Sunday and Dr. Ratio thoughts:
There was a line of commonality I was thinking of with these two in the pursuit of "truth", where Ratio would prefer something quantifiable and tangible from all types of proofs (witness accounts, historical records, and other scientific evidence) whereas Sunday uses his Harmony/Order (?)ability to find the "truth", sort of reminiscent of a polygraph but with that ancient thought of the body withholding the truth unless subjected to pain...
That's not to say Sunday is correct (he may consider he is making a morally good decision in his use of his ability) but in the ambiguousness and unreality of the dreamscape where any thought or feeling can take shape, his mind control/polygraph method makes sense. Especially if visitors to the Dreamscape have something sinister to hide.
Going back to Ratio, I think Screwllum makes mention in the Divergent Universe introduction that Ratio is not keen/doesn't like the idea of the Dreamscape or of Penacony "not being to that gentleman's tastes ". Also, Ratio being modeled in some way after the Stoics or at least their line of thinking would not be aligned with the sweet dream which is antithetical to Stoic virtues like courage, wisdom, and temperance.
It also makes me think that Dr. Ratio would dislike history fictionalogists like Gallagher who try to obfuscate the truth from others, though I am not sure for what purpose they act the way they do.
Anyway, these are just some stray thoughts I had as the Penacony chapter is winding down.

Passing the Polygraph - Books of Collections
It’s been quite a time that I’ve been obscurely dissatisfied with ordinary photographic monographs. I suppose I shouldn’t complain: I’ve written texts for dozens of them, usually as an introduction before the pictures, and usually found much to like in the pictures concerned. No doubt the good ones still keep coming; the great ones, too, and probably at the same very slow rate as ever. But I’m…

Are Lie Detector Tests Legally Valid in the UK?
Introduction
We at British Lie Detector Test are pleased to provide a range of advanced lie-detecting techniques throughout the United Kingdom. One of the innovative technologies we use is EyeDetect, a non-invasive lie-detecting technology created by Converus. EyeDetect offers a more subtle technique than conventional polygraph tests, which track physiological reactions such as heart rate, blood pressure, and skin conductivity. EyeDetect uses a more subtle approach to assessing involuntary eye movements, including pupil dilation and blink rate, therefore evaluating sincerity. The legal legitimacy of EyeDetect tests in the United Kingdom will be examined in this essay, together with their admissibility in court, ethical issues, and pragmatic uses.
Understanding EyeDetect Technology
EyeDetect is a state-of-the-art lie detection system that uses infrared eye-tracking technology to monitor involuntary eye movements. The system picks up variations in pupil size, blink rate, and other eye motions that would point to dishonesty or stress. The cognitive burden of dishonesty is believed to affect these automatic reactions; hence, when someone is lying, their body reacts unconsciously in ways that EyeDetect can measure.
The technique starts with the examinee answering a set of true or false questions while an infrared camera tracks and documents the subject's eye movements constantly. The device tracks more than 60 measurements every second to guarantee that even the smallest variations in eye movement are caught. The gathered data is examined using proprietary algorithms created by Converus once it is acquired. Based on scientific facts, the system generates a conclusion by matching the patterns of eye movement to those usually linked with truthfulness or dishonesty.
EyeDetect clearly has advantages over more conventional lie detection techniques such as the polygraph. Unlike a polygraph examination, EyeDetect is non-invasive, so the examinee does not have to be physically attached to any equipment. EyeDetect is also usually speedier; tests usually take between 15 and 30 minutes, and results can be accessed immediately after the test is finished. EyeDetect's benefits have made it even more appealing in the UK and elsewhere.
Legal Status of EyeDetect in the UK
EyeDetect's legal position leaves some doubt and ongoing concern over the UK legal situation. Although conventional polygraph test findings are not usually accepted as proof in criminal courts, EyeDetect's legal status is less obvious. Polygraph tests are regarded scientifically as unreliable in many legal systems, including the UK, so their findings cannot be presented in court as clear proof. This is mostly because polygraph exams evaluate physiological reactions influenced by several elements unrelated to dishonesty, such as anxiety, terror, or physical diseases.
However, EyeDetect is a distinct sort of technology. EyeDetect detects eye motions, which are less likely to be under examinee conscious control than physiological reactions. This variation makes EyeDetect a more accurate method of lie detection, and its application in legal settings might change if the technology gains more general acceptance.
EyeDetect's acceptance in court will probably rely on several factors; its usage in UK legal procedures is still quite experimental. One such factor is whether the technology has been subject to sufficient scientific investigation and validation. In the United States, for example, EyeDetect has been used as evidence in certain court cases, following Daubert motions, which assess the scientific validity of expert testimony. In the UK, in the meantime, no such decision has yet been rendered, and the technology has not specifically been approved as proof in a court of law.
When deciding whether evidence is admissible in the UK, judges have significant discretion; this can include EyeDetect results. EyeDetect may occasionally be used as additional evidence, even though it is doubtful that it will replace more conventional kinds of proof. This could involve studies using EyeDetect as a tool to assist law enforcement departments or attorneys in evaluating the veracity of a suspect or witness.
Dependency only on EyeDetect, however, results in legal actions to be troublesome. EyeDetect findings could be considered inadequate to support a claim or defense without confirming data. Similar to all kinds of data, EyeDetect's impact and efficacy will depend critically on the setting in which it is applied.
Ethical Considerations Surrounding EyeDetect
Although EyeDetect shows promise for usage in many fields, its implementation raises significant ethical questions. These issues are especially important when considering their use in both legal and business environments since they mostly relate to accuracy, privacy, and permission.
One of EyeDetect's main points of sale is its great accuracy rate, which ranges from 86% to 90%. Although this would seem to be a good gauge of dependability, the technology is not without restrictions. Several elements can affect EyeDetect's accuracy: the examinee's emotional condition, the clarity of the questions asked, and the quality of the tools used. For instance, the results could suffer if the examinee is nervous or agitated since increased anxiety can also influence involuntary eye movements.
Moreover, the conditions under which the test is administered define the efficiency of the system. The test that we provide is given in a controlled atmosphere free of outside variables or distractions to get the most trustworthy results. Like any type of lie detection, the results of an EyeDetect test should be interpreted with regard to these elements.
EyeDetect tests gather delicate biometric data, which begs serious privacy issues. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) places rigorous standards on companies in the UK who gather and handle personal data. This covers biometric data, which, under GDPR, is regarded as sensitive personal information. Companies that provide EyeDetect tests have to make sure they follow these rules, which include getting clear permission from the person receiving the test, guaranteeing that the data is securely kept, and only keeping it for as long as is required for the aims of the test.
Those undertaking EyeDetect testing must be totally informed about how their data will be used and have the option to withdraw consent at any point in order to preserve their privacy. Organizations also have to make sure that all data processing is done responsibly and transparently and that, when at all possible, data is anonymised.
Consent and Coercion: Another key ethical concern is the issue of consent. In some cases, individuals may feel pressured or coerced into undergoing an EyeDetect test. This is particularly relevant in employment or legal contexts, where individuals may feel that refusing to take the test could jeopardise their prospects or lead to negative consequences. In such cases, it is important to ensure that individuals voluntarily provide informed consent before undergoing a test. Coercion or undue pressure to participate would not only be unethical but could also undermine the validity of the results.
Practical Applications of EyeDetect
Despite the ethical and legal considerations, EyeDetect has already found applications in a range of sectors. While its legal status remains uncertain, its potential as a tool for truth verification has proven valuable in several areas.
Employment Screening: One of the most common uses of EyeDetect is in employment screening. Some employers use the system as part of their hiring process to assess the integrity and truthfulness of potential employees. While EyeDetect results are not legally binding, they can provide additional information that helps employers make more informed decisions. For example, a company may choose to use EyeDetect to assess a candidate’s honesty in relation to specific job responsibilities, such as security or compliance.
Criminal Investigations: EyeDetect is also increasingly used by law enforcement agencies in criminal investigations. The system can be used as a tool to help gather insights into suspects' truthfulness. However, it is important to note that EyeDetect is typically used as supplementary evidence rather than as the primary basis for criminal charges or convictions. It is not meant to replace traditional investigative techniques but rather to complement them. Police and investigators may use EyeDetect as a way to gather additional information or test the veracity of a suspect's statements.
Relationship Counselling: EyeDetect has found a place in personal relationships, particularly in cases of infidelity or trust issues. In these situations, individuals may choose to undergo EyeDetect testing to help determine the truthfulness of their partner’s claims. While the results of such tests are not legally binding, they can provide clarity and help individuals make more informed decisions about their relationships.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while EyeDetect represents a significant advancement in lie detection technology, its legal validity in the UK remains uncertain. While it is not yet explicitly accepted as evidence in court, its potential for use in legal proceedings is growing, particularly as the technology is further validated and studied. Ethical considerations, such as ensuring informed consent, protecting privacy, and accounting for the technology's reliability, are crucial in determining how EyeDetect is used in various contexts.
At British Lie Detector Test, we believe that EyeDetect holds considerable promise, not only as a tool for law enforcement and legal professionals but also as a valuable asset for businesses and individuals seeking clarity and truth. As this technology continues to evolve, we remain committed to providing accurate, reliable, and ethical lie-detection services to our clients across the UK.

Improvements of PG systems, inclusion of more parameters (such as ECG), introduction of portable and wireless devices seem to be the most prominent trends around SAS screening/diagnosis and ECG/ Polygraphy systems.
Sleep apnea (SA) is one of the most common respiratory disorders, with 49% of middle-aged men reportedly having clinically significant SA in Europe. The prevalence of SA with associated excessive daytime somnolence is ~3% to 7% in adult men & 2% to 5% in adult women. Sleep tests are usually prescribed by sleep specialists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, or neurologists. Choice of which test to use is up to the prescribing physician.
SA screening tests are usually prescribed based on the presence of typical symptoms such as loud snoring, episodes of breathing cessation during sleep witnessed by another person, abrupt awakenings, insomnia, morning headache, daytime hypersomnia, tiredness, irritability, mood swings and attention problems. These symptoms are likely to manifest in obese patients, patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke and asthma. Improvements of PG systems, inclusion of more parameters (such as ECG), introduction of portable and wireless devices seem to be the most prominent trends around SAS screening/diagnosis and ECG/ Polygraphy systems.
There is also an increasing demand for home sleep studies and therefore a need for more patient-friendly devices which could improve compliance. Wearable devices and smartphone based technologies are perceived to be the next trend in SA diagnostics. Philips is the top most supplier providing the polygraphs. There are numerous unmet needs around SAS screening/ diagnostics. As previously mentioned, most important ones pertain to too few parameters monitored by PG, resulting in less comprehensive assessment of sleep structure.
Therefore, there is a need for more advanced PG devices and in general for more quick, easy to use and reliable diagnostic methods. Current price of home PG devices and tests itself are perceived by some physicians as too high, so any price reduction would be positive.

The Dover’s lived on the edge of a turn, the house was adorned with wood on the outside and was an odd shape, at least to you. The yard was encapsulated by trees, the forest constantly reminding the family of the possible location of Anna and Joy.
After your conversation with Loki, everything was cumbersome. The only words that were shared were, ‘let’s go’ and ‘we’re here.’ Loki let you lead this one, at least for the introductions. You walked up the steps and knocked on the door, then rang the doorbell once. You and Loki barely exchanging a glance at one another.
“Hi, can I help you?” A woman, middle aged with blonde hair opened the door. You smiled as kindly as you could to not worry her and moved to show her your badge.
“Hi Mrs. Dover, I’m Detective L/N and this is Detective Loki, we were hoping to catch up with you on what you discussed with the police last night and about the polygraph test this morning. We will be leading the case to find your daughter.” You tell her and she nods her head along, gathering the information you just stated before she opened the door and led you inside. She brought you into the living room which had appeared quite put together, besides the woman who just made herself comfortable, wrapping her body around a blanket and sitting in the seat closest to the edge of the couch. Loki sat down on the other end, taking out his phone to answer whoever might have texted him. You took a seat before her on the recliner.
“So did we pass?” Grace Dover asks either of you but she had been watching Loki text on his phone. He stopped and put the phone in his pocket before turning to her.
“I’m sorry, what did you say?” He replied and she asked again.
“The poly thing, the lie detector we took this morning, did we pass?” She said and crossed her arms in front of her.
“Oh, yeah... yeah, sorry. Yes, we appreciate your cooperation.” Loki looked away from her and folded his hands in front of him. Grace looked over to you and you looked from watching Loki to her.
“It’s embarrassing... all this fuss.” She tells the both of you and you furrow your brows at her, confused as to why she would consider his missing child a fussy situation.
“Everyone’s going to think we’re crazy when those two come out of hiding, where ever they are.” She sighs and looks down the hallway where she had said her husband was just using the bathroom.
“Mrs. Dover, do you have any reason to believe that they ran away?” You asked her and she shrugged a bit.
“No...” She whispered and cringed at herself inwardly before looking at the both of you.
“They’re happy... They must have run away.” Grace nodded her head at no one in particular, more so she was trying to convince herself that they had run away.
“They must have run away, right?” She looked at Loki and he nodded his head and gave her a small, sympathetic smile.
“Um.” Grace cleared her throat and tried to look more enthused.
“Your Police Captain told me that you’ve solved every case you’ve ever been assigned, is that right?” She asked Loki and he looked away from her, meeting your eyes for the first time since the fight in the car. Grace looked over at you then and tried to give you a smile. You broke the gaze between you and Loki and looked back at her.
“Do you have children, Detective?” She seemed to ask only you but you weren’t sure.
“No... We’re going to find you daughter, Mrs. Dover.” You reassured her and Loki nodded at her too. She broke down crying and Loki continued to talk to calm her nerves.
“We believe that they came back here after they left the Birches yesterday.” Loki told her but the conversation was interrupted by Mr. Dover, Keller, who entered the living room fixing the buttons on the cuffs of his shirt. He was a tall man, a bit taller than Loki and looked like a lumberjack, a full beard covered his face and he wore plaid and heavy looking shoes. You stood, along with Loki in a way of greeting him coming into the room.
“They were looking for Anna’s red whistle.” He stated and moved over to his wife who was still crying on the couch. She clung onto him as he rubbed a hand over her head and unwashed hair.
“Right.” Loki agreed. “I read your statement.”
“I’m Detective Loki, this is my partner Detective L/n.” Loki introduced you and you were slowly getting sick of introducing yourselves to new people. Keller shook both of your hands.
“We are leading the investigation regarding your daughter’s disappearance.” You comment and he nods at you in understanding. Loki gestured to the couch, offering Keller a place to sit.
“Please, sit down.”
“No...” He stutters a few words before finding what he wanted to say.
“My son, he told you that the guy was just inside the RV just watching ‘em.” He waits for Loki to give him some kind of response to what his son had told police earlier in the day.
“We haven’t found any physical evidence inside the RV, or his Aunt’s house where he lives.” Loki responded with a straight face, trying to be as professional as he could.
“Nothing?” Keller almost whispers in sadness with a strangled look gracing his grizzly face.
“Alex Jones, we found out, has the IQ of a ten year old boy... We don’t believe he could be capable of something like this.” You disclose to the Dover’s and they look at you, confusion finding a home between them.
“Well how can he drive an RV if he can’t answer a question.” Keller inquires and Loki defends you as Keller became visibly upset.
“He has a valid Pennsylvania license.” Loki tells him and Keller becomes more conflicted and confused.
“And they said he ran, right? They said he tried to run away, why would he run?”
“We’ve just spent ten hours questioning this boy. I hear what you’re saying.” Loki extends his arm, trying to diffuse the situation before Keller explodes like a bomb.
“Did you give him a lie detector, you gave us a lie detector, did you give him one?”
“Sir, I understand what you’re asking me, yes we did. We gave him a lie detector, but there’s no way he-” Loki laughs in frustration a little bit and that made Keller angry.
“A lie detector doesn’t work if you don’t understand the questions.” Loki tells him and suddenly Keller and Loki were talking over one another and everything spiraled out of control.
“Shut the fuck up for a fucking second!” Keller shouted at Loki and Grace flinched and wheezed a little and Keller realized what he had said and his words were out of hand. You moved toward Loki, teaming up by his side and he looked at you, sighing to himself but not letting Keller affect him.
“This is what I’m going to have you do for me, I’m going to need you to calm down.” Keller collected himself and took in a deep breath to calm his nerves.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, just-just listen to me for a second...”
“Mr. Dover, I know this is an incredibly difficult thing to go through, we have every police officer in the state looking for Joy and Anna right now.” You told him, giving Loki a break from dealing with Keller himself.
“How could you possibly know what this feels like? My daughter is gone! And there’s nothing that we know can help find her!” Keller explains and Grace just cries more into Keller’s arm.
“My sister went missing when I was eleven. I got into this career to stop little children from being taken and prevent families from feeling what my family went through. We will find Anna and bring her home to you, I promise.” You explain to them and Grace looked up from Keller’s arm and looks to you.
“Did they ever find your sister?” Grace asked but immediately apologized. You looked at her and then Keller, turning to Loki and giving him a look which he only could read as ‘I need to leave’ and he let you go. You could hear Grace apologize to Loki again for what she said and he reassured her that you would be just fine. Just fine.
You sat in the car waiting for a few minutes before Loki exited the house. You watched him as he made his way to the car, He must have received a text or call because he took out his phone but immediately put it back, ignoring whoever it was. He got into the car, ready to turn on the ignition but was interrupted by Keller yelling at the car.
“Detectives! Detectives!”
“Shit.” Loki mumbled under his breath and rolled down the window, Keller’s eyes flashing between the two of you as he tried to get answers about Alex Jones.
“He stays in custody until my daughter is found right? Right?”
“We have a forty-eight hour hold on him, it ends tomorrow unless we bring charges.” Loki tells him.
“Well charge him with something, charge him.”
“Mr. Dover-”
“That man abducted two little girls and that has to be worth something to keep him in custody and I want you to be one hundred percent sure. Thank you, I appreciate it.” Keller left and Loki rolled the window back up, turned on the car and drove off.
“I never thought I would use Lucy as an excuse to get people to trust me, but I guess there’s a first time for everything...” You said quietly, trailing off as your crossed your arms over your chest, warming your body with the big blue coat you wore and looked out the window.
“I think they felt they weren’t alone. They’ll at least trust you now.” Loki replied and you shrugged.
“I don’t know...” You whispered and just hoped he get to the station faster than usual so you could get out of the car and away from everything for a minute.
“I’m sorry about what I did earlier... I-” He cleared his throat. “I shouldn’t have done that, I’m sorry.”
“No, I overreacted, it’s something we should have talked about before.” You say and he agrees with you, no questions asked. But he hesitated for a moment before asking you his own question, afraid of a screaming match waiting to break free from inside the two of you due to overwhelming frustrations in work and life.
“Should we talk about it now?” He asked and you sigh and rub your hand over your face, not right now, not right now.
“I don’t want to bring this into work. You can drive to my house, then we can talk there if that’s alright with you.” You suggest and he taps his fingers against the steering wheel in contemplation.
“Ok.”
The station was no different than before you had left that morning. There were news stations parked outside, reporters standing by the door waiting for someone to come and talk to them. Loki pulled into a spot specifically reserved for employees of the precinct and the two of you sat in the car for a moment watching the press.
“They’re fucking animals.” You comment and he laughs, for the first time since your argument, and points to a woman in a blazer and skirt. Heels on her feet and her hair was done up like some early two-thousands bride.
“I suppose no one told her it was the end of November huh?” You snickered at the thought and grabbed the files from the back, reaching over the center consul, trying to avoid touching Loki too much as you gathered the files.
“O’Malley should really give a press conference; you can’t keep people in the dark when two kids are missing. He’s a prick and an asshole who shouldn’t be Captain of this force. All he wants is to go home and sit at the dinner table with his family and tries to get through his day without an incident, but the minute something horrible happens he keeps the doors closed and everyone out so we can deal with it internally, and who does that help when no one knows what’s going on? No one.” You huff and put papers back in their respective folders before handing the ones Loki had been working on to him and then getting out of the car.
Loki waited for you at the trunk of the car to avoid one of you getting bombarded with reporters, which you were thankful for because it did happen as soon as you got close to the doors. Everyone was asking what was going on, who the two of you were, what was your involvement with the case, and rumors that circled around it. You ignored them both and Loki opened the door, letting you in first before closing it harshly behind him and shooing the reporters away.
At your desk, you took off your jacket and replaced it with the blazer that had been sitting on the back of your chair. Your desk was across from Loki’s and you shared the cubical with two officers who were out on a case at the moment, so it was quiet but peaceful for a minute. You hung up the coat where your blazer had been and put the files away, which was only halted when you took note of the pictures that had hung on the bulletin on your desk.
Two little girls, one younger than the other and marshmallows on fire, on sticks, in front of a campfire, labeled first camping trip, 1994. Lucy was only eight and the next day you would wake up and she wasn’t sleeping next to you like she should have been.
You put the files down quickly and whisked yourself to the locker room, running literally into Loki as you went and he put his arms on your shoulders to stop you but you backed yourself out of his grasp and into the room. The locker room was barely what it was supposed to be. There were two showers, with two toilets separate from the rest of the room which just held lockers with everyone’s last names on it. You went to your locker, took out your bag which was one you were able to keep a change of clothes, extra shoes, a few snacks in and your purse, so, it was about the size of a backpack. You grabbed the keys out of the bag and slung it over your shoulders, slamming the locker door shut and went back out into the office. Loki wasn’t at his desk at the moment so you assumed he was with O’Malley, luckily enough for you, you wouldn’t have to explain to him why you were leaving early, but he more than likely already understood why.
I went home. I just need some time. That was all you wrote on the sticky note you left on his keyboard.
Pulling into your driveway, your phone buzzed twice. Loki had read your note and said he would be over later, needing to follow up with registered sex offenders before he could leave for the night. So, you waited.
You didn’t know how long you were asleep but your doorbell sounded and you quickly woke and sat up from the couch, your neck strained and pained as you caught your breath. You rushed over to the door, seemingly forgot that Loki was supposed to have come over, worried that something might have gone wrong while you were asleep. You cracked open the door, a sound that resonated as a rubber peeling off something occurred when you opened the door, the cold rushing in and hitting your skin like icicles. Loki, with his hands in his big jacket pockets and his winter hat on stood there, bags ever present under his eyes.
“Sorry, I wasn’t sure how long that would take.” He said as you let him inside. He took off his coat and hung it over one of the chairs of your dining room table, as it he did every time. You shut the door behind you and waited until he was done so you could lead the way into your home, even though he knew what rooms where were. You flicked on the light switch in the living room, folding up the blanket you were using so he could sit down too.
“I didn’t know you were sleeping; I could have come another time.” He sighed and ran a hand over his face as he sat down, blinking hard, nervously.
“It’s fine. I don’t remember falling asleep.” You tell him and then the awkwardness of the conversation settles, the air thick and unwanted as the concept of love and the two of you hangs over your heads. You weren’t afraid of the conversation, neither was he but it still was something you dreaded and inside you knew that this could go one of two ways.
“So...” Loki trailed off and looked down at his feet as he leaned forward in the spot he was sitting in. He folded his hands in front of him and you leaned against the back of the couch, your arm resting on the top of it and your head rested against it, your feet covered by the blanket and curled up against you.
“Are you not even going to look at me?” You ask him and he does, his face worn and tired, it had been a long day after all.
“What do you want me to say, Y/n? I don’t want to fight about this... we don’t need to make it a fight.” He explained and you agreed, sure. But everything that was good for you ended in a fight and to be completely honest, you didn’t know how to handle situations like this unless it ended in a fight. Loki was different though. It could have been because he was your partner and had seen every side of you, he knew you better than anyone in the world and that was different for you, no one else knew anything.
The feeling when he looked into your eyes overwhelmed you. It was more than likely a mix of remembering Lucy, the strain of her disappearance, and your complicated feelings for the man sitting next to you. Tears welling inside your eyes and you looked away from him, embarrassed by your emotions, and he moved closer to you, rubbing his hand comforting on your back and resting the other on your folded legs.
“Baby, baby... it’s alright...” He whispered quietly as he let you cry into him.
Loki’s childhood was rough to say the least, he knew things that would come up in a case would affect him badly but he shoved it down, as he was taught to do as he lived in boys homes his entire life. Hell, the reason he didn’t like anyone using his first name was because it was the name the people who left him gave him and nothing good ever came from them. He watched as you welcomed his touch, the feeling warm and comforting inside of him and sad at the same time.
“I’m-I’m sorry. God, I’m just a whole mess, aren’t I?” You tried to laugh and break the tension but it didn’t exactly work.
“We’re all a mess right now. It’s okay.” He reassured you and continued to rub your back. You wiped under your eyes, brushing the tears away.
“I like you.” You whispered to him and he pushed the stray hairs out of your face, watching your eyes, then your lips, then your eyes again.
“I’ve liked you for a long time and I-I know I really shouldn’t but you’re the only thing that has been good in a really, really long time.”
Loki smiled lightly and almost blushed, he was enamored by you and he wasn’t sure if he had ever felt that way about anyone before. Sure, there had been other women in his life, for the short term and long, but none of them made him feel the way you made him feel. He was never too good with words. During his life, especially with the priests and the church members, he was always expected to be quiet, still and quiet and never talk about the things he experienced or felt, other than his occasional sin of course. So, instead of saying anything he kissed you softly, making sure that what he was doing was ok for you.
You responded faster than he thought you would, your hand coming to rest upon his as he moved his hand from your back to your neck, deepening the kiss and moved his other hand to grasp your waist. You wrapped your arms around him, bringing him closer to you and after a few moments he broke the kiss. His shirt was wrinkled and his cheeks were red, but his eyes were on you, that look was for you.
“I...” He trailed off and you got an itch for what he was going to say, only because you knew him well and he didn’t want to do anything you might not want because of the day both of you had.
“It’s okay... come on.” You escaped his grasp and tossed the blanket on the couch, extending you hand to him as he sat.
“Let’s go to bed, we’ll have a long day tomorrow too.” He took your hand and brought it to his lips and kissed the back of it before pulling you back to him and planting one on your forehead also.
Tomorrow was nothing like you expected it to be.

Each and every sector has benefitted vastly from modern cutting-edge technology standards and now we have enabled swiftness, efficiency, better productivity and unparalleled precision in myriad activities.
Technology has enabled great ease and convenience in a plethora of sectors and these developments have simplified our day to day lives. As technology intercepts and “smartens” a broader plethora of processes, the same has becomes fruitful in enabling high-tech solutions for crime solving.
The advances in forensic analysis and criminology with modern technology
Traditional criminal investigations and forensic analysis relied on conventions tools, age-old methodologies and processes that have a lower precision rate. This resulted in flaws or unacceptable errors in crime solving investigations and thus a major trouble for enabling swift justice and accountability.
However, over the past few years, we have witnessed marvelous technology enabled advancements in forensic analysis that makes solving crimes a very high-tech process. The “forensic sciences” have benefitted at large from the introduction of myriad technologies and now we can target unmatched levels of precision, effectiveness, swiftness as well as accuracy in the methods.
Forensic technologies and their advantages in crime investigations
Forensic analysis is imperative to criminal investigations. It plays a vital role in the justice system and assists investigators and authorities in solving crimes. As with technology advancement, crimes have become more complex and trickier to solve. Thus, an equal technology intervention in investigations is a must so as to resolve these cases and ensure swift justice.
Criminals adopt complicated methodologies aided by modern technology so as to evade detection and enable proof alleviation. Thus, conventional forensic and investigation methodologies are inefficient to cope with modern crimes. Experts In The Courtroom: Expert Witness Testimony In The Past And Present
By Tristan Sirls, University of Michigan Class of 2022
December 2, 2020
Tumblr media
Expert witness testimony has become more common in the courtroom over the last hundred years, with experts of all disciplines weighing in on trials to give their opinions on facts of a legal case. But what is an “expert”? Over the previous decades, different court rulings have made attempts to better define what exactly counts as expert testimony that is admissible in court. Here is a summary these attempts.
1923: Frye v. United States
In 1923, James Frye was convicted of second degree murder after being prosecuted by the federal government. Frye later appealed this conviction on the grounds that the court refused to allow him to use his results from a supposedly truth-detecting blood pressure test (a kind of polygraph test) as evidence in the trial1. However, the appeals court upheld this decision not to allow the test, and ruled that:
“Just when a scientific principle or discovery crosses the line between the experimental and demonstrable stages is difficult to define. Somewhere in this twilight zone the evidential force of the principle must be recognized, and while courts will go a long way in admitting expert testimony deduced from a well-recognized scientific principle or discovery, the thing from which the deduction is made must be sufficiently established to have gained general acceptance in the particular field in which it belongs2” [Frye v. United States, 293 F. 1013 (D.C. Cir. 1923)].
What’s most important here is the new criteria that the expert witness must base their testimony off of what is generally accepted by their expert community. This provides a vague but intuitive basis for evaluating expert testimony in the future: is the evidence that the expert is basing their testimony off of recognized as legitimate by peers in their field? However, this still leaves plenty of room for debate on what exactly “general acceptance,” really means. How many other experts have to accept something for it to be generally accepted? Does this only apply to the scientific disciplines, or can expert testimony from other disciplines be used too? These questions we broadly left up to interpretation until Congress created the Federal Rules of Evidence in 1975.
1975: The Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE)
Rules 702 and 703 of the FRE had to do with expert witness testimony, and stated that:
Rule 702. Testimony by Experts
If scientific, technical, or other specialized knowledge will assist the
trier of fact to understand the evidence or to determine a fact in issue,
a witness qualified as an exj)ert by knowledge, skill, experience, train-
ing, or education, may testify thereto in the form of an opinion or
otherwise.
Rule 703. Bases of Opinion Testimony by Experts
The facts or data in the particular case upon which an expert bases
an opinion or inference may be those perceived by or made known to
him at or before the hearing. If of a type reasonably relied upon by
experts in the particular field in forming opinions or inferences upon
the subject, the facts or data need not be admissible in evidence.
Interestingly, nowhere in the these rules is Fryeor general acceptance mentioned. Rule 702 clarifies broadly what exactly an expert is, although there aren’t clear guidelines as to what knowledge, skills, etc.. are actually legitimate in the first place. Rule 703 addresses what facts an expert witness can rely on, and makes the important statement that if a fact is “of a type reasonably relied upon by experts in the particular field in forming opinions or interferences upon the subject, the facts or data need not be admissible in evidence.” What seems important here is that Rule 703 is again bringing in the idea that the validity of the facts that an expert uses in their testimony is based on how reasonable that expert’s peers might think those facts are. While this seems related to Frye in some ways, these rules don’t do much to clarify the uncertainties that Frye left. Furthermore, this still left open the possibility that science that wasn’t generally accepted or reasonable to a scientists peers might not be accepted in court: this could be alarming considering that oftentimes new and accurate theories are at first not generally accepted in science (Wegener’s theory of continental drift, which inspired the theory of plate tectonics, was dismissed as pseudoscience for many years). These rules were changed after the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on the Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals case4.
1993:Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals
Jason Daubert and Eric Schuller both suffered birth defects, which they blamed on the drug Benedictin. They consequently sued the company Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, which created Benedictin, for compensation. Importantly, during the trial, the expert testimony that Benedictin causes birth defects was based on methods that weren’t generally accepted at the time. As a result, the U.S. Supreme court made several rulings, including:
“In order to qualify as ‘scientific knowledge,’ an inference or assertion must be derived by the scientific method. Proposed testimony must be supported by appropriate validation-i. e., ‘good grounds,’ based on what is known. In short, the requirement that an expert's testimony pertain to "scientific knowledge" establishes a standard of evidentiary reliability5”.
What’s especially interesting about this ruling is the criteria of “the scientific method” and “scientific knowledge.” These criteria have in themselves their own set of criteria, of which falsifiability is an important part. The relationship between falsifiability and the scientific method was importantly articulated by philosopher Karl Popper4, who held that “scientific theories are characterized by entailing predictions that future observations might reveal to be false.6” What this means is that a scientific theory must meet certain criteria, which were partly transferred into the FRE after Daubert. These changes remain to this day, so that Rule 702 of the FRE now states:
A witness who is qualified as an expert by knowledge, skill, experience, training, or education may testify in the form of an opinion or otherwise if:
(a) the expert’s scientific, technical, or other specialized knowledge will help the trier of fact to understand the evidence or to determine a fact in issue;
(b) the testimony is based on sufficient facts or data;
(c) the testimony is the product of reliable principles and methods; and
(d) the expert has reliably applied the principles and methods to the facts of the case.
Source: Legal Information Institute7.
This introduction of the philosophy of science to law helped create strong guidelines as to what counts as acceptable expert testimony beyond just general acceptance. As a result, Daubert has become the standard for how expert witness testimony is evaluated at the federal level8.However, Daubert still left open the question of what kind of expert witnesses the ruling would apply to. This was answered in a later case, Kumho Tire Co. v. Carmichael. In this case, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that “that the Daubert standard applies to any expert witness in federal court, whether their testimony was scientific, technical, or otherwise8”.
The development of these cases over time both provides insight into what is valuable in courtroom testimony, and interesting answers to questions that don’t seem so obvious:what is an expert? How can a courtroom evaluate testimony that it isn’t equipped to understand? The Daubert ruling seems to provide strong answers to these questions through the ideas of the scientific method and falsifiability, however, there are plenty of experts on theories that aren’t as easily falsifiable. One interesting example of this is the use of historians as expert witnesses on voting rights cases9. While this article won’t deal with these cases specifically, it is an important topic to think about, and the link to an article on them will be in the sources below.

6 winners from Week 15 of the NFL season
Tumblr media
Jameis Winston and Eli Manning headlined a great week for NFL interception leaders.
The NFL playoff picture is becoming clearer with just two weeks remaining in the regular season. In Week 15, the Patriots punched a ticket to their 11th straight postseason. The Bears saw their NFC North title hopes dashed out like a spent cigarette. The Chiefs strengthened their case as the world’s best snow football team.
The Rams’ blowout loss to the Cowboys somehow clinched playoff spots for the Packers, Seahawks, AND 49ers. The race to the top of the AFC South may have been decided by some delightful chaos.
But Week 15 was about more than just final scores, unlikely turnovers, and playoff fates. As always, Sunday’s action created a healthy backdrop for storylines to develop and crash into one another as the league careens toward Super Bowl 54. There were several winners across the NFL landscape, and they stretch beyond the box score.
So who were the week’s biggest winners?
It wasn’t: Josh Gordon, who is not a quarterback
Gordon has been a useful, if not stellar, acquisition for the Seahawks. The former Brown and Patriot only has seven catches in his five games as a member of the team, but he’s turned those opportunities into 19.9 yards per catch. On Sunday, he was responsible for a 58-yard catch on his lone target of the day.
That wasn’t the only time Gordon got a touch against the Panthers, though.
TREBO pic.twitter.com/HNClKN5ucP
— Carolina Panthers (@Panthers) December 15, 2019
Gordon, called into duty by an overthinking-it Pete Carroll, took a reverse roughly 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage before uncorking a deep ball to a covered DK Metcalf. He blanked safety Tre Boston in the process, and the underthrown ball was quickly scooped up and turned into a Panthers possession. Carolina couldn’t do anything with the opportunity — Kyle Allen would throw an interception of his own two plays later — but it snuffed out a potential scoring drive in a 30-24 Seattle victory that was a little closer than the Seahawks would have preferred.
Now on to ...
Week 15’s actual winners
6. Younghoe Koo, who is so good at onside kicks he can recover them with only 10 guys
Koo’s introduction to the NFL in 2017 was memorable for all the wrong reasons. He didn’t make an appearance in the 2018 regular season and wasn’t signed by the Falcons to replace Matt Bryant until Week 10. In that short span, however, the former Georgia Southern standout has been solid. He’s converted 17 of his 19 field goal attempts and has made all but one of his extra points.
More impressively, he’s been responsible for two of the league’s seven successful onside kicks in 2019. He would have made it three , but the Falcons decided they’d rather play Week 15 in hard mode.
Well here's a new one! The #Falcons recover a surprise onside kick … but are penalized because they don't have 5 men on either side of the ball. Why'd that happen? Because they only have 10 men on the field. pic.twitter.com/9xui3bVl4b
— Justin Felder (@Justin_FOX5) December 15, 2019
Atlanta’s inability to put the proper number of players on the field for the kick negated its recovery thanks to an illegal procedure penalty for not having enough men on the field. Even so, it was another brick added to the legacy the young kicker is building with the Falcons. The NFL’s onside kick may be a broken play, but if Koo’s behind it, your team somehow has better than 50/50 odds of landing on the ball.
The Falcons, by the way, are now 4-2 with Koo on the roster. They were 1-7 before he arrived.
5. Stephon Gilmore, who Andy Dalton was not prepared to face
Dalton’s return to the Bengals’ lineup was the catalyst behind his team’s lone win of the season. For two quarters, it looked like he may be able to pull off another upset when he led Cincinnati to an early 10-7 lead over the Patriots.
Then Gilmore took over.
Gilmore, a $65 million signing from the typically thrifty Pats back in 2017, has emerged as one of the game’s top defensive backs over the past three years. That was on full display in Ohio.
His first interception gave the Patriots the field position that led to their second touchdown of the day. On the ensuing drive, he decided to give his offense a drive off by jumping all over a lazily thrown out route and taking another Dalton pick all the way to the end zone.
2 + 4 = 6. @BumpNrunGilm0re PICK SIX. pic.twitter.com/GDYGBQf7ih
— New England Patriots (@Patriots) December 15, 2019
In less than eight minutes, Gilmore had forced two turnovers that turned a surprisingly tight game into the blowout most people had expected. He’s now got a career-high (and league-leading) six interceptions on the year and is cruising toward a second straight first-team All-Pro selection.
He’s one of three Patriot defenders with at least five INTs this fall, alongside Devin McCourty and J.C. Jackson — the latter of whom also picked off Dalton twice. On Sunday, that group lifted New England to a playoff spot and a 21-point win, even on a day where Tom Brady threw for just 128 yards.
4. The Cowboys, who finally look like they’d like to win the NFC East
Dallas ran through the first 14 weeks of the season without a single win over a team with a winning record and was 3-7 in its last 10 games. The Rams had primed themselves for a late playoff push by upending the Seahawks in Week 14 and had won five of their last seven. These factors conspired to make LA a slight favorite Sunday afternoon, even in the unfriendly confines of AT&T Stadium.
So of course the Cowboys boat-raced the Rams right off the field.
Dallas crumpled Los Angeles into a ball and then kicked it into the trash in a 44-21 de-pantsing that finally made the Cowboys look like contenders. An often underwhelming defense allowed just seven points in the first 56 minutes before easing up in garbage time. Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott ran for 248 yards and three touchdowns between them. Tavon Austin scored the easiest touchdown of his life:
Tavon Austin really turned the Rams secondary into a Keystone Kops routine pic.twitter.com/3ekskMAl9A
— Christian D'Andrea (@TrainIsland) December 15, 2019
The win keeps the Cowboys firmly entrenched atop the messy NFC East. A similar win next week against the Eagles would clinch the division title and cool the calls for head coach Jason Garrett’s firing. The question now is whether this can last. Was the 44-point explosion the catalyst to a December rally, or just the next data point in an inconsistent season that’s jumped from highs to lows like P.T. Barnum taking a polygraph?
We’ll know more next week, but for now the Cowboys are looking like they might be more than just a sad-to-watch home underdog in the Wild Card Round.
3. Travis Kelce, who left us all with a massive, unanswerable question
Did you know Travis Kelce, star of E! Network’s non-hit dating show Catching Kelce, also moonlights as a football player? A pretty good one, too!
Kelce was the star of Patrick Mahomes’ snow-bound revival Sunday, catching 11 passes (on 13 targets) for 142 yards in a 23-3 win that flaunted the full power of Kansas City’s passing offense. It was his first 100+ yard performance since Week 2, and it helped him to reach a notable milestone. He became the first tight end in league history to have four straight 1,000-yard seasons.
That leaves us with a very important question. Is Kelce the league’s best tight end? The only other player in his league at the moment is 49ers’ Hulk George Kittle, who at one point trucked Ricardo Allen so hard that it made him laugh hysterically.
George Kittle was laughing as he pancaked a Falcons defender pic.twitter.com/spiHRh72kn
— Kevin Jones (@Mr_KevinJones) December 15, 2019
He also had 13 catches for 134 yards (and a costly fumble).
Last year, Kelce totaled 1,336 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns to Kittle’s 1,377 and five. This year, Kelce’s got 1,131 yards to Kittle’s 888 thanks in part to the injuries that cost Kittle two games. On the other hand, Kittle has caught 79 percent of his targets to get there (Kelce’s at 70 percent). Per SIS, they’ve been similarly effective in run blocking as well.
So who gets the nod? There’s no wrong answer there. If you want youth and a little extra potential, Kittle’s your guy. If you want the game-changer who has put up 33 catches for 425 yards in six postseason games, then Kelce’s the right choice.
2. Eli Manning, who god willing will go down as the league’s perfect .500 quarterback
Coming into Week 15, Manning had a regular season record of 116-117. Daniel Jones’ ankle injury gave him a glorious opportunity to even things out against the Dolphins.
Manning restored balance to the universe when he led the Giants to a victory in what may have been his last appearance at MetLife Stadium. The 2004 No. 1 draft pick threw for 283 yards and a pair of touchdowns while balancing that out with, in true Eli fashion, the bad decisions that led to three interceptions. He started the game with a standing ovation from an appreciative crowd and ended it met by his family as he walked off the field a 36-20 winner.

— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) December 15, 2019
While that threw a wrench in the team’s hope for 2020’s top overall pick, New York’s course to the No. 2 selection and a shot at Ohio State pass rusher Chase Young remains intact. If Jones returns to the lineup and this was the last we saw of Eli, he got to leave his final game a winner while still leaving his team in place to improve in the future. That’s a win/win for the Giants — which is only one fewer win than they’ve had so far in 2019.
1. Jameis Winston, who was his truest self Sunday
For the second straight week and fourth time this season, Winston kicked off his day by throwing an interception on his very first drive. Then, he snapped back to form and threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns ... in the first half alone.
Winston, playing without human cheat code Mike Evans but with a chipped bone in the thumb of his throwing hand, shredded the Lions’ defense like Crock Pot pork in a thorough 38-17 pasting. With 8:15 left in the second quarter, he had more passing touchdowns (three) than the Lions had total yards (two). He finished his day with 458 passing yards and four scores — his second straight game with 450+ yards and four TDs.
No one profited more from Winston’s massive swing than Breshad Perriman. The former first-round pick’s three touchdown catches in Week 15 were as many as he had in his first two seasons in the league.
3️⃣ ➡️ 1️⃣9️⃣ For the third time today, Jameis hits Breshad for a score! pic.twitter.com/4sMnK0QP6m
— Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@Buccaneers) December 15, 2019
He’ll have to keep coming up big if Winston’s going to keep this pace. A late injury to Chris Godwin means Tampa Bay might have to play out the rest of 2019 without either of its Pro Bowl-caliber wideouts. That could be brutal for an offense whose running game averaged just 1.7 yards per carry against the Lions.
Winston is still a deeply flawed passer — that early interception was his league-high 24th of the season — but he’s showcasing his value as he plays out the final games of his rookie contract. Performances like Sunday’s shellacking could be enough to convince some needy GM to hand him $50 million in 2020. The way he’s played lately, he could even wind up strapping in for five more years in Tampa.

Okay, so.... as a forensic scientist I wanna say..yes and no. I tried to click on the links in the original post but they led me nowhere so I can’t really speak to those. In both my master’s program and also job training at the state police, they do in fact warn you about making false conclusions due to the fact that a lot of these tests- hair tests, blood spatter analysis, etc- are based on probability and likelihood rather than matches. Therefore you can not say with 100% certainty that the DNA in a piece of evidence or a hairstrand left at the scene without a doubt belongs to the suspect. Because hair is composed of a *finite* number of characteristics and DNA is composed of a *finite* number of nucleotides, it is technically possible that two unrelated people could match 100%, even though with the billions of combinations, it has never been seen before. With blood pattern analysis, you’re pretty much making an educated guess based on previous studies and physics what weapon at what velocity at what angle could create that pattern. Nothing is certain.
But that’s all science, that’s all medicine, that’s all research. If you don’t have a fixed set of guidelines and standards and requirements, then people take short cuts, things get contaminated, bad apples fudge reports...like all occupations. And sometimes new technology comes out and shows that the previous technology was lacking or even wrong (see: the Innocence Project with the introduction of STR analysis for DNA testing). This doesn’t mean that the whole field is “bogus” as OP said. (Although the whole polygraph thing? Yeah, completely debunked. Doesn’t even hold up in court. But people are so entrenched in their ways that they want to strap heart monitors to POI to “crack a case” even when it has no merits.)
We, as individuals in a society affected by the methods used to solve crimes and convict people, but also as potential jurors that will be the ones weighing this evidence and determining if it’s enough to convict someone of a crime, need to be aware of what the conclusions *mean* and their weight. Not write off the whole field, that is arguably the most regulated and validated field after medicine and aviation. If a person is sentenced for 28 years based on dog hair mistaken for his human hair, then jurors, average citizens, need to pay more attention during the scientist testimony, and conclude that one single hair is not enough to be certain beyond reasonable doubt.
(I can’t speak to criminal profiling as that’s forensic psychology and a completely different thing entirely.)
Round-up: A Lot of CSI-Style Forensics Have Turned Out to be Bogus
Basically a lot of it is pseudoscience that was never rigorously tested in controlled situations to see if it actually worked.
This is because it was not developed by scientists, but by police, and mainly with an interest in putting people in prison rather than uncovering the truth.
At least two dozen people have been falsely convicted due to “Bite Mark Analysis”.
“Burn pattern analysis” put an innocent man to death in Texas
“Blood Spatter analysis” such as that shown on the TV show Dexter is actually completely unreliable even according to the US Department of Justice
Forensic hair comparison is also widely believed to be junk science and the FBI is currently reviewing convictions based on hair analysis due to the unreliability of their results
Handwriting analysis has an unreasonably high error rate, by some accounts as high as 43%
Lie detector tests, or polygraphs, are notoriously unreliable and based on bad science. Even though everybody knows this, they are still constantly being used in criminal investigations among other places.
Toxicology labs can be poorly supervised and badly run, producing false and even fraudulent results
Due to sloppy procedure at many labs and lack of regulation even DNA testing is often unreliable
Even when correct results are produced, genetic profiles may be less useful than we have been lead to believe
Fingerprinting analysis is not foolproof and actually has not been thoroughly tested, as this Frontline special discusses
Here are a few more articles on how unreliable modern forensics are.
Unfortunately due to TV shows that stress forensic investigation, juries are demanding this kind of evidence at trial, and have little idea of how untested and unreliable it really is.
