Nishant Sharma devastated his opponent!
Tumblr media
At the 2019 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, Indian poker player Nishant Sharma made a remarkable call with just a pair of sixes on the river against his opponent's bluff. The board read 9-6-5-3-2, and Sharma had pocket sixes for just a pair of sixes. His opponent, Russian player Daria "Dasha" Feshchenko, had been bluffing with 8-7 offsuit and missed her draw on the river.
Despite the huge amount of pressure and the massive stakes involved, Sharma made the difficult call and won the pot. His impressive call was later featured in ESPN's WSOP Main Event coverage and became one of the most talked-about hands of the tournament.
While there have been many other impressive hands played by Indian poker players, this one stands out for its courage and strategic thinking in a high-pressure situation.

Indian Gaming: Introduction to the World of Poker
A fascination in playing cards and gambling for chips began at an early age for this writer. Many folk my age probably learned how to “play cards” sitting around the kitchen table with family. The best time for me was when my Dad Wilsey would participate because he would teach me how to read my hands. I learned very fast and went on to beat Dad Wilsey after learning “the bluff”, he had taught me…

“NON-CHRISTIAN INDIAN SWORN,” Brantford Expositor. January 6, 1933. Page 5. ---- Huron Claus Gave Affirmation as to His Evidence ---- HAMILTON, Jan. 6— (CP)— Electing to be tried in a higher court, Robert Kremer was committed for trial in police court to-day on a charge of robbery while armed. The charge hinged on the hold-up of a group of card players at the apartment of James Woods on December 17. Harvey Laforme and Huron Claus, pleaded guilty to the charge Wednesday and are at present awaiting sentence.
When the time came for Huron Claus to be sworn, it was 'found necessary to look up the Indian Act regarding the way to swear in a non-Christian Indian. Claus was questioned closely by the magistrate regarding his religious beliefs and then repeated a declaration that "he solemnly affirmed and declared the evidence he would give to the court in the case would be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”
After a further caution regarding perjury, Claus took the stand and identified the pistol which he had carried during the robbery.

Poker Is A Sport And Not Just A Game
Poker is one of the most popular skill-based sports in India. It has been gaining popularity in the country since the beginning of the 21st century. Nowadays, it has become a serious profession. Players can use their brain power to ace their way to the top. Poker is becoming more and more accepted as a sport that tests cognitive skills.
The bigger side of Poker Poker is not only a card game, but it plays an important role in many aspects of life. For example, it teaches skills like decision-making and risk assessment. These skills can be applied to real-world situations such as business negotiation, investing, strategic planning, and more. Poker also builds emotional resilience, discipline, and self-control, which are essential in high-pressure situations.
Because of the similarities between the sport and real-life situations, Poker has become an integral part of management education around the world. The world-famous Massachusetts University of Technology (MUT) in Boston, USA offers a Poker Theory and Analytics course that takes a deeper dive into poker theory and how poker analytics can be used for investment management and trading purposes. Top MBA institutes in India such as IIM Kozhikode also offer poker lessons to help students develop leadership skills.
What makes Poker a sport? A sport, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” So, if we look at the elements of a sport, we can see that in the case of poker, it is a competition between individuals, and in some cases, it is a team competition. It is generally considered to be an entertainment activity, and the players participate in it for their amusement.
There’s no doubt that you need to be skilled at poker, but there’s also a lot of debate about whether you need to be physically active. If you’ve ever played a long game of poker, you’ll know the answer to that question. Poker requires physical effort, concentration, endurance, and fitness. Those who make it to the top of live tournaments put in long days of physical and mental strain.
Poker is also recognised as a sport by the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), which makes it eligible for inclusion in the Olympics. These recognitions are a testament to the fact that poker falls under the legitimate sports category and corrects many myths.
Where is Poker headed in India? Poker is one of the fastest-growing sports in India and is emerging as one of the most promising industries in the country. Several factors have contributed to the growth of the sport in India, and one of them is the increasing popularity of online gaming platforms and the growing awareness of the game.
Thanks to smartphones and internet connectivity, online poker in India has attracted players from all walks of life. The industry has seen an increase in investment and sponsorship deals, showing a growing interest and trust in the sector. PokerBaazi, India’s #1 online poker platform launched in 2014, was one of the first to introduce online poker to a wide audience in India. The platform has grown tremendously, with over 3 million players joining it since its launch.
This is because PokerBaazi offers a safe user experience and hosts some of the biggest online poker tournaments across the nation. Some of these are the Greatest of All Tournaments (GOAT) which this year offered an unheard-of ₹ 7 Crores guaranteed prize pool. The National Poker Series which recently wrapped up offers a whooping 25CR that went up to 32CR. The upcoming marquee poker tournament EndBoss which is just around the corner offers an exhilarating 5CR guaranteed prize pool.
The National Poker Series (NPS) is their most successful project and aims to change the perception of Poker in India. The top 3 players from the NPS 2023 (which lasted for 18 days) will represent India in the NPS Las Vegas.

It's Nice to Have a Friend
Tumblr media
Summary: How you and Wade became best friends.
Pairing: Wade Wilson x slightly Depressed!Reader
Word count: 1.5k
Masterlist
Tumblr media
It smells like sweat, tobacco and cheap alcohol inside the bar. You immediately regret leaving your cozy apartment, wearing those faux leather pants, a black crop top that makes you feel like you're gonna explode out of it and putting makeup on just to end up in a smelly place that has a bathroom that'll probably give you an UTI if you use it.
But it's your best friend's pleading eyes that soften you up, and you know you have been unavailable lately. Always cancelling on her last minute and isolating in your place after your work hours, wallowing in your misery and wondering if that's all life's gonna be now that you're an adult: paying bills and working in a vicious cycle.
"You're not depressed, you're suffering from late capitalism," Maya begins, as she moves flawlessly on her high heels, her tiny little dress fitting perfectly on her. "You just need a drink or ten to forget for a little while."
"Becoming an alcoholic sounds like a nice solution." You roll your eyes, dodging a broken bottle in your sneakers, kicking another aside as you move between all that trash. Maya was such a princess, why she was in love with someone who worked in such a nasty place was very confusing to you.
"You're so funny." Maya said, kissing your cheek, her manicured thumb grazing on the spot her lipstick left a stain, smudging it a little. "He's very important to me, Y/N. And your approval means a lot."
Your heart made that little flip it always does whenever she says something like this. Maybe it's the guilt gnawing at your mind.
"If he makes you happy, you don't really need my approval, Maya." You mumble, following her inside.
The interior is even worse than outside. The bar is full: of big, chunky men. Some are playing pool, others playing poker, others are drinking alone, sulking.
You keep your face straight, wondering which one of those are Maya's new boyfriend. You sigh in relief when she runs to the one who's sweeping the floor, an Indian skinny guy who - thanks to the gods above - doesn't look old enough to be her father this time.
She lets out a girlish squeal as she hugs him, giving him a tight hug. You approach them, alleviated that he seems normal.
"Y/N, this is Dopinder. Dopinder, this is my bestest of the best friends in the whole world." Maya grins, and you force a smile to Dopinder.
"Hello, Miss Y/N, I'm a mercenary apprentice." The young man shakes your hand and your eyes widen in disbelief.
Of fucking course. Jesus Christ, Maya.
"Now, now, my little brown friend. What did I say about introducing yourself like this? Tsk." A voice coming right behind makes you stiff.
You turn to face whoever is invading your personal space, a mean scowl on your face, when your eyes widen just a little bit. The guy behind you stands at least 6'2". It's not his impressive height that has your attention, though.
It's his skin. Scarred all over, as if he had some rare skin disease. You wondered if it was an accident, and how he was before it happened. His grin spreads a little.
"Disgusted, doll face?" He tilts his head to the side, as if challenging you to admit it.
The bitter undertone in his voice doesn't escape you. You are mortified by your own reaction. Maya senses your unease and jumps in:
"Wade, excuse my friend, she never leaves home."
Your cheeks and neck turn pink. Wade thinks it's the cutest thing in the world.
Before you can bite Maya's head off, she hops away with Dopinder, leaving you alone with this guy you don't know. You bite the inside of your cheek, contemplating going back home, but it'll be just another thing for Maya to whine about later.
"Seems like you've been ditched." He smirks, sensing the way you're shying away.
"So it seems." You say bitterly.
"Can I entertain you with my company?" He raises his hairless eyebrow.
You're tempted to just dismiss this guy, but you're already out of the safety of your home. Might as well get drunk now.
Tumblr media
Wade talks at an impressive speed and you almost can't catch up to him. He cracks so many jokes that by the end of your second beer, your face is flushed with laughter.
"So... You don't look like someone who usually goes out to have fun, doll face." He pries.
"No, I don't." You say quietly, a sigh escaping your lips.
"Why, then? Why put the effort in dolling yourself up when we both know you'd rather be watching Gilmore Girls in the comfort of your home?"
"I haven't been a good friend lately." You admit, almost meekly, biting the inside of your cheek - another nasty habit that came with the anxiety.
"What's eating you up alive, doll face?"
His question almost makes you choke. How could you tell him that what has been eating you alive is yourself? Your own thoughts? Your low self esteem and your self depreciation? How do you tell him you don't know what the fuck happened between your high school years and college, why your mind is playing tricks on you?
"Please." Your eyes are blinking with unshed tears.
His gaze softens, and he leans in closer, the soft fabric of his hoodie brushing against your forearm.
"Maya is a sweetheart, but we both know she's not that good of a friend. Not if the only way she can gets you to leave your house is by guilt tripping you into it." He speaks in a hushed tone. "Specially if she drops you the moment she sees her boyfriend."
You look up, your gaze finding his.
"You have such gentle eyes." You blurt out.
He wheezes. Wheezes.
"Wow, let's cut your alcohol, okay? Goddamnit, doll face, I'm the ugliest thing to ever exist since Wes Craven created Freddy Krueger." He mumbles the last part, grabbing a water bottle and twisting the cap for you. "Here. Drink it up. Yes, girl!"
Tumblr media
"Are you sure this won't upset my stomach?" You raise your eyebrow, eating your second chimichanga.
Wade rolls his eyes, chewing on his.
You two are sitting on the curb, eating deep fried burritos and drinking soda. Not how you pictured how your night would turn out to be, but much better than what you expected.
"Listen, doll face, did I ever let you down?"
"I literally met you two hours ago."
"Exactly."
"So... Why entertain me?" You can't help but ask.
Wade pauses. He thought you were the cutest thing in the world when he saw you, all wide eyed and brooding, a little scowl on your gorgeous face.
"You seemed like you needed saving." He decides on telling a half-truth instead.
"Is this your thing? Saving damsels in distress?"
He contemplates it. There was nothing heroic about how he acted, or his job, or his personality, for all that mattered. Did he have an ulterior motive to invite you to drink with him? Maybe. But who didn't have ulterior motives?
"No, doll face. Being a hero is not how I operate."
"Are you a mercenary, too?"
His grin widens. Of course.
"It's a long story, doll face. Maybe I'll tell you someday."
"Hmm, is there gonna be a next time, then?"
"It depends. Do you wanna hang out with my ugly ass mug in the foreseeable future?"
This time, you roll your eyes.
Tumblr media
Wade Wilson got under your skin in a way that no one else did.
It started with the way he cracked jokes at everything.
Then, his unexpected late night visits, where he brought some take out and you'd both eat it together sitting by your balcony.
Then, he came to you wounded, with more tears and bullet holes you were comfortable with – now that you knew about his healing factor and what triggered it, you thought you'd get used to seeing his guts by now.
Spoiler alert: you didn't.
It wasn't until you cried and sobbed on his chest, wondering if you were a failure, externalizing all your insecurities and doubts and fears, that you realized you actually made a friend.
Wade trotting in your place with his ridiculous crocs, a popcorn bowl and a beer on his hand should've give it away.
"I love you." You blurted out, so unexpectedly that he snapped his head to you, a shocked look on his face.
"You... What?"
"You're like my best friend now. And I love you. Deal with it." You repeat, this time more confidently, crossing your arms over your chest, as if daring him to state otherwise.
"Wow, you're in love with me!" Wade squeals like a school girl.
"Wade, that's not-"
"I mean, why wouldn't you? When I'm all that." He points to himself with a chuckle. "So, when did it happen? Did you get lost in my gentle eyes?" He blinks in an affected way.
You sighed. "I take it back. I hate you."
"Suuuure."
"Just press play on the fucking movie." You mumble, plopping next to him on the couch.

'Mary Kom' Poker Scene Has No Redeeming Value!
Tumblr media
There have been several movies made in India that feature poker scenes, and unfortunately, many of them have unrealistic or inaccurate depictions of the game. While some movies have managed to capture the excitement and strategy of poker, others have failed to do justice to the game.
One example of a particularly bad poker scene in Indian cinema can be found in the 2014 movie "Mary Kom". In the film, the protagonist, played by actress Priyanka Chopra, is shown playing a game of poker against a group of men in a shady, underground club. The scene features a number of glaring errors, such as players betting out of turn, not following the correct betting rules, and playing with cards that are clearly marked.
Furthermore, the scene is poorly shot and edited, with choppy camera work and confusing cuts that make it difficult to follow the action. The portrayal of the poker game in "Mary Kom" is unrealistic, inaccurate, and does a disservice to the game of poker.
While there have been other examples of poor poker scenes in Indian cinema, "Mary Kom" stands out as a particularly bad example of how not to portray the game on screen.

Those comments sparked a backlash at the time. But many liberal Jews in Hollywood, media and tech identified with her remarks.
To some non-Jews I talked to, today’s news was just a case of a tribal rooting interest not going our way. “Oh well, you’ll get the next one,” went their vibe. But when a Jewish leader this popular from a state so necessary gets passed over, it becomes more than just a matter of losing a round of identity-politics poker — it touches an existential nerve.
Some Jews have also noted that in choosing Walz, Harris was simply trying to stay away from raising Gaza as an issue. But outside of antisemitic projection, why would it do that? The idea that a candidate would automatically want to talk more about Israel simply because he’s Jewish raises ugly tropes of dual loyalty, or worse.
Wary of seeming killjoyish, some liberal Jewish Americans also sought to find a silver lining — at least now Jews wouldn’t be blamed for administration failures, they said. They cited The Atlantic’s Yair Rosenberg, one of the most eloquent expositors of the double standards applied to Shapiro, who in a recent piece expressed some reservations about what a Shapiro vice presidency would bring.
“Anti-Semitism conceives of Jews as clandestine puppeteers who control the world’s governments and economies, fueling political and social problems,” he wrote. “A Jewish vice president would provide the perfect canvas for these fevered fantasies — a largely ceremonial figure onto whom bigots could nonetheless project all of their conspiracies, casting him as the real power behind the Resolute Desk.”
Rosenberg has forgotten more about the history of antisemitism than most of us will ever know. But this train of thought has always struck me as self-defeating. The response to fears of prejudice can’t be, “Let’s hide the Jews to prevent us from finding out about it.”
A Jewish vice president would have been important not only because it would have signaled the latest progress of one ethnic group in America as thrillingly as Harris’ candidacy does for Americans of Black and Indian heritage, but also because it would have drawn antisemites out from the crevices, shining Louis Brandeis’ disinfecting light brightly upon them.
(That Harris’ husband is Jewish, incidentally, should do little to quell the unease. Jewish affiliations are proof of nothing except the reminder of past justifications. It calls to mind those who several years ago said Taika Waititi’s Nazi comedy Jojo Rabbit couldn’t be antisemitic because Waititi was Jewish. It wasn’t antisemitic. But that wasn’t the reason.)
Walz is a solid candidate with a strong record of speaking out against antisemitism. Just this spring he told Twin Cities PBS that, “I think when Jewish students are telling us they feel unsafe in that, we need to believe them.”
But Walz’s pro-Jewish bona fides don’t mean the decision to put him on the ticket — or the reaction to his appointment — can’t also be shadowed with antisemitism. Both can be true.
And so here liberal Jews again find ourselves, hopelessly marooned between a belief that Democratic policies are fundamentally better for our interests and yet worried we are not welcome in our own home — feeling a gentle nudge that perhaps we might find ourselves more comfortable in another place but unsure, in the end, of where else to go.

The Great S7 Rewrite
An attempt at summarizing the rocky ground on which we some of us stand following this rather epic post yesterday: Prophetic words from Morse in Oracle?
People had so many interesting things to say that I though it would be nice to keep this discussion public for now.
Tumblr media
On the most basic level, Season 7 has two overarching storylines:
Opera Storyline: The one with Morse, Violetta, Ludo,  and the mysterious accidental deaths
Towpath Murders: The one with Morse and Thursday fighting mainly over whether or not Carl Sturgis did it.
Then you have the episodic murders for each episode:
Oracle: The math TV program, Dept. of Latent Potential, women’s lib conference, and  misogynist professors in Oracle
Raga: The Indian restaurant, restaurant critic, gay wrestlers, racist poker game organizing politicians in Raga
Zenana: The coming together of the opera storyline and the towpath murder storyline in Zenana.
If, theoretically, you wanted a do-over for S7, what would you need to consider? Below are some of the issues raised in discussion yesterday:
Bone of Contention #1: Opera Rules
S7 may or may not have been asking us to view its world according to “opera rules.” If it wasn’t, then the storylines were just outrageous. If it was, then they didn’t do an adequate job of either:
Signaling that we needed to see this world through that filter
Making the story robust enough that you didn’t *need* to see the opera references to “get” the storylines. (As Durian pointed out: Ride works even if you don’t realize that it’s Gatsby, but S7 doesn’t work if you don’t realize it’s opera. It doesn’t stand on its own.)
I think actual S7 tried to signal that we were in Opera World (#1) by:
Using theatrical techniques (voiceovers, mise en scene/ tableaux, etc.) to signal that we were in opera world (i.e. heightened reality)
Using opera tropes
Using role reversal with the characters. I think that’s a big reason why the season feels so unsettling overall. Normally Morse is the one doggedly pursuing a hunch based on an obscure clue. This time it’s Thursday. Normally it is Thursday finding out that Morse didn’t check someone’s alibi. This time it’s Morse. Normally Morse and Thursday are calling the shots at the crime scene. This time DeBryn and Strange are having to put them in their place like squabbling children. Etc., etc.
Things in the show are “out of place” as well. (e.g. Thursday is at the early morning crime scene in Oracle instead of Morse. Morse is in Venice instead of Oxford.)
So the questions about Opera Rules are:
Do you keep the idea of Opera Rules for S7?
If you keep Opera Rules, how do you do a better job of signaling them?
If you keep Opera Rules, how do you make the story strong enough that people who don’t understand opera rules will know what’s happening?
Do you just out-and-out tell people about Opera Rules?
Bone of Contention #2: Ludo and Violetta?
I have yet to hear from anyone who really likes Ludo and Violetta. If someone reading this does, I’d be fascinated to hear why. To say that I find them off-putting is being kind. Why is Morse attracted to two such unpleasant people? And not only attracted, but taken in by both of them? Normally Morse is attracted to girl-next-door types (Monica, Joan). Normally Morse has no time for snobs who name-drop and talk about themselves non-stop (Oxford Don stereotype).
For me the disconnect lies not in the fact that he could be taken in. I think Astrid and Fanfic are very right about both Morse’s lack of wisdom when it comes to friendship and love, and well as his “secret” desire to have friends who perhaps share more of his interests. The leap I can’t make is that it would happen with these two specific people. Even taking into account that Morse is behaving “the opposite” of his usual way, I can’t see him being attracted to either of these two personalities.
In the end, like Astrid, I like the *idea* of the Ludo and Violetta storyline but found the way it was played out too incongruous. So what to do? It seems like you can either retool Ludo and Violetta or replace them entirely. Which you choose I think depends on how you want to remake the story and how loyal you are to canon.
My first instinct is to replace them. I find both of them so repugnant, but I do find myself returning repeatedly to an idea that I had when I first watched Oracle, which was that Violetta might actually be more directly based on the Violetta from La Traviata.
She would be a woman from the “other side of the tracks” so-to-speak, but genuinely in love with Morse. You could also use Traviata’s bit where Violetta’s “betrayal” of Alfredo is actually self-sacrifice, etc. I’m not sure about Ludo, but it would definitely need to be someone that Morse would *actually* want to befriend and not someone as obvious as Ludo.
So the questions about Ludo and Violetta are:
Do you keep Ludo and Violetta?
If you keep them, how do you retool them?
If you throw them out, what do you replace them with?
Either way (new or retooled), how do you make Morse’s attraction to them believable?
Either way (new or retooled), do you use existing opera tropes/storylines as a basis for their story?
Bone of Contention #3: Towpath Storyline
It seems that there is pretty much universal agreement on keeping the Towpath Murders as a storyline. Also, there is pretty much unanimous approval for the idea of an earlier and more prominent role for Dorothea in the case. Durian points out that this could also have the side effect of reducing some of the tension between Morse and Thursday.
Disagreement arises over two main elements:
Too many things going on in the storyline
How the conflict between Thursday and Morse is handled.
I’m in agreement on both of these things. In terms of the number of things going on in the storyline you have the whole is it or isn’t it a serial killer, the ESP angle, the flasher thing, the copycat killer, all of the animal imagery and later wolf imagery, the blood drinking, and much, much more. It could work if it all tied together coherently, but it doesn’t—at least for me. It feels like I can sort of see what they were going for, but that they definitely didn’t get there. There needs to be a unifying theme.
With the conflict between Thursday and Morse, my problem is not so much that they have the conflict, but that it comes seemingly out of nowhere. We jump from the reconciliation of Degüello to the petty arguments of Oracle with nothing in-between to explain the change. It’s not that I didn’t find the conflict between these two characters interesting or believable. It’s simply that there was nothing to explain it. Yes, you can say that Morse was becoming more of his own man, but that doesn’t seem adequate to me.
So the questions about the Towpath Storyline are:
What elements would you throw out and what would you keep?
What would make a good unifying theme for the Towpath case?
What is the source of the conflict between Morse and Thursday? What sets it off?
How do we have Ms. Frazil on the case sooner rather than later?
How does Dorothea diminish tension between Thursday and Morse.
Of the arguments between Morse and Thursday, what would you keep and what would you throw out?
Bone of Contention #3: The Episodic Storylines
I find it pretty telling that except for one brief mention, no one has strong feelings about the episodic mystery in Oracle. It definitely had less substance that the one in Raga, in part because it had to leave room for the establishment of the two big overarching stories. Personally, I found the sexism angle (the Women’s Lib Conference and Prof. Blish beating out the others for the spot on the tv show) more compelling than the ESP studies angle.
Durian mentioned that Raga, like the Towpath Murders, has way too much going on (Indian restaurant, Oberon Prince and his ex-wife, the gay wrestlers, the racist poker game, the return of the evil beautician, two stabbed teenagers, etc.) Fanfic raised the interesting idea of making the conflict in Raga more of a family conflict, using the political situation with East and West Pakistan (Bangladesh) as a focus.
So the questions about the Episodic Storylines are:
What elements would you throw out of Oracle and what would you keep?
What elements of Oracle would you change entirely?
What elements would you throw out of Raga and what would you keep?
What elements of Raga would you change entirely? (e.g. changing to internal family conflict)
OK. I'd love to hear thoughts on all of this!
