THE LUNCHBOX💌
a movie or a film. calling it a film would be much appropriate. first of all i love irrfan khan and it saddens that he isn't alive anymore. his acting is always so raw, so alive and so realistic. he's the greatest. now this film. the lunchbox. i like the details in the film like the doormat, the lunchbox, the ceiling fans and the office and the letters. all of them show the art of middle class people. i like how iila says "mrs deshpande's husband is always looking at the ceiling fan and my husband at his phone" to which irrfan replies in a letter that if he woke up and instead of seeing ceiling fans he saw the real world, he would go back to watch the ceiling fans. because of how complicated and fast the world has gotten. irrfan says "when my wife died she got a horizontal burial cot.i tried to buy a burial cot for me the other day and what he offered me was the vertical one. ive spent my whole life standing in buses and trains and now I'll have to stand even when im dead!". so beautiful.
i like how illa says "it takes courage to jump from high buildings and die". i like how she talks about the pain that woman and her daughter had to go through, the moments before they died. the moment when the daughter trusted her mother and knew that they're not going to die. but they did die. it takes courage to end one's life. it takes a lot of courage.
"things never are as bad as they seem"
i like how irrfan talks about his dead wife to whom he loves still very dearly. he stays up all night to watch the recorded shows his wife used to watch. he recalls how when she was alive, she'd keep watching the same show again and again and laugh her heart out. he says only if he kept stealing glances of her while laughing.
i like how irrfan says that "we forget things if we dont have anyone to tell to". so true. he reminisces about his old friends and his old schools and how none of them are there now, but some things like the hospital where his mother father wife died and the old post office, all of them are still there. we all need people to whom we can share things. things which are not extraordinary but very common like identifying yourself in a painting painted by a guy on the roadside.
irrfan(named saajan in the movie) writes illa that he couldn't meet her in the restaurant because he felt old, he never knew when he got old. maybe a day before. maybe in the morning. or maybe when he was asked to sit in a crowded train because he looked old. to him illa was beautiful and young and he couldn't gather the courage to go upto her and tell her how much he liked her but he felt old. he felt old. he felt unfit for someone like illa.
at the end she writes her last letter to saajan/irrfan saying that she leaving for bhutan. that she stood up for herself and her daughter.

In another session, museum curator, art historian and Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge, Luke Syson, will talk of Leonardo da Vinci's reputation as an inventor and scientist, and the complexity of his creativity and personality that have sometimes almost overshadowed the importance of his aims and techniques as a painter. Pulitzer Prize winning writer Kai Bird will speak at another session on his writing life and literary journey. Famously co-authored with the late Martin J. Sharmistha Mukherjee’s remarkable biography Pranab My Father: A Daughter Remembers offers a fascinating glimpse into the illustrious life of Pranab Mukherjee, former politician and the thirteenth President of India. In this session, Sharmistha will talk about her workaholic and devoutly religious Baba who narrated events in the spirit of adda at the dinner-table and who never tried to impose his faith or beliefs on her.
The poet who wins every heart - Gulzar Saab - continues to create magic with each new poetry collection, interweaving the allure of old favourites through verse. Translated by award-winning translator and writer, Rakhshanda Jalil, Baal O-Par is a definitive collection of Gulzar Saab's poetry comprising the complete text of six volumes of poems. Together they will take us through this masterpiece, offering a kaleidoscopic view of history, human experience, and poetic expression.
The Festival will also feature Fashion Designer Tarun Tahiliani. His creations navigate sartorial histories, from the lens of the impact of globalisation and colonisation on attire to the revival of long-forgotten techniques. His book, Journey to India Modern, written with investigative journalist Alia Allana, reveals the paths he takes for his craft, and the significance of his luxury design studio in today's world. In conversation with television anchor and fashion consultant Ambika Anand, Tahiliani will share insights into his explorations in fashion around the globe, his efforts to merge stories across time and space, and the questions he seeks to pose through his designs.
The Festival will also delve into spiritual histories. The sacred terrain of the high Himalaya has a timeless tradition of spiritual and mystic quests. How do enlightened masters become an enduring and living presence for religious and spiritual communities? Celebrated academic and writer Andrew Quintman has written extensively on the Tibetan master and spiritual poet, Milarepa. Actor and writer Kelly Dorji is a practising Buddhist. His book, The Hidden Rainbow, makes an attempt to take us on a spiritual journey through Buddhist symbolism in the quest for inner peace and acceptance. Together, they will discuss the literary representations of Milarepa's life and consider the manifold ways in which these life stories move beyond the written page into artistic, ritual and lived dimensions. This session will also include the launch of the Hindi edition of Mystics and Sceptics: In Search of Himalayan Masters.
Leading classicist and cultural commentator Mary Beard’s recent book, Twelve Caesars: Images of Power from the Ancient World to the Modern, explores how Roman art has shaped the Western world’s understanding of power for over two millennia. Examining the relationship between ancient imperial imagery and the modern visual imagination, Beard will take us through the images of Roman emperors, especially the ‘Twelve Caesars’, from the ruthless Julius Caesar to the fly-torturing Domitian, to understand their modern significance. In conversation with historian, writer and podcaster Tom Holland, she will discuss changing identities, deliberate misidentifications and the often-uncertain representations of authority.

RAJESH KHANNA'S NOVEL, SUPER-APPEALING, LOTS ELEVATING, AIR-TIGHT SCRIPTS!
Both R. D. Burman & Irrfan Khan, as internationally popular celebrities, are both accurate in saying that Rajesh Khanna's films had a very engrossing script & story board, without exception, all throughout his 25-30 yr lead career, his career most uniquely spanning a unique hold over 4 distinct decades of Hindi Cinema!
For if just make a cursory gross study of Rajesh's films alone, will find only ONE occasion when his films had continuity issue, a regular feature with most artists films especially through the haphazard 80s, that being for his 1986 starrer 'Nasihat' co-starring Shabana Azmi, that too only nearing the climax!
And if venture a deeper study, that bear enough richness embedded to allow several Ph.D's on Rajesh Khanna's film scripts alone!
Right from the beginning -From the superhit 1966's 'Aakhri Khat', a Oscar entry from India, India's 'Baby's Day Out' 30 yrs before the US blockbuster, with an additional spiritual angle inadvertently bringing the baby home literally to his father's lap, the hero & God's statue consecrated in the same room of the house where eventually found!
Followed by the much under-discussed 'Baharon Ke Sapne' with Khanna as the jobless youth in an era of widespread societal unemployment, turned socialist union leader, that eventually gets caught in big shot games, only to end up giving his life preventing the principles of socialist politics turning sour, at hands of capitalist subterfuge.
Then ofcourse the magnum opus 'Aradhana' on concept of sacrifices being eventually rewarded in God's good world, with Khanna of course as the never-before or after double-roled dream hero. 'Ittefaq' next with the murder-accused Khanna brilliantly solving the super-complicated, twisted & heavily nuanced conspiracy while on the run himself. And the evergreen 'Do Raaste''s family drama, of a joint family broken by one bad apple in form of a discordant bahu/daughter-in-law, a sad decline that abates, when family finds the natural inner calling to bind together when faced with outside attacks, whatsoever there own internal issues be, thus positing a natural & real endorsement on India's age-old large non-nuclear family system.
Then arriving a super-entg & under-appreciated 'jalebi script', among the first in Bollywood, in form of 'Doli', on problems posed by India's dowry system, of 2 college-friends Rajesh & Prem Chopra, slated to marry on same day, Rajesh's family cutting ties with the bride's family at the altar, as police arrives to search for bride- theft-accused manager father, whose money drawn from bank for salary-payments to his boss's staff, is stolen enroute by father of Prem's to-be father-in-law, who steals it to fulfil the dowry demand from Prem's family. Rajesh's once-to-be-bride, who's face too Rajesh hasn't seen, vows to humiliate Rajesh the same way his family has, once they relocate to new place & accidentally find Rajesh having moved to same town, & starts a love affair with him. Meanwhile Prem goes abroad, & returns now a spoilt westernized man, who hires Rajesh's once-to-be bride as secretary only to attempt to bed her, a design she foils by replacing hrslef with Prem's real wife, he's left by now, every night. Prem's wife gets pregnant, is accused of bigamy, & then is the conundrum revealed, in a fiesty climax, bringing everyone together in the end.
Followed by a super-entg Tom Cruise styled face-changing sleuth mystery thriller 'The Train' in 1969 itself, with Rajesh as the head cop busting a nationwide scamming network, after 2 fantastically arduous hours of masala entt with oodles of romance, thrill & smarts thrown in for good measure. .. Then the Manmohan Desai fun-fest 'Sachaa Jhutha' with a superbly layered dialogue-script of 2 lookalikes, one a big world don, & the other a village bumpkin, & how the latter is conned into working for the don as his replacement, & how the villager's entire family gets kidnapped into the plot, with the bumpkin coming out on top with great elan by the end! .. And then a poignant spiritualistic arty life drama called 'Safar' of a young female doctor, caught btwn her uncontrollable spiritual friendly attraction towards a fellow medical student, who's more deeply artistic than scientifically minded, whilst also cancer-ridden, & how her life moulds itself btwn leading her life in his dying yet uplifting company & her eventual marriage to a businessman, that soon breaks up on trust grounds.
And 100's other such wonderful scripts (to be contd later).
