(R): Magic Bus
Explore the a magic bus that takes passengers to a magic tea town under a magic sky.
I hate buses. I try to avoid them as far as practicable. But sadly, they still remain one of the most reliable, cheap, and practicable ways to travel. We still can’t fly to places; we still don’t have the wings or the will – this is one of my top complaints with the human body. I recently went on a backpacking trip across Kerala and there is so much to talk about it (quick review: beautiful,…

DAY 5919
StWork, Mumbai May 2, 2024 Thu 12:49 PM
Birthday - EF - Elena Iankova Friday, 3 May .. and all our wishes for a happy birthday
🌹
Yo !
here before time for a very big change .. haha ..
but at work and got a bit of time and BOOM !
got to say the travel from Juhu home to work Marine Drive in 30 mins .. amazing Coastal Road and the Tunnel emerging on Marine Drive , just before its flyover and simply amazing .. !
Super constructed roads, tunnel, neat clean construct .. no traffic jams .. and done ..
Ok just to change the topic .. here is something to know :
Know what is a "mondegreen?'
MONDEGREENS
If you’ve been listening to rock music, you know it’s often hard to make out the lyrics. They sing it their way and we hear it our way.
Jimi Hendrix famously sang the phrase “While I kiss the sky” which was heard by thousands as “While I kissed this guy.”
CCR’s popular song originally said, “There’s a bad moon on the rise.” Many heard it as “There’s a bathroom on the right.”
Deep Purple’s still-popular chorus (known for its timeless guitar riff) “Smoke on the water/Fire in the sky” was misheard as “Smoke on the water/Fire engine guy.”
Nirvana’s anthem “Smells like Teen Spirit” had the lines, “Here we are now/Entertain us.” They were misheard as, “Here we are now/In containers.”
When Elvis Presley sang, “Everybody in the whole cell block”, many heard it as” Everybody in a wholesale frock”
There’s actually a word for misheard lyrics like these.
Mondegreen.
Some mondegreens became so famous that even artistes like Hendrix and CCR sang the misheard versions in their live concerts in a spirit of fun and tease.
It’s not just in pop songs that mondegreens occur. The US national anthem begins with the lofty words, “Oh say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light.’ Some heard them as “José, can you see…”
Occasionally, mondegreens had an interesting side-effect. Joe Cocker sang of a ‘lovely planet’ which was misheard as ‘lonely planet.’ The latter became the name of a well-known travel guide series of books.
No one knows why we hear the wrong thing although there are theories. It’s akin to the game of Chinese Whispers where the original line gets progressively distorted into some hilarious garbage by the time it reaches the last guy.
Mondegreens are not restricted to English alone. South Indians, with limited knowledge of Hindi, were taught patriotic songs in Hindi by zealous teachers. A popular one had the repeating phrase, “Bara tamata.” School students sang it with great gusto. Years later, some of them realized the actual words were “Bharat Mata.”
A popular line from Qurbani song, “Aap jaisa koi meri/zindagee mein aaye/ toh baat bun jaaye” was understood as “Aap jaisa koi…toh baap bun jaaye.” The defective version made sense to many who saw Zeenat Aman gyrating on those lyrics while gaping at Feroz Khan.
Many who weren’t familiar with the hill station between Bombay and Pune heard the Gulaami song as “Haathi ka andaa la” until they realized it was “Aati kya Khandala”.
I have a friend, her name is Geeta. Her family called her Gitu. Throughout her childhood and youth, she thought Rajesh Khanna was singing for her, when he said, ”Mere sapnon ki raani kab aaye Gitu”.
'Mondegreen' sounds French but isn't. In 1954, a writer at Harper’s Magazine remembered how as a little girl she misheard an old English ballad. The actual words, saluting a dead war hero, were:
𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘭 𝘰' 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯.
She heard them as:
𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘭 𝘰' 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯.
And thus was born the word ‘mondegreen’ to signify all misheard lyrics from that moment on.
Turns out, mondegreen itself started life as a mondegreen.
sent to me by a friend .. 🤣🤣
More perhaps later .. or perhaps not ..

Amitabh Bachchan
and some more .. a very pertinent article in TOI ..

Benedict Arnold
Benedict Arnold (1741-1801) was a general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). He was considered one of the finest Patriot military officers during the early years of the conflict but defected to the British in 1780 after being repeatedly passed over for promotion. Today, the phrase 'Benedict Arnold' remains a colloquialism for 'traitor' in the U.S.
Early Life & Family
The future Revolutionary War general was the scion of a noteworthy New England family. His great-grandfather, the first Benedict Arnold, had served as colonial governor of Rhode Island for 15 years. During his tenure, New England was ravaged by the destructive King Philip's War (1675-1678), and Governor Arnold spent his final years aiding in Rhode Island's recovery. In 1730, the governor's grandson and namesake, the third Benedict Arnold, emigrated to Norwich, Connecticut, to seek his fortune; he soon became a prosperous merchant and successful sea captain. In 1733, Captain Arnold married the widowed Hannah Waterman King, with whom he would ultimately have six children. Only two of these children would live to adulthood: a son, the fourth Benedict, and a daughter, Hannah (b. 1742).
Benedict Arnold (the future general) was born on 14 January 1741 in Norwich. The success of his father's business meant that Arnold's childhood was comfortable. Robust and athletic, the young Arnold spent his free time ice skating upon Connecticut's frozen lakes and leading the local boys in mischievous stunts such as leaping over loaded wagons that were driving down the main street or setting fire to a barrel of tar atop the town's hill. Alongside these episodes of recklessness, Arnold showed an aptitude for writing. At the age of ten, his mother enrolled him at a private school in Canterbury, with hopes that he would go on to be educated at Yale College.
It was not to be. By the early 1750s, Captain Arnold's fortunes had begun to decline; he had overextended his business and was now faced with staggering debt. Captain Arnold slipped into alcoholism and eventually lost his business altogether. No longer able to pay for their son's education, the Arnolds pulled young Benedict out of private school and instead apprenticed him to his mother's cousin, an apothecary named Dr. Lathrop. Arnold proved a dutiful apprentice but nevertheless yearned for adventure. The outbreak of the French and Indian War (1754-1763) would give him an opportunity, and, in 1757, he obtained Dr. Lathrop's permission to join the Norwich militia to help defend Fort William Henry from French and Native American attack. The Norwich militia had barely begun its march, however, when it learned that the fort had already fallen; their mission now pointless, the militia disbanded and went home.
Still thirsting for adventure, Arnold ran away the following year to join a New York militia stationed outside Albany. He showed promise and impressed his fellow militiamen with his excellent marksmanship and ability to march for hours without tiring. But before he could see any action, Arnold received news that his mother was dangerously ill; he deserted to return to Norwich and was by her side when she died on 15 August 1758. The death of his wife only sent Captain Arnold spiraling further into alcoholism. He was arrested in 1761 for public drunkenness and died the next year. Arnold was left with the funeral expenses of both his parents.

The Great Race Part 5
(Ashima finds the docks manager.)
Dock manager: Well we do need to clear the line for the coaches. We have a cruise liner stopping here at 2 o'clock and the vacationers will need to have a train for their tour of the island. Do you think you can shunt the cars on the oceanside line to the middle line?
Ashmia: Yes sir. Thank you for giving me a job until another engine arrives to help me.
(She blows her whistle and goes on her way.)
Narrator: After spending time helping Salty and Porter organize the docks, the cruise liner arrives promptly at 2 pm.
Salty: Ha ha arggh! You did a fine job, me lady. The docks are in ship shape for Edward's train.
(Edward's whistle is heard in the distance.)
Edward: Oh. Hello there. I wasn't aware that we have a new engine.
Ashima: My name is Ashima. I was left behind when the ship going to the Great Railway Show stopped here by mistake. I was hoping if there was an engine who can help me.
(Edward rolls back to be coupled up to his train.)
Edward: I think you should follow me to Wellsworth. Gordon's train travels all the way to Vicarstown. You can ask our controller if you can accompany him on the trip as his banker engine.
(Ashmia smiles.)
Ashmia: Thank you so much, Edward.
Narrator: And so Ashima accompanies Edward as they travel to Wellsworth.
(Sir Topham Hatt's about to leave his office when he gets a call from the station master.)
Sir Topham Hatt: I see. Well have Ashima wait in a siding until Gordon arrives. I'll have the stationmaster in Vicarstown tell Ashima about the bridge's schedule when they arrive.
(He hangs up the phone as we cut to the stationmaster walking up to Ashima.)
Stationmaster: I need you to wait in a siding until Gordon arrives. He'll need a banker engine to get over Gordon's Hill.
Ashima: Yes sir.
(She blows her whistle and rolls to a nearby siding.)
Narrator: When Gordon arrives, he's very confused to see Ashima.
Gordon: Who in the world is this?
Ashima: I'm sorry. My name is Ashima. I was left behind when my ship landed at your docks by mistake. I'm supposed to be competing at the Great Railway Show. Your controller said I can be your banker engine until you get to Vicarstown.
(Gordon looks annoyed but sighs.)
Gordon: Are you even able to go more than 30 miles per hour?
Ashima: No but I work on an Indian rack railway that travels up into the mountains. I can help push you up the hill without you having to push yourself to a maximum speed.
Narrator: Gordon realizes he can't waste time arguing. So he decides to get coupled to his coaches.
Gordon: Well try to keep up. It would be unacceptable if I reach the station late.
(Ashima rolls herself into position where she's right behind Gordon but uncoupled.)
Narrator: The guard blows his whistle and Gordon shoots out of the station. Ashima maintains her maximum speed just to keep up with Gordon.
Gordon: Why are you going to the Great Railway Show?
Ashima: I'm participating in the shunting competition.
(Gordon laughs.)
Gordon: Shunting?! Leave it to a frivolous show to come up with such a competition to cater to the small tank engines.
(Ashima humphs.)
Ashima: You shouldn't be laughing at someone who's helping you and can easily let you get stuck.
(Ashima starts slowing down just as they reach Gordon's Hill.)
Narrator: Gordon gasps and looks very concerned about being stuck.
Gordon: Oh please speed up. I'm very sorry for being rude. I just can't be stuck on this hill again. My passengers will be delayed and say this is a terrible railway.
(Ashima waits a second before helping him.)
Ashima: Alright. But only because you apologized and the passengers come first.
(Gordon feels the ease on his tender and sighs.)
Gordon: Oh thank you. I promise to help you in anyway I can once we get to Vicarstown.
Narrator: So Gordon and Ashima work together to get the train to Vicarstown on time.
(The stationmaster walks onto the platform.)
Stationmaster: Gordon I have terrible news. The Vicarstown bridge is broken. You won't be able to stop here for a couple of days until the bridge is repaired.
(He notices Ashima.)
Stationmaster: Terribly sorry. I'm afraid you won't be able to travel to the Mainland either.
Ashima: I see. Does your controller know what I can do until the bridge is repaired?
Stationmaster: I believe you'll be able to assist in shunting duties whenever necessary. For today you will be working in the shunting yards here.
Ashima: Yes sir.
(Ashima blows her whistle and rolls away.)
Ashima: Goodbye, Gordon.
Gordon: Goodbye, Ashima.

Delhi, the historical capital of India, is all about stories of the past. Among several landmarks, there’s one unusual place that stands out as a whispered legend of supernatural intrigue known as Machla Mahal. The place is still shrouded in mystery.
Let’s find out more about this mysterious place.
History of Malcha Mahal
For those who don’t know, Malcha Mahal is a Tughlaq-era hunting lodge built in 1325 by Feroz Shah Tughlaq. The palace is situated in Malcha, which is one of the pretty hamlets around Raisina Hill.
For centuries, the mansion remained abandoned before a mysterious family started living there. The family claimed to be descendants of the Nawab of Awadh. Wilayat Mahal, head of the family, along with her son Ali Raza and daughter Sakina Mahal started living inside the palace. She claimed to be the great-granddaughter of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and for years, she used to live near the New Delhi station.
She demanded the Indian government to return her ancestral property, which was seized by the British illegally. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, got involved in this and after looking at the miserable condition of the family ordered to find a residence for Wilayat Mahal. Eventually Malcha Mahal was given to them and the family moved into the property in 1985.
Haunted tales
As per locals, the palace is haunted by the spirit of Begum Wilayat Mahal. She committed suicide after allegedly gulping down crushed diamonds. The last member of this mysterious royal family Prince Ali Raza also died in 2017. He was found dead inside the palace.
The reputation of Machla Mahal as one of the most haunted places in Delhi attracts a number of paranormal enthusiasts and thrill-seekers. Several visitors come here in the hopes of an eerie encounter, laced with modern cameras and voice recorders. Some also carry ghost-hunting equipment.
But irrespective of Machla Mahal’s haunted reputation, the place remains an important part of Delhi's historical heritage and it stands as a witness to the city's rich past.
