If I had a nickel for every time that Lucasfilm gave me an aged Harrison Ford character being sad about losing a son to a war and how it was a devastating wedge between him and his wife who was the ravishingly beautiful brunette love of his life, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. Right?

First impressions of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny are very positive. classic Indiana Jones even without Spielberg, easily better than Crystal Skull (i try not to hate but it is objectively the worst of the series), possibly on par with Temple of Doom.
Clever in its cameos and mostly subtle with its references, Indy 5 incorporates elements from previous films in a natural way, while primarily telling its own story. Haters will undoubtedly point out appearances of old friends that we have never heard of before, to which I would counterpoint with the fact that each film is its own complete story, all contained in the life of Henry Jones Jr. There are years between each film, sometimes decades, and we cannot expect to know everyone Indy knows or meet everyone he meets.
James Mangold and his crew do a masterful job at recreating the simple concept of the Indiana Jones films: the grumpy professor goes on a globe-trotting adventure to find an ancient relic, only to find out that it actually works. Mangold sets the scene of an aging Indy who has been through some things since we last saw him, and he's about to go through a lot more.
I'll stop here to avoid spoilers, but my last note is that while I am a huge fan of Steven Spielberg, I think it was the right call to let Mangold take the helm, similar to how Lucas took his hands off of The Empire Strikes Back. Mangold treats the characters and the franchise with a great deal of respect, while making it his own.
And while it goes without saying, John Williams (final) score is magnificent as always. Bravo, Maestro.

There's one thing I'm sure about after watching the last Indiana Jones movie: Indy and Helena often cook together.
And it ends up in a fight almost every time.

I watched Dial of Destiny. This dashing man played an awesome bad guy, which is barely a spoiler because he always plays the bad guys.
I have never actually really watched an Indiana Jones film before, and this one was still amazing for me!

I went to see Indiana Jones earlier and wanted to laugh so badly at Klaber (Boyd’s character) throwing someone out of a helicopter…

a bit of a spoilery thought regarding dial of destiny under the cut:
The way Indy reacts to what happens in the NYC/Hunter University segment of the movie is such a nice and appropriate touch. When confronted with violence and illegal acts he's ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED and first calls the police or runs to the nearest police officer. This man is in no mood whatesoever for illegal activities, adventure, turmoil, guns, shooting people etc......unless ...there's no other way. This is...actually a great example of "show don't tell", tbh.

ok, I lied, I'm not done. under the cut again cause all the spoilers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
I think the reason I loved the movie so much is because it's such a personal Indy story. We know this man up to this point. We've seen all his adventures and we've watched him become this amazing person.
and then we see him kinda grappling with his place in life. He's old. Marion has left him. They are inconsolable over the grief of losing their son. He's lost his dad. and Marcus. and Helena's father. His students don't seem too eager and engaged anymore and he doesn't feel like he belongs anywhere anymore. he doesn't feel like he matters.
so when he does end up back in ancient syracuse and he tells Helena to leave him there. let him die. from his gun shot wound. he has nothing to go back for. he's old news. washed up. let him die. and Helena refuses. tells him that's not his place. and literally drags him back. back to life. and he wakes up and Helena's there. and Teddy. and Sallah. and Sallah's grand kids. and Marion. and there are people that love him still. he still matters. he's not too old. he hasn't lost everyone. people still care about him.
it's his destiny to be there. in his little apartment. with all the people who love him.
that fucked me up. It felt so earnest and heartfelt and like just such a beautiful goodbye to a character that is so beloved. 🥹🥹🥹🥹

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny spoilers below
.
(Look away now)
I loved that Indy got to witness history. He’s technically shaped history on his adventures, but this was his chance to see something he’d only ever read about.
Big “Ariel gets to visit the human world” energy

Helena: So, you and Marion are back together.
Indy: Yes, we are. And it's better than ever!
Helena: I'm happy to hear that.
Indy: And I don't even need any help, if you know what I mean.
Helena: Sometimes I wish I didn't.
Indy: And I didn't know, but the hat really turns her on.
Helena: Jesus Christ, I could definitely have lived without this piece of information.
