I don't want to reply to this on the post it's on, because it'd be getting pretty far away from the original point (that being that chromebooks have actively eroded the technological literacy of large proportions of young people, especially in the US), but I felt enough of a need to respond to these points to make my own post.
Point 1 is... pretty much correct in the context that it's replying to; the Google Problem in this case being the societal impact of Google as a company and how their corporate decisions have shaped the current technological landscape (again, especially in the US). I'd argue it's less like saying Firefox is a good alternative for your dishwasher and more like saying Firefox is a solution for climate change, but whatever, the point's the same. You can't personal choices your way out of systemic issues.
Point 2 is only correct in the most pedantic way; we both know that 'running on a Linux kernel' isn't what we mean when we talk about Linux systems. It's one true definition, but not a functional or useful one. Android and ChromeOS (and to a lesser extent, MacOS, and to an even greater extent, the fucking NES Mini) all share a particular set of characteristics that run counter to the vast majority of FOSS and even Enterprise Linux distributions. Particularly, they're a.) bundled with their hardware, b.) range from mildly annoying to damn near impossible (as well as TOS-breaking) to modify or remove from said hardware, and c.) contain built-in access restrictions that prevent the user from running arbitrary Linux programs. I would consider these systems to all be Linux-derived, but their design philosophies and end goals are fundamentally different from what we usually mean when we talk about 'a Linux system'. Conflating the two is rhetorically counterproductive when you fucking know what we mean.
Point 3 is a significant pet peeve of mine, and the primary reason why I feel the need to actually respond to this even if only on my own blog. "Linux is not a consumer operating system" is such a common refrain, it's practically a meme; yet, I've never seen someone explain why they think that in a way that wasn't based on a 30-year-old conception of what Linux is and does. If you pick up Linux Mint or Ubuntu or, I don't know, KDE Plasma or something, the learning curve for the vast majority of things the average user needs to do is nearly identical to what it would be on Windows. Office software is the same. Media players is the same. Files and folders is the same. Web browsers is the same. GIMP's a little finicky compared to Photoshop but it also didn't cost you anything and there are further alternatives if you look for them. There are a few differences in terms of interface, but if you're choosing between either one to learn for the first time you're using a computer, the difference isn't that large. Granted, you can also do a bunch of stuff with the command line - you could say the same of Powershell, though, and you don't have to use either for most things. Hell, in some respects Windows has been playing catch-up - the Windows Store post-dates graphical software browsers on Linux by at least a decade, maybe more. Finding and installing programs has, quite literally, never been harder on Linux than on Windows - and only recently has Windows caught up. I used Linux as my daily driver for five years before I ever regularly had to open up the terminal (and even then it was only because I started learning Python). I was also seven when I started. If the average teenager these days has worse computer literacy than little seven year old Cam Cade (who had, let me think, just about none to start with), I think we have bigger issues to worry about.
In my opinion, Linux users saying Linux 'isn't for consumers' is an elitist, condescending attitude that's not reflective of the actual experience of using a Linux system. To say so also devalues and trivializes the work put in to projects like Mint and Ubuntu, which are explicitly intended to be seamlessly usable for the vast majority of day-to-day computer tasks.

I did it! Installed Linux and all and I'm wondering why I never did that before XD It was actually so easy, if a little time consuming due to a human error. I used Linux Mint, the XFCE version and my computer is working like a charm! No more lags of any kind!
Just booted my old desktop computer and it's so damn slow. So I'm on my laptop putting Linux on a USB to try and reboot it from 0. I've always been interested in trying Linux to begin with, and I think now's the time to try and figure it out. I'm looking forward to learn something new!

So this week, for the first time in 5 years awhile, I updated my Linux Mint install. I spent a lot of time making it pretty and I want to share with y'all:
My install is Linux Mint 20.1, XFCE edition
The background art is Horizon by Aenami
The theme is Desert by Paulxfce, with some modifications by me - mainly changing the shape and colors of the buttons in the top right corner.
The icons are Zafiro by zayronxio, with a few substitutions from the Fluent icon theme.
Custom Firefox theme via the Firefox Color extension
#is installing linux mint time consuming? no#is fussing with icon themes#window manager themes#and all that nonsense#time consuming? YES but only if you're a nerd#anyway I am very excited and very happy#it looks so pretty!#also every website has stopped complaining about my web browser being out of date#Would i recommend Linux? well that depends on what you do on your computer#but i love it :3

A lot of us do want to use freeware and stuff but it’s always a major risk given how polluted the internet is with jerks who corrupt files/downloads and mess up our computers. Many of us don’t have the resources to mitigate every infection or loss :(
I think you're mixing up freeware and free and open source software. Freeware is monetarily free software, usually proprietary and closed source. Free and open source software (FOSS) is free (as in freedom from telemetry usually, but most of the time monetarily free too) is software that has published its code online for others to view, change, and make variations on. This causes it to be more secure since more eyes are on the code.
Always download from the original developers, which usually starts on GitHub. Here are a few links to the open source software I use every day.
OBS Studio - Good for recording and streaming footage, including screen recordings, includes plugin support, and people upload new plugins to their site constantly.
Ubuntu - I think I recommended Linux in the post you're coming from, and while switching from Windows or macOS is hard, one of the best introductions to Linux is Ubuntu or some Ubuntu based distribution, like Linux Mint.
Krita or GIMP - Part of what inspired me to make the initial post was the news about Clip Studio Paint fucking over the people who buy perpetual licenses. Krita and GIMP are FOSS and will always be free, I find that Krita is great for illustration whereas GIMP has a great background removal tool for manipulating photography.
Jellyfin - I initially recommended Plex as an alternative in the tags of the original post, I just realised that Plex is not actually open source. Jellyfin lets you store your own movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks and even playback live TV with a PC that can be as low power as a Raspberry Pi. This is to move away from streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max and Spotify that continually fuck over creators and consumers. There's even a demo of the Jellyfin UI on their website.
Firefox - This is one that probably doesn't need an introduction. The issue affecting web browsers right now is that all mainstream browsers, barring Firefox and Safari, run on Chromium, which means that Google has a massive say in how the internet is run, since developing websites for Chromium is the highest priority for a web developer. This problem has worsened with the looming Chromium update essentially disabling all adblock extensions, affecting all Chromium browsers. By using Firefox, not only do you retain adblock features, you also work against Chromium's steady march towards becoming a monopoly of the entire internet.
And finally, I want to address your claim that "many of us don't have the resources to mitigate every infection or loss". I am absolutely empathic to data loss thanks to malware, it almost happened to me a few days ago. The one thing I disagree with is the idea that unless you have a good computer, there is no way to prevent or fix data loss. If you choose to stay on Windows, be sure to frequently make system restore points in case your PC becomes unstable, and to avoid data loss, use virtual machines to test out software you don't trust before using it on your main PC. As general security advice on Windows, most antivirus is unnecessary. Windows Defender is quite good at catching malware and removing it, and installing third party antivirus more often than not just slows down your PC and tracks you.
I really hope this helps. There is a small amount of research to find good FOSS alternatives to your everyday software, and there is of course a learning curve to the more advanced software, but in general I would rate them as more secure to install than most closed source alternatives, and I believe it will benefit you and our general technology usage by a lot. If you want more open source alternatives to the software you use every day, I would recommend looking it up on alternativeto.net. I understand this was a long ass post but your concerns are frequent and valid and I wanted to just set the record straight. Ask again if you have any more questions.

There was a time back then when the command line was the only mode you can use to communicate with your system. Times have changed and GUI tools have been developed to ease the system administration task. But then, there are times that you need a low-level way to interact with your system and its components, that is the command line. The Oracle VirtualBox is a virtualization tool that allows one to run multiple VMs simultaneously. VirtualBox comes with a pretty and easy-to-use GUI convenient for managing Virtual Machines(VMs). In addition to that, there is VBOxManage, the command-line tool for VirtualBox installed by default. Aside from the two, Oracle VirtualBox offers some other tools to use to control the VM i.e the Main API, implemented using the Component Object Model (COM/XPCOM) and the web service, which maps nearly the entire Main API for web applications. These components interact as shown in the diagram below. As much as the GUI tool is easy to use, VBoxManage gives you more functionality such as: It gives one direct access to the virtualization engine It allows you to access extra features unavailable through the GUI. Ability to manage your VMs even in headless mode on servers with no GUI. Using the VBoxManage CLI is easy. Remember, all commands begin with vboxmanage and then are followed by a subcommand such as controlvm, list, etc. This guide aims to equip you with knowledge on how to manage VirtualBox VMs From Command Line using VboxManage Setup pre-reqs Before we commence on this guide, you are required to have the latest version of VirtualBox installed on your system. This can be achieved using the aid from the below guides: On RHEL/CentOS/Rocky Linux/Alma Linux Install VirtualBox on CentOS 8 / RHEL 8 On Debian How To Install VirtualBox on Debian On Kali Linux/Linux Mint Install VirtualBox on Kali Linux / Linux Mint On Fedora: How To Install VirtualBox on Fedora On Ubuntu Install VirtualBox on Ubuntu On Arch | Manjaro Install VirtualBox and Extension Pack in Arch / Manjaro Linux 1. List Virtual Machines using VboxManage Before you begin managing the VMs using VboxManage, it is important that you list and get to know the VM and their names on your system. You will notice that each VM has its own Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) which identifies the VM. vboxmanage list vms Sample Output: This command can be elongated to provide detailed information for each VM using the -l or --long flag vboxmanage list vms --long At times, you may be interested in listing only running VMs. This can be done using the command below. vboxmanage list runningvms 2. Get the VM Info usingVboxManage You can also get more information related to a specific VM such as the hardware, network, and other configuration information using the command below. vboxmanage showvminfo ubuntu20 Sample output: 3. Start and Stop a VM using VboxManage After listing available VMs on your system, you can start a VM say Ubuntu20 as below. vboxmanage startvm ubuntu20 Sample Output: This VM will now be available under running VMs as below. $ vboxmanage list runningvms "ubuntu20" 3b21f1b4-b93f-4e82-909a-47ecea31f097 Now stopping the VM, we use the controlvm subcommand, the VM name and poweroff option. vboxmanage controlvm ubuntu20 poweroff Sample Output: From the output, you can see the shutdown progress. Alternatively, you can pause a VM and resume it later using the command: vboxmanage controlvm ubuntu20 pause The paused VM will still be listed under running VMs but currently not consuming the system’s resources. Additional information will be shown such as the time when the VM was paused. vboxmanage list runningvms -l Output: The paused VM can be resumed as below. vboxmanage controlvm ubuntu20 resume 4. Create a VM Using VboxManage. Another important task when managing VMs is knowing how to create a VM and make configurations to it.
For example to create a Fedora Linux VM, run the command: vboxmanage createvm --name FedoraLinuxVM --ostype Fedora_64 --register Sample Output: Virtual machine 'FedoraLinuxVM' is created and registered. UUID: 7d2a0d73-8ff7-4379-b48b-fdfda9fbcbd5 Settings file: '/home/thor/VirtualBox VMs/FedoraLinuxVM/FedoraLinuxVM.vbox' In case you are not sure of the available OS types, check as below. vboxmanage list ostypes Sample output: Now you will have your Fedora VM created, you can modify the VM such as changing the name, assigning memory using the modifyvmsubcommand. For example, we can change the name from FedoraLinuxVM to Fedora35 as below. vboxmanage modifyvm FedoraLinuxVM --name Fedora35 Assign memory, CPUs, and the graphic controller to the VM as below. vboxmanage modifyvm Fedora35 --memory 4096 --cpus 2 --vram 20 --graphicscontroller vmsvga --rtcuseutc on 5. Set VM network usingVboxManage VboxManage can be used to update VM Network settings – e.g set network type to bridge. See an example below: VBoxManage modifyvm Fedora35 \ --nic1 bridged \ --bridgeadapter1 eth0 \ --vrde on \ --vrdeport 5001 6. Manage Storage for a VM usingVboxManage Creating the storage for the VM is a bit different, here we use several subcommands as shown. Create the storage for the VM: vboxmanage storagectl Fedora35 --name SATA --add sata --controller IntelAhci --portcount 30 --bootable on Now create the hard disk, set the disk size and attach it to the VM: First export the VM name and path for the storage disk as below. VM_NAME='Fedora35' VM_DISK=$(realpath ~/VirtualBox\ VMs/$VM_NAME)/$VM_NAME.vdi Now proceed and create the storage. vboxmanage createmedium --filename "$VM_DISK" --size 10240 --format VDI vboxmanage storageattach "$VM_NAME" --storagectl SATA --type hdd --port 0 --device 0 --medium "$VM_DISK" Mount/attach an ISO file for installation on your VM using the below steps. Export the PATH of your ISO file. ISO_DISK=$(realpath ~/Downloads/fedora-coreos-35.20210711.3.0-live.x86_64.iso) Now mount the ISO as below. vboxmanage storagectl Fedora35 --name IDE --add ide --controller PIIX4 --hostiocache on --portcount 2 --bootable on vboxmanage storageattach Fedora35 --storagectl IDE --type dvddrive --port 1 --device 0 --medium "$ISO_DISK" 7. Take and restore Snapshots usingVboxManage Taking Snapshots is a very important task in keeping systems secure. On VirtualBox, users have the ability to take and revert to snapshots whenever something unusual happens to the system. Taking a snapshot of a VM is easy. For example, I will take a snapshot of the Ubuntu20 VM and name the snapshot December 14th snapshot. vboxmanage snapshot ubuntu20 take "December 14th snapshot" Sample Output: You can later restore to the above snapshot. Ensure that the VM is stopped before you restore the snapshot. vboxmanage snapshot ubuntu20 restore "December 14th snapshot" 8. Delete a VM using VboxManage You can delete a VM if you no longer need it as below: VBoxManage unregistervm --delete Fedora35 Sample Output: 9. Get Help on VboxManage In case you get stuck when using VboxManage, you can always get help. This will provide you will the options to use and navigate along. $ vboxmanage ........ natnetwork add --netname --network [--enable|--disable] [--dhcp on|off] [--port-forward-4 ] [--loopback-4 ] [--ipv6 on|off] [--port-forward-6 ] [--loopback-6 ] natnetwork remove --netname natnetwork modify --netname [--network ] [--enable|--disable] [--dhcp on|off] [--port-forward-4 ] [--loopback-4 ]
[--ipv6 on|off] [--port-forward-6 ] [--loopback-6 ] natnetwork start --netname natnetwork stop --netname natnetwork list [] hostonlyif ipconfig [--dhcp | --ip [--netmask (def:255.255.255.0)]| --ipv6 [--netmasklengthv6 (def:64)]] | create | remove usbdevsource add --backend --address usbdevsource remove ........ Create a clone of an existing Oracle VM VirtualBox virtual machine: VBoxManage clonevm [--basefolder=basefolder] [--groups=group,...] [--mode=machine | --mode=machinechildren | --mode=all] [--name=name] [--options=option,...] [--register] [--snapshot=snapshot-name] [--uuid=uuid] ........... Conclusion. This was pretty informative! I hope you enjoyed this guide on how to Manage VirtualBox VMs From Command Line using VboxManage.

#why are yall so mad#and so fucking nasty for no reason????
People are being hostile because you’re being hostile. You came out of the gate accusing people of lying. This is an “everyone is yelling because everyone is yelling” situation, I’m afraid.
Anyway, the problems you’re experiencing just aren’t a result of firefox being bad. No major browser is that bad. I can run basically any modern browser on a 2005 Dell laptop running 2 gigs of DDR2 ram that any chromebook from the last 5 years could run circles around. If something is going so wrong that it’s destroying your machine’s ability to function, the problem exists somewhere between firefox and the underlying hardware. Chromebooks are extremely limited by design and display strange behaviours at the margins that just don’t happen with other computers.
I didn’t have a job at the time and it was the cheapest laptop available
I understand the impulse, chromebooks are very cheap, but you are honestly better off buying a refurbished laptop for the same price. If all you want is internet and basic document editing, wipe the OS and install Linux Mint, Only Office, and whatever browser you want.
Although if browser performance is important to you, you’re going to want to reconsider using firefox as firefox is the only browser that is committed to supporting ad blocking extensions, and you’d be surprised how much resources ads consume. There are chromium variants like Brave that are trying native ad blocking, but you’re definitely going to want to move away from Chrome.

FreeBSD Vs. Linux: Which One is Better?
Let’s evaluate some of these two Unix systems’ most salient features to see how they compare.
Running System
When comparing Operating Systems, FreeBSD has the advantage. This is because Linux isn’t a complete operating system. Actually, it’s a kernel. It is a typical misunderstanding for consumers to refer to Linux as a whole operating system. Typically, it is included with a Linux distribution that also contains system software and libraries. Linux is referred to as “GNU/Linux” by the Free Software Foundation because the majority of them are from the GNU project.
Several well-known Linux distributions are:
Ubuntu
CentOS
Fedora
Ubuntu Linux
Mint Linux
Debian
Cost
Due to the fact that both FreeBSD and Linux are open sources, there is a tie in this category. But be prepared to pay for accessories like hardware and support.
Both Linux and FreeBSD’s source codes are open for anybody to use, alter, share, or view. Any improvements to Linux, nevertheless, must be made available to the public. FreeBSD avoids this, which provides it a benefit to businesses wishing to utilize it in their products.
Security
Linux is somewhat less secure than FreeBSD. Security was one of the cornerstones upon which the FreeBSD project was built. Thus, it is not surprising that they have an advantage in this area. It already has excellent security protections built in.
Not that Linux isn’t very secure—far from it. You can install almost any security feature you desire because it is very flexible. But FreeBSD offers stronger security overall than other operating systems.
Support for Hardware & Architecture
When it comes to hardware and architectural support, Linux clearly wins. Linux is compatible with a wide range of systems, but FreeBSD is not. Therefore, if compatibility is an issue for you, Linux has a higher probability of working for you than FreeBSD.
The drawback of this is that Linux had to give up performance to guarantee that it would run on various devices. FreeBSD, on the other hand, doesn’t need to sacrifice performance because it only supports a small number of systems.
Given that Linux is more widely used than FreeBSD, manufacturers frequently develop hardware and software with Linux support in mind. As a result, you must think about how you want to use your system. For instance, Linux will handle graphics driver upgrades considerably more quickly than FreeBSD if you frequently require them.
Most of these differences, if not all of them, as well as FreeBSD’s support deficiencies, mostly revolve around desktop components such as peripherals and graphics cards. Given that FreeBSD is primarily a server operating system, this makes it logical.
Stability
Both Linux and FreeBSD are very reliable operating systems. FreeBSD, nevertheless, would get the nod if we had to choose one of them. This reinforces the idea that FreeBSD is more structured. The additional components a user is using may compromise Linux’s reliability. FreeBSD’s default setup is more dependable since it is a whole operating system. Stability isn’t something either lacks, though, on the whole.
Performance
Although there is no concrete proof that FreeBSD performs any better than Linux, the majority of individuals who have tried both contend that FreeBSD is superior to Linux. Another situation where Linux’s adaptability works against it is this one. FreeBSD is more efficient. This enables it to operate as intended, which leads to generally greater performance.
Compared to Linux, FreeBSD has a reduced latency time. The term “latency time” describes the interval between an interrupt and the start of the processor’s processing code. On Linux, however, most programs operate more quickly.
Licensing
FreeBSD employs a custom BSD license. Users now have unrestricted access to the operating system and are able to change the code any way they see appropriate. They can publish and share this source code if they want. Alternatively, they have the right to keep it to themselves.
Linux makes use of the GNU GPL license (General Public License). Under the terms of this license, users are permitted to alter the source code. The primary distinction is that you are legally required to share your source code if you make changes to the Linux source code. This strategy has both benefits and drawbacks.
Users cannot create a closed-source system from Linux, which is one drawback. However, one benefit is that subsequent users may build on previous efforts and advance the system. This is a key factor in why the Linux community is so active. Because most users won’t alter the source code, they won’t need to worry about this distinction.
Use FreeBSD rather than Linux if you do want to create a closed-source system from an open-source one.
Shell
From a user perspective, the majority of users would deem Linux’s default BASH shell to be superior to FreeBSD’s “tcsh” shell. This is due to the “tcsh” shell’s somewhat dated nature. On Unix systems that are compatible, the BASH shell is very flexible and lets users accomplish almost anything. But that doesn’t negate how great the “tcsh” shell is. To use it, you simply need greater information and comprehension. Finally, BASH is also simple to install on FreeBSD.
Filing system
Another tie would exist in this category. Effective file systems are utilized by Linux and FreeBSD alike. FreeBSD includes ZFS (Zettabyte file system). This method is unquestionably among the finest for long-term data storage.
It has integrated volume management. This enables users to build several file systems that share a single storage pool. It guarantees that there won’t be any data loss due to physical mistakes, improper handling, or data corruption. The default file system for most Linux distributions is Ext4. Although less dynamic than ZFS, it is remarkably stable.
Manufacturer Assistance
This round goes to Linux. Running Linux on servers is directly supported by IBM, Dell, and HP. However, these servers may also run FreeBSD, and many companies offer support for all of them. To obtain a sense of the hardware that is currently supported, you may also look at FreeBSD’s hardware suppliers.
Updates
You must take into account two main factors when thinking about updates: the updates’ convenience and the rate at which they become accessible. When it comes to convenience, FreeBSD triumphs. Users may decide which updates they want and don’t want to get. You can pick simply sub-components or just essential components like the kernel, src, and world. or choose them all. Then, applying these updates is easy.
When it comes to how quickly updates are made accessible, Linux triumphs. Open-source businesses have a lot of motivation to produce updates rapidly. As a result, they are accessible quickly after being required. The development and distribution of these updates can take longer on FreeBSD, but as both Linux and FreeBSD receive their updates from upstream projects, they usually arrive at the same time.
Package Administration
On FreeBSD, installing software packages is simple. Nearly 40,000 ports are available in the FreeBSD Ports collection and may be swiftly deployed by users and administrators. Each port includes the required changes to guarantee that the user’s system can utilize the source code.
The package managers for Linux aren’t always reliable. Some are quite good, while others are not. Everything is based on your distribution. The finest examples include:
DEBIAN PKG (DPKG)
Red Hat RPM
Package Manager Pacman
pkgsrc
Portage
Governance
FreeBSD is governed by its Core Team of nine individuals and has about 500 global committers. The master source code repositories are developed, improved, and bug-fixed by this team. Most people who commit are unpaid volunteers.
Every two years, active committers elect the Core Team members. Linus Torvalds, in contrast, is in charge of, modifies, and maintains the Linux kernel (the original creator). When it comes to new features for Linux releases, he gets the last word.
If you are interested in more articles like this, here’s one about business productivity software.

Linux Life Episode 28
Hello folks, here we are back in the world of Linux again. Been a few weeks since I last updated, afraid real life has a tendency of breaking the flow a little. So what have I been up to since the last episode.
Well I have rebuilt an i7 desktop. Its an i7 3770K, 32GB DDR3 memory, 1 TB Hard Drive, NVIDIA 630 2GB Graphics card. At the moment it’s a dual boot machine between Antergos and Windows 10. I would have Hackintoshed it but I have hit the limit of 4 entries to the Partition table so can’t add that at the moment. Well I can but it means converting to GPT which while not impossible is probably a pain in the neck.
Meanwhile on the laptop I was trying to play various games using Wine to varying degrees of success. While a lot of the earlier games I have tried have ran pretty easy even several of the Steam games which I installed from the Windows Steam version they will run but with a considerable hit of frame rates and occasional crashes.
However I did try and play a couple of newer games without success. Now obviously these were not high powered games but should have been able to run none the less.
One game I was trying to play was Yorkshire Gubbins which is a point and click adventure with very basic graphics by Charlotte Gore. If you have not tried the series start with Holy Molluscamony and then Aye Fair Lady which are both free on Gamejolt. Follow the adventures of Steggy, Bertrella and many others.
Anyway I tried to play Yorkshire Gubbins and the title screen would load but no text was displayed on screen to start the game. So off I went on a bit of a research about the internet to see if I could get some help.
I downloaded a thing called DXVK which apparently converts DirectX graphics commands into Vulkan compatible graphics. Also pulled down a front end called Lutris which would start Wine programs in a little graphical front end.
I sat and played with it for quite a while before remembering this is an Intel card not a NVIDIA one so don’t have the facility to use Vulkan anyway as it’s not part of the chip-set. So obviously I don’t solution to that at this time.
Mesa is kept regularly up to date so it’s once again the HD4000 not being up to snuff.
However I can play Thimbleweed Park which is good.
To be honest now I have the desktop it’s going to be used for games, not that I really play them much but I did spend quite a few hours playing No Mans Sky Next on it. That’s also why there was a delay to this episode ...Sorry.
Had fun with Pamac would not update Perl for a few days. Reason being I had been playing with a VM of FreeDOS and I was using libguestfs to mount the VHD as a hard drive now it used certain things that would not let the Perl update to the latest version.
By the way for all the FreeDOS VM worked it was not exactly the fastest thing on the planet so ultimately I rid myself of it. It was quite interesting I could mount VHD files but I had to be root to do so which was time consuming and a pain in the butt at the same time.
I actually have an old Pentium 2 machine I can run DOS on but I can’t be bothered to dig it out of the cupboard it lives in. Besides there is so much in there it would probably kill me first by falling on my head. Anyway back to Linux.
Sure I don’t mind occasionally sudo commanding the odd thing but this was annoying. Once I got rid of the libguestfs as I was no longer needing it. Two more Perl scripts removed which it had installed and et voila Perl would finally update.
Not all bad and removal was easy in Pamac just search for named files and mark to delete. Antergos makes things much easier, man I would find going back to something like Linux Mint nowadays.
Speaking of Linux Mint it has now released version 19 “Tara”. Apparently it now offers you restore points and backup options. Other than that not much else other than the obvious incremental program updates.
I’m sure someone will inform me I’m wrong and then send me the full change log of all the things that were changed. As I am not using Mint at this time, I really don’t care so please don’t do that.
Also had to remove Shutter which is a screen capture program due to the Perl thing and it is Perl based. Now that was a minor inconvenience as it’s what I use to grab the screens normally at the top of these articles.
Reason being it needed a module that doesn’t apparently work with Perl 28.0.1 which is the updated version. Shutter installed but every time I tried to run it I got an error message.
Who knows maybe I can fix it but for now I will have to find another program to do the job. First time I have been inconvenienced by the constant rolling release of Arch and to be honest there is probably something I can do to put it right just have not found it.
People tend to fix things in the AUR community pretty quickly so hopefully I will have it back soon.
Well that’s enough waffle for this episode so until next time... Take care

Minitube Linux 32
I’ve been a huge fan of Minitube. I use it nearly every work day to run interesting videos to give me a nice sound backdrop to work by. Mostly, I find myself playing AMVs, but I also enjoy just typing in random stuff to see what it starts playing.
However, a few weeks ago, it just suddenly stopped working. I was sad, but there was a lot of stuff going on, so I just left it broken. Today, I found the fix.
Minitube Linux
On Minitube’s install page, Flavio mentions removing the phonon-backend-xine package as a possible solution. I tried it, and it worked. Given that I don’t know what other software may rely on this, I tried reinstalling the package, and Minitube still worked. After rebooting, I found that it no longer worked again, so it seems that the package does need to stay removed. I’ve updated the following to only show removing the package.
Here’s how you can do what I did.
To verify compatibility of WhatsApp Messenger with Samsung GT-S5300 Galaxy Pocket To find Android version: go to 'Settings' - 'About the phone' - 'Android version' 2. WhatsApp Messenger is a FREE messaging app available for Android and other smartphones. WhatsApp uses your phone's Internet connection (4G/3G/2G/EDGE or Wi-Fi, as available) to let you message and call friends and family. Switch from SMS to WhatsApp to send and receive messages, calls, photos, videos, documents, and Voice Messages. Samsung galaxy pocket whatsapp.
Hopefully, you’ll be fast on your way to enjoying a fully-functional Minitube once again. If this doesn’t fix your issue, Minitube now has a forum that could help you out.
Good luck and happy Minitubing.
Did I help you?

does using a blogging site for #pastebinmonday defeat the purpose? who cares
speedrun PBs:
overall this has been a great year for me. i didn't meet all the goals i set at the start of the year, but some of them i became less invested in while developing others.
i achieved top 300 in super mario kart, which is a big deal for me considering the level of competition in that game developed over 19 years. pretty proud of that, and i know i have so much more potential to climb.
i'm pretty happy i got a bunch of people to run crystal caves for a while. i talk a lot of shit about my runs but my WR is actually not that bad. i think with the route i'm using i can save half a minute at most. i'll get it soon.
i got a time i'm somewhat happy with in smrpg any% and took a hiatus from that category. i started running smrpg most of the stuff and it quickly became bar none my favourite thing to speedrun. i almost have my time under 4 and a half hours, currently sitting at 4:31:56. that's wild considering how good i thought my 4:47 was, lol. i'm having so much fun improving my times and finding time saves and helping flesh out the route and all that. i also had fun routing Beat Culex and am going to return to working on that category soon. think it'll always be my favourite game.
dkc2 is hard but i'm enjoying learning it.
i'm very happy with my mario land 2 time. submitting to agdq for the first time and not seeing a wall of red was neat even if it is a lottery. i was only a backup runner but i know that my time being decent allowed for that. i'll grind this game again soon.
i dunno if im gonna return to EB pajama. i really liked the all sanctuaries routing, and it's obsolete now. we'll see.
current plans:
i haven't streamed much this week because i'm having capture card issues =( so instead i've been doing the following:
-uninstalling drivers from device manager and reinstalling over and over
-trying old drivers
-attempting to test in amarec, which crashes, bc the native software also crashes
-testing from usb ubuntu, which wouldn't load and started hanging when i tried to manually run casper
-testing from usb linux mint which worked, but i don't wanna change OSes
-forcefully installing an obsolete windows 7 update to bypass a sha256 error
-bricking my OS with the above step, unable to boot to command line or use system restore from repair disc
-taking the drive out of my laptop and using an old win7 install on a 3rd hard drive to copy my files on the dead drive to an empty partition on the laptop drive
-the copy operation froze up so i made a backup instead
-was able to unbrick my OS after all and deleted the backup
-deleting the empty partition and attempted to fresh install windows 7 on it
-turns out my optical drive isnt reading discs at all which explains why i couldnt run startup repair
-made a boot usb of windows 7
-saved an image of my OS to the empty partition
-reinstalled windows 7 on my drive
-swapped the pcie slots of my cap card and usb card
-tried very old drivers to flash the card which also hung when i let it run overnight
-card somehow flashed itself successfully after i uninstalled the drivers
-upgrading to windows 10 which i left running while i go to work
so yeah... this is an adventure lol. as soon as i can restore my OS i'll get back to streaming, speedrun calendar coding, and drawing your emotes
luckily there's plenty of stuff i can stream that doesn't need a capture card! until i can get game capture working again, i will likely be streaming the following:
-return to the Crystal Caves 1 any% grind! my standing WR has about 30 seconds of mistakes in it. would like to get that 22.
-maybe i'll pick up CC1 any% cheat codes... /maybe/
-got lots of smrpg science to do. i'm planning on documenting every timed hit in the game. i might stream this casually
-speaking of smrpg science, i'm planning on rerouting the Beat Culex category to skip pandorite, i might stream that too since i can do it mostly with web tools
offline i'll practice dkc2 and mario kart.
other speedrun stuff:
rpg limit break 2017 was a huge turning point in my "career". i'm very grateful i had that opportunity and did a good enough job with it. to this day i still have ppl contacting me on twitter to say how much they enjoyed my run. that's cool. i will be submitting smrpg most of the stuff to 2018.
doing a billion marathons was great. i love to entertain, i love to perform, despite being mildly antisocial irl lol. got to meet a lot of amazing people that way and have no regrets.
thank you everyone for the support this year, it makes it a lot more fun. it's still wild to me that ppl actively wanna watch me play video games
i don't know what marathons i'll be going to next year.
smash stuff:
i miss you guys so much you have no idea
good personal stuff:
holy crap guys i got really thin, im not sure if 160lbs is a good goal anymore. if i see my ribcage protrude too much more i'll stop lol
i'm still reeling from friday. if you don't know what happened friday, read this thread: https://twitter.com/pidgezero_one/status/941905358259408897 i love my friends so much and i'm very very lucky to have you guys in my life... i dont even have the words for what i was feeling during and after that
in case it wasn't obvious enough from that thread and also this https://twitter.com/pidgezero_one/status/942742039158018048, grats to everyone who suspected that i'm in love with mishrak! unfortunately i dont have a prize 4 u. but this is definitely why i've been in higher spirits lately, lol
is it too soon to fall for somebody again after my last relationship only ended 3 months ago? idk. you can't really control at what time someone amazing shows up in your life and steals your heart. but that's why the option of taking things slow is there. anyway he's great and i'm really really happy. this is also why idk what marathons i'll be going to in 2018 yet :)
selling all that stuff helped me a ton financially. debt escape will be soon hopefully.
im gonna start resuming language lessons soon. time to stop being lazy.
i put a bag of frozen shrimp and a canister of lawrys salt in my lunchbox today rofl
bad personal stuff:
i'm still hurting over losing my best friend. it's been almost 5 months now. i miss him so much every day. i never got any closure or real understanding, so i'm doing everything i have to do to not let it consume me anymore. this means i've left some of your discords and i'm sorry about that. i just wanted my life back and to not be overwhelmed with anxiety all the time. but i'm trying harder to just focus on the friends i have who never left my side and make me feel cared about and made me keep my head above water when i wanted to sink. thank you and i'm sorry i was absent and unreliable for a long time. i feel like i took the people who care about me for granted and i'm just trying to do better.

DO HACKING WITH SIMPLE PYTHON SCRIPT

Pentesting is all about showing and reporting problems in web/mobile applications. This is the most popular part of cyber security which every researcher/security enthusiast want to do. Because it gives an brief knowledge how to penetrate any web application. Pentesting is done by information gathering. There are many tools/scripts available over the internet which can be used for information gathering. So today we came with another tool written by Joker Security. Tool named as Devploit which is used in information gathering and also another similar all in one tool is Mercury Tool.
Devploit is an very easy to use tool which gives information for your target. You have to just run this script with some of the basic commands of linux. You can gather a lot of information about your target before exploiting. This tool completes the list of various tools like DNS, Whois IP, Geo IP, Subnet Lookup, Port Scanner and many other tools which comes handy in initial phase of penetration testing. Now we will show you features of devploit. For showing you we have install devploit on Kali Linux. There are other Linux distros in which devploit support Ubuntu, Mint and parrot.
For cloning type git clone https://github.com/joker25000/Devploit.git
Then type cd Devploit
Type ls -ltr to check the permissions of the files that are included in devploit directory.
root@kali:/home/iicybersecurity/Downloads/Devploit# ls -ltr total 32 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1838 Dec 30 23:32 README.md -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2154 Dec 30 23:32 install -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8469 Dec 30 23:32 Devploit.py drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Dec 30 23:32 Dev -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1990 Dec 30 23:32 update.py drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Dec 30 23:32 modules
By default devploit installer files does not come with execute permission so for changing permission of the install file type chmod u+x install
For checking if the permission has changed type ls -ltr. If the permission has changed then install file will turn into green color.
root@kali:/home/iicybersecurity/Downloads/Devploit# chmod u+x install root@kali:/home/iicybersecurity/Downloads/Devploit# ls -ltr total 32 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1838 Dec 30 23:32 README.md -rwxr--r-- 1 root root 2154 Dec 30 23:32 install -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8469 Dec 30 23:32 Devploit.py drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Dec 30 23:32 Dev -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1990 Dec 30 23:32 update.py drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Dec 30 23:32 modules
Then type python Devploit.py

Laboratory No.3 – Comparison of Linux VS. Windows
LINUX
• GNU/Linux operating systems have a steeper learning curve for the average user. They frequently require a deeper understanding of the underlying system to perform day-to-day functions. Additionally, troubleshooting technical issues can be a more intimidating and complicated process than on Windows. However, some distributions such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint are designed specifically to ease the transition from Windows to a Linux environment. • Linux is notoriously reliable and secure. It has a strong focus on process management, system security and uptime. • Thousands of programs available for Linux, and many are available as easy-to-install software packages- all for free. Also, many Windows programs can be run on Linux using compatibility layers such as WINE. Linux supports a wider array of free software than Windows. • Many available software programs, utilities, and games available on Linux are free and open source. Even complex applications such as GIMP, Open Office, and Star Office are available. • Fifteen years ago, Linux struggled to support new hardware. Manufacturers often considered Linux support a secondary concern (if they considered supporting it at all). Furthermore, device drivers for Linux were created only by enthusiasts who devoted their own time and resources to making Linux compatible with new hardware. Since then, the Linux base has grown exponentially. Today, the majority of hardware manufacturers give Linux support the same priority as Microsoft Windows. • Linux is a highly secure operating system. Although attack vectors are still discovered, its source code is open and available for any user to review, which makes it easier to identify and repair vulnerabilities.
WINDOWS
• Windows is one of the easier desktop operating systems to use. One of its primary design characteristics is user friendliness and simplicity of basic system tasks. Its ease lack of difficulty is considered a positive by users who want their system to just work. However, more proficient users may be frustrated by oversimplification of system tasks at the expense of fine-grained control over the system itself. • Although Microsoft Windows has made great improvements in reliability in recent years, it’s considered less reliable than Linux. Many of the sacrifices it makes in the name of user-friendliness can lead to security vulnerabilities and system instability. • Windows commands the highest number of desktop users, and therefore the largest selection of commercial software. It also has the largest selection of video games by a wide margin. • Although there are many Windows programs, utilities, and games, the majority of the programs are commercial. • Windows has massive user base, so it would be madness for a consumer hardware manufacturer not to support Windows. As a Windows user, you can rest assured that your operating system is compatible with any hardware you might buy. • Microsoft has made great security improvements over the years. But as the operating system with the largest user base, especially among novice computer users, it is the primary target for malicious coders. As a result, of all major operating systems, Microsoft Windows is the most likely to be the victim of viruses and malware.

Choosing a Laptop

How to pick a laptop ? With so many options out there, trying to find the right laptop that meets your needs can get confusing fast. However, by doing a little planning and consideration of your needs, you can quickly eliminate the vast majority of laptops from your search and focus on finding the one that suits your habits and budget perfectly.
1. Determining the needs
First thing is think the main purpose of your laptop. It will determine the type of laptop you are looking for. There are some common main use of a laptop :
•Doing school/office work
- Mostly use the computer for word processing, search, spreadsheets, and other professional and academic tasks.
•Playing games
- Playing the latest and greatest games and still perform for other tasks as well.
•Internet browsing
- Primarily using the computer to access websites, email, streaming video, and social media.
•Media production
- Use the computer as a workstation to record music, edit video, or manipulate images. And do not forget the advantages and disadvantages of having a laptop. These are some pros and cons of a laptop.
Pros:
• Laptop is portable. Laptops are only getting lighter and thinner and can take easily with you.
• Laptops can perform more and more tasks that desktops can. There are very few programs these days that a desktop can run that a laptop cannot.
• Laptops can save a lot of space. It just needs a little desk space.
Cons:
• A laptop is limited by the battery. Eventually, it will need to be plugged in to the AC power.
• The portability makes them easily lost or stolen by criminals.
• Laptops cannot be upgraded like a desktop can. This means that they become obsolete quicker than a desktop computer and eventually, your laptop lagging behind.
• Laptops get heated very quickly if you are using it heavily.
• Laptops are factory-built and you cannot build it yourself. However, you still can upgrade the memory and storage by yourself. Also set a budget for your new laptop. It will be helpful for you if you have a budget before start looking for a laptop. By doing so, you will be more focus when looking for a laptop.
2. Choosing the O/S
Determine the operating system that you want to choose. Operating system is the interface and structure of your laptop and usually have installed already in your laptop. There are 4 main O/S and you’re better to understand your options.
• Windows
Windows is the most common and widely-used O/S. It can be installed and will work on virtually any computer, from the cheapest laptops in the store to the most expensive. It can also be installed onto Mac laptop. Windows is compatible with the most software. And it is also compatible and work well with Microsoft Office, which is de facto standard in word processing and spreadsheets. It is also compatible with most of games. Windows has the largest game library of any operating system. However, Windows is much more susceptible to viruses than other operating systems. This isn't to say that it's not secure; it just means that you will need to practice good habits while online.
• Mac OS X
Mac OS X is designed for use with Mac hardware. OS X is only available on MacBooks. It cannot be installed onto non-Mac laptop. This is the main competitor of Windows. By using this O/S, Mac computer can integrate seamlessly with iOS devices, so you can manage your apps and media natively and easily. Mac computers are also recommended to do media editing. The video and image editing software on a Mac is unrivaled, and most musicians also use Macs for recording and production. These days, there is much same software on a Mac OS that you will find on Windows. However, although there are more and more software options on Mac, there is still a lack of compatibility for a lot of key programs. The biggest drawback is OS X's lack of game selection compared to Windows. Mac OS X is less prone to viruses. This operating system is more secure than Windows, due both to architectural and population differences between the two operating systems. There are still threats if you use a Mac, just not as many.
• Linux
Linux is a free operating system that comes in a variety of flavors, or "distributions". These include Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, and more. You can install Linux onto Mac or Windows laptop. Linux and many of the programs compatible with it are open-source and free. They are free to try out before installing. It is one of the most secure operating systems since everything requires express consent of the user. There are very few viruses that target Linux machines. The biggest drawback to Linux is the lack of compatibility between it and other operating systems. The gaming library on Linux is also quite limited compared to Windows, though more and more games are releasing Linux versions. Linux is difficult to learn. That being said, Linux does require a bit more time invested getting used to navigating and manipulating files. Graphical front-end have been develop by most distributions and it is easier to transition from Windows or Mac now. Linux is a default O/S. It is not installed on most laptops available in stores. It will need to be installed later alongside or replacing your default operating system.
• ChromeOS
ChromeOS is used for Google's Chromium-based operating system. ChromeOS is only available on specific Chromebooks, though you can get Chromium for any system. It is designed for laptops that are consistently connected to the internet, and can only run special web apps. Since ChromeOS is essentially just a web browser, it is lightweight and fast. All the apps are installed inside the web browser, so the most functions of it need internet connection. Because Chromebooks rely on Google Drive for file storage, most have very limited onboard storage You can only use apps that have been designed for ChromeOS on the Chromebook. This means that your software options will be very limited. Google Drive provides a decent Office alternative, but you can forget installing games or programs like Photoshop. ChromeOS is best for heavy Google users. If the majority of your computer work takes place inside the Google ecosystem, then a Chromebook may be your most affordable and attractive option. Most Chromebooks are very inexpensive, ranging from $200-$250 USD. The exception to this is Google's Chromebox, which starts at $825 USD.
3. Deciding on a Model
There are four main types of laptops: Netbook, Traditional, 2-in-1 Laptop, and Desktop Replacement. However, it does not match if you are choosing a Mac laptop.
• Netbook
Netbook is the smallest laptop and it is very suitable for heavy travelers. It is easy and perfect to be packed in your carry-on or purse because it is small and lightweight, usually a couple pounds. Netbook has the small screen and keyboard, so typing on a netbook will take some getting used to, especially if you are accustomed to using a standard laptop. Netbook doesn't have very powerful components, so it only can run basic program such as MS Office. It is not suitable for playing games. However, it has much longer battery compare to other laptops.
• Traditional
This is the standard size laptop, the most common and the most varied. This type is suitable for a wide range of situations, and available in a wide range of configurations. Traditional laptops have a variety of screen sizes; the most common is 14”-15”. They have larger keyboards and trackpads which make them more comfort for used. This type is larger and harder than netbook, so it cannot be carried in small bags. However, traditional laptop has limited battery since it has a more powerful machine than netbook.
• 2-in-1
2-in-1 laptops are the newest style of laptops. They share characteristics of both tablets and laptops and have a unique on the screen. Their screen can be rotated, folded, or slide behind the keyboards. Even, some of them can be detached from their keyboards. Since they can be used as tablet, all of them have touch screens. 2-in-1 laptops are usually smaller than traditional laptop and because of that, they are commonly less powerful than the traditional one.
• Desktop Replacement
Desktop Replacement Laptops are the largest and heaviest laptops, and also the most powerful and the most expensive. Well, this type is really not suitable for travel. They are able to run most of the programs at the same levels of efficiency as a desktop computer. This type has a large screen and keyboard, so users can more easily use. But, due to the increased power, desktop replacements have the worst battery life. So, this laptop usually always plugged in to the AC power. Well, definitely this type is really not suitable for travel.
• Rugged Laptop
This laptop is designed for those whose their jobs or lifestyle, puts your laptop at risk of getting damaged. If you think about durability, you may want to look at this option. This includes steel construction and laptops specifically designed to withstand punishment. Because of its durability, rugged laptops are usually bulkier, heavier, and much more expensive than regular laptops, and thus are seldom seen in regular consumer use. They are usually sold to organizations such as, military, police, medical emergency and fire fighters, rather than individuals, and are rarely marketed via retail channels. At last, do not forget to keep in style. Since you may use your laptops in public area and people will see it, then, even if not the primary, do not forget your style appearance.
4. Checking Specifications
Make sure to check carefully at the specifications of every laptop you consider to purchase. Every laptop is different; two models mean two different hardwares inside and different ability they have, although they come with the same price. These are some points for you to check :
• CPU
Check the CPU speed. CPU is the part that run bulk of the process in laptop. CPU speed will determine the speed of you work. Day by day, the softwares provided are more complicated and need more CPU speed to process, so avoid the older processors like Celeron, Atom, Pentium, C-, or E-Series processors.
• RAM
RAM (Random Access Memory) is the part where the computer stores the data for multiple programs at once. See how much RAM comes installed, and how much RAM the laptop can support. The more RAM you have, the better your computer will be able to multitask. Today, 4 to 8 GB of RAM is standard for regular laptop; however netbook will likely have less, while desktop replacements might have significantly more.
• Graphics
Most of laptops come with integrated graphics cards, which are good for simple games, however usually not able to handle the new big releases. A dedicated card will provide more power for a higher cost and less battery life. But, most of laptops did not allow to change the graphic cards.
• Storage
Check the storage space. Listed storage space doesn't count the space that taken by the operating system and bundled programs. So, 250 GB of storage may only have 210 GB of storage free due to the 40 GB used by operating system and bundled programs. Most laptops allow you to upgrade the hard drive later, though you will need to reinstall the operating system when you do so. Today, there is SSD which is becoming standard and is preferable due to increased access speed and extended battery life. They are more expensive than standard hard drives for less storage. However, SSDs are often smaller than standard drives, meaning you may need an external drive to store all of your media files.
• Ports
Make sure that the laptop you choose has enough USB ports for all your external devices. The more devices you have, the more important the ports are. And if you want to connect your laptop to TV or projector, make sure that it has HDMI or VGA port.
• Optical Drives
Today, many laptops come without optical drive to save space. This helps the battery life and cut down on the size, but later you will need an external optical drive to burn discs. Some laptops now come with Blu-ray drives, which can read and write standard DVDs as well as read Blu-ray discs, which can contain much more information or HD movies.
• Screen Resolution
1600 x 900 or 1920 x 1080 is preferable for the clearest picture, though smaller laptops may not be able to attain this. A higher resolution will result in a clearer picture, especially if you plan to watch movies or play games. A higher resolution also means that the screen can display more, which means your viewable area will be larger. Also check how the laptop looks in direct sunlight. Cheap screens are often very difficult to see in direct sunlight.
5. Buying the Laptop
• Research Do your research and make sure to read reviews online for the laptops that you are considering. Don't let a sales rep talk you into something you don't need.
• Testing Do some test before you buy. Try to find a way to test your desired laptop before you buy. If you want to purchase via online, find whether a local retailer has a demo model to try before you buy. Ask your friends if they have the same laptop you are considering.
• Warranty Check the warranty. Computer parts fail, and do so fairly often. Having a solid warranty is very important for laptops, especially the more expensive ones. Make sure the warranty is a manufacturer warranty, and that they do a good job with their warranty work.
• Used or Refurbished Understand the risk of buying used or refurbished. Buying used can save you a lot of money, but you may end up with a very subpar product. AS laptops get older, they start to experience significant performance decreases. Used laptops often no longer quality for manufacturer warranties, and may people sell their laptops because they're fed up with how they're performing. If you are buying a refurbished model, ensure that the refurbishment comes with a very strong warranty.
