Autumn
What has become of the birds who sang so lovely in the summer limbs? I would hear them then, from time to time; and then all went quiet on a whim. They fall silent, those birds, in autumn.
What has become of the flowers which stood swaying in the fragrant runs? I look over the land, but 'tis in vain, for my eyes fall upon not a one. They wither, those flowers, in autumn.
(poem by Per Sivle, 1877, from "Utvalgte dikt" // translated from Norwegian by me)
"Haust" (Original)

More on Lussi:
“Lussi, otherwise known as Lussekäringen (the Lussi witch) or Lussegubben (Lussi man), was an evil entity. She often took the form of a woman who came riding through the skies with her companions called lussifreda. She was one of the evil spirits who would lurk around in the night and take naughty children away through the chimneys, or punish those who had not completed their jól preparation.”
“Lussi, pale-faced and terrible, would come to check that everything was ready for Yule – the spinning and the baking, primarily. If this work was not satisfactory, she could become so angry that she came down the chimney and into the house, and sometimes she would break down the whole chimney. Or she could press her terrifying face to the window to check how it looked, and if things were not ready for Yule, she would, according to Norwegian sources, cry out, piercingly: “Inkje bryggja, inkje baga, inkje store eld hava!!” (Not brewed, not baked, no great fire do they have!”)”
“The practice of Lussevaka – to stay awake through Lussinatt (the evening of December 12) to guard oneself and the household against evil, not only fits symbolically well with a solstice celebration of longest night, but also brings to mind the description from Bede that Mother’s Night was observed for the entire night as well. Today it’s not uncommon for their to be parties as part of the lussevaka observance, sometimes with people actually cooking and making the lussekatter rolls they’d eat in the morning. People may use the time to work on handcrafted projects. Some will drink and be merry with their peers. There are old references to folk traditions of writing Lussi’s name on doors and fences, or in other areas of having weapons at hand (or hanging them up) while you observed the vigil. In some areas you were meant to feast to keep you strong through the terrors of the night. It was a night where animals were said in some areas to be able to speak, telling Lussi what evil they may have witnessed. Livestock in some areas were given a treat of extra food, or a lussebit, meant to help them survive the evil that may lurk during the long night. There’s some folk customs that include women invoking Lussi for oracles on their future husbands.”
Loki, Winter Solstice, Lussinatta, Santa Lucia’s Day, and a ginger cookie recipe
Thanks to Dagulf Loptson sharing in her book PLAYING WITH FiRE (page 220 or location 4041 on my Kindle copy) her UPG that Loki celebrates December 13th as something like a birthday, people have been connecting the dots between Loki and a winter solstice celebration:
https://ladyofthelake.blog/2018/12/14/lokis-holiday-dec-13th/
https://lokiheals.wordpress.com/2018/12/14/loki-day-december-13/amp/
About Santka Lucia’s Day in Sweden: https://www.whychristmas.com/cultures/sweden.shtml and Saint Lucy’s / Santa Lucia’s Day’s roots as the winter solstice festival and Lussinatta: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Lucy%27s_Day
So, yeah, a date long associated with all-night parties after a mad rush to get ready for Yule and escape Lussi’s wrath? That’s been celebrated for millennia with ginger cookies and saffron bread? I can totally see a Certain Hearthfire Deity with a taste for ginger and a love of a good party adopting that as Their Day, or possibly reclaiming it as theirs if Lussi was originally an aspect of Loki and the connection was lost over time. Maybe that’s also a reason we associate Loki with the number 13?
Anyway, here’s an old recipe from my family in the Canadian Maritime provinces to help you celebrate December 13th, the solstice, or Yule with our favourite redheaded mooch:
Gingerbread or Ginger Snap Cookie Recipe
250 mL brown sugar
250 mL butter or shortening
250 mL fancy molasses
2 eggs
15 mL ginger powder
5 mL salt
1125 mL all-purpose flour (sifted)
30 mL baking powder dissolved in 60 mL milk
Preheat oven to 375 F / 180 C
Mix dry ingredients and set aside
Cream butter until soft, then add sugar, molasses, eggs, and soda-milk mixture while mixing well. Add the dry ingredients a bit at a time until you’ve used it up; dough will form s ball. Roll out on a lightly floured board, thicker than 1cm for a soft cookie, thinner with extra flour for a brittle snap. Cut with floured cutter, place on parchment-lined cookie sheet, and bake for 12 minutes. (Dough may be made ahead and frozen.)
(I’ll edit to add a photo once I find a local grocer who isn’t sold out of fancy molasses... substitution with blackstrap molasses made them too molasses-y and their colour too dark to easily judge crispiness coming out of the oven.)

[ID: Three screenshots from an Ink game replicating the style of Disco Elysium, including backgrounds, tasks, red/white checks, and skill portraits. Detailed text description under cut, but the point of the images is their styling.]
So I went into some sort of hyperdrive this weekend and churned out an Ink webport template that resembles Disco Elysium, intended for use in fan-made games for people who don’t like coding? Anyway, you can play it here or copy the template to make your own!
(And of course shout out to the other DE fan game frameworks made or in the works! I just love using Ink as a language, so I wanted one of my own)
[Detailed ID: First image reads:
You: “More like the template for one.”
Some Dumb Game: That’s because writing takes more brainpower than coding, weirdly enough.
You: “What about formatting?”
Some Dumb Game: “What about it?”
You: “Other kinds of texts?”
Some Dumb Game: Oh, hell yeah.
New Task: Figure out what else you can do.
Thought gained: Make My Own Game
You: “Okay...”
Logic [Easy: Success]: It’s really not that hard.
1. “Ah, art! I’m an art person.”
2. “Ugh, put it back. I like my IF text based.”
Image two reads:
Some Dumb Game - How about now?
Composure [Trivial: Success]: Nice. You managed to withstand a skill check for once.
Continue
Image three reads:
Some Dumb Game: This is going to take some concentration, let’s clear out your head for a moment.
1. [Composure - Challenging 20] “I’ve got this, I totally won’t lock this skill check.”
2. “Let me take a breath first.”]

How to write user input variables in Ink for Web/inkjs
This is the first tutorial post that I hope to do every month. These tutorial posts will be focused on using narrative tools/interactive fiction tools to create games.
I know that because Ink is a middleware tool (meaning it was made to be used with game engines) instead of being a standalone browser narrative tool like Choicescript and Twine, a lot of interactive fiction authors believe that it cannot be used to create a Choice of Games style game/interactive gamebook, but I want to show that those type of games can be created with Ink. This tutorial is about how to write user input text and store it as a variable in inkjs/Ink for the Web such as names and customisable pronouns.
Step 1
List the variables that you are going to use at the very top of the ink file. Note that all ink variables start with VAR no matter the data type and must have a set value even if it is empty.
Tumblr media
Step 2
To create the user input text field in Ink, you write the HTML text input code in your ink file. Note that this will not be shown in the inky editor as inky does not support showing this HTML element so it will only be shown when you export as web. The HTML element id and the variable name must be different from each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HTML first name input element shown in Inky editor:
Tumblr media
HTML last name input element shown in Inky editor:
Tumblr media
HTML input first and last name elements shown in web export:
Tumblr media
Step 3
Open the main.js file of your Ink web export with the text editor of your choice (I use VS Code) and add the following if statementS which will be used as a tag in your Ink file. This is where the user input first name and last name is turned into a variable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 4
Make sure you add the tags to the Ink file right after the player confirms their name.
#PICK_FIRST_NAME tag used in Ink file:
Tumblr media
#PICK_LAST_NAME tag used in Ink file:
Tumblr media
Step 5
Use the name variables you created at the top of your Ink file (fname and lname) in your story.
Name variables used in Inky editor:

Name variables used in web export:

That is how you write user input variables for an inkjs/Ink for the Web story. Here is the code for the main Ink story and the main.js file along with the code blocks of the above images.

Two of my favourite things and one wonderful combination AND fairly, practical.Roman wooden-ware CalligraphyWhy don't you blend a hand-lettered tag to some plant stem or around the grip of a jug of flowers to allow them to sing much more. A couple of words written on will probably be sufficient. Alternately, fill an empty jam jar with flowers cut from the garden, wind some many times around the rim and then add a gift label. It's the tiny changes which make the biggest differences here.Vases of flowersArabic Calligraphy wooden-ware ArtYou could use two or one of these gift tag thoughts or scatter the appearance around and decorate your living space. The best bit is, it's really easy to achieve, have the benefit of being timeless and will make daily beautiful. Japanese is one of popular language for tattoos nowadays. However, we can even use calligraphies composed by brush the place of honour of the house, in the niche Tokonoma. There are numerous choice calligraphy (Verses, Poetries, Sayings and Independent Kanji) for various seasons. In Indiait could be customized to alter calligraphy decorating as per our style suits.

Struggling to translate this one - I’ve managed to translate most of the words individually, but I’m not finding it easy trying to turn them into a meaningful/accurate English interpretation. If anyone has a link to a translation (or can be bothered to translate it themselves) then please let me know! Otherwise, just enjoy the song and Gunnhild’s beautiful voice :)
