A weekend vacation to Jekyll Island
This is a sponsored post, but all opinions are my own. :)
Only a five hour drive from Atlanta, Zach and I hopped in the car with the dogs and headed to Jekyll Island for a long weekend getaway. Being our first time there, we used the Jekyll Island website to plan our trip. Although the island is small, it’s packed with plenty to do that will keep you going the whole time. It’s extremely clean, quiet (perhaps because we went before school let out for the summer), and one of the most dog friendly places I’ve ever been - woohoo!
We stayed in a spacious suite at the ocean-front Holiday Inn Resort. Our balcony overlooked the ocean so every morning we spent some time waking up to the sound of waves hitting the shore. The room came with two queen sized beds, a kitchenette (full-sized fridge, microwave, stove top, and sink), two tv’s, and the living room had pull-out couch. If cooking is more your vibe, this is the way to go. You won’t find any big-box grocery stores on the island, so you may want to bring some groceries with you. You can also pick up a variety of groceries and local provisions at the nearby Jekyll Market or hit a larger grocery story right before the entrance to the island. Parking was easy, and the property featured several gas fire pits, a kids’ playground, a gorgeous pool, cabana sitting areas, a coffee and martini bar, fitness center, several beach access points, bike rentals, and a dog-friendly restaurant called “Beach House” on site.
We are the type of people who like to stay active on vacation and bring our dogs as much as possible so we tried to fit in as much in as possible and adjusted as necessary considering there was a bit of rain for a few days while we were there. First on the list was taking our dogs to the beach! It was drizzling when we got in on Friday afternoon but after we settled in we took the dogs out to the beach right outside of our hotel. They LOVED it and we ran up and down the beach with them. This was also the day we realized the tides change quite noticeably on the island which was unique to see.
Saturday was filled with sunshine so we hit up the Summer Waves Waterpark first thing in the morning and checked out all of the slides! That afternoon we ventured around Beach Village which is a small shopping center featuring several restaurants, shops, and Jekyll Market. Lastly we caught the beautiful sunset while exploring Driftwood Beach. This beach is dog-friendly and filled with the remains of fallen trees due to many years of erosion. It’s one of the most photogenic places we went and was voted one of America’s “Ten Most Romantic Beaches.”
Sunday stormed so our hotel lost power a few times so it was PERFECT that we had tickets to go behind- the- scenes at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Because they take care of animals, they have generators  to continuously power the hospital. Although the general entry gives you an inside look at turtle care and is open rain or shine, I HIGHLY recommend the behind-the-scenes tour. We happened to be in the vet area when they brought in a turtle who needed blood work done which was incredible to witness! You also get to see where the food is kept, see the other turtles not out on public view, and ask all of the questions you want - it was truly an incredible thing to experience. During the lighter drizzle times, we walked around the Historic District admiring the beautiful historic buildings and large trees covered in Spanish Moss. That evening, when the weather had cleared up, we took a spontaneous sunset dolphin tour with hilarious husband-and-wife duo tour guides. We saw a ton of birds, learned all about the ecosystem of the island, learned a little history, and of course saw dolphins at sunset!
Knowing the weather on Monday was going to be incredibly sunny, but we had to check out by 11, we woke up early to take full advantage of the time we had left. We finally rented bikes and took advantage of the islands 25 miles of paved bike paths. These paths almost always keep you separate from the road allowing for you to venture out on a bike with the family in a very safe way. This made for a unique and beautiful way to see the island! Of course, we ended our trip with one last visit to the beach with the pups and said goodbye to a wonderful weekend getaway.
Below are a few bullet lists for dog friendly places, activities we did and didn’t do, and a few extra tips!
Although not a full list, here are a few dog friendly places that we visited while on Jekyll Island:
The Holiday Inn Resort
Oceanview Beach Park of the Holiday Inn Resort
Driftwood Beach
Walking through the beautiful Historic District
The expansive bike path is also shared by dog walkers and runners alike
Sunrise Grille Restaurant
Beach House Restaurant
Tortuga Jacks Mexican Restaurant
To note, there are plenty of other places to eat that have outside seating, but because they aren’t full service restaurants it would require you to either tie up your dog outside while you go in, or have an additional person to wait outside while you go inside to order. To name a few: all of the places inside of the Jekyll Market including Hibiscus Cafe, Boardwalk Deli, The Love Shack BBQ, and A Sweet Shop Named Sprinkles. Fuse for froyo, The Westin Cafe for Starbucks coffee, and Red Bug Motors Pizza and Pub. My recommendation is to call ahead if you aren’t sure.
Activities that kept us moving and a few others we didn’t get to:
Summer Waves Waterpark
Driftwood Beach
Biking
Georgia Sea Turtle Center
Dolphin tours
Stand-up Paddle Boarding/Kayaking
Mini golf and/or regular golf
Tennis
Mosaic, the Jekyll Island Museum
Horseback riding
A few extra tips:
Heads up, there is a parking pass that you must purchase when you first arrive.
Bring bug spray or purchase the local spray called “No Natz” found at several local stores.
Dogs must be leashed at all times and the leashes can’t be longer than 16ft. So happy about this so other people’s dogs can’t just come up to yours and cause a potentially dangerous situation.
Dogs are allowed on beaches except South Beach between South Dunes Picnic Area and 2,000' northeast of St. Andrews Sound Picnic Area, to protect nesting shore birds..
Be careful about walking out to the sand bars on the beach as the tide rolls in and out 8 feet every six and a half hours. Also, plan your beach visits accordingly as I had no clue about the tide and there are times when the water completely covers the sand. Mother Nature is so cool!
The water is not clear, but it’s not because of pollution. In fact, the water is very nutrient dense which allows for all of the thriving wildlife!
If you’re a fellow lover of Jekyll Island and have any recommendations that we missed, please leave them in the comments below so myself and others can enjoy during their next trip!

Hi love! I have a game, if you feel like doing it. So, you know how fan I am of crack ships, so what if I tell you some weird pairings and you tell me your thoughts, headcanons or why the could/couldn't work? Here they go: NejiTema (Neji/Temari). DaruHina (Darui/Hinata). YahIno (Pain!Yahiko/Ino). KankuTen (Kankuro/Tenten). KisaSaku (Kisame/Sakura). TsuIno (Tsunade/Inoichi). Ok, i went overboard with the list. Sorry!
Sorry this took an absurd amount of time, I am not very good at headcanons (I am going to do my best though!)
NejiTema:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Temari would keep Neji up all night with her need for constant affection - Temari loves giving hugs (after being raised around two of the best boys, she has SO much love to offer) - Neji remarkably loves to cuddle, he blushes like crazy too- Temari and Neji love visiting hot springs and talking about training (because these two work SO hard, that they would literally be the ones to talk about WORK while on VACATION)- Neji is absolutely terrible at flirting, to the point where Temari makes fun of him for not being able to flirt- Temari would be the one to propose because Neji would be too absorbed in his pride - On their wedding day, Neji would hold Temari’s hand for the first time and flush pink in front of literally everyone and passing out, resulting in Temari having to carry him from the alter, refusing help from her brothers(I know everything seems happy go lucky but as my final ruling; this couple ultimately would not work due to their brash / dominant personalities frequently clashing)
DaruHina:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- They would frequently walk on the beach every day, hand in hand, content with silence - Hinata makes coffee every morning for Darui who doesn’t even life coffee or being up early, yet he still accepts it and drinks his coffee anyway- Hinata even goes so far as to count each cream she adds to his coffee, to make it perfect every time- Darui surprisingly holds it DOWN in the kitchen! My boy whips up dish after dish! - Hinata surprisingly….eats like a TRUE CHAMPION! My girl can EAT lord have mercy- Darui often surprises Hinata during her mini training sessions to offer her flowers (he’s incredibly affectionate)- Darui’s number one obsession /addiction is working out. He can bench press for miles- Hinata watches him frequently while he lifts weights and jogs- They join a gym together and he becomes her personal trainer—how freakin’ rad!- He encourages her during the training sessions, making her work harder not to look “uncool” in front of him, pushing herself harder and harder to be able to keep up with him, eventually to surpass him- The two of them bring out the best in one another without having to change a single thing (As a last notation, this couple would work in the long haul, their timid and passive natures would complement one another)
YahIno:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Ino plays frequent pranks on Yahiko, resulting in them having frequent matches with one another
- Ino surprises Yahiko with flowers every single day; surprisingly Yahiko knows a lot about flowers despite growing up in a village that never stops raining
- Ino would style Yahiko’s hair in different styles, her favorite being two tiny pony-tails- Yahiko actually ha as feminine side; he would paint Ino’s nails and even attempts to brush her hair- The two of them would be absolute geeks in the kitchen! Yahiko would fail epically at making simple mac n’ cheese and Ino would have to be the one to take over, sending him to clean dishes instead- Yahiko is a neat freak, he often complains about Ino’s hair in the shower drain and her infinite amount of clothes laying around their room under piles and piles of shoes - Ino decorates their apartment with flowers in every corner she can reach- They adopt a dog- They adopt TWO dogs!!- Ino eventually has to beg Yahiko to stop adopting dogs because he keeps bringing more and more of them home- The two of them would take goofy selfies together while sitting on their couch in their pajamas at 3 in the afternoon (This could would be so goddamn perfect that they would make everyone disgustingly jealous)
KankuTen:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- TenTen uses Kankuro’s puppets for target practice; much to his disapproval
- Kankuro is surprisingly a very good cook and often makes TenTen’s lunches while she’s out training- Kankuro talks a whole lot when they are alone together; mostly about Gaara- TenTen makes everything an adventure; she drags Kankuro through mountains and forests looking for new targets for practice - Kankuro is the “best friend” guy in the relationship, letting TenTen vent when she’s frustrated and massaging her feet when she’s had a rough day - TenTen would be the “dominant” one in the relationship because she’s not used to being waited on and pampered- Kankuro is actually very insecure of his appearance when not wearing his makeup, despite the constant pleading from TenTen to remove it- TenTen considers picnics to be high class dates and Kankuro has no problem with this (Ultimately as my final say; this couple would not work, simply for the fact they are just way too opposite and introverted when it comes to s/o’s)
KisaSaku:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Sakura actually cannot swim, therefore she sits by the beach while Kisame floats in the ocean - They bond over the fact they both were at one point obsessed with a Uchiha (Kisame with Itachi / Sakura with Sasuke)- Sakura’s brash nature conflicts with Kisame’s quiet nature, resulting in Sakura constantly pummeling him - Samahada favors Sakura’s chakra over Kisame’s; which is the basis of most of their arguments - Sakura often refers to him as “fish out of water” in a joking sort of way- Kisame has a very hard time kissing Sakura, with his shark teeth and all- Kisame’s fashion sense usually makes people double look them in public because he doesn’t believe in shirts (This couple would not work due to the fact that Sakura has very little in common with Kisame and Kisame is more attached to water than anything else)
TsuInoi:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Tsnuade gets very defensive when Inoichi starts telling people her age in public - Her biggest fear is him reading her mind and knowing about how often she’s thinking about him- Inoichi is a heavy drinker; resulting in the two of them having a blast when drunk - He often gives Tsnuade flowers inside of liquor bottles- Inoichi brings Ino around, often joking about her Tsnuade could’ve been her mother- He’s extremely good listener, after the night of Jiraiya’s death he stayed up with her while she cried herself to sleep in his arms- Tsnuade is such a terrible cook that if she doesn’t go broke from gambling, it’s because she’s broke from eating out- Inoichi wins every gambling event due to his mind reading powers; making Tsnuade internally jealous (This couple would ultimately work out. Their personalities are not conflicting and both of them would take the time to understand one another.)

The province has a land area of 3,131.52 square kilometers or 1,209.09 square miles.

The province's original inhabitants were the Bukidnons and the Manobos but they were driven into the interior when Visayas settlers arrives. Misamis used to be a part of the diocese of Cebu. In 1818, it became a corregimento comprised of four divisions: Misamis, including Iligan, Dapitan, Cagayan, and Catarman, on the island of Camiguin. At the close of the Spanish era, Misamis constituted one of the seven districts of Mindanao. On November 2, 1929, Legislative Act No. 3537 divided Misamis into two provinces. However, it was not until November 28, 1939 that the division was formally implemented under Act No. 3777.

5 Ways to Get Fido Moving

The post 5 Ways to Get Fido Moving by Paul J. Kearney appeared first on Dogster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren't considered public domain. So what can you do besides change your dog’s diet to help your dog lose weight? Just like with humans, exercise can help. Here are five fun and easy ways to exercise with your dog! These can be tailored and adjusted depending on your dog’s fitness level.
Photo: Getty Images
Biking
If you can ride a bike and have a proper bike side attachment (Like the BICE WalkyDog,) securely connected to a harness, you can bicycle with nearly any dog. You can bicycle slowly, at a moderate pace or even enjoy short bursts of speed safely with your dog.
This is a cool-weather activity, so think autumn and winter. Remember that dogs don’t sweat like humans. They only have two sets of sweat glands, plus their thermoregulation is affected in temperatures over 60 degrees Fahrenheit doing cardiovascular exercises, much like bicycling.
When starting out bicycling with your dog, keep the distance short, 1 to 3 miles, until you and your teammate work up (slowly) to 100 accumulated miles, then you can increase the amount of distance you do together. Always have water for your dog, take breaks, have fun. Dirt and grass trails are preferred, extended duration on pavement is not. In a short time, you and your dog could either be enjoying a nice day out biking and stopping at fun places or do a quick 3 miles in 30 minutes.
Things to note: Biking with puppies under 9 months of age is not advised at all. For young dogs, do only short and slow outings until they are over 18 months of age. Also, go only as fast as the slowest dog, including overweight and elderly dogs. They can still come bicycling with us, just with plenty of breaks at a slow pace, while doing short distances. Ensure that the return trip home is as fun as heading out on a bicycle adventure.

Swimming
Swimming is great for all dogs, as it is low-impact, full-body exercise. Dogs will need a personal flotation device depending on their age (very young or old), the environment in which they are swimming (where it is deep or has a current) or exposed to water for extended durations (where they will get tired, like a day on the water with family). Swimming can be done in any safe body of water that is clean, like swimming pools, rivers, bays, lakes and calm ocean waters. There are also water treadmills at canine hydrotherapy businesses that have exercise programs for dogs.

Flirt Pole
I love flirt poles. They are 6-foot long flexible poles with a 4-foot line going out to a lure or flag on the end. (Like Squishy Face Studio‘s Flirt Pole V2.) The idea is to move the lure at the end of the line around on the ground and have your dog engage with it — chasing and eventually capturing it. With younger dogs, older dogs and overweight dogs, make bigger loops with the line instead of short cuts and fast moves.
There is a quick learning curve to using this. Practice alone at first to keep the lure on the ground — spin around in a circle a couple of times first to get the hang of using one. Have something with you to trade up with your dog for when he does catch the lure. When he releases the lure, mark that with “drop it“ and then reward (which can be the continuance of play). A flirt pole is not a tug toy, so make sure the dog drops the lure before rewarding.
Photo: Getty Images
Sniffaris
Sniffaris are walks where your dog picks where to go — only, of course, if the environment and direction he chooses are safe. Like the name suggests, the idea is to stop and smell everything and anything that is safe to engage with. When I’m not walking with dogs from point A to point B, I’m allowing them to engage with safe things to smell. During sniffaris, I time them. After 30 or 45 minutes, I’ll start guiding us back toward our starting point. Most people are amazed at how a Sniffari will tire out their dogs. Being allowed to gather scent is a great thalamus workout (that’s the part of the brain that relays sensory information).
Photo: Getty Images
Mini Hikes
Mini-hikes are basically 3- to 5-plus mile walks. Instead of walking around your neighborhood, go somewhere special with a great trail, like a local county or state park, river or beach to experience waldeinsamkeit (the feeling of being one with nature), but with the added bonus of being with your dog(s).
For our dogs, exercise is vital, as is the experience shared with us. Exercise doesn’t need to be cardiovascular. Exercise can also incorporate enrichment-based mental stimulation into this important time spent with our dogs. Remember: If we engage the brain, we tire the body.

Living in Sydney for the last seven months has given us a chance to go on a few mini adventures, but since I haven’t updated the blog individually I’m going to back track!
Our first adventure was a day trip to Gledhill Falls and Palm Beach with our least favourite people Jo and Spencer, just kidding guys you’re the best haha. We found this waterfall on concreteplayground.com as one of the best waterfalls you can swim in near Sydney, after living there all through summer we realised our hot summer days were numbered. Greg made a makeshift handle to an existing rope swing that snapped mid jump and dunked him, definitely a fail. We chuckled at a small boy getting ready to leave with his family, he went through the whole process of drying his feet off, putting his socks on, then his shoes, before he realised that he was sitting on a rock surrounded by water in every direction haha, definitely something Greg would have done as a child! We jumped off rocks into the murky water but we couldn’t believe it when other people started leaping right off a 5 metre cliff of into the pool, it wasn’t that deep in places and was too dangerous for us!
Tumblr media
After drying off and having some lunch we headed over to Palm Beach and wandered along the beach before heading up to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse for the impressive view (It’s the lighthouse in the intro credits to ‘Home and Away’ if anyone watches that) I would definitely recommend a visit as it is very photogenic but quite a climb and you have to get lucky with parking.
Tumblr media
Our next trip was out to the blue mountains, about 3 hours west of Sydney, we visited there last year for a day so we wanted a chance to test out the car before our east coast trip and see more of the mountains.
We left straight after work and camped near the road side at Bulls Camp Reserve, thank God for the ‘wiki camps’ app as it was a great spot with toilets but was full of people! After a good nights rest we drove the rest of the way to the visitors centre in Blackheath and stopped at all of the stunning lookouts along the way. For our first walk we chose the Grand Canyon track (advised by the visitor centre) a path that took us down the steep sides of the hills, through a river valley and back up. We were super lucky with the weather, a little chilly but bright, blue skies painted with clouds made for epic photos, even though we had seen the range before it’s still amazing to see how the green trees change to blue in the distance. We learnt last year how the eucalyptus trees emanate the blue hue from evaporated oil droplets that mix with water and dust in the air, causing light to scatter leaving just the blue.
Tumblr media
We cooked a quick lunch, where we were joined by a hopeful magpie who tried his luck, before setting off on our walk. We knew the walk was about 3-4 hours and as we often stop for photo’s we expected it to be nearer 4, taking lots of water and some snacks we were on our way. It’s crazy how the temperature alternates from boiling hot when you’re out in the sun to surprisingly cold when you are right down in the rainforest valley. I also hadn’t anticipated quite how many steps there were going down into the rainforest, we constantly thought that we must be the bottom only to turn another corner to more steps down, looking it up now there are over 1200 steps, they aren’t necessarily very steep it was just the sheer amount. (Greg thought back to childhood walks with his mum and her catchphrase of “It’s not far” came to mind, when really it was miles!) The walk was beautiful, from sheer cliff drops to cascading waterfalls and meandering rivers that carved our path. We were very proud of ourselves managing only 3 hours to complete the walk even with lots of photo and snack breaks.
We drove the car up to Sunset Rock, a place I’d found on ‘wiki camps’, but when we arrived at the signposted destination we couldn’t work out where to go. The route to the area feels a bit like walking through someones back garden as there are a few houses dotted around without any real borders, we found the spot just in time and cuddled up to watch the sunset over the mountains. With front row seats on the edge of the rock (not right on the edge mum don’t worry), we had just one other person joining us, a Canadian photographer who (much to Greg’s envy) had brought her drone, we sat and watched as she flew it through the valley. The sky begin to shift from bright blues to green, yellow and red, the photographer (Kaitlyn) approached us and asked if we would be happy for her to take a picture of us! (Because we’re just so cute together) We were of course willing subjects and afterwards learnt that she had just finished travelling New Zealand and had almost finished her travels through Oz, soon to return home. Here’s a link to her incredible work and the photo she kindly took of us, thanks again!
Second night at camp we stayed at Mount York Campground, a pretty long road with various areas to camp in either with tents or in your car. We were pretty jealous of others who had warm fires burning as once the sun had disappeared the cold had set in so we cooked a quick dinner and jumped into bed.
In the morning we headed off early to the Jenolan Caves, there is only one route there from the Blue Mountains, a very windy road that reminded me of the Great Ocean road in Victoria, but instead of the ocean it was rainforest surrounding us. It’s always frustrating trying to accurately capture a steep gradient in a photo because it is just impossible, but believe me when I say you wouldn’t want to crash along those roads. We had sensibly booked our tour because a lot were fully booked all day, we arrived quite early so took the opportunity to go on a short walk up to the Devil’s Coach House Lookout, sadly there had been a landslide from the bad weather and we could only go up a little way. This was when I realised that our rainforest walk had taken it’s toll on my lazy legs and my calves were aching like never before, suffice to say I haven’t been making the most of our gym facilities and ‘leg day’ was about a year ago. Nothing cheered me up like seeing the beautiful view of the Blue Lake and I knew it was going to be a good day.
Tumblr media
Our tour to the River Cave was full, 25 people total, but this didn’t detract from the tour at all, we chose one of the hardest walks, of course, another 1298 steps including up two steep metal ladders, leg day again. There were beautiful limestone formations throughout but my favourite part was the stunning Pool of Reflections. It’s amazing to think how these were discovered by people bravely investigating dangerous places using just lamps and a pickaxe, and began to carve out the beginnings of the walkways that are now so spacious and easily accessible to the public.
Tumblr media
To finish our day we visited the Blue Lake, the name is hardly imaginative but it really is the bluest lake I’ve ever seen, the natural colour and beauty of this lake comes from the limestone grains in the water that scatter the light giving it the unreal colour.
Tumblr media
We couldn’t have been luckier with the weather as we jumped in our car to go on another walk it had started to spit and by the time we reached the road back to Blackheath the heavens had opened, at one point we watched a tree covered in autumnal leaves stripped clean by a gust of wind that I thought may blow the tree over! We called off our last walk and made our way home, luckily we did as the bank holiday traffic was horrendous.
Over the Easter weekend, we decided to make the most of the time off work and drive up to Coffs Harbour, 6 hours north of Sydney. We left on the Thursday night so we could make as much progress with the drive as possible and stopped overnight at a rest stop where it said no camping but nothing about sleeping in the car. I have found Australia to be very contradictory in this respect by telling you to stop if you’re tired, as well as every 2 hours but you can’t sleep in your car overnight.. Ridiculous, I understand if we set up camp for several nights that could be a problem but we never have any plans to do that. Anyway I’m glad we stopped here as when I went to the toilet, I was pleasantly surprised by a note offering me $5 because “God loves you”, there really are some good people in the world. Up bright and early we headed to Coff’s Harbour via a river town off the highway to cook breakfast, I was a little apprehensive of a huge flock of geese eying me up but it turned out they were waiting on an old mate to come and feed them, bless him. The main attraction in Coffs Harbour is the big banana, we hadn’t realised that it’s also an amusement park, it has a banana museum, go-karting, a toboggan, huge slides, an indoor ski slope and a water park! We took the standard tourist photos and treated ourselves to an extortionate frozen chocolate banana before wandering around the gift shop.
Tumblr media
We headed over to Park Beach for lunch and a much deserved rest, I couldn’t believe the size of the beach it was awesome, although Sydney beaches are nice I honestly don’t think you can compare them to the stretches of open space like these. We finished our evening hiking over Muttonbird Island and watched the sunset over Coffs Harbour in complete peace as the waves crashed beneath us it couldn’t have been more perfect. We were very lucky to see some Muttonbird fledglings learning to fly, they were so cute and fluffy.
We drove inland into Dorrigo National Park for the night and set up at a camp spot where we took some beautiful photos of the stars, I love being able to stargaze, if the weather is warm enough then I’d like to sleep under them sometime!
With no alarms set, we still woke up reasonably early and drove out to the visitors centre which had a skywalk lookout that turned my legs to jelly, we took a hike for a two hour round trip to Crystal Falls and it was definitely worth going to. The trees along the way were enormous giving us shade under the canopies and the waterfall itself was stunning, nature never ceases to amaze me. Back at the Skywalk we were enticed into buying an ‘English cream tea’ oh dear Australia, you do need a lesson on the difference between a cake and a scone… Disappointed.
Tumblr media
Leaving Coffs Harbour we stopped off at The Honey Place in Urunga where we tried a few samples but have yet to find the true delicacy that is chocolate honey (something we’ve had before). They also had a working bee hive between two bits of glass where you could hear them all busy at work.
We finished our day off at Shelly beach in Nambucca Heads watching the sunset and stupidly decided to have our first outdoor shower, it was absolutely freezing and in hindsight we should have done this in the day when it was still sunny!
After a good rest in our car, we arrived at Port Macquarie visitor centre and took the advice of one of the volunteers to take a short walk along the water front where people have been coming for years to paint the rocks. It was so cool to see the different artwork, some families or friends had been making the annual pilgrimage to put their mark upon their rock, and it was nice to see everyone respected them, no graffiti over anyone else’s work.
Port Macquarie is known for its koala hospital which I couldn’t wait to go to, although it was sad to read about their injuries or illnesses it’s always reassuring to know there are volunteers to help them. The main reasons for the koalas being in the hospital were car accidents and diseases like chlamydia but some of the most horrifying injuries were burns victims from the wildfires that so badly affect Australia. The hospital lets visitors see some of their long term residents who will never be able to return to the wild and has an educational room for everyone. One of the koalas was a repeat resident known for harassing the female koalas and kept catching chlamydia, much to his disgust at first he became a permanent resident but apparently is now settled with his routine.
Tumblr media
For our last day we made the most of the beautiful beaches and relaxed knowing that we’d be back to the work grind the following day.
Tumblr media
One of the crazy things about Australia is of course the wildlife, I still love seeing the huge Goannas that come from the bush when they hear the public BBQs turn on, sadly a lot of people are quite intimidated by them or will ignorantly feed them but to me they are magnificent creatures.
Tumblr media
We took a short walk up to Harry’s Lookout where a kookaburra posed for us, it was the closest I’d been to a wild one, he was so cute with his big fluffy head and didn’t seem bothered by us at all. We also took a trip up to Tacking Point lighthouse for a few photos and spotted a para glider at another lookout getting ready to take off so we stayed to watch which was pretty awesome!
We have had a fantastic time in Sydney over the past 7 months and there are a lot of stories that will have to wait for another day. Stay tuned for photos and a video coming soon when I have access to better internet! If you made it this far.. Thank you for reading
Much Love
Shades of Green and Blue, our adventures in New South Wales Living in Sydney for the last seven months has given us a chance to go on a few mini adventures, but since I haven't updated the blog individually I'm going to back track!

A California Road Trip with Lost Campers
Wandering Earl
I shall introduce you to “Caitlin”. Now I don’t know the story behind the name but that was the mini-campervan my girlfriend and I were given for our California road trip when we went to pick up our rental from Lost Campers USA in Los Angeles.
Clean and ready when we arrived, we were given a ‘tour’ of the vehicle, signed some paperwork and within minutes the Lost Campers staff had us on our way. Caitlin would now be our home for the following 6 days.
With a comfy mattress, an interior table and sink and everything from an awning to outdoor chairs and tables, a cooler, a propane stove, cooking equipment and storage compartments, we had everything we could possibly need for our adventure. We were excited to get started and as we turned out of the parking lot near LAX and onto Aviation Boulevard, we knew that traveling in such a van was a wise decision for a budget California road trip.
And this is what happened once that California road trip began…
Day 1: Los Angeles to Morro Bay
It wasn’t long into our adventure, about eight minutes to be precise, when we agreed to have a coffee stop. And you know how it goes, with all the traffic in LA and difficulty finding a parking spot, this turned into a much longer break than expected.
Eventually though, with coffee in hand, we got back out on the road, meandered through the streets of Santa Monica and onto the Pacific Coast Highway.
We were feeling good. We were feeling clean (this would change quickly). And we were feeling energized. We rolled along, passing Malibu and Ventura, until we reached the town of Santa Barbara in time for lunch. We ate at the Santa Barbara Public Market, an indoor food hall on the corner of West Victoria and Chapala Streets that was a great spot for a fresh meal (we went with poke bowls, highly recommended), before stretching our legs on a long walk down State Street. And then, like true campervan novices, we spent an hour in the Ralph’s supermarket trying to figure out what kind of supplies we should buy.
Bananas, wine, granola bars, water, tea and mandarins seemed like all we needed in the end.
In the early evening we pulled into Pismo Beach and went for a walk through the historic, yet tiny, downtown and beachfront, not quite attracted by the shops and restaurants enough to stick around longer but satisfied with our first glimpse of the beach.
We continued north and upon arrival in Morro Bay, decided to pull into a campground for the night. The only problem was that all of the campgrounds were completely full, leaving us no choice but to try and find a quiet spot to park, and hide, our van for the night.
Twenty minutes later we found that spot.
I backed the van up into a corner at the very end of a quiet road along the beach, where we were hidden by a huge pickup truck parked in front of us. And from this location we enjoyed dinner and a bottle of wine in front of the ocean before falling asleep, and eventually waking up to, the sound of the waves, all from the comfort of our campervan’s bed.
Day 2: Seals, Hearst Castle and Big Sur
Awake and ready to go by 8:00am, we stopped for coffee and breakfast at the Luna Coffee Bar in the quiet village of Cayucos before continuing along the coast. After 30 minutes we reached a turnoff that lead to an ‘elephant seal viewing point’.
And then we almost missed seeing the elephant seals. I made the brilliant suggestion to walk along a quiet path to the left, from where we soon saw 3 small seals lying on the sand off in the distance. Luckily, when we returned to the van, my girlfriend suggested that we walk the other way for a moment and sure enough, that’s when we came upon the dozens of massive elephant seals that this area is known for.
It wasn’t even 9:30am when we reached our second stop of the day – the Hearst Castle.
For years I’ve wanted to visit this bizarre mansion built in the early 20th century by newspaper magnate Willian Hearst and now that I have visited, I would recommend it to anyone on a California road trip in this area. We took the one hour Upper Rooms tour with one of the best tour guides we’ve ever encountered and we then spent some time on our own wandering around the expansive gardens and surreal indoor pool.
The ‘castle’ is too crazy and everything from the hilltop location to the zebras (yes, zebras) to the architecture to the ancient artifacts to the interior design to the stories behind every room simply cannot be imagined without being there. Awesome place.
Next up was a subpar Sunday lunch in the nearby town of Cambria. And then…
First, let me state that despite not having a real plan for our road trip, there was actually one place that we really didn’t want to miss – the Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur. My girlfriend is a huge fan of his writing and I’m slowly learning more and more about him and his works.
While located only 30 miles up the road from Cambria, due to the landslides earlier this year that knocked out a couple of bridges along the coast, a long 100+ mile detour was now required to get in and out of Big Sur. We still planned to make the trip though.
So, after our lunch, while sitting in the campervan browsing the internet for a few minutes, I suddenly discovered that the Henry Miller Memorial Library had revised their opening hours because of the drop in tourism after the landslides. They were now only open Thursday to Sunday, 11am – 6pm.
It was Sunday. It was 3:01pm. According to Google Maps, we were 2.5 hours away with the detour.
And off we went…Route 46 over to Route 101 and up to the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road which then took us on a 60 mile adventure through wine country, an eerily quiet stretch of US Army-owned land, the alluring depths of the Los Padres National Forest and the towering Santa Lucia Mountain Range, with its dozens of dangerous turns and lack of barriers protecting you from a long fall of a cliff.
It was a wild detour, gorgeous and energizing, yet slightly nauseating, especially given our time constraints.
We pulled into the Henry Miller Library at 5:35pm.
I’m not sure what was more exciting, being at the library or the journey to get there but we thoroughly enjoyed the 25 minutes we spent wandering around the building, speaking with staff, flipping through books and soaking up the atmosphere.
And then we left.
Our dinner that night consisted of sandwiches bought from the only open shop in the area, the Big Sur Deli, which we ate at the best view point we could possibly find.
After dinner, we pulled into the corner of a small parking lot back near the Big Sur Deli, where we promptly passed out on the bed in our van, quite satisfied with the happenings of this lengthy day.
Day 3: Big Sur and the Middle of Nowhere
The second landslide was just north of where we slept and so on this day, we had no choice but to head back south. We took our time, stopping at several view points along the way until we reached the tiny community of Plaskett. And wherever we stopped, we always had the spot to ourselves, something I never imagined possible along this famous route.
After a lunch overlooking the coast (doesn’t get old!) and a drive up to a mountaintop hermitage that turned out to be closed, we turned back onto that Nacimiento-Fergusson Road from the day before, also the only route out of Big Sur.
But this time, we would do things a little differently. Once at the top of the mountains, we decided to get off the paved road and head onto a dirt track called the Coast Ridge Trail. We were’t exactly sure but looking at Google maps, this route appeared to offer a nice loop that would end up right where we wanted to be later in the day.
Here’s how that went:
We entered extremely remote territory, with not a person, house or sign of civilization to be found.
The dirt road was stunning, cutting into the sides of mountains and along impossibly narrow ridges while offering far-reaching and spectacular views in all directions.
To complete the loop, we had to turn onto a second dirt road.
This second road was insane. Even narrower and with extremely steep inclines and declines, soft dirt patches that were tough to drive through and sheer drop-offs at all times.
It was also insanely beautiful (as you can see in this video!).
youtube
Just before arriving at the main road we were aiming for, we came upon a closed steel gate that blocked our track and forced us to turn around and completely retrace our route for 1.5 hours. (We were not happy about that.)
After thinking we would be stuck in the middle of nowhere while trying to get the van out of some soft sand for the sixth time, we eventually reached the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road once again and continued our journey away from the coast.
After this long day, we decided to spend the night at an RV camp in the small town of Greenfield, right on Route 101, partly because we couldn’t find anything else and weren’t in the mood to keep on searching. Among the huge RVs and massive trailers, we backed up our little minivan into its spot and had a quiet night, and our first shower that didn’t involve splashing water onto our bodies from a sink faucet in a rustic outhouse or bathing in a cold creek (which was actually quite nice).
Day 4: Monterey
After breakfast at the Denny’s in the town of Soledad (what would a US road trip be without one breakfast at Denny’s?), we decided to drive into Salinas, the hometown of John Steinbeck, for a wander through its quaint downtown area.
From here we continued to the coast until we reached Monterey, where we had decided to meet up with my friend Jerry.
I had actually only met Jerry once before (he’s a good friend of one of my good friends), and while I knew he was a stellar guy, I certainly wasn’t expecting the welcome we received from him and his wife. Jerry gave us…
the keys to his classic Saab convertible so that we could buzz around Monterey for the afternoon
a delicious home-cooked seafood dinner that we all ate while looking out over Monterey Bay from the window of his living room
a great room to sleep in (the waves outside lulled us to sleep!) and an invitation to make ourselves completely at home
And most importantly, awesome company. Over a couple of bottles of wine, we all spent a few hours that night talking and laughing about Monterey, about authors and books, politics, our jobs and our other interests. It was simply a great night.
Day 5: A Redwood Forest and Our Final Night
After brunch with Jerry at the excellent Wild Plum Cafe in town, it was time for us to hop back into our van. Our stay in Monterey, which also included time wandering Cannery Row, downtown and the beach, was short but perfect and as a result, we didn’t feel the need to visit any other towns. We drove right through Santa Cruz and onto Route 9 until we reached the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park instead.
It was our first encounter with the redwoods and this little park was an ideal location to get out into nature and be among these massive, mesmerizing trees.
Then, before we knew it, the time had come to find a place where we could enjoy our final evening with the campervan. We continued into San Mateo county along small roads for about an hour and a half, randomly turning right and left several times, until we came upon a one lane, cracked pavement path that seemed worth checking out. We followed it for about 2 miles and it eventually led us into the Pescadero Creek Park, a park that seemed to be long forgotten given the condition of its gate and entry way and the complete lack of even a trace of visitors.
As a result, we were thrilled and we soon found a small clearing right up on a mountain ridge. This would prove to be the idyllic location we had hoped for.
We pulled out the chairs from the van just in time for sunset, poured some wine, put on some music and, despite having forgotten to buy dinner and with only granola bars to eat as a result, we dug in for one final night among the beautiful California nature.
Day 6: San Francisco
Waking up early in the midst of some heavy, wet fog, we did some work (despite the remote location we had great 4G coverage!), organized all of our stuff and then quietly began the last leg of our California road trip. Two hours later we pulled into the Lost Campers parking lot in San Francisco, climbed out one last time and just like that, dropped off our trusty campervan.
A California Road Trip in a Mini-Campervan?
Is a mini-campervan right for you? I’d be curious to hear your thoughts.
After our experience, we realized that the main downside of such travel is that it can be a little cramped as there isn’t a huge amount of space inside the minivan.
Apart from that though, it’s definitely an ideal option for travelers that simply need a place to sleep and the basic amenities for their road trip. For one or two people, it works out very well as the small van allows you to travel on any road and you always have a bed to lie on. If you use campgrounds, the real mattress inside the van is far more comfortable than sleeping in a tent and you’ll also have all the equipment you need to prepare your meals.
And when split among a couple of travelers, the price is more than reasonable since you get both transportation and accommodation in one.
As for Lost Campers themselves, the staff are extremely helpful and the company’s culture seems to truly revolve around making their travelers happy. I know a couple of readers wrote to me after my last post to say they had an awesome experience with this company too. The vans and equipment are in good condition, the rental process is hassle-free and they have three convenient locations as well (Los Angeles, San Francisco and Salt Lake City).
If this is your travel style, Lost Campers USA is well worth checking out for a California road trip, or any road trip in the western USA!
Would you travel in a mini-campervan? Any questions about the road trip or the campervan itself? Let me know!
