Hmm, okay uh, I have no idea what I’m doing here but I feel like everyone needs positivity and so here’s a post where I’ll try to give just that.
First off, happy holidays and a good end of the year to everyone who reads this, I am glad that you’re here watching my blog and perhaps even interacting with me! Thank you for everything, whether that is a simple follow or an occasional (perhaps anon) ask, or actual interactions!
Next, I want to say that everyone that I’m seeing on my dash is absolutely amazing and I admire so many of you and am happy whenever I see you around! I am most likely very happy to have you around, especially if we’re mutuals and interacting with one another. I would probably love to talk with each of you more, but I’m just really bad at smalltalk or anything like that so with most people, I simply default to only messaging them (= you) when there’s something as a reason to do so. Sorry for that!
This goes out to everyone reading this: You’re awesome, I’m honored to have you here and interested in my blog, and I hope that your days or weeks or months will be great because you surely deserve it!
And then, I’ll now follow with a kind-of list mentioning a few people that I want to say more to. Which might sound repetitive because I suck at words in these regards, but yeah. Under a cut for length.
If you see this post and weren’t tagged, please don’t be sad or think I don’t value you being around! I can’t tag everyone, and I don’t have the best mind for things like coming up with someone that I forgot in the moments of writing this.
To not start off with the same names all the time, I wrote down the URLs I wanted to include and randomized the order. So don’t think anything by if you’re first or 5th or last on this list! And once more, I’m bad at words, so I’m sorry if this isn’t sounding too great or like it’s similar for each one.
I told myself to not include anyone that isn’t active-ish at the moment, but I made some exceptions to that because I felt that said person needed to be on my list.
@rogueprinceconsort ~ (I read the post you did recently more or less saying you’re leaving, but I wrote this before that post and it would have felt wrong to erase it from here only because of you leaving!) I enjoy our interactions a lot! They feel like they actually develop a story, which I can’t say for ALL my interactions but definitely for each one that we have going! Which is really cool! You’re one of the only few people where I have the chance to play around with different verses too (well, or at least one different verse, since our other two ongoing interactions are in the mainverses of my muses, but still), and you’re one of the few giving one of my OC-sideblogs a chance as well, and, just, I really am so thankful for it and happy to have you as a mutual!
@untouchable-lightning ~ You aren’t here at the moment, so let me just start this by saying that I hope that things will get better for you again soon! It’s a lot of fun to interact with you and I think you’re a good writer and I’m very happy for our interactions! They are always fun! I did not often yet get the chance to do this other RP-style that I do (the ‘choose-your-option’ one) and you are one of those that allowed me to play through it, and you also interact/ed with my sideblogs too, so a big thank you for that! Our threads also often last nicely long, which is absolutely amazing since it’s a big rarity these days, too. You’re great, and I’m happy that we’re mutuals and interaction-partners!

4cr Plays - Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

Mario and Sonic are, unquestionably, two of the biggest titans of the gaming world - eternally popular characters who somehow, against all odds, work well in a variety of settings. Yet, they rarely meet. Sure, they can brawl in Smash Bros, but everybody is in that. Dedicated crossovers are rare.
The Olympics, apparently, is just the event needed to bring these two heroes together. It makes sense - the real-world Olympics bring together the best athletes from around the world. Why couldn’t it bring together two of the icons of gaming?
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is my first foray into the “Mario and Sonic Crash an Athletic Event” series, and I had all sorts of questions. There is a story mode. Would it offer any explanation of how - or even why - everybody decided to show up in the real world? Would the two of them take on normal humans? If so, how could anybody beat Sonic at something involving running? Even more pressing, how could a portly plumber beat an actual athlete? Is the Mushroom Kingdom considered a country in the Olympics? Or... whatever country or world Sonic is from?
Read on for my impressions. Some of these questions are even answered. I was surprised too!

Alright, here’s the deal - M&S 2020 (I needed to shorten that somehow) is a sports-themed minigame collection for one to four players (locally) or two to eight players (online). Take basically any sport represented in the olympics, and it will be represented here - relays, sprints, archery, karate, you name it - even skateboarding and surfing are represented.
Rather than competing against normal humans, characters from the Mario and Sonic franchises take each other on in the event. The specifics - number of players, controls - vary based on the event, but in general, each minigame attempts to recreate the feeling of taking part in that competition. That is a bit vague, but we can take archery as a simple example. In archery, you press a button to draw the bow, use the stick to aim - fighting against your shaking hands - and release to fire. In many of the running events, you press to focus energy while waiting for the whistle, then spam a button while running to pick up some extra speed.
Since there are a lot of ways to play the Switch, there are also a lot of ways to control each event. For instance, I played quite a lot in handheld mode, using pure button controls (that is, with the joycons attached to the Switch). You can also play most events with two detached joycons, or even with one single joycon. The latter mode will obviously be a bit simpler, but can be nice for a party where you need to spread the controllers among a larger number of players.
This is the second time the summer Olympics have been held in Tokyo - with the first being back in 1964. This is a great excuse for a throwback, so a number of minigames have been included that call back to the previous games. They do this in exactly the way you’d expect - using older pixel style to represent those events. The central plot of the story mode revolves around this. Dr. Eggman has created a game system containing the Tokyo 64 game - as well as a nasty surprise. The system sucks Mario and Sonic in, along with Eggman, Bowser, and Toad. Inside the system, the good guys and bad guys have to compete for gold medals to free themselves, while in the modern world, the remaining characters compete to free the trapped heroes and villains.
The modern events are depicted in 3D, with the modern look for the characters. The Tokyo 64 versions are in 2D, with 8-bit Mario sprites and 16-bit Sonic sprites (against generally 8-bit-ish backdrops). The throwback isn’t just in terms of the appearance either - the modern games tend to be a bit more complicated, while the retro events feel like they dropped out of something like Summer Games. In total, there are about 20 modern events and 10 classic Tokyo 64 events, giving you plenty to try out. There are also three special “dream” events - shooting, racing, and karate - that feel a little more substantial.

My actual enjoyment of the minigames varied quite a bit, depending on which ones I tried. To be honest, I think many of them are actually a little overcomplicated - a little too much to try to work through in a multiplayer setting. Several of the events depend too much on endless button mashing, and I almost started yelling at a canoeing event - one that depended on rapid, timed spinning of the analog stick - that brought back flashbacks of an early Mario Party.
That said, I also quite enjoyed a number of the games. The versions of skating and surfing are both quite fun - simple, but satisfying, timed runs where you attempt to pull off as many combos as you can. I also really liked the shooting and archery events. The retro diving event, where you try to match button patterns in a narrow timing window - representing mid-air movements - was also quite satisfying to master.
This is a minigame collection. While it can be played alone (as I mostly did in preparing the review), it feels like it was designed for multiplayer. If you don’t have a bunch of friends to invite over, I would skip it. While several of the games are fun, they really do work best as quick bursts of fun with a few friends. That said, the story mode is fairly substantial, and acts as a great way to introduce you to all of the games. It is, absolutely, worth working your way through. I just might skip the game if you have no plans to dig into the multiplayer.
Strangely enough, an area where M&S 2020 really pretty well is as an advertisement for Tokyo tourism. In the real world, the Olympics will take place at a number of sites in the Tokyo area. In the game, these events take place where they will in the real world. Likewise, the Tokyo 64 events take place in their equivalents from the 1964 games. In the story mode, you get to wander around these sites - at least, within a small portion of the site. However, you aren’t just running around stadiums and race tracks. You also get to visit several of the major tourist sites in the city - such a Tokyo Station, the Tokyo Tower, Skytree, Asakusa, and a number of others. You can run around a small recreation of each area, and talk to Mario and Sonic characters about these tourist sites. Each area also has a number of trivia questions you can uncover and answer.
Maybe it was the fact that I was just in Tokyo a couple of months ago, but I really enjoyed seeing some of the places that were still fairly fresh in my memory. A Shy Guy laments that Tokyo Station is hard to navigate. I could certainly sympathize. Still, a major part of the Olympics is seeing how the setting influences everything from the mascots, to the ceremonies, to how the sports themselves are conducted. It was cool to see the game make an attempt to present the setting in the same way. Likewise, it’s cool to see the differences between 1964 and 2020 Tokyo - even ignoring the pixel versus polygon difference, you can see just how much Tokyo has grown and changed in the decades since the last event.
M&S 2020 looks fantastic, and performs well, on the Switch. The 3D sections are clean and colorful, lovingly recreating the Tokyo setting. The 2D sections also look great - although the mix of 16-bit Sonic and 8-bit Mario can be a little jarring at times. Framerates are rock-solid, and I didn’t experience bugs or glitches of any kind during my time with the game. It’s solid across the board, and it was clear that SEGA put quite a bit of work into the game.

If you are looking for a party game on the Switch, M&S 2020 is worth a look. While the minigames are a bit mixed, many are quite satisfying. The game offers a huge variety of events, makes great use of its Tokyo setting, and hosts a substantial story mode. The polish and care that went into the release are quite nice - you can tell that getting things right for the Tokyo games was a priority for the Japanese developer. M&S 2020 is a solid pick for your next gaming party.

10. Brawlhalla

Brawlhalla could be described as Smash Bros lite. It’s a platform fighter that incorporates powerful weapons and gadget drops that change your playstyle according to the specific item. One minute you’ll be fighting with grenades, then the next you’ll be riding a rocket spear into someone’s face.
Play in ranked or casual matches that support 1v1, 4v4, and anywhere in between. There’s even an alternate party mode with completely different objectives to mix things up. The roster of 46 legends can be bought with earnable in-game currency in addition to real money, but there are always 8 legends available for free every week in rotation.
Aside from the cute sprite art and animations, every legend has different stats that help to make each feel unique. For example, my favorite Legend, Fait, has increased speed and strength but lowered dexterity and defense. Barraza, on the other hand, is more of a tank with slower movement but a high defense stat. Brawlhalla has something for everyone and might have you coming back with friends to play once you get your first taste of victory. – Stella Chung
9. Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress 2 is the grandaddy of hero shooters. But don’t play it for a history lesson. Play it because it’s fun, stylish, unique, and still boasts around 50,000 concurrent players every single day. Choose from nine of the most creative and fundamentally dissimilar classes ever crammed into the same first-person shooter to accomplish objectives with the rest of your ridiculous 16-player team.
Don convincing disguises, eat a sandwich and even drench your enemies in piss. If the brilliant core game modes are too fun for you then why not try the cooperative, wave-based Mann v.s Machine mode? And much like CS:GO, the TF2 community has taken it upon themselves to create even more wacky modes like prop hunt, surf, and trading servers where players argue over who has the most valuable hat. – James Duggan
8. War Thunder
Initial release date: November 1, 2012
War Thunder is an absolutely massive military vehicular combat game, featuring hundreds of vehicles from multiple eras and more than half a dozen nations. You’ll progress through the tech tree of your chosen nation’s arsenal of aircraft, tanks, or naval warships.
Choose your preferred arena, be it ground, land, or sea and queue into matches of up to 32 players. Good news if you’re a Mil-Sim buff: War Thunder offers realistic and simulation variants of the normal arcade mode that boast more realistic damage and flight models in addition to things like having to return to an airfield to reload. There’s certainly a lot of progression to work through, but even at low levels, there’s plenty of pretty fun to be had. – James Duggan
7. Paladins
Initial release date: September 15, 2016
Paladins is more than a little similar to Overwatch, but it does some interesting things of its own. What’s unique about Paladins is that it incorporates a card deck system for your champion that grants amplified attributes and enhanced or modified skills that allows you to build towards a specific playstyle.
All cards are free to use for all Champions which opens up customization to a higher degree. There are three major game modes: Siege (a capture the objective and push the payload type), Team Deathmatch (5v5), and Onslaught (a capture the point objective).
And of course, Paladins boasts a roster of 41 playable champions each with unique abilities. For example, my personal favorite, Seris, is a support character who directly heals teammates but is also able to hold her own in a fight since dealing damage heals her. My favorite ability of hers is that she can slip out of dicey situations with her Shadow Travel which grants immunity from damage for a limited amount of time. Matches aren’t absurdly long and getting kills feels super rewarding, especially if you’re trying a Champion you’ve never played before. – Stella Chung
6. DOTA Underlords

Dota Underlords is a Valve-created, standalone version of the popular “Auto Chess” mod for Dota 2. At a top-level, Underlords is a deckbuilding tactics game. And while it isn’t exactly easy to pick up at first, it becomes dangerously fun and addictive once you have a few games under your belt.
Each match pits eight players against one another to see who can build the best team of random units drafted from a shared pool. You’ll have to consider unit placement, synergies, stats, effects, your opponents’ strategies as well as properly manage your gold and experience in order to achieve victory. Every match is a brand new opportunity to try a new and fun build, which makes the prospect of playing just one more hard to refuse. – Miranda Sanchez
5. Smite

MOBAs can seem daunting to approach but Smite makes it easy to jump right into the thick of it. Most MOBAs are isometric point and click, but Smite is actually unique in that it’s played in third- person. Gods, the roster of playable characters, are deities, immortals, and mythical creatures from ancient mythology from all over the world.
You can play as Medusa, Ra, or even Cupid if you want. The classic game of Smite is a 5v5 but there are other game modes with different rules and objectives that you can choose from. My personal favorite is Joust, a 3v3 mode that’s on a one-lane map with the goal of destroying the enemy’s defenses and their Titan. Joust, along with a few other game modes, usually last about 15 minutes which makes it super fun and easy to hop into a match without worrying about spending a half-hour in one game. Smite is a fresh take on MOBAs and is beginner-friendly to players who might be unfamiliar to the genre. – Stella Chung

The Counter-Strike series has been the gold standard of competitive PC shooters for more than 20 years and the global eSports scene for CS:GO has been going strong since the Major Championships were founded in 2013. While CS:GO’s biggest draw is undoubtedly its core bomb defusal and hostage rescue game modes, it also has a plethora of other modes to choose from including the addicting gun game and a new battle royale that went live back in December.
In addition to the official game playlist, CS:GO allows the community to build private modded servers that allow for a variety of creative game types. Some of these custom servers help you with your aim, while others house surfing obstacle courses, and some even create bizarre story campaigns that you just have to experience for yourself. – Stella Chung
3. Warframe
Initial release date: March 25, 2013
From the outside looking in, Warframe can seem impenetrable. Half a decade of updates, system reworks, and ever-evolving stories have made it a complex game chock full of different mechanics to learn. While that can be intimidating at first, Warframe is so dang fun that it more than rewards the time you put into learning it.
Years of updates also mean it holds a well of content so deep you may not see the bottom even after hundreds of hours playing – all of which can be experienced entirely free, as Warframe has some of the most inviting free-to-play systems on this list. It’s a game that truly never stops getting better, and it’s well worth getting comfortable with so you can craft your own space ninja suits and bullet-jump through waves of enemies with the rest of us. – Tom Marks
2. Dota 2

Remember MOBAs? Though they are no longer front and center in the gaming trends spotlight, they’re still immensely popular, and Dota 2’s spot on this list is a testament to that. Dota 2 is a highly strategic MOBA with a reputation for its challenging mechanics. But, if you spend any time with it, you’ll see why people like myself have invested years in this game. Like most MOBAs, Dota 2 pits two teams of five against each other on a map divided up by three lanes.
The first team to destroy a key structure in the enemy’s base, called an Ancient (hence the name Defense of the Ancients), wins. All the matches may happen on one map with the objective the same each time, but the growing list of over 100 heroes and plenty of item combinations to go with them makes each match unique. Valve’s constant updates, some of which completely change the map and key mechanics, usually keep the meta fresh.
Dota 2 can be frustrating at times like with any living multiplayer game, but those narrow (or even crushing) wins make it worth it. Even better, it’s all completely free. As of summer 2019, it’s fair to say that Path of Exile is the hands-down best ARPG on the market. In terms of post-launch support, developer Grinding Gear Games has candidly raised the bar for the genre. The most recent content update called Legion is Path of Exile’s 10th expansion.
The breadth of unique and replayable content at this point is absolutely massive with depth to match when it comes to character progression and loot. What’s more, all of this great content is free. Its monetization system is more altruistic and less intrusive than many $60 AAA games in 2019. If you’re looking for an ARPG with hundreds of hours of unique gameplay and no signs of slowing down its post-launch support in the near future then look no further than Path of Exile. – James Duggan
