FORWARD Forum: a unique gathering in support of innovation in SMEs
17.04.18 - EPFL, PME Magazine and Le Temps are hosting a new type of forum aimed at supporting innovation in Swiss small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). This inaugural event will focus on the challenges SMEs face in digitizing, with a busy program of workshops, displays and demonstrations of actual progress achieved by SMEs with the support of EPFL and many other innovation partners. With more than 850 participants signed up for this year’s first edition, the FORWARD Forum is set to become a landmark innovation event for Swiss SMEs. It is designed to serve as a catalyst for innovation initiatives among SMEs in all sectors and industries, and this year it will focus on digitization support. SMEs are hard to categorize, but many of them share certain features. The vast majority lack the internal resources they need to innovate, as their managers are forced to juggle priorities while keeping an eye on the competition and on changing market expectations. Professor Marc Gruber, EPFL’s Vice President for Innovation, notes that “in an already complicated situation, the advent of the digital age doesn’t make things any easier. And as their environment grows increasingly complex, SMEs are running up against unprecedented challenges. In this, EPFL has a lot to offer SMEs, which can use our expertise to effectively leverage innovation.” FORWARD Forum – supporting and encouraging innovation in SMEs Drawing on their experience in supporting innovation in companies, EPFL’s Vice Presidency for Innovation and its SME Unit, working in conjunction with the Alliance program, have responded to this situation by creating a new type of forum in partnership with Le Temps and PME Magazine. It will focus on three main areas: 1. the experiences of innovating SMEs across all sectors, whether tech or not; 2. SME innovations that emerged out of collaborative projects with researchers or companies; 3. innovation support offered to companies. The objective, as noted by Roland Luthier, the director of Alliance and head of the SME Unit at EPFL, “is to show through concrete examples that SMEs intent on innovating and willing to invest time to learn about existing tools can benefit from the support ecosystem offered by EPFL and, more broadly, by many other research institutes, universities and organizations.” Inspiring examples of digital innovation, and more Digitization has naturally emerged as a major issue. The Forum, rather than addressing the issue with broad brushstrokes, will explore possible digital innovations through a series of topic-specific workshops. These topics include transforming traditional companies, the value of the IoT for products, the added value of data mining, cyber security, training employees in digitization, and digital marketing. A major study commissioned by the Canton of Vaud, one of the event’s partners, will also be presented. The study provides, for the first time, quantitative data on the canton’s strengths and weaknesses in the realm of digitization. “If you look at agriculture, tourism, public transport, health care and manufacturing,” says Alain Jeannet, who is in charge of events for Le Temps and PME Magazine, “it is clear that every sector of the economy and of society is affected by digitization.” Nearly 90 speakers, including SME representatives, experts and innovation visionaries, will share their firsthand experience. The workshops will feature a wide range of SMEs, including Laurastar, Géosatis, Aeschbach, Pomoca, Naef Immobilier, AISA, Swisstranslate and Distillerie Louis Morand & Cie. Speakers include Behshad Behzadi, who leads the team that is developing Google Assistant, one of the California-based company's most innovative and complex projects, and Bruno Bonnell, the pioneering serial entrepreneur in the robotics industry and a French parliamentary deputy from the political party La République En Marche. They will discuss their vision of the digital transformation of the economy. Participants can also attend sessions on best practices in the areas of collaborative innovation and boosting innovation capacity in SMEs. The program includes workshops on how to run collaborative projects and the possibilities offered by Master’s projects in companies, along with numerous opportunities to recruit graduates, students and experienced alumni. Throughout the day, SMEs’ experiences will take front and center! Mediacom http://actu.epfl.ch/news/forward-forum-a-unique-gathering-in-support-of-inn (Source of the original content)

Damaged Hard Drive Due To Smoke
A damaged hard drive is bad news. You want to avoid that as much as possible. There’s a pretty good chance you’ll lose your data when that happens.
Your data is very important. You’d want to protect it all times. That’s the reason why it's a must to install a powerful anti-virus and a reliable backup service. Unfortunately, those aren’t enough to really protect your data. When it comes to securing your data, you need to do more than that.
However, security is a much broader category than just that, and it includes both the availability of and the integrity of your information, and a part of that is physical protection. These days, the latest risks we often hear about are things like breaches of data stored in the cloud, or compromised IoT devices. However, it is important to remember that these sorts of risks are in addition to—not instead of—other older and less “sexy” risks, such as hard drive crashes.
(Via: https://www.welivesecurity.com/2019/02/18/smoke-damage-and-hard-drives/)
The hard drive of your computer is probably the last thing you’ll ever think of. To start with, you can’t even see it. So, why bother? Well, you should because your hard drive is where all your precious data go. Your hard drive works very hard to store all your valuable data.
Conventional hard disk drives work by spinning a series of aluminum or glass platters on a spindle driven by an electric motor. And when spun up, they are going pretty fast and with incredibly fine tolerances: hard disk drives used in servers spin their platters at up to 15,000 revolutions per minute (RPM), which works out to around 150 mph (or about 240 kph, for the metrically minded). Just barely above and below these platters float minuscule read-write heads, each less than a millimeter wide, at the end of an actuator arm. How far apart do the actuator arms place the heads from the platters? As little as 3 nanometers, or about 1/25,000th the thickness of a human hair. Read-write heads themselves are so small that they are manufactured using similar technologies to those used to make CPUs. All of these parts come together in a device that looks not too different from a record player, aside from its size.
At the dawn of the hard disk drive era, the distance between the read-write heads and the platters inside the hard drive enclosure was much greater, so much so that smoke particles, often less than a micron in size, might pass between the platters and read-write heads with ease.
(Via: https://www.welivesecurity.com/2019/02/18/smoke-damage-and-hard-drives/)
So, it’s really not enough that you don’t smoke in front of your computer. Even if you don’t, there’s still a chance that smoke could get into your hard drive.
Smoke particles are some of the most damaging things that can get inside a hard disk drive. Under a microscope they often look like jagged rocks, and some of them are small enough that they can actually can get drawn in through the air pressure equalization hole and end up bouncing across the surface of the platter at high speed, causing microscopic scratches and flaking of the thin film material on the surface of the platters, which is where data is actually stored. Even with filters inside the drive assembly, the particles can still cause damage: One can imagine them impacting the read-write heads flying just a few nanometers from the surface of the platters, much like a bird or drone hitting an airplane. Not a great experience for the passengers or your data.
(Via: https://www.welivesecurity.com/2019/02/18/smoke-damage-and-hard-drives/)
Unfortunately, smoke can seep into sealed hard drives as well. To make matters worse, the signs of a damaged hard drive due to smoke are not too obvious. It takes time for them show, which is not good.
The bottom line is that smoke can damage the hard drive. However, there’s no need to worry. As a matter of fact, don’t freak out since there are https://www.harddrivefailurerecovery.net/hard-drive-failure-solutions/ that can help you out. Speaking of hard drives, here’s https://www.harddrivefailurerecovery.net/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-worlds-biggest-hard-drive/. It’s very interesting.
