Artemis’s 2022 music awards!
alright y'all it's time for Artemis' music awards for the year, a project that started on twitter and I’m moving to here as well and something that's supposed to be an annual tradition and something I think about every year but that I apparently have forgotten to do more often than not over the last few years, this is partially a project for me to share my supposedly good music taste with the world and partially a time capsule for me in the future to look back at, also for some categories I will be awarding 2 winners, one for metal and one for non-metal for reasons.
I'm not amazing at explaining why I like things and tend to get self-conscious when I try so all of these will be presented with minimal commentary beyond this intro, if you want to learn more about any of my choices, feel free to DM me and I can try to go into further detail
also new this year I'll be including my JAMS rating for every referenced album, it's a personal formula I've been developing as part of my big top 100 albums project, the formula is, complicated and I'm still tweaking it but higher is better and ratings range from roughly 0 to 3.  all JAMS ratings are subject to change in future years and as of the time of writing I only have 29 albums rated out of the 100+ I plan to rate in the future although I do have most of my absolute favorites rated, but take the provisional rankings with somewhat of a grain of salt
also please also bear in mind these awards are exclusively for music I listened to this year, if your favorites aren't here that's because they aren't music I listen to (although feel free to sent them to me and they might make next year's discovered music list if I like them!)
with that out of the way, let's get on to the awards! (below the break to not make this post too long)
Album of the Year (my favorite albums that released in 2022):
Metal: Battle Beast - Circus of Doom (2.18, 7/29)
Non-metal: Taylor Swift - Midnights (2.04, 9/29)
honorable mention: Visions of Atlantis - Pirates (2.01, 10/29)
Song of the Year (my favorite songs that released in 2022):
Metal: Delain - The Quest and the Curse
Non-metal: Porter Robinson - Everything Goes On
honorable mentions:
Taylor Swift - Karma
Visions of Atlantis - Clocks
Battle Beast - Wings of Light
Discovered Song of the Year (my favorite songs not from 2022 but that I listened to for the first time this year):
Winner: Keshi - Blue
honorable mentions:
Death Grips - Hacker
Rise Against - Nowhere Generation
John Parr - St. Elmos Fire (Man in Motion)
Taylor Swift - Blank Space
Discovered Album of the Year (my favorite albums not from 2022 but that I listened to for the first time this year):
Winner: Portugal. The Man - Woodstock (1.93, 17/29)
honorable mentions:
Twenty One Pilots - Blurryface (1.74, 20/29)
Feuerschwanz - Memento Mori (currently unrated)
Most Anticipated Announced Album of 2023:
Delain - Dark Waters
Disappointment of the year:
Blind Guardian - The God Machine (my most anticipated album of 2022)
Music Video of the Year:
Visions of Atlantis - Master the Hurricane
youtube
and finally,
My top 5 all time rated albums by JAMS at time of posting:
1. Dizzy - Baby Teeth (2.68)
2. Porter Robinson - Nurture (2.61)
3. Blackmore's Night - Ghost of a Rose (2.49)
4. Within Temptation - The Heart of Everything (2.41)
5. Within Temptation - Resist (2.20)
If you made it this far, thank you for reading! I hope you enjoy the music and here's to lots more great music being released in 2023!
p.s. yes JAMS is a riff on JAWS, the baseball metric, and the formula is loosely based off of the same concept and I thought it would be a funny name for a music rating system

BTS on gaining respect in the US: ‘We definitely feel that’
Tumblr media
Loud and happy screams erupt in unison from the seven-member pop stars BTS when they hear they have notched their first No. 1 hit on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart.
“DREAM,” yells band member RM. “It still doesn’t feel real,” adds SUGA, speaking in Korean through a translator. “We’re really happy.”
“Dynamite,” the group’s first all-English song, debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. music charts this week, making BTS the first Korean pop act to top the chart. The upbeat song even supplanted “WAP,” the raunchy smash hit by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, to claim the No. 1 position.
“Never expected it,” RM tells The Associated Press of beating “WAP” for the top spot. “Never! It’s like the song of the year.”
But getting their first chart-topping track seemed inevitable for the K-pop boy band, who have continued to find major success in the U.S. in the last few years. They’ve had four albums top Billboard’s 200 albums chart, they’ve achieved Top 10 successes on the Hot 100 with “Boy With Luv,” “On” and “Fake Love,” and in just minutes they’ve sold out U.S. football stadiums that some pop stars need to join forces to perform at.
And even at U.S. awards shows, they’ve gone from winning honors like “top social artist” to being named best group and best pop act, beating out Maroon 5, Imagine Dragons, twenty one pilots, Jonas Brothers and others. At Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, they won all four prizes they were nominated for.
Tumblr media
When asked if BTS — who released their debut single in 2013 — felt like they’ve begun to earn more respect from the U.S., RM said: “We definitely feel that.”
“I think in the perspective of culture, I think it’s really important to be familiar. So first, we think ... that for many Americans (they were) not familiar with (us) — we look different, we (sing) different, we got some different choreography, music videos, like everything, even lifestyle. But I think as time goes by, we’re doing these shows and songs and concerts and awards, I think quite a lot of people in the American music market is getting, like, kind of close (to us),” he said. “I think it’s very good and that’s what we wanted actually.”
Tumblr media
It could also be time for BTS’ first Grammy nomination.
“When we see (Western) artists ... get nominated for Grammys, they would go: ‘Yeah! Yeah!’” said j-hope, standing up from his chair and throwing a small punch in the air.
“Like Travis Scott,” he continued. “The nomination is meaningful to even (famous) people like that and to imagine that we could be nominated for Grammy, again, it would be such an honor and a great feeling.”
Nominees for the 2021 Grammy Awards will be announced later this year. The show doesn’t have a K-pop category, and while there is a best world music album award, there isn’t a song category for world and international music. Those songs, then, would compete for best pop duo/group performance — a highly competitive award reserved for big hits or collaborations featuring uber-popular performers.
Tumblr media
But the success of “Dynamite” could explode into a Grammy nomination for BTS.
“The sheer thought of a nomination is thrilling,” said j-hope.
“I mean, we hope. We hope so,” said RM. “No one knows about the Grammys ... but we’re just doing our best.”
Though “Dynamite” has charted new territory for BTS, the song wasn’t even supposed to be released, RM explained. BTS had plans to tour but that changed due to the coronavirus: “The pandemic blew everything away.”
So they recorded “Dynamite” to give their die-hard fans, the BTS Army, “hope, positive energy,” RM said.
“And we think that it really touched their hearts.”
Tumblr media
The group, which includes Jin, V, Jimin, and Jung Kook, says they’re busy recording a new album. They feel they have a grown in the seven years they’ve been a musical group.
“We’ve matured musically, as well as in the way we think. We’ve also developed a higher sense of responsibility. This has refined us and these developments are really being reflected in our music and our dance,” j-hope said.
The band members range from ages 23 to 27, and the youngest of clan, Jung Kook, celebrated his birthday this week with some special news.
“I received the news of our No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart on the day of my birthday, so it was really one celebration over another,” he said. “It was incredible.”

·         Over the weekend, Billie Eilish performed at the 2020 iHeartRadio ALTer EGO Festival, where she revealed when we can expect the release of her sophomore album. “This year? No, but I will be making it this year,” she said.
·         Producer Tommie Sunshine and dance artist Disco Fries turned the track “Falling in Love Will Kill You” into an electronic club remix. In 2014, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way collabed with Wrongchilde (Mat Devine, formerly of Kill Hannah) for the song.
·         Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams released her solo debut after many weeks of waiting with a song titled “Simmer.” She then took to social media to share an extended cut of the video, titled “Simmer Interlude.”

·         Billie Eilish shared the music video for her latest single “Everything I Wanted,” which features the talents of her brother FINNEAS. She shared the video with a caption revealing that she directed the video herself.
·         Machine Gun Kelly shared an Instagram story showing that he would be collabing with The Used on his upcoming pop-punk album. In the video, we see MGK dancing next to Blink-182’s Travis Barker with The Used frontman Bert McCracken singing in the booth.
·         Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong allowed Tyla Yaweh and Wiz Khalifa to use a sample of the band’s hit “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” for the remix of Yaweh’s song, “High Right Now.” The singer also makes an appearance in the track’s accompanying music video.
·         Tyler Joseph of Twenty One Pilots posted a picture with cryptic caption including the words “rough mix,” which may indicate new music on the way. The band has not put out an album since Trench in 2018.
·         Picturesque released a new single titled “Necessary,” alongside a music video, via Equal Vision Records. The band kicked off a tour with Hands Like Houses and Dead American on Saturday in Brooklyn, New York.
·         The Wonder Years dropped a new acoustic version of an old song, “Washington Square Park,” to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their record The Upsides. The band is hitting the road soon with Free Throw, Spanish Love Songs and Pool Kids for a special tour.
TOUR ANNOUNCEMENTS:
·         YUNGBLUD announced The Underrated Youth North American Spring Tour, starting off with his two Coachella performances on April 12 and 19. From there, he will play a total of 16 shows before wrapping up the tour at the Hangout Music Festival in Alabama in mid-May.

·         Bayside will be celebrating their 20th anniversary with the 20 Years of Bad Luck Tour. The band plans on bringing fellow acts Senses Fail, Hawthorne Heights and Can’t Swim on the road with them.
OTHER NEWS:
·         Fall Out Boy appeared on the iconic game show The Price is Right. Only one half of the band, Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz, were present, but the pair hilariously played the game, filled in and even modeled prizes for other contestants.
·         Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco was revealed to be making an appearance in Taylor Swift‘s new Netflix documentary, Miss Americana. The duo previously worked together on their collaboration for Swift’s latest album, titled “ME!”
·         Fearless Records announced they would be hosting an immersive music and merchandise arcade pop-up to raise money for Heart Support and the Living the Dream Foundation. The event was held over this past weekend in Los Angeles.

·         Basketball legend Kobe Bryant, age 41, passed away on Sunday following a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria Onore and Orange Coast College basketball coach John Altobelli were also tragically killed in the crash.
·         The 62nd Grammy Awards were held on Sunday at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, with all Rock/Alternative categories announced prior to the televised program. Winners included Tool, Gary Clark Jr., Cage the Elephant, Vampire Weekend and Soundgarden.
·         Delivering an emotional performance of her hit song “When the Party’s Over,” Billie Eilish accepted her first ever Grammy Awards. Eilish had six total nominations, breaking a record as the youngest artist to be nominated and win the four major categories.

TØP Weekly Update #86: Are You Filming Me Right Now?(3/8/19)
Tumblr media
Speed run! (I had a final paper due today, been focused on that, my b.)
Bear Hands got announced as the headliner for the second leg of the North American Bandito Tour. Tyler played “Can’t Help Falling In Love” for International Women’s Day. Drum Island got a remix. Tyler’s learning how to open up pits. The Clique still can’t shut up for more than four seconds. Next week, the band plays their last show in the UK before heading over to Paris (Accorhotels Arena, 20,300 capacity), Amsterdam (Ziggo Dome, 17,000), and Brussels (Palais 12, 15,000). Not expecting too many further surprises, but maybe the boys will do something interesting tomorrow for their first time playing three consecutive shows in the same arena. Who’s to say!
In other news: Tyler and Josh returned to their old Vine days to make fun of our phone smuggling techniques. This coward called us slimeballs and called in to an Irish radio show (pictured above) to actually talk about what “Chlorine” means. Tyler and Josh were accused of glamorizing terrorism. You know. Standard stuff.
Perhaps the most exciting news from this week is that “Fake You Out” has been certified gold by the RIAA. As we reported just a few weeks ago, that leaves “Truce” as the only track from Vessel not to have reached that milestone. When it inevitably does (#StreamTruce), Vessel will be only the fourth album to attain that honor and make Twenty One Pilots the first artist to attain that honor twice. All from a 2013 album without a single radio hit. Truly the GOAT.
In other commercial song performance news, “My Blood” has fallen off at all metrics, but “Chlorine” is still making decent traction at radio. Still keeping my fingers crossed that it will make it. Maybe if Tyler capitalized on all his Fortnite love and played a virtual concert or something...
Power to the local dreamer.

Who better to start things off for MTV’s 40th birthday, but Madonna, who’s been there since the beginning?
In a premade video showing her driving in a taxi around New York City, the Queen of Pop talks about her four-decade-long journey in the industry and how her rise with the network happened. “We found each other and formed a bond that changed my life, changed music and created a whole new art form,” she declared, “so there’s only one place to be tonight.”
The camera then cut inside Barclays, where the 63-year-old pop star took to the stage in a black leather Dominatrix getup and proudly declared: “They said we won’t last, but we’re still here mom—rs.” Happy 40th MTV!”
She then just turned and left, showing her notoriety behind. With this, Justin Bieber and The Kid Laroi began the first performance of the night.

During Twenty One Pilots’ performance of “Saturday,” singer Tyler Joseph announced some big news mid-song — he and his wife, Jenna, are expecting their second child together!
“My wife is pregnant with our second child,” he said during a musical pause in the track. “I didn’t want to message everyone, so I thought I’d let you know now.”
“Now you know. Now you can go to bed!” He said while ending the song. Fans were thrilled!

After a proud introduction to Billy Porter, Lil Nas X hit the VMAs in his pink prison uniform from his infamous “Industry Baby” music video. Surrounded by male makeup dancers, she performed the entire song with Jack Harlow, who joined her on stage in a very form-fitting black pleather dress.
The rapper then recreated the shower scene from the video – but changed the censored blur for bright pink boxer briefs – surrounded by more half-naked men. It was a pleasure.

NEW YORK — Loud and happy screams erupt in unison from the seven-member pop stars BTS when they hear they have notched their first No.
When asked if BTS — who released their debut single in 2013 — felt like they’ve begun to earn more respect from the U.S., RM said: “We definitely feel that.”
“I think in the perspective of culture, I think it’s really important to be familiar. So first, we think … that for many Americans (they were) not familiar with (us) — we look different, we (sing) different, we got some different choreography, music videos, like everything, even lifestyle. But I think as time goes by, we’re doing these shows and songs and concerts and awards, I think quite a lot of people in the American music market is getting, like, kind of close (to us),” he said. “I think it’s very good and that’s what we wanted actually.”
It could also be time for BTS’ first Grammy nomination.
“When we see (Western) artists … get nominated for Grammys, they would go: ‘Yeah!
But the success of “Dynamite” could explode into a Grammy nomination for BTS.
“The sheer thought of a nomination is thrilling,” said j-hope.
“I mean, we hope. We hope so,” said RM. “No one knows about the Grammys … but we’re just doing our best.”
