231210 K-Hiphop Fest in Asia 2023 [Swagger] - TAIPEI ①
這個巡迴在我看來滿神奇的,出演藝人好像基本上以AMBITION/Daytona + IMJM(AP Alchemy)組成(+AREA)
Tumblr media
youtube
Skinny Brown有唱和PATEKO合作的〈Rainy Day〉(我第一次聽到這首歌是在今年HPF尹辰煐的舞台,所以還以為是他自己的歌 哈XD)
youtube
youtube
youtube
youtube
youtube
youtube
youtube
youtube
最後一首是〈No Cap〉
youtube

𓂃 ₊ ˚ %. ! LOOBII is a boy group consisting of five members, starting from a line-up composed of 7 members, the group used to be a new version of their ❝ sunbae ❞ group BULLE7, but the debut of the seven members failed due the leaking of the info made public by an anonymous source, who apparently was close to the staff members.
To be exact, news surrounding a new boy group under DASK RECORDS were going for months, so when a suspicious table note was revealed, reading the name ‘ CARA7 ‘ fans weren’t surprised, the stage names of the seven members who were going to be part of the group were also revealed. This raised contrast between the Korean and international netizens. Although fans acclaimed the new group and were happy for the new boys, other insulted the company for debuting a group ‘only’ five years later NYX’OR’s debut, who at that time was leading the generation and gaining a very strong fanbase. For this reason, DASK RECORDS decided to stop the preparations for their debut and postpone it, but the group would later disband.
The sudden disbandment of the group before even their official debut was — obviously — not well received by the members, three of them choose to leave the company and only four members were willing to continue to be part of the line-up. At this time the company opted for a 5-members boy group.
It took several months to chairman Kang Hanbin to find the final member of LOOBII, who also became the youngest of the group, the skills of the 17-year-old young boy who wasn’t even a year old trainee was inevitable to see, for this reason he gained immediately the spot in the final group line-up and finally, the group was now a perfect piece of beautiful and talented people.

Secret Weak Spot - TickleTober2023 Day 4 (Weak Spot)
Summary: Diego is known to smile every now and again, but not once has his friends heard him laugh. That all changes when Tristan discovers a little secret of his.
Word Count: 1764
⚠️Warning⚠️: mild swearing
Okay, let's get one thing straight: Diego Cortez is a very stoic young man. He's very introverted and likes to keep to himself a lot. Diego only speaks when he's spoken to, and growing up, he never really had that many friends. After he came to this alternate universe, met Ishani, and reunited with Jason, his life changed for the better. Now, Diego has two families to call his own, and with Ishani and Jason's help, he has an amazing friend group. When he's around them, he smiles more than ever. But there is one thing that he has yet to do around them.
"Has anyone ever seen Diego laugh?" Kain asked suddenly.
The teens were at their usual meet-up spot at their local park, and there was a beat of silence before Kain asked the million-dollar question.
"Seen, no," Ava said, "Heard... uhm, no..."
"Does he even know how to laugh?" Olivia asked, slowly pushing herself on the swing.
The other teens glanced at one another before all eyes were on Jason. The burgundy-haired teen looked between his friends and quirked a brow.
"What?" Jason questioned.
"You're his cousin," Tristan said, "Do you know what makes him laugh?"
Jason hummed in thought as he paced around the swing-set area.
"Unfortunately, no," Jason admitted, "We never really grew up together that much. I'm just grateful to get that chance now, so I wouldn't know."
The other teens sighed in defeat. Tristan glanced over at the black-haired teen in question sitting under a nearby tree. The blonde hummed in thought before a sly grin appeared on his face.
"Tristan, what's with that look?" Ava asked.
"I think I figured out how to get our dear Diego to laugh," Tristan said, "Just watch and learn."
The other teens glanced at one another as they watched Tristan walk over to Diego. The black-haired teen had headphones over his ears, slowly bopping his head to the music playing. When someone tapped his shoulder, Diego looked up and met Tristan's indigo eyes.
"Need something?" Diego asked, sliding off the headphones.
"Nope," Tristan said, sitting next to the teen, "Just thought you'd want some company."
A small smile appeared on the teen's face. About a year ago, Diego wouldn't let anyone sit so close to him without feeling uncomfortable. Still, after getting to know the blonde better, he appreciated his company, though he can be annoying at times.
"So, whatcha listening to?" Tristan asked, scooting closer to Diego's side.
"R&B," Diego said plainly, "Helps me relax."
"Well, why don't you play your music for us?" Tristan suggested, "I brought my speaker so you can hook your phone up to it."
Diego looked at his other friends before shaking his head.
"I wouldn't want to bore you with my music." Diego admitted.
"You wouldn't, honest." Tristan said, poking the teen's side.
Tristan didn't even flinch. Tristan had intentionally poked the teen's side, hoping to get him to jump, but got nothing. Tristan furrowed his brows before poking Diego's side again, right under his rib. Nothing.
"Do you want something, Tristan?" Diego asked, glancing down at the blonde.
"Yeah, I want you to laugh!" Tristan said, rapidly poking the other's sides, "How are you not flinching? Are you not ticklish?"
"Oh, so that's what this is about? I thought you wanted my attention."
Tristan groaned before moving up to Diego's ribs, tickling him for real. Diego inhaled as his muscles tensed, causing Tristan to smile.
"Ah, so you are ticklish," Tristan said, "You're just holding it in."
"A-Am not," Diego said without giggling, "Y-You just suck at tickling."
What Diego said made Tristan pull away and gasp.
"You did not just say that to the world's best tickler!" Tristan proclaimed.
"If you're the world's best, how come I've never heard of you?" Diego said with a smug grin.
Tristan felt his eye twitch.
"You smug little shit..." Tristan growled.
Then, he pounced on Tristan, straddling him on the ground. The other teens watched this and shook their heads fondly.
"Oh, dear," Ava said, "Here we go."
"If anyone can get mi primo to laugh, it's Tristan." Jason chuckled.
Diego looked up at the blonde with a shit-eating grin.
"I know you're ticklish, Diego," Tristan said, "And by you tensing your muscles, I know exactly how to get you giggling."
Tristan grinned before raking his fingers against Diego's sides. The black-haired teen flinched before covering his mouth with one hand and pushing Tristan away with the other.
"What's wrong?" Tristan asked with a chuckle, "Does it tickle?"
"N-No, it d-dohohoesn't." Diego said, letting a giggle slip.
"I'm sorry. Was that a giggle I just heard?"
When Diego shook his head, Tristan started digging between each bone with his middle and pointer finger. This made Diego flinch hard, and deep giggles flooded from his mouth.
"T-Tristahahahan, enohohough!" Diego giggled, still covering his mouth.
"Aha! I knew it!" Tristan proclaimed, "You can't hide anything from Tristan Katsunan!"
Diego giggled in his hand as he squirmed under his friend.
"Aw, c'mon, Diego," Tristan said, grabbing his wrist, "Lemme see that smile!"
When Tristan pried Diego's hand from his mouth, the blonde couldn't help but chuckle at the black-haired teen's smiling and giggling face.
"Well, aren't you an adorable sight for sore eyes?" Tristan mused.
"Enohohohough!" Diego giggled, "Get off mehehehe!"
Tristan hummed before pinning Diego's caught wrist to the ground.
"I don't think so," Tristan said, "While I love hearing your giggles, I want to find a spot that makes you laugh. You do have a spot like that, right~?"
When Tristan asked, he skittered his fingers under Diego's arm, causing his giggles to escalate in volume.
"Nohohoho, I dohohohon't!" Diego giggled, trying to bring his arm down, "Just stop alreheheheady!"
Tristan couldn't help but laugh along to Diego's giggling.
"Yeah, that's a bald-faced lie," Tristan said, "If you just tell me where it is, this could all be over and done with,"
"I told yohohohohou! I don't hahahahave a spot like thahahahat!" Diego giggled.
"What kind of fool do you take me for?"
"Dohohohon't make me answer thahahahahat!"
What Diego said made Tristan's eye twitch.
"So not only are you a smug bastard but also a sassy lil' shit, huh?" Tristan said, "Fine then, what about here?"
Tristan released Diego's wrist before clawing at the black-haired teen's stomach, causing Diego to buck slightly.
"Nahahaha! Stohohohohop!" Deigo cried, his giggles turning into small laughs, "This isn't fuhuhuhuhunny!"
"Oh, yeah? Then why are you laughing so much, huh?" Tristan asked.
Diego tried to push Tristan off him, but the blonde was too strong, and all that giggling was sapping him of his strength.
"Hmm, you seem to be really ticklish on your stomach," Tristan said, "And normally, if someone is ticklish there, then that means..."
When the blonde's fingers started gliding down the sides of the other's stomach, Diego flinched hard before pushing at Tristan's chest.
"Tristan, I swehehear," Diego said, "G-Get off mehehehe!"
"Is someone getting nervous that I found their weak spot?"
Before Diego could protest, deep, adorable laughter spilled from Diego's lips as Tristan tickled his lower back.
"TRISTAHAHAHAHAHAHAN! NOT THEHEHEHERE!" Diego laughed.
"No wonder you never let Ava give you a massage!" Tristan said over Diego's laughter, "This is your secret weak spot, isn't it~?"
Diego bucked and thrashed underneath the blonde, laughing his handsome laugh.
"Who would've thought you had such a cute laugh, Diego?" Tristan mused.
"STAHAHAHAAAAP! THAT'S ENOHOHOHOHOUGH!" Diego cackled, "YOU HAHAHAHAD YOUR FUHUHUHUN! NOHOHOHOHOW, GET OFF MEHEHEHEHEEE!"
"Hmm, I don't think I can. You see, I came here to make you laugh since none of us have heard it before."
Diego laughed loudly as he slammed his legs against the ground.
"YOU ARE SUCH AHAHAHAHAN AHAHAHAHAHASSHOHOHOLE!" Diego cursed, "STAHAHAHAP IHIHIHIT!"
"Oh, I'm an asshole? Is that right, dear Diego?" Tristan asked, "You know, you are in no position to be hurling insults at me 'cause I could make this a lot worse,"
"HOHOHOHOW COULD THIS BE AHAHAHANY WOHOHOHOHORSE!? HEHEHEHEHAHAHAHAAAA!"
"You really wanna know?"
Before Diego could protest any further, Tristan flipped the black-haired teen on his stomach before massaging his thumbs into his lower back, causing Diego to squeal and cackle, pounding his fist into the ground.
"STAHAHAHAHAP! TRISTAN, PLEHEHEHEHASE!" Diego begged, "I CAHAHAHAN'T! HAHAHAHAHAHEHEHEHE!"
"Is that begging I hear?" Tristan questioned.
Diego laughed into the soft, emerald grass, feeling his strength and will to fight back against the blonde's tickles.
"I'll stop on one condition," Tristan began.
"ANYTHIHIHIHIHIHING!" Diego laughed.
"If you promise to laugh more around me and the others, I'll stop tickling you. How does that sound?"
Diego growled through his laughter, wanting to object, but when Tristan hit a sensitive spot, Deigo caved.
"AHHHHHAHAHAHAAAA! ALRIGHT, ALRIHIHIHIHGHT!" Diego cried, "I PROMAHAHAHAHAHA! I PROMIHIHIHIHIHIHISE! NOW STAHAHAHAAAP, PLEASE!"
Tristan laughed before pulling away his hands, leaving Diego to roll over on his back to pant like a dog. The blonde got off the black-haired teen, stood up, and extended a hand to the tickled-out teen. Diego sighed before taking his friend's hand and pulling himself up.
"Nice to know you have a cute laugh, Diego." Tristan said, handing over his friend's fallen headphones.
Diego glared at his friend playfully as he accepted the headphones and put them around his neck. When Diego and Tristan returned to the others, they all smiled warmly.
"Well, this video ain't goin' anywhere." Kain said, waving his phone in the air.
"Your laugh is adorable, Diego!" Ava exclaimed.
"I agree!" Ishani said.
"Now I know how to get you to laugh, primo." Jason chuckled.
Diego glanced at his younger cousin with a dangerous look and a smug grin.
"You say that while you're far more ticklish than me, cabrón." Diego said.
Jason chuckled nervously before taking a step back. The others couldn't help but laugh, and Diego happily joined.
"Hey, Diego, what music were you listening to?" Olivia asked, pointing to the headphones.
"Oh, just some old R&B." Diego said calmly.
"I love R&B!" Ishani said.
"Same here," Kain said, "Mind if we listen to it?"
When the others stared at Diego with pleading eyes, Diego chuckled and nodded. After connecting his phone to Tristan's speaker, the swing-set area was brought back with some late 30s music. Anytime one of the others cracked a joke, Diego would find himself chuckling. Diego glanced around at his friends and smiled. He was so grateful for them. And thanks to Tristan, he learned to laugh more freely around them, and if he ever felt distant, his friends knew how to "poke" him in the right direction.

Last Exit to Playlist
Tumblr media
By Max Gladstone
I wanted to write a road novel. I wanted to write a book about friends grown apart, a book that drew on memories and dreams and journals of bouncing around the country all summer in the back seat of a Plymouth Voyager, a book that understood space and could chew time. So, I needed a mixtape.
I used to do this for every road trip. There was a different art to it when you had to fit your vibe into a forty-five minute A side and a forty-five minute B. Poets know: constraint breeds creativity. You start to understand why radio singles used to have long outros, which lets the DJ choose the right moment to crossfade, and fit the tune to their set. I loved the challenge, and the music would set the tone for the trip. So: why not make a mixtape for a road trip into my own imagination?
This wasn’t a playlist for the process itself, the actual word-by-word writing. In the flow, I drift between ambient albums, chiptunes, soundtracks, games music, jazz. I find tracks that have the right vibe or rhythm and drop them into a giant “writing music” folder, where live ancient OCReMix tracks based on the Morrowind title theme or the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. I do whatever works. But this wasn’t a playlist to write by—this was a playlist to help me think through what I was thinking through. And the road, for me, is songwriter country.
Tumblr media
Good Man - Josh Ritter, The Animal Years
The Animal Years was my first Ritter album. I played it again and again in my bedroom in southeast China late at night as the Iraq War kept on being bad. The Animal Years casts a prophet’s eye on America—clear, visionary, angry—and any three of its songs could have made it to this list, but the album resolves on this note of tired, broke-down grace. Even in its earliest iterations, I knew the book that turned into Last Exit would start after what felt like the end—after the breaking point, when the young kids who thought they could save the world tried, failed, and broke up. None of them have yet reached the promise this song holds out—of rest, of, at least, friendship—but it gave me, and them, something to steer toward.
Tumblr media
Tangled Up in Blue - The Indigo Girls, 1200 Curfews
I’m a Dylan fan, but—something magical happens when you give Dylan songs to someone else. Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower is the iconic version. And the Indigo Girls’ cover of Tangled Up in Blue takes this raw and wry tale of wandering around the country, wondering what the hell happened to your generation, and layers in passion and mourning. In Dylan’s version, the narrator feels resigned—of course it all went down like that, it couldn’t have happened any other way, people are just like that and you have to understand. Here, the narrator cares. She misses what she’s lost, and even though she’s getting through, she’s angry about it. That gave me the right touchstone for Zelda, for my main character: memory and loss, regret and anger, and a worn-down determination.
Tumblr media
Democracy - Leonard Cohen, Live in London
Speaking of prophecies. “It’s coming with the feel that it ain’t exactly real, or it’s real, but it ain’t exactly there.” In this version, gravelly and terrifying, Cohen unsettles. It’s Democracy by way of The Future, and you feel the hope, but you have to concede—it is murder. In earlier recordings, this song can feel triumphant, but by Live in London, you can’t tell whether it’s a prophecy of salvation or of Armageddon. Maybe both.
Tumblr media
Galahad - Josh Ritter, To the Yet Unknowing World
I heard this song for the first time live, and I went home and listened to it a dozen times in the next day. I love that walking-beat drum, like a cane echoing on a marble floor. I love the sly and vicious sense of humor. I love how virtue twists in this song—how nothing’s quite what it sets itself out or up to be. You have to look under the surface. And the King Arthur mythos, as slantwise as we see it here, really speaks to me in an American country/folk/blues setting. It’s the one you read in Steinbeck’s The Acts of King Arthur, or in Tortilla Flat. Kings and knights in a land without knights and kings.
Tumblr media
Tear My Stillhouse Down - Gillian Welch, Revival
Gillian Welch is one of those songwriters who leaves you certain you’ve just heard a song that’s a hundred years old.
Tumblr media
The Hobo Song - Old & In the Way, Old & In the Way
A track about being lost at the end of your part in the American story. Old & In the Way is a tremendous project—Pete Rowan, Jerry Garcia, David Grisman on mandolin, John Kahn, and of course all-star Vassar Clements’s elegant, barn-burning fiddle. I could have a dozen of their songs on this playlist. Speaking of which…
Panama Red - Old & In the Way, Old & In the Way
I’m honestly not sure what this song is doing here as opposed to, say, Land of the Navajo which has more of the cosmic vision I aimed for in Last Exit. Maybe it’s just that Panama Red is a great name. Maybe it’s that cowboy vibe. Maybe the tape needed a moment to breathe.
Tumblr media
Wagon Wheel - Old Crow Medicine Show, O.C.M.S.
You too, perhaps, have heard this one at every bonfire you’ve attended since the mid year-zeroes, and I hope that when you did, you had the fullness of heart to join in and sing. It’s had a lot of play, and it’s probably been used to sell some SUV somewhere, and that’s fine, but for me when I hear this song, it’s late at night, I’m in the middle of the People’s Republic of China, far away from anyone and everything I grew up beside and especially from the Cumberland Gap and Johnson City, Tennessee, and a visiting buddy has just handed me a thumb drive with some music on it, and—well. I worked out the fiddle part that night.
I Hear Them All - Old Crow Medicine Show, O.C.M.S.
The world is a hard place and there are lots of people hurting, and all that pain is a bright and fearful light. We close down in the face of it. David Rawlings, Gillian Welch’s guitarist collaborator, has a great version of this song, too, which could be on this list, but the O.C.M.S. version is the one I heard first.
Tumblr media
Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohn, Marc Cohn
Look, okay, look. Just…look.
Silver Thunderbird - Marc Cohn, Marc Cohn
You’ll have noticed a lot of doubled artists on this track list, and to be honest, some of that’s because I took out the album looking for one song, saw the other, and couldn’t resist adding it. In this case, I couldn’t pull out the Mark Cohn album without adding Walking in Memphis—”She said/ Tell me are you a Christian child?/ And I said ‘Ma’am I am tonight’”—but Silver Thunderbird was why I got the album out in the first place. It’s a haunting, brief song about being a kid, about your parents, about shoes you can’t quite grow into—and about a car. I’ve never been a Car Person, and maybe because I’m not, I don’t have the contempt familiarity can breed. For me, a few cars have a mythic heft. The Thunderbird is one, and so’s the Dodge Challenger, which features in Last Exit. I can’t say quite what it is about the Challenger. It’s a haunting design. It’s the car that idles at the corner, as if waiting for something. It’s the car that the man in the hat drives when he comes to town.
Tumblr media
Pancho and Lefty - Townes Van Zandt
I could write whole essays on Townes Van Zandt. He’s a tradition all to himself. Every one of his songs is a vision.
Tumblr media
Across the Great Divide - Nanci Griffith, Other Voices, Other Rooms
It’s hard to write this entry now—I started and stopped and started and stopped again—because I haven’t come to terms with Nanci Griffith’s passing. Artists exist in strange ways. A writer you’ve never met remains as alive to you in their books as they ever were. We put on an album, and the ghosts sing to us. John M. Ford once wrote: the train stops, but the line goes on.
Tumblr media
The Queen and the Soldier - Suzanne Vega, Suzanne Vega
In college, I was fortunate to take a class from John Crowley, and in an offhand way as he was trying to make another point in a lecture, he touched on the way certain words gather and hold power—ring, or cup, or sword. I’ve often wished I could go back in time and replay those five minutes of lecture—I knew I was hearing something important, but trying to hold it in my mind felt like trying to hold a river. This song is about that power, I think, and it communicates in those words—the dream we have of the world, and the distance between that dream and the world. There’s something young about the magic of those words. For a kid, the dream that a word like sword suggests can be clear and bright, even (especially?) because of its distance from the world we know. Do we ever look for the truth behind the dream? What happens when we do? Can we bear to leave the old world behind? Even as it strangles us?
Tumblr media
Jack’s Crow - John Gorka, Jack’s Crows
This is a drifting dream-song for me, not so much the storm as the darkening on the horizon, that feeling in the air before things change. It’s autumn: not as the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but as a season of coming darkness, as a season of threat and prophecy. For me this is a song for long stretches of road, for weeds and roadside gravel. It’s magic seeping out of the shadows. Calling us.
I’m from New Jersey - John Gorka, Jack’s Crows
To be honest, I like to end on a note of contrast. You can’t stay in grim prophecy all the time. I’m not from New Jersey originally, but my dad is, and we did some growing up in Ohio, so a line like—”I’m from New Jersey/it’s like Ohio/but even more so/imagine that”—I can’t resist it. But listening to it again now, I’m struck by the opening and closing line, which is more true than I expected to Last Exit, in its totality: “I’m from New Jersey/I don’t expect too much/If the world ended today/I would adjust.” The end of the world is coming. So: what can we do?
This isn’t the only playlist I could have made for this book—entire Mary Gauthier albums should be on here, for example, and Anais Mitchell’s Young Man in America, and there’s no Alabama 3 (which I think we’re now required to call A3 in the States for trademark reasons?) only because I was listening to them a lot at the time and I wasn’t sure how I felt about including a British project even if they have such intense Americana energy on projects like M.O.R. Tenacious D’s The Road belongs on here for pure contrast and humor purposes—I can imagine more than one character in Last Exit saying, “Why can’t I stay in one place for more than two days? Why??”
The music I wrote to, in the end, was silence, and the Mad Max: Fury Road soundtrack, and Makaya McCraven, and, in revision, the truly wild The Comet Is Coming album called Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery. But as a mission statement, as a call to adventure, as a map—to the thematic territory, or just to the wall I meant to bash my head against—it did the job. It mapped a few of the cracks in the world. It gave me a cowboy and a car and it gave me loss, and absent friends.
And it left me looking for a tape deck.

2023 gigs.
A list rather than a review but there will be the odd descriptive comment when warranted. The list will include accompanying fine dining.
13.1 Harry Hill. New Theatre, 'Boro. Nuts. Funny af, but nuts.
23.1 Frank Turner, Lottery Winners, Wildwood Buoys. O2 Academy, Leicester. The Marquis Wellington.
26.1 Francis of Delirium, Sloe Noon, Collars. Bedford Esquires. McDs. Great gig. 1st support, quirky (the drummer was also the guitarist), 2nd were superb, reminded me of Slothrust and FoD are always excellent.
Tumblr media
2.2 Sprints, Langkamer, Eades. Bedford Esquires. Herd. Amazing, just brilliant. Missed Eades (fucked off 'bout that), Langkamer got me well in the mood and Sprints nailed it. Burger at Herd was one of the best I have ever eaten. Top night.
14.2 Mogwai, Brainiac. Rock City. Horn in the Hand. Brainiac are odd, Mogwai were fucking loud. HitH always delivers when it comes to burgers.
17.2 Doors Alive. Roadmender. Oriental Garden. Great tribute act. Great Chinese meal.
18.2 Dr. Feelgood, Dois Padres. Bedford Esquires. McDs. So glad I made the effort.
22.2 Hotel Lux, Average Life Complaints, The Barratts. The Craufurd Arms, MK. 81 The Original Diner. Three good bands. ALC stood out, HL were so interesting to watch. Burger was just 'good'.
Tumblr media
25.2 Total Stone Roses, Oaysis. Met Lounge 'Boro. The College Arms. decent tributes, decent pub-grub katsu curry.
28.2 Young Fathers, Callum Easter. O2 Academy Leeds. Almost Famous. Wow. What a midweek trek, what a gig! YF did not disappoint and CE was intriguing - he played with YF also. And, the best burger I have EVER eaten. EVER.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
3.3 Emily Breeze, Andrea Kenny. The Donkey, Leicester. Heritage India. EB was fabulous. The restaurant front of house thought I was a food critic, I am sure of it.
5.3 Grade 2, Clobber, Kings of Pigs. Voodoo Lounge, Stamford. McDs. Sunday gig, G2 were really good.
10.3 Suede, Desperate Journalists. Rock City. Horn in the Hand. DJ were fucking excellent. Also, saw great singer in the Lilly Langtrees pub after the gig....see 06.07 entry.

14.3 Slow Readers Club, Andrew Cushin. Lafayette, King's Cross. Cut and Grind. I loved this gig. SRC in a small venue - place was bouncing. Katsu chicken burger was good.
16.3 Mike Wozniak. The Core at Corby Cube. Nando's. Wonderful, laugh out loud ramblings.
21.3 Death Cab for Cutie, Slow Pulp. O2 Institute, Brum. Manzils. SP stole the show, DCFC were 'alright'. Great veg madras but with fucking mushrooms.
22.3 The Orielles, Pale Blue Eyes. MASH, Cambridge. Butch Annie's. Brilliant gig. TO were a different band live and PBE will play arenas one day, I'm sure of it. Marvellous burger, marvellous gaff.

28.3 Anna B. Savage. Village Underground. McDs.
30.3 Jadu Heart, Gglum. Assembly Rooms, Islington. MEATLiquor, GDK. Gglum stole the show. She rocked, actually. I had a balcony ticket but snuck downstairs during a technical hitch with JH's kit; the upstairs bar ran out of beer (wtf?) so I went in search of booze only to find I could walk into the main hall unchallenged! Great burger followed by a really great kebab. 04.04 Gretel Hänlyn, Mary in the Junkyard. The Moth Club. McDs. Great little venue and MitJ were excellent (brilliant drumming and drummer) and GH was fantastic. No overground afterwards but jumped in an Uber to Finsbury Park with two fellas who'd been to the gig #lifesavers
Tumblr media
11.04 Big Thief. Hammersmith Apollo. Chicago Grill. I found BT disjointed and out of tune at first, came good toward the end. Burger was fucking huge and beat me. Plus I had to use cutlery to eat it.
14.04 Joe Rooney., A Celebration of Father Ted. The Key Theatre, Peterborough. Interesting evening with the chap that was in one episode of Father Ted as Father Damo. 18.04 Waxahatchee, Indigo Sparks. Earth. GDK. No overground, walked there and back and still made GDK and caught the 23.00 train. 20.04 Fenne Lily, Naima Bock. Islington Assembly hall. GDK. Last minute gig (thanks to ReTickin') and I am glad I made the effort FL and her band (esp. the guitarist) was most impressive - great live sound. 21.04 Lemondaze, Treeboy & Arc. Last minute ReTickin' gig and I am very glad I made the effort. Lamb Shawarma was amazing. 10.06 Diane Cluck, Johanna Warren. Cafe OTO, Dalston. Only went to see JH and it was a performance workshop, so no singing. Not what I expected.
16.06 Arctic Monkeys, The Hives, The Mysterines. Emirates Stadium. 22.06 The Sherlocks. Bedford Esquires. Herd. Last minute gig 'cos Dara O Briain was cancelled due to flooding. TS were cracking.
26.06 Indigo de Souza, Rosie Alena. Village Underground. Fat Hippo, Shoreditch. IdS, and her band, flippin' rocked. I like it when the live performance is a real step up from studio. FH was also cracking.
Tumblr media
06.07 Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Girl Band. Craufurd Arms. GB were excellent - saw the guitarist/lead singer, Georgie, after the Suede gig 10.03 - chatting after their set, she remembered me! GCWCF lost the plot with the chatting, rowdy audience...it was embarrassing.
07.07 Breanna Barbara, Memory of Speke. Moth Club. Burke's Warehouse. BB was so good, fantastic. MoS were very good. Burger & chips were excellent.
19.09 My Baby. MK11 MB were really good value - rock enthused dance music and the lead singer's voice is exemplary.
Tumblr media
22.08 Boygenius, Ethal Cain. Piece Hall, Halifax. 242 mile round trip was just about worth it. Both acts were OK. Venue is special, though.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
28.08 Karen Jonas. Great Easton Village Hall. 29/08 Future Islands. Cambridge Corn Exchange. Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. FI are so good live. Cajun chicken burger was fine.
05.09 Samia, Art School Girlfriend. Kentish Town Forum. One of the best gigs this year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
23.09 Flock of Seagulls, Enjoyable Listens. Bedford Esquires. Brewhouse & Kitchen. FoS were good value, EL were excellent as always and the burger was fine.
26.09 The National. Ally Pally. Views from the venue were spectacular.
Tumblr media
04.10 Sprints. Scala. Ballache getting to the gig 'cos of the train strike, but well worth it. Aftershow gathering at The Lexington warranted an overnight stay!
05.10 Hard-Fi, Tom A. Smith. The Junction. Impressed with HF, even more impressed with TAS and his band.
06.10 The Undertones, Tom Robinson Band. The Junction. TRB were amazing. He is a great entertainer and his guitarist was superb.
18.10 Treeboy & Arc, Bo Gritz. The Moth Club. T&A are seriously good live.
Tumblr media
23.10 Lande Hekt, Charley Stone's Actual Band. The Lexington. 26.10 Yumi and the Weather, Sunny Gym. The Craufurd Arms. Only caught the final song from SG but it was excellent. YatW were banging.
30.10 Cash Savage and the Last Drinks, James P. Honey. The Lexington. CSatLD were amazing. The violinist pulled out one of the best live solos of any instrument I have even witnessed.
Tumblr media
08.11 Deadletter, The Joy Hotel. The Craufurd Arms. TJH were bloody good...including bass, 5 guitars! D were superb - great front man.
09.11 Nothing But Thieves. World Resorts Arena, Brum (old NEC). £7.50 a fucking pint. NBT is about right.
12.11 This Is The Kit, Gina Birch. The Glee Club, Brum.
15.11 The Murder Capital. Electric Ballroom. Mental gig. Haven't seena mosh pit like it since the 80s. Thoroughly enjoyed this gig.
Tumblr media
16.11 Bleach Lab, Wings of Desire. Scala. WoD were right down my street and delivered - a nice surprise as I'd not heard of them before. One of those gigs where support > headliner.
23.11 Bdrmm, Damefrisor. Bedford Esquires. I flipping enjoyed this. B drummer cracked open a bottle of beer with the end of his drumstick which was the coolest thing I have ever seen.
03.12 The Rural Alberta Advantage, Zoon. Lafayette. I was not in the mood for travelling down to this on a Monday night. However, it was well worth it. RAA were every bit as 9, or so, years ago when I first saw them.
04.12 Coach Party, Bedroom High Club, House of Women. O'Meara. A free gig put on by Beavertown brewery and I'd have gladly paid. Each band were great. BHC were brand new to me and were the pick of a fantastic bunch. I will definitely catch all 3 live again.

pop report #3 (1/21/23)
only some of our stars are problematic, but all of them are a little upset
It’s a new reshuffle for our rotation of shadowy, spacey hits, many of them familiar company by now.
“Anti-Hero” leads the pack as usual, followed by “Kill Bill”, “Unholy”, “I’m Good (Blue)”, “Creepin”, “Die for You”, “Rich Flex”, “As It Was”, “Bad Habit”, and “Something in the Orange” – each one a good song of some sort, each one deliberately on the downbeat side. “Orange”, by Zach Bryan, is striking. The title metaphor (the vermillion of a new-dawn sun) feels overstated as it goes on. But Bryan wrenches the lyric out of his throat with such a gritty, wounded passion that you’re wrapped up in the drama of the scenario even as the author doesn’t lay it out detail for detail. It’s the only song of the ten that doesn’t happily submit to the prefab trends of our time. America’s top-selling songs sound fake and spectacular.
The superstars lingering in our charts share an underdog edge. SZA toils in the shadow of Rihanna and Beyoncé. SOS may not be her breakout among Black women making artful statements in a vague genre often pigeonholed as “R&B”. Not unlike her labelmate Kendrick Lamar, she’s boldly inventive, but doesn’t foreground her ethereality the way Solange, Janelle Monae or Charlotte Adigéry do. Her music is more street and soulful, but its edge is tempered; lyrically, melodically and sonically it prefers a suggestive path, its strength its insouciance.
Taylor Swift could buy Luxemborg, but I think she’s underrated too, as the nitpicky response to Midnights demonstrates. No pop star resembles Hillary Clinton more – her deficiencies are her caution, and the pushy sincerity with which she undermines her best ideas. I admire aspects of Midnights others can’t agree on. I think Jack Antonoff’s production is fun, its overall tone of luminous gloom offset by cute little sonic surprises in the arrangements. It’s been accused of sounding soullessly synthetic, but in fact the technology purposefully emulates cheapness. And  her choice to curse in nearly every song, while contrived (and as such weirdly enjoyable), has the same insufficient-progress impact as, say, a president voicing support for gay marriage in 2012.
You probably haven’t guessed that I’m running down Billboard’s Top 10 albums, because I didn’t tell you, but Metro Boomin’s album follows at #3. I’m not that familiar with his work, but he does have friends – John Legend, the ever-resilient Chris Brown, Travis Scott, Young Thug, the late Takeoff, A$AP Rocky, and Lakeith Stanfield, who starred in the trailer, to name seven. His music emanates an indigo mood, often darkly attractive in arrangement and tune. And the uniformly macho-minded contributors explore angles of their own angst that at times yield uniquely compelling results. Still, you can imagine falling asleep to this album, and the resulting dreams wouldn’t be very much fun.
I struggle with Drake, as I’ve said, because I’m just not convinced his instincts are sharp enough for great art. He makes perfect sense when he finds a terrific hook (“Best I Ever Had”) or groove (“Passionfruit”). But as befits a performer who made his name (well, real name) on the charmingly soapy Degrassi: the Next Generation, some of his public acts have felt not just forced but unselfaware. And when he tries to catapult off his commercial primacy into playing at swagger, you simply don’t believe him – you get annoyed. That the album is reported to be quite bitchy about the artists’ ex-girlfriends has kept from me from exploring it, but at the same time it’s a valid resistance for any listener to have. Judging from its tenacity on the charts, this doesn’t seem to be too widespread a problem.
It’s conceivable that a collective American fatigue, a weariness at having been roughed by current events, explains the evidently en vogue wave of tonally sullen and slightly ominous-sounding bangers. Bad Bunny has the aura of a Casanova-rapscallion hybrid, but like Post Malone, his music is luxuriously atmospheric (at least by the evidence of his most recent album, Un Verano Sin Ti). The pulse of his beats is dependable and insistent, but his tracks are never monotonous; they’re consistently playful even when moroseness perfumes the proceedings. My girlfriend says she admires Bad Bunny’s work because “he’s fuckin’ sexy and I love his voice”; she emphasizes, though, that songs from the last record hung around in her head more than these seem to, with an air of disappointment in her inflection.
If Drake is skirting the problematic with relative impunity, who knows what you call Morgan Wallen’s 105th week on the chart. His album, conveniently titled Dangerous: the Double Album, is still selling in the long wake of Wallen’s collision with the sort of controversy that permanently stains you. Taken for what it was*, without proselytizing, his offense seems even more unthinking and less racially targeted than Elvis Costello’s 1979 barstool faux-pas, for which EC is still living off the hook. But it’s hard not to see Wallen’s persistent sales as reflecting the wokeness-contrarian impulse coursing through society.
It doesn’t help that Wallen’s general vibe is smug and shallow; he prefers to plow past deeper emotions. Most country pop works the way disco works – the way it sounds is sometimes silly, but the tone and tempo can be enough of a kick to counteract that. But it rarely feels as commanding or texturally interesting as whatever Zach Bryan is up to. The very title of his album, American Heartbreak, reflects his interest in humanity’s ragged diversity. A more civilized-sounding Tyler Childers, Bryan elevates every lyric with his plaintive, shopworn delivery. But even if he sang as insincerely as Wallen, or as weakly as, say, Kris Kristofferson, you’d still instantly sense that those lyrics are worth returning to.
Another hip-hop artist whose vibe is generically masculine, Lil Baby favors producers similar to Metro Boomin, those inclined to mine the line between dreamy and dreary. Baby has a strangely captivating flow – tuneful, viscous and casual across the consonants. And while his lyrics don’t skimp on the usual hardnosed hustler act, that flow is full of feelings unsuffocated by his swagger. That said, there’s a repetitiveness to this music that starts to feel oppressive over 23 tracks, and it makes you wonder how much fun the artist is having.
By contrast, YoungBoy Never Broke Again (good name – manifest that shit) doesn’t want you to relax. His music is chaotic, assertive, taut with tension. These boisterous collages of sound are creative enough to stay riveting, even when the cumulative effect is claustrophobic or unpleasant. YB N B A raps, through a sizzling autotune, even more loosely and woundedly than Lil Baby. There’s almost always something interesting going on, and 19 songs in 39 minutes isn’t going to try anyone’s patience. But once again it’s a seemingly-not-so-lovable-guy unloading his problems line by line without repaying your attention with hooks.
T-Swift’s ex Harry ‘Will Never Go Out of’ Styles is another multimillionaire I’ll defend as awaiting some due. Savvy beams off his every move, and he’s turned himself into a true fashion icon. But I suspect that his reserved demeanor, plus the usual indulgent hate boy bands attract like bug zappers, has compelled certain people to assume there’s less behind those bedroom eyes than the sleek intelligence Harry’s House exhibits. Truly, he should not be allowed to wax about cinema without a set of notecards, but the pop he’s bringing these days isn’t exactly lacking scope and vision. Like the best directors, Harry is an earth angel fascinated by the sweet nuance of human behavior, and the thrill of trying to evoke it.
I’ve long appreciated that modern pop seems to have shaken off a certain kitschy artifice. The prevailing aural trends, forged in a world of limitless technology, favor heady and challenging atmospherics. Thus the corniest hits are at least pacifying, and the best profound and genuinely transportive. But evolved as the status quo feels, I’m feeling a hunger pang for the shock of the new – for a disorienting shake of the frame. Or, as with “Running Up That Hill”’s fluke success, a resurgence of the old in service of the same surprise.
*if I have it right, an inebriated Wallen casually refers to one of his (white) friends with the n-word

Brown said in July 2021, while working on the album, that he wanted to make some “really endearing music” that “talk to women’s soul”.[2] In February 2022, he stated on his Instagram account that the album would contain some pure R&B material. He later said that on some of the album’s songs he wanted to depict “a different type of love mixed with heartbreak”.Breezy’s artwork was revealed on May 18, 2022.[4]
The cover art consists of a black and white picture of the back of Brown’s head with the album’s title shaved into his hair.[5] The haircut was done by American artist and barber Rob the Original.[6][7] ccording to the barber, the haircut of the album’s cover was designed by Brown and himself, and was inspired by works of Italian artist and barber Nto Hair Mugen.[8] Shawn Grant of The Source found the artwork to be “minimal” compared to those of Brown’s latest projects. On November 4, 2019, Brown posted three videos that showed snippets from songs that he recently worked on, supposedly called “Get Naked”, “Hit My Line” and “Stressed”.
On December 22, 2019, Brown announced that he was working on new material for his next album, posting an Instagram story where he wrote “2020, what do you think my 10th album is going to be called?”.[10] A couple months following the release of his collaborative mixtape with Young Thug, Slime & B, on July 9, 2020, he announced that the name of his tenth album would be Breezy, making a reference to his stage nickname.[11] On October 22, 2020 he shared through his social media a snippet of a song supposedly called “On Some New Shit”, in a video that showed him working and recording the song in a hotel room in London, also suggesting the possiblility of releasing the album in 2021 in the video’s caption.[12] In November, Brown created an OnlyFans account, where he posted snippets from the songs “Sleep at Night” and “Warm Embarce”, during his travel in Tulum, Mexico.[13]
Two days before Christmas 2020, Brown posted on his Instagram account a picture that showed a pen and a piece of paper, captioning it with “My heart on this pen and pad. A SIDE B SIDE. A SIDE B SIDE. Hope y'all f**k with my frequency. No time soon", hinting the possibility of Breezy being his third consecutive double-album, following Heartbreak on a Full Moon and Indigo.[14] On January 8, 2021 Forbes published an article that listed Breezy among the most anticipated R&B albums of 2021.[15] In June 2021 he said that he was not in a rush to release his new album, by posting an Instagram story where he wrote "I ain't dropping my album until I'm ready. NOTE: The official Indigo Music instagram account deleted/archived the original April 21st, 2017 post announcing this as well as anything they may have posted before Yang Hongwon's "In The Morning" release. This is the only post I can find with a screenshot of the original instagram post.
