As Nylon isn't environmentally friendly, I discovered the second best fabrics which our group could use for our activewear garments which was Bamboo. Bamboo fabrics are eco-friendly and responsibly sourced. The bamboo plant grows quickly without using pesticides, excessive water or care. This would be more suitable for our brand as it wouldn't produce plastic pollution like Nylon does. It was hard to find a supplier that sells fabric alone rather already made products however I found a business called Dragon Fly Fabrics. Having fabrics would be much more beneficial as we are able to control our own scrap waste. It would be important for these fabrics to be dyed naturally rather than with chemicals. The only problem with this is that we would need to find a way to use this sample as we don't want to waste any fabrics.  Moving away from activewear, our priority is loungewear and fabrics which are comfy and environmentally friendly. The main fabrics for two piece loungewear sets and trousers which our brand is interested in is cotton or linen. As these garments are fairly similar to sleepwear and have they same purposes, I found it easier to research under sleepwear. This is because some loungewear consists of jersey or fleece for garments like joggers and hoodies. As our aim is to use patchwork, these fabrics would be too thick to create this design on so I thought it was best researching for lightweight fabrics. Although Cotton is sustainable, I would say its one of the most popular fabrics. This popularity comes with high demand which I think could cause factory farming and fast fashion. Using recycled cotton is best if we considered this fabric as we are hindering it from going into landfill. I also looked into other fabrics that would be suitable for our collection in which I came across a fabric called Lyocell. The only problem with this material is that it is semi- synthetic meaning there was a chemical process when creating it. 

Lyocell is created from the cellulose in wood-pulp from trees. This comes from trees like Oak, Eucalyptus and Birch and is broken down and reformed into woven fibres. The fabric has high Elasticity which I thought would be good if we were to do both loungewear and activewear. It would be ideal not having too many suppliers in order to keep our carbon footprint small however I don't think I want to use this fabric as much due to it being synthetic and chemically broken down. It also is more expensive which is a key factor to take in consideration. As I said before I need to ask my group if we want to lower the original value of these garments in order to keep out target market despite us loosing profit to begin with. Although there are many negatives for this fabric, it is breathable and lightweight which is sustainable for our garment ideas. It is also very durable and long lasting which I hope would reduce the amount of consumers throwing away clothing frequently. If this did occur, it wouldn’t cause as much harm as Lyocell is biodegradable. In comparison to cotton Lyocell is much less harmful as the manufactures don't use pesticides in order for the cellulose to be released from the tree. Cotton does use water pesticide and is very labour intensive due to its demand in fast fashion which is why I think overall our brand should use Lyocell in order to cause as little harm to our planet as possible. 

Lyocell is produced in both Europe and China which is expected however I think it would be best to by from a supplier who manufactures in Europe as this is closer to the UK and reduce our carbon footprint. I have yet to find a business which sells this fabric however when looking in the shopping section on google the price ranges between £25-£30 depending on how many metres you would like. There are sellers on eBay however I would prefer to find a business which is more sustainable as most products which sell stock on eBay can be harmful to the environment or are shipped further away than Europe.

I think it would be best to buy these fabrics organically and then dye them ourselves as the businesses I've researched don't explain how they have dyed their fabrics. I began to research which natural dyes are best for fabrics.

The final piece of research I did regarding this factor, was the reasoning behind the expenses of sustainable fabric being higher than the standard clothing. I didn't know much about this topic so I think it would be just as important to include this information on our website in order to inform and educate our customers.

Black paint

Black paint is an art piece I created experimenting with abstraction and the material wall filler. This piece was all about my experimentation with materials I have never used or consider using before. Wall filler paste is not a common media what many people use, however I have come to realisation this product is very good. The thick paste is easy to manipulate when its soft and it takes an hour to dry. Once it is dried it hardens giving a 3D thick textured look which I really like. The bright block colour of white is very astonishing. I will be using this product to further experiment in my future work.

To create this, I started off with a plain blanc canvas board which I painted black which will be the colour of the background. I used the wall filler paste straight as it came as I found the white colour breathe taking against the black background. Using a palette knife, I scrapped in the middle of the canvas across in a line which created two mixtures of textures. The smooth texture which the palette knife created and the thick sharp like texture which build up around the palette knife when getting the smooth thin layer. I used the white palette knife to incorporate into the piece. I stuck it on the end of the wall paste to create the illusion of someone holding the palette knife mid-way creating the piece. This idea was inspired by an artist called Jean Pauldonadini who I discovered with this page on Instagram.

Blank Painting – Further Development

After creating my first piece I wanted to know how it would look like with colour colours so I decided to further develop my work and I created another piece using the same process. However, this time I decided to use acrylic paint to add a colour on the wall paste. Doing this I found out that acrylic paint does work well painted on the paste. I used the colour blue as I have a special eye for the colour blue. I thought it would be a nice contrast between the black background.

However, this piece didn’t look as good as my first one. Yes, the colour did go on well but the pure white against the background worked so much better. From this experiment I have learned wall paste is a great media to work with as it is cheap and dries fast. Acrylic paint works well.

Mini scrapes

The mini scrapes are the base of all my experiments. This was the start of all my pieces I have created. To create these, they are all based on mixing PVA glue with other medias which is then scraped across on paper using a palette knife. The unique shapes that appear on the paper without any guidance on what the outcome will look like. The mystery of each scrape intrigues me wanted to create more and more.

With PVA glue and acrylic

First experiment started with mixing PVA glue and acrylic paint which created thick paint with I explored scrapping across the paper producing new shapes and different thicknesses with variety of layers.

With sand and acrylic

Another technique I created is mixing PVA glue with sand and acrylic paint. The same created really trough texture when its dried and the acrylic paint is to add colours for a range of colours and shades. The PVA glue creates a thicker substance which helps me with more texture for an abstract piece.

Scrapes

Further developing the mini scrapes, I created the scrapers by dragging out the scrape and experimenting with painting the background with the same colours and different colours. With PVA bring one of the main materials in this mix, it dries like thin rubber which really intrigues me. I also explored ripping off the glue when its dried taking the first layer of the paint on the paper leaving behind an abstract shape creating bright contrast between the colours.

Pink gone wrong

Pink gone wrong is technique I am created using cement. I choose cement purely because of the thickness I can manipulate and how cheap it is. Because I feature best with texture and the thickness, I use a large amount at once making cement the perfect media to use. It air dries hard but keeps the shape which is one of the reasons why I enjoy using this technique. To create this piece, I used board canvas to paint on as its strong and sturdy.

With all the experimenting with PVA I have come to find that I love the finish it has when it dries, the rubbery fell when you peel it off something. I found the easiest way to peel glue off was from peeling it off plastic. Plastic lids are the best way for me to explore which have turned out to be my best process of making work.

I first started using mixed acrylic paint with glue which poured onto a standard container lid. The glue dries up and you can see when you pull the glue off that the marks on the worn-down lid appear which makes the pieces that deeper and more unique. All the marks that have shown up with the variety of lids I used creates a story within the paint, which is what draws me in to use this technique more.

To further develop the glue lids, I explored more on the materials I can mix with the glue and acrylic paint for example, sand. I have manipulated sand in my work as it gives me the rough texture, I’m so fond of. My speciality is working in impasto and large scale so I tend to use a lot of amount of materials at once and over time I have found I love to use sand. It is a great medium to use as its affordable and when mixed with PVA glue and acrylic paint, it creates this sick substance I love. To include this more into my work I used sand in the lids.

Firstly, I mixed sand and PVA glue together which I poured on the lid and added paint in variety of colours to mix in with the glue. Using materials that are really different to each other it creates a mixture of textures once all has dried. The sand leaves a rough brittle texture but some parts where there is only glue has dried, it is really soft and smooth.

With the knowledge I had and the experiments I had made, I decided to produce loads of the glue lids to see all the marks and designs that show by manipulating the colours and textures.

Some glue lids I used a thicker layer of glue to make more them stainable. I started off with one layer of glue which I left to dry so I was able to play with pure acrylic paint on top and then added another layer of glue once it was dried. The contrast between the pure acrylic and the dry clear glue was very intriguing how I can manipulate the paint by trapping within layers of glue.  

Jellyfish

Jellyfish was created using only thread. I combined 4 different threads together to create this as I used slightly different shades of blue for allowing to make shadows and light instead of having one colour blue. I used the two main colours of blue for the base of the body and used the darker blue thread for the shadow underneath the head of the jellyfish to give it a more realised look which did really help. I used thin strands of white thread for the top of the head to indicate there is light reflecting which also makes it that much more realistic.

I did start working on the jellyfish on a primed board which I painted in advance of the colour white so I have a base to start messing with the threat to create the figure of my jellyfish. To keep the thread firm on the board I used PVA glue to mix with each thread piece and glued it on the board. This has worked really well however it was a lot more difficult then I exacted.

Why Dubai-Based Handbag Label HALM Should Be On Your Radar

On a blisteringly cold day in late November, we went behind the pink door at Yorkville’s Cabine to meet with Hanna Ransjö and Hannah Louise Brewer, the duo behind handbag label HALM. Having flown in from Dubai (where “winter” sits around 23 degrees celsius), it was a stark change from their office in the city’s Design District. But as Ransjö  (the founder and creative director of the brand) tell us, she loves Canada. “I’m not just saying that. I came here two years ago for heli-skiing and I felt like I was in Europe. The people know what they want, they have style and an independence. I love the fact that people here are paired back but in an elegant way and they still have an incredibly, cute twist to it.”

Nicholas Mellamphy’s Cabine is the first North American location to have HALM bags on the ground. “The main thing is to align yourself with the right people,” she says adding that teaming up with Nicholas “just felt right.” The space, which is by appointment only, allows for the brand story to be told in a more genuine way, says Ransjö – something which is incredibly important to the founder as it allows for the messaging around sustainability (each bag is produced in limited quantities to minimize waste, for example) and quality (the bags feature materials from Italy, France and Switzerland) to be communicated genuinely. “[The key message for us] is that our bags are super special – you’re carrying a bag that’s been lovingly made and has only been made in a maximum of 50. It’s also a bag that, because of the soft leather, really takes on your personality and how you wear it.” Ransjö says that some people comment on the prices of the bags being high for a new brand (styles start at approximately CAD$900), however she says there’s a simple explanation for this: “It’s because we’ve chosen the top, quality materials. Plus, everything is limited edition.”

Brewer (the design and project manager) adds that they deliberately avoid branding collections seasonally (i.e. summer or fall) – “We always try to say trans-seasonal, and each following collection has been designed to complement the previous collection so you can build on top of one another and add in elements from one collection to another.” Plus, they keep their shape options limited deliberately. “You’re sending the message that what you had before wasn’t good enough,” explains Ransjö. Interestingly, Brewer says the inspiration for the shape of the bags actually came from the menswear market. “We did so much research on the men’s market actually. We focused on men’s bags, rather than women’s because we wanted these really clean lines, a minimalist [feel], and [the pieces to be] a little more contemporary rather than everything rounded.” As a result, some of the styles have proven popular with both men and women.

At the end of each month, Ransjö tells us that they release special pieces under the sub-brand Ethos by Halm which have been crafted using surplus leather from earlier designs. As such, these pieces are incredibly limited. “We might only be able to do one or two, so they are super unique,” she explains.

We ask whether or not they would consider using a leather substitute in the bags, to which Ransjö says, “The only leather substitute I would use is velvet, and I have actually looked into plant-based leather. I would never use a plastic because I don’t believe this is where we want to go.”

As for who the HALM customer is, Ransjö says her guiding principle when designing is this: “You should make somebody from the twenties to the nineties feel like they could wear the bag. It should be practical and beautiful.” She adds, “But practical doesn’t have to be boring.” All of the bags are designed in colour, with no black bags appearing in the main line collections. “The reason why I don’t want to do a black bag is because the colours come out so much more beautifully. I also feel like it’s a confident woman today, you don’t only need to wear a black bag.”

The woven straps that adorn the bags are a particular design highlight – not only are they beautiful, and a brand identifier, they have also been extensively tested by the HALM team to ensure the elasticity offers the perfect amount of support when worn on the shoulder. Plus, these can be swapped out for different colours to personalize your look.

3 Ways Your Next Party Should be Eco-friendly, and Why.

It’s no new fact that climate change is, in fact, real. And that our plastic consumption rates are off the charts, especially in this small sunny island of Singapore, where the amount of waste we produce per person is disproportionate to how much waste is being cleared off. But, I get you. Being environmental-friendly is tough, and it requires effort and time, and you’re a working adult, a parent, and so busy caring for those around you that caring for the environment doesn’t seem to be in your capacity. What if I told you that being environmentally-friendly required no extra effort, and could even be easier on your pockets? I know this dilemma always comes up when planning parties — what’s the best balance of convenience in planning a party and still keeping it as environmentally-friendly as possible? Honestly speaking, it’s a lot easier than it sounds, and it’s bound to make your party even better; a win-win situation! Here’s how: 

Minimal and Favourable Serve-ware

Switch to paper serve-ware instead of sticking to plastic. Not only do paper disposables contain a smaller amount of plastic, they also tend to be sold at cheaper prices, and offer a variety of designs that plastic disposables don’t. It’s so much easier to customise your party with designed plates, cups and bowls as opposed to plain ones, which are usually which plastic versions come in, especially if you’re decorating this party for a kids’ party. While there are coloured plastic plates available commercially, they’re no competition to paper serve-ware with actual designs of various colours. 

The Essentials

Napkins, plates, bowls, cups, spoons, and forks. These are the essentials you would need in party that involved food and drinks. The Extras

We don’t really use straws at home, so buying straws just for them to be used once and thrown away seems like a waste. Plus, unless your party has some real fancy food, knives are usually not needed. Stick to the essentials! Not only will they be used more in that case, you won’t have an insane amount of disposables left-over after your party. Not only are you reducing your trash later on, you’re also helping the Earth and making your shopping list more manageable :)

Reusable Decorations

I see my friends making this mistake often — buying new pieces of extravagant decorations that they are unlikely to reuse… ever. It either gets tossed out, or just clutters their home. Plus, some decorations don’t come cheap. Decorations are important, though, and help to create the vibe of the party, and bring it together. However, instead of having to purchase everything from scratch, there are affordable, carbon-friendly ways of ensuring your party remains amazing. 

From Previous Parties

If there are any decorations that you think you could use from your previous parties, use them! They may not be in the right colour, or might be missing a few elements, but that just takes a trip to the stationery store and an art-and-crafts session to upgrade whatever’s available to you. Try your best to unleash your creativity, and don’t be bound by the original design of a piece of a decoration. Your idea might provide you with a beautiful decoration ornament that you might not be able to get anywhere else. 

From Family/Friends

Borrow from your friends! Being in my 21st year, I’ve seen the same decorations being passed down from one mutual friend to another, and have spent my time putting up the same decorations in various different settings. And yet, these don’t take away from your party at all. (In fact, most of your guests probably wouldn’t even realise.) Because other than the mutually-shared decorations, each party has its unique point that would make your party just yours. This reduces the support given to one-use decorations, and therefore indirectly reduces production of these items and lessens your carbon footprint. Plus, no clutter after your party! Just pass it back to the friend you borrowed your items from, or pass it along to the next friend who has a party. 

From Online Platforms

If you really can’t get your hands on specific pieces you would like, turn to rental and second-hand ornaments before purchasing these. There are an incredible amount of rental avenues available, including platforms like Carousell. Some even offer put-up and tear-down of these items, especially if they’re huge or extensive items like a dessert table or a photo-booth. You can even check the quality of these items before buying. Not only do these online platforms allow you to have a wider range of choices, they also save you some money, which you can redistribute to other aspects of the party (or save up!). 

DIY

Have scrap material lying around your house? Newspapers, aluminium foils, old CDs, used coloured paper? All of these can be used to create various pieces of decorations; “Happy Birthday” signs, streamers, little shapes to stick around the venue, you name it. There really is no right-or-wrong with this, and you have the liberty to do anything you want! What’s better? You didn’t make too many extra purchases, saved money, and have a bunch of decorative pieces you can use for your next party (or lend to a friend)!

Mindful Invitations

Obviously, e-Cards would be the most eco-friendly option, but they just don’t feel as personal and intimate as physical invitations do. Moreover, it’s not like you’re sending out invitations every other day, and special occasions deserve special treatment! The icing on top of the cake is that Revel’s cards are FSC approved (which basically certifies these paper products as eco-friendly). 

Make These Useful

Instead of just sending out invites, you could also make these RSVPs — making these more than one-use paper products. It also makes for a cool way for you and your attendees to get excited for the party! You could also slip in a few tattoos or stickers for them to keep till party day, making it a special entrance gift. 

I’ve seen weddings give out reusable straws and cutleries to their guests; n extremely eco-friendly setting would include reusable straws, non-disposable cutleries, and/or completely reused decorative elements. However, it’s important to understand that purchasing such high-cost items for consumers who might not use them creates even more wastage. On the other hand, working towards simply reducing your carbon waste (instead of completely eliminating it) might be more feasible for you and your audience, without the removal of convenience from your party. After all, parties and party-planning can be exhaustive, and you don’t really want to increase your workload. That being said, with the few steps above, you can not only be more environmentally-aware, you can also reduce the items on your to-do list, save costs and save your time.

Studio culture Techniques and Processes

Blank Paint

Black paint is an art piece I created experimenting with abstraction and the material wall filler. This piece was all about my experimentation with materials I have never used or consider using before. Wall filler paste is not a common media what many people use, however I have come to realisation this product is very good. The thick paste is easy to manipulate when its soft and it takes an hour to dry. Once it is dried it hardens giving a 3D thick textured look which I really like. The bright block colour of white is very astonishing. I will be using this product to further experiment in my future work.

To create this, I started off with a plain blanc canvas board which I painted black which will be the colour of the background. I used the wall filler paste straight as it came as I found the white colour breathe taking against the black background. Using a palette knife, I scrapped in the middle of the canvas across in a line which created two mixtures of textures. The smooth texture which the palette knife created and the thick sharp like texture which build up around the palette knife when getting the smooth thin layer. I used the white palette knife to incorporate into the piece. I stuck it on the end of the wall paste to create the illusion of someone holding the palette knife mid-way creating the piece. This idea was inspired by an artist called Jean Pauldonadini who I discovered with this page on Instagram.

Blank Painting – Further Development

After creating my first piece I wanted to know how it would look like with colour colours so I decided to further develop my work and I created another piece using the same process. However, this time I decided to use acrylic paint to add a colour on the wall paste. Doing this I found out that acrylic paint does work well painted on the paste. I used the colour blue as I have a special eye for the colour blue. I thought it would be a nice contrast between the black background.

However, this piece didn’t look as good as my first one. Yes, the colour did go on well but the pure white against the background worked so much better. From this experiment I have learned wall paste is a great media to work with as it is cheap and dries fast. Acrylic paint works well.

Mini scrapes

The mini scrapes are the base of all my experiments. This was the start of all my pieces I have created. To create these, they are all based on mixing PVA glue with other medias which is then scraped across on paper using a palette knife. The unique shapes that appear on the paper without any guidance on what the outcome will look like. The mystery of each scrape intrigues me wanted to create more and more.

With PVA glue and acrylic

First experiment started with mixing PVA glue and acrylic paint which created thick paint with I explored scrapping across the paper producing new shapes and different thicknesses with variety of layers.

With sand and acrylic

Another technique I created is mixing PVA glue with sand and acrylic paint. The same created really trough texture when its dried and the acrylic paint is to add colours for a range of colours and shades. The PVA glue creates a thicker substance which helps me with more texture for an abstract piece.

Scrapes

Further developing the mini scrapes, I created the scrapers by dragging out the scrape and experimenting with painting the background with the same colours and different colours. With PVA bring one of the main materials in this mix, it dries like thin rubber which really intrigues me. I also explored ripping off the glue when its dried taking the first layer of the paint on the paper leaving behind an abstract shape creating bright contrast between the colours.

Pink gone wrong

Pink gone wrong is technique I am created using cement. I choose cement purely because of the thickness I can manipulate and how cheap it is. Because I feature best with texture and the thickness, I use a large amount at once making cement the perfect media to use. It air dries hard but keeps the shape which is one of the reasons why I enjoy using this technique. To create this piece, I used board canvas to paint on as its strong and sturdy.

Glue container lids

With all the experimenting with PVA I have come to find that I love the finish it has when it dries, the rubbery fell when you peel it off something. I found the easiest way to peel glue off was from peeling it off plastic. Plastic lids are the best way for me to explore which have turned out to be my best process of making work.

I first started using mixed acrylic paint with glue which poured onto a standard container lid. The glue dries up and you can see when you pull the glue off that the marks on the worn-down lid appear which makes the pieces that deeper and more unique. All the marks that have shown up with the variety of lids I used creates a story within the paint, which is what draws me in to use this technique more.

To further develop the glue lids, I explored more on the materials I can mix with the glue and acrylic paint for example, sand. I have manipulated sand in my work as it gives me the rough texture, I’m so fond of. My speciality is working in impasto and large scale so I tend to use a lot of amount of materials at once and over time I have found I love to use sand. It is a great medium to use as its affordable and when mixed with PVA glue and acrylic paint, it creates this sick substance I love. To include this more into my work I used sand in the lids.

Firstly, I mixed sand and PVA glue together which I poured on the lid and added paint in variety of colours to mix in with the glue. Using materials that are really different to each other it creates a mixture of textures once all has dried. The sand leaves a rough brittle texture but some parts where there is only glue has dried, it is really soft and smooth.

With the knowledge I had and the experiments I had made, I decided to produce loads of the glue lids to see all the marks and designs that show by manipulating the colours and textures.

Some glue lids I used a thicker layer of glue to make more them sustainable. I started off with one layer of glue which I left to dry so I was able to play with pure acrylic paint on top and then added another layer of glue once it was dried. The contrast between the pure acrylic and the dry clear glue was very intriguing how I can manipulate the paint by trapping within layers of glue.  

Jellyfish

Jellyfish was created using only thread. I combined 4 different threads together to create this as I used slightly different shades of blue for allowing to make shadows and light instead of having one colour blue. I used the two main colours of blue for the base of the body and used the darker blue thread for the shadow underneath the head of the jellyfish to give it a more realised look which did really help. I used thin strands of white thread for the top of the head to indicate there is light reflecting which also makes it that much more realistic.

I did start working on the jellyfish on a primed board which I painted in advance of the colour white so I have a base to start messing with the threat to create the figure of my jellyfish. To keep the thread firm on the board I used PVA glue to mix with each thread piece and glued it on the board. This has worked really well however it was a lot more difficult then I exacted.

Ink bubbles

Ink bubbles was an experiment I did using straws and acrylic paint. This method is really quick and easy to create and it fitted perfectly with my water pollution theme.

This technique includes plastic straws, acrylic paint or ink, card and washing up liquid. To create the first thing, you do is mix your paint with a little water and some washing up liquid, this is what gives the paint the soapy texture that we want. When it had been stirred using a plastic straw you blow in the paint creating these overflowing bubbles. Then place the paper over the bubbles to take a print of them and allow them to dry.
