Early in my career, I co-founded and oversaw the title selection for WaldenEd Book Fairs, a book fair company spun off from the Waldenbooks chain. Our strategy was to differentiate ourselves from Scholastic fairs by offering a broader, more diverse, and challenging selection of titles representing a wider range of cultures and communities. It seemed only logical that to increase sales, you would want to increase the size of the audience you appealed to. Our initial plan was to launch regionally and grow slowly, but the response from schools and librarians to a title selection that mirrored the greater diversity of a bookstore serving the local community was so overwhelmingly positive that we quickly expanded nationally.
This was in the late 1980s. It would have been unimaginable to me that three decades later, Scholastic would have a marketing strategy that narrows the diversity of titles it offers and adds barriers to access titles representing any segment of the local community they serve.

How to find your best book bargain
How to find your best book bargain. #books #bookfairs #reading # MousesMusings
Not everyone is an e-reader.  Sometimes you have to have the weight and feel of a hardback or a paperback book in your eager little hands.  The smell of a book is one of the best smells in the world to a bibliophile.  Used bookstore smells?  I’d say, bottle it up and sell it but they’ve already figured out how to do that.  Candles that smell like bookstores are popular because that scent comes…

typographical ink emanates an atmosphere of intoxication
I don’t think it’s coincidental that the big international book fairs take place in early fall: Frankfurt in October, Buenos Aires in April. For me as an Italian, early fall is the season of the grape harvest: as every year the harvest celebrates the abundance of grapes swelled with juice, so the book fair celebrates the renewal of a cycle, the multiplying of volumes. The same sense of abundance and profusion dominates both types of autumn festival; the fermentation of typographical ink emanates an atmosphere of intoxication no less contagious than that of the must that bubbles in the vats.
—  Italo Calvino, from “A Book, Books” in “The Written World and the Unwritten World: Essays. Translated by Ann Goldstein. (Mariner Books Classics, January 17, 2023)

Passing the Polygraph - Books of Collections
It’s been quite a time that I’ve been obscurely dissatisfied with ordinary photographic monographs. I suppose I shouldn’t complain: I’ve written texts for dozens of them, usually as an introduction before the pictures, and usually found much to like in the pictures concerned. No doubt the good ones still keep coming; the great ones, too, and probably at the same very slow rate as ever. But I’m…

what's in a label
With the overwhelming amount of information available to us, we are more reliant than ever on categorization, labels and shortcuts- these can bring us a sense of security in shrinking the world to make it more manageable- A writer does not value safety or sameness.   A label This quote from Rick Rubin has been visiting my mind for a while. I think it has to be because I recently sent in my…

Back in the day when I worked at Waldenbooks headquarters, I spearheaded the development of a national school bookair program that paired schools with their local Waldenbooks branch. Schools loved it. This allowed them to customize their book selection to better represent the needs of their teachers, parents, and students and build a lasting relationship with their local bookstore branch long after the fair was over. This local connection to schools in their community can still happen with indie bookstores.

This November, we'll be in one of our home cities for the Boston Art Book Fair! We're super excited to return to the Cyclorama at Boston Center for the Arts. And the line-up of exhibitors continues to grow each year. Expect work from new and beloved presses, local design programs, and much more! The fair was on hiatus for the past few years, and we're looking forward to reconnecting with friends, neighbors, and new buddies in the Boston / New England area. bostonartbookfair.com

Why did no one tell me that Dracula was a fucking COMEDY.
The book opens up with Jonathan experiencing a paprika overload. Dracula pretends to be the coachman and drives Jonathan around in circles until he decides he's established enough of a dramatic atmosphere. By day three in the castle Jonathan has picked up that there are no servants and Dracula is secretly doing all the chores, including driving him there. The first time Jonathan tries to shave, the count barges into the room, yeets his mirror out the window, refuses to elaborate and leaves. Jonathan also notices that he is a prisoner in the castle but doesn't dare to bring it up, which... is a mood, but also hilarious. A week into his stay he sees his employer/kidnapper crawling facedown out a wall
