Questioning the stability or fragility of the HMS Lukola

So it seems that one of the Captains of the HMS Lukola has gone on a blocking spree today.

Im confused, concerned and frustrated.

Yes, I was one who has been unceremoniously blocked. I have not done or said anything unkind to or about this person or their blog.

In fact, I very much love their blog, but it seems that because I liked another Captains blog, that was reason enough to block me.

In no way is this meant to offend anyone, but I am just curious why the blocking spree occurred? 

Today's incident has also made me think a little deeper about the fragility of this little corner of the world.

Until today I loved this little corner of the world where I can connect with like minded people and be a part of a community that has an unwavering belief in Lukola despite the mainstream PR narrative and the constant battering from jakolas and other ships trying to tear it down.

However, if the community is so fragile that those of us on the HMS Lukola cannot like different bloggers viewpoints and engage in curious, thoughtful, objective and respectful conversations that get us thinking outside the box about what may or may not be occurring BTS and in public then how are we going to survive?

A huge part of this community and why I joined it and enjoyed it so much is because of the communitys curiosity and depth of belief in Lukola.

The ability of many, Captains and ship-mates alike to unpack what we see publicly, questioning and respectfully challenging the PR narratives, collating crumbs, analysing sm posts, etc and calling out the trolls and blatant bullying behaviour with kindness and respect has kept the ship afloat through many rough waters.

BUT...

if those steering the ship are so reactive and fragile, then trolls and bullies like jakeholes and the red devil become insignificant and do not need to continue throwing stone's when we are tearing down our community from within.

The reactiveness of blocking followers for the simple act of liking other blogs creates a sense of bitterness within the community. As well as a deep troubling sense of sadness that some people in this community feel they have to block followers simply for liking other blogs.

It speaks of a fragility within the Lukola community that I thought had been worked through. 🧐

The ship has weathered many storms, taken hit after hit from other ships and trolls, that I thought had only strengthened the resolve and determination of those that lead the ship.

Captains who have used their blogs to both encourage sooth and reassure the battered and the bruised shipmates.

But when a Captain uses their weapons against the shipmates without warning, without conversation, it makes me question how stable this ship really is and why they feel the ship has to separate into fractions in the first place. Simply because someone's curiosity or broader thinking doesn't align on the same day, in the same moment as anothers is not a justifiable reason to block a bunch of followers.

I thought this ship was built of stronger stuff and that the HMS Lukola encouraged objective, critical thinking and open-mimded conversation as long as it was respectful.

Maybe I was wrong because the reactiveness I've seen today makes me question how truly stable, fair and objective this ship actually is.

And I worry that if we continue being so reactive, tearing each other down from within then eventually (or sooner rather than later) there will be no ship left. Just little lifeboats and dingys afloat in the tumultuous seas of the Lukola fandom, left to fend off the vultures, snakes and sharks and navigate the stormy waters alone.

That thought makes me feel really sad..especially given how much the ship has weathered to date. 😭

I get that we all have bad days, believe me, my life recently been a shit storm filled with unfortunate events piling on top of each other and weighing me down so heavily that some days I can barely breathe let alone be a functional human being. But that doesn't give me the right or justification to be mean, unkind or cruel to the rest of the world, whether that in person or within the shit fest of the internet.

The bigger message

While it may seem that one or two people are trying to protect their space for whatever reason, and they have every right to do so. The bigger picture sends a stronger message to the Lukola community as a whole, that even the act of liking or engaging with different theories about Lukola is completely unacceptable to some of the captains and if you are perceived to not align 100% with that person's views you are going to be pushed off the plank into the shark infested waters without even an opportunity for parley.

Im an individual who likes to question, to analyse, to look at different viewpoints and theories and make up my own mind. I think critical thinking has been essential to stay firmly seated on the HMS Lukola.

I'm 1000% super glued to the viewing deck. But that should not mean I cannot engage with the viewpoints of other Lukola's for the risk of being thrown overboard.

Thats not a community I want to be a part of.

This fandom and Lukola community has been one of the few things that has kept me going through the shitstorm of my life and now it feels like even this is falling apart and that thought breaks my heart.

Im still here, but I am shaken by the fragility and reactiveness I've seen today on board the ship.

i wish having to remind someone something three or five or fifteen times or however many it takes until they remember it on their own was more destigmatized within the framework of disability accomodations

like i understand the emotional significance given to the act of remembering, i have myself have had the kneejerk reaction that maybe i'm not as important to someone as they say i am if they forget something i asked of them or told them. i get it. but that's like. a societal expectation that isnt necessarily true, you know.much like eye contact to mean you are listening or a smile to mean you are friendly. like, yeah, of course an asshole who isn't listening to you might not make eye contact, but that doesn't mean that every single time someone isn't making eye contact it means they are an asshole.

to me disposition is much more important than memory, especially in the realm of boundaries and cohabitation, like: let's say you don't like it when your partner puts their shoes on the bed. extremely reasonable thing to ask them not to do, and something that, if not done, would very quickly become a point of contention because them continuing to do the thing you asked them not to is interpreted as a dismissal of your feelings and a violation of a reasonable boundary. and i know a lot of people themselves already struggle putting up boundaries and enforcing them and are extremely reactive to anything that can be interpreted as a boundary being crossed, and this can be super hard to deal with. but like. disabilities ARE hard to deal with, you know, they are frustrating and they might slow you down or inconvenience you, and that's just part of the deal! is it really an accomodation if the line is drawn at whatever arbitrary point someone decides they're done accommodating? do you walk alongside a person on crutches for three blocks and then are like, ok, i've accommodated you enough, time to go at my pace now?

and yes, yes, i know "i forgot" or "i didn't know" can be used to truly harm someone else in a number of infinitely nuanced scenarios. context clues, people. to me that's where disposition comes in and separates "literally struggles to remember" from "disrespecting and pushing boundary", and i think that separation, albeit fuzzy for people who strongly correlate memory and respect, can be learned?

if my partner was like, "hey, don't put your shoes on the bed!" then a respectful disposition towards their boundaries would immediately make me go, "oh no! sorry i forgot! here, i will stop doing it immediatly, and if necessary amend the damage of me forgetting (in this analogy, washing the sheets)". and if this has to happen thirteen times before i remember on my own, i would feel truly bad about it because i'm letting my loved one down even though it's something i legitimately can't control. i don't know! it's the "if you cared, you would remember" unstoppable force vs "if you cared, you'd cut me some slack for not remembering" immovable object, it's hard. like thats what i mean by context clues, what is more likely: that a person who in every other way has shown up for you has suddenly become toxic/selfish/abusive specifically about shoes on the bed, or that they struggle to remember?

i don't know man. the way i see it, ultimately it's a lot more feasible to adjust your expectations of what someone loving you and caring about you will look like and how it shows up in their behavior, than it is to literally force yourself to remember something. and my memory issues are not even that bad! after the fifth or sixth reminder something will generally stick around (unless it's a situation that does not happen often, in which case the large stretches of time in between might hinder my progress), and like someone might just decide the rest of the Me is not worth the trouble, and that's their prerogative, but i do think it says more about them than it does about me.

everyone's always up for disability rights until it becomes inconvenient or clashes with their idea of what "good behavior" should look like. like i can't help but think that if this is something that *i* struggle with socially, i can't imagine what people who have a legitimately debilitating memory disability, who may need to be reminded forever, feel like every day of their damn lives

some people genuinely just enjoy being antagonistic and being kind of shitty. i very likely have a deeper insight into this than a lot of people because one of our parts/alters is like that lmao. he just thinks it's fun to mess with people and make people get reactive, and will continue to engage until he's bored and then he just... moves on with his day.

there is no way to "win" in this situation other than to just exit the conversation (aka block them if you're online). you're not going to "own" them or change their minds; if you engage w them in any way you're just feeding into that behaviour.

I'm not passing judgement on this either lol - I'm not saying people like that are bad (god knows we'd be lost without [redacted] ngl, he gets shit done and he gives us a necessary break from the constant feelings of terror and shame), and I'm not saying you Shouldn't engage with them. you make your own decisions here. I'm just letting you know the mindset of people who act this way

would like to add that while euthanising is always sad, “no-kill” shelters and rescues actively hold onto unadoptable dogs for years, taking up valuable resources and living a very poor quality of life.

think of it like this:

a “no kill” shelter/rescue: gets in a 2 year old dog. this dog has a known bite history, having bitten their last owner because of severe resource guarding issues. this dog is extremely fearful. they cannot go to a home with any other animals, no kids, and no elderly people, and also have reactivity issues and can only really live on a farm or large lifestyle block that has 2m/6ft solid fencing as this dog is also prone to escaping. the dog ends up also showing fearful aggression to men.

this dog can only live in one very specific scenario: an all-women household with no other animals or kids, experience in severe behavioural issues in dogs or the money to pay a behaviourist for training, living on a farm that is fully fenced.

this is an incredibly specific home and not many of those homes exist. this dog is considered unadoptable - it can’t just go to the average household.

the dog ends up sitting in that kennel for years until they die of old age at, say, 14. 12 years in a kennel, taken out for what is barely a walk for years, never played with, seeing humans once or twice a day for food. this dog takes up 12 years of space, food, water, time and energy of rescue/shelter resources.

a “kill” shelter/rescue: takes in this same dog, however, after a month or two, they realise this dog is unadoptable - the chance of them finding the exact home is very, very low. because they have to take in every dog, they euthanise this dog as it has a very poor quality of life and it likely has genetic aggression or anxiety that even after behavioural training, will always remain - the dog will never be happy and healthy.

then, that kennel is used many, many times as they are able to house adoptable dogs that maybe sit in that kennel for a few months at most. this means more dogs are helped long-term - in 12 years that could potentially be hundreds of dogs helped, resources are properly used to help dogs that are able to go into homes and (hopefully) live happy lives.

euthanising unadoptable dogs is best in the long-term - it helps rescues and shelters receive necessary funding, as well as helping the dogs they take in, and it helps the unadoptable dogs by letting them go to a better place than sitting in a kennel for years, being completely miserable.

TLDR: no-kill shelters are the best solution, though euthanising unadoptable animals is sad, they are doing a necessary evil and in the long run are helping more dogs. don’t support “no-kill” shelters. adopt or shop responsibly.

“Kill shelter” is a colloquial term used primarily for Town/City (aka municipal) shelters that rely on incredibly limited government grant funding to operate.

These shelters, by the very nature of their existence, DO NOT HAVE the funds to operate like private rescues do.

On top of this, they’re also *legally required* to take in ANY animal that comes to them. Even if they’re full. Or they’ll lose all of their funding.

This is what leads them to needing to euthanize for space. Is euthanizing for space sad? Yes. But due to the current crisis, it’s also NECESSARY.

These shelters are constantly overfull. They’re STRUGGLING. They don’t have the funds to operate properly. And yet these municipal, government funded, struggling shelters are the same ones that are most likely to be providing care for owned animals in the community

Municipal (“kill”) shelters are the ones hosting low cost spay and neuter clinics. They’re the ones discounting vaccination appointments and microchipping. They’re the ones that have pet food banks so struggling pet owners can feed their pets that week.

These shelters are not evil. They’re doing the absolute best they can with the bare minimum funding they get.

These people are incredibly resourceful and care very deeply about the animals in their care. It breaks their heart every time they have to euthanize an animal that couldn’t get adopted.

These underfunded shelters need your money significantly more than that fancy private rescue you see on TikTok or instagram that has a beautiful facility and has never had to euthanize an animal ever.

Support your local shelters and they will give back to the community thousand fold.

A high-fat diet sets off metabolic dysfunction in cells, leading to weight gain

Consuming a high-fat diet can lead to a variety of health problems — not only weight gain but also an increased risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases.

At the cellular level, hundreds of changes take place in response to a high-fat diet. MIT researchers have now mapped out some of those changes, with a focus on metabolic enzyme dysregulation that is associated with weight gain.

Their study, conducted in mice, revealed that hundreds of enzymes involved in sugar, lipid, and protein metabolism are affected by a high-fat diet, and that these disruptions lead to an increase in insulin resistance and an accumulation of damaging molecules called reactive oxygen species. These effects were more pronounced in males than females.

The researchers also showed that most of the damage could be reversed by giving the mice an antioxidant along with their high-fat diet.

“Under metabolic stress conditions, enzymes can be affected to produce a more harmful state than what was initially there,” says Tigist Tamir, a former MIT postdoc. “Then what we’ve shown with the antioxidant study is that you can bring them to a different state that is less dysfunctional.”

Tamir, who is now an assistant professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, is the lead author of the new study, which appears today in Molecular Cell. Forest White, the Ned C. and Janet C. Rice Professor of Biological Engineering and a member of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT, is the senior author of the paper.

Metabolic networks

In previous work, White’s lab has found that a high-fat diet stimulates cells to turn on many of the same signaling pathways that are linked to chronic stress. In the new study, the researchers wanted to explore the role of enzyme phosphorylation in those responses.

Phosphorylation, or the addition of a phosphate group, can turn enzyme activity on or off. This process, which is controlled by enzymes called kinases, gives cells a way to quickly respond to environmental conditions by fine-tuning the activity of existing enzymes within the cell.

Many enzymes involved in metabolism — the conversion of food into the building blocks of key molecules such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids — are known to undergo phosphorylation.

The researchers began by analyzing databases of human enzymes that can be phosphorylated, focusing on enzymes involved in metabolism. They found that many of the metabolic enzymes that undergo phosphorylation belong to a class called oxidoreductases, which transfer electrons from one molecule to another. Such enzymes are key to metabolic reactions such as glycolysis — the breakdown of glucose into a smaller molecule known as pyruvate.

Among the hundreds of enzymes the researchers identified are IDH1, which is involved in breaking down sugar to generate energy, and AKR1C1, which is required for metabolizing fatty acids. The researchers also found that many phosphorylated enzymes are important for the management of reactive oxygen species, which are necessary for many cell functions but can be harmful if too many of them accumulate in a cell.

Phosphorylation of these enzymes can lead them to become either more or less active, as they work together to respond to the intake of food. Most of the metabolic enzymes identified in this study are phosphorylated on sites found in regions of the enzyme that are important for binding to the molecules that they act upon or for forming dimers — pairs of proteins that join together to form a functional enzyme.

“Tigist’s work has really shown categorically the importance of phosphorylation in controlling the flux through metabolic networks. It’s fundamental knowledge that emerges from this systemic study that she’s done, and it’s something that is not classically captured in the biochemistry textbooks,” White says.

Out of balance

To explore these effects in an animal model, the researchers compared two groups of mice, one that received a high-fat diet and one that consumed a normal diet. They found that overall, phosphorylation of metabolic enzymes led to a dysfunctional state in which cells were in redox imbalance, meaning that their cells were producing more reactive oxygen species than they could neutralize. These mice also became overweight and developed insulin resistance.

“In the context of continued high fat diet, what we see is a gradual drift away from redox homeostasis towards a more disease-like setting,” White says.

These effects were much more pronounced in male mice than female mice. Female mice were better able to compensate for the high fat diet by activating pathways involved in processing fat and metabolizing it for other uses, the researchers found.

“One of the things we learned is that the overall systemic effect of these phosphorylation events led to, especially in males, an increased imbalance in redox homeostasis. They were expressing a lot more stress and a lot more of the metabolic dysfunction phenotype compared to females,” Tamir says.

The researchers also found that if they gave mice who were on a high-fat diet an antioxidant called BHA, many of these effects were reversed. These mice showed a significant decrease in weight gain and did not become prediabetic, unlike the other mice fed a high-fat diet.

It appears that the antioxidant treatment leads cells back into a more balanced state, with fewer reactive oxygen species, the researchers say. Additionally, metabolic enzymes showed a systemic rewiring and changed state of phosphorylation in those mice.

“They’re experiencing a lot of metabolic dysfunction, but if you co-administer something that counters that, then they have enough reserve to maintain some sort of normalcy,” Tamir says. “The study suggests that there is something biochemically happening in cells to bring them to a different state — not a normal state, just a different state in which now, at the tissue and organism levels, the mice are healthier.”

In her new lab at the University of North Carolina, Tamir now plans to further explore whether antioxidant treatment could be an effective way to prevent or treat obesity-associated metabolic dysfunction, and what the optimal timing of such a treatment would be.
