. Clicking off your flashlight you picked up what papers you could recognize, At least you wouldn't be empty-handed. Making quick work of them and folding them into your jacket pocket.
Your hair stood up on its neck as the steps rapidly approached. You had that cold feeling running up and down your spine as you scanned the room for any sign of escape.
Other than the main office door of course there was no other way to flee. Your muddied shoes provided you with quieter footsteps as you crept towards the door.
The broken windows allow for minimal light to produce shadows of boxes and various rusted equipment.
One thing remained prominent in your mind, however,
Where were the footsteps coming from?
There was no shadow in the front of the building, yet those menacing footsteps kept crescendoing in your direction.
You had no time to worry about this, you needed to escape, and from the looks of it, this may be your only chance to do so. With a final deep breath, you shot from your previous place of hiding and took off in the direction of the doors.
The dim sunlight from the windows allowed you to avoid various boxes and obstacles in your path, You were not expecting however to feel the eyes of a predator on your back.
You tried your best to ignore it, but your breath proceed to become more laboured and panicked. Feeling as if you were a mouse caught in a glue trap. Your feet feel as heavy as concrete bricks as they hit the floor, where are you even running?
You couldn't tell. You tripped on what seemed to be your own feet, the world spinning around you, and you felt sick. What was going on? You felt panic proceed to grip your very soul as you felt the weak structure crack under your body.
This was not how this was supposed to go.
You wished you just stayed home. You could have minded your business and scrolled on the internet, but no. You had to be nosy and go exploring.
Your breaths became crazed and your eyes glued themselves onto the gray concrete. Not daring to look behind or beside you, in fear of making eye contact with what had frozen you with fear.
None of that seemed to matter anymore as the spinning feeling took hold of your brain. You could feel a migraine begin to pierce your eyes making your head throb.
Before you passed out,
you could have sworn the concrete was not this soft.

driven by her own hatred and guilt, lilith finally gives in. her mind and soul crumbled beneath the seed family as she struggles to come to terms with her new life. the road ahead of her never looked more rocky
A humble light fluttered through the warmth of the room, settling like golden blossoms on each piece of ornate yet soft furniture it seemed to drift over. The faint yet inviting aroma of food mixed with the steady chorus of chatter accompanied the gentle glow, enveloping the dining room in a fuzz which seemed foreign and distant to the young and demure girl. Her milky white skin seemed sickly against the welcoming shine of the overhead light and her reluctant yet bitter attitude felt like a stranger to the intimate scene. The past few days had seemed to bleed together with a crude series of events leaving a stinging imprint on the mind of the girl, abandoning her thoughts with a potent mixture of guilt and grief; something which was far from the joyous occasion of the Sunday dinner. Lilith's quivering hands folded neatly in her lap, the bruised ends of her fingers gently toying with the icy fabric of her light floral dress. The youthful garment felt pretty in the young girls eyes however, the length exposed pale legs with a colourful array of marks and bruises splattered like paint across her shins. It was embarrassing - the memory of what had happened seemed as fresh as the grazes on her knees.
A gentle breeze pulled the girl back to reality with the subtle chime of plates and cutlery diverting her attention back towards the delicately garnished dining table. Flowers of the garden were intertwined down the centre of the white cloth, the subtle arrangement of lilies and pure roses seeming to settle the bitter sting of fear which had risen within the young girl. It reminded Lilith of the bouquets that she would gift to her mother whilst she was sick but it was enough to bring a small yet meaningful smile to her gentle face. Even if those moments lingered deep in the past, it was the only proof that the girl had a life before whatever twisted situation she found herself in the present and it was a world she could seem to escape to when in her darkest moments. One which was simpler and devoid of not just complexity of growing pains and the ache of grief but also the Seed family.
The smile on the young girls face seem to falter as her pale eyes drifted across the plate in front of her which was positioned neatly on an intricate lace placemat. It was different, they didn't trust her. Plastic cutlery was presented on each side of the plate with even the knife missing from the set and the food was organised with each portion pre-cut and determined. Her stomach sunk as heat pricked at her skin in a mixture of embarrassment but also anger; she couldn't pretend that all was well when chains still resided around her wrists, binding her deep under the control of the family. Lilith broke from her position on the wooden chair with her trembling hands slamming down on the embellished table as her legs wobbled beneath her. Her actions were quickly followed by a more dominant and abrupt force as the oldest of the three brothers reared up, looming over her broken and frightened figure from the opposite side of the table.
Silence shrouded the table as the outburst disrupted the warmth, covering the table in a dense fog of tension which clouded the young girls thoughts and pricked at her soft eyes. The familiar sting of tears grazed her like the skid of innocent knees against concrete as a fractured series of sobs cracked through her empty chest.
"Jacob - Lilith calm down, come with me."
The gentle yet unusual voice of the Father simmered through the ears of the young girl as she felt his scarred hand sink into her own. She could feel herself being quietly ushered away from the decorated scene of the family, her tired feet aching to find a purpose in the woven carpet as tears pooled deep in her wounds. It was a familiar sting which Lilith could easily recall, it was similar to those moments where she was escorted from the classroom because the bruises that day were too dark. It wasn't the conversation which would hurt, it was the embarrassment that resided within it. A distasteful grunt broke the silence which she had left as the sparse murmur of voices seeped through the dining room in her absence. Tears continued to spill from within her pallid eyes as she was settled down against the kitchen counter, the cluttered surface matching the unsettling comfort which seemed to spread through the house. Lilith's hands quivered as they curled deep within the patterned fabric of her dress, her cloudy eyes following each twitch and flicker of her fingers as they desperately attempted to avoid contact with the Father.
"I- I hate- it here!" She sobbed out, her voice rupturing through her throat in a strained cry; one which was clearly distinguishable by any lingering ears. It seemed as if her heart had leaked through her words after what had felt like weeks of swallowing all of her toxic emotions, yet the ache didn't seem to go away.
"I just wanna' fucking go home!"
A firm pair of hands graced Lilith's flushed face yet the invasion felt almost welcoming and warm, she had expected the hands of man so detached and sadistic to match that of the winter storm which ruptured through her mind - but they didn't.
"Lily," Joseph hushed as he grazed his thumbs across the soft scarlet skin of the young girl, catching the tears which cascaded from her eyes.
"God saw a light within you, one which will thrive and burn bright."
Lilith could feel her heavy head guided up the Father's hands with the wet stains residing on her blushed skin shimmering beneath the golden glow of the overhead light, softening her look of distress.
"You're journey has not been an easy one but God has given you a chance, we're here to guide you."
All the young girl could bring herself to do was utter a gentle nod with the calculated words of the Father sinking deep into her thoughts; the prophecy that he had manufactured disturbed her, she couldn't allow herself to think that she was so special.
"No matter how much you are apart of this family and today, I will not allow you to sit in there and suffer like you are," Joseph admitted in a reasoned voice, the tone of his words seeming to falter ever so slightly from its usual mannerism.
"Why don't you go into the sitting room, we'll join you when we're finished little-one."

『 Androids were things made in the shadows of human insatiability. The feeling of being a creator was second to none but what could you do when the euphoria turned to deep rooted horror?
What really made you human? 』
Tumblr media
If there was one thing she dreaded about her day to day life, it would have to be the ever lingering hours past midnight where the sky should have been lit up with stars, though retained nothing but an inky blackness where the city’s horizon drowned them out. It was always then when she found herself tangled in webs: invisible and wretched ropes twisting around her feet in the hopes of dragging her into the public eye.
Nonetheless, it was inevitable and, as she walked down the unfortunately familiar alleyways and streets, she knew that there was no other option than to resign herself to her fate.
Neon lights shone down on the ground, figures falling across the concrete with uncertainty - shadows of moving branches and far away people melding together into the harsh lines of the surrounding buildings. Same old, same old, really.
Today, she didn’t have much of a plan other than to wander around and make herself as forgettable as possible, the dark coloured clothes she wore helping to aid in this. Maybe she would find something to do, but the likelihood wasn’t very big.
Each footstep echoed, though faded just as soon as it became a reality. She didn’t think much of it, more so happy that her impression wouldn’t last long.
Where could she go? What to do…
She turned into a secluded alley, the abandoned road home to many of the wealthier residents' unwanted and discarded items. Weirdly, she didn’t often frequent these spaces and it was mostly due to the fact that every square inch was always being surveyed and watched with bobbing cameras. It might have been wiser to install hidden cameras, but the cost outweighed the use when all it would capture was footage of rubbish.
There was nothing interesting, the usual designer bags and exponential food waste nothing to be excited about. Then again, one man’s trash was another man’s treasure - or so they said. She picked up a clean bag, holding it at the handles by her fingertips and swinging it as she climbed up on a box and pulled it over the filming camera that dutifully watched over its section up on the brick wall. It twisted and turned in response, trying to nudge off whatever was blocking its feed, but she was more interested in the thing he had noticed hidden amongst the litter.
A large and undisturbed wooden box lay on the ground, its surface covered with dirt and streaks of rain but the vague outline of a banner imprinted beneath the filth had caught her eyes. And so, she kicked away whatever debris there was and reached to grab ahold of it.
Her fingers ached, the thick and bulbous wood of the box scraping against her skin as she used all her strength to haul it upright. A hulking mass teetered in her grip, her body used to stabilise it on the ground with the edge closest to her hitting the ground with a resounding ‘thud!’.
It looked beaten and worn down, rain damage creating ripples on the surface. Ink leaked down the sides, letters creating pools underneath that made it hard to understand any of the writing. Even if she squinted and got up close, there was no hope for reading any of the small and unintelligible font. If only she could get it open; something this heavy almost always had something useful inside. Even if it was nothing but scrap metal, it could still fetch a good price if melted down.
And, if she was honest, she was in no position to turn down anything that could offer her the luxury of money - even if it was hidden within centimetres thick wooden panelling and screws that seemed to be firmly lodged in.
She had no idea how she was supposed to take this thing home with her, but she would try regardless. Stealing another glance at the blocked camera, she pushed the box as hard as she could, her feet sliding under the elevated base to feel wheels underneath. A relieved exhale followed; she wouldn’t have to drag this out after all.
Even so, it was too early to count her blessings and she needed to actually get out of this narrow alleyway before conjuring up dreams of grandeur. Being too cocky had definitely been the leading cause of failure in a few of her plans.
Her fingers slipped and she hissed, grabbing on to it at an awkward angle and feeling a splinter dig itself into her unprotected skin. Even if it stung, she needed to ignore it and dig it out later when time and circumstances allowed her to. Another quick glance to the camera, the bag swaying precariously. She had always hated being watched, almost as much as she hated scrounging around in off road areas.
The wheels creaked, moaning from having to support weight after rotting and rusting, and the wood seemed to fracture despite her never having heard of wood doing such a thing! If she sped down this downhill area, she would get out of the street faster - at the risk of losing control of course.
But, when the camera moved again and the fabric shifted before floating down, she knew that she had to close her eyes and pray that there was no law enforcement lying in wait for her at the bottom. She wheeled it as fast as she could and held on with a foot slotted into the small bar at the underside of the box. This would either end well or completely terribly.
And so, she pushed and down she went. If she could have articulated anything properly at that moment, she would have described the feeling as similar to freefalling, only instead of having a fail safe of a parachute, she had the welcome risk of more splinters. The mix of both fear and adrenaline lasted only a few seconds, the straight road at the end becoming nearer and nearer.
Letting her free foot dangle, the heel of her thick boots scraped against the ground, the friction making her soles hot with the feeling bordering on burning before the box slowed down enough for her to use both of her heels. Either this succeeded or she would end up with a few large bruises.
Wind rushed past her ears, making her tear up with the intensity of it against her eyes. Her grip tightened; almost there.
Her soles continued to grind against the floor before coming to a halt with the slope becoming more gentle. She was sure she had created a variety of skid marks against the tarmac but that hardly mattered now when she was now onto the next leg of her plan: getting back home without running into anyone else. That task would definitely be easier said than done, though, thankfully, it would just be a case of memory application.
Peering around the side, she saw no one there and quickly made her way around the bend - the cameras in this location long disabled by others who also hated being observed.
No sounds of anything other than her own footsteps and squeaking wheels was audible, a happy surprise in all honesty. There was only another few minutes walk left if she sped up and used the collapsing tunnelway.
Yes it was barely holding itself together, and yes she always ran through it for fear of being buried alive in rubble, but you couldn’t limit yourself during a heist like this (or, atleast, that’s what she liked to tell herself).
Therefore, she began to wheel it down the barely there path and past the edges of the border that separated them from the rest. The wheels began to sink into the mud, forcing her into moving with more haste. The lack of natural or artificial light didn’t help either, though that wasn’t much of an issue not after years of being adjusted to the dark. With hefty pushes and shoves, both she and the box made it through into the tunnel and she could finally let her chest loosen a little - no one would dare pursue her in here if they had even some sense of self preservation.
Finally, she thought as she rushed through the crumbling passageway, maybe I can get a decent meal out of this damn thing.

The Bear To Muzzle The Tiger
Tumblr media
The storm outside of Stillwater's walls raged with such ferocity, that it was as if Janna herself was aiming to punch a hole through the thick, heavy rock. Heavy claps of thunder robbed even prisoners, whose cells were in the very rock of the island of their sleep. The flashes of lightning made the geometrical, narrow shapes on the walls light up like ominous masks, which were watching the inmates, even when the guards were not present.
Pink lay on her hard concrete slab of a mattress and counted the seconds between the lightning and the thunder as she stared up at the ceiling. Her hands rested on her uneasy stomach, whose hunger pangs came in long, drawn-out waves. Sometimes, it was so bad that the magenta-haired inmate curled in on herself and squeezed her eye shut. She hated having to go to bed without dinner (not that prison food was anything to write home about, but at least, it made your stomach stop talking to you about how much it longed for a big and juicy steak). At least, she wasn't in the Hole, so there was that.
Her offence hadn't warranted the Hole, plain and simple. Pink had gotten into a, for her circumstances, relatively minor fight with another inmate. There had been no broken bones or torn flesh this time. Instead, all Pink had delivered, was a punch to the face, which resulted in a bloodied nose and a black eye. Even so, the guards had jumped at the chance to punish her for her behaviour and locked her back up in her cell without the evening meal.
One of them had even remarked how somebody would pay Pink a visit later that evening. After all, just having her hunger punish her wasn't enough for those ruffians in blue. No, they had to have their own fun by beating Pink up. Even so, the cowards always had to chain her up whenever they wanted to beat her up because Pink fought back; and she knew exactly where to hit to make things hurt. That was even if she did not choose to also make use of her claws and teeth.
Tumblr media
Pink growled at the two thick metal rings on the other side of the prison cell, which spawned the loud rattling chains, ending in cuffs for her wrists. The floor, surrounding the area, was streaked with splatters of red. Some old and already brownish in colour, others alarmingly fresh and still wet. The iron smell lay in her nose, and Pink hated how that scent alone made her mouth water. If it were possible and survivable, she would even eat parts of herself. Grunting, the inmate rolled on her side, not without giving the imprint of a person on the wall between the two rings the middle finger.
So what if they chose to send another guard her way to beat her to a pulp? Pink had done the same song and dance by now countless times. She could do it again, and she never changed her ways anyway. The space below her mattress was stuffed with trophies from fights with other inmates: From crude flip knives to shards from a plate, to a sock with nails. There had not been a weapon, which had not been wielded against Pink and which she had not been able to handle.
Heavy steps announced the arrival of whom Pink assumed was going to be the person, who would beat her up. The Stillwater inmate pushed herself upwards on her mattress and scooted backwards into the corner until her back touched the wall. If that rookie or even Chief assumed, she would just let herself be beat up, then they were wrong. They were going to have to drag her ass over to that cuff station. Her throat grew tight as Vi could already feel calloused hands grab her by the wrists and pull her to her feet. Hands against the back of her head, hands against her shoulder blades. Rough, calloused, leather wax, smelling so strongly in the air, it made her want to vomit.
Pink's green eyes rose to spot two figures standing in front of her cell door. One of them, she would always recognise: No matter how much Campion worked to keep his uniform clean and intact, his horrifically scarred face would always give the brown-haired Captain away. It was the figure next to him, which Vi had never seen before. They were huge and muscular in build, filling out their entire uniform to the point it threatened to tear at the seams. Snow-white, thick fur looked like pale grey or silver in the dim cell. Huge paws flexed to reveal short, yet sharp, black claws. His face resembled a flattened triangle with a broad snout and a big nose. His short, round ears were partially concealed by a cap.
Tumblr media
Pink furrowed her brows in disdain and mocked: "How bloody desperate are you, Campion, that you send in a bear to fix your mess for you? What? You've lost a few too many bets because I roughened up your rookies too much?" Campion's eyes narrowed at her words. Pink always knew how to get under his skin. She smirked an ugly grin, showing off her fangs in dark pride.
Pink turned towards the massive bear and aggressively leaned forward, snarling now with all her teeth exposed: "Go on, fluff ball! Come in here and give it your best shot! I wonder how many of your fingers, I can take before you run home baahing for your Mama!"

This week in the workshop we did some individual project idea creation, and were put into our pairs for the second assignment. Firstly, for my initial project idea, I took inspiration from the seedpods found in Barrambin/Victoria Park. Near the area where the seedpods were found, there was also a imprint of a riverbed. It was dried up and hidden at the bottom of a hill, but it was there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My idea for this project was to use the shape of the seedpods as bases for boats. I was to install them in the dried up riverbed, almost like a tribute to what had been. I'm sure that the former river was more of a stream, however I think it works as a tribute very well either way.
To make this, I first created a skeleton/armature. I traced the oval-ish shape of the seedpod, then had an arching line underneath to keep the curved shape. I used the flash welder (I think that's what it's called) to attach the skeleton together. I had thought to also add shorter arches along the underneath, just to keep the shape more rigid. However, with the time I had I didn't think that I could add those.
I wasn't sure what to use as the outside of the boat, but I thought it would be interesting to use wire. The wire I used reminded me of fishing nets, and I thought it would fit, given I was creating boats (albeit a mockery/representation).
Overall, the creation of this sculpture was a fun challenge, especially with creating the base skeleton underneath. I found it difficult to put into photoshop because of my use of the chicken wire, and in the end I ran out of time to put it in there. The chicken wire was the most difficult part, as it is very tedious to attach to the metal frame. That, and it was difficult to judge where I should cut the wire, so I ended up having too much in one spot. Therein, I had to do a bit of cutting and overlapping in order to make it work. One end ended up less curved than I would have wanted it, but I found that it looked alright either way.
Overall, I did like making the sculpture, however I probably won't go back to using chicken wire in a while. I liked how it ended up, but it was too tedious and I could have used a better material.
Tumblr media
I found this sculpture of a boat online. It's located in Lismore and was commissioned by the council to be installed in the Lismore CBD. The delicate-looking structure is mounted on a concrete platform, contrasting the delicate curves of the skeleton. The way it's constructed is through a central skeleton curving around the top perimeter and down the ends and bottom. Then the 'bones' of the structure curve from the bottom and up, forming the shape of a boat.
Despite the negative feedback from Lismore residents regarding it, I like the sculpture a lot. There's an air of arrogant elegance, as the boat sits on a platform above everything else, looking down. There is also an air of uselessness, as while it is a boat, it is a ghost of one. It isn't useful in any way because of it's skeletal nature.
It's mildly similar to mine in that we have similar ideas to keep the main structure of the boat see through. While not as present as my own work, there is a sense of 'what was there' left in the work, through the ghost of a boat.
Tumblr media
This sculpture is called The Boat in the Field, and is part of Dublin's Art in Public Places program. It's located in the M.L. "Red" Trabue Nature Reserve, standing at 25 feet tall and resembling the skeletal structure of a boat on stilts. It's made with steel, limestone and recycled granite. Ilan Averbuch, the artist who was commissioned for this piece, is well known and successful artist.
I like this work because of the contemporary elements in the composition. I love how the boat structure is held up by the steel beams, and the colours used work well with the environment it's installed in. In an article I found on this installation, it states that the structure is installed by a pond, which I found quite interesting. My initial thought was why hadn't they installed it in the pond? Then again, a pond isn't a very big body of water, so it makes sense. I thought that it would make for an even more interesting sculpture if it was installed in the pond. Because the structure is a boat, it would make an interesting contrast with the stilts and the natural environment. As it stands, the structure is beautiful as it is now.
In terms of relating to my own structure, I think Averbuch conveyed the skeletal nature much better than I did. With the materials and time I had, I did create something good, and that I'm happy with. However, I think I would have liked to create more of a literal skeleton in some similar nature to Averbuch's. Nevertheless, his sculpture and mine are similar in, of course, the skeletal nature. I like both works.

CHI / Ideas on Landscape
Tumblr media
Charlotte Bastion, Glocal Sceneries #3, 2021/22. 3 spatial images in 3 stereoscopes
Ideas on Landscape August 19–September 30, 2023  Opening Reception: Saturday, August 19, 1-4 PM Sound performance by Norman W. Long at 3 PM
Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago is proud to present the second iteration of its TSA network 5x5 exchange with SCOTTY Berlin. The first iteration occurred in March-April 2022.
Exhibiting Artists: Carl Baratta, Charlotte Bastian, Dan Devening, Kiki Gebauer, Simone Häckel, James Kao, Julia Krewani, Karen Linnenkohl, Norman W. Long, Christine Niehoff, Kushala Vora, Bettina Weiß, Scott Wolniak, Juliane Zelwies
“Landscape” is a term that encompasses the physical, ecological, and cultural characteristics of a particular geographic area or region. It refers to the visible features of an area of land, including natural elements such as mountains, rivers, valleys, and forests, as well as human-made elements such as buildings, roads, and agricultural fields. Landscapes are shaped by natural processes such as erosion, weathering, and deposition, as well as human interventions such as land use and management practices. Landscape is also a subjective concept that is influenced by the individual experiences, perceptions, and emotions of the people who interact with or imagine a particular terrain. A landscape can be viewed as a construct, an idea, a projection surface, a place of longing, a mirror that reflects our own desires, and/or a mood that we seek. A landscape is a complex tapestry of what may be ideal, heroic, sublime, frightening, and/or a testament to our exploitation of nature. “Ideas on Landscape” explores different artistic approaches to the theme of “landscape.” The exhibition is curated by the members of SCOTTY, an artist-run gallery from Berlin, and presents work by artists based in Berlin and Chicago.
Carl Baratta is constantly investigating different ways of compressing multiple moments into a single scene, a common conceit of miniature painting and Sienese imagery. His current work creates a  sense of repetition and rhyming to create the underlying scaffolding of a structure that hopefully makes some semblance of sense.
Charlotte Bastian: The "Glocal Series" is a series of photomontages presented as three-dimensional perceptible images in stereoscopes. The artworks discuss the actual and the reinterpreted, the invented, and the change of  landscapes through current and past events and through human intervention. The spatial observation opens up a level of perception that the flat image cannot create—a depth of space is created, a feeling of being in the space that one is nevertheless only looking at. The fact that even unnatural spaces are combined with the means of collage, that perspectives and proportions are assembled differently, reinforces this effect in an almost paradoxical way.
Dan Devening: The subject of these collages is formed by the structure and language of flags and banners—cultural, nationalistic and emblematic—and all the rhetoric that drives the symbolism and passion within. Dan Devening’s work finds its prime focus at the meeting point between object and viewer.  In his recent collages, there is a shifting tension between dynamic gestural atmospheres and flat, geometric shapes that act to cancel out or redact the energy behind. One is left wondering about the hidden and obscured. Kiki Gebauer works as a concrete artist. One focus of her reduced works is the thematization of color reflection. Used milk boxes, whose company imprints associate an intact nature, are used as an installation. The boxes cast a  coloured glow on the walls. An illusory world, so to speak, like the dreams about our nature.
Simone Haeckel‘s work deals with the perception of people, animals, and places. The artwork Untitled (Still Life) is a composition that embodies the concept of "landscape as an idea." It represents landscape not only as a physical space but one with emotional, cultural, and symbolic significance.
James Kao is an artist who makes still paintings and drawings that record his observations of the interaction between the built and unbuilt world. In the drawings on view, agriculture shapes the landscape in a strange and seemingly gentle way; the farmland fills the space between the village and the forest almost "naturally". In the drawn objects of Julia Krewani, textile surfaces are imitated. Crumpled, folded, rolled, or hanging, the paper sometimes resembles a plant or a landscape. Plaid blankets, striped clothes appear like randomly thrown landscapes. Laid in rhythmic waves, formed into canyons and piled up into hills, they flow through the space. Blue Stripes is a blue fabric webs that runs through the terrain like a river, a frozen movement in space.
Karen Linnenkohl´s work deals with reflections of the landscape in a river. In the rhythm of the current, the waves create a continuously ongoing movement and transformation of the image. Through the inversion, the merging, and the layering of different snapshots, a unique reality is generated.
Norman W. Long: On August 19, 2023 at 3:00 pm, Norman W. Long will perform a live mix composed of improvised electronics and field recordings of sounds that make up the character of the community, from local spaces such as Big Marsh, Marian R. Byrnes Park, and Jeffery Manor, as well as sonified data taken from plants on-site and data sets of soil, air, water, and demographics from the community area.
Christine Niehoff: In the destroyed world of the film Soylent Green (1972), the main character called Sol realizes he can no longer bear to live in this environment and decides to end his life in a euthanasia clinic. In Theater 2, he drinks his lethal poison to light classical music and nostalgic images of landscapes that no longer exist. Dioramas are used in natural history museums to depict various scenes of nature frozen in time and space.
Transferring elements of a film scene, in itself a fictional moment frozen in time, to a diorama, allows Niehoff to play with notions of the artificiality and idealization of landscape and the way we imagine and remember forms of nature.
Kushala Vora’s work Unearthed was made in response to a conscious effort to recognize the colonial influence on the ways she perceives and behaves. Made by petrifying notebooks, Unearthed investigates the learning of standardization. The sculptures are made out of terracotta mixed with gravel, fossilized notebooks, and porcelain. Upon making the terracotta bases, the notebook from a paper factory she visited was covered in slip and layered with more books. While firing, the pages of the book burned away leaving behind a shell, a skin. The body—her body—became central to the holding of these layers of habits and conditionings.
Bettina Weiß: The "Portraits of a Secret Landscape" series deals with nature and landscape in an abstract way. Each painting tells of a possible certain state of the inner geometry of the world, which manifests itself in all processes in the micro- and macrocosm. Represented by basic geometric shapes that Weiß paints in ever new variations, possibilities, and connections. The eye is confronted with a moving image, which begins to vibrate through color contrasts and the contrast of glaze and pasty application of the image, thereby going into communication with the viewer. The world in which we live is fragile— Weiß tries to make the immediate contact with universal laws of nature visible through the medium of painting.
For this series, Bettina Weiß chose the classic portrait format, in order to give viewers the opportunity to “walk“ in the painting, like an entrance, like a portal.
The two pieces Scott Wolniak is showing were made 20 years apart and sit at very different points in the arc of his practice. Where 11/02/00 (2000) is a video about painting, Resting Place (2020) is an actual painting. Where the video is loud and jittery, the painting is quiet and still. The single channel video, 11/02/00, made on the date of the title, is a comedic performance video depicting the artist painting "en plein-air" in the back of a moving pickup truck as it speeds through neighborhoods and industrial areas on the west side of Chicago,- interacting with potholes, traffic, passersby, a dog, and the police. The turbulence of the truck (bouncing, turning, starting and stopping) creates a slapstick physical comedy routine as the artist struggles to focus on the small canvas.  The resulting painting is abstract and messy, occasionally depicting fleeting imagery, but primarily registering gestural marks that are generated as much by the external forces of the situation as by the artist's hand. Intimate in scale and subtle in form, Resting Place is an exploratory abstract painting that encourages slow viewing. Utilizing paper pulp and pumice medium for texture, and luminosity built through layers of transparent pigment, Resting Place is a dreamy abstraction evocative of immersion in a misty landscape.
Juliane Zelwies: Between the young forest and the hill (mellom Ungskogneset og Einåsen) is a plot of land located on a small island in northern Norway. It is home to many songbirds, both sedentary birds such as the great tit and migratory birds such as the European pied flycatcher who comes from Sub-Saharan Africa to northern Scandinavia each summer. While we humans perceive the habitat as a peaceful idyll, its soundscape is in fact the result of an elaborate and not necessarily peaceful communication between different birds. Anatomical drawings have a long tradition in natural sciences as a way to understand the world, for example, by comparing one species with another. Research has shown that some bird species such as crows, ravens and parrots are as intelligent as primates. Birdbrain is an anatomical drawing of a bird’s brain.

Types of Decorative Concrete
Tumblr media
Concrete is a common construction material that can be used in a number of ways. It is often known for its strength and durability, but it can also be decorative.
A variety of techniques can be used to decorate concrete, including acid stains, acrylic stains, concrete dyes and integral colors (color mixed into the concrete before it is poured). Other methods include scoring, etching, chiseling, and polishing.
Pattern Imprinted Concrete
Often called ‘stamp’ or ‘textured concrete’, pattern imprinted concrete is a modern attractive paving method for patios, paths and driveways. It uses a range of pattern mats that imitate different types of stone, slate and cobble. This, combined with a choice of dyes, can give the impression of block, natural stone and flagstone paved surfaces.
Unlike tarmac which looks quite industrial and offers very little in terms of design, an imprinted concrete patio, path or driveway can create a more bespoke look to your property. Moreover, it doesn’t crack as easily in hot and cold weather.
Once the concrete is set it is then colour and printed with a variety of different designs. It’s very important that the colour is laid consistently to avoid a patchy finish. This is especially true if the job requires several concrete deliveries and a colour surface hardener. Once the concrete is cured it’s then sealed with a high-quality sealer that protects against stains, spillages and UV light fading.
Ashlar Stone
Ashlar is a type of finely dressed stone masonry. It can refer to either a single stone that has been worked until it is squared or masonry built from such stones. It may be coursed or stacked, creating continuous vertical joints, or random with discontinuous horizontal and vertical joints.
It is most commonly used in paving and walling projects. It can be finished in a variety of ways, including dry ashlar where all sides are precision-cut with a rough surface. This style was used in the ancient palaces of Knossos and Phaistos.
Another finish for ashlar is quarry faced. In this style, the visible faces of the stones are left natural, displaying their rock-faced texture. The beds and sides of the stones are carefully chiseled to create thin joints. This finish is a great option for areas that need a little extra grip. It is also possible to add exposed aggregate in this pattern. This gives the concrete a more rustic and natural look.
Herringbone
Herringbone is a distinctive weave pattern, sometimes known as “broken twill.” It’s similar to chevron, but differs in that herringbone uses rectangles that are straight across the width of the fabric, while chevron’s corners use angles that are less than ninety degrees.
Herringbone patterns can be seen in a variety of textiles, including tweed cloth. It’s also a common design element in flooring and parquetry, where rows of wood are staggered to create a zigzag pattern.
This elegant and versatile pattern is popping up in flooring, kitchen backsplashes, and other surfaces that can bring interest and energy to a room. When used on a large scale, herringbone can be bold and striking. However, on a smaller scale herringbone can look very subtle and read as solid from a distance. It’s a timeless, classic design option that can be incorporated into any design style. It’s an ideal choice for a kitchen backsplash, but can also accentuate the lines of mid-century modern furniture or complement reclaimed barn wood to create a rustic-chic dining table.
Cobblestone
Cobblestones are beautiful, and they instantly conjure images of winding lanes in misty villages. However, they’re tricky to walk on and a common cause of twisted ankles. They were also one of the first paving materials to be used in streets. Cobblestones are rounded stones, larger than pebbles and smaller than boulders, that were gathered from stream beds and mortared in place. Eventually cobblestones were replaced by quarried granite setts (also known as Belgian blocks), which are more uniform in size and can be installed without mortar.
In addition to being used in roads, reclaimed cobblestones are frequently found in historic buildings, including homes, stores, restaurants, stagecoach taverns and factories. The tumbling action of glaciers during the last Ice Age made abundant supplies of these small, rounded stones available in places like the Finger Lakes region of New York. These cobblestones were used to build many of the towns, villages and cities in this region of the US prior to the Civil War.

Learn More about Stamped Concrete Colour Techniques
Tumblr media
For patios, car porches, driveways, pool decks, interior flooring, and pathways, stamped concrete is a really clever and innovative concrete innovation. The concept of using stamped concrete to embellish concrete floors gives the flooring a good look in addition to adding strength. Textured concrete & imprinted concrete are the other names for stamped concrete.
Cast the Color Technique: Here, a base colour is applied to the prepared concrete's surface. On the surface of the concrete is placed the colour hardener. This procedure is done when the concrete is wet.
Then it is given space for the electricity to float on top of. Numerous techniques can be used to colour concrete. Some colouring techniques include the use of colour hardeners, acid stains, and integrated liquid or powder.
Increase in Base Colors: When making stamped concrete flooring, the base colour is the main colour used. The base colour was selected to go well with the building's natural tint. Any additional stones that have been positioned close to the building must complement this one.
By including a colour hardener, the basic colour of the stamped concrete is determined. The colour hardener is a material that resembles powder for the base colour. There are two techniques to incorporate a colour hardener into the concrete.

What Are The Modern Block Paving Driveway Ideas?
Tumblr media
Block paving is a popular choice for many homeowners looking to create a new driveway.
The versatile nature of the product means that there are a wide range of different designs and patterns to choose from.
If you are considering installing a new driveway, there are a few things to consider first. You will need to think about what you want it to look like, and what materials are best for your home.
Block paving is a great option for creating an all-weather entrance. It is durable and can withstand harsh weather. With proper care, it will also look clean. On average, a block paved driveway can last for about 20 years. This type of driveway has the potential to add a lot of value to your home.
When choosing a material, you will need to weigh the costs of the different materials. Depending on your budget, you may opt to have a tarmac or gravel driveway. However, these materials are limited in colour, and will only be suitable for some homes. Instead, you can choose a patterned driveway, which will make your house stand out.
Cobblestones
Using cobblestones is another way to add interest to your driveway. These stones are a popular option because they are hard-wearing and can be found in a variety of colours. They also go well with various house designs.
Pattern imprinted concrete is another popular alternative. This driveway material is very easy to install, and can be poured to any shape or size. You can also add plant pots and ball topiary plants for a finishing touch. In addition, this paving material requires minimal maintenance.
Herringbone
One of the most common driveway patterns is the herringbone pattern. The herringbone design arranges bricks in a 45-degree angle, giving it a unique aesthetic. However, this design can be time-consuming to install. Another popular design is the stretcher-bond pattern, which is a more intricate overlapping design.
Other options include the angled stack bond paving, which mimics the classic herringbone textile design. This is an excellent option for those who want to achieve a modern, minimalist feel.
Another way to create a more complex look is to use a circular paving pattern. This is a classic design, which works especially well on older properties. For this type of driveway, two colours can be used, and a contrasting border can be used to match the sides.
You can also add a seperate area for greenery. Adding a potted plant, shrubbery, or tree will provide you with symmetry, and can help turn an ordinary design into a contemporary one.

Patterned Concrete Vs Block Paving
Tumblr media
Block paving can be an expensive option. Luckily, there are alternatives to this dated style that offer more attractive, affordable results.
Among these alternatives is patterned concrete, which offers endless creative opportunities. This type of concrete is poured in large sections, which helps prevent unwanted crack growth. In addition, cracks created by patterned concrete are actually printed indentations rather than real cracks.
Patterned concrete is a cost-effective alternative to block paving
Patterned concrete, also known as stamped concrete, is a technique in which a colour is imprinted on the concrete before it hardens. The patterning process differs from conventional concreting, which involves using blocks to develop the surface. When the concrete is still wet, the colour is applied to the concrete in a range of different patterns. Common patterns include brickwork, ashlar stone and textured stone. Patterned concrete is a popular choice for driveways and pathways.
Patterned concrete requires a special colour surface hardener, usually 2.5kg per square metre. This is particularly important for high traffic areas, such as driveways. Concrete with a lower cement content can't be properly hardened, which could result in a poor finish.
It requires less maintenance than traditional concrete
Block paving is an excellent choice for driveways and other exterior areas. It is highly durable, and requires far less maintenance than traditional concrete. It is available in a variety of thicknesses. The most common thickness is 50mm, while the thickest units are around 100mm. The thickest blocks are used for heavy-duty paving, whereas the thinnest ones are suitable for domestic use.
Brick paving is a good option for driveways and walkways. It looks great on drives and patios, and can be combined with other types of paving. It is also an excellent alternative to tarmacadam for estate roads. Brick paving is also an attractive alternative to estate roads. Its high-density structure allows it to withstand exceptional loads and still look good.
It lasts longer than concrete
If you want to lay a driveway that lasts longer than concrete, consider block paving. This type of paving is made of recycled materials, and it is also environmentally friendly. It is porous, which means that it can absorb dirt. However, with proper maintenance, block paving will last for years. You should spray it with a sealer every couple of years to keep it looking its best.
Block paving is often used for driveways, pavements, patios, walkways, and road surfacing. Block paving is a good choice for areas where you expect light traffic, and you can easily replace individual blocks if they get worn out. However, this type of paving does cost more than concrete.
It is easier to repair
It is a durable surface and can last for a decade or longer. This type of pavement is ideal for commercial and residential properties because it is low-maintenance and can withstand heavy traffic. It is also perfect for airports and docks, where high traffic volume can be a problem. This type of paving is also low-cost because it doesn't need a top layer of polish and will not need to be repainted or repaired in the future.
