every locked tomb cav plays rugby in any modern au btw. issac also plays and him and jeannemary probably tried to petition their school to stop gender segregating the teams bc they wanted to play together. didn’t work (schools really like gender binaries over here) so they ended up joining a local club instead which is honestly just the better option to begin with. magnus only ever played for his local club but likes to tell the kids he swears he could have made the regional team at least (…love you king but probably not). gideon wants to join the black ferns, which is how i justify forcing her to wear all black. camilla absolutely got offered for the regional team (at least) but said no because that seemed like too much fuss. babs has what i’ve dubbed the rugby nose because he’s really good at getting his nose broken and the only reason his entire face isn’t on a lean is because he’s so annoyingly fond of staring at himself in the mirror that he has a bunch of little rituals to keep himself (mostly) symmetrical. colum was sort of a prodigy given that he’s got the resilience of a mule but never got to do anything with that because his weird family started hissing and screaming at the concept of him having personal dreams and aspirations. protesilaus is a mourned hero who was on track to join the all blacks (he was his regional captain) but dropped the sport entirely to spend more time on his family, his garden, and looking after dulcie after she had a nasty little illness flare up. marta. well i have a lesser grasp on her as a person but i think she’s either playing for her local club or regionally i do not believe her willing to make the national team. i think she’d say no. probably locally only, given that i fully believe she has a full time job doing something far too professional for me to comprehend.

i think my worst personal headcanon for the 4th house is that there are just no real adults there. the 5th "takes special pains with the 4th house" -- hegemonic pains. what if those pains are broader than just Abigail & Magnus feeling parental for Issac and Jeannemary and instead take the shape of the 5th parenting a house of eternal childhood? Issac was a womb vat kid, conceived 6 years posthumously on his father's side (acording to the cohort files). 6 years! you only have to be pubescent to bank your genetic material, maybe not even that with necromantic augmentation. and womb vat means you bypass all the risks of a child or young teenager giving birth.
the 4th house necromantic specialty is radical thanergetic fission -- it's a suicide bomb. and, we know from Harrow's conception that younger people produce more thanergy upon death vs adults. fidelity. vanguard of the empire. big families, but only because you need spares. fuel for the machine & blood for the gears. why would you let them grow up when their purpose is to die young?

IT WORKED IT WORKED IT WORKED
my brother is reading TLT! He’s about 3/4ths of the way through Gideon the Ninth!
His observations so far:
he has enjoyed and repeated the line “you want to fight it. Because the arms look… a little like swords.”
“I don’t think it’s fair to call the Fourth kids ‘horrible teens’ when the protagonists are only 17 and 19”
“SOMETHING is going on with the Seventh, I don’t trust them—that whole ‘you usually fight with a two handed weapon, don’t you?’ She’s hiding something” [he is Too Straight to be fooled by Dulcinea’s sapphic charms, unlike me, who was Dumb and Gay and very surprised that the sweet sick girl was secretly evil]
[last thing he read: Gideon finds Pro’s head] “So I’m thinking the bodies they found in the incinerator, one of them has to be the Seventh cav, hell maybe both bodies are the Seventh—they’re both dead, or maybe they’re both puppets? All I know is neither of them is what they say they are” [smart man!]
“I’m not really sure what a lyctor even… is? Yet? Seems like it’s an exceptionally powerful necromancer, who probably serves the Emperor in a much closer capacity than the rest of the military, it’s important for sure” [well he’s not wrong]
“I’m very upset at the name pronunciation guide because I looked up how to say Issac Tettares and then Tamsyn adds a note about how his death (!) foreshadows Gideon’s death (!??!???!!) and well now I guess I’m just gonna read the rest of this book mispronouncing Proteselaus because WHO PUTS SPOILERS IN A PRONUNCIATION GUIDE?” [a fair criticism, I should have warned him]
overall I am excited to have someone else to talk to about the series (my partner tolerates my yammering about it, but it’s not exactly her cup of tea, book-wise) (it’s definitely my brother’s cup of tea though) and it’ll be interesting to get the perspective of someone who’s outside the target audience in some ways (a heterosexual man) and inside the target audience in other ways (an ex-catholic homestuck fan)
yaaaaay book tea partiesssssss

thinking abt gideon's corruption arc because for the longest time i didn’t believe that cytherea had killed issac&jeannemarie, because i didn't understand why. killing dulcie&pro makes sense. killing abigail&magnus makes sense. but jeannemary? issac? it doesn’t make sense. they were kids, they didn’t even try the lyctor trials, and they absolutley would not have gone through with the process even if they had.
and THEN. in my most recent reread of GtN i realized that it was actually incredibly important for issac to die in front of jeannemarie and for gideon to fail in saving either of them, because this is the moment that gideon decided to die for harrow. right after issac gets skewered by like 500 bones, gideon has a personal epiphany that "nobody should have to see their necromancer die".
i think that in a very big way the deaths of issac and jeannemarie were the tipping point for gideon’s corruption arc. the point of no return. other ppl have written about this more eloquently but the entire book, cytherea is shaping gideon into a Cavalier. because gideon isn’t initially. she’s pretending, and is not particularly skilled at it. during their time at canaan house cytherea basically instructs gideon in manners and servitude but what she really needs to teach gideon is sacrifice. what she needs to show gideon is what it does to a cavalier to see their necromancer die in front of them. what she needs gideon to see is a moment where a cavalier could have died to maybe save their necromancer, but didn’t. this is the moment where cytherea ties the noose.
