It would explain why Ring has the unique ability to sync with people; it’s how he originally used to exist, as life energy drifting in and out of living creatures. It would explain the aging. It would explain why Ring never mentions a parent or creator watching over him during childhood; because he came into this world totally alone. (Baby Ring belonged to no one before he belonged with Baby Drags.)

But Ring’s theoretical past life answers a few more questions. It could explain parts of Ring’s personality, his interests. (His dream of spreading positivity across the land.) It explains why there aren’t ten million Rings floating about, when coins and medals and chests are so relatively common. (Because there’s a key ingredient missing). It actually explains his five special powers. (Because I’m betting Influences have human-related origins. It’s either that, or “live humans being consumed” was part of the “perfect” conditions surrounding Ring’s birth. Which, cringe.) But more than anything, it addresses the sheer power imbalance happening between Ring and Dark Influence right now.

Dark Influence lacks boundaries and spreads itself like a virus, thoughtless and instinctive. Ring’s natural weapon against this thing should be to “infect” it right back. (I would expect some sort of sick light show to dance across Dragaux’s body during battle; yellow flames squaring off against purple.) But it doesn’t work that way. Ring the Person no longer works this way.

If Dark influence is a forest fire, then Ring is a fireplace set behind glass. At their core, these two are both energy. But the modes in which they exist divide them into separate skill sets entirely.

Dark Influence is wildfire of brute strength. It’s got range—in the spatial sense. It can spread to as many secondary hosts as Dragaux directs it to, so long as it’s fed well enough to reach for them. Compared to Ring’s measly one syncing partner, Dark Influence can sink itself into whole regions, can simultaneously feed off of so many people. It doesn’t have outright mind control powers; it’s more subtle than that. But its presence as negativity incarnate naturally works like a magnet to draw out the worst in people. There is nothing it enhances in a person that wasn’t already there, no matter how small the weakness. Coupled with the rush of power it imparts in its vessels, it makes bad decisions feel right. Even to good people. It’s, quite simply, a bad influence. (And then it consumes them.)

But other than that, Dark Influence doesn’t really do much.

Our bud Ring may only be able to light one house at a time, so to speak. But as contained as he is—Ring’s powers are more varied and nuanced, because Ring is more varied and nuanced. He’s always actively (and thoughtfully) applying energy to construct, convert, and amplify. For all its fearsome strength, the only thing Dark Influence can seemingly do on purpose, is feed.

(If Ring was once a being like Dark Influence, then that solves the final mystery of synchronization. If Dark Influence “infects” its host by sinking into the body, then Ring syncs with a partner by “planting” a piece of his essence inside them. This is why Trainee’s energy signature changes to mimic Ring’s; because she now carries a part of him in her beating heart. This is why Ring can freely access her energy; because this makes her a part of him now, too.)

So. Let’s pretend I’m not crazy. Say that all of these little details I’ve collected were intentionally laid out by the game developers. Say I’m correct, and that Ring really is, essentially, the child of Dark Influence’s greatest natural enemy.

The real question is: how self aware is Ring about all of this.

Because unfortunately, Ring not knowing his own backstory could be pretty on-brand for him. I love Ring, but from his point of view, it really could be that he just appeared one day, somehow—as an entirely clean slate. “Dark” or “bright,” these entities are brainless. Literally. No body means no brain. They can’t store memories, so they don’t have memories. Just energy.

Ring must know that he’s made from energy, too. He might even think of himself as one very lucky byproduct. But if this is really what Ring used to be (if there’s even a shadow of a chance that his predecessor used to eat people), then he might not know the full extent of his own story.

And maybe that’s for the best. I can’t imagine him choosing to get close to people otherwise. He loves people, cares so much about every single silly soul that he meets.

This would hurt him.

Whatever Ring’s origins may be, whatever he might have once been (if he’s ever been anything else at all)… I do know one thing. And it’s that I prefer him prefer him just the way he is.

Weird comments about my sweat aside, I wouldn’t have him any other way.

TL;DR: Our bud Ring has more in common with Dark Influence than with any other creature in all of Ring Fit.

If a flaming entity of negative energy can exist, then why not one made of positive energy? If positive energy condenses into permanent solids naturally and often…if Ring is made of positive energy…if Ring has more in common with Dark Influence than with anything else in this game…

Who’s to say that Ring himself, wasn’t once a flaming yellow mass of energy.

This marks the end. I could run wild with all the implications this theory leaves in its wake. But I’ve made my point. I’ve found every answer I was looking for. And they may not have been the answers I was expecting (or even wanting), but they’ve satisfied me all the same.

Ideas for Parasite Stories

Reading horror stories usually has me thinking about Parasite. Vampire stories especially are good source material to mine for what could be done with Parasite in terms of storytelling. Reading Salem's Lot was what made me really start thinking about Parasite's potential as a more vampiric entity, and the arc he should undergo. So in honor of it being October, setting my take on Parasite's arc for the record.

Stage 1: The Hunger

Starting out I want Parasite as a thin emancipated figure who is almost out of his mind with hunger. This would be the stage where he's the closest to "classic" Parasite. All he cares about is his appetite and gorging himself. However unlike how he's usually written, I want to see some intelligence in how he feeds. I spoke a bit about how I want to see Parasite's powerset changed, and this would be the place to show that. I want to see Parasite eating and consuming high-ranking members of Metropolis society, and then using their forms to feed further. Very much an evocation of the "Invasion of the Body-Snatchers" horror franchise where Parasite walking amongst society causes terror and panic.

I think there's also something to be mined in terms of Clark and Parasite's "secret identities" at this stage. Clark wants to live amongst us as one of us, in order to maintain a connection with us. Living amongst us strengthens his empathy. Parasite is the opposite, he hides amongst us all the better to feed on us. Examining these two characters who aren't human, yet disguise themselves as ones, and how they view humanity could add some deeper flavor to the stories.

This Stage would end when Parasite finally gets "sated", taking on the fatter aesthetic of Gary Frank's design. Twist though: he's not fat, he's pregnant. With himself. One morning the guards of Stryker's Island hear screams coming from his cell, and rush to investigate. What they find there horrifies and disgusts them, the bloated carved up corpse of the old Parasite, and the new one standing smiling amongst the carnage. Turns out this new incarnation grew inside Rudy, and when it was ready it fed on him the way he fed on everyone else, draining his life force, memories, and personality into itself as it was born.

Stage 2: The Terror

This new incarnation still considers itself to be "Rudy Jones" as it has all of his memories and exhibits parts of his personality. Everyone who interacts with him can't believe that though. There's some fundamentally wrong about this new incarnation, something utterly inhuman. Whenever he tries to pass himself off as Rudy Jones, nobody listening to him can accept it. The old Parasite was dominated by an understandable human desire: the need to eat. This new version doesn't share the same weakness as his predecessor, he doesn't appear wracked by constant hunger pains, pushed to take a bite out of whoever he can safely eat. "Picky eater" is how analysts would describe this guy. Humans needs to have a certain flavor in order to appeal to him, and nothing tastes better to this Parasite than terror.

Parasite thus constantly seeks to spread terror throughout Metropolis to spice up his meals. He'll work for crime lords and megacorps, doing anything from assassinations to burglaries to sabotage, all to find entertaining new ways to spread fear and misery throughout the population. Superman recognizes that this is a new much more intelligent Parasite who doesn't have the same weaknesses of the old. Where the old one would love to take a bite out of Clark, the new one tries to avoid him if possible. He recognizes that attacking the Man of Tomorrow head on will result in failure, so he simply bides his time and lays plans to eliminate the main opposition he has.

Stage 3: The Dread Lord

In the final stage, Parasite reveals himself as the greatest threat to Metropolis and Superman yet. While he was performing jobs for the power players in Stage 2, Parasite was quietly utilizing a new power that neither Superman nor anyone else knew about. Instead of fully draining a person, Parasite had enough self-restraint to only drain part of a person's life force leaving the person alive but enthralled to him. These "Leeches" as they come to be called, also are able to drain others life forces to enhance themselves, although none can match the extent of Parasite's powers. They are seeded throughout major organizations in Metropolis, since so many proved themselves willing to try to use the Parasite for their own ends. Demanding a portion of whatever they drain from others, Parasite established a network of feeders who could provide him sustenance while he worked on a much grander scheme in private: turning Metropolis into his personal fiefdom.

Commanding most of his Leeches to kill the heads of whatever organization they're embedded in, Parasite wrecks havoc on Metropolis' institutions. Terror descends upon Metropolis as the city seems to turn upon itself. Superman is stretched thin trying to find the source of the attacks, the "hope" he tries to spread doing nothing to alleviate peoples fears about what will come next. The remainder of the Leeches are quietly attempting to seize control of whatever institutions remain, or pin the blame for what's occurring on Superman himself. Meanwhile Parasite has worked out a truly audacious plan: to enslave the entire city to his will, and to finally consume Superman himself. When that's done, nothing will be able to stop him from using the citizens and technologies of the most advanced city on Earth to bring the rest of the planet under his control...

This stage is all about contrasting Superman's "Hope" with Parasite's "Fear", how each uses their embodied attribute to empower themselves and those that follow them. Ultimately Parasite will be defeated of course, but the damage he wrecked won't be so easily forgotten. He'll have become the greatest terrorist to ever attack Metropolis, and not all of his Leeches will have been found. Some will still be operating in secret, ready to answer their master's call should it be issued. This sets up Parasite to be an ongoing never ending threat who can bring Metropolis to it's knees in a variety of ways whenever the writer wants to.

Well I think that would be an exciting set up/story arc for our freak anyway.

Eldritch Moon my beloved

I think most Magic players are going to have a favourite set. Often that’s going to be one they started playing with, or one that really got them into the game, or one that had a limited or standard format they really enjoyed. A lot of people won’t, and that’s okay, they’re allowed, it’s hard to pick favourites sometimes.

But for me, it’s Eldritch Moon, aka the last time we went to Innistrad, and things got a bit more tentacular.

Eldritch Moon had a lot working against it from the get-go.

The Shadows block immediately followed the Battle for Zendikar block, one which a lot of people Didn’t Like. Whether it be for some of the more questionable art direction, for the relatively weak cards and boring parasitic mechanics, and for arguably some of the lamest story the game has had to date. More relevantly, though, it was a pair of sets where a fan-favourite plane was essentially dominated by squid monsters and lost a lot of its unique identity in the process- gone was the fun D&D-esque adventure world, replaced by stark wastelands and a war story with like one good story article. It’s the Tazri one.

And then the next set was Shadows over Innistrad. Another return to a fan-favourite plane, with a huge mystery being built up as to why everything was going to shit again. Why Avacyn and her angels were turning on humanity, why there are all these funky stones everywhere, what exactly Nahiri was doing fucking around on the plane of someone she apparently doesn’t like very much.

There were cryptic hints in the set itself. Its title is a reference to the Lovecraft story, Shadows over Innsmouth, with a fair few cards alluding to the story itself. A few cards did have subtle tentacles in the art, as well as subtle warping of flesh and world. The most damning clue came in the form of a puzzle regarding different flavour texts for the card Tamiyo’s Journal, which gave a particular phrase- “Remember this: they came as three”- flavour text from a Battle for Zendikar card referring to the three Eldrazi Titans, only two of which had been dealt with in that story.

Despite this, people still denied that this was the plot-to-be. There were still rumours that it was somehow Marit Lage again after all this time, or that the threat was a new one, or that it was somehow the Gitrog Monster’s fault. Personally, I wanted to believe this, and desperately didn’t want the next set to be Eldrazi-themed- I’d gotten pretty sick of them from BfZ and OGW and was very much enjoying all the new Werewolves and Madness cards and Delirium mechanic. This was at the point where I was drafting at FNM weekly, and the fun differential between the two blocks was stark.

But of course, the mystery was revealed. It was old god Emrakul the whoooole time! Quelle fucking surprise. And yet it ended up being significantly better than the previous block, for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the story is just kind of better. We get to see distinctly through the cards and the plot how the influence of Emrakul has affected the regular citizens of Innistrad, and how all its various factions- the Church, the vampire manors, the packs of werewolves, et cetera- were all twisted in her visage. We get to see the desperate fight against them, with all these gothic horrors warring against eldritch horrors, and against themselves. And we get both Jace doing some surreal journey-to-the-centre-of-the-mind shit while Liliana gets to be the hero and Tamiyo gives us an ending that raises more questions than it answers.

Also, Sorin gets stuck in a rock. Fuck that guy, Nahiri was always cooler, and fuck War of the Spark for apparently just having them make up off screen.

Secondly, the cards. Flavourwise, the three Eldrazi Titans’ corrupting influence manifests differently for each- Ulamog consumes and drains the world, Kozilek corrupts the mind and wreaks havoc on space, and Emrakul? As we see, Emrakul twists flesh into new and horrifying shapes, that the set’s cards display in loving and disgusting detail. While Ulamog and Kozilek’s drones were clearly a part of themselves, the Eldrazi of Innistrad all used to be something much more reasonable before Emrakul made it to the plane.

There are three types of Eldrazi in this set. Firstly- the transform mechanic from Innistrads previous has been played with to suit the needs of the flavour. With the exception of Ulrich, every single double-faced card represents a creature from the world, be it Human or Werewolf or otherwise, that is touched by Emrakul and makes a permanent transformation into something else. There’re masses of limbs, shapes echoing Emrakul herself, and flesh in configurations that Should Not Be. The shift on every card is stark, and in every case, you have to actively put in effort to push them over the edge- and off a cliff which they cannot come back from. This is especially true with the Meld mechanic, with the cards fusing into this giant monstrosity that literally dwarfs every other card on the table.

The next type of EMN-drazi is the Emerge creatures. The mechanic was extremely fun, almost all the cards were eminently playable in at least one format (mostly just limited), and the art is spooky. The flavour of some guy on your table getting fucking chestbursted and having fucking Elder Deep-Fiend pop out is incredible, and each is a great way of showing how the regular fauna of the plane (and flora, like, I think Lashweed Lurker is a plant or something) are mutating in response to the creature’s presence.

Finally, there’s the cards that make 3/2 Eldrazi Horror tokens. There’s less of these and they’re less intense, but by and large they’re a representation of the regular people being affected by the whole thing. Just about every card that makes one of these involves a creature dying in some way (Desperate Sentry, Otherworldly Outburst) or being spawned by an existing mass of flesh (Hanweir, Howling Chorus), and it gives this sense that everybody is affected by this effect.

Of course, that was also a thing in Battle for Zendikar block. The whole thing was Eldrazi, Eldrazi, Eldrazi, with even vanilla 4/3 worms having something to say about fighting them. They key difference of Eldritch Moon is that the flavour of the world is still preserved outside of this Eldrazi presence.

What I’m saying is- the gothic horror of Innistrad is still present despite the eldritch horror of the set’s antagonist. There’s still a corrupt and violent church (albeit with a few more tentacles now), there are still cults and Frankenstein zombies and vampires and werewolves. Innistrad’s tone is compatible enough with the Eldrazi’s that the combination enhances the two rather than diminishes them.

The final thing I want to say is just- the set’s really fun. It has a bunch of my favourite classic limited cards- Thermo-Alchemist, Ulvenwald Captive, and Boon of Emrakul- along with multi-format all-stars like Grim Flayer and Collective Brutality. It has big potential get-there moments with the Meld cards and some of the flip Eldrazi, and splashy interesting cards like Emrakul herself and Harmless Offering. The set drips with flavour that enhances the gameplay, with very little wasted space.

It’s a set I only really have two complaints about. Firstly- lol Ulrich isn’t good and wasn’t what basically any werewolf fan was after. And two- it suffers from an eternal issue that Magic only recently solved, in that it’s a Small Set with a pile of mechanics that it cannot possibly fully explore in its 200 or so cards. The biggest victim of this is Meld, as they could only fit 3 pairs in under the restraints of the set size. And that’s a real shame, considering that it’s a mechanic that we’re probably never seeing again, especially considering the recent Midnight Hunt. I really think there was a missed opportunity to not have a few leftover Eldrazi in that set- whatever happened to the Dronepack? Or the corrupted vampire houses? I suppose, though, that “I want more!” can be the best complaint a creator can get.

Eldritch Moon had big shoes to fill. However, in my eyes, it didn’t just fill those shoes. It filled them and kept filling them until its distended toes burst out the front and sides of the shoes and just kept growing, and bending in really weird ways, and I think I’ve lost the plot of this metaphor. It’s my favourite Magic set, and I don’t see that changing for a while.
