Rex is a nervous bitch

he hasnt really had a first kiss he's cared that much about since he was fourteen with Eve

and even then he was fourteen so he didn't really know how big of a deal it was

BUT this is post-lobotomy Rex

and he really likes you

and he can't mess this up

he can't "Rex it up" as Amanda lovingly put it when he begged her for help

"Pleaaase Amanda- you're a woman- kinda- you know about this romance junk!" he pressed his palms into prayer and knelt at her, shuffling towards her comedically as she rolled her eyes

"First-!" she shoved a pointed finger into his face "Don't call romance 'junk', it's annoying."

Amanda sighed a long, heavy sigh, and pinched her temple

"And two, I'm calling in reinforcements."

two hours later Rex is in his room with Mark, Eve, William, Amanda, and Rudy all piled in

Rex isn't sure why William OR Rudy are there, but he figures more the merrier

"ooookay." William starts, leaning onto his propped up knee "You've been seeing this person for how long?"

Rex swallowed his spit nervously "uhm... we've been like talking and going on dates and shit for a few weeks- uhhh..." he starts counting on his fingers before Rudy cuts him off

"Rex and Y/n have been mutually exclusive for two months and three days."

Eve's jaw goes slack "Two months?! Rex what the hell?" her scolding is teasing yet bewildered, a playful hand gesturing from its place around Mark's shoulder "Just kiss them already, why are you being a wuss?"

Rex buries his head in his hands, overwhelmed by the overlapping conversation and criticism as the room erupts into dialogue

"I JUST-" he calls out, quieting the room

"I want to make it memorable. And... special."

His face is on fire

he's blushing so hard it hurts

Okay now they HAVE to help him figure this out

so three hours of brainstorming and meticulous planning-- some light lunch and snacking-- later, Rex has a game plan

Everyone shuffles out of his room as quietly as they can, except for Eve, who tells Mark she'll catch up in just a minute

The door closes them into the same space, alone

"Oh, uh... what's up, Eve?" Rex's shoulders tensed as he took in Eve's serious expression and folded arms

She broke out in a small smile "Do you really like this person, Rex? Like you're not going to cheat and be a dick?"

He nodded a small, but intentional nod. Intimidated as fuck by his ex-girlfriend.

She responded by rushing forward and pulling him into a bone crushing hug

"oOoooo I'm so excited for you" she pulled him closer, as he slowly wrapped his arms around her in return

"Ha- Thanks, Eve. I appreciate it."

Eve pulled back and stared into his eyes intensely "Don't freak out, just be yourself, okay? I'm so happy for you, Rex."

As they separated and Eve made her way out, Rex flopped back onto his bed

He'd just received the blessing of his only true friend, this couldn't possibly go wrong.

A few days later, and you're reading in your room

a slip of paper came under the door

"Hm?" you set your book down and went to retrieve it

It was a crude drawing of the two of you-- yourself and Rex-- in the mountains?

It was hard to tell

he was not a good artist.

Regardless, you opened the door to find another piece of paper

and another

and another

all littered with doodle of the two of you, tracing through the GotG HQ to the "back door" so to speak

"Rex?" You inquired cautiously, fearful it may be a trap

"Hey!"

you flung around and caught Rex's nose in a high kick, before realizing your mistake and covering your mouth in surprise

"Ah!! Rex!! fuck- I'm so sorry!"

Rex hit the snowy floor like a crumbled piece of paper, holding his bruised nose and trying to shake it off

"iiiii'm good! I'm fine! Wuh-uhh... fuuuuck." He steadied himself by leaning onto you a little, wrapping an arm around you

You assessed the situation, thankfully not having broken his nose

"Oh Rex, I'm so sorry... and after all your hard work with those drawings.... is there anything I can do to help?"

"You can kiss it better."

The silence was thick with romantic tension, and you stared at him wide eyed while he stared back in abject horror-- at himself, not you

"No-NO! FUck- this wasn't- Ugh! Stupid- Stupid0" he groaned, sitting in the snow and leaning against the GHQ

You looked down at him, confused

He just held his bruised face in his hands "That's not how it was supposed to go."

Carefully, you sat next to him in the thick, powdery snow.

"How what was supposed to go?" you placed a loving hand on his upper arm

Rex leaned into your touch, eventually leaning his head onto your shoulder "I wanted to say all this shit about how much you mean to me- and how much of a better person I want to be for you, and all this stuff..." he pulled out snow-soggied crumpled notecards, passing the ball of paper to you as you deciphered key phrases and bullet points

He sighed again, nuzzling into your shoulder "Iwanted our firstkiss tobe special, yknow?" he looked up at you with the saddest eyes, obviously welling with tears "You deserve that much."

Now it was your turn to blush so hard it hurt

or maybe it was the cold.

"R-Rex- I don't... I mean..."

the longer you trailed off the louder the thumping in Rex's chest got

eventually, though, you spit it out

With a warm affect "Rex, you're so perfect."

and you leaned down, kissing his lips gently

He reacted swiftly, bringing his hand to your cheek, warmth bringing solace and comfort to the bitter cold threatening to permeate your layers the longer the two of you sat in the snow.

The kiss lasted what felt like forever

but in reality it was maybe three minutes

You noticed Rex opening and closing his eyes, to check if you were still there

When you finally had to part lips, Rex sifted himself up to be level with you, allowing him to wrap an arm around your shoulder and pull your head to his chest

"I really like you, Y/n. And I want to be a good guy for you."

"You are a good guy, you're the best guy I could ask for."

"No. I'm not. But don't worry, babe." his humorous tone crept back into the serious situation, easing the tension a little

"I'm going to be."

You could do all three ideas for Robot. Like it starts with the reader being into him as the machine (sexy smart Robot am I Right?) Then they find out about test tube body (omg new boyfriend form) and then he makes himself a proper body so he can experience the joys and whimsy of life (final boyfriend form).

Imagine thinking you bagged a hot robot baddie, only to figure out he's not actually a real robot but a guy(tm). A very smart guy, but just a guy. If him being a robot was one of the things you found attractive about it, then I don't think Rudy minds bringing the robot bodies into it. 

I can only assume he would have to trust you a lot to show you his true form, when he's all test tube baby looking. There would also be a fear you would find him disgusting. When it turns out you don't, then his love (and borderline obsession, cuz this guy isn't healthy) would just grow. If you thought he was protective before, then I don't know what to tell ya about after. 

The big question is. Does he still use the DNA of Rex when making this body? It would obviously be a body that matches your age. Does he spend time finding out what your type is? Who on the team you find most attractive? Or, does he use the DNA of his actual physical body and make his own healthy body?

Mild obsessed with Mercy and I wanna know more about her! What would you say her relationships with other heroes is like? Namely the current Guardians roster.

I talk about the events of the show including the latest episode (3x07) so don't read if you aren't caught up!

-immortal - bad. immortal started off with warning her that he's watching her every move, similar with mark. he doesnt trust the twins because he never trusted omni-man, and his distrust was clearly justified after the events of the first season. she thinks he's an egotistical asshole who doesn't care about anyone else because of his refusal to become attached to his teammates, he thinks she's a time bomb waiting to go off just like her dad and brother. more than anything, though - she hates that he keeps comparing her to her father. her dad is one topic that she's sensitive about and can get temperamental if he's brought up. she tries to just stay away from immortal most of the time because she's confident she'd just start fights with him every other conversation.

-black samson - okay! samson, to me, has the vibes of a guy who's trying to hold the team together as best as he can. he's a charming guy who seems to care about them, and he does his best to get to know each of them. mercy isn't part of the guardians of the globe roster, but she works with them often enough that he probably considers her an honorary member or something. mercy is pretty closed off to others trying to 'take care of her' because she's trying really hard to be seen as independent and mature, so i think she shakes his concern and compassion off most of the time. not too rudely, though - she appreciates his attempts to be friendly. she just wishes he'd be friendly in a 'this person is my ally and teammate' way instead of in a 'this is a child i need to protect' kind of way.

-bulletproof - okayish. i don't think they interact much with each other at all in the beginning. but considering bulletproof is the only other flyer that she works with on a regular basis, i think just them having convos as they fly to and from missions will go a long way to building a rapport - for no other reason than because it's something only they can do. they'd be work friends i think. getting along on the job, but not really talking much off the job. i think they could be good friends off the job too, both of them like art and being a hero, but Mercy is the one who isn't interested in getting to know him further. sorry man, let's keep it all strictly professional..

-rex - close friends. she kind of had a crush on him the first time they met, and then she realized he was dating eve so she backed off immediately. and then she learned he cheated on eve and hated him with a passion for a while. similar to immortal, she thought of rex as egotistical and a complete jerk for a long while. but of course after his near-death experience, he turned his personality around and started being less of an ass, so her opinion of him changed quite a bit. the only person on the team that Mercy actually hangs out with outside of the job - they're similar in age and can talk to each other about their struggles of being abandoned by a parent (or 2 in rex's case). i think it's interesting that they gave Rae and Rex a romance in the show, because if Rex didn't have a romance, she absolutely would have been interested in him again. Well... we know how it ends, so i guess it's better for her that she never let her feelings develop too far...

-robot and monstergirl - bunking them together because Mercy always sees them together so they're basically a duo in her mind. Robot is crazy intelligent and Mercy respects it, but his penchant to talk from multiple copies of his robots kind of creeps her out and interests her at the same time. Kinda wishes she could do that too lol. Mercy feels sympathy for Monstergirl because of her curse, and the few times they do talk they get along just fine. It's just that they don't talk often. They aren't on the same team together and they never interact outside of the job, so there's just not enough there to build a relationship of any kind off of.

-duplikate - they have an okay work relationship, but they're both headstrong people with very different views on things. i think one of them might throw a jab at the other and that's all it would take to start a fight between them. they do NOT talk outside of work, and in fact, only talk during work if they have to communicate during a fight. in the headquarters? they're not really interacting at all. Mercy rolls her eyes when she learns that Kate and Immortal are getting married because "yeah of course the asshole is marrying an asshole".

-shrinking rae - not as close as Rex, but Mercy and Rae could definitely get along pretty well. maybe if we get to learn more about Rae in the show I could see them being friends outside of the job as well, but for now they're just close coworkers.

-darkwing ii - lastly, darkwing 2. crush material, but very slow buildup. she didn't go on that mission when Mark took Darkwing in for murder, she only heard about it second-hand from Mark himself, so that might be why she's way more forgiving of his issues than she is willing to be for Sinclair(she saw Sinclair's labs and victims personally). she still thinks he's unstable in the beginning and generally avoids him for a while, which he definitely notices, but i think all it would take is one comment from him talking about his remorse for what he did, and she might be willing to stay and talk it over with him. a short debate about morals turns into a longer conversation about regrets and what they would change if they could go back... about how the things they've seen and done has changed them forever. i think the two of them could be very good friends.. and maybe more (: such a shame he disappeared so fast in the show, but maybe id change the story a little bit now that Mercy is here to save the day, heh...

Edit: I CANT BELIEVE I FORGOT SHAPESMITH.... He's my personal favorite hero on the guardians team, which of course means Ellie is going to like him too (: Another rare instance of Mercy allowing this coworker to hang out with her outside of the job. I think she'd be really interested in learning about his life on Mars, and in return she'd help him acclimate to life on Earth. Always bringing him little trinkets or candy from a dollar store, stuff like that lol. They would be the best of friends, I swear. He's not the best person to go to when she's looking to vent her frustrations about life and her issues, but he's always there to listen anyway, and she appreciates that.

What about Ruby and Amanda with a kid super reader

Of course being platonic, the reader is only comfortable being around them since they don't know that they're basically adults trapped in a kids body

Which leads to maybe them helping the reader get out of their shell more with the rest of the guardians, and they help mentor them and such, tho they do still have fun with their brutally honest antics

Just thought this would be adorable in a way

Amanda, on the other hand, is pretty good with kids

she seems like the type of person who is a nonchalant aunt

Probably doesn't see her nieces/nephews anymore due to her....condition(?)

So she's super child about things when you start clinging to her during GotG meetings

She's pretty used to handling Rudy's social incompetence, err, more accurately his anxieties and rough-around-the-edge nature

You yourself are a pretty anxious child

Kicking MAJOR ass on the battlefield, but Bulletproof asks what you think about mushrooms on the pizza he's ordering for dinner and you're like "hhhhhhhidunnomushroomssoundfine"

and you're allergic to mushrooms but wtv

Amanda and Rudy are such a unit by the time you join the GotG (around the end of s2, i'd say) that Amanda taking you under her wing means spending ample time with Rudy as well

As hard as it is for him to interact with you on your level, he finds your quietness and curiosity about the world endearing

Amanda will leave to use the restroom and come back to find you staring at Rudy while he does some weird engineering shit, just absolutely awestruck

After long enough you begin to ask question

"Uhm- Rudy..? Why are you connecting those wires like that? I've never seen you do it that way."

"Oh. This method is more efficient for...." blah blah blah blah blah

and you're paying CLOSE attention

The three of you form a tight little unit

lowkey Amanda's having just a great time fucking braiding your hair and talking to Rudy like you're their kid

not like you're THEIR KID but like

They have a responsibility to look out for you

and that's a comfortable kind of weight to carry when you care about someone

and she loves you

isn't that just the best?

Once you've found a home base in Rudy and Amanda, it becomes easier for you to interact with the other guardians

it's slow work, Rex joining you for movies here and there, occasionally Rae will ask you a question about your day or your thoughts on something and you'll choke out a real response

You finally tell everyone you're allergic to mushroom so please can we get just normal pepperoni please

Like she will whoopie cushion your ass and crack up while Rudy explains he tried to stop her

It makes you kinda raw when they go on dates and you're not invited

but surprisingly, it's less scary with them gone than it used to be

you'll be playing video games or crocheting or working out or something and Black Samson will just.... come hang out with you?

Just to have some company

Or Shapesmith will ask you questions about what human childhood is like

which is difficult to answer because you've never experienced NOT being a child

but it's a valuable experience either way

"So.... do you really lose teeth?"

"mhm!! Here look-" You opened your mouth and prodded at an empty space in your teeth with your tongue "This one finally came out after that fight on Monday, it's gonna take a few weeks for the adult one to grow in"

"Thats..... upsetting."

You grinned an awkward smile, full display of your weirdly small teeth

It made Shapesmith grateful he never experienced baby teeth

After becoming closer with you, it starts stressing Rudy out during fights

He KNOWS logically you're capable

but Amanda is right, he's responsible for you by virtue of being "the adult" and more importantly, being your adult

He starts pulling double duty to make protective wear for you

this man over her like "The padding in your knees, elbows, and skull all need to be reinforced, you could sprain your wrist, Y/n!"

"....Rudy I've had my femur snapped in half before...."

Don't remind him

He cried about it, it was so distressing to have to send an empty robot suit to fly you to the GDA hospital

Rudy never cries

but also he's a little proud you remembered what a femur was

Amanda calls you "Kiddo" but for humorous effect, its hilarious coming from her Loud House ass voice

Rudy calls your by your name, but refers to you as "the child" when talking to other people, or even a "young Y/n"

he just talks weird it isn't his fault!!

Amanda won't throw birthday parties for herself

she has a problem letting her life go well

BUT, she thinks they're important for a kid to experience

your first birthday at a Guardian is incredible

the entire HQ is DECKED in decorations

Rae and Rex team up to try and make your favorite food plus a cake

Black Samson is trying to figure out how to hook his Spotify up to the speakers

Zandale is somewhere explaining birthday parties to Shapesmith

Rudy is using empty robots to continue hanging party streamers in the rafters

and Amanda is holding a big box with your gift in it, beaming with pride as she-- solely-- yells

"Surprise!!! Open your gift!!"

She pushes it into your arms as you stumble under the weight of it

Obviously you rip into it, pulling out some vague but emotionally impactful gift

Probably some childish shit like an easy bake oven (but one Rudy tricked out) or a board game you loved or something

Padding the bottom are miscellaneous articles of clothing

You pull them out and marvel at them, but...

"Amanda these are way too big, these are like.... clothes for a teenager or an adult."

Amanda just shrugs casually "yeah, they were mine but... yknow, not like I'm gonna need them anytime soon."

There's a heaviness in the air before Black Samson yells out

"I GOT IT!!"

and music floods the HQ

A few hours later, all birthday rituals were successfully fulfilled

Most of the Guardians have trickled off back to their own lives, leaving you, Rudy, and Amanda on the couch, watching one of your favorite movies

It doesn't matter though, you're passed out curled up against the arm of the couch

Amanda sits next to you, her head leaning onto Rudy on her other side, himself leaning into her as a counterweight

it's an idyllic scene to be certain
