The one word I can't quite make out here is the coffee what in the bottom of the cup. In context it's almost definitely referring to coffee grounds but the best I can make out hearing there is "kaffikvörn", or a coffee grinder. Not sure if they're using some word I'm unfamiliar with or what.

Translation notes

This song makes me think of a warped version of Tom Lehrer's "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" and I love it for it.

They really are specifically talking about murdering seagulls, not just killing them: the word myrða, murder, is only usually used for the murder of humans.

The lyrics mention Vonarstræti and Tjörnin; Tjörnin is "The Pond", a large pond in downtown Reykjavík, while Vonarstræti is a street close to it. It's common, or at least used to be, to take small children to Tjörnin to feed the population of ducks and swans that live there, although in recent years people have been implored to stop this because bread isn't actually healthy for them and the practice also attracted a lot of seagulls.

My best guess as to the "island where Caprio was ruler" is that it's referring to Leonardo DiCaprio, who apparently bought a private island in 2009. However, I'm actually fudging a little with that translation, because the term used in the original is lögráða, or being a legal adult. It doesn't really make any sense to speak of the island where Caprio was a legal adult, and the word lögráða (literally "legal rule") could easily be construed as referring to being a ruler, so I'm just going to guess that's what they're going for, even though to my knowledge that's not actually a 'correct' use of the term. If you actually know exactly what they're talking about and it all makes sense, please tell me.

Trying to learn a bit about the history of the dotted fé rune ᚡ, usually transliterated v although it should be f̈ by Barnes’ system (can’t really format that so as to be properly readable though).

I always thought it would have emerged when the semivowel u̯ (pronounced [w], but which we write “v,” like Valhǫll which was pronounced like “Waal-hawl”) became a proper consonant /v/ and merged with the voiced allophone of /f/ (which was [v]). That is, gefa becomes geva (modern Sw/Nw giva).

It turns out this is incorrect; dotted ᚡ already occurs for voiced allophones of /f/ while ᚢ is still being used for what we write “v.”

We can see this on my new favorite inscription, from Öland, Sweden:

Öl 54:

[hævðen : þe ÷ mera ÷ mik ÷ givit : þt ÷ u^æret ÷ bætar ÷ skivit] hæfðen þe mera mik gifet þat været bætr skrifit ‘Had they paid me more it would be better written.’

The bolded letters in the italicized part, which is my attempt at the language of the carver, *would eventually* have the same sound, but the carver keeps them separate even while using ᚡ v to write the voiced /f/. This could mean that what we’re writing “v” still sounded like “w” at the time, or perhaps the carver was influenced by Latin literacy and actual spelling tradition. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that ᚡ wasn’t actually simply a “v rune” but rather “f rune, but voiced.”

Some possible counterevidence comes from runic inscriptions written in Latin, but I would argue that there is a better explanation than it being counterevidence. Småland 145 has “ave Maria” written in runes: ᛆ:ᚡᛂ:ᛘᛆ:ᚱᛁᛆ a:ve:ma:ria, and later in the same inscription is ᚡᛅᚿᛐᚱᛁᛋ væNtris ventris. Based on this I would hypothesize that to speakers of Norse in this area, Latin v was pronounced with a voiced [v] sound identical to the voiced allophone of their own /f/, while Norse v was in fact still u̯  [w]. Therefore, ᚢ was suitable for writing Norse v, but not Latin v. As an aside, Sm 145 also has something I can’t remember ever seeing before, a dotted ᚱ for /ʀ/ (and ᛦ for /y(:)/). There’s a picture on page 56 of this PDF.

Småland 4 (p.2), on the other hand, has a clear example of ᚡ for Norse v: ᚠᛁᚿᚡᛁᚦᛁᚱ finviþir Finnviðr (a personal name). One might suggest that this is simply a later inscription but without another way to date it that’s a circular argument. It also looks pretty clearly less professional than the others (we can be certain the first one I mentioned was professional, because he was paid for it, if poorly) so we shouldn’t be surprised at it being less systematized, but I don’t think we can say anything definitive.

In Västergötland they use it for both voiced /f/ and for v. This might be a place where my original supposition actually holds: that both of these sounds were pronounced [v]. This is also the case in Gotland although that’s less interesting to me because most of those inscriptions are from much later, when we already know that a distinct phoneme /v/ was fully developed.

Other than Gotland, this all seems to belong to the 13th century, though establishing a relative chonology is probably impossible. I’m not done researching though, and I haven’t looked closely at either Denmark or Norway yet. But for now I think the most likely situation for the origin of this rune is that highly professional, possibly formally educated runecarvers from southeast Sweden systematized their orthography to a very precise degree (such as can be seen on Sm 145) and that some of these developments were found to be especially useful by others in surrounding areas as their language developed.
