I know I already made a post about this. But ICWA is LITERALLY being challenged by a white couple that wants to adopt indigenous children to erase their culture and Christianize them. The tribe, whom has a say in who can take their children, is like "Nah, we don't want our youth Christianized like you tride last time"
And the lawyer that's helping the white couple try to overturn ICWA (so that they can erase the cultures of indigenous children) is doing it pro-bono (which means he's not charging the couple anything).
AND that lawyer is a big time lawyer whose clients are usually oil and gas industries. He's literally fighting for indigenous children to be ripped from their tribes and culture so there's less indigenous people to protest big oil destroying their sacred land.

For people who live in the U.S., November can bring to mind a lot of things, and one of them is Thanksgiving. This can be a complicated holiday because while most people just see it as an excuse to get together with friends and family and pig out, we all know that the story of the "First Thanksgiving" is bullshit.
This November, and for as long as it takes, I'm asking you to keep Native American and Alaska Native rights in mind and to fight for them. ICWA, the Indian Child Welfare Act, is at risk.
This act was created to stop cultural genocide. Until the late 1900s, Native American and Alaska Native children were routinely kidnapped and placed in residential schools and white families, where they faced abuse, forced assimilation, and sometimes murder. ICWA was passed in 1978 to stop this by allowing tribes to control the foster and adoption placement of Native American and Alaska Native children.
However, today, the SCOTUS started hearing arguments in a case that could overturn ICWA. This would not only endanger children and allow cultural genocide, but it would endanger tribal sovereignty since it would deny sovereign tribes the rights over the placement of their own children.
This November, this Thanksgiving, and until ICWA has been upheld, I ask you to stand up for the rights of Native Americans and Alaska Natives.
Spread the word about what is happening. Don't let this get swept under the rug. Post about it. Tell your friends and family.
Sign petitions.
Write to representatives.
Reach out to local tribes to see what you can do to help.
Protest.
And if you can afford to do so, donate to Native American and Alaska Native organizations.

The Indian Child Welfare Act.
Youve hopefully been hearing about how the supreme court will hear the case of Brackeen v Haaland where the validity of ICWA will be decided on November 9th.
Here is a helpful breakdown on why it's so important.

The Lakota People's Law Project petition.
.
As a native who didn't qualify for tribal protections because of tribal blood quantum laws, when I was separated from my family I wasnt placed with natives. I was placed with homophobic white christians. I'm nearly 30 now and still trying to reconnect with the culture and family I was cut off from.
ICWA fucking matters. We need to protect it. Kids need their family, they need their people. And right now they need you too.

Basics of the Income Tax Act
Taxes are government-imposed financial charges levied on earnings, commodities, services, activities, or transactions. Here are the basics that you should know about the Income Tax Act.
The word "tax" is derived from the Latin word "taxo." Taxation is the government's primary source of revenue, and it is used to benefit citizens through government policies, regulations, and practices.
The Indian tax system has evolved to meet the government's increasing financial needs. The system is also intended to assist the government in meeting its socioeconomic objectives.
Tax reform is an ongoing process that should be carried out regularly to assess the system for revamping and repairs. The Income Tax Act come into force from 1961.

What is income tax?
Tax is a mandatory financial charge imposed by the government on wages, goods, administrations, exercises, or exchanges. Taxes are the primary sources of revenue for the government, and they are used to benefit the country's general population through government strategies, arrangements, and practices.
Taxes are mentioned in ancient texts such as Manusmurti and the Kautilya Arthashastra. It was first implemented in India in 1860 to combat the 1857 financial crisis. As a result, the income tax act come into force from 1961.
Need for income tax in India
Income tax is a tax on an individual's or entity's earnings. The primary source of revenue for the government to carry out its functions is income tax. Government jobs include defence, law and order, and welfare and development in health, education, rural development, etc.
The government must also pay for its administration. These activities necessitate substantial public funds, which are raised through taxation.
Purpose of taxation
The revenue generated by tax collection is used to fund the development of roads, schools, and hospitals, market regulations, and legal systems, among other things.
Redistribution of resources from the richer to the poorer sections of society
Certain products are taxed to eliminate externalities, such as tobacco taxes to discourage smoking.
Assessment year and previous year as per the Act
According to Section 2(9) of the Income Tax Act of 1961, an assessment year is 12 months beginning on April 1 of each year.
The assessee must file the previous year's income tax return in the assessment year in the assessment year. According to Section 2(34) of the Income Tax Act of 1961, unless the context requires otherwise, the term "previous year" refers to the previous year as defined in Section 3.
According to Section 3 of the Act of 1961, the term "previous year" refers to the fiscal year immediately preceding the assessment year.
For example, if the assessment year 2018-19 begins on April 1, 2018, and ends on March 31, 2019, the previous year would be 2017-18.
Who is a person as per the Act?
Section 2(31) of the Act defines a person. The term 'person' encompasses –
An individual.
A Hindu Undivided Family.
A Company.
A Firm.
Persons or body of individuals’ association, whether incorporated or not;
A local authority
Assessee definition in income tax
An assessee definition in Income Tax is any individual who has earned income or incurred losses and must pay taxes on these to the government in a given assessment year.
Normal assessee
Assessee classifications
A person who is the subject of proceedings under the Income Tax Act, whether or not he owes any tax or other amount;
A person who has suffered loss and has filed a loss return under section 139(3);
A person who must pay an amount of interest, tax, or penalty under the Income Tax Act;
Any person who is entitled to a tax refund under this Act
Assessee representative
A person may not be liable for his income or loss, but he may be responsible for the income or loss of others, such as the agent of a non-resident, the guardian of a minor or a lunatic, etc.
Deemed assessee
In the case of a deceased person who died after making a will, the administrators of the deceased's property are considered assessees.
If a person dies intestate (without leaving a will), the deceased person's eldest son or other legal heirs are considered assessees.
If a minor, lunatic, or idiot has taxable income under the Income Tax Act, their guardian is considered an assessee.
If a non-resident has income in India, anyone acting on his behalf is considered an assessee.
Assessee-in-default
If a person fails to fulfil his statutory obligations, he is considered an assessee-in-default. If an employer pays a salary or a person pays interest, it is their responsibility to deduct TDS and deposit the amount of tax collected in the government treasury.
To conclude:
As discussed, tax is a mandatory charge levied by the government on a person. Income Tax Act provides several provisions for taxpayers based on their needs. The government has provided various forms to pay income tax, depending on whether a person is an individual, HUF, a company, an ordinary resident, a non-ordinary resident, or a non-resident person.

If you’re outside the US and want to help, here are ten things you can do to protect ICWA, Indigenous children, and Tribal Sovereignty as a whole.
Share information about ICWA, Brackeen v Haaland, and Tribal Sovereignty
Share information about rallies, protests, and strategy meetings
Share the donation information of organizations that are fighting to protect ICWA
Donate to those organizations to help them continue to fight
Share the stories of Indigenous adoptees, survivors of residential schools, and the families involved in Brackeen v Haaland
Follow @protectICWA on twitter for live updates
Educate yourself on Tribal Sovereignty, residential schools and the 60s scoop, and cultural genocide as a tool of genocide.
Educate yourself on MMIP/MMIWG2S and familiarize yourself with the tactics those against Tribal Sovereignty use to undermine us.
Learn exactly who is fighting to get rid of ICWA and why. Hint: Gibson Dunn (representing the Brackeens) is the same law firm that supported the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) Now I wonder who benefits from slowly but surely removing Indigenous people from our lands? 🤔
Uplift Indigenous voices that are speaking out and speaking up on ALL platforms. Tell your friends, tell your family, and show up to support us if you can. If ICWA is struck down, we will not be going without a fight. Be prepared.
This linktree has tons of information about ICWA, why it is important, what’s at stake, and what you can do to help. Even simply sharing an article link from here to 10 followers that go on to share to their 10 followers can help!

“Parliament Discusses Enfranchising Indians,” Kingston Whig-Standard. February 2, 1933. Page 1. ---- Premier Bennett Says Educated Indian Should Not Be Allowed to Continue as Ward of Government --- OTTAWA, March 2 - If any Indian wants to live as a white man he must assume the white man's duties and become a citizen of Canada, the Dominion Government is convinced. It is having difficulty, however, in convincing Parliament that the proposed changes in the Indian Act will work well.
Some members protest against forcible enfranchisement of Indians and protests have come from some of the Indians. As Premier Bennets explained the change yesterday, no Indian will be arbitrarily compelled to become a citizen. He proposed to have a board composed of an official of the Indian Department, the county court judge and a representative of the tribe pass upon any application to force the duties of citizenship upon an Indian.
Canada, sald Mr. Bennett, has spent a great deal of money on the Indians. There might be differences of opinion as to whether it was all well spent but some of the Indians had made remarkable progress. Some were highly educated, engaged in business and practised the learned professions. Such men should not be allowed to continue as wards of the Government and evade the responsibilities of citizenship.
Some clauses of the bill will be redrafted to make them more acceptable to the House and further discussion will be given the matter when they are read.
[AL: Very crude settler colonialism in Canada, and I’d love to know who the members of parliament were that protested this change to the Indian Act and were worried about forcible attempts to enfranchise Indigenous people and thus remove their land rights. R. B. Bennett, a dick all around, uses a very similar argument for enfranchisement as he used for refusing welfare: we’ve spent money on you, time to stop suckling (our not very generous) teat.]

The Supreme Court is expected to reach a decision on the attempt up overthrow ICWA in June 2023.
Several states are trying to codify ICWA before it's potentially overturned.
Please reach out to your representatives to express your concern for the protection of ICWA.
(Each state has its own representatives, so you'll have to go in your state legislature website, do a search on which representatives represent you, and email and call them.)
This post has links on more ways you can help.

So my post on Oklahoma making it legal to take indigenous children from their parents without tribal consent is blowing up, and I'm glad people are horrified. But what I need people to know is that this might happen on a national level.
The Supreme Court is debating overturning the Indian Child Welfare Act.
What this act does is give Native American and Alaska Native tribes and nations control over the foster and adoption placement of their children. To overturn it would be to say tribes and nations aren't sovereign, and it would also allow the U.S. government to forcibly assimilate indigenous children into other cultures.
Please:
Spread the word about what is happening.
Read online news articles about this; the more traffic on those articles, the more likely the press is to write more articles.
If there are protests in your area, join them.
If there are indigenous nations or tribes in your area, ask them how you can help.
Donate to indigenous rights organizations like Native American Rights Fund.
Write to your representatives.
If ICWA falls, keep all of the above up. Don't just shrug and think it's over.

Just a reminder that while you're protesting for abortion rights, the government is now going after the Indian Child Welfare Act and is attacking Indigenous sovereignty.
Not only is the United States government trying to take away tribal sovereignty, but they are also trying to force pregnant Indigenous women and two-spirited individuals to give birth and risk having their children stolen from them. This is an act of genocide. This is an act of forced assimilation. This is an act of cultural erasure.
So while you protest for your rights to choose to have an abortion, protest in favor of Indigenous people's sovereignty. Contact your state representatives. Pay attention to your state elections.

It's good to see George Takei put his name and influence to spreading word of the renewed threat to US tribal culture and continuity--and the fundamental importance of ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act). Why it matters. Still.
Thank you, George. Maybe this will land on more people's radar now.
