⁉️#qotd: how many chances do you give an author if you’re unimpressed with your first experience of their writing? • Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler is featured in our March “shakespeare” #inkcrate. DM for inquiries! Rating: 🐲🐲🐲/5 • 📚A of JAF’s (insta)review: Vinegar Girl is a retelling of Taming of the Shrew by Anne Tyler. It's a fun, quick read which my deeply feminist mind just could not fall entirely in love with. Now, don't get me wrong, there was a good mix of humour and romance in the book and I will admit I do not remember much of the source material to really compare and contrast, and yet... There was something so disheartening about seeing our protagonist/Shrew/vinegar girl Kate go from being so strong and independent to waxing poetic about how men have it hard too. I am a sucker for romantic moments, and vehemently believe you can be strong/independent AND in love/in a relationship/vulnerable but there seemed to be no chemistry whatsoever between Kate and Pyotr which made the idea of them actually falling in love seem far-fetched. I can pinpoint one, maybe two moments where I understood her shift. But considering the length of the book, everything seemed to happen too quickly. Overall, Vinegar Girl is a good retelling, a nice light read for the beach or lounging in the park on a nice sunny day. I wanted to love this book. It checked all the right boxes for me: diversity (in author and main character and setting), fantasy/magic, inspired by mythology, gorgeous cover. Unfortunately, I just could not get into it. I don’t know if it was timing or the story or the character, but I found myself looking for other books to read and mentally groaning every time I saw it judging me in its partially read state. Maybe I’ll pick it up again and love it. But till then. And it was simply amazing. It's such a sad book, and something really unexpected and unusual.
