i guess i think about "gender neutral" names a lot because of my mountains of ocs (i actually had to do some contorting with some of them because i was running out of free spots without conflicting with my other ocs or fandom names), and i was specifically thinking about mine (because i have to abandon the brief charm of being unintentionally misgendered by office ladies in the 90s because tbh shannon hasn't been a boyish name for a long time), and then i got actually served an article about it from my browser that uh. man actually a lot of names that read girly to our modren sensibilities were quite masculine 3 or 4 generations ago, and names that get too much girl on them almost never go back to neutral or masculine, and you really only have an enduring neutral name if there's relative demographic parity, like "alex."

I decided not to update the first machine, instead make a new machine. We might need the old machine for .. for..

I inch away to the door feeling like I can leave now. Michael stops me to discus the research on the baby's blood. How it seemed to be positively effecting Dathen. I almost got a complement for 'making them'. But he wont give me the credit for improvement and just betrays on about the small amount of hybrid wraith in Dathan did not prove the blood could help Nala. After seeing Marcellus's DNA structure get completely changed he questioned my methods, reminding me Nala had to be RESTORED in a complete and whole manner and not in some botched way.

I take a deep yet labored breath cause my lungs without the worms keeping healthy feel like a 80 year old man who smoked his way out of a paper bag. The guilt was to much, I grab Gwen's blood samples and take it to a further away lab to try to stop the liquification. I slack off my research on Caelus's cure a few more days to accomplish this. Day 18: The last day. You would think that it being the last day and being off of work, I could get this one done on time. But life gets in the way. SO, here we are, to cover the final day of witness testimony, submitted affidavits, letters and “process-verbal” entered into record. Are you tired of these posts? Jury is out on whether I will be back next year to do the British inquiry, day by day. (Maybe I should just do it now so each day will be on the correct day, protect me from my own laziness, personal issues and procrastination.) Enough about me, let’s dive in.

Today, testimony was taken on board the RMS Olympic, in the New York Harbor.

Haddock then reads for the record, the exchange of messages between himself and Captain Rostron of Carpathia. They discuss location, ice, particulars of letting the appropriate channels know what has happened, Ismay and that they believe it best that survivors do not see Olympic, that no transfer take place.

Haddock continues to read from Moore’s report, detailing how the names of passengers were passed on by a “half-asleep” Cottam, who asked to be excused for his sending. Moore wrote in his report, “during the transmission of names it was evident the operator on Carpathia was tired out”. Cottam had testified earlier in the inquiry that once he heard Titanic’s distress call on the night of the 14th, he got about a handful hours of sleep over the next few days until they reached New York. He was working the wireless non-stop, with and without assistance from an immobile, frost bitten Bride.

Moore relates to Smith that he received seven or eight messages to the effect of a request for compensation for the story of Titanic. Moore makes note of these in his report, however did not reply to any requests from papers such as the New York Herald, the Sun and the World. He also indicates that he was never told not to give out any information, however he and the captain held information back in a desire that it be more accurate.

In addition to answering Smith’s questions, Moore submitted his wireless report (listed above as process-verbal) that both he and Haddock referred to during their testimony.

The correspondence from Stanley Lord that was submitted into record is a letter to Smith in which Captain Lord corrected a statement he made while testifying, which ultimately is inconsequential in my opinion, and probably more of a formality correction than anything.

As you all know, I love a passenger story or affidavit. So instead of pulling a whole bunch of quotes, as I am so wont to do, I now have just linked all submissions above, for you to peruse at your leisure. Is it being lazy? Maybe a bit, but I wanted to end this day, with a sprinkling of quotes, (of which I hope to have not included any similar before) a few thoughts in regards to any submissions or quotes, and my conclusions prior to the final report.

McGough asked a dining-room steward whether there was any danger, shortly after he left his stateroom. At that time the steward told him “not in the least” and suggested he return to bed. Fortunately for McGough, he did not. This seems a theme throughout this inquiry, where immediately after or even some time after, Titanic crew members, such as stewards, were not totally sure of what was going on or, if they were aware, the severity of it. Personally, I believe part of this to be due to the inability to inform due to technology limitations of the time, solved by walkie-talkies and earpieces today. Additionally, if a steward were on watch, and had not heard anything yet, he or she would have no reason to say anything other than everything is fine. I would also consider the desire to not cause panic had some impact as well. Clearly, it would have been helpful if some sort of light or alarm or notification had been in place, for passengers and crew alike, but word of mouth, on an incredibly large ship, with over 900 crew members, some of whom are sleeping, would be time consuming. Time, unfortunately the Titanic and the souls on board did not have. This does not even take into account the time that would have been necessary to figure out the extent of the damage. So while I personally feel, there should have been some better systems in place, criticism of stewards who only passed on what they knew at the time, or what a higher up told them, should be discouraged. (As you might know, I am currently learning more about crew hierarchy and things of this nature in my new book)

“It was reported on the Carpathia by passengers, whose names I do not recollect, that the lookout who was on duty at the time the Titanic struck the iceberg had said: ‘I know they will blame me for it, because I was on duty, but it was not my fault; I had warned the officers three or four times before striking the iceberg that we were in the vicinity of icebergs, but the officer on the bridge paid no attention to my signals.’ I can not give the name of any passenger who made that statement, but it was common talk on the Carpathia that that is what the lookout said.” – Crosby (hearsay)

Imanita Shelley has an interesting story about her accommodations and slight mishap of rooms that happened upon the start of her journey. See above for a link to her affidavit. I would be interested to see the rooms which were referred to. It does not seem in her affidavit that she makes any mention of actual room numbers. This is also the first, I have read, mention of issues with the heat onboard Titanic.

“Afterwards, on board the Carpathia, a first-cabin passenger a Mme. Baxter, of Montreal, Canada, told Mrs. Shelley that she had sent her son to the captain at the time of the collision to find out what to do. That her son had found the captain in a card game, and he had laughingly assured him that there was no danger and to advise his mother to go back to bed.”- Shelley (a very strong accusation that if true is concerning, however others have testified that this was not the case)

 “I borrowed money from a gentleman and took this Marconigram myself and asked the operator to send it for me… it was not received… This is the only complaint I have to make against the Carpathia… He also said it was not necessary to pay him, because the White Star Line was responsible. I insisted, however, because I thought that probably the money might have some weight with them, as the whole thing seemed to have been a monied accident.” – Mrs. Smith

“On the night of Sunday, the 14th of April, 1912, my husband and I gave a dinner at which Capt. Smith was present. Capt. Smith drank absolutely no wine or intoxicating liquor of any kind whatever at the dinner.” - Widener

 Conclusions prior to the Final Report: 

You could really get into the weeds with the last 18 days of testimony, what people/boats had drinking water, saw her go down and thought she broke in half vs. went down in one piece, who was afraid of suction, who heard explosions, I could go on. Part of me wants to do this, I think it would be quite interesting, especially diving into the distant light/boat testimonies. However, I do not have the time for that these days, and you probably don’t either (if you do please share what you find). What I will say, on my last day-by-day summary post is this: If you are a Titanic crazed person like I am, and love the history, the nuances of what went wrong, what went right, specific passenger experiences directly from their hand or mouth, do yourself a favor, and dive into this. The Titanic Inquiry Project is the most complete, well organized, and informative Titanic site I may have ever had the pleasure of using. It's been a while. A lot of shit's been going on since I was last kinda active. Sorry, I dont remember how to hide this under a read more line... feel free to scroll past if you arent in the mood for existential whinging. I got a new job and it's pleasant. The people are nice. It's still food, but it's at a fancy restaurant where the management actually cares and tries to keep their crew happy. The hours could be better and I'm currently sick of salads with how many I've made. They give hours based on reliability and if you're a hard worker who is nice to work with. But like... everybody is nice and hard working so it's hard to just muscle in sometimes. But on the positive side I've dropped ten pounds, probably thanks to how light my wallet is. Had an issue with my little brother. Well, there's been an unspoken issue for years that I've been trying to just give him space on, but it finally came to a head. I called him out and he said some pretty hurtful things. I saw him on Christmas, but it wasnt the same. I think it kind of damaged something between us, or at the very least it certainly has me. I think, as people, we build these pillars of absolute truths into our identities. The things we know without a doubt, that we can rely on to stay true even when things are bad. Like, that the sky is blue or that a parent we have will always love us. When those truths are shaken they really make you wonder what else could be wrong or if there was ever any truth in it to begin with. For me, no matter how bad I felt or hated myself, I knew I could be a good sister. I'd throw myself down for it. I have done so, unfortunately, many times before. We all see the world a little differently, so my truth may not be the truth someone else sees. I dont know whether that makes it any better, but I certainly feel unsure about more things now than I used to. Some days I even feel like giving up on our relationship. I'm just too tired, too worn down, and I don't think I can handle being called a failure again. Which sucks, because I dont really want to. I just want to know how to fix it, even though I'm not sure I have any more energy to try again if it's just going to lead to another failure. And on top of all of that my bio dad and all those siblings are tasting the bitter consequences of their actions. My youngest sister got taken away from her parents because instead of breaking up and being adults about it they have to be petty and cowardly. One has unchecked anger issues mixed with plenty of excuses and the other thinks she's owed some sort of respect despite her immature actions. Thing is, I've had plenty of talks with my bio dad about the effects their toxic relationship have on his 6 year old daughter. He knows. He isnt stupid or blind. He'd just rather keep it going despite everyone's unhappiness and dig a deeper hole so he doesn't have to risk losing custody of his daughter if they break up. And here we are now. With his daughter taken away and given to our 21 year old sister who doesn't have a clue. And they've failed to regain custody once already. And you know the fucking hilariously tragic part of it? Me and my sister Des are the only two without some sort of record so nobody else in the family can help. Just a fucking warning for any teens out there who think being a gangster is cool, life always has consequence. Doing drugs, selling pills, pimping, stealing cars, assault, having unregistered weapons... my family has probably done just about anything. Apparently my bio dad's stepfather even threatened to shoot my grandma once. There's an argument to made about the environment they all grew up in, but I really wish people would just have the self awareness to realize that things will always find a way to bite you in the ass and it's it big enough then it'll get the people around you too. I normally get my sister on weekends, but I need to work Saturdays as a requirement for my employment. I try to cut it short so I can be there when they drop her off, but half the time they dont and send her somewhere she isnt supposed to go. I'm risking my job trying to be there when I'm needed, just for them to change their mind at the last second because I wasnt home soon enough. They'd rather risk losing our sister to the system by breaking the rules. CPS doesn't play around. I've had to tell them two or three times that I couldn't take our sister because I was sick or dealing with some really stressful family stuff that Koral didnt need to be there to see. Every time I feel like the punishment is that they stop letting me see her by not bringing her over anymore. Then out of the blue they call on a weekday and ask if I can take her because she has a day off or something. I have never once said no but every time it sends me into an anxiety attack because I can't handle being kept in the dark until they need me. It's got me so worked up that sometimes I genuinely wish I had never been told my dad wasnt my real dad. Of course, I know that by knowing I can help a little girl who needs help, but I wont lie and say that I never wished I didn't have time deal with any of it. I got the news today that my bio dad is in trouble for something else, though they wouldn't say what. So they arent going to give him custody until that's settled at the very least. Shortly into it my sister had asked me to take over the guardianship. I was so out of the loop that I thought the question was absurd. I thought they'd pull it together and get her back in a short time, so what would the point of moving her to another town and school be? How would I go about that? What would the home requirements be? Would I be able to provide for the both of us? I wouldn't be able to leave work until 4 at the earliest shift, so would after school stuff be best or daycare? There's so much that goes into taking care of a kid to just spring that question onto someone. Now it's been four or five months and I'm hating the idea that she's stuck there in the middle of it all more and more. People keep telling me I should take her. Even my manager after I broke down and told him everything after my sister's call left me a mess at work, said that I would be the better option. I know what it's like to be fought over in custody battles and I understand way too well the fear of being taken away from your home as well as what it's like to change schools. I dont want that for Koral. I dont even know if I would be the better option. I talked to my cousin, whom I live with, about it for a while last night and she said she wouldn't be opposed to having Koral with us... but I feel bad making this her issue too. I want what is best for my sister. She's way too smart. You know when unqualified pet owners get a dog breed that is really smart and they struggle to meet the needs to keep it entertained so it just makes trouble? That is what my sister is like. My family has their strengths, but Koral is 6 and could run circles both physically and mentally around them. It might be "funny" now, but Lansing itself is a shitty influence on people and by the time she's a teenager and wants to go to a party, nothing is going to keep her from getting out short of bars on the windows and doors. The only thing stopping her from doing it now is motive. But would I do any better? I genuinely dont know. I wish I could talk to my brother about it. He knows where I come from and, even if he thinks I failed, he could at least tell me how to be better so I dont fuck up again for a little girl who is in a situation similar to one we were in. I asked Des today if she wanted to talk to their case worker about transfering guardianship. She said she's have to talk to her dad... which is bullshit. He lost the right to dictate where Koral goes when he fucked up. How is he supposed to be motivated to fix this if the only thing that has changed is that she doesn't sleep in her bedroom anymore? He shouldn't see her when he wants to or be able to say what happens to her. And I dont say that because I think he shouldn't ever be able to, because I want him to step it up, I just feel like he wont if things keep going as they are. ok so a lot of ppl, me included, prefer credit unions to banks... the difference between them is banks are a business and credit unions are like, a union of ppl putting their money together as members to fund the credit union. theyre both federally backed and insured but the structure of the organizations are different. they both have savings accounts (put money away) and checking accounts (hold money for use, take money out, debit cards) and loan programs and such. the pros and cons of them imo-

- con: not quite as high tech as most big banks but it really depends on your local credit unions bc mine does have online banking and a mobile app where you can take a pic of your checks to deposit them in your account. some dont tho- con: joining one has some requirements on membership. some credit unions are by county or state residence, some are by profession, etc. - con: sometimes it takes a little bit longer for deposits and such to transfer or process just bc there are less ppl working or less processing power or whatever, versus a multi billion dollar business bank with all sorts of bells and whistles+ pro: credit unions are community minded, theyre more involved directly in communities so you can feel like you’re not just banking but a part of your community. in my experience the customer service is way better+ pro: interest rates and just rates in general tend to be a lot better than at banks bc credit unions depend on member satisfaction to keep it rolling+ pro: when you open a savings accnt with a credit union the % of interest you gain from dropping money on them tends to be better than a bank. + pro: theres things called “certificate of deposits” aka CDs and what they are is you take a sum of money, say 500 bones, and agree to drop it as a CD in the credit union for a specific amount of time. 6 months, a year, even like 10 years. what happens is you agree with the credit union to basically loan that money out for a specific amount of time, but the return you get on it is pretty great. you get a return on it bc in effect youre loaning the bank cash to loan out to other members during that time, so you collect interest. every month that interest gets added and then the interest for the next month is even higher bc of added money. might not be a big deal when youre young with little income to spare but it can really help you out later in life+pro: tend to be better for small business owners+pro: umm m i cant think but google “bank vs credit union” and you can decide for yourself which ones more attractive to you

credit cards are like... ok so when you get a credit card they check your credit score and put a limit on how much money you can charge to a card. say you open your first credit card and you dont really have anything on your credit score so theyll probably offer you a “credit builder” type card, which has a limit of like idk say $500. REMEMBER THIS: NEVER SPEND MORE THAN 30% OF YOUR LIMIT!!!! that means on a credit card with a $500 limit, you should never charge more than $150 on it before paying it back. once you go over that 30% limit, it triggers a flag on your credit report that you’re sort of a risky spender. even if you pay it back on time every month and stay in the clear, it will STILL flag it and hurt your credit score.

if you want to build up your credit, its a good idea to open a feasible credit card account and do just that. small limit, never spend over 30%, and pay it off every single month. every time you make a payment, the credit card company reports it to the credit bureaus, and they post it to your credit report as on-time payments with no flags.

so, say you open a credit card with a $500 limit. you also have a bank/credit union checking account with a debit card attached to your account (debit cards are different than credit cards... credit cards you have to pay back. debit cards take money out of your account and when you account is run dry, the debit card will get rejected if you try to use it.)... when you get paid at work you have your paycheck direct deposited into your bank account, and you mostly use your debit card to buy stuff or whatever. but you want to work on your credit score and get some activity on your credit report and build up a good credit history. so you take this limited credit card and you choose one thing to use it for- a good idea is gas or something that you wont need more than $100 a month for. so you buy gas with this credit card, maybe some snacks, whatever it is, and you make sure to not charge more than 30% of your spending limit. then when you get your credit card bill you pay it off immediately, on time, every month. your credit score is going to be awesome!

your credit score is A LOT to do with: how often companies (like credit card companies) are reporting your payments, if you make late payments, and how long youve been making payments. the longer reporting history you have the better your score is, and the more payments you make on an account that is in good standing the better. stuff like loans, student loans etc, are on your cedit report too.

Creating A Repeat Pattern

Now that I have analysed some repeat pattern designs and know what sort of thing I need to achieve by the end of this task, I will be moving onto producing my own. I will be using illustrator to do this whole process which is good because I wont have to transfer objects from one program to another.  

Before anything, I firstly had to decided on what font I was going to use along with what sort of objects I was going to draw as well. I knew I had to do around 3 to 5 objects otherwise the pattern could either look too boring or too complicated. I decided to start with an axe which I did previous mention in my last post. I think this object will be very simple as there isn't really many details to add to this object. This means I can then draw some more detailed objects later on. So I started by getting an image from google chrome. This didn't have to be a high quality picture as I was only tracing it which meant I only needed the general shape of the object. 

Below is showing the general shape I traced from the image that I used. Although this screenshot wasn't actually how I left it. Once I tried adding the colours onto he design, it seemed very boring and looked quite messy too. I solved this problem by redrawing this axe completely, so that there was another section at the end of the object. This meant I could add in another colour to the piece. While doing this, I slightly changed the shape of certain places too. To draw this, I used the the ‘pen tool’ and just went around the image that I had placed behind. I had both of these things on a separate layer so that it made it easier for me. 

Here, is the final outcome I produced. I think this looks overall quite effective especially compared to when I coloured it before. To do this, I have gone to ‘object’, ‘expand’ and then selected the drawing and clicked on the ‘live paint bucket tool’. Doing this mean you can now choose any colour and click on the areas you want coloured. Although before this, I decided on having this brown stroke as I felt this would add to the outcome. I remembered in one of the repeat patterns in my research did this and I thought it was really effective. I then went ahead and coloured in the rest of the object. Before, this stage, I had actually already decided on what colours I was going to use throughout all my objects. The colours were light brown, dark brown and green. I felt that these reminded me of nature but also looked really striking together. 

I have then moved onto my next object which I chose to be a jar of Nutella. The reason for this is because I feel that a lot of people know that this product contains palm oil. But even if the viewers didn't know this, when looking at this repeat pattern design they can then learn form looking at this. As well as this, I asked one of my peers as to what the first produce that had palm oil in came to mind was, to which she responded with Nutella. I think that overall this was a god decision to go with as I found it easy to trace but also as everyone should have at least heard of this product/brand. 

Below is presenting what the result of this drawing looks like after tracing it. As you can see, I have added a highlight onto the corner as I thought this might improve the overall look. I decided on only adding in one of these as it could become too much otherwise. Another thing is that I also felt to only draw on the word ‘nutella’ and not the image that would normally be sitting beneath this. This is because it could overcomplicate things and once it has been placed onto a repeat pattern design, this wouldn't show at all. 

This is the outcome after adding in colour to the piece. From looking at the jar whilst doing this, I thought to have the letter ‘n’ in green as this would then relate to the real jar. The reason for this is because this letter is a different colour on the real jar so to make this seem as realistic as possible I did the same but with my colour palette. Once I have finished doing this, I was actually very surprised with the end result as it looks so clean and effective. Again, I have added a thin stroke to which this time it is the dark brown colour instead. This now means that the lid and label of the jar standout from the background. 

Here, is an orangutan that I have traced once again. This is the object that I did previous plan on drawing as i would say this is one of the most obvious objects that people associate with palm oil. Or at least the main animals that gets effected by this. As you can see from looking below, I have created the lines so that they are thicker this time. I did this because I had already planned on what colours I was going to use. But I also thought that as there are more details features in this drawing, that I would make sure they are all visible. This animal took me quite a lot of time to get right as I couldn't get the line and shape right at first. Although, I ended up manging to do it and I think it has achieved an appealing effect. 

This is now showing how I chose to produce this object when adding in the colours. I thought that as this was the main element and the most detailed too, that I would make this a little more prominent when I get to adding it all together. So to do this, I thought to use white as the stroke this time rather than a colour from my palette. I though that this shade would make the lines I drew pop out a little more. Next, I decided to have the outside sections from the mouth areas and face as being the light brown with the centre parts being dark brown. I couldn't add the green colour into the piece as there was no space for it to go, but I feel that this doesn't matter. To finish this off, I chose to have the eye and nose area as being black. 

After this, I decided on drawing one more object, but at first I want sure on what this was going to be. I thought of having an inside of a log where I could show the lines that go round. But just as I was about to try this idea, I thought that I could have palm fruit instead. This then relates a lot more closely with my theme but I have also used palm fruit in my collage design as I knew what they looked like. Once I got some images up on Pexels, I wasn't sure at first on whether to go for a single palm fruit or a bunch. I chose to go on Pexels as I knew from previous work that there are some good quality images I could use. 

I then traced around one of the images where I decided to only include three of the palm fruits which were the three at the focal point of the image. When I started drawing these onto my page, I wasn't sure at first on how they were going to come as they didn't look like palm fruits to me. However, once I had added the colours onto the piece, I think this completely changed. As shown below, I have put the stroke as being the light brown colour with the main part of the object being dark born and details as green and light brown. Now looking back, I probably could have made the stroke a little thicker as it hardly shows. 

Here, is then the font and colour at which I chose to add to my pattern. I did actually use this font in the previous work where I was adding text onto my symmetrical designs. But I thought to use it again as I was attracted by the idea that it was a serif font but had a bit of curve to it. Another thing is that I chose to ever so slightly change the position at which each letter sits at. So to do this, I went to ‘object’, ‘create outlines’ and with the ‘selection tool’ I can move each letter individually. I only repositioned a few of the letters but I just wanted the letters to all be close to one another. This should then work a lot better once put on the design as it wont mix with any other elements. 

As you can see, I have also changed the colours so that the first word being ‘palm’ is in dark brown and the other is green. I thought this would give a little more interest to the words and match with the colour theme. 

Here, is the first composition I put together, where I have duplicated a couple of the objects to fill some of the gaps. The page that I created for this was 200mm x 200mm. This is a perfect square which is what I wasted as the repeat pattern process will work better this way when it comes to changing the layout later on.

 As well as this, I have added another element on the page too, which is another bit of typography. I chose to do this because I thought that having a more messgae based bit of type could help to give a point across as well as for the viewers to understand what this is about too. 

I have also rotated the text so that it is no longer written horizontally. The reason for doing this is because it will make the overall pattern become less predictable. 

Although, this previous pattern didn't seem quite right as there was areas in which didn't look very effective. Beneath, is presenting where I have drawn a black rectangle behind the rest of the design. I chose to do this because it will help me to know what its going to look like later on when I start adding background colours to the piece. I can now see what areas will show the background and parts are filled. When I did this, I saw that there were two gaps in the palm fruit. I didn't like this so I covered it up with another shape presented behind. 

Additionally, I think this new layout works a lot better. I have reflected one of the the axes so they have a complete different look. I have aloes thought carefully about the sizes in which I have each object. Further more, because there is a black background here, this meant I had to change around the black type so that its now white. To me, I feel this achieves a really striking effect as it looks very clean and pops out from the backdrop. 

Lastly, this is the exact same composition as the previous screenshot but I have just taken away the black background. The reason for this is because this was only a test to see if it still works with a different colour. Also when it comes to actually turning this square into a pattern, I can’t add a backdrop at this point. This step comes later on. 

Overall, I have now completed the hardest and longest part of this process to which I’m very pleased with the results. At the start, I remember I had no ideas on what objects would work well for this but it was actually a little easier than expected. Along with this, I really enjoyed creating this too. This might have been down to the objects that I chose as they were quite simple meaning they didn't take too much time. My next step will be to turn this into a repeat pattern where I can then play around with colours.

 As we are nearing to the end of this project, I began to list what factors we have yet to research or are less confident to present. I realised we haven’t yet seen any packaging work which, I was slightly worried about. Lydia suggested that she was going to create some packaging samples with mixed media which she will show to us in the next discussion. In the mean time, I was the only member of my group entering the CAD lectures and my tutor was suggesting ways to create the packaging for our brands. I thought it would be beneficial to create some packaging designs as a back up just in case Lydia hadn’t created them in time to present. The lecture was very useful as we were taught a new technique in making realistic packaging designs. We were introduced to a website called Mock Up Tree. This site enables you to add your desired designs onto different items through the use of a photoshop template. All you had to do was download the link. I really enjoyed this lecture as the website was really helpful to create these pieces and see an end outcome for all of our brand ideas. Below are some outcomes from these lectures which we could potentially use when showing what packaging our brand would have.

Outside of a standard mail box

I began creating a quick sample of an existing idea in my head with the intentions of developing it deeper later on however fortunately once i finished i actually preferred this end result. I have been frequently mentioning how much I would like illustrations to contribute with Self Made which is why I began to use them on the side of the box. I used the cherries which I had made with the Paint Brush Tool on Photoshop and pasted them over into this new document. The slight problem i had with doing this and that has happened numerous times with my CAD work was that pasting these over left a white residue around the symbols. At first I felt this was going to be a long winded task as I had to get rid of this white with the Eraser Tool. Despite this and knowing this was going to be a quick sample, I decided to quickly rub around the images leaving me with a white border on the images. When I fed back to the lecture call and shown them this work, they actually preferred this residue on the cherries as they said it looked more visible against the box almost like stickers. Having a blind eye react to this is always beneficial as they see much more potential from the work in comparison to myself who is probably not liking the outcome the more i work on it. Never the less he gave me an alternative option which is much quicker than using the Eraser Tool around these images. He told me to use the Colour Range feature on photoshop which cuts away the highlighted colour of an image. This was much quicker and I tried this out so I was to compare both results of the cherries. Weighing out these options, I actually began to prefer the first example I made with the white border as it seem much more playful and vibrant. I thought it could be hard having to create this sort of imagery against a cardboard box however seeing how effective this mistake was, I defiantly began to enjoy this process and had new ideas for the rest of the photoshop template.

As this template is already made, to see the results of the work you have to save the documents frequently. Above is what the side of the box would look like. As I and to copy and paste loads of cherries and position them in a way in which they were scattered onto the box, I merged all of the images into one layer once they were placed. This was much easier to use the layer if I wanted to but this new design elsewhere. As you can see I also have added our brands logo on the centre of the box mock up. Originally, I used the white outline outcome of our logo however when testing the other colours, I thought the red looked much more suitable. I love these outcomes of the logo, especially the different variants of them. Having these outlined versions with no fill reduces the amount of colour yet still holding our message with the playful font. I believe if the standard pink logo was to be on here, every aspect of our brand would be laid out the same throughout. I don't think this would be an effective way to produce our business. As a consumer myself, I like seeing a variety of a brand and the different outcomes they can make while still creating the same narrative.

Because our audience is of a younger audience, its important that our packaging is engaging to the eye due to the figures above. I think the packaging is in the right direction for our brands purpose and intentions of having a safe space for women to not feel judged or different when shopping.

As I didn't have an initial or structured design before making these template designs, I began to create as I went along. I knew I had only advertised our brand so far with the logos and drawings but I wanted to add some encouraging quotes and phrases which might help boost a women's mentality temporarily when opening their package. As I am passionate about this sort of behaviour already, I already had quotations which helped me personally so I used them for this work. Above you can see I used the secondary font for Self Made rather than the font, Soap as I think it would look too messy using one font throughout the packaging. Having a powerful and inspiring quote was enough and I think it would be more internalized with a classic font rather than a bubble typed face. I was stuck between having the font quite bold or much thinner but I concluded with the standard font as it looked cleaner against the box. With the help of the colour psychology work, I used the pink and red for different reasons. I used the pink to symbolise the warmth and love the text brings and then used the slight contrast of the red to show how important it is to love yourself also. I didn't want the words to come off too harsh to the reader which is why I chose these colours which are normally associated with love and passion.

I decided to finish the previous template as I liked it and didn't want to overwork it. Above is some designs of the interior of the mailer box. As I began to understand how the template works in relation to layers, this process became much more easier for me to create. I used the layered cherries on the outside again just to keep things consistent. I didn't add to much to this as the priority would lie in the centre of the box where the consumers clothes would be so their attention wont be elsewhere once they open the box. Despite this, I added the simple logo in the centre as well as other text on the inside. Again I tried both variants of the logo but yet again much preferred the red outline. I added things like the Self Made website and another encouraging piece of text so a consumer feels happy and welcomed when they receive their parcel. The image on the right is the final outcome of the box interior.

I created all of these mock ups with the help of my illustrator art boards. Keeping the tabs open while making these mock ups enabled me to change and create new pieces of work quick to transfer over to Photoshop. As you can see the grey around of the document was where I was doing this. This was easy for me to create the work and I found this much easier and fun to create. When I fed back these outcomes to the group, they really loved how clean and realistic these packages where. They said they wanted to use these for the packaging factor of the presentation. Although I was pleased as I loved this work and was proud of the outcomes, I was slightly worried as these were aimed to be a backup piece of work rather than the actual outcome for Self Made. I was still hoping to see Lydia's results with her mixed media idea however she said she hasn't made any and preferred my results. This meant we didn't have any results prior to me making these which was worrying however glad I did them as I will defiantly use this website again for this project. My group had previously mentioned gift packaging for Self Made where a customer was able to get a better quality package for their items and a percentage of the extra fees where to go to a girls charity. I brought up this existing idea and they asked me if I could create a gift box package. I agreed to do this as I enjoyed this process. In the next post was my process when making the gift wrapped package with a more advanced mock up template.

So I’m done with part one! this got super freaking long, so readmore:

Navani focus! I am so very happy about this, y’all have no idea. And given that the fused are going to strike at the tower, specifically to mess with the very fabrial Navani wants to fix, she’s going to do something amazing. 

Also, I don’t have to worry about her living to the end, or the tower being lost, because the epigraphs for part one seem very likely to take place after the events of the book.

I do have to worry about Kaladin, especially because I really don’t think spending more time around Lirin is actually going to help his mental state. 

That being said, I did enjoy the evidence that he was excited about his parents moving in-- the idea of him and Syl picking out toys for Oroden is so sweet. I’m excited to see him spending time with Oroden and his mom.

I’m less excited that Shallan and Adolin are leaving without him; I get why sending him on the honorspren expedition is a bad idea, but it seems like the parts of his support system that are adapted to his current situation, as opposed to his parents who are used to him as a child, have been systematically stripped away (Rock leaving, Windrunners deployed in Azir, etc).

I continue to be super interested in what Brandon’s doing with Rlain-- he still hasn’t been able to draw in Stormlight, and he refuses to bond with a spren who’s been coerced. I hope he ends up with a spren anyway; we know it’s possible from Venli, so the honorspren just have to stop being assholes.

I initially thought that Kaladin only ordered the grouchy honorspren to consider Rlain, not to bond him, and I kinda agree that he shouldn’t be allowed to threaten a spren into bonding someone; he knows how much they hate being trapped.

Which brings me back to Navani being threatened. Who could have had the chance to smuggle the spanreed ruby into her box? My immediate prediction would be the Mink, who goes missing with incredible ease, but we really don’t know enough about him at this point to guess. 

Second question, what ‘new fabrials’ does she need to stop making? It has to be a big deal, something she’s known for; it has to be conceivably causing suffering to someone. I do wonder if maybe it’s just the ones with spren trapped in the physical realm, instead of Cognitive, but Navani definitely didn’t invent this procedure-- why would they be holding her responsible?

Another possibility is that whatever Gavilar was doing has been pinned on her, which would make sense-- she’s known to be an artifabrian, whereas almost no one really knew what he was doing.

Almost no one-- Nale and another male herald (who I think by elimination has to be Kalak?) probably know the most. Nalan probably wont be helpful, though he’s promised to come teach Szeth Division at some point.

(Also, it’s hilarious that we all were wondering what relations were going to be like between Szeth and everyone else, and they just put him in jail. Navani’s encounter with him was wonderfully chilling, and true to the way he’s depicted in books 1 and 2. We like his antics with Nightblood, but he’s very much not stable and his reasons for switching sides don’t make any goddamn sense, tbh.)

On the other hand, we do have two heralds who are giving as much information as they’re capable of! Which doesn’t seem to be much, given that Taln is incoherent and Ash apparently doesn’t know anything. But still, it seems like several of our fonts of ancient wisdom have become very forthcoming, which is. So exciting. 

Wit’s only talking to Jasnah who also likes keeping secrets so who knows if we’ll actually get to hear any. Navani’s perspective on him is interesting, and I wonder why no one seems to have told her how clear he’s made it that he is actually something ancient-- Dalinar, Shallan, and Kaladin all seem to know. 

I also wonder who (if anyone) knows he’s a Lightweaver now. I continue to worry about what Hoid is planning on doing with all the forms of Investiture he’s collecting, but we didn’t get much info on him here.

Except Vasher seems to know a fair bit about him! Vasher wins the award for most useful worldhopper in this part. Like, guys, he explained the Returned. He didn’t even just explain it in a way that was confusing in-world but made sense to readers-- he explained it in a way that Kaladin, who knows very little about the wider cosmere, could understand. 

I do appreciate that it’s made clear that he figured out this stuff himself, and that his understanding could be (and has been) flawed. Still, we now have a workman’s understanding of basically all forms of immortality and resurrection thanks to him, which is fucking amazing, yall.

The other big sharer of this part: Mraize. We finally get some insight into one thing the Ghostbloods want-- a way to transfer Stormlight off-world. We’ve long known that the Ghostbloods were among the most organized worldhopping powers active in Stormlight-- for all we know the 17th shard is still hanging out in the purelake-- but this gives them an interesting context. They’re vaguely opposed to Odium but they don’t seem to care all that much, as long as their goals for power and/or economic fulfillment work out. Beyond that things aren’t clear. Yet

Which brings us to Shallan!

If she fucks this up and doesnt get the answers Mraize promised I will scream.

She’s become fairly stable, and also remarkably open about her alters. I think it’s kind of interesting that Kaladin is in the know but her brothers aren’t-- no matter how much she loves and cares for them, their lives are pretty clearly separate.

I’m pretty annoyed that she hasn’t told Adolin about the Ghostbloods, honestly; she really wouldnt have to explain much of her past to explain that she’s investigating them, and I really don’t think Adolin would take it badly. I mean, I don’t think Adolin would take any of Shallan’s past too badly, but I imagine her infiltrating a secret society wouldn’t even register for him.

I’m curious to see how the trip to see the honorspren is going to develop them and their relationship; Kaladin’s not going, so the love triangle is probably going to continue not to be an issue despite Adolin expressing worry about Veil straying, which, thank fuck for that.

Adolin rebelling against Dalinar is great-- I love how Kaladin notes that Adolin isn’t following the codes with religiousness anymore, but he’s ‘found his own balance.’ I’m a bit concerned that Brandon is going to write this as a problem, instead of something fair and natural; while I do think Adolin does have to come to terms with things a bit, he needed to stop hero-worshipping Dalinar and it’s good that it happened.

He’s clearly excited to go to Shadesmar so that he can talk to Maya more, so that will be a big part of things, which will be nice. I do wonder what exactly Shallan will be doing during the travel-y parts of this, though I imagine negotiating Shadesmar won’t be simple even if it won’t be as chaotic as last time.

(It is vaguely hilarious to me that they’re sending the couple who are bonded to a cryptic and a deadeye to meet with the honorspren and apologize for the Recreance. How could this possibly go wrong.)

I’m not super sure what to say about Venli’s plotline? It’s super interesting, I love the complex political hierarchy of the Fused and the way Leshwi deliberately is lower in status bc the position gives her more latitude. (Though it’s not clear to me how this status is determined.)

I like that Venli isn’t just joining up with the humans; I was excited about the possibility but I guess it would feel cheap. She seems somewhat aware that the Fused won’t just let her get what they want-- and more cognizant than Leshwi that they wont just fade away if the war ends-- but I’m not sure I see how exactly she’s going to go forward from here.

She is going to help the Fused trying to infiltrate the tower. Raboniel is experimenting with spren somehow, and Venli can see into the Cognitive Realm with ease; that should be interesting.

(Sidenote, Raboniel reminds me heavily of Semirhage, and the Pursuer reminds me of Demandred. I can’t imagine Brandon is totally unconscious of the parallels, especially given that these are his “dark one’s” constantly-resurrected leaders, and I think that’s fun)

Leshwi is also worried about humans learning to trap the fused, or perhaps all singers, the way they did the unmade. I am also worried about this, as it seems like a temptingly effective but also horrific solution to the issue of the constant resurrection of the fused. 

The most promising thing about Venli’s storyline is that she might make it easier to reach a resolution to this whole series that doesn’t require the extermination of one side, which I have some faith Brandon wouldn’t do.

(It’s hilarious to me that they just yeeted Nergaoul into the ocean, especially considering that you can see trapped spren in shadesmar somehow, and oceans there are land.)

In any case, Venli is going to collide with the tower squad soon enough, probably by the end of the book, and I’m excited.

I hope this doesn’t end with Rlain defecting away from the humans and to her, though that would be understandable especially given his inability to fully integrate with the Windrunners.

Sundry other things-- I wonder if Navani’s drive to understand will help her deal with Re-Shephir, who to my understanding is still lurking in the depths of the tower somewhere? It’s interesting to me that trapping the unmade doesn’t seem to actually require any radiant powers.

My other theory, which I’d been developing over the course of rereading the last couple parts of Oathbringer, is that the ninth unmade is the Sibling, and that it would have to be reawakened, possibly cleansed somehow, and possibly re-imprisoned in the tower fabrial in order to make it work fully. The ‘resistance’ that Dalinar describes in investing the tower seems to support this, at least to me.

I do wonder which Shard the sibling is aligned with; parallelism would suggest Odium, and this kinda makes sense if she’s something like the unmade, though how this would then allow her to repel void creatures i’m not sure.

(Huh, when did I decide the sibling was a she? I think the stormfather does call her that, although in that case why aren’t they the sister? Hmm...)

What does it mean that Wyndle figured out chairs? I’m genuinely fascinated.

Jasnah’s abolishing slavery!! This does more to endear her to me than literally anything she’s done in the past few books. I do anticipate a significant fight over this, especially since a throwaway line in Shallan’s first scene suggests that freeing the singers has actually caused a huge spike in the slave trade, as was predicted a couple books ago. I can’t wait for Kaladin to hear about it.

The Kholin’s don’t trust Taravangian; I’m a bit unclear as to how much the rest of the coalition actually knows about what he did, though my understanding is that it’s a nonzero amount. I’m actually a bit disappointed that he’s reached an agreement with Odium, as now rather than jockeying for the best position he’s just straight-up following instructions and trying to get Odium to win. He’s not trying to save as much of the world as possible anymore; all he can save now is Kharbranth.

I do wonder how he’s concealing his compassionate days now that everyone knows he’s a genius; it’s easy to pretend to be stupid when you’re smart, much harder to do the opposite. Maybe he just says he’s sick.
