The immense castle of Pangea was silent at night, its endless corridors bathed by the pale light of the moon. In the heart of the structure, inside a luxuriously decorated chamber, I was sitting next to Imu, the hidden ruler of the world.
His eyes, deep and unattainable, watched me from the darkness under the thorny crown he always wore. Despite the cold silence that usually surrounded him, at that moment, his voice cut the air with unusual softness.
- My butterfly, you seem distant tonight.
The title made me smile slightly. It was a nickname that he rarely used, reserved for moments of intimacy, when his absolute authority was undone, even if for a few moments.
- Just thinking, my lord - I replied, turning to face him.
He approached, the long mantles sliding on the floor, enveloping us in a dense shadow. His gloved hand landed on my face, cold as the marble of the throne he occupied.
- Tell me what disturbs your mind.
There were many questions I could ask. About the Lost Century, about the truth of the world, about the weight it carried. But, at that moment, only one mattered.
- Do you feel afraid, Imu?
A loaded silence filled the space between us before he let out a slight sigh.
- Fear is for those who don't control their destiny.
His words were firm, but his gazeโ€”for a brief momentโ€”seemed to hesitate. As if, perhaps, even the hidden king of the world could fear something that not even he could control.
And I asked myself: was I a butterfly that he admired... or one that he feared letting out?

-Moments with him-

Forbidden Garden.
The secret garden inside Pangea was a place that few knew. Black roses bloomed under the cold light of the moon, and the air had a slightly sweet, almost hypnotic scent. I was there, sitting on a marble bench, feeling the icy wind touch my skin, when I heard silent steps behind me.
- You always come here when you want to run away from something.
Imu's voice was soft, but carried an inescapable weight. He sat next to me, the long mantle flowing like shadows around us.
- Maybe I just like the tranquility. - I replied, looking at him.
- So I'm the one who disturbs this peace?
His red eyes reflected the moon, and for a moment, I saw in them something that no one would ever seeโ€”vulnerability. As if, for a second, the absolute ruler of the world wanted to be just a presence by my side, and not a hidden king.
โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”
The Kiss in the Darkness.
The flames of the candles oscillated in the secret chamber, casting shadows on the stone walls. We were close, much more than we should be.
- The whole world can bend to me, but you... you never bow, do you? - His voice was low, almost a whisper.
- I belong to myself, Imu. - My answer was firm, and an almost imperceptible smile appeared on his lips.
There was something between us that could never be appointed. Something more dangerous than any secret of the World Government. His face leaned, his cold hand touched my warm skin, and then his lips met mineโ€”a silent kiss, stolen from the darkness.
It was a mistake. But none of us moved away.
โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”
On The Empty Throne.
He was sitting on the throne that, for the world, should always be unoccupied. The Five Ancients had left, and I was the only one to stay.
- Come. - He reached out to me.
I hesitated. That place was a symbol of absolute power, something that no one but him should touch. But, still, I approached, feeling his penetrating gaze.
When my hands met his, he squeezed them tightlyโ€”as if keeping me there was the only real thing in the midst of all the illusion he had built.
- If the world knew that I share this throne with you...
- What would happen? - I asked, defiant.
He just smiled sideways, bringing me closer.
- So maybe the world needs a new order.
โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”
Dance in the Shadows.
The large black marble room was silent, lit only by trembling candles. The cold wind whispered through the corridors of Pangea's castle, but there, in the center of darkness, there were only the two of us.
- Have you ever danced before, my butterfly? - Imu asked, extending his hand to me.
- I've never had someone to guide my steps.
He smiled slightly, a rare gesture. His cold fingers held my hand, gently pulling me close. No music, no witnesses, just the sound of the fabric of our clothes rubbing while he led me. His movements were elegant, precise, as if even in something as simple as a dance, he needed to have absolute control.
But when I looked at him, I saw something different in his eyesโ€”a spark of desire, maybe a moment of weakness.
- Maybe it's you who's guiding me tonight.
And in that silent dance, in the heart of absolute power, the hidden king of the world seemed, for an instant, just a man.
โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”
The Hidden Side of Imu.
The storm roared outside, thunder echoing through the castle. I was in his rooms, a place that no one ever dared to enter. The room was big, but strangely empty. No extravagant decoration, no symbol of power. Just shadows and secrets.
He was standing, with his back to me, watching the rain hit the glass.
- Sometimes, I wonder what it would be like if all this disappeared. If I wasn't Imu, if the world didn't belong to me.
The confession was unexpected.
- And who would you be?
He turned slowly, his red eyes shining in the gloom.
- Someone who could love you without having to hide.
There was a heavy silence between us. I knew what that moment meant, the risk of hearing such words from someone like him.
- You already love me, Imu. You just can't admit it.
His lips curled into a half-dark smile, before he approached.
- And you like the danger it brings.
โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”
The Last Secret.
The sun was setting, dyeing the skies red over Mary Geoise. I was next to him, at the top of the fortress, watching the world below us.
- If I fell, what would you do? - Imu asked, without looking away from the landscape.
The question was strange. A supreme king should not fear the fall.
- I would fall with you.
He turned to me, his expression finally showing something that no one would ever see: doubt.
- Would you abandon everything for me?
I approached, touching his cold face.
- Don't you notice? I'm already stuck with you. There is no turning back.
He sighed, holding my hand.
- So, my butterfly, I hope you never regret flying so close to the flame.
And there, between the light of sunset and the shadows of her empire, I knew that I was condemned to him.

did anyone ask for a self-indulgent Imu x Reader piece?ย  No?ย  Well, too bad,ย โ€˜cause thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m providing today.
scenario: youโ€™re the newest servant at Mariejoa, and, just a few weeks ago, shortly into your new job, you come across a mysterious figure in the garden.ย  Now they give you an offer.
warnings/tags: power imbalance, nonbinary S/O (they/them pronouns), gender neutral reader, SFW.
requests are CLOSED, but I am still taking asks!ย Come talk to me about anything youโ€™d like!
Tumblr media
They promise you the world.ย  It's a bit too grand for your tastes, and promises have, you've regrettably come to find out, little meaning in the eternity of the skies - but you won't say no.ย  You can't say no.ย ย
Their hand, so delicate and slender, untouched by the world, is inviting you in.ย  Take it, your descendants say.ย  Run away, says your ancestors.
Kiss it, says the God.ย  For that it is what they are.ย  Once, they may have been a man, but now they are beyond such trivial terms.ย  King, Queen, God, Goddess - they are simply the ocean itself.
You listen to God, for it is all you know now.ย  Their hand smells of lavender, tastes of peppermint.ย  It takes all your effort not to taste their lips at that moment, to dare defy the ocean and sun and all that comes in-between, but they smile at you and you feel your heart catch in your throat.
"It is the future that is promised to us," they whisper.ย  It echoes in the garden.ย  The plants sing their words back to you, a butterfly lands on their shoulder. "It is the past we must eradicate."
Every part of you is screaming run away.ย  And your body is right - you should run away.ย  Forget you ever came here, forget what you saw, apply for another job outside Mariejoa.ย  The honour of working in Pangea as a servant was nothing, nothing compared to the fear of this being.ย ย
So why do you love them so much?
You let out a shaking breath. "I'm sorry, my liege.ย  I cannot hold a crown, no matter how insignificant."
Their eyes widen for a moment, before narrowing down to slits.ย  You flinch, wondering if you've said the wrong thing. ย  You absolutely have, but their words are dangerous, and you are not destined to be a ruler.ย  It was a miracle in itself that you were able to come here at all.
It was fate, miracle and karma that led you to this very garden, before this very being, all those weeks ago.
You feel their fingertips brush over your lips, reaching past your cheeks before hovering down to your collarbone.ย  It takes all of your energy not to shudder, and even more not to shiver in excitement.
"Don't," they begin, their voice octaves lower than it usually is, "be so arrogant,' they bend down, grasping your face in their hands, "to think that you are worthy of being a monarch."
Your body is pulled towards them, from yourย  head, and you're too frightened to even make a sound.
"I promised you the world.ย  I said nothing of the crown, little rabbit."
The crown.ย  The accursed thing that weighed so heavily on their head.ย  Your gaze flickers to it, and don't think they don't notice that.ย  Their lips curl into a sneer.ย  How could one so beautiful make a face so ugly - but yet their ethereal qualities remain, despite their expression, and you're reminded of marble statues.ย  The ones that are carved in honour of deities and Gods and the heroes of the past.ย  You wonder if they were a hero, once.
It wouldn't surprise you if theirs was a tragedy.
"Do you understand?" they ask.
You nod, for what else can you do?ย
A hint of a smile graces their lips, and they let you go.ย  You lose your balance, for a brief moment, but they're there to catch you before you fall.ย  Such a gentle soul, one that holds your hand and body so warmly (despite the fact that they were as cold as ice) that you forget what had just transpired for a brief moment.ย  Just a moment.
"But I am not a monster," they say. "I will give you a choice: stay with me, and be privy to the wonders of heaven, or go, and see the skies from the ground you mortals call home.ย  Look upon my clouds, in a world where the people live in harmony, or be my cloud."
My cloud.ย  They've already decided they own the clouds.ย  And now they're giving you an ultimatum: belong to them, or look at Mariejoa from afar.ย  You know what to say, of course.
"I'll stay here."
The words fall from your lips, your tongue feeling heavy in your mouth.ย  As if you hadn't meant to say it.ย  But you did - you decided on that answer.ย  You did not think of your home, nor your friends waiting for you in the oceans.ย  But you did think of them, how exhilarating their touch was when their fingertips brushed over your skin, how every heartbeat you heard pound against your own rib cage was a soft melody to them.ย ย
You take on a more defiant look - because, damn it, you are not a docile little servant - and stare at them.
"But the instant you treat me as anything less than fantastic, I'm leaving you," you say.ย  There.ย  You've got enough self-respect to say that, at least.
One of their brows rises up. "I wasn't going to give you a throne.ย  I said nothing about not treating you as such."
You tilt your head. "Does that mean you'll treat me right?"
"Oh, my rabbit," they laugh, and it sounds like they haven't done so in decades, "when have I ever treated my possessions wrong?"
You think to the wars and slavery and revolutions and corruption and hell that is happening to the world below.
You think it wise not to comment.ย ย
โ€œWhen did I ever say I was your possession?โ€ you bite back.ย  This being in front of you may be a king, may be a God, but you have enough autonomy left to know what you are.ย  If they werenโ€™t going to make you a damn Goddess, then youโ€™d expect at least some decency from them. โ€œIf you want me, if you love me like you claim you do, then you will treat me as an equal.โ€
Their hand twitches at the word love - theyโ€™d never said the word before, not to you, and certainly not to themselves.ย  A moment passes, and you wonder if youโ€™ve committed blasphemy.ย  Then another moment passes, and another, and they kneel down on one knee.ย  They bring your hand closer to their lips and, mirroring what you had done earlier, plants a kiss on the back of it.
You widen your eyes.ย
โ€œLittle rabbit,โ€ they murmur, red eyes piercing through your body, โ€œif you want to be worshipped, you have to earn it.ย  If you want my respect, you must learn how to keep yourself from drowning.โ€
They told you, when you first met, when you first asked them for their name, that they were the Ocean.ย  You think they might be as ancient.
โ€œHave you ever worshipped anyone before?โ€ you ask.
A pause.ย  Something crosses over their eyes - grief. โ€œOnce.โ€
โ€œDo you think you could worship again?โ€
Their gaze trails up your arm and to your own.ย  They tug on your hand, lightly, gently, but enough for you to know that they want you to kneel before them, as they kneel before you.ย  You do so, curious.ย  They lean forward to your ear, so close you can feel their breath - cold as ice - on your skin.ย  Goosebumps pop up on your arms, and the hairs in the back of your neck stand up.
โ€œNo one has earned that respect from me,โ€ they whisper. โ€œIโ€™ve had many whoโ€™ve tried.โ€
โ€œAnd what could one do to earn your respect?โ€
They think on the question for a long while, their expression stern.ย  Finally they look up, and, with conviction, say, โ€œnothing.โ€
What an odd God, you think.ย
Still.ย  Youโ€™ve always been one for a challenge.
A smirk spreads across your face. โ€œYouโ€™re on.โ€

-Nefertari D. Lili.-
.
.
.
.
What He Never Found in Nefertari D. Lili.
The dim light of the candles shattered in the dark hall. I was sitting in front of him, the man who controlled the world, the one who never showed emotions. But that night, there was something different in his eyes.
- Do you know why I could never forgive Nefertari D. Lili?
The question broke the heavy silence between us. I knew the storyโ€”she was the only one among the twenty founders of the World Government who refused to remain in Mary Geoise. The only one who betrayed the pact, who disappeared, taking with her a secret that he never managed to recover.
- Why did she challenge you?
He let out a low, almost bitter laugh.
- Because she abandoned me.
My eyes widened slightly. He had never spoken that way about the queen of the past. Everyone believed that he hated her only for her betrayal. But now, looking at him, I saw something deeper.
- Did you... love Lili?
He stared at me for a long moment before answering.
- I believed so.
His gloved hand slid over the table until it reached mine. His touch was always cold, but there, at that moment, there was an unusual hesitation.
- But what I felt for her was never like what I feel for you.
My heart tightened.
- And what's the difference?
He leaned over, his voice low, almost a whisper against my skin.
- She tried to run away from me. You... always come back.
There was a heavy silence before he continued.
- Lili was a bird that wanted to fly free. You are a butterfly that chose to land on my hand.
And for the first time, Imu didn't speak like a king. He spoke like a man who had spent centuries waiting for something he never found in Nefertari D. Lili... but who found in me.
โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”
The Ghost of Nefertari D. Lili.
The night was silent in the great library of Pangea. The shelves held centuries of history, but there was a book in front of me that seemed untouchableโ€”a forbidden record.
I felt your presence even before he spoke.
- Reading about her?
Imu walked slowly to me, his mantle brushing the marble floor. I didn't need to answer. He already knew.
- You hid her story from everyone. But not from me.
He was silent for a moment, watching the open book on the table. The records of Nefertari D. Lili were scarce, fragmented... but the pain he carried when talking about her was real.
- She promised to stay.
My breathing failed. I had never heard him say that.
- But she left.
Imu closed his eyes for a moment, and when he opened them, his expression was gloomy.
- She betrayed me in the worst way. It wasn't just a rebellion. It wasn't just the refusal to reign by my side. She chose to leave everything behind, knowing that I would never accept this.
- Was she afraid of you?
He looked at me for a long moment before answering.
- She was afraid of getting lost in me.
I was silent.
Then, his hand touched my face, a cold gesture, but full of meaning.
- But you're already lost.
He leaned over, and for a moment, I felt that I could be devoured by that darkness.
- And doesn't want to be saved.
โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”
Nefertari Chose To Leave... I Chose To Stay.
Mary Geoise was immersed in the morning fog. From the top of the balcony, we could see the world below, an empire built on secrets and lies.
Imu was next to me, watching the horizon.
- If you were her, would you have run away too?
The question took me by surprise. He had never compared the two of us so directly.
- I don't know. But I know that if I decided to leave... you wouldn't leave me.
His red eyes shone in the tim light.
- You're right.
He turned to me, his expression serious, intense.
- I gave Lili the chance to stay. I begged her to choose this throne next to me. But she refused him. She refused me.
He held my chin gently, but his voice was loaded with absolute certainty.
- You didn't do that. You didn't deny me. And that's why, as long as I exist, you'll never leave this place.
My heart beat hard.
- Would you arrest me here?
He smiled from the corner, but there was no humor in his eyes.
- I've already arrested. Not with chains. But with something much more powerful.
My breath was stuck when he leaned over to whisper against my lips:
- I arrested you with the desire to stay.
And, at that moment, I realized that he was right.
