This Really Ain’t It: Ali The Guru
By: Irate Specialist
October is here. Spooky szn has officially arrived. If you're looking for music to match the season This Really Ain’t It, by Ali The Guru is the perfect place to start. Even though the cover art is IT themed. Ali’s not clowning around when it comes to the bars on this EP. He packs the EP with bumping beats and clever bars to grow hype for his upcoming album. This Ain't It the project preceding this one was a substitute for the album's original release date “I was supposed to drop my album on my birthday, but I didn’t cause of technical difficulties,” Ali says "Then I dropped the second part of This Really Ain’t It cause it still isn’t my album.” Despite all the technical difficulties the album is coming soon and these EPs serve as a great preview to what I’m sure will be an awesome project.
On the first track "Omen," Ali channels his higher lyrical powers to give us a dark sound that makes you feel like you need to keep grinding. When Ali calls himself a token on the track it’s not just due to the dark vibes he cultivates in his music. He’s also considered to be in tune with the supernatural. “I might call something right before it happens, a lot of family members call me an empath, says Ali. “So I’m living for the now. Now. But I’m also thinking steps ahead.” For Ali steps ahead involve grinding till he can ball like he’s got it all.
The second track "What You Want" is a super fun song where Ali just has fun while still asking the haters, 'Whatchu want?!' “It’s just a fun song to listen to. Something that people can listen to,” said Ali “I just needed something out there that everybody could fuck with.” The bassy instrumental in What You Want, poduced makes you instantly want to start moving. First you start bopping your head, then your shoulders, then your knees and toes and eventually you’ll be up dancing with yourself in the mirror.
"Electric," the last track on the EP, really just charges you up with great energy which was Ali’s goal for the song. “It’s electric, that the feeling I got when I first heard it,” says Ali. “And then I was also think about schemes that come with electricity and technology.” Ali makes this intention clear from the hook which contains a whole bunch of electricity references. For example; I’m electric watch me do the electric slide now.
For the full hook break down check out the Music and Mindfulness Podcast, Episode 19. The dark vibes, and supernatural level of clever lyricism make this the perfect project to fuel your spooky szn shenanigans.
So go bump This Really Ain’t It by Ali The Guru and if someone starts bothering you while doing so ask them Whatchu want?!?!
