I just realized that the AJ trilogy letting you play the cases in any order (and jumping to whatever chapter you want) means I can
FINALLY
play through Turnabout Countdown and the Cosmic Turnabout in the proper order

😞 One wild arguement I saw is it's wrong to say J made Jason more interesting because " it implies trauma makes people more complex, therefore it's good". These are characters and trauma does in fact make them more interesting??? Yes literature has impact on the real world but as a genre superhero comics would not work without this. ( Almost) No one would tune into Bruce Wayne economics class 101. That J plotline made Jason more recognisable- non fans literally know him mainly for it, individualised him further and got him more fans, and got his fans to care even more about him because J is fucked beyond belief, and gave Jason an overarching mission. Alas, J is not some evil entity possessing writer's minds, but a very convenient and efficient device to push these characters to their limits. Why would you want that gone, I don't get it. To hate him as a character based on his morality is more than valid( Jason beating him up is some good shit), but to hate the existence of him as a character is strange imo. He drives the plot forward. ( And carries archetypes and universal themes therefore is bound to stay as a relevant and popular character, but that's another topic)
Some things are just deep emotional gut reactions, I think. This applies to real life as well. You just might really not vibe with a person, or with a character, and they might get on your nerves even though there's little rational reason for it. It doesn't really matter to that emotional side of you that a character might have a deep convoluted history, or is very important to the narrative. And I do believe this is a perfectly normal thing, disliking a character doesn't necessitate a reason. You can just say you don't personally resonate with them and move on. I only think pure, vitriolic hatred raises many questions, because a lot of the time it also involves treating the character as if they're a real person, and/or also hating the fans of that character. After all, since one can't harass a fictional character (on account of them not existing), the next best option is harassing the real fans (who sadly are within this mortal plane).
This all ties into the first thing you mention, Anon -- that argument regarding trauma denotes an inability to differentiate between reality and fiction, and a type of black-and-white moral thinking that's hard to combat. Conflict drives a story forward. It's simply a narrative device, and of course, traumatic events will be part of that conflict. What made Bruce Wayne become Batman, the main character we all follow? The death of his parents. What prompted Jack Oswald White to become the Joker, his main antagonist? The death of his wife and unborn child. What made Dick Grayson take on the Robin mantle? The death of his parents. What prompted Jason Todd to become the Red Hood? His death at Joker's hands.
And so it goes. At their core, Batman comics especially are about dealing with trauma. There's horrible events happening in canon all the time, but that doesn't mean the writers or the fans think that trauma is good. An adult story is not meant to teach you moral lessons; you're supposed to bring your own critical thinking to the table. Joker happened to be the vehicle through which Jason underwent major conflict, which then became a turning point in his evolution and made him into a fascinating anti-hero. (Not even going to delve into the interesting aspect of Jason's death that is the fact fans voted for him to get killed off.) As you say, characters are, at their core, tools in a story. And again, anyone can just dislike Joker, but the intense wave of hatred towards him specifically is... well, it isn't entirely about him. He's become a fandom scapegoat in a lot of ways, and a popular method to signal loud and clear that you're denouncing the "evil toxic serial killer" for many fans. But that's a whole other can of worms that I've gotten into elsewhere already.
#and. okay kind of unrelated rant incoming but these are my tags and I do what I want#I don't think this was at all intentional but#Joker killing Jason and then Jason taking on the identity of Red Hood#is just SO SO INTERESTING#also because Jason's story prior to getting adopted by Bruce is similar to what we can piece together of Joker's own childhood#Joker also very likely dealt with abusive parents who had substance addictions#and ended up living on the streets#however. where Jason got adopted by Bruce and given a second chance#as per Streets of Gotham. Joker as a child got kidnapped by a mobster who then abused him some more#one way or another Joker became the Red Hood later in life. but not by choice#if The Killing Joke is to be believed (and at this point it's unavoidable)#being Red Hood signified being a VICTIM. he was coerced into it#and then 'Joker' was the identity he made for himself after the fall in the acid#and just. this twisted victim of an endlessly traumatic life. choosing to become a monster and lashing out at the world#ending up killing a child who was just like him...#and then that child coming back from the dead. much like Joker survived the acid fall. and CHOOSING#Joker's own prior Red Hood identity that signifies being a VICTIM to him#and making it his own#is just. it's FASCINATING#not to mention the fact BRUCE failed to save Joker AND Jason. which being Red Hood is also associated with#I have so many thoughts about this. fuck#asks#fandom negativity#joker

I didn’t know if you were comfortable having your last post reblogged or if it was personal but i just wanna say i absolutely agree. i find myself doing the same w comparing kudos and comments and hits with other works that have more ‘mainstream’ tags and pairings. and it sucks. not only since i don’t like comparing creative works but because those works also deserve appreciation. they just get a lot more attention than works with the same passion and dedication behind them that just. don’t fit the rest of the fandom’s very limited focus.
i’m not gonna put myself on that list bc i have a lot more practice to do when it comes to novel-style writing (i’m better w scripts or just crafting stories in general) but the amount of god tier fics (like your own) have so much genuine love put into them that get crumbs of praise of what they wholly deserve when compared with other stuff. IT SUCKS. i wish fandom would start encouraging people to explore different stories or just. like you said. find stuff past their comfort level. AND THEY MIGHT FIND SMTH THEY LIKE. either way they’ll make a less appreciated author really happy someone checked out their stuff.
also unrelated but people would have a much normal approach to fanfiction if they branched out. people have a very limited view on derivative fiction bc they don’t search past the occasional smut one shot.
Okay now that I am not dead and deceased I can formulate a response. 💀 but YES these are my exact thoughts! esp the last part!
Like I obviously don’t think folks who create for whatever’s popular in the moment are somehow Bad - and I completely understand why artists in particular who make a significant income on their comms/fan art have to stay abreast of the current hype trains, as sucky as it is - but I dunno. I see those posts go around from time to time like “let’s hear it for the under-appreciated works!” and they get SO many likes/reblogs and it’s like….. lmao okay but where are all you people on AO3/in the notes of the fics posted here???
I know I’ve been posting about the same game/old man for over two years now so me saying ‘maybe folks should branch out’ might sound hypocritical but truly, I do fear that the very narrow focus in some fans/fandoms, as you said, is pushing even professional creators to start making things that feed into those desires. Because it’s profitable and guaranteed to have reach, which in the end results not in art but a product.
I so appreciate your compliments btw and I am gritting my teeth trying to accept them without insisting that I am undeserving lol. Your fic is honestly so wonderful too and I want to run around holding it up to everyone I see like Patrick doing the “YOU LOOK AT IT” scene in SpongeBob. Ily thank you for always ranting with me in my inbox, our galaxy brains are truly not appreciated in our time.

so you're not a registered rescue yet you're asking people for donations? sounds like a scam. you also show poor knowledge of rabbit care and are neglecting your fish, and support letting cats free roam outside. maybe you should rethink this animal thing, you clearly know nothing about animal safety and care. yikes.
I've had anon turned back on for 3 hours people, but sure, lets do this again.Per the 501c3 requirements I cannot apply as a registered rescue because my rescue does not have any revenue or income, the only members of my rescue are my immediate family, and I can not afford the $400-900 application fee. Per the FAQ page
“The IRS does not grant tax exemption to organizations that do not have their programs budgeted. They require detail regarding your proposed activities to ensure you qualify as a 501(c)(3) organization.
Regarding Your Budget: Your Nonprofit budget needs to balance out each year on the document you submit to the IRS. Significant profits or losses will be a point of concern with the IRS. Significant profits will prompt the IRS to assume you may be operating as a for-profit corporation.
First, you must form a Nonprofit corporation in your home state. Second, your organization must adopt bylaws and obtain an employer identification number. Then, you must prepare and submit an application to the IRS that requests tax exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). The application review process takes the IRS from 3-6 months.
The IRS wants to ensure that the control of the Nonprofit is held by individuals focused on public benefit. According to the IRS, related directors, or those with common business interests (i.e., they own a business together), cannot make a disinterested vote.
Even if related directors are unpaid, the IRS may still ask the Nonprofit to revise the board to people who are unrelated.
Most people forming Nonprofit organizations prefer to set up a 501(c)(3) public charity because the opportunities for public donations are far greater. Private donors to a 501(c)(3) "public charity" may donate up to 50% of their adjusted gross income. Donors to a "private foundation" can only donate up to 30% of their adjusted gross income.
Ultimately, the IRS will look at an organization's primary source of financial support to determine if it qualifies as a public charity or a private foundation. In general, if an organization derives its support from a relatively few number of people, the IRS will classify the organization as a private foundation. If the organization's source of support is large and varied enough, the IRS will usually classify the foundation as a public charity.”
So, I am currently in the process of forming my Rescue, but have not deemed it an immediate concern yet because my goal is to first network with other rescues in the larger areas (I’m in a small farming town outside of Orlando), Form ties with the community to acquire board members and volunteers, and gain interested sponsors so as to complete the requirements for an official nonprofit status.
In regards to my animal care, I do not let my cats roam freeoutside, there are several feral cats I care for, they lived on the old orangegrove my mother’s neighborhood was built on, I feed them, tend to any injuriesor illnesses they have, had them all spayed and neutered, and have set upshelter for them in the rain. Pretty Lady, who brought her kittens to us, isprimarily at Porch cat, but will not come inside, and when she does its usuallyto cut through the house from the front door to the back so she doesn’t have tohop the fence if its raining.
My cat’s are: Angel, who is blind, and Boxer, who belongs tomy niece, Milo who is in my icon is my brother James’ cat and lives primarily inhis room because he is a very shy kitty, unless he is slinking down to sneakinto the bunny room. These cats get supervised play outside with the bunnies, they do not live outside, but they enjoy the outdoors the same as anyone. Wehave outdoor enclosures, but that is because it rains a lot and there is therisks of birds hunting them, also it gives them a place to roll around in pilesof hay or dig deep ankle breaking tunnels they can’t do inside. Rabbits need toforage, they need to dig, it’s a requirement they have, if you do not provideyour rabbit with some kind of sandbox they will begin destructive habits. Somefamilies give them hay mats or ball pits instead of sand boxes for a more messfree stimulation.
My rabbit care is far from perfect, no animal caregiver isthe best, and if you go into rescue with the idea you will always have theperfect setup you will never succeed. Sometimes all you can do is have a communalplay area and a few small enclosures, which is why rescues end up having kennels.Rabbits also have very scary disagreements, the bonding process of rabbits canturn violent fast, but if you do not let your buns work things out they willonly get worse, its up to the parent to monitor when an argument between bunsbecomes dangerous and when its just a little flying fur, and to separate accordingly.
In regards to the fish, we’re going to go over this one lasttime. Mustachio has a 50 gallon former tank, this means it is a triangle with acurved front, it looks smaller than it is because it extends into the back. When he began to outgrow this tank I began the search for a better setup, as myvet recommended a pond I started that process, however I had no funds and a lotof bunnies with health issues, Mustacio was not in immediate danger but therabbits where, so he was put on the backburner. When I got my settlement checkfrom my car accident last spring immediately resumed my quest for a pond, however it would take months for the HOA process to approve an in ground pond,so I got a 100 gal patio pond to solve the more immediate crisis.
When the subject of the pleco and goldfish came up I taggedsomeone I knew and respected for advice, and followed their advice, I decidedthat since the pleco is still only around 3 inches he could continue living inthe 50 gal tank with the new guppies, who are in a 15gal holding tank for quarantineright now, and I would place Mustachio with a few little feeder fish from thebarn into the pond, as I had every intention of getting a bigger pond and theywould not grow fast enough to be in dire need before then.
At my mother’s barn there are 2 bait tanks, they look like bigfreezers, that hold goldfish kept to control mosquitoes in the water troughs. Theydon’t live long because of birds, racoons, frogs, cats, and the horsesthemselves eating them. The first tank is the gold fish that are ready to beput out in the horse troughs, many of these horses are around $10-20k horsesand they cannot risk exposure to unscreened fish in their tanks, so the secondtank is the newly bought goldfish that are kept for quarantine and observation. You can buy these fish for bait if you want to go fishing, I bought a few fromthe prescreened tank, knowing that mustachio would probably eat a few of them Ibought 5, big fish tend to each fry you see. My nieces’ balloon mollies arealways easing their own babies. True enough, he ate the 2 smallest, which iswhy Beebee is in their own little area, because I really liked the colors and Iwanted to protect her until she grew big.
However, because several people can’t accept that atemporary solution that is not immediately harmful (such as a kennel or asmaller tank) with the active steps underway to create ideal conditions(adoptions or a pond) is better than euthanasia I have had my askbox, my messaging,my replies, and my own mother’s facebook filled with rants, insults, andthreats because I dared to disagree that keeping a pleco and a goldfish togetherwould be immediately lethal to either of them, and that a 100gal pond was asuitable temporary fix to a housing issue.
Oh, also that I keep goldfish in horse water troughs, andfeed my fish bloodworms, because vegans.
