Neutral, with just a tad bit of nerves.

Look. Claude has bigger fish to fry than what you’re gallivanting on about during the day. The man has a dream to catch with literally a country and 1/3 (woot woot alliance) on his shoulders.

First, the future. Then, you. Can’t have a life together if there is no place for it to be had, yeah?

This doesn’t mean that he never worries about you. Quite the contrary, if he begins then he can’t stop. So he doesn’t tinker the thought.

Instead he has his most trusted allies at your back. During the Academy days you were left under Hilda’s watchful eye, and during the war you are always nearby (courtesy of matchmaker Prof.Byleth)

Once he puts a ring on it you’ll have guards. No problem.

He also trusts your own capabilities. One doesn’t train every day to walk out with nothing

You make me laugh if you think Claude believes you’ll ever cheat on him

However, Claude is very sensitive to illness for obvious reasons. This is why he’s listed at a six. He always insists on tasting your food

It was a gimmick at first, and in the beginning he’d make banter to sneak a bite while you remain all unknowing of his true intentions

He’ll be damned if someone ever poisons you. They won’t ever get the chance

Ignatz:

Let us face it. Iggy is a worry-wart.

He freaks out over the most minuscule of situations. The poor lad nearly gets a heart attack at least once a day

And no, i’m not just referring to his pre-timeskip self. Ignatz may have grown a head taller, got a backbone, fancy harem artist pants--but no, he did not lose his inner anxious zealot. That trait will cling until the day he dies sadly

Having you at his side only makes things worse (in a good way. The trouble is worth it to him)

Especially if you’re more of the risky sort. Expect him to mother hen if you cause ruckus around the monastery. He can and will lecture you to death (only to apologize and hide away after)

Now not only does he worry about his own issues, but also yours. I swear Ignatz acts like you are his second being. If someone scolds you, hurts you, etc. he acts like they did it to him

Can be a bit dramatic, not gonna lie. He gets so worked up that his ears go red. Like, you can just t e l l he’s holding so much back because he doesn’t want to go too far

Don’t even get me started on if someone tries to make a move on you

He becomes t o r n. It isn’t his place to tell you who to hang around, but ohmygodwhatifyourealizeheisn’tgoodenough

iggy no, bad iggy. don’t think like that

He feels threatened so easily and not many would peg him the jealous type. He is, but hides it very well.

If need be he will talk out his feelings with you. That’s something noteworthy of Ignatz: he uses his words. He may find communicating such thoughts aloud difficult, but if he truly is concerned then he will be honest with you.

Raphael:

10/10

Raphael believes in trust. He expects you to be honest and to not keep anything important secret. In return he’ll do the same.

This is why he doesn’t care if someone is flirting. He could give less of a thought on gossip, rumors, or anything really. That effort can go towards training

He truly, honest to Sothis, trusts you with all his heart. There isn’t any time to spend doing otherwise. Raph just wants to live happily and that means having you by his side

Nor does he feel intimidated by anyone else either. I’m not saying that he reeks of resolved confidence, but Raph believes that you love him. Love topples any mindless flirting that other people throw your way

but let’s get one thing straight

If anybody, and I mean ANYBODY, tries to hurt you

This guy’s having them for b r e a k f a s t. Pounded, sliced, and Smoked. The same way he liked his bacon.

You are his family. Raphael protects his family, and those he cares about.

You will never be alone. Goddess if you cry and someone else is the cause then he will take action. One fault of Raph is that while he’s a sweetie, he doesn’t think before acting a lot. Similar to Caspar, he just goes for it

It takes a lot to get underneath Raph’s skin.

In short: do not f*ck with his loved ones. He would take on Nemisis himself mono-e-mono if it meant protecting them

Lorenz:

Y’all going to sit there and try to convince me that Lorenz Hellman Gloucester doesn’t try to establish dominance?

He’s quickly shut down

“Lorenz if you tell one more person that we’re betrothed, I swear that I’ll shave off your eyebrows” - You, one month post-confession

Saying that you’re his perfect match is no excuse. Considering all the preaching he does on noble humility, you’d think he would want your private affairs off the notice board?

It doesn’t take long for your peers to start complaining. Claude finds his behavior entertaining, but not a day goes by that someone doesn’t beg you to make him shut up

Lorenz is also a bit old fashioned. He doesn’t like the idea of you fighting more than necessary

Once again, shut down

Best way to deal with Lorenz is to let him think he has his way, then just do whatever. He gets upset, pouts, spouts his normal lecture, but then relents. All in due process with him

Never thought I’d say this, but perhaps requesting not to be in the same troop together is the best option? You’d think he would fight better with an S tier relationship at his side? Nahhh. HE TAKES YOUR KILLS IT IS NOT FAIR

He gives too much attention to what you’re doing, and not the enemy. Best if you stay separated

Ugh pray no one hits on you in front of him. Just... *screams* I don’t think anyone will, just to avoid him getting defensive. I swear the other deer take extensive preventative measures to avoid it.

Hilda:

C’mon. This is Hilda we’re talking about

You two most likely grew closer because she “asks” you for help so often

Just like Claude, she has bigger fish to fry. The last type of person she wants to be is Holst (she loves him though don’t misinterpret that)

She does worry though

Not enough to make her take the front lines, but a smidgen. Just to where you’ll get periodic check in’s

Nothing obvious. A simple “what’s going on?” as she inquired about your well-being

A precarious scan-over as she checks for any new scars

She does get jealous though. There’s an entire castle full of available people and someone chooses to flirt with you?

That just doesn’t make sense. Perhaps the “once something is taken it becomes more desirable,” saying has some truth

She’s quite the clinger. You’ll just be walking and suddenly, BOOM, bubble-gum pink arm-candy in the corner of your vision

Once you two bypass the ‘puppy-love’ early stages, she changes.

Despite her negligence beforehand, she does become overprotective

Will fight if needed. Say you have a paralogue? Just so happens she was nearby and wants to tag along

She also has to protect you from Holst. My dear, you cannot do that yourself. Brotherly wrath beseeches you, my god. Run dude run

Marianne:

A possessive streak is nonexistent in her blood. Such thing is a personal fear of her’s. Marianne refuses to conform to the stereotypes associated with her crest

However, she does believe that one day you may leave her side. Marianne isn’t the most confident person. She...doubts

Often does she wonder if you’re there solely to make her hurt. To love her and then one day disappear without a trace

Anxieties like so will not go away overnight. She will not seek reassurance, which makes her more uncommunicative than most partners

but no one is perfect. Neither are you. All you personally can do is politely decline any advances, and do your best to let Marianne know that you love her

She isn’t particularly protective in any other sense either. She’ll heal you if needed, but special attention isn’t there

Marianne treats being a healer like how an ER doctor operates. On the field, everyone is equal. She is needed everywhere and cannot stay by your side. Otherwise lives will be lost, and that won’t be good for her conscience.

The same goes for all other aspects. If you’re gone, then you’re gone. If you’re sick, then you’re sick. She cannot give you special attention and acts in accordance to severity of the situation. Patients cannot be weighed in value via personal bias

She has a surprisingly strong sense of self control, let me tell ya.

Lysithea:

7/10

She...does not have much time. Entering a romantic relationship was not a possibility that crossed her mind once before you

Why bother when the ending is certain? Why leave someone brokenhearted, or a widow? Why give herself that extra stress when she’s already under so much as it is?

You can’t blame her for being extra cautious. While her life may be hanging on a string, that doesn’t mean yours has to end

After some time she develops a resolve. If needed she would gladly lay her life down if it meant you could live another day

A problematic conclusion. You two will argue often over how she cannot trade a ‘life for a life,’ just because of her special circumstances. Her mind always enforces that it’s the logical decision, and has trouble recognizing her own value

I suppose that comes with being a know-it-all, huh? Once her mind is set then there is no changing it

Despite her brain sending all the signals that acting on jealousy is wrong...well, we know Lysithea

She won’t come out and say she gets protective for your sake. Apparently anyone flirting with you already had business with her

Business that miraculously unfolds once you leave. Then suddenly they no longer have an interest?

What’d she do? Threaten to shove a thoron up their rectum? No one knows

Leonie:

She is the mom who’d create a strict morning routine for her kids to follow before school

Or a thorough itinerary on a vacation

Not a moment or bullion to be wasted!

Cannot express enough how much this girl cares. She can become annoying from all the interference, but you’ll never become a bum with her in your life

You might want to ask her to butt out. Remind her that you’re not one of the kids from her village, and that you can handle yourself

Sometimes you’ll joke and say “yes mom,” because she gets b o s s y

Which will earn you either: a) a glare, or b) her playing along and confusing everyone else

So in a sense, yeah she’s protective. Overbearing in her own Leonie way

Not the jealous type. Leonie doesn’t look at what other people have, and instead focuses on her own life. If someone wants to shamelessly throw themselves at your feet then that’s their issue. You know better than to cheat on her

I can see her complaining to the captain or to Byleth though. Why waste time when the issue can easily be solved? Obviously someone with the time to flirt has time to do training drills

Bonus! Cyril: (because during my first play-through I kept expecting GD to take him under their wing. They did not, and Nintendo missed out.)

He personally hates being treated like a child. When someone doesn’t take him seriously Cyril’s self restraint goes b o o m

So he won’t do that to you. You’re a capable individual and that’s that. Nothing more for him to interfere with

His only protective streak lies when you’re incapable of doing things yourself. Aka: injured, ill, resting, etc.

He’ll nag you for not being careful, but it’s not hard to miss the tears pricking his eyes

He’s also very perceptive towards break-in’s. Many people have tried to kidnap/assassinate people of higher standing. He’s witnessed many attempts towards lady Rhea. I see him taking night shifts for patrol often, and after the war the habit sticks with him.

He takes a lot onto his shoulders often. It’s not bad. Being dedicated is an admirable trait, yet if you’re down someone will have to stop him from picking up the slack.

He’s no healer, and leaves that job to the professionals. However he doesn’t want anyone to disturb you with the work your missing. So he’ll do it in your stead

Manuela lets him stay in the infirmary past visitation hours. Mostly because he’s so busy during the day that he can’t come by

He won’t return to his room those nights. He prefers to be by your side, just in case.

Other than this type of situation- no, he’s not protective in the slightest.

Monster from Green Hell

Monster from Green Hell is a Giant Atomic Insect movie – I'm pretty sure that alone makes it MST3K eligible, but there are also some less-than-illustrious names involved. Although the film was surprisingly not directed by Bert I. Gordon, it was produced by Al Zimbalist, whose name you may remember reading in the opening credits of Robot Monster. Oooh, and remember Pepe the Latino-Transylvanian janitor from I Was a Teenage Werewolf? Actor Vladimir Sokoloff is in this, too, playing Dr. Lorenz the missionary! Scared yet?

The opening narration explains to us that before mankind can venture into space, he must find out what exposure to cosmic radiation will do to a life form. To this end, Dr. Brady and his colleage Dr. Morgan have collected an apparently random assortment of life forms and are launching them into space on board stock rocket footage (some of which I'm pretty sure we've seen before, perhaps in King Dinosaur). One of the rockets goes off-course and comes back to Earth in central Africa. Six months later, there is panic in the area – although Dr. Lorenz dismisses the stories of 'Green Hell' as some kind of superstition, in the very next scene we see animals at a watering hole being terrorized by a giant mutated bug!

The bugs are hilarious. How do I even describe these things? They're supposed to be mutant wasps but they look kind of like an ant drawn by a seven-year-old with a microscope, with a bee's wings and a lobster's claws attached just for fun. They have nostrils. They buzz constantly even though they never fly, their size varies from 'horse' to 'house' depending on the shot, and the film-makers seem a little unclear on which end of the wasp has the stinger in it. The puppets are detailed enough that they would honestly be kind of impressive if they weren't so silly-looking, and watching them eat hapless extras is a real hoot. At this point the audience settles back with a smile, figuring this movie is going to be awesome.

Then it pulls the rug out from under us. Rather than delving directly into the scientist's quest to destroy the monsters of Green Hell, we follow them through Padding Hell on the way. After speaking to a territorial agent who looks weirdly like Josef Stalin, Brady and Morgan sit around in a hotel for a week and then set off on a month-long trek across the stock footage savannah. On the way they are menaced by natives, nearly die of thirst when they find a contaminated waterhole, and then come down with some kind of fever while they sit out a monsoon. There are a couple of amusing things in this part of the movie, like the incredibly dramatic way the baggage men 'die' when struck by arrows, but that's not what the audience is here to see. By the time the party reaches the Mission, the movie is more than half over.

They arrive there only to learn that Dr. Lorenz was killed by one of the bugs, so it’s off into the mountains to find and exterminate them. So now we're finally gonna get some action, right? Wrong again! The group does manage to lob a few grenades, but these do nothing to their targets except annoy them, and the heroes end up trapped underground when the angry wasp queen causes a cave-in. Time for more padding, as they wander in the dark trying to find their way out! Luckily they discover an escape route before the Mole People can kidnap them... and moments later the local volcano erupts, destroying the hive.

At this point, we realize... we just followed these characters halfway across a continent, only for their story to end in a deus ex machina? Oh, fuck off, movie!

This is becoming a personal pet peeve of mine, actually – heroes who don't do anything. There are an awful lot of them in these movies. Mark English in Devil Doll never did anything. Cabot in Outlaw never did anything. Nobody in The Mad Monster ever did anything. Was this some kind of trend? Because all it does, as I've pointed out before, is make us wonder why we bothered watching this. Imagine if, I dunno, Star Wars ended when the Death Star was hit by a meteor. That would be really, really stupid, wouldn't it?

A coincidence can be a powerful ending for a story as long as it has a meaning. The War of the Worlds ends with the aliens dying of diseases to illustrate the true insignificance of human beings. It works because the protagonist we’ve been following isn’t trying to defeat the invasion, only to survive it. The Lord of the Rings ends with Gollum slipping and falling into the volcano because the point is that the Ring ultimately destroys itself. These are satisfying endings to the stories that came before them. The ending of Monster from Green Hell just looks like the writers ran out of ideas. The characters stand and watch and observe, “nature has a way of correcting its mistakes”, but that makes no damn sense either. The wasps weren't nature's mistake, they were created by humans blasting random shit into space for fun!

This is doubly annoying because Monster from Green Hell starts off pretty well. The exposition gets out of the way quickly, and although we are disappointingly not treated to a rocket crash, it's not long at all before we get to see the monsters causing panic on the savannah. These are just the right kind of deliciously awful that we stick around hoping to see them again. Only slowly do we come to realize that we're never going to get what we really want, which is an actual fight between the heroes and the monsters. The grenade-tossing is fun, but it's not a substitute, and then there's the anticlimax of an ending in which we don't even get to see the wasps overcome by the lava – they're merely superimposed on stock eruption footage while the characters watch. The movie was seventy percent irrelevant bullshit and now it's over, and the first ten minutes or so did such a good job of getting our attention that we feel like we've been tricked. How dare you, movie? How dare you!

There's also a totally useless romantic subplot with Dr. Lorenz' daughter Lorna – and when I say useless, I mean fucking useless. Not only does it not add anything to the story, it doesn't even take anything away. The romance in Terror from the Year 5000 was useless because it wasted time that could have been spent on the actual plot. The romance in Monster from Green Hell doesn't even get any time spent on it. We see that Dr. Brady and Lorna have met, and she keeps running into his arms every time things get intense, but one gets the impression that this only happens because somebody went, “oh, wait, we need a girl in this movie” (and she is, literally, the only woman with lines). Lorna doesn't even get the minimal plot function that would be imparted by needing rescue. Why did they bother?

There are a couple of things in this movie that aren't bad. It's not too terrible in an aesthetic sense, at least. Some of the sets are pretty nice: we open on a matte painting of a desert that isn't really convincing but is still very pretty, and the equipment we see the rocket scientists using is not too laughable. Dr. Lorenz' mission looks convincingly ramshackle, and I like that it's actually more primitive than the native village we see at one point. The monsters are stupid but a lot of effort clearly went into building them, and there's a fun bit where one of them fights a stop-motion python. There's a lot of stock footage but it's usually well matched with the stuff shot for the production – we never find ourselves looking at lions on a savannah while the characters are supposed to be in a trackless jungle (*cough*leechwoman*cough*).

There's also a fairly interesting dynamic between Dr. Lorenz, scoffing at 'native superstition', and his liason with the local tribe, Arobi. Rather surprisingly, the script permits Arobi more dignity than the entire cast of Voodoo Woman put together. He and Dr. Lorenz like and respect one another, but Arobi resents the scientist's accusations of superstition and argues against them quite effectively. At the same time, he doesn't want Dr. Lorenz going into the area called Green Hell to investigate the reports. He is willing to go himself, despite his own fear, and reminds his friend, “I'm much younger than you.” Vladimir Sokoloff and Joel Fluellen manage to give the impression of having known each other for years, and their relationship is the only one in the movie that rings halfway true.

One final observation I have is here is another movie that seems deeply pessimistic about the possibilities for human space travel. Some of the experimental animals we meet were exposed to cosmic radiation for less than a minute, and yet they still show signs of mutation. The monsters, we are told, mutated from ordinary paper wasps in a mere forty hours. That's not even two days, and it took the Apollo astronauts three days to get to the moon – never mind the time they spent there and the trip back! In the world of Monster from Green Hell, I imagine that the space race was scrapped before it even began, when Dr. Brady and his colleages submitted a report explaining that the effects of cosmic rays on living tissue were far too dangerous and unpredictable to risk manned spaceflight. We'd be trapped on Earth, the stars forever beyond our reach.

I guess it's a better excuse than being too cheap to fund NASA.

i think one simple thing that people who insist Hopes!Claude is in character like to ignore is that in the 3H Dream interview, with the original head director Kusakihara, it's said that Claude came out to being a "pure good guy" at the end of his writing and Edel/gard is the villain.

Claude cannot simultaneously have been written as a "pure good guy" while also being willing to let innocent people die for no reason and actively helping the villain get what she wants lmao. i'm sorry that the fanon Claude that is willing to let people die for his own gains is what these people want so badly, but he never existed. "you just want Claude to be a goody two shoes" well yes because that's basically how his OG writers literally described him as being lmao

Yeah, his writing is just really not the same. People can chalk it up to the year at GM all they want and him killing Shahid, but those two aspects wouldn't change his core personality. I agree fully that GM helped him grow and changed his perspective on things, but the core of his character shouldn't change because of it. That being, he wouldn't have a totally wildly different means of doing things just because of it.

As for Shahid, killing his brother, who hated him and wanted him dead on top of calling him horrific things, should not have changed his personality either. He can be sad about it, sure, but evidently it affected him so much that it enabled him to let hundreds if not thousands of others die, and for what? His spiteful, hateful brother who wished nothing but death on him?

I would agree that Claude would prefer to resolve things with Shahid peacefully, but if he was so intent on getting out of that battle alive with Shahid also alive, it's wild to me how he wants peace with a man who wants him very very dead, but he wants to kill Rhea because "nothing personal", he just needs her gone, and this woman has never done a damn thing to him.

Ultimately I'd agree that Claude is a pure, good guy, and that makes sense considering how he grew up. It's not uncommon for people who are hurt growing up to want to be good to people. When you're that hurt, you don't want to inflict that pain or suffering on others because you know what it's like. Claude is a very humane person even if he has trouble expressing those aspects of himself. That's why he's able to pull back when he realizes he's going too far with trying to learn things. That's why if you, as Byleth, try to get him to press Flayn for details and act heartless about it, he's actually kind of shocked and doesn't like it.

Tbh I don't really understand why people want "ebul Claude" so badly. Why is it so bad for him to be a good person? As a fan of AM and Dimitri it's crazy to me because Dimitri fans were very sad when Dimitri was unstable and wanted him to get better. Fans of the route and the character were very much not rooting for him to continue acting like that. One of the reasons I really took to Rodrigue in my first experience with AM is because he was the goddamn only person to scold Dimitri and basically tell him to shut the fuck up and listen (which is ironic because Rodrigue later says he's doesn't have it in him to scold Dimitri, but he just didn't do it in a standard way. He's relatively polite about it, but he still shuts Dimitri up at Ailell, and fast. That's also his first time meeting Dimitri again in literal years, so that says a lot that he was willing to immediately scold him for his behavior).

That said, another thing I hate is how the people around Dimitri don't approve of what he does/says, but with Claude they all just kinda... go with it except Lorenz. People argue with Dimitri and contest his actions/behavior. They argue with him on moral grounds. With Claude there's only one person, again, Lorenz, who continually questions Claude's behavior and doesn't agree with how he's handling things. In AM, it's a lot of people even if they don't tell it to Dimitri's face.

So really, I don't know why people prefer Claude killing people and just going deeper and deeper into that hole. At first he says his hands will never be clean again, but that doesn't mean... make the situation even worse? Generally speaking I don't disagree with what he did in his own Ailell chapter. He didn't personally get too involved in the killing, and his main focus on was on his own people. Firstly, the Empire had been an enemy for a long time and he expected them to be at war again in the not too distant future. Secondly, he wasn't allied with and thus had no obligated to help the Church's people, and those two factions were warring with each other. Letting them fight each other and be decimated... really wasn't his fault, and yet people got on his absolute ass for not uwu helping the Empire who just murdered tons of his people in a war not even that long ago.

Invading the Kingdom is where I'm like... what even is this. If he made a pact with Edelgard to stop his own people from dying, fine, whatever, but he should've told her listen, I'll engage in this pact but I won't help you in your war. You don't attack us, we don't attack you. First he starts killing Kingdom soldiers and then he goes to kill Rhea who... hasn't done anything to him, and he knows and admits that. He just has to kill her simply because people look up to her and follow her. No amount of GM or having to kill Shahid would've changed his whole personality and ideology to such extremes.

Again, I don't really see the appeal in that. I'd rather see him make mistakes and realize how bad they were and turn himself around. I'd rather him come back from starting to be like that. If Claude was like that in Houses I would want the same thing for him, just like everyone wanted for Dimitri.

If people don't like Claude for being a goody two shoes who doesn't wanna kill people, well that's worrying. Why would you want your favorite character to kill a ton of people? Yiker wikers.
