I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978)

💁‍♀️Strong Female Lead

This is a tough watch to be certain so don’t go into it lightly. The acting is very well done especially for such heavy subject matter. Camille Keaton is amazing. This revenge is extremely sweet.

Our film begins with Jennifer, a writer from New York, coming down to her new place of living, a little house by the water. On her way she stops at a gas station for gas and we see the station attendant and two other men. Once at home Jennifer orders groceries from the local store and has them delivered to her home, she tells the delivery man that she just moved and she lives by herself. Well, the delivery man gets to talking with the guys down at the gas station about her and everything seems fine at first. Just “boys being boys” or however the saying goes. But then the trouble starts. While trying to enjoy her backyard quietly two of the men come by on their motor boat and force her to go back inside. But the horrors don’t truly begin until Jennifer is out on her canoe sunbathing in a bikini when suddenly the two men in the motor boat come by and snatch up the line attached to her canoe and start dragging her along with them. If that wasn’t scary enough, once they reach shore they reel her in and start chasing her, while whooping and hollering. It was awful. She runs until she meets back up with the gas station attendant who is in the middle of the woods and he grabs her.

Here is where things get really graphic and frankly a little hard to watch so I will try to write this with care. The attendant strips off her top and shoves her down while the other men catch up. They then hold her down while removing her bottoms and call out for the delivery man to come out as this is all for him. Truthfully he is only a delivery boy but they wanted to help him become a delivery man. But the delivery man is scared, he refuses to do it, so instead he just holds her down while the gas station attendant has his way with her. It is an awful rape and by the end Jennifer is so broken she can barely limp away. She walks ages through the woods, naked, terrified, defeated, but the horror won’t stop. She runs back into the men, they were waiting for her deeper down the forest (they have the boats or a car so can get anywhere faster than her it seems). They beat her up some more before pinning her down to a rock this time and she is brutally raped once again. They leave her, bloodied and bruised, and she limps home. By the time she gets there she is crawling, covered in caked blood and dirt. Jennifer reaches for the phone and it gets kicked out of her hands, the men were in the house. This time the delivery man gets it up and rapes her but he can’t finish so he doesn’t think it counts somehow. The last man who didn’t rape her sexually assaults her by sticking his penis in her face and then he beats her up a ton.

Finally, as the men are leaving, they decide they have to kill her so she won’t turn them in. They send the delivery man back in to do it but he has proven throughout the movie thus far to not be very reliable. Either way, they give him a knife and tell him to “do her.” Surprising no one, the delivery man doesn’t have the guts to kill her so he just takes some of her blood and puts it on the knife and tells them he did. They finally leave. When Jennifer wakes up she takes a well deserved shower and it appears that she doesn’t go to the police. She probably went to a hospital to get her face fixed up, but otherwise it seems she is going to either let this slide or handle it on her own… After some time has passed, the men are sweating the murder and blaming each other for the whole affair. It would almost be comical if it wasn’t so horrific and tragic. Jennifer has been healing and plotting her revenge. She even goes to a church to apologize to God for what she is about to do (so you know it is going to be good). Jennifer begins to stalk her attackers, she finds the gas attendant is a father and husband, what a scumbag. She already knows that the one works at the grocery store so she calls them for groceries which she knows he will have to deliver.

The delivery man gets really nervous about going to Jennifer’s house, though, and brings a knife from the deli. He is nervous? Him and his buddies beat the ever-loving shit out of this woman, but I digress. When he gets there, Jennifer is looking ethereal in a white gown, she lures him into the woods. There she waits for him by a tree and beckons him forward, telling him that they could have had a real relationship. The delivery man is holding up a knife, like he is going to kill her but her soft words and body trick him. She lets him have sex with her so she can put a noose around his neck and then she pulls it tight. He dies and she just moves on to her next mark. The gas attendant, he is easy, she just pulls up in her car and beckons him to jump in. He thinks his dick was such hot shit that she wants more. When they get to the remote location of her choice, Jennifer pulls a gun on the gas attendant but he says all this nonsense about how she was asking for it (being raped (which she wasn’t)). Jennifer acts like she is in a daze by what he says and drops the gun, somehow this makes them go back to her bathroom and into her bathtub. Jennifer is giving him a tug under the water and then she pulls out a knife and cuts him somewhere low. There was so much blood and the water and she locked the door and he just died in there while she listened to opera. It was a really intense scene that even now makes me feel a little weak in the knees.

Finally we are down to our last two boys. They know that Jennifer is behind the disappearance of their friends and they are going to kill her. One of them pulls up in the boat while the other waits on land with an axe. Surprise! Jennifer swam right up to the boat under the water and climbed on board. Then she simply pushed the man off the boat and motored away, leaving him stranded as she ran circles around him. He was terrified as she would nearly hit him with the boat, he also got tired very quickly. His friend on shore just had to watch this happen, then he tried to come at her with the axe but she just got it on her boat! The other man swam out to save his friend (oh, bad idea) and he received an axe to the back. After a lot of back and forth, she finally stops the motor and the guy climbs on the motor and begs her not to kill him. She says, “suck it, bitch!” and starts the motor, chopping him up! Her revenge is complete! She boats away satisfied!
