A book not yet released: I am very excited for a lot of books coming out in 2025, some of which I've talked about in this post, but to add a new one to the list: Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Scwab. Sapphic vampires by one of my favorite authors ever, sign me tf up!

A book everyone should read: My bias is gonna be strong on this one, but Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice I think is a book everyone should read if you want to understand a lot of modern vampire tropes. Everything always comes back to Anne Rice at the end of the day 😂

3. What were your top five books of the year?

In no particular order:

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro--this one just hit perfectly for me. It's got a level of Arthuriana that adds but never detracts and I'm too Hispanic not to love magical realism.

Legends and Lattes Travis Baldtree--I smiled the whole way through, and I kept putting off reading it because I didn't want it to end. Very cozy, very sweet.

The Best Bad Things by Katrina Carrasco-- I'm fascinated by every single bit of this series and it's had a big impact on my own writing. I read quite a bit of historical fiction with queer characters, this book and the sequel are scratching the Sarah Waters itch while really not being derivative of that at all.

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik-- this is standing in place of the whole series, which I devoured and enjoyed every second of. El my beloved! Orion my baby! I have next year's TBR list stacked with Novik.

A Guest in the House by E.M. Carroll--I didn't read as many graphic novels as I usually do this year, but this one was very good! Body horror, haunting, and excellent colors, I was always gonna love it.

18. How many books did you buy?

I don't usually buy many, I'm a library girlie. They're all on my TBR except for The Buried Giant: An Artist of the Floating World, also by Ishiguro, a box set of the Spiderwick Chronicles because those were very foundational for baby Nikki, volume 1 of Nana because my secondhand bookstore had it. Several that I would say were more bought by my partner but I was there and also I want to read them.

25. What reading goals do you have for next year?

To read through the books I OWN but have never read :/ I'm real bad about that! I'm also going to work my way through The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned. I love-hated Interview with the Vampire, I'm compelled to read at least those two but I'm extremely against the idea of reading all her vampire books. Too many. I don't do long series anymore. I also feel like I should read more nonfiction, I've probably been out of grad school long enough to enjoy it again. We'll see!

3. What were your top 5 books this year?

Ouooough. One thing I've become very conscious of over the last couple of years is that I suffer from really strong recency bias; I always rate good books I've read recently higher than good books I read at the start of the year. So by instinct my top five books this year include Interview with the Vampire, The Tale of the Body Thief, and The Vampire Armand, all of which I read in the last 5 weeks. If I had to limit myself to one book per author... I'm going to say:

Interview with the Vampire, by Anne Rice;

Ancillary Mercy, by Ann Leckie;

Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov;

My Sister, the Serial Killer, by Oyinkan Braithwaite;

and Bridge, A Love Story, by Zia Mahmood <- don't read that last one unless you're into Bridge.

14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?

I've just read the first six books of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles; I need to read something that appreciates women. As a palate cleanser. I've been recommended No Gods For Drowning, by Hailey Piper - allegedly it serves butch realness, which I haven't had enough of lately. I'd also like to read the seinen martial arts manga Batuque, which I read multiple volumes of in 2020 and which concluded this year.

15. Did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year? What did you think of them?

I managed to read two (2) Sci-Fi books published in 2023/24 this year, and they were both shortlisted for the Hugo Awards. Some Desperate Glory, which won, was refreshing, energetic science fiction; I read most of it in a single plane journey. Translation State was a bit more niche and much less of a thriller, but I hugely enjoyed it - I think I would recommend it even if I hadn't read the rest of the Imperial Radch series over the week beforehand, but as it is I'll just recommend the series.
