Here's Your Fall Cleanup Checklist To Prep Your Yard For Winter
Summer is almost over in most parts of the country. Soon, the leaves will turn all sorts of lovely colors and a cool breeze will fill the air. For homeowners, fall is also the time to do some crucial lawn and yard maintenance.
Cleaning up your yard in the fall can provide a plethora of benefits—from keeping unwanted pests away to giving your lawn and landscaping a lush head start come spring. Use this checklist as your guide to help you tackle a couple of tasks a day. And if you can get started early and do them regularly, it'll be for the better to avoid getting overwhelmed when the busy holiday season draws neare
Rake fallen leaves regularly.
Raking leaves may seem endless, especially with fresh layers piling up on the ground every minute. But it's probably the only crucial task to do even just a little bit every day before winter. Dead leaves, acorns, and other debris that sit on your lawn for too long can smother the grass, prevent growth, or cause a build-up of mold or bacteria that can cause damage. If left over the winter, they can become a heavy, wet barrier that promotes rot and prevents your grass from breathing properly. Also, mice and other pests can find a safe haven under those leaves and weeds. Staying on top of raking will not only make the job much less stressful but will also prevent problems with your yard’s drainage.
Clear out garden beds and put away plant accessories.
Fall cleanup is a great way to get your garden ready for winter, so don't forget to clean out your garden and flower beds. Remove all plant debris before the ground freezes or after the final harvest of the year to help prevent insects and diseases from returning even stronger the following spring. As you clear out all leaves and weeds, put away garden items such as labels, stakes, cages, and trellises, as well. Clean them to kill any infections and store them so they’ll be ready to reuse next year.
Remove weeds thoroughly.
Common lawn weeds are tough and will start proliferating as the temperatures cool off in the fall. And any that didn't die during the winter months will just come back stronger and more stubborn next spring. Make sure you thoroughly and regularly weed your garden and other landscaped areas so you will have fewer to deal with next spring.
Add a fresh layer of mulch.
Once you're done cleaning your garden beds, applying a healthy layer of mulch on your plant beds and around trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals will help keep them healthy through the winter. It helps the plants stay warmer and give their root systems extra protection against the cold elements. Adding mulch to your plants also helps prevent soil erosion and suppress weeds. You can opt for organic mulch such as straw, grass clippings, mulched leaves, and even pine needles to save money and add essential nutrients back into the soil.
Keep your trees and shrubs hydrated.
Winter conditions can be harsh and dry. Providing plenty of water for your trees and shrubs, whether newly planted or already established, will help them better withstand the harsh winter and avoid sustaining serious damage to their roots. If there is no snow on the ground or there hasn't been any decent rain, keep them well-hydrated so they can come back faster and stronger in the spring.
Prune dead branches and limbs.
Another important aspect of fall yard cleanup is removing dead or damaged branches from plants and trees. Dead branches can be a liability in the winter as heavy snow can cause them to break and cause more damage than if the limb had been pruned. They can even fall on your property in the event of extreme weather or wind. While you don't want to remove the branches too late in the season, it’s recommended to wait until after the leaves have fallen off your trees completely. Inspect your trees for any damaged or compromised branches, trim any overgrowth, and cut cracked, loose, or diseased limbs close to the trunk. Fall is also the time to prune spring-blooming perennials like lilacs, as well as shrubs that are prone to ice damage. Just take care not to prune any live or healthy branches so as not to damage your plants.
Continue mowing your lawn.
Summer might be ending, but it doesn't mean the same when it comes to mowing your lawn. Fall is the best time to mow your lawn to help it finish strong for the year and grow lush in the spring. Frequent mowing helps to thicken up the lawn, control weeds, and prevent it from matting, which makes it prone to fungus, such as snow mold.
Empty porch pots and containers.
The winter months can cause certain containers to chip and crack. Terra cotta pots, in particular, are easily susceptible to the freeze and thaw cycle. After cleaning your pots, store them in a dry, protected area, such as a shed or garage. If you do not have the extra space indoors, empty the pots, store them upside-down against the side of your house, and cover them with a tarp to keep the moisture out.
Clean and organize your gardening tools and gear.
Gardening season is almost over and you're preparing for a well-deserved break. But before cozying up indoors to enjoy a cup of your homemade pumpkin spice latte or warm hot chocolate, don’t forget to give your tools and equipment some TLC before you stow them away. Remove dirt from hand tools such as garden trowels, weeders, as well as shovels and spades. Empty and wash out spraying equipment. Sharpen the blades of pruners and mower blades, then coat them with a bit of vegetable oil to prevent rust. Making sure that all of your gardening tools are properly cleaned and stowed for the winter will prevent them from becoming dull, worn, or defective when you’re itching to get back to gardening in the spring.
Drain hoses and irrigation systems.
Lastly, before the freezing weather sets in, drain water from hoses, sprinklers, and drip irrigation systems. Standing water inside hoses and pipes can freeze, causing them to split or crack as they are incapable of handling the pressure of water freezing and expanding. This can cause water to seep down near your home's foundation or cause other structural problems that are challenging and costly to fix.

The Aesthetic and Practical Benefits of Using Decorative Mulch and Stones in Landscaping
The versatility of decorative mulch and stones allows you to play with different textures, enhancing visual depth and interest. Smooth river stones add a sleek, modern touch, while chunky bark mulch gives a more rustic and warm feel. By juxtaposing these elements against each other, you can create unique landscapes that are visually stimulating and tailored to the overall aesthetic of your outdoor area.
Practical Benefits of Decorative Mulch and Stones
Weed Suppression and Moisture Retention
One of the most significant practical benefits of using decorative mulch is its ability to suppress weeds, reducing the need for chemical herbicides. Mulch blocks sunlight from reaching the soil, preventing weed seeds from germinating. Furthermore, it helps in retaining soil moisture, ensuring that plants stay hydrated and reducing the need for frequent watering, which is especially beneficial in dryer climates.
Erosion Control and Soil Protection
Mulch and stones also protect the soil from erosion. During heavy rains, mulch absorbs impact, and stones act as barriers, keeping the soil in place and preventing nutrient loss. This is particularly valuable on sloped landscapes where rain can wash away soil, leaving plants vulnerable.
Low Maintenance Requirements
Incorporating decorative mulch and stones into your landscaping not only beautifies your space but also reduces maintenance requirements. Unlike grass or other fillers that require constant upkeep, mulch and stones are relatively low-maintenance. They do not need mowing, watering, or replanting, which saves time and effort for homeowners who prefer an attractive yet easy-to-maintain garden.
Choosing the Right Decorative Mulch and Stones
Types of Mulch for Different Landscaping Needs
Choosing the right type of mulch for your garden can greatly influence not only the health of your plants but also the overall appearance of your outdoor space. Organic mulches, such as bark chips, pine needles, and shredded leaves, are perfect for enhancing soil fertility as they decompose. They're ideal for garden beds where soil health is crucial. Inorganic mulches, like rubber or rock, may not enrich the soil but are excellent for creating long-lasting, visually appealing ground cover that controls weeds and retains moisture.
Popular Stone Options for Various Design Styles
Stones add a timeless element to any landscape design. For a rustic or natural look, river rocks and pebbles are perfect as they smooth over time and offer a soft, organic appearance. For modern designs, angular stones like slate or granite bring sharp lines and a sleek aesthetic. White marble chips can brighten shaded areas and add a touch of elegance. The choice of stone can drastically change the mood and style of your outdoor areas, so consider the overall design theme before making a decision.
Creative Ways to Incorporate Decorative Mulch and Stones in Landscaping
Edging Flowerbeds and Pathways
Using mulch and stones for edging can define the lines between different areas of your yard, creating a neat, organized appearance. Decorative stones are ideal for pathway edges, providing a durable boundary that withstands foot traffic. Mulch can be used to softly edge flower beds, enhancing both their beauty and health by retaining moisture and suppressing weeds.
Filling in Garden Beds and Planters
Mulch and stones are not only functional but also ornamental when used to fill garden beds and planters. They can contrast with the greens and blooms of your plants, making the colours pop spectacularly. Dark mulch enriches the visual depth of your garden, while bright stones can lighten up darker spaces.
Creating Focal Points and Accents
Strategically placed, stones can serve as stunning focal points or accents within your landscaping. A large, uniquely shaped boulder can anchor a garden, drawing the eye to a specific spot, while a scattering of coloured pebbles can highlight the bases of trees or shrubs. Using decorative mulch around these elements not only emphasizes their aesthetic but also contributes to the health of the surrounding plant life.
Combining Decorative Mulch and Stones with Plants
When integrating decorative mulch and stones into your landscaping, it's essential to consider not only their functional roles but also how they can complement and enhance your plant selections. This synergy between plants and decorative materials can transform your garden into a captivating visual ensemble.
Complementary Planting Schemes
Choosing the right plants to pair with decorative mulch and stones can make a world of difference. For instance, dark mulch can make the colours of flowering plants pop, while pale stones might highlight the green shades of foliage beautifully. Consider these pairings:
- For a zen-like atmosphere, use smooth river stones with ornamental grasses or bamboo.
- Pair vibrant annuals or perennials with cocoa mulch for a warm, rich contrast.
- Succulents and cacti are perfect with gravel or crushed stone, mimicking their natural arid environments.
Proper Placement for Balance and Harmony
The placement of decorative mulch and stones should be thoughtfully planned to create visual balance and harmony in your landscape. Use stones as borders and define pathways or garden beds, establishing clear, aesthetic lines. Mulch, meanwhile, can be used to fill in larger areas around plants, helping to reduce weed growth and retain moisture. Ensure that the scale and color of mulch and stones match or complement each other, avoiding a cluttered or mismatched appearance.
Maintenance Tips for Long-lasting Results
To make sure your landscaping remains as beautiful as the day it was installed, maintenance is key. Here are helpful tips to keep your decorative mulch and stones looking great.
Refreshing Mulch and Stones
Over time, mulch can decompose and stones can get embedded into the soil. Refresh your mulch annually to maintain its aesthetic appeal and functional benefits like moisture retention and temperature control. For stones, a good rinse with a hose or power washer can bring back their original lustre. Periodically check if they need to be repositioned or supplemented.
Weed Control Strategies
Even with mulch and stones, weeds can find their way through. To mitigate this, consider laying a weed barrier under the mulch and stones during initial installation. Regularly inspect and remove any weeds that do sprout, ensuring they don't take over or disrupt the visual and functional harmony of your landscape design. Employing pre-emergent herbicide treatments can also be an effective preventative measure.
Conclusion
Decorative mulch and stones are not just about elevating the aesthetics of your landscape; they bring a plethora of practical benefits that can make maintaining your outdoor spaces simpler and more sustainable. Whether you choose to highlight a garden path with crushed stone or protect your plants with organic mulch, both options provide a cost-effective way to enhance your home's curb appeal while promoting plant health and soil stability. Embrace these elements in your landscaping strategy to enjoy a blend of beauty and functionality that lasts.

The Bob July 12-16
Great Bear/Bob Marshall/Scapegoat Wilderness
This whole area of multiple wilderness designations, within the Lewis & Clark National Forest, is referred to by locals and hikers as “The Bob.” In the middle there is Benchmark (Front Country) Campground and the Benchmark Wilderness Ranch Camp, which accepts hiker boxes for resupplies. Otherwise, it’s a 30-40 mile hitch out to the nearest towns. We hiked five ~20 mile days from Maria’s Pass to Benchmark.
Day 1
We hitched out from East Glacier to Maria’s Pass then hiked about 5 miles with our friend Pony from the hostel. My ankles were feeling fine in the morning, but by midday they were in a lot of pain. That slowed my pacing considerably. We took our first “alt” to go around a mountain and shave off a few miles. On the alt, we went through Trapper’s Gulch, which had smooth terrain. Because I was still in pain, Owen suggested I try hiking this flat trail in my camp shoes. So I put on my rubber birks and felt significantly better almost immediately! I hiked in those the rest of the way to a lovely pine needle - cushioned campsite.
Day 2
We started the morning with an uphill, then we made decent time on some cruisy terrain. We started the day in the forest but transitioned into a burn zone for the afternoon. I found a good technique for wrapping my ankles with ace bandages that prevented my shoes from aggravating my Achilles. We made it to our desired mileage around 4:30, and the available camping was in direct, hot sunlight. So, we pushed on. There wasn’t great camping for a while. A big thunder storm rolled in, with particularly cold wind gusts. We braved our way through that and ended up going a little over 23 miles. We didn’t see the trail junction, but started the Spotted Bear Alternate. That was our intended trail anyways. We finally got to a ranger cabin right as the rain let up. There were 3 national forest employees hanging out there on a night off. We envied their fireplace and warm beds. They let us cook and eat dinner on their porch, then we crossed a river to set up camp on an island.
Day 3
This was a VERY COLD morning! Plus, all of our stuff was wet from the night before. We also had to cross a second river to start hiking. There weren’t any good ways to cross the river except to take off our shoes and ford it. It was mid-shin high and FRIGID. As we got hiking, my ankles were in a lot of pain. To add to the rough start, I hit my head on a downed tree.
However, the day turned around as the weather warmed a bit and we climbed up into the mountains. We ate lunch at Dean Lake with a view of Pentagon Peak. Then we continued into a picturesque mountain valley and climbed up Switchback Pass. A woman coming up the other side advised us to look out for the ripe wild huckleberries on the descent. We found them and ate many; we love huckleberries!
We stayed that night at a campground next to a river with a guy named Wonder from the hostel. I also beat Owen at a game of cribbage after dinner.
Day 4
The day started with a 9 mile cruise in the woods, following the Spotted Bear River. We finished the Spotted Bear Alternate and rejoined the “red line” (main trail). We climbed up a ridge and stayed high most of the day. We passed by My Lake, which seemed like a peaceful spot frequented my moose. Eventually we got to the Chinese Wall, which is a 12 mile long escarpment (a rock wall). It was quite stunning and probably the most beautiful feature we’d seen since Glacier. We walked along the wall for 5-6 miles then finally descended to a campground next to a hidden waterfall into a grotto/pool.
Day 5
We started the day with some cruisy woods walking, which made for fast miles. We got to a river and saw a black bear munching and hanging on the other side of the river. He acknowledged us but remained calm, because the river provided a buffer between us. We continued on and left the woods. We ran into a National Park Service volunteer who called himself Ranger Rick. He gave us tootsie rolls. We walked on and got hot and dry in the sun. We passed the time with some singing. It got hotter and drier. FINALLY, we got to a river, where we washed our clothes, filled our water, and ate lunch. We got to the Benchmark Campground and had to walk another 2 miles down the dirt road (in the sun) to the Benchmark Wilderness Ranch Camp. We eventually got a hitch in the back of a pickup. We got our food from the ranch, hitched back to the Straight Creek Trailhead, and walked in to find a camping spot. We found a great place to camp by the river and took a river bath. It was a lovely end to a hot day.

Week 10
Starry Sky and the Adventures of Water Simulation
I was getting really close to finished the water part of the last scene. The tutorial I followed was extremely helpful (and gave wonderful warnings about how to not make Blender crash 🙏)
The first finished water simulation, I noticed that for a calm scene, the water jumped around a little too much
youtube
some splashes are literally going so high up and back down
To help make the waves a little calmer, I turned down the power of the particles (to quickly explain, there’s a particle layer that pushes force onto the water simulation to give it that ripply wavy effect)
youtube
much better!
Also if you haven’t noticed, the HDRI did work! Although it’s not perfect with reflections, it fits with the scene really well. The above two videos are viewport render though
Here is the actual render with Eevee! With some variations
youtube
Also testing whether I should do rain
I wanted to try to make rain particle effects to add to the atmosphere but I ran into some issues...
It’s difficult to loop unless you time it perfectly
The “transparent” rain just look like dark blobs--not very good looking
The star rain idea looks strange when not falling from the stars on scene
Basically, if I would like to add some rain, I’d have to animate it myself through 2D. And I’m learning towards star rain, which would happen when the character enters the scene! Otherwise it’d be more calm.
Finally all the 3D scenes have been made! Now it’ll be time to focus on all things 2D.
Continuing Character design
The first character design acts like the base for the rest of the outfits this character is going to have, so I tried to modify it to reflect the specific scenes she’s in.
I wanted to go in order, but I was having trouble making her second outfit because I didn’t know where I wanted the outfit to end up. So, I started on the very last outfit in the starry sky scene:
Tumblr media
idea sketches
I wanted something elegant, an outfit that shows her “final” fairy form while the outfit also staying true to her first one. I really liked the idea of long tails in the back of her dress, and I added some cute star decals as well. I also wanted her skin to be more blue pigmented around her hands and feet, but I thought about it and realized it’d be difficult to animate a gradient consistently.
The wings I wanted to also make star themed to complete the outfit and help reflect the scene. As the final wings, I wanted something ornate yet easy to draw multiple times, so why not have a connected pattern of stars. I hope will make it easier, while also being really pretty!
With the final outfit planned, I went back to the second scene’s outfit, a kind of transition period between the first and last scene. I wanted there to be a mix of elements from both that helps anticipate the changes the character is going through.
Tumblr media
took a little longer with this one--idea sketches
Here her outfit alludes to the eventual tails, and the darkening of the clothes. Her wings are also simple and fit with the scene--since this is a transition period, she hasn’t fully formed her identity but just grew wings.
Side note: for the longest time, I didn’t know what hair accessories she could have on her head, as you can see in the sketches, I tried a variety of things: from flowers at the very beginning to pine needles and then finally landing on the idea of clouds on her head. It’s something I feel is iconic to the scene and to the time of dusk. I decided to make them asymmetrical too because having them be the same felt a bit funny. It could also represent the uneasiness in transition I suppose.
Turnarounds
Here are rest of the turnarounds!
Tumblr media
rooftops dusk
Tumblr media
starry night sky (with glowing accents to help her stand out of the scene more)
Tumblr media
alternate colors to make it stand out more (not sure which is better)
Next Steps
Now that all the elements are now done, it’d time to put everything together into a final animation! By next week I’d hope to have the following:
An animatic of what’s going to happen
Or even a rough animation at this point of certain scenes done
Design some portals if possible (so that they look cool)
My idea has shifted a little bit since I’ve last done storyboards, so I hop nailing down the animatic will bring the same old ideas, while also help me finalize the newer details (like this last scene entirely)
In terms of what software I’m going to use, I’ve been debating between ToonBoom, a professional software used by animators, or use Blender grease pencil, a software that has been gaining a lot of traction and could help me just stay in one software.
Both are cool and I’ve heard some opinions from online, to people close to me, but I’m still wondering what’s better. Potentially I just may stick to Blender, but we’ll see

The Smell of Fall
By Cynthia Brian
“Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away; Lengthen night and shorten day! Every leaf speaks bliss to me, Fluttering from the autumn tree...” ~Emily Brontë
 When it rained this past week, did you smell it? The scent of earth mixed with fallen leaves and decomposing plant matter signals the transition of the seasons. On the calendar, autumn began on September 22, 2022, but it wasn’t until November that I inhaled this intoxicating aroma that brought back childhood memories of the end of harvest, jumping in piles of leaves, and blazing bonfires.
In just a week, it seemed that so many trees changed their wardrobe from vibrant green to sunset colors of amber, gold, red, bronze, and yellow. The “foliage show” is late here in California, yet it is glorious. As the leaves turn, they also drop, blanketing our landscapes with a marvelous source of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and nutrients that the soil craves.  As much as you want to tidy your garden, refrain from raking the leaves into your green bin. Leave a layer of leaves on the ground to encourage the photosynthesis process in the natural circle of life. If leaves are too big, mow or cut them and add them to a compost pile with food scraps, lawn clippings, eggshells, coffee grounds, and other biodegradables. After a few months, you’ll have a rich mulch filled with worms and beneficial microbes to add back into your garden at no cost to you. When you add organic materials to your soil, you are providing food for the organisms that improve soil aeration and drainage while reducing soil compaction. The nutrients will release over time
As we inhale the delicious flavors of fall and experience the cooler temperatures, it is also time to perform tasks in preparation for winter.
AUTUMN CHORES
ü  CLEAN patio furniture before storing or covering it for the season. It is especially critical to remove bird droppings left on your umbrellas, hammocks, or other furniture.
ü  TURN OFF sprinkler systems.
ü  CHECK for any irrigation leaks.
ü  LEAVE leaves where they fall, spread them around your garden, or add them to a compost pile.
ü  FERTILIZE grass, especially when it is going to rain.
ü  REMOVE debris, sticks, and weeds from garden beds.
ü  PLANT cover crops to fix nitrogen. Fava beans, mustard, and clovers are excellent choices.
ü  PICK pumpkins, apples, guavas, squash, and any fruits or vegetables left hanging before frost and rain.
ü  DIVIDE overgrown clumps of perennials such as daylilies, agapanthus, iris, or naked ladies. Move them to other locations or share them with fellow gardeners.
ü  COVER any exposed soil with straw, grass clippings, aged wood chips, pine needles, or even shredded newspaper to reduce weed growth, moderate soil temperatures, retain moisture, and reduce erosion over winter.
ü  BUY six packs of perennials including columbine, carnations, penstemon, and coral bells.
ü  BRIGHTEN your fall garden with pops of color from pansies, cyclamen, violas, Mums, stock, Iceland poppies, and primroses.
ü  FIND favorite fall color trees to add to your landscape where selections are vast at your local nursery.
ü  SCATTER California wildflower seeds including poppies and lupines and sow seeds of sweet Alyssum, bachelor buttons, forget-me-nots, and milkweed.
ü  DEADHEAD roses for continued blooms during the holidays.
ü  PRUNE dead branches from trees and shrubs.
ü  BEWARE hungry coyotes have been on a rampage killing poultry, cats, and small dogs. Keep your animals and small children safe.
ü  ENJOY the many colors of lantana blooming throughout fall in purple, orange, red, white, and yellow.
ü  GET READY to plant bulbs towards the end of the month for a spring show.
 IN THE VEGETABLE GARDEN
During a cold winter, there is nothing better than knowing that you have organic, tasty, greens and vegetables growing right outside your door. Fall is the best time to get these nutritious edibles going for a bountiful harvest in the new year. Most of these plants prefer extra nitrogen. Side-dress them with a balanced fertilizer as they grow.
Plant seeds or seedlings of:
Varieties of lettuce
Asian greens
Spinach
Arugula
Swiss Chard
Chicory
Kale
Cress
Beets
Cabbage
Radish
Broccoli
Broccoli rabe
Carrots
Cauliflower
Kohlrabi
Peas
Turnips
Make sure to plant shallots and garlic now to harvest next summer.

 Although I don’t like the darkness that descends so much earlier when I still have so many chores to complete, I am reveling in the cooler days that allow for laboring longer with less strain. Digging in the dirt in fall bequeaths the most luscious autumn aromas…musty, musky, intoxicatingly earthy. I wish I could bottle it!
Thank you to so many readers who sent me notes of healing. You touched my heart and my spirit, and I am very appreciative. I am following my own advice. Each day anew…and a wee bit slower!
Go outside and breathe in the fragrance of fall and know that, as gardeners, we will be resting soon, along with Mother Nature.

Will Graham x Non Binary S/O
Tumblr media
of course :)
Also cause Hannibal is obviously set in Virginia, I have no idea how people get their Christmas trees, either from a field or a store, so I’m just going off how I do it every year :)
Tumblr media
- It had taken you long enough to find the right one
- Wandering through the slightly muddy fields, sharp pine needles stabbing into your arm as you brushed past the different trees
- You had to find one that’s just right
- Will had gone with you, naturally, after all you were looking for a tree for his house.
- Winston had came too, weaving in between the trees barking happily
- And you’d finally found the right one, just as rain began to drizzle down
- So when you’d finally got it inside the house, in the corner, close to the fireplace, you’d let out a sigh of relief
- Will flopped down on the sofa
- “Thank god” He muttered, and you pointed at him, a playful frown on your face
- “Ah, don’t sit down now, we still have to decorate it” You tell him, and he doesn’t even hide his grown, as he reluctantly stands, wrapping his arms around you, resting his chin on your forehead
- “We could do it tomorrow?” He asks, and you shake your head, chuckling into his chest
- “Nope, we’re doing it today” You said, and then add
- “Once we’re done we can, make hot chocolate? And cuddle?” You suggested, and he pulled back, watching you, before smiling, and rolling his eyes ever so slightly
- “Fine” He says, puling back, turning around to pick up a box of baubles you’d already bought for this occasion.
- “Let’s get this over with”
- A good hour later, the tree was finished
- The lights turned on, and the fire lit
- And as you cuddled under the blanket you smiled at Will
- “It was worth it” You grin, and he looks at you, before glancing at the tree
- “It was”

Nothing in Particular Update #2
It’s the Nothing and Particular and Everything update part two: the electric booglaloo. This one is long, so strap in.
It’s been a while since I wrote an update for this story. To be honest, this one gave me a lot of stress, but here I am! Writing this story feels like it is going very slow. I keep telling myself I’ve made a lot of progress (which is true, I have) but for some reason it doesn’t feel like I have? This is likely just my own insecurity. To be frank, I can’t believe I’m still writing this story. If you had told me in February that I’d still be writing this when the weather got warm, I would have laughed.
I am SO excited that I will finally be able to focus on writing now that I’m out of school. I’m afraid to speak the rough deadline that I’ve given myself for this story (the end of August-early September) but now that I’ve spoken it into existence, I hope I can finish! (I hope I can stop watching dumb videogame playthroughs and listening to The Magnus Archives and get something done)
Here is a link to the story introduction and previous update!
TAGLIST (ask to be +/-); @wannabeauthorzofija @a-completely-normal-writer @baguettethebooklover @corkytheguar @writeherewaiting
STORY CHANGES/THOUGHTS/IDEAS:
Here is a big one: I’ve been trying to write this story for myself. I started writing Ray’s story from a place that was personal to me, but I feel like, as that part of myself has begun to heal, I’ve started to think about what a reader would want out of the story. I’m realizing that this is my story so it has to be what I want. Drafts are drafts for a reason, so I’m going to try to get better at letting myself explore what is fun to me.
I always thought I was a discovery writer (I still sort of think I am) but as I’ve finished small sections of the story, I am finding that it’s very helpful to do a rough outline of scenes in upcoming chapters. (I also recommend turning to this if something doesn’t work and you need to retrace your steps!) Just helps me feel more organized!
Jude’s character has got to be one of the most difficult personalities I’ve ever written. Putting her beside Ray just makes it harder. Where Ray is secretive and keeps to herself, Jude is ready to unpack her entire life’s story to anyone. I find that I really have to slow down when writing their interactions. I know this is going to be nowhere near perfect in the first draft, but I think it is a main contributor to my slow writing.
I really like this little narrative I’ve created in the background of the main plot with Ray and Lonan. I love writing these scenes because it’s a way for me to use Lonan when he’s not actively with Ray and to show why Ray is predetermined about things at certain points. Also I love their friendship so much <3
CONGRATULATIONS TO ME on starting to read again because I forgot how much of a help reading other people’s stories can be when you’re struggling with your own oml
I now have a set timeline for the story! Takes place ~4-5 months.
I did that thing where you write a letter from the characters’ perspectives and that was kind of fun
Also just for fun I thought I’d add in that I spent an hour and a half last week filling up a page in my sketchbook with diagrams of the plot. It feels good to be a mad scientist
EXCERPTS UNDER THE CUT!
*At this point, I’m only sharing writing that I am really proud of in order not to spoil the story! This is because I am unsure whether I want to publish this story someday. With that said, that does NOT give you permission to steal my ideas!
CHAPTER: NIGHT CRIES
#1
Tumblr media
In the last week of summer, I did everything I could to avoid post-vacation blues. I rode my bike along the gravel roads with no destination, wore my dark sunglasses to people-watch, and fed salami to the minnows that floated on the cusps of boulders. Usually, I sat still for so long that my elbows turned a deep shade of red and the blood in my toes buzzed.
New pockets seemed to open up in Point Blink every day. And with them, came new people. Most of them were older – a middle aged woman who caked her lipstick on, an uncle estranged from his brother, a couple who had miscarried. I hadn’t forgotten about the kids at Mothouse. It was impossible not to think about them. It wasn’t just that I’d never seen them before.
#2
Tumblr media
The girl’s limp cigarette bled a trail of smoke that seeped into my Vans. My shirt folded like skin over my bed post. Haunted the room – foiled my mauve sheets and teased my locks. Swept the curtains apart and heated the oak floor. Beams of moonlight leapt to my bookcases; highlighted the posters from various podcasts and bands that I listened to. Wind whistled when I was too still. She forced me to look outside, onto the dark cul-de-sac lit by the reflections of forming rain puddles. No matter whether I sat at my desk or burrowed under my sheets, I felt out of place. She made my bedroom louder. She made my bedroom quieter.
I decided it would probably be best if I never saw her again.
To be honest, I don’t remember much about writing this chapter because it was over a month ago (sorry) but I’m still quite happy with the prose! This comes in after Ray sees Jude for the first time at Mothouse. Based on a first impression, decides that she might want be friends with Jude.
CHAPTER: SORRY
#1
Tumblr media
If you spend any long amount of time with someone, you’ll become a thief to their behaviors. If I stared long enough, trees began to replace all of the people we’d ever seen. Oaks had roots that serpentined the ground like children splashing in the bay, pines with needles like spindly old hands, maples with hollows like watchful eyes – all things Lonan had taught me to observe.
CHAPTER: GHOSTS
Tumblr media
Then there was the sea – violent and knowing as it romped within bays and alcoves. She had eaten me many times before, both my father and Lonan too. Gulped them as if they were shining plastic wrappings left behind after a meal. I spited her for inviting me once again. I reached up again to grapple with the next rung. It twisted and offered a low whistle.
In these two chapters, Ray is on a photography trip with her class. This is the first time she’s been on this annual trip without Lonan. She left that morning with a goal of being independent and learning to get on with one of the only people she has felt close to. I realize now that the Ghost excerpt sort of sounds like her dad and Lonan have drowned?? Which was not my intention??
CHAPTER: A DIVINE INTERVENTION
#1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Do you believe in ghosts?” A raspy voice teased from behind me. Cigarette smoke tickled the words, like they were stuck together with jelly inside of her. The question wasn’t particularly calming, but it strengthened my grip on reality. As if the foiled leaves, bark, and dandelions had sprung from the ground and begun to float, they came crashing back down.
I was made of stone.
“I’m not a ghost,” Jude said. “If I was, a ladder would be a pretty counteractive way to outrun me. I could just float up there and haunt you.”
“Maybe you’re a ghost,” she asked, her voice distant.
I shifted my grasp up and down the sides of the ladder. “What?”
“Don’t you believe in ghosts?”
I was reading back some of Ray and Jude’s conversation and there are so many snippets of dialogue that make me laugh because I totally forgot I wrote them... but UGhhH I don’t know if I want to share them because I don’t know whether or not I want to try and publish the story someday. Speaking of that, it’s sort of because it’s so personal to me? I don’t know (this is for future me to pursue) Honestly though, reading these back has made me really happy :)
#2
Tumblr media
I wanted to shake her by the shoulders. She acted as though Point Blink could breathe – as though corpses in the cemetery might pull the grass away like dead skin, neighbors would draw blades, and blood-salt would stain her clothes rather than that from the sea. “Trust me, they’ll forgive you. But, I’m just saying, most people around here don’t care nearly as much as you think so. Most of them are way older anyways, so they’re tired of us.”
“Is that you complimenting yourself?” Jude asked.
“Not intentionally,” I said, “but I will take it.”
She laughed. “You shouldn’t be so nice to strangers.”
I wasn’t trying to be. I just didn’t think I wanted her to dislike me.
#3
Tumblr media
“I don’t think it’s a bad thing or a good thing,” Jude said. “Being good gets you tucked into a thousand different memories. Being good makes you live a lifetime.”
I almost laughed, but then I wondered what I was to her now. “I don’t talk to lots of people.”
“Sometimes there aren’t many people to talk to. But I thought you would have loads of friends.”
I wasn’t sure what to say to that. “I thought you would too.”
Alarm like grief lit her eyes, but she laughed. I did too.
“You hardly know me,” she said quietly.
Then the girls explore some old newspapers and letters in a fire tower! Spooky fun!
CHAPTER: YOU LET THIS HAPPEN
Tumblr media
This isn’t a major spoiler as it’s literally in the blurb I wrote, but Ray and Jude are caught (targeted..??)  in a fire. Ray is brought back to a field where she is questioned.
CHAPTER: NOTHING HAPPENS
Tumblr media
He was quiet for several moments while he painted a picture with what little details I had given him, then said, “It’s unfair. I think that’s why it hurts.”
“Because we almost got hurt?”
“No. Because it came true.”
His gentle, ragged voice made me think I could tell him anything. Sometimes, I think that, even then, he knew I left something out.
Ray talks to Lonan after the fire... She’s being a bit dishonest about what actually happened.
CHAPTER: WHY NOT
Tumblr media
I remember how the barest amount of red light glared across Lonan’s entire scalp and washed his boyish curls magenta from the roots out. When Jude leaned back on the counter, she melded into the darkness.
This chapter is just part of the narrative that I created with Ray and Lonan’s friendship. There isn’t much I want to spoil from it, but I liked this paragraph!
CHAPTER: INEVITABLE
Tumblr media
“We didn’t do anything,” I said.
“Someone did. Why won’t you believe me?”
 “I think I would remember whether or not someone was there with us,” I said, “even if we didn’t have the picture.”
This was untrue. I hung lots of photos in my room. A long time would pass before I went to a restaurant again, or a specific coven on one of the beaches, or an outfit that I wore, and I would look into one of my pictures and remember it, and then I would be quite angry with myself that I had almost forgotten that thing forever.
“I don’t think you understand what I mean,” Jude said. I didn’t like the way she’d lowered her voice. She sounded different every time I saw her. She reached out her arm so our photos were side by side and our fingers were almost touching. “I don’t think you want to.”
Ray finds herself alone in the school’s dark room with Jude. Based on the contents of one of her photos, she tries to convince Ray that there is more to the fire than what meets the eye.
CHAPTER: (this one is untitled)
Tumblr media
I didn’t mind that he followed me everywhere. Even when he was quiet, I didn’t find it strange to be around him. We sat silently through films and went on walks. Once, he had fallen asleep while watching The Iron Giant in my bed. I didn’t know if I should wake him up once it ended. I tried not to stare at him. He’d rolled onto his side and bundled himself in one of my blankets covered in stars up to his shoulders so only his small face poked out like a baby owl’s. His soft breath messed his dirty gold coils. They were at their longest. Except for the ebbing light from a candle on my desk, my house was asleep – Lonan needed to go home.
For the first time, I wondered if anyone cared where he was.
Another small part of the little friendship narrative! (This really is the part of the story where I get nostalgic for my childhood, isn’t it) Ray starts to discover more about Lonan’s home life in this part of the story, but there’s not much that I think I want to reveal about that for now.
CHAPTER: THE CRUX OF IT
Tumblr media
Why did I feel so paranoid? I found myself staring out the window, into the film of blue that the late sun shown onto the grass and trying to remember what summer felt like.
My main problem was that I didn’t know how to talk to Jude unless it was about Sugarfell. I ran from the hush of cigarette smoke behind closing doors and heard her loud voice in conversations. Even though there might have still been a part of me that wanted to be friends with her, I didn’t have much to base that feeling off of. I could have spent hours clicking the little pieces of her that I had together, but the crux of it was that I would never know Jude unless I forced myself to.
For some reason, that really scared me.
I spent all week trying to think of what to say to her. By Friday afternoon, I still had nothing.
I left off writing with Ray actively avoiding Jude’s little investigation into the arsonist. Ray doesn’t want to be involved in this because she feels that it will throw her sense of normalcy off course. She really just wants to learn how to adapt to a life without her best friend. (It doesn’t help that she’s got fresh trauma)
What will Ray decide? I don’t know. We shall see. (just kidding I know)
Sorry this update was longer! I think I would like to start updating more often than once a month just because they would be shorter and those of you reading this won’t forget what happened in the last update. There are thousands and thousands of words that didn’t show up in this update because - like I said - I don’t know whether I want to publish this story ever?? I’ll probably talk more about this in a separate update.
Thank you so much to those of you who read about my story! I hope you enjoy it!
:)
p.s. btw I now have a myWriteClub account! You can check it out here and stalk me as I tragically fail my writing goals!

for this month's recommendations, i decided to go with the theme KISSES GALORE in honour of valentine's day. all of the below works have been posted in the month of february 2021 and hand selected by me <3
Sowing Discord by @chronologicalimplosion
A group of hyper-religious, homophobic protesters on campus ruins David's post-lunch good mood and he sends a half-joking message to the LGBTQ+ Discord server about staging a counterprotest. Constant lurker Patrick comes running.
Rated T for TEEN & UP AUDIENCES; 4,089 words; M/M; TAGGED for Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Original Characters, Alternative Universe, Alternative Universe - College/University, Homophobia, First Kiss, Epistolary, kind of
"This work features the inclusion of messages sent in Discord channels, a social media app I've never seen interrogated into a fanfiction piece before. The perfect balance of humour as well as tenderness makes this the ideal read to round out the month of love."
falling into place like dominos by @davidbrewer
Alexis spins the bottle and Stevie doesn’t know if she wants it to stop in front of her, or if she’s hoping it points literally anywhere else. She thinks she’ll figure it out when it stops moving, but… even with the neck of the bottle unmistakably pointing at her foot, she still can’t identify what the feeling is. Is that happiness or dread settling in the pit of her stomach? Since when do those completely different things feel exactly the same? If she’s being honest, though, it feels like a combination of things. It’s that feeling you get right before you do something you know you might regret later… like throwing back a jello shot (which she wishes she had done), calling an ex at 3am, or maybe jumping out of a plane.
David and Patrick hold a second housewarming party, this time at their newly-renovated cottage. For old times' sake, they decide to play spin the bottle. Meanwhile, Stevie has been wrestling with her feelings for Alexis since she left for New York... and it never occurred to her that those feelings could flow both ways.
Rated M for MATURE AUDIENCES; 4,897 words; F/F; TAGGED for Stevie Budd & Alexis Rose, Stevie Budd/Alexis Rose, Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Post-Canon, Lesbian Stevie Budd, First (Real) Kiss, Alcohol, Spin the Bottle, Queer Themes, Sexuality Crisis, (Although it's more of a frustrated confusing than a crisis tbh)
"The author's ability to voice every character (but specifically Alexis) will never fail to astound me; their inner voice for Stevie is the most notable in this work, however. Even the friendship/sibling dynamics between David and Alexis and as well as Stevie and Patrick are absolute perfection. One of the best 'Housewarming' codas I've ever endulged in and I can confidently says so."
Until I Lose My Breath by @the-kellephant
How could she have missed the fact that she was in love with Twyla?
Rated T for TEEN & UP AUDIENCES; 814 words; F/F; TAGGED for Stevie Budd/Twyla Sands, Friends to Lovers, First Kiss, Femslash February, Bisexual Stevie Budd, Lesbian Twyla Sands
"A lovely introspective piece about sapphic feelings and how they can often be blindsided by denial if not provided with the proper care or attention."
You can Stand Under my Umbrella by @agoodpersonrose
David thought the day couldn't possibly get any worse. But then it started to rain.
43. You both reach for the last umbrella in the store on a rainy day.
Rated T for TEEN & UP AUDIENCES; 2,721 words; M/M; TAGGED for Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Alternative Universe - Canon Divergence, Tumblr Prompt, Meet-Cute, First Kiss, First Meetings, Awkward Flirting, Kissing in the Rain, Umbrellas, Fluff and Humour, Tooth-Rotting Fluff, Prompt Fill, One Shot
"I have nothing to say besides this is hands down the most cute way this prompt could've been filled and I applaud Becca for her ability to write such tender moments in a way underlined with laughs."
Ten Tender Kisses by @cheesecurdsgravyandfries
Ten drabbles featuring ten tender kisses.
Rated G for GENERAL AUDIENCES; 1,110 words; M/M; TAGGED for Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Fluff, tender kisses, Canon Compliant
"Reading this was pure joy. The happiness I felt from the first drabble continued to grow the longer I scrolled which is truly a beautiful feeling. Their banter is so perfectly in character and the dynamic the author has created between David and Patrick is a skill I envy."
I Didn't Know it was a Crush, David by squigmistress
David and Patrick arrive home after The Premiere and David wants to talk more about some of the wild stuff Patrick said when he was high on pain meds. What he doesn't expect is Patrick's big, gay feelings. But damn, does he love him for it. OR Patrick needs emotional safety to process some feelings and, of course, David is more than happy to hold him through it.
Rated T for TEEN & UP AUDIENCES; 1,548 words; M/M; TAGGED for Patrick Brewer/David Rose, david rose - Relationship, Queer Themes, Coming Out, Episode: s06e05 The Premiere, Coda, Feelings, Feelings Realisation, Gay, Canon Gay Character, Family Issues, Intimacy, Non-Sexual Intimacy, Anger
"Now, I've always been a sucker for introspective works, but this took it to a brand new level. It's such a fine needle to thread; however, the author does an astounding job at cataloguing the growth/development of Patrick's emotions."
Be your remedy by @jessx2231
Patrick closes his eyes and brings to mind all the times David has put on music while Patrick is engrossed in a book or his phone or even the occasional weekend work task. Eventually, David will slink into his space, just enough to rest his head in Patrick’s lap. He doesn’t always do so with the intent to fall asleep, but it’s usually not long before Patrick’s fingers involuntarily find their way into David’s hair — much like they are now — and David’s breath will even out for a while.
He can definitely make an abridged version of that happen.
Or, David can't sleep and Patrick helps.
Rated G for GENERAL AUDIENCES; Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings; 2,048 words; M/M; TAGGED for Patrick Brewer/David Rose, Fluff, Established Relationship, Canon Compliant, Post-Canon, Married Life, very mild descriptions of depressive symptoms, but really just some very soft sleepy boys
"A warm hug is the best way I can describe this. Also, I already knew I need a Patrick Brewer in my life, but this solidified that."
the paths that your eyes wander down by @anniemurphys apart of falling in love at a coffee shop by them, @thankstwy, and @landofsonlali
Written for the prompt: "Twyla and Alexis reunite in NYC."
Alexis finds Twyla at a tiny corner table.
Rated G for GENERAL AUDIENCES; 568 words; F/F; TAGGED for Alexis Rose/Twyla Sands, Post-Canon
"The absolute perfect romantic comedy moment paired with some of the most in-character Alexis dialogue I've seen in awhile, not to mention how beautifully the mutual pining is broken."
a sense of expectation hanging in the air by Anonymous (i'll add the author once reveals are out for the Season 7 collection !)
Stevie starts to realize she has feelings for Ruth. How long though, will it take for her to tell Ruth that?
Rated M for MATURE AUDIENCES; 6,548 words; F/F; TAGGED for Stevie Budd/Ruth Clancy, Stevie Budd & Alexis Rose & Twyla Sands, Stevie Budd & David Rose, Stevie Budd & Patrick Brewer, Alexis Rose/Twyla Sands, Post-Canon, Getting Together, Sharing a Bed, Cuddling & Snuggling, Making Out, Fluff, Texting, Female Friendship, Episode: s07e08 RMG, Workplace Relationship
"The support from Stevie's friends—Alexis, Twyla, David, and Patrick—is so incredibly lovely. Despite the secret crushes, Stevie and Ruth refuse to let anything get in the way of them getting together and it's such a wonderful thing to see them immediately all-in the relationship."
got a fistful of four leaf clovers by iphigenias
Two weeks before Christmas Alexis calls David.
“So I think I like someone,” she says.
Rated T for TEEN & UP AUDIENCES; 1,754 words; F/F; TAGGED for Post-Canon, Getting Together, Femslash February, home is a place AND a person!
"Alexis's slow burn of building feelings for Twyla melts my heart. That being said, the realistic depiction of the difficulties that come with change provides a certain depth to this story it needs."

The blood comes closer.
It races forward, whipping around each coil before surging down the straightaways in a rush of crimson. It takes its time somehow too, winding in long, lazy loops, meandering through the tangled labyrinth of tubing so slowly that a fleeting bit of hope tries to spark in my chest.
But I know better. The blood never stops.
It always comes closer.
Isn't it thrilling, Detective?
Closer and closer.
We'll be inseparable after this!
His words jolt me into a sudden frenzy and I thrash against the bindings and the solid weight of his hand pinning my hip to the table. A ragged, primal scream tears from my throat as I jerk and twist until the straps slice into my flesh. I snap forward to bite the needle lodged in my arm, to rip it free with my teeth, but his hand clamps around my neck and slams my head against the table. White light and pain explode into my vision, and his fingers tighten ever-so-slightly in a warning I don't heed.
But it doesn't matter.
No matter how much I struggle, his blood comes closer. Closer and closer.
And there's nothing I can do to stop it.
Fear spikes through me as I continue resisting in a body that begins to feel more and more distant. All I can hear is the loud echo of his heavy, excited panting. All I can smell is his sweat mixed with a sickening metallic tang. And all I can feel is the clammy hand pinched around my thigh, his fingers squeezing with anticipation and—
There will always be a part of me inside of you.
I twist awake from the nightmare with a heaving gasp.
Bile surges hot into my throat and I swallow hard against it. My heart thunders in my chest, pounding something wild and desperate into my skull, into my ears. For a terrifying moment, I can't sense anything except the deafening throb of blood.
But…
Slowly, gradually, it recedes to the sound of rain.
And I finally choke down a long, shuddering breath.
I'm not sure how long I lie there afterward, sucking in air, my body buzzing unpleasantly while I stare at the ceiling, but eventually I become aware of just how warm I am and kick myself free of my joggers and the sheets. A shiver ripples up my spine as my bare legs are exposed, and I absently blow at a few damp strands of hair plastered to my cheek. After another long moment, I sigh and roll over to put my feet on the floor, burying my face in my hands while I wait, once again, for the trembling to die down.
Never thought I'd miss the semester when my roommate's alarm clock blasted me awake every morning while she power-slept through it, but… here I am. Getting more misty-eyed and sentimental by the second.
Ah, the halcyon days when the mystery of who left the dishes in the sink was the biggest concern in my life.
Snorting softly, I crack my neck a few times before I push off the bed and shuffle into the bathroom. I don't bother with the light. Or the mirror. I already know I look like shit. Instead, I hunch over the sink to alternate between drinking from the tap so greedily I start coughing and drowning my face in the cold water. I bury it in a towel afterward too, for good measure, pressing myself so deeply into the cotton that it's actually a little difficult to breathe.
I don't know why I do it. Or why I stay there as long as I do.
Silent. Stiff.
Suffocating.
But I don't pull away.
Not until I hear the faint squeaking of cloth and realize my fingers have twisted themselves into fists and I'm clutching the towel so hard that my hands are shaking. As I stare down at it, something else twists inside me too. Some fierce and overwhelming urge that demands I keep going. That I tear it in half. Rip it up. Shred it apart entirely.
My jaw clenches under the force of it, until my teeth start to squeak too.
Then—for some absurd fucking reason—I picture Nate kneeling over the destroyed towel, a sad little frown on his face as he bemoans the thread count.
And a laugh sputters out of me instead.
It's long and wheezing and only slightly hysterical, but I can't help it. The image is just so— ridiculous and bewildering and, honestly, pretty fucking funny.
As my body shakes with laughter, I drop the towel into the sink and curl forward to put my face in my hands. Tears bead at the corners of my eyes and my stomach starts to hurt from the effort. Tightness cinches around my chest too, and claws up to lodge in my throat. Heat prickles and swells across my face, and my lip trembles and my eyes begin to sting and I suddenly know exactly what's fucking coming.
So I brace against it.
It doesn't matter.
And I hold it back.
It doesn't. It really doesn't.
Until it gradually passes.
It's over and done.
I take a deep, shuddering, and practiced breath afterwards, sniffling just enough to clear it away before I flick the unshed moisture from my eyes.
Then, without another thought, I whip the towel around the rack unharmed and walk back into my room.
I move towards the bed, but I pause as I pass into the cool air flowing in through the window. My arms fold instinctively against it, even though the chill brushes pleasantly across my uncomfortably hot face. I glance over at the damp and tangled mess of sheets awaiting me and frown. I frown harder knowing, as usual, I'll probably only end up twisting around in them until it's too bright to pretend I have a chance of falling back asleep.
And, with that decidedly unappealing thought in mind, I turn to face the rain instead.
The tang of cold moisture and pine drifts inside, and I inhale it eagerly. I always did enjoy late summer in Wayhaven, when the storms roll back in to chase away the heat. The towering dark clouds, the breeze snapping every banner, awning, and flagpole in the Square, the promise of wet earth on the wind and the heavy stillness right before the downpour rips free—it's hard not to get excited in the presence of something so magnificently powerful.
Lightning flickers across the sky as if in agreement, and thunder follows it a few moments later in the distance, a long and low rumble that rattles the glass in the windowpane.
I smile softly, shifting a hand to stroke my neck while the breeze soothes my flushed skin.
Yesterday afternoon seems so distant now, though. I remember that excitement when I left the station, the stupid little grin on my face when it started pouring and Tina's shrieks as she ran back into the doorway to shout goodbye. I remember driving up here too, with my window rolled down, nothing but total contentment in my heart as the rain streaked over the windshield and across my knuckles. And I remember walking into the Warehouse, jacket dripping, and that dull ache of happiness that rolled through me as familiar voices called out in greeting and my eyes fell on the steaming mug waiting by the spot where I usually sit.
I remember it, but… right here, now, alone in the dark once more, it's hard to believe any of it actually happened to me.
It's hard to believe I ever really felt that way at all. It almost seems… borrowed. Like all of its brightness belongs to someone else entirely.
And this shit, right now, is what I truly am—and all I'll ever know.
A familiar tightness claws up my throat again. My eyes start to sting.
"Scared of the storm, sweetheart?"
I startle immediately and startle hard.
My attention snaps to the doorway, only to recognize a dark and familiar figure leaning against the frame.
Fuck—I hadn't even heard him open the door! Or knock, I want to add, before I remember it's Mason and doors are one of the few things he actually won't do.
Shit.
I take a deep breath, roll my shoulders back and shoot him a smirk that I don't really feel.
"Petrified.”
Mason smirks in return. "Then maybe I should come in and make you feel safe. Hold you very close to me until it passes."
I can't help the soft chuckle that escapes my lips as I glance away. My arms folds a bit tighter around myself and I shift slightly on the spot. “Not sure I'm in the mood for that kind of comfort right now.”
“Lucky for you, that's not the only kind I can offer.”
My brow arcs in question—and curiosity. I'm not sure how much I believe him, but… I am always interested to see what he'll try.
Without looking away from the window, I give him a small nod of invitation to come in.
The door clicks shut, and heat soon radiates across my bare skin through the loose, open-backed shirt I wore to bed. Mason's hands slide over my hips from behind, his fingers splaying briefly, giving just the slightest squeeze, before he wraps his arms around me and settles them into a fold beneath my own. He rests his chin on top of my head too—something new he's started doing lately, though I suppose I am at perfect chin-resting height—and he gently pulls me back against him.
A sigh escapes me as he does, louder than I would've intended. And maybe he wasn't entirely bullshitting about that comfort.
Because I can't deny just how damn good it feels to be held by him, even now.
My eyes flutter shut as I sink further into his warmth and the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. Smoke and sandalwood envelop me, as does another scent underlying both, something dark and pleasantly rich and unmistakably him. Something familiar too, achingly so, that makes my breath hitch over the sudden and unexpected swell of fondness spreading across my chest.
My shoulders sag, my head tilts back, and the tension knotted around my throat loosens. His chest rises and falls against my own breathing, sometimes aligning so we press together fully on an inhale, and I slowly realize I don't think I've never felt this relaxed in anyone's arms before.
That is, until I also realize he definitely felt every part of my reaction—right down to the slightest bit of movement—and I inwardly cringe.
Thankfully, at least, he doesn't care enough to comment about any of it. I cringe a little further, hoping that small mercy extends to anything he witnessed while he stood in the doorway.
Or noticed before he opened the door.
My back stiffens again as I try not to think about just how far he can hear across the Warehouse… I bite my lip to suppress a groan.
“How long were you standing there anyway?"
"Long enough."
A weak chuckle escapes me. “Well, that's not embarrassing…”
“'Cause there's nothing to be embarrassed about,” he states, his words delivered so casually and matter-of-fact that there's no room to doubt his belief in them. “Especially not with the view you provide,” he adds, his voice dipping into a low rumble.
I chuckle again despite my unease—and my surprise. A smile tugs at the corner of my mouth. “Glad to know I add a little brightness to your morning too, sunshine.”
His scoff ruffles my hair and I swear I can almost feel his eyeroll. My smile widens.
I lean against him even further, and his arms tighten around me in response. Comfortable silence blankets us, as it often does, and I try to relax into it, into him, closing my eyes once more as my fingers trace idle paths over my neck. The gentle downpour continues outside, steady in its intensity with soft, irregular tings and the occasional roll of thunder.
“Guess the rain ruined your rooftop solitude this morning,” I murmur absently.
"I wouldn't call it ruined."
I hum in acknowledgment and my attention slowly returns to the storm. The rain falls lighter now than it did earlier, when I made the decision—because of Nate's unusually strong encouragement, even for him—to spend the night at the Warehouse rather than drive back into town. Something about my car having 'questionable traction, even under ideal circumstances' and 'certainly a lot of spirit, if not much else,' to which I countered that he and everyone else needed to start having some faith in the most reliable, tenacious, and clearly valuable member of our team.
I mean, a muddy road is nothing. That car has already survived the jerks, stops, and stalled clutches of a teenager with a learner's permit, four years of designated driving for sloppy, belligerent classmates, overnight parking on some of Vancouver's shittiest streets, a hockey riot, Tina spilling a full milkshake across the dash, Adam crashing into it from multiple angles, Mason doing his damnedest to destroy the suspension from the backseat, aggressive karaoke in the front seat with Felix, a standoff with a fucking moose, and that's not even half of what I can remember.
And even after all of that, it continues to rumble along, coasting like it has a full tank when the fuel gauge dips into the red, rattling change loose from its crevices whenever I want a coffee, providing occasional shelter to the neighborhood family of raccoons.
I just think it deserves a little more respect is all. But I know they'll all come around eventually.
Even if I have to make them.
I grin—though it falters somewhat as my fingertips brush over the scar on my neck.
It… feels worse than it looks, in more than one way. Which is a fucking shame, if not completely fitting, because of course that asshole didn't even have the decency to leave me with a badass scar. All this one does is pull uncomfortably if I turn my head too far, but… it doesn't bother me anymore, not really.
My fingers stop directly above the pulse throbbing beneath those gnarled ridges and dips.
It doesn't matter.
Frowning, I continue to stroke my neck, more intently than I had before. And maybe that's why, or maybe it's the nightmare still wrapped fresh around my mind, or the fact it rained that night too, but the memory of Murphy's bite suddenly slams into me as hard as his mouth did.
He chewed a little.
When I fumbled for my throat, my fingers slid across torn flesh into muscle. The blood burned my hand as it poured out. Slick. Hot. A stream of wet fire rushing over my fingers and down my arm to drip from my elbow, down the middle of my chest, my stomach, sinking heat into my underwear and the cold, sweat-soaked gown plastered to my skin.
It burned sickeningly hot, but not as much as Murphy's tongue did, when he dragged it up the length of my neck and pushed it into me.
I startle hard when my hand is suddenly snatched from my neck.
“You always this tense when it rains?”
“I'm not tense,” I say unthinkingly, then cringe at my obvious lie.
Mason scoffs and smirks so hard I can feel it through my skull.
I let out the breath I hadn't realized I was holding. “I'm just, uh… stiff with appreciation.”
His smirk widens. “What a coincidence—”
“—So am I,” I say at the same time as him, then roll my eyes. He laughs, his body shaking against my own, and I can't help but smile too. “Yeah, yeah, I know.”
“I'm sure you do, sweetheart,” he says, pressing a few lingering kisses to the spot I was just touching. He squeezes me tighter for a moment, then folds our arms back around me, his hand tucked over my own.
I take a deep breath and try to relax once more.
“…I actually really like storms,” I say a moment later, in an attempt to keep my mind from wandering again.
“So do I.” Silence briefly falls over us again, until he adds, “The air always smells cleaner when it rains. Sharper, in a good way. And there's so much noise all at once, it all kind of… blends together and almost fades away. Makes everything else fade away too.”
My eyes fall shut again as I enjoy the rumble of his words against my back. “Makes everybody flee inside as well.”
He snorts. “That's always a nice bonus for anything.”
I hum in response. Then he surprises me by speaking further.
“…I don't like being out in it much either.”
“Because it's cold?”
“Freezing, yeah. But more because it stings.” His fingers twitch slightly against the top of mine. “Feels like being stabbed over and over again by millions of tiny needles.”
I hesitate for a moment, briefly pressing my lips together, then I slide my fingers upwards to lace partway through his. Mason stills behind me, and I don't need to turn around to know he's pinning me with a gaze.
Then his fingers curl between mine in response.
A pleasant ache twists in my chest, and I give a small nod toward the window. “…Does it feel that way even in something gentle, like this?”
“If I stand out in it long enough, yeah.”
I huff softly. “Guess showering can't be much fun for you then.”
He chuckles deeply, squeezing me in a decidedly more suggestive manner as he presses his hips forward. “You're always welcome to join me and make it better.”
I open my mouth to reply, but quickly forget what I meant to say as I actually think about his proposal. More specifically, as I think about sliding against his wet and soapy skin. And his hands gliding across mine. And, of course, the fact that he's more than strong enough to hold me up against the wall…
My breath hitches as I bite my lower lip—and Mason descends, grinning, to hook his chin on my shoulder.
“You want me to tuck you in, sweetheart?” he asks, his lips brushing against my ear and sending a pleasant shiver down my body.
“Why do I get the feeling the way you'd tuck me in is identical to the way you toss me down for a fuck?”
He chuckles. “Because they are the same. You just aren't naked right now.”
“That's it?” I turn to face him, my brow raised and a growing smirk on my lips. “Not even gonna offer me a little tenderness and care?”
“Nope,” he replies simply—then scoops me up over his shoulder like he's done so many times in the past.
For a moment, my mind jumps back to when he first carried me like this, over that tree so long ago, but the thought disappears when he unceremoniously dumps me onto the mattress.
I huff and roll over into a somewhat more dignified position. “Thanks.”
“You can thank me when I'm done.” Amusement and desire play across his darkened features.
“Yeah? What else do you need to do?”
“You, obviously.”
I laugh, but the thought is rather tempting right now. Far more so than when he first showed up…
“May I join you?” he asks, his voice dipping into a husky rumble. There's a sharp gleam in his eyes and a hungry grin on his lips.
An answering one pulls at my own lips. “You know the rule.”
His grin widens. “It's the only one I actually like,” he growls before practically tearing his shirt off.
No street clothes in my bed, I told him once, the first time he tried to flop onto my duvet in jeans. Only house clothes and underwear are allowed—or nudity.
And he wastes no time getting to that state.
I scoot over to make room for him, though he still manages to sprawl out practically on top of me as he flops into the bed. He stretches out with exaggerated laziness before folding his arms behind his head and fixing me with a smirk. It's obvious he's temping me to look at him.
And, of course, I do.
The dim light coming in through the window softens the muscled planes of his body. I let my gaze roam over the long and familiar lines of his form, biting my lip as I take in the contours of his bare shoulders and chest, the ridges of his abs, and the trail of dark hair leading down his stomach to the very apparent arousal on full display.
“Look as much as you want, sweetheart,” he purrs, letting his thigh fall atop my own as he spreads his legs even wider.
Chuckling softly, I let my eyes linger there for a moment before I glance back to his face, where it's clearly evident he's been enjoying the attention. I roll onto my side just as lazily and prop my head up on one arm. Then I reach over to skim my other hand down his torso, keeping my palm flat and close enough to his skin to feel his warmth, but not close enough to actually touch him.
He watches my movement intently, breathing in through his teeth as my hand moves lower and lower. When I reach his cock, I curl my hand around the base as though I'm about to grasp him, my fingers circling closer and closer as I move my hand up his length—but right as I'm about to make contact, I keep moving, closing my hand into a fist after it passes by the tip entirely.
His hips roll forward to follow, and I grin as he lets out a frustrated growl.
“But don't touch?” I ask, giving him a wink.
Mason scoffs, but the broad smile on his face says the teasing pleased him more than anything else. He licks his upper lip and scoots closer to me, until we're pressed together, his side against my front, and his face close to mine on the pillow below.
“You can touch as much as you want,” he replies, gazing up at me through half-lidded eyes and long dark lashes. He begins to slowly rub his leg against mine. “And I know you want to.”
His words rumble over me, low, invitingly, and very accurately. I inhale slightly as he nudges his knee against my legs, asking me to part them—then more sharply as I oblige and he slides his thigh between my own, although not quite as high up as I would like.
Heat spools low in my belly as I rock my hips forward slightly, leaning into his warmth. My gaze travels up our bodies. Our bare legs tangled together. The sliver of my stomach brushing against his skin where my shirt is pulled up. The rise and fall of his chest, just waiting for me to reach over and touch him for real this time.
But a question surfaces in my mind before I do. A concern.
Something I've wondered about for a long while now, but has been in my thoughts with more frequency lately.
Because he's been touching me more lately, outside of the bedroom.
A lot.
Pressing his shoulder against mine when we stand by each other for a group meeting. Splaying his hand across my back while we lean over to examine something. Reaching over to brush strands of hair from my face after I blow them away in annoyance.
And a multitude of other tiny ways to try and fluster me because words alone rarely cut it anymore.
I've played back with my own teasing touches, of course, but…
It's a lot of effort on his part just to get a reaction out of me. A lot of painful effort too, for someone so hypersensitive that even a gentle rainfall against his skin could cause agony.
Much less what it must feel like for him when he's exposed like this and touched so directly.
So intimately.
I glance back up to catch his gaze, only to find him already watching me with those pretty grey eyes.
“…Doesn't it hurt you, though?” I ask quietly, before I can stop myself. “Being touched when your senses are so heightened?”
All trace of amusement and desire drops from his face instantly. He frowns and looks away.
I glance away as well, regret lurching in my stomach to an almost sickening degree. My fingers curl around the hem of my shirt and begin twisting the fabric.
Of course I had to fucking ask. Of course.
I know this… arrangement between Mason and myself is superficial and meaningless, even if the more stupidly curious part of me sometimes forgets. I've always appreciated his honesty about that, how upfront he's been from the very start about not wanting to know me or share himself. After how hard Bobby almost fucked me over… it's a relief to be around someone so direct about his intent.
Someone who isn't going to pretend to care about me in order to get what he actually wants.
Mason would never do that. He's a good guy. We have a good thing. And I don't want to fuck things up between us just because I'm terminally fucking nosy.
I shouldn't have pried. And definitely not about something like that.
I take a low, steadying breath and ready an apology on my lips, but his voice cuts through the silence first.
“Yes.”
My eyes snap to his face, only to find him already staring at me again. There's a strange, piercing intensity in those grey depths now, something I've never seen there before.
“It does, most of the time,” he continues, holding my gaze, his brow furrowing and his jaw tightening slightly as he pauses for a moment. “…But not with you.”
My breath snags over his words and suddenly it's my turn to look away and frown.
I want to dismiss it as just… more innuendo. An obvious invitation to slip out of my shirt and roll on top of him. And I'm sure he meant it like that, and I'm sure he wants that too, I know, but…
There's an edge to his tone. A heaviness to his words.
Like the calm and undeniable weight of a storm before it breaks.
My stomach does an uneasy flip, and I don't know if it's because I'm scared of whatever it means—or because I'm excited.
I really don't know what to say in response, either.
…So I don't say anything.
I just…
Thunder rumbles somewhere far away from us as I reach over and brush my fingers across Mason's stomach.
His eyes shut and he inhales sharply through his teeth as I slowly flatten my hand and begin caressing him there. His abs dip and roll with my movement, and his hips join the motion when I start to tease my fingers further down. I stay there, just long enough to give him some hope, my fingers inching closer and ever closer, until I abruptly change direction to the sound of another frustrated groan.
Chuckling quietly, I keep my touch soft as I follow the path of dark hair up his torso. My fingers ruffle it lightly along the way, briefly detouring out across his freckled skin to graze his nipples. He moans quietly in response, and chills prickle across his flesh. His chest rises and falls as he takes a deep breath, and I continue upward, passing the cords of leather looped around his neck, the shard of quartz catching the faint light, until my fingers glide into the hollow at the base of his throat.
Slowly, I draw a single finger up the long column of his neck. His head falls back to allow it, his chin rising in the air, his body arching too, as my fingertip drags up through his heavy stubble and briefly catches on the edge of his jaw before it flicks free. His tongue darts across his lips, but I don't give him time to recover before my hand immediately veers in to cup his cheek, gliding slowly again until he's nestled fully in my palm. I roll my thumb across his soft, slickened lips as his hand slides up my side.
Desire churns in his eyes as he stares into mine. Desire and that same strange intensity.
My breath snags again and I bite my own lip, dragging my thumb to the edge of his, until it catches and flicks free.
Then I kiss him.
I keep it as soft as my touch, even as his lips press eagerly against mine, even as it deepens until we moan into each other. Our tongues slide together, hot and wet, and I lean into him, pulling my hand away from my head to find the arm he still has folded behind his. Our fingers immediately lace together when our hands meet, and he curls his other arm around my back to pull me against him. Our kiss becomes more urgent as we move together, his thigh sliding further up between mine as a familiar heat begins to build and throb between my legs.
We're forced to break for air eventually, our foreheads pressing together as we pant against each other. I swipe my thumb across his cheek and give him a brief kiss.
Mason breathes out a moan and kisses me back. “It always feels good when you're touching me,” he murmurs against my lips, his voice thick and hoarse.
A smirk twitches at the corner of my mouth, and I move as though I'm about to start kissing him in earnest again—but instead I only graze my lips against his before I pull away. He follows again, and then breathes out a chuckle against my mouth as he reaches down to smack my ass.
A sharp laugh bursts from me and I offer him a sly smile. “Even when I'm teasing you?”
“Especially when you're teasing me,” he replies, a smile of his own gleaming in his eyes.
He kisses me briefly, then moves his mouth to my neck, where he presses wet kisses against my skin before grazing his teeth over that spot he knows I like. Chills of pleasure ripple across my body, and I inhale sharply as his thigh starts to glide higher between mine, closer and tantalizingly closer to the ache between my legs. I roll my hips forward to meet him—but just as we're about to make contact, just as I can feel the heat and the barest brush of him through my underwear, he pulls away entirely.
And suddenly it's my turn to groan.
“Makes it all the sweeter when I get to pay you back for it,” he whispers against my ear, grinning.
I smile too, even as I huff a little in response and roll my eyes. Then I reach down to grab his cock, teasing my fingers along his length.
“Guess this means I'll just have to put my hands on you even more often.”
“As much as you want, sweetheart,” he groans, his eyes shuttering closed as he grabs my ass and squeezes. “As often as you want.”
We kiss again, and his hand moves up to cup my breast, his thumb briefly circling my nipple through the fabric before he slides his touch to my stomach, to the bare flesh exposed at the bottom of my shirt. He strokes my skin there, breaking away from our kiss to look into my eyes as he nudges the fabric up with his thumb.
“And I'm more than willing to do the same for you,” he states simply, staring at me with such a heavy intensity that it feels like I might actually fall into his gaze.
His words are innuendo. A silent ask for permission. A promise of pleasure.
And something more.
Again, my breath hitches and my stomach does a tiny flip. Again, I'm not sure what to say in response.
…But, whatever he's offering, I think I want to find out.
I think maybe I want it too.
So I kiss him again while he slides his hand under my shirt.
His thigh surges up fully against me, dragging sweet pressure against the heat between my legs. I moan into him, tightening, squeezing his leg between mine as I grind against him. We move together like that, hands still clasped tightly, while he kneads my breast and I stroke him the best I can from what our position allows.
But it's not enough—and soon we're forced to briefly disentangle so we can reach each other better.
He rolls onto his side to face me, and I hook my leg over him, giving him ample access to cup me through my underwear. His fingers stroke and tease me through the damp fabric before he slips his hand inside to touch me more directly. I gasp as he does, and he grins, giving me a low growl of appreciation when he feels the full extent of how wet I already am.
He strokes his fingers along the slickened length of me before drawing upward to circle my clit. I bite my lip and hiss as hot pleasure arcs through me, but I can't contain the moan that soon breaks free, or the way my hips start to rock against his touch. I capture his lips in another kiss as I drown in the sensation, and I do my best to concentrate on him as well.
My hand glides along the hot and solid length of his cock, rolling his foreskin along his shaft as my thumb swipes over the sticky wetness at his tip. He groans against my lips and thrusts into my grasp. Then he slides his fingers into me, not giving me any time to recover before he withdraws and plunges back in, drawing his strokes in long lengths that hit my clit with each pass and tear sharp, guttural cries from my throat.
Pleasure coils inside me as our foreheads press together. We exchange moans and gasping breaths, the only noise in the room aside from the rain and the slick sound of his fingers fucking into my cunt.
But even that stops too soon, as Mason withdraws from me with a departing flick that makes me twitch and groan.
He slides his fingers into his mouth as he holds my gaze, sucking on them for a moment before pulling them out with a deliberate pop.
Then he wraps his hand around the crotch of my underwear and yanks them down my thighs.
I barely have time to kick myself free of them before he rolls me into his lap between his legs. My shirt soon follows, as he sits up to tear it off me and toss it somewhere into the darkness. I shift my legs to curl around behind him and he's already kissing me again, pulling me against him. I taste myself on his tongue as it rolls against mine, as we roll against each other, his hands clutching my hips and my fingers curling into his hair and the sweet, aching grind of his shaft rubbing against my cunt between us.
But it's not enough.
I lift my hips up and his hand is already wrapped around the base of his cock, steadying it for me. Holding his gaze, I slide myself against the tip a few times, watching the anticipation build in his expression.
Then I sink down onto him.
We both groan loudly. And he groans even louder as I wiggle my hips back and forth to get as much of him inside of me as possible.
Grinning briefly, I wrap my arms around him as we begin to move again.
Mason swipes my hair away from my neck and buries his face there, kissing greedily while his hands curl around my ass and squeeze. Heat begins to build between us, slowly and deeply, as we rock together. Sweat prickles across our skin where we touch, a few beads trickling down between the press and roll of our stomachs. I push my face into the soft curtain of his hair and breathe, inhaling his scent, until his teeth graze that spot on my neck and tear a gasp from my throat.
My head falls back and my hand follows.
I fumble behind myself to brace my weight on my arm, leaning away from him slightly until I find that sweet angle where pleasure surges and drags in a loop with every thrust. My eyes fall shut, breathy moans escaping me as I drive myself against him and begin rubbing my clit with slickened fingers. He curls his hands around my hips in encouragement, snarling his own urgent groans while he rolls his hips in time with mine.
My hair sways against my back, and I lose myself in a haze of sensation, in our moans, in how good he feels, how much he fills me, the heat of him between my legs, the aching throb, the spiraling build of pleasure against every right spot—
A breathy, desperate, needy growl cuts through all of it, something I've never heard before.
Something I briefly mistake for my own.
“Oh, fuck, sweetheart.”
My eyes snap open to see Mason staring at me intently with dark eyes, dark waves of hair framing his face.
And his fangs fully bared.
My heart catches for a moment—and his eyes widen a little in surprise.
Then all I feel is an electric and overwhelming thrill surge through my entire body.
His eyes widen even further.
Even so, our rhythm barely stutters. I fall into it again, my eyes shutting as my head falls back too.
Another growl escapes him, softer this time, but still just as breathlessly needy. Then his hands slide up my back as he pulls me closer.
“C'mere.”
Mason's arm cradles my lower back as he holds me tightly against him. His hand curls behind my neck and my breasts crush against his chest hair as we move. He shifts us and his hips slightly, until everything aligns once more to hit all the right spots. I sigh deeply as he does, moaning and clutching him hard while we rock back and forth towards the edge.
His movements become more intense and directed to guide us there. His fingers tangle in my hair and he buries his face into my neck, kissing along my throat as our breathing become more urgent. I tilt my head and angle myself into his lips and his tongue and his growling moans.
And into the tips of his fangs that graze across my skin and jolt me straight over—
A familiar tension coils in my throat and belly.
“Fuck, Mason—”
And bursts into pleasure.
I cry out and arch into it, into him, clenching tightly as it pulses through me in waves. With a few harder thrusts, he shudders against me quickly after, his own orgasm taking him with a loud groan. He presses his face into my neck and breathes heavily, so much that I almost miss the quiet and ragged whisper that escapes his lips.
“Alex…”
I don't know why, but… even in the haze of climax, something about the way he says my name catches in my throat and makes my chest ache.
My brow furrows and I hug him tighter, pressing my own kisses into his neck.
We stay wrapped in the afterglow for a long moment, our heartbeats thundering together, both of us unmoving except for the rise and fall of our chests and the late twitches of pleasure. A pleasant buzz fills my body, making my limbs tremble slightly. I relax into it, my eyes slowly falling shut, until he shifts to press his forehead against mine.
He stares at me for a long moment, a lazy smile gracing his lips and nothing but contentment in those beautiful grey eyes.
Then he smirks.
“If I knew you'd like the fangs so much, sweetheart, I would've brought them out a lot sooner.”
Heat immediately flushes across my cheeks. His smirk widens, revealing the smallest hint of pointed canines.
Despite my blush, I roll my eyes and try to scoff, but a smile tugs at my lips and a laugh comes out instead. He grins too, but his eyes soon flutter shut, and it's only when a breathy little groan escapes him as well do I remember that he's actually still inside of me.
So, of course, I clench around his cock slightly for effect.
He inhales sharply, but it quickly drags into a chuckle and a broad smile. His eyes shine brightly as he moves in to bite my neck, growling as he teases his teeth against my skin. Chills prickle across my flesh and a pleasant shiver ripples down my spine. I laugh again, then hook my chin over his shoulder, smiling as I nestle against him.
My eyes fall shut, and a quiet swell of happiness rolls through me as I savor the moment. The rain falling outside, the cool night air brushing over us, the feel of him clutching me tighter as he sighs and presses a long kiss to my neck.
I sigh too, heavy with comfort and contentment, reluctant to move. Even to brush away the strand of hair tickling the side of my face from the breeze.
I absently blow at it, knowing it won't do much.
Mason reaches up to tuck it behind my ear.

Can’t Help Falling in Love With You (Scent)
Tumblr media
Title: Can’t Help Falling in Love
Summary: Sight | Scent | Sound | Touch | Taste
Pairing: Henry x First Person Reader
Word Count: 337
A/N: I am attempting the senses challenge that @viking-raider just completed not too long ago. Find her work here! I’m doing it a little differently, each snippet will add a new filter to the same scene instead of lengthening it, if that makes sense. I live for comments, let me know your favorite part!
~~~~~~~~ Scent ~~~~~~~~
The aroma of summer was all around us. I could smell the heat of the sun as it shone down gently. Tiny droplets from the lake blew in with the breeze, someone had freshly mown the grass underneath us, and somewhere nearby was a large coven of honeysuckle, ripe and full of blossoms. The old quilt we lay on had a musty smell from being packed in a cedar box for too long, but I didn’t mind.
I flipped the pages of the book in my hand, pressing my nose into the paper. No amount of technology could ever replace that smell. That smell transported me back to a better time, a time when life was simpler and choices were easier. A time when the only cares I had were piles of homework and which Lipsmackers to choose. It transported me far away, to lands of monsters and magic, of love, and life... and loss.
And Henry? He smelled like rain. Like pine needles after they’ve been trampled a bit. I can still detect a soft woody note from his cologne tangled in his chest hair that wasn’t washed off by the lake water; it’s the sweet kind that lingers in your sinuses long after he’s left the room. The smell reminds me of the hoodie that he pretends to forget at my place when he leaves, knowing I’ll wear it in his absence.
I breathe deep as I stare at him, his musk washing over me as he raises his arm to turn the page of his book. I catch the unique note of his skin that is just him, and it also reminds me of another time not so long ago, and another smell. The smell of sweat, of passion, of his essence and mine coming together to create their own unique perfume. A scent so strong it permeates the room, saturates the sheets, leaves me aching for him when he’s not there.
He turns his head to look at me, grinning when he catches me staring. I drop my head down to place a kiss on his lips, the scent of watermelon still on his tongue. I smile softly against his lips before turning back to my book, and the nostalgia of its pages.
7, 10, and 19 for are we satellites?
answering questions from this fic writing meme!
hi aspen!! thank you for the ask :')) for are we satellites?:
7: Were there any ideas you had for [AWS] that you couldn’t make work? What were they?
yeah, actually! haha. initially i had this idea of s/t going all the way to the coast - starting somewhere in south washington/oregon around their yellowstone floating fun
i realized 1. that i wasn't going to have enough time to write that, lol. i was AT DEADLINE with our RBB team's posting
2. that it wasn't necessary. i established the sense of water with the glacial pool and i wasn't sure that a drawn out exploration of the coast was necessary for the emotional arc of s/t - especially as i made the decision to omit a lot of real comic world-ness and focus on the vibes instead. i would have had to pad with some real world things, and that's mmm.
3. i actually left a remnant of this intent still in the story w this bit, thinking it would be fun if someone picked up on it. alas, no one did but its fine:
“What do you think?” Steve asks him, sun-browned and loose, at the next day’s junction “Still wanna see the ocean?”
And Tony cuts a glance across the front seat, the lived-in car MacGyver’d to suit their predilections – heating blankets like curtains against their battle-brains, bulletproof and complete with a built in ice chest. He catches Steve’s eyes, soft at the edges and laser focused. Layers and layers of blue between them today, like a petrified pinecone Tony is hiding in his hoodie to bring back from summer vacation.
“No,” he says slowly, “I think I’m good.”
i also wanted to expand on the "Spoken and agreed, they head North. They’re cutting down now, leaving things behind like stray seeds that have no place on their native ground." bit and interweave some outside world filtering in, but again, strapped for time and kinda saw it as superfluous. this iiiis one area i could maybe see myself returning to with this fic, but maybe not. it stands good on its own.
10: Who has been your favourite character to write about in [AWS]? What do they bring to the fic?
gosh, i mean. this tony means so much to me! i really, really care about his baby bird bones and red giant heart. i think his perspective is what colors the whole of the story, obvs since it is his, but the way he is viewing the world with wonder after being in a coma - rediscovering the trees, the way the sunlight hits things, music, the sounds of the words, is so very integral. his appreciation and also his aches, "He’s been wondering if it’s the threat of rain, or just the compromised chemical structure he carries inside him already. Wood rot left over from winter," mean that as he empathizes with the world around us in a visceral, weary way, we do too. this story wouldn't exist without him uniquely like this.
(steve in this story also wouldn't exist without tony like this. tony is the catalyst for their narrative, despite steve being the acting force. and steve knows this. )
tony stark sees poetry in persevering. nature is such a good example of that, but so are humans. to step into AWS!tony's perspective, is to acknowledge beauty, our part in the world, the lingering scars that go deep into our mantels and the way that the smallest, accumulated moments of trying end up meaning the most:
"And really, it’s a soft sort of becoming. Evolution is in the quiet strands of the basest things, filaments and microns. Tony takes one step forward into Steve’s waiting arms and it’s an easy rewrite."
he's brave, he's scared, he's hurt, he's healing, he loves so, so hard and long and he hopes, at the end of all things, he hopes.
i also really love the kid that gives tony a tiny toy horse, and the fae at the gas stop in the desert, haha. they add comic sincerity and weirdness, imho
19: 15 words to describe the aesthetic of [AWS].
spring
wander
bruise
infinitesimal
pine-needles
glacial-blue
murmur
star-glass
fervent
watercolor
quickfire
sequester
horizon
wonder
requited
this was rly hard i have no notion if these actually describe the aesthetic? asknbdkjbn
Mulching the Vegetable Garden
Mulching is an essential garden technique when growing vegetables. Though it’s an extra step, it will reduce the time spent watering, weeding, fertilizing and controlling pests. Covering your soil with mulch also builds the soil, encouraging microbial life which makes for healthier plants and better harvests. I follow the advice of garden writer, Barbara Pleasant.
The best vegetable garden mulches are those that your property produces itself, such as grass clippings, leaves and compost made by combining kitchen and garden wastes. Grass clippings are particularly useful because they contain abundant nitrogen and other nutrients, which feed both soil life and plants.
The mulches I use vary in my 52-week vegetable garden. Some of my choices are grass clippings, shredded leaves, pine needles and wood shavings. Be sure to keep any mulch an inch or so away from plant stems to prevent rot. (Looks like I need to adjust in corn photo above).
My favorite combination is grass clippings from our small lawn topped with pine needles or shredded leaves. A friend brings me the shavings from her woodworking, absent any walnut and I gather clean pine needles up the street.
Pine needles work well for me around strawberry plants. The fruit is lifted above the soil and sow bugs seem less interested in living in the pine needles.
In the fall, another friend lets me rake up her liquidamber leaves which I store in trash cans. I add them to my compost bin and shred to use as mulch.
In my garden, mulching is most important late spring through the fall when supplemental water needs are higher. That’s when a 3-4 inch layer of mulch does the job of retaining soil moisture. A soaker hose laced through my corn before placing the mulch substantially reduces irrigation needs and I have better yields. In the winter garden a lighter mulch—sometimes just some grass clippings and pine needles—allows winter rains to easily reach plant roots.
Here are more short reads on mulching. I learned new information in each one. You’ll also find links to other posts I’ve done on mulching in Related Posts below.
Blue Button-Down
Arthur Morgan x Reader | Imagine #4
Summary: You get soaked during a rainstorm while on an overnight trip with Arthur, and now you're freezing.
Category: Fluff, Sexual Tension.
A/N: I'm honestly having too much fun writing these lil' fluffy/sexual tension Arthur pieces. 😭 also, I apologize in advance about not being able to put add a 'keep reading' cut. It's been almost a year or so since I've been on Tumblr to actually write as much as I have the past week. I'm not sure how Tumblr mobile works anymore. So, if anyone would know how to put this under a cut, please let me know. 🤷‍♀️
××××
Tumblr media
"I said, I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
I wanna sleep on the hard ground
In the comfort of your arms
On a pillow of blue bonnets
In a blanket made of stars
Oh, it sounds good to me."
××××
If there was ever a time for New Hanover to suffer a torrential downpour, it was always whenever you and Arthur went on trips where it was necessary to stay overnight. There had been some O'Driscolls spotted in the Valetine saloon. So, immediately, Dutch sent the two of you out to tail the gang back to their hideout to take them all out.
You were halfway to Strawberry when the bottom of the sky seemed to just give out, pummeling the two of you and the surrounding area with rain. It was already close to dusk, so Arthur decided that you needed to stop and set up a campsite as fast as you could to get you and the horses of the rain.
You agreed with him as you slid yourself off of Jasper, leading him over to a slightly more wooded area to provide the stallion with some form of cover from the weather onslaught. Your clothes were already halfway soaked with water, and you could feel your body temperature dropping the more the cold rain fell on you.
"Think ya can help me get this tent up?" Arthur asked as he untied a canvas from the back of Athena's saddle.
"Yeah, we gotta be quick. Looks like it's set in for the night." You walked over to him, helping him unload the rest of the supplies from his saddle.
He nodded. "Seems that way. Them O'Driscolls will have'ta wait 'til mornin'."
The two of you were utterly drenched by the time you finally got the tent set up. Arthur seemed to be unbothered by it, but then again, he had been subject to far more harsh weather than this. You, on the other hand, were completely chilled to the bone. When you were finally able to get inside of the tent, it was a relief to finally have yourself sheltered from the freezing rain, but you were still cold, regardless. It was going to take more than just shelter to warm you back up. You dropped yourself to the ground, shivering as you pulled off your trail coat, tossing it to the side. It was a bit of a relief, but not by much, the majority of the rest of your clothes were still soaked through to the skin.
"Goddamn," Arthur hissed as climbed into the tent after you. "I tried'ta get the horses s'much cover as I could. It's a damn mess out there."
Tumblr media
He lowered himself onto his bedroll near you as he pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, lighting one up. It was quiet, all except for the sound of the rain as it poured on top of the tent, beating the material to hell, gallon by gallon. You did what you could to wring the water out of your hair before bringing your knees up to your chest, wrapping your arms around them as your shivering began to intensify when the cool air from the outside hit your drenched clothing.
Arthur had took notice of it immediately, turning his attention towards you. "Ya alright, girl?"
You shook your head. "Other than freezing to death, I'm fine."
"Ya bring any extra clothes?" He stuck the cigarette between his lips, taking a drag.
You gave him a pleading look as you shook your head, figuring he'd berate you for not bringing any extra. But he didn't. He never did, and you knew better than that. Arthur was always different with you than the others. He'd berate anyone else in a second with his quick wit and a smart mouth, but with you, that wasn't so. If he ever had a difference of opinion with you, or needed you to know better about a situation, he'd always give you that familiar stern look of his, followed by the dangerous way his tone sounded when he said, "Girl".
Quite frankly, sometimes you'd antagonize him just to illicit that response out of him. He was even more desirable than usual when he had a streak of anger in him.
He shook his head amusingly at you as he reached over to dig through his saddlebag. "I gotta lot to teach ya about bein' prepared, huh?"
A bashful expression appeared on your face as you tucked a strand of hair behind your ear. "I guess ya do Mr. Morgan."
He finally leaned back over to you holding a worn, blue button down shirt. It was the one that you had seen him wearing so many times before, and your heart skipped a beat as you saw him offering it up to you now.
"Oh, Arthur. You'll have nothin' to change into if I-"
He cut you off with his free hand as he held the shirt out to you with his other, the cigarette still hanging from between his lips. "It ain't up for debate, (Y/N). You'll catch ya damn death out here if ya keep that on."
You took the shirt gently from his hands, clutching it tightly. "Thank you, Arthur."
He smiled, "Ya know damn well I ain't gonna let you freeze. Ya need me to step out?"
"No." You shook your head, "There ain't no need to for all that."
Truth be told, you'd have been more content if he was taking these soaked clothes off of your body for you.
"A'ight then." He took one last drag off the cigarette before throwing the butt of it outside of the opening flap of the tent.
But, him being the gentleman that he was, he still turned his head away from you. You sighed lightly, smiling to yourself as you began to unbutton your own shirt. Sometimes he was too much of a gentleman, but that'd have to wait, The focus right now was getting these clothes. Pulling the saturated clothes off of your body was a torture all on it's on. The wet material of both your pants and shirt still tried to cling to your body, making you hiss everytime a freezing piece of the cloth touched your skin.
When you finally got the shirt and pants off, you threw them across the tent, wanting them as far away from you as possible. You pulled Arthur's large shirt over your shoulders. It was an indescribable feeling, not only for the warmth that it held, but the fact that it was his shirt. It smelled like him; a mix of cigarettes, campfires and pine needles. He was considerably bigger than you, so the shirt was very loose fitting and comfortable. It was long enough to where it hung just a little past your thighs. You were still cold, but you felt much better than you had before.
When you finished, you lowered yourself back down onto your bedroll. Arthur peeked around to check if you were decent before he shifted himself back to the front of the tent. The rain had calmed down from what it was a few moments ago, but that wasn't saying a whole lot since it was still pouring down rather heavily.
"Ya know I'm gonna feel bad about takin' ya shirt. I owe ya one," you admitted.
"Nah," he said. "Long as your warm, that s'all that matters."
The way he cared for you almost made your heart hurt sometimes, especially when you so desperately longed to care for him, and to be with him in more than just this way.
You gave him a nod and a thankful smile as your lowered yourself to lay down on your bedroll. You and him listened quietly to the rain for a while, thinking over your own things, and thinking about how this whole thing with the O'Driscolls would play out tomorrow. But you couldn't keep your mind on much else, not even on Arthur, and that man consumed a good portion of all your thoughts. You were still bitterly cold, and the sharpness of the air outside didn't help. At all. You had began shivering again as you curled yourself up into a fetal-like position, trying to get some more warmth going, but it wasn't much use.
"Ya still cold?" Arthur cocked an eyebrow at you.
"Very. This is why I don't meddle with the cold." You could see small clouds of fog each time you spoke.
"I can't start a fire with it rainin'," Arthur breathed, looking from you to his saddlebag.
He finally stood up and quickly began to unbutton his own shirt, dropping it to the ground before he kicked his boots off. Next, he worked on his gunbelt, letting it drop the the ground with a THUD as he went for the button on his pants after that. Even as cold as you were, seeing him literally strip down in front of you like this was obviously enough to take your mind off of it for the moment. You lifted your head slightly as you watched him standing there in nothing put a pair of underwear. The man seemed to be all muscle, there was almost no part of his body that didn't look like some kinda statue you'd see in a big city, or one of them old places like Greece.
He ended up pulling out a pair of dry pants from his saddlebag and put them on. When he got the fresh pants on, he walked back over to his bedroll, yanking his blanket off of it before stepping over to you, quickly gesturing to you with his head.
"Scoot," he said bluntly.
A certain look of surprise came over your face as you leaned up, forcing your tensed muscles to move as you made room for the hulking man to lay himself down beside you. He threw his blanket over you, lowering himself down beside you. He lifted the blanket up just enough to his work his way up under it. You could feel your whole body go even more tense when you felt his body heat and the way he protectively wrapped his arm around you.
You scooted yourself just a little closer to him. You laid your head down near his chest while you brought your hand up, resting it against his broad, firm chest, feeling the tussles of chesthair beneath your fingertips. You could hear the slight hitch of his breath when you touched him, and you weren't completely sure if it was because of how cold your hand was, or if he was just that touch starved. You had a feeling that it might've been both. He didn't seem the slightest bit uncomfortable about it, though.
Overall, it seemed as if it was somewhat of an open secret between the two of you, that, you both knew that each of you had some sort of attraction to the other. But how much and how far either of you were willing to go with that was still up in the air and never discussed. You knew what you wanted from Arthur, and you just hoped that somehow he knew that.
But those were thoughts for a different time. The man literally had you in his arms at this very moment, doing whatever he could to keep your from freezing to death, and that's all you were worried about. You were absolutely grateful. You laid there for the moment in a state of complete bliss. The feeling of his strong arms around you was almost too much to bear, you hadn't experienced anything else in your life that made you feel what you were feeling now.
No one else in your life had ever made you feel the way that Arthur was making you feel in this very moment, and it made your heart ache all the more because of it. You were so close to him that you could hear the slow, steady beating of his heart in his chest. It sounded more lovely than any song you had ever heard before.
"How ya feelin'?" He asked.
The grumbling of his his deep voice vibrating in his chest sending another shockwave down your spine, but, atleast this time it was for a reason that you actually enjoyed.
You rolled your eyes up to him, looking directly into those crystal blue iris' of his. This was the first time you had ever been this close to him, and you couldn't help but be in awe of him. You admired his chiselled features, and how thick his beard was beginning to get. Any other time you'd stop yourself from doing this, but he seemed to be studying your face just as much as you were his.
You finally sighed, reluctantly peeling your eyes away from the handsome cowboy. "I'm a lot better now. Thank ya, Arthur."
"Don't mention it. I ain't gonna let nothin' happen to ya. Ya already know that." You could feel him shrug as he shifted his arm, moving to rest it flat against the small of your back.
You scoffed playfully, "Yeah." You looked up at him once more, "I think I know that better than 'bout anyone."
"That ya do," he chuckled. "Don't think I'd be lettin' anyone else take my best shirt."
You scoffed at him, "This ratty ol' thing, Arthur?" You were only poking fun at him, and he knew that.
"Hey, don't be talkin' shit 'bout mine. It's keepin' ya warm, ain't it?" He chuckled again, shifting his eyes down to you.
"I won't doubt ya, but I think that's more you, ol' man." You smiled innocently back up at him.
"Who you callin' ol' man, girl?" He squinted his eyes at you in mock offense.
"You," you repeated with a coy smile.
"A'ight then, I'll remember to let ya freeze next time. Maybe one'a them grizzly bears will keep ya warm." He cut his eyes to you again, trying to hold back his smile.
You shook your head at him. "Y'know you'd never let anythin' happen to me, Arthur Morgan."
That familiar smile danced across his lips as he gave you a slow nod. "Well, I can't argue with ya on that one. Yer the pain in my ass that I jus' can't live without."
You both laughed as you laid there, arms still around eachother. It was one of the few moments where the two of you could just let your guards down and be yourselves. And getting to spend this time wrapped in his embrace only made it better. You honestly couldn't think of a moment where you had ever been happier. The two of you locked eyes with eachother once more, both of you seemed to be doing the best to stare into the other's soul, wondering who would ever be the one to make the first move.
"So," you spoke, trying to break up the silence that had set in again, "Mind tellin' me what Dutch's obsession with these O'Driscoll men is?"
Arthur sighed, bringing his hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose as he turned his head to look up at the roof of the tent. "Ehh, it's a long story. We've been at war with 'em boys for years. Colm, the leader, killed Dutch's woman years ago. The only woman I think he ever really loved, an' he's been tryin' to kill that slippery bastard ever since."
"Oh. Well, you can't damn 'em for that. I think I'd wanna kill the person that took someone I love. But, then again, I ain't never found a man I could stand for more than a night." You shrugged.
"That right?" Arthur asked curiously.
You looked up at him, biting down on the inside of you lip. "Perhaps I fancied at least one of 'em."
Of course you were referring to Arthur himself.
"What about you. Why ain't you gotta woman?"
Arthur hummed, his chest heaving slightly at the question. "I did, long time ago. Almost got married, but she didn't want no part'a this life, an' this life is all I ever known, so, that was that. I'm a bad man, an' I know that."
You rolled your eyes at what you were hearing him saying. "You're pullin' my leg, right?"
"What?" He cut his eyes to you.
You grunted, propping yourself up on your elbow to look at him head on. "Arthur, you are one the of the best, most kindest men I ever met."
"She didn't see it that way," he gestured his head, still unconvinced.
"Jesus Christ. Just 'cause some woman disapproves of ya ifestyle don't make you a bad man. Do you think I'm a bad person 'cause I live this life with y'all?" You narrowed your eyes at him.
His lips parted in surprise as he shook his head quickly. "No. 'Course I don't think that. Why'd ya say some shit like'at?"
"To prove my point." You smiled mischievously, knowing you had just got one over on him.
His lips stretched into a thin line, stifling a smile. "I swear, gal."
"Ya know I'm right," you said confidently.
He hummed again, "Hah. Careful, darlin'. Wouldn't want ya gettin' too cocky."
"Yeah, yeah," you giggled.
You were finally able to relax once you were fully warm, thanks to Arthur. He still had his arms slung around you, and he seemed to be just as comfortable as you were. The feeling of his bare skin against you was the epitome of heaven.
"Ah shit," Arthur breathed, finally laying his head back down to the bedroll. "If we're gonna get the jump on them O'Driscolls, we better get some rest."
You had already began to get sleepy once you finally got comfortable. So you had no reason to argue with him about that.
"You're right about that."
"Ya want me to get back on my bedroll, or stay here?" He asked, peering up at you with those blue orbs.
"You can stay right here.. I mean, if youd like?" You asked.
He sighed, giving you a non-chalant shrug as he nestled himself down onto the bedroll. "Ah hell, I'm already comfortable where I am."
You tried to hold back the feverish nip of red at your cheeks, but there was no stopping it now. You gave him a nod, and lowered yourself back down beside him.
"Thank you again."
He turned his head in your direction, giving you a look of sincerity. "Ya don't have to thank me, (Y/N). I'd do it again."
You could feel a warmth in your chest as he spoke. His voice was gruff, but was as smooth as silk whenever he spoke. You couldn't help but smile, and you were convinced there wasn't anything you didn't like about this man. You took in a calming breathe and met his eyes again.
"I know you would. You wanna know why?" you asked as you leaned up once more, surprising him as you laid a kiss on the side of his prickly cheek, the hairs tickling your lips. "That's because you're a good man, Arthur Morgan. And you're gonna know that someday."
He looked at you in shock as a small, shy smirk tugged at the side of his lip as he watched you lower yourself back down beside him. You nuzzled your face against his chest, listening to his heartbeat again, which was beating considerably faster this time.
"Goodnight, Arthur," you whispered in a sleepy tone.
"Goodnight, (Y/N)," he answered back softly.
You could have swore you felt him pull you closer into his chest, wrapping his arm around you just a little tighter as you drifted off to sleep.
