I wanted to share something. I don’t speak often of my personal life on this specific blog, but one aspect of Tumblr of which I’m so very grateful is the ability to forge community bonds and friendships with like-minded individuals and people of backgrounds similar to my own.

As a gay Asian man (affectionately termed “gaysian” by some), I’ve been fortunate to use Tumblr as a writing outlet, sharing my own experiences and finding common threads with individuals around the world. Out of this endeavor, I’ve become acquainted with two projects that attempt to create communities of gay Asian individuals and to spotlight their stories. 

GaysianThirdSpace (a.k.a. G3S)

Gay Asian and Pacific Islanders (gaysians) represent a unique “double minority” population in many western countries - we are not only a minority in ethnic background but also in sexual orientation. Growing up and dealing with both institutionalized discrimination and the stigma against homosexuality can be an incredibly challenging and isolating experience. Unlike many of our friends who do not share the same minority status, many gaysians lack proper role models to learn from at a critical time during the development of their self-identities. In fact, for the vast majority, our first contact with other gaysians and gay social groups are facilitated through dating apps and the clubbing/raving scenes . Yet too often, the apps and gay bars are platforms that prioritize physical beauty, instant gratification, objectification, and sexual prowess at the expense of more meaningful connections.

In light of this reality, we decided to create the Gaysian Third Space, an alternative global platform for individuals looking for Community. A Community that is a safe and supportive environment where members encourage each other to grow and mature as they explore their identity. A Community where we can share our stories and struggles on coming out, family, school/career, romance, body image, and relationships that perhaps only other gaysians can understand. A Community that gives voice to the “double minority” on timely issues because our perspective is valid and deserves to be heard. That is our vision for Gaysian Third Space.

Gaysian Diaries

In a social setting, it can be hard to open up about personal issues. I wanted to create a space where we can let our walls down and share each other’s experiences. If my story reaches even one person out there and makes them feel less alone, then I don’t regret telling this story.

I invite you all to share your stories as well. As queer and transgender API’s, our stories are largely invisible to mainstream media, online content, and even our personal conversations. We all have so many stories to share that are unique to us as individuals but still relatable to the entire community.

Hot: Next Gen business apps

Het credo there’s an app for that, geldt niet alleen voor ons privéleven. Ook zakelijk poppen voortdurend nieuwe applicaties op die het werk makkelijker moeten maken. Van Twist tot het minder bekende Amplifr. In welke richting ontwikkelen deze tools zich? En welke zijn het proberen meer dan waard als het gaat om communicatie, development en dashboarding? Onlangs gehoord van een tech-CEO: “Ik denk erover om een Slack-vrije maandag in te stellen.” Het is veelzeggend over de stormachtige opmars van de zakelijke chattoepassing. Zo’n vier jaar na de introductie maken dagelijks ruim zes miljoen mensen er gebruik van. Vriend en vijand is het erover eens dat het platform de interne communicatie menselijker heeft gemaakt. Kritiek is er echter ook: werknemers zouden er wel wat minder tijd aan mogen besteden. Het lijkt door zijn eigen succes zijn eigen doel voorbij te schieten: efficiënter samenwerken. Gartner daarentegen verwacht juist dat business-apps om diezelfde reden steeds vaker en beter met elkaar gaan communiceren. Het onderzoeksbureau voorspelt namelijk een goede toekomst voor Digital Technology Platforms, waarbij verschillende diensten elkaar binnen een platform aanvullen. Als zijnde flexibele bouwstenen die werknemers kunnen gebruiken voor hun werk. Een mix van platformen zal daarbij centraal staan: Internet of Things, Analytics & Intelligence, Information Systems, Customer Experience, en als vijfde Business Ecosystems. MASA Binnen die domeinen groeit – net als in de consumentenmarkt – de inzet van conversational interfaces, chatbots en virtual assistants. Volgens Gartner is ruim de helft van de mobile app-ontwikkelaars gericht op ondernemingen er momenteel mee bezig. Hetzij onderzoekend dan wel met pilots. Samen met AI- en Internet of Things-toepassingen zijn het de meest genoemde prominente ontwikkelingen. Die gezamenlijk weer voor nieuwe uitdagingen zorgen. Want voor een goede werking moeten deze toepassingen wel naadloos kunnen samenwerken. De marktvorser heeft daarvoor de term MASA (Mesh App & Service Architecture) in het leven geroepen: een digitale architectuur die ervoor zorgt dat software gebruik kan maken van de functionaliteiten van andere gespecialiseerde applicaties. Zoals een personal assistant die via een API informatie ophaalt bij een verkeersapp of verdere integratie met slimme fysieke objecten. Geheel nieuw is dit uiteraard niet. MASA wordt dan ook vooral gezien als een logisch vervolg op eerdere ontwikkelingen. De afgelopen jaren zagen we immers ook al de integratie van apps van verschillende makers. Denk aan Uber dat de synergie zocht met apps die eveneens waarde toevoegen rondom een reis. En Albert Heijn dat zijn Appie-app op termijn ziet uitgroeien tot een ‘web of apps’. Gemak Wanneer zakelijke apps niet out of the box met elkaar praten, worden ze vaak al zo geconfigureerd dat ze aanvoelen als één grote toolset, blijkt uit reacties van de werkvloer. Binnen development bijvoorbeeld door acties te linken aan issues, code op de achtergrond te testen en geïntegreerde links naar een designdocument of projectplan toe te voegen. Waarbij een overlegtool als HipChat zo is in te stellen dat als er gepraat wordt over bepaalde knelpunten, er direct een samenvatting van het issue zichtbaar is. Het resultaat: een stuk minder zoekwerk en meer gebruiksgemak. En dat is uiteindelijk waarvoor bijna alle zakelijke toepassingen bedoeld zijn. De apps: Amplifr Wat: socialmediaplanner Alternatief voor: HootSuite, TweetDeck Socialmediakanalen onderhouden is een dagtaak geworden. En is serious business, met zo concreet mogelijke doelstellingen. Het verbaast dan ook niet dat er legio schedulers en planners op de markt zijn gekomen die het socialmediabeheer eenvoudiger maken. Amplifr, van de Russische ontwikkelaar Evil Martians, valt hierbinnen op door zijn veelzijdigheid. Niet zozeer door de planningsmogelijkheden, als wel door het uitgebreide aantal kanalen en analytics-opties. Buiten voor de hand liggende kanalen als Facebook, Twitter, Instagram en LinkedIn zijn bijvoorbeeld ook Pinterest, Telegram en het Russische socialmediaplatform VK te bedienen. Analyses vinden vervolgens plaats op drie niveaus: per post, in een dagelijkse overview en een dashboard voor langere termijn. Waarbij per post te zien is hoeveel omzet deze genereerde. Middels AI worden ook voorspellingen gedaan. Wat mogelijk is door – behalve doelen uit Google Analytics te gebruiken – unieke identifiers toe te voegen aan links en daarmee de conversie en traffic te volgen. En dat vanaf vijf dollar per socialmedia-account per maand. Wie geen behoefte heeft aan diepgaande statistieken en zijn kanalen vooral zonder al te veel zorgen wil vullen, kan eens kijken naar MeetEdgar. Deze Amerikaanse tegenhanger is beperkter in kanalen, maar biedt de mogelijkheid om posts automatisch te ‘recyclen’, zodat nieuwe niet altijd nodig zijn. StackShare Wat: Softwareontdekkingsplatform en community Alternatief voor: niet van toepassing Met welke vijftig services runt Airbnb zijn business? En welke 31 zijn afdoende voor Spotify? Op StackShare laten bedrijven zien welke toepassingen ze gebruiken om hun werk te doen. Een tool over tools dus. Die met name interessant is voor developers. Zo worden onder andere infrastructurele, communicatie- en containertools besproken. Het in San Francisco ontwikkelde platform startte als zijproject om zelf meer inzicht te krijgen welke zaken nodig zijn om apps te bouwen. In enkele jaren is het echter uitgegroeid tot een groeiende community van zo’n honderdvijftigduizend ontwikkelaars, engineers, CTO’s en oprichters. Die de geverifieerde stacks van ruim zevenduizend bedrijven becommentariëren en elkaar van tips voorzien. CEO en oprichter Yonas Beshawred wijt het succes voor een deel aan de strijd om talent. Bedrijven die laten zien welke tools zij gebruiken, hebben volgens hem een grotere kans om developers binnen te halen die goed ingevoerd zijn in de betreffende technologieën. Bij stacks voor developers alleen hoeft het wat Beshawred overigens niet te blijven. Van marketeers tot onderwijzers; iedereen zou inzicht moeten krijgen in de tools die hij of zij kan gebruiken. Wellicht dat dit met de anderhalf miljoen dollar die StackShare vorig jaar van nieuwe investeerders ontving, ook echt gaat lukken. ClickMeeting Wat: platform voor webinars/video conferencing Alternatief voor: Skype, Google Hangouts, Adobe Connect Een toepassing voor wie zijn videocalls en webinars wat professioneler wil aanpakken. Met de mogelijkheid om meetings te plannen, audio en video te streamen, je beeldscherm te delen en dit alles in goede kwaliteit op te nemen. Desgewenst vanaf een smartphone. Waarbij maximaal duizend deelnemers kunnen aanhaken. ClickMeeting ziet onder andere toepassing in onboarding- en trainingssessies. Hierbij is het bijvoorbeeld mogelijk om zaken uit te leggen via een virtueel whiteboard, gebruikers gezamenlijk oefeningen te laten doen en een gemodereerde chat op te zetten. Of je kan deelnemers al voordat een meeting begint bij een onderwerp betrekken middels een wachtkamer met daarin informatie over de sessie, waarbij belangrijke documenten alvast gedownload kunnen worden. De makers hebben ook voor de nodige statistieken gezorgd. Van gebruikersstatistieken (zoals aantal, land, apparaat) tot uitslagen van polls en de beoordeling van en feedback op een sessie. Voor webinars vanaf 25 deelnemers moet in oplopende mate wel betaald worden. Ook is er een enterpriseversie beschikbaar, waarbij de tool in een persoonlijker jasje gestoken kan worden om aan te sluiten bij de merkbeleving van de gebruiker. ClickMeeting stelt reeds ruim honderdduizend klanten te hebben, waaronder Siemens en Subway. Twist Wat: Asynchrone chat-app en samenwerkingstool Alternatief voor: Slack, Microsoft Teams, Workplace by Facebook ‘We’re making a bet against real time team chat apps.’ Met die woorden hebben de makers van takenlijst-app Todoist een eigen samenwerkingstool ontwikkeld. In eerste instantie om zelf van Slack af te kunnen stappen, maar sinds dit jaar is de toepassing vrij – en gratis – te gebruiken door iedereen. “Het product Slack was niet het probleem. Dat is perfect ontworpen en gebouwd voor wat het doet: real time messaging voor teams. Het probleem is real time messaging zelf”, aldus de makers. Leidend daarbij is het besef dat op de gebruikelijke platformen uiteenlopende onderwerpen samensmelten tot één lange conversatiestroom. Waardoor informatie volgens de makers niet alleen snel ondersneeuwt, maar gebruikers ook verslaafd gemaakt worden en kanalen constant checken op nieuwe ontwikkelingen – niet in de laatste plaats getriggerd door de vele notificaties die men ontvangt. En dus kiest Twist ervoor om gesprekken per topic in ‘draadjes’ te sorteren, zoals we dat nog kennen van online fora. Zodat je als gebruiker rustig aan het werk kunt gaan en je je geen zorgen hoeft te maken dat je een onderwerp mist. En dat met zo min mogelijk notificaties. Doordat de threads (eenvoudig) doorzoekbaar zijn, dient het platform tevens als kennisbank. InVision Wat: Testtool voor webdesign Alternatief voor: Marvel, Adobe XD Het ontwerp van een website testen, voordat er ook maar één regel code is getikt. Met deze software is het mogelijk om animaties, bewegingen en transities toe te voegen aan je ontwerpbestanden. Zodat statische schermen clickable, interactieve prototypes worden. Met ruim drie miljoen gebruikers is Invision geen onbekende in de business. Onder andere PayPal, Evernote, Amazon en Adobe maken er gebruik van. Maar de voortdurende toevoeging van nieuwe mogelijkheden verdient de aandacht. Er wordt contant gesleuteld aan de workflow van ontwerpers, ontwikkelcollega’s en klanten, gericht op het eenvoudig delen van en feedback geven op ontwerpen. Zo is begin dit jaar de integratie met Sketch gerealiseerd om eenvoudiger transities en effecten te kunnen testen. Volgens CEO Clark Valberg wordt de tool ook steeds vaker buiten designafdelingen gebruikt. Denk aan een CFO die het gebruikt om feedback te geven over een specifieke paymentstroom die voorheen zelfstandig door developers werd gebouwd. Een eerste prototype is gratis, daarna gelden verschillende betaalplannen en is er een enterprise-editie beschikbaar. In the last couple of years, design systems have taken big companies ranging from Airbnb to IBM by storm, and for obvious reasons. The dream is to create a set of shared design elements—ranging from the design of a hamburger menu to the grid options of a webpage—and standardize them in such a way that designing becomes less a matter of pushing pixels and more like picking out the right Legos. That way, designers can spend less time futzing with visual design and more time focused on solving actual problems.

But it’s one thing to create those systems and another to manage them. That’s why Airbnb and Facebook have spent countless hours creating their own tooling systems. Today, InVision is announcing the InVision Design System Manager, aimed squarely at the myriad companies with beefy design and development teams which nonetheless have hit a wall in trying to build out their own design systems. It will be open for trials starting in December.

Introducing InVision Design System Manager

The new product builds upon one created by a company called Brand.ai, which InVision quietly acquired two months ago. It works as a plug-in to Sketch or the recently announced InVision Studio. With it, designers can access a list of shared elements stored in the cloud, and then drag and drop those into a design they’re working on. If they do alter those elements, those changes can be managed and synced with the original files. These were already features of Craft, InVision’s Sketch plug-in, but DSM has a number of features such as version control and permissions which make it a tool better suited to large teams. On top of that, the library of shared elements is used to automatically generate a website that contains all the elements, which developers can readily access.

Thus, according to InVision, using and updating the pieces of a design system becomes a simple part of the design and development workflow. The company spoke to Co.Design exclusively about the new launch.

Strange Beginnings

Brand.ai has that funny name because the company didn’t start out working on design systems. It originally set out to make a tool that could automatically generate a logo if you gave it high-level brand values, such as “fun” or “sporty.” The team quickly realized that semantic information wouldn’t be enough and that it would need to pull in the company’s style guide to serve as data for a new logo. That’s when they hit a snag.

“We saw companies building those style guides using different tools. Even big companies were using Dropbox to share sketch files,” says Ehud Halberstam, Brand.ai’s founder. But even if a company intended to create one single element that everyone might use, such as a canonical “Buy” button, it was almost impossible to notify the entire team of developers and designers when that Buy button had been updated. “Even for teams like eBay who had already bought into the value of design systems, actually adopting them and using them day-to-day was viewed as a distraction,” Halberstam explains. “That’s the problem we set out to solve.”

One major facet of the problem was integrating both development and design—because design and development don’t quite work the same way. “Companies have touted before that they’re making a GitHub for designers,” points out Clark Valberg, InVision’s CEO. “The metaphor works loosely. But almost all the details do not. Ehud took the approach of looking at what the actual challenges are.” For example, designers, unlike developers, don’t want strangers copying their designs. “Open source” in the design world is known as “stealing.” Version control is another issue. Designers don’t want some random person from marketing to be able to change the color scheme of their UI elements, and then push those changes to the whole organization. Permissions have to be managed in a way that’s slightly different than mere pull requests.

Thus, one key feature of InVision DSM is that permissions are team-based rather than generic—instead of assigning someone Admin or Edit privileges over everything, they can be assigned based on individual collections of assets, so that, for example, an iOS designer can own the iOS designs without anyone futzing with them.

Learning From The Giants

Many of the nuances of InVision’s new Design System Manager spring from the hundred-or-so companies that Brand.ai talked with when developing their system. For example, Facebook’s design team shot down Halberstam’s assumption that a design team would want to separate their nice, perfect documentation of their design system from the actual production files used to create them. Better to keep all the comments about how the files were meant to be used and why they looked the way they did in the actual product files. Thus, with InVision DSM, the comment threads can be accessed when you’re clicking on an asset that you’re using in Sketch. The idea of being able to set permissions on a team-by-team basis came from insights lent by NewsCorp and ZenDesk.

DSM also comes with features meant to plug into the development workflow. Ordinarily, designers hand developers a Sketch file, which the developer tries to translate into code using their own judgment and inspection tools such as X-Scope. InVision DSM hopes to handle that by translating every element inside a design library into automatically-generated CSS class names with corresponding property values. These can be accessed via a SASS file and an API call. What the developer does with it is up to them, Halberstam points out. The idea is to finally alleviate the pain of a designer having to tell a developer every time a color’s been updated.

That’s a capability that will surely give developers and designers hives over the potential for hiccups in translating Sketch files to CSS. But it’s one that Halberstam says presents the most opportunity, given how divorced the design and coding processes still are. “The reason for joining InVision was the realization that there’s so much opportunity given how many steps there are between design and development,” he says.

Apple has finalized a deal to acquire Workflow today — a tool that lets you hook together apps and functions within apps in strings of commands to automate tasks. We’ve been tracking this one for a while but were able to confirm just now that the ink on the deal is drying as we speak.

I haven’t been able to get financial details for the deal, but if I come up with them I’ll update.

The app was made by a small team that includes Ari Weinstein, a former iPhone jailbreaker. I’ve been following his efforts since the iPod Linux days and covered his very useful DeskConnect app a few years back.

Workflow has been around for a couple of years and we’ve covered it and its updates. It shares some similarity with the service IFTTT, in that it allows people to group together a bunch of actions that can allow them to perform complicated tasks with one tap. It had built up a sizeable number of users and downloads over the past few years.

Workflow the app is being acquired, along with the team of Weinstein, Conrad Kramer and Nick Frey. In a somewhat uncommon move for Apple, the app will continue to be made available on the App Store and will be made free later today.   

“We are thrilled to be joining Apple,” said Weinstein in a statement. “We’ve worked closely with Apple from the very beginning, from kickstarting our company as students attending WWDC to developing and launching Workflow and seeing its amazing success on the App Store. We can’t wait to take our work to the next level at Apple and contribute to products that touch people across the world.”

This is not a ‘pure acquihire’ in that Workflow — not just the talent — is being purchased in this deal. This makes sense and I’m glad to see it because Workflow itself was a prime meat example of how to find a need in the iOS ecosystem, tackle it in an interesting way and execute it with cleverness and attention to honoring the platform. Simply put it’s super smart, really well designed and works very well. 

Workflow won an Apple Design Award in 2015, with Apple Accessibility engineer Dean Hudson waxed ecstatic about the way that it handled accessibility. “When I first saw the app, I was just like man, this accessibility is cray-cray. This is off the charts!”

Apple confirmed the deal, and has said the following about Workflow:

“The Workflow app was selected for an Apple Design Award in 2015 because of its outstanding use of iOS accessibility features, in particular an outstanding implementation for VoiceOver with clearly labeled items, thoughtful hints, and drag/drop announcements, making the app usable and quickly accessible to those who are blind or low-vision.”

The accessibility features of Workflow are super impressive, especially for an app that is a tool for building complicated macros. It would have been much easier to say hey, this is for heavy users maybe we don’t need to make sure it’s 100% accessible — but they didn’t, and they won a bunch of awards (and an exit) for their trouble.

Workflow’s existing integrations with apps are extensive and will continue to be updated. You can see some of the pretty intense capabilities of the app in this post from Federico Viticci, a workflow maniac.

The special sauce of Workflow is that it enables users to dip into specific ‘deep linked’ functions of individual apps and connect those actions together into a string of seamless, invisible commands. If that sounds familiar then you might be thinking of the budding Siri API — which will only be getting more beefy as time goes on.

If you spool out the thread here it’s not hard to see Workflow being integrated heavily with Siri, allowing even more seamless activation and composition of actions now that the team has access to Apple’s private APIs, which are more robust than the tiny bit of Siri that’s public so far.

There are also great opportunities here to offer value-add ‘power user’ capabilities to the iPad ecosystem. Apple’s efforts to get people to see the iPhone, iPad and even Apple Watch ecosystem as something that can be used for many light-to-medium tasks could be bolstered here.

The Workflow app for Apple Watch is especially clever and a nice organic fit — I’ve long been a proponent of the ‘1.5 seconds or bust‘ interaction model with Apple Watch. Workflow’s ‘endpoint’ is a single tap or automated action that can ‘hide’ a complex system of commands or interactions underneath it — ideal for Apple Watch.

Workflow’s acquisition is a fairly crisp example of the kinds of app successes that have become a bit more muddied in this age of services. A small, clever team built a tool so useful on iOS that Apple itself essentially copped that they couldn’t do it better and bought it. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.
