The fact the Denji is just so used to being stuck in shit to the point where he barely has any strong reactions to things ever outside of being a bit thrown off at times and that one time a couple of chapters ago when Yoshida had both he and his sister held as captives where he was pretty much forced to stop being csm or else- Denji isn’t allowed any agency as a character and he cannot have what he wants regardless of how insignificantly small that thing might be. He’s always forced into making discussions that he doesn’t want to, even if they’re painful and scary. And it is always through him being guilted into making them.

The most recent chapter of Chainsaw Man gave me a lot of thoughts about Fumiko and Nayuta, I've brought them up before but I feel like this chapter gave me something to work with beyond just speculation.
Fumiko has been in an odd sort of place in the narrative, she had a strong start but then she just sort of hung around, not doing anything in particular to really drive the story forward, but in this chapter she does something that I think really informs about her character. Back when she gave her backstory to Denji, I've seen people say that she was lying to garner sympathies from him, but I ran with the assumption that she was telling the truth, that her parents were killed by Gun Fiend Aki, she saw him cry and came to form an empathy for him and had wanted to protect and keep him safe, but I think she was downplaying how she resented Chainsaw Man not being able to save her parents. For Fumiko, I think her grief has manifested into her having conflicting views of Denji, ones that she cannot compartmentalize, she can be a Denji fan, but at the same time resent Chainsaw Man, with the two viewpoints bleeding into one another.
I am under the impression that those guys who beat on Denji with bats at the karoke bar were plants to try and prove to Denji that he needed a bodyguard, and that Fumiko was supposed to get him there to prove herself. There were a number of ways she could have done this, just showing an interest in him and saying that she wants to go singing would have likely been enough to get him going, but instead she groped him without his consent, told him to suck a tentacle dick for her own amusement, and then let him take the beating because she wanted to keep singing. This was the first hint to me that despite being assigned to protect him, she clearly saw no problem with him being humiliated and hurt, that as long as "he was good in the end", then she could tell herself that everything was good and that she was able to keep him safe.
And then we get this chapter. I've seen people call Fumiko useless and a big coward, but I don't think that's it. Her decision to leave Nayuta behind wasn't some panic-induced fight or flight, but a deliberate choice she made, one she thought about. She wants to protect Denji, but that's not Denji, that Chainsaw Man, and it's not her job to protect him if he gets in over his head, is she supposed to fight the humans she's meant to protect? That's the sort of thing she can tell herself to justify her actions to herself and why she flees, leaving Nayuta in a situation she has little hope of succeeding. Chainsaw Man didn't save her family, so why should she save his?
Then there's Nayuta, and the most fascinating thing is that she can control only so many people at once.
We saw what Makima was capable of, how at the end of Part 1 she had dozens of PS hunters under her control, so many people and devils to do her bidding and who thanked her for it, it's so far beyond what Nayuta can do. The Control Devil's powers work on her perception, how she can control those who she views as her lessers, and Makima held an important position in the government, she had a contract that made her invincible, so many people like Aki, Angel, Violence and the Hybrids showed her love for no other reason than she demanded it, and everything in Part 1 was her just gathering more power and influence so she could get more power and influence. It's system that feeds into itself. Nayuta on the other hand doesn't have that, she has no thralls, no power or influence. The self-perception aspect of this ability needs to have backing to work, it can't just be delusion.
Nayuta is different from Makima because what they want out of life is different, Makima was a conqueror with an army who wanted to change the world in the way she saw fit, Nayuta on the other hand wants to go to the park with her brother. What they want affected who they became, and I've said it before but a happier Control Devil, one who knows love and can love in return, would be weaker for it. Nayuta begged Fumiko for help, Makima never would have done that. Makima killed people without a second though if she felt it could work for her, but Nayuta takes no pleasure in that kind of violence, it's not fun like Denji made it out to be, and she only resorted to killing when Denji was out of there because he told her not to do that.
This was a very strong chapter for these two, it fed into theories I had about them and I am eager to see what happens with them next and where their character can go from here.

You held your breath, desperate not to make a noise, as you gripped for dear life onto your friend’s white hair, “feels like your gonna rip my hair out” the man chuckled breathlessly before burying his head back into you crotch, you let out a breathless moan feeling his tongue wriggled it’s way back inside you, “Gojo please… more” you whimpered still trying to remain as quiet as possible.
You and Gojo had been good friends since high school, you guys became friends because Gojo helped you with a high grade curse, that was causing you trouble and ever since then you’d been ‘besties’. However only recently you and Gojo have started sleeping together, it started one night, where you’d both gotten really drunk and crawled into bed together and one thing led to another, that was six months ago, now you two are officially friends with benefits.
You had come to the school, knowing Gojo would be working late just to ‘tell’ him about the horrible date you just had, the man listened to you complain before getting on his knees to make it up to you… so here you were now struggling to stay quiet, as your long term friend are you like a staved man. You let go of gojo’s hair and passed a hand over your mouth, “Satoru… I can’t take this any longer…” you moaned into your hand, the white haired man pulled away momentarily “you taste so good, I could eat you all night” he chuckled before sucking your clit between his lips and lifting your legs onto his shoulder, Gojo sucked roughly on your clit as he forced you to lay back on his desk before tracing your entrance with two fingers, the thighs tightened around his head ever so slightly as his fingers plunged into you. Your eyes fluttered as his fingers pressed into that spot he knows drives you crazy, “Satoru…” you gasped out as you felt a tingling in your core, Gojo quickly pulled his mouth off you and leaned up to your face, keeping his fingers inside you as he roughly kissed you, muffling your moans and whines. Your legs still hooked over Gojo’s shoulder had given his full access to the clenching hole, you were so close, so close in fact you weren’t sure why you hadn’t come yet, “please… please… more” you begged as you looked into gojo’s icy blue eyes. Gojo began to fiddle with his pants, only to lean back still pumping his long slender fingers in and out of you, you watched as the man skilfully opened a condom wrapped and slipped it on his member with one hand, not ones faltering his pace.
The white haired man began to scissor his fingers inside you before spreading your entrance open and instead thrusting into you, you let out a loud squeal as your whole body fell into ecstasy, your legs shook, eyes rolled back, head fell back and hands gripped tightly to gojo’s shirt as your cunt gushed out all your pent up desperation and frustration, by the time you came down from your high Gojo was already fucking you hard, wet slapping fill the room along with groans and moans. “Squirting like that… you know that turns me on so fucking much” Gojo groaned as he heard your hips in place, you looked over at his office door hoping no one heard you, taking a deep breath as you knew you were in for a long night.

Chainsaw Man.
*Spoilers ahead*
I found myself getting sucked into the manga and stayed awake reading until 5am. The story follows a kid who was left orphaned and homeless after being forced to kill his dad in self-defense. Denji ends up meeting and befriending a little devil called Pochita. At one point, he was lured to his death by the yakuza he was working for to clear his debt. It was after being chopped into pieces and dumped in a dumpster, in the throes of death and mourning for the normal happy life he never got to live, that he inadvertently formed a contract with Pochita. Then, he became Chainsaw Man. One of the most feared Devils in Hell.
What sucked me in about Chainsaw Man were many things. I liked the concept of Devils that are born out of human’s fears. This created a never-ending supply of interesting characters and plot points. The possibilities were endless. The writer did a good job of injecting humor into an otherwise bleak and dark story. The main character—Denji—is a main character unique in his own right. He is ultimately a simple dude just trying to live a happy normal life, to have all the regular life experiences everyone has—like going to school, having friends, getting a girlfriend, eating well, having a bed, and a well paying job, to name a few. Many times, his stated motivations for fighting—or for doing anything for that matter—comes down to something to do with girls; he wants his identity to be revealed as Chainsaw Man so that he could get all the girls, he fights incredibly powerful foes so that he could do different things with Makima—his original crush, the examples go on. Often, characters in the story make fun of or look down on Denji for his simple and somewhat perverted goals. I found Denji's response to this criticism to be surprisingly poignant in its simplicity: he didn’t have the luxury of having cool lofty goals like other characters because for so long all he dreamed of was to just survive and have a normal life.
The story and its logic makes sense and also does not. How is Chainsaw Man somehow the hero of Hell, stronger even than Bomb, Gun, Hell, Control, Doll, Angel, War Devils, etc., the list goes on? How is it that Chainsaw Man is the one with the power to eat and thus completely absorb and erase from existence any Devil he consumes? To a certain extent, I guess it’s not supposed to make sense. The characters—Chainsaw Man and Denji himself—is chaotic and unpredictable. That is arguably his main power.
The most powerful aspect of this manga is its character and plot development. Its slow and steady reveal that Makima was in fact the main antagonist all along was beautifully executed. The story first makes the readers admire her and think of her as the main love interest for Denji. Then her true nature slowly gets unraveled until the readers discover at the same time as Denji that Makima was in fact the one orchestrating everything all along. The most salient scene was when Denji sought out Makima after killing Aki and asked to be her obedient dog so he didn’t need to think anymore. It was then that she laughed hysterically to Denji’s complete confusion and finally revealed that everything Denji had experienced up to that point, including his close relationships and strong emotions, had been deliberately manipulated by Makima from the very beginning. She then demonstrates her total control over Denji by ordering him to open the door to Makima’s apartment so she could then kill Power right in front of him. She did all this with the intention of breaking Denji’s spirit so his contract with Pochita could also by extension be broken. She intentionally set out to make Denji lose his will to live. Why? Because she is a fan of Chainsaw Man, and his ability to erase out of existence any devil he eats. She wants a world in which problems like hunger, death, suffering doesn’t exist. Her stated goal was so simple, and yet built on an insurmountable sea of pain and lives lost. It did beg the question: what goal would ever be enough to justify creating that much suffering?
All the world building and character development was done so well, you find yourself having visceral emotional reactions as well to the many twisted turns and losses at the end. Denji represented not only an emotional mirror but amplifier for the readers in the story.
I can’t remember the last time a manga made me go through so many emotional rollercoasters. From sad, devastated, surprised, annoyed, angry, to hysterically laughing and smiling. As long as you can focus more on the general story and the characters, and look over some minor logical leaps, hugely recommend!!! 10/10.
