Borneo and indeed Indonesia, is home to many species of large insects. I once visited the top of a hill where there was a communications tower with flashing lights. It attracted many HUGE bugs! They gave me the willies but I think I hid it ok. There is something awe inspiring about these insects. They’re big enough so you can imagine them growing to human size, (I watched too many Japanese monster tv shows in the late 60s 🙀). One of the problems of photographing the macaques of Sulawesi is that they often get too close for long lenses. The black volcanic sand gets into everything, making changing lenses halfway through a real issue. This Kindhearted Woman Took Care of This Orphaned Kloss Gibbon. She calls herself a monkey mamma but, if we are being picky about facts, she was actually an ape mamma. Gibbons are primates in the ape family and are known as “lesser apes” to differentiate them from the great apes like orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees. From The Malaysia Animal Association: “Borneo's most underappreciated animal, while everyone knows about the plight of the orangutan few know or care that the Banteng is actually much closer to extinction. Unfortunately for the Banteng it looks similar to a domestic cows hard to gain the needed attention. The other problem it faces is it's difficult to promote conservation for a species that is never seen. To give some perspective the orangutans population in Borneo is over 10,000 while the Banteng number a around 400. This is not evident in the amount of funding that is allocated to each species for conservation projects.
