most of the time I feel like my batshit lexicon borne of spending most of my childhood reading is kept, like, fairly under wraps (this sentence excepted) but sometimes ppl comment on my word choice and I'm like oh ok right. normal people don't talk like that.

I wasn't sure if I was going to post this, but I may as well.

I keep starting to reply to things and then stopping bc the words just aren't there, and I suppose I figured out the core of what bothers me so much (and is making me have such a rollercoaster of a fan experience) about the show.

It's not well-written. My opinion is my opinion, so I'm saying this subjectively, take it or leave it, but ... I feel that it's not well-written. The overall story is fine, and the plot is fine, but I don't know if it's because of the limited number of episodes not being enough to house the story, or because of the relative inexperience of the writer/showrunner+director, or both, or something else, but -

In an earlier reaction post to episode 4, I mentioned really wanting to sink my teeth into all of the subtext I picked up on. That was what made me initially enjoy the episode so much - there were a lot of little moments that I initially felt revealed so much about the characters and about Loki, and I wanted to analyze them. But at some point, as I gathered more information, my perspective changed and now I no longer want to analyze the subtext bc ... subtext = good. Subtext w/out payoff = not as good.

I'll go into more detail in a moment, but I think the tl;dr of it is that I feel like the narrative requires the audience to work way too hard to put together all of the moving pieces here and, like, I kinda just don't want to do that work? Not so much of it, and not in vain. A lot of the enjoyment of Loki's characterization is coming from fans who are rationalizing why he's behaving as he is, but the narrative never actually confirms those rationalizations. It's asking us to figure it out and maybe our conclusions will be correct but maybe they won't, though. At some point, subtext isn't enough without explicit follow-through.

I thought my issue was with the lack of character development - that is, not having enough narrative space to really earn the big things that are happening now, like Loki/Sylvie or Mobius turning against the TVA. And that's still true, to an extent; I still feel like the pacing is all very off and it seems like most of these things kinda came out of nowhere (but are not unbelievable - just undeveloped).

But, yknow, it is what it is, it's a limited series, and I can excuse some things. Ultimately, my issue isn't a problem with what the narrative isn't doing, it's a problem with what the narrative already failed to do and probably cannot recover from at this point.

The narrative has left out significant details that should at least help us do some of the work here. If a person turned on Loki and started episode 1 and had no background knowledge of the character besides that he tried to take over New York - how would that person interpret Loki? Would that person say, oh, well, he's been through X, Y, and Z, and plus A happened, not to mention B, C, and D, so really, it makes sense that he seems off-the-rails, or that he'd want to get ridiculously drunk at the worst time ever.

Maybe we'd like to believe they would, but how would they be getting to that conclusion? The narrative hasn't led them in that direction so, no, they would not say well we have to consider this, this, and that. It would be impossible to really understand Loki as a character from just what we've gotten in the series. The general audience would probably interpret Loki as being out of his element and so it becomes, I wonder how this character is going to get the upper hand here. And, while that's not wrong, it's just so limited.

The narrative at face value does not address Loki's identity crisis from Thor 2011. It does not address his hurt and devastation at being lied to, nor does it address how complicated his self-image is (bc it sucked to begin with and that was before he found out he was part of a race of "monsters," as he'd been taught his entire life). It does not reference Loki being so broken at the end of Thor 2011 that he deliberately let himself fall into the void of space (aka tried to kill himself). It does not reference that he was tortured by Thanos or even that he went through a seriously dark time in between Thor and Avengers, and it absolutely does not reference or address any influence or control of the mind stone.

These are all things that we, the fan audience, know because we've already invested our time into this character's story. But tons of people, the general audience, wouldn't know these things. Or if they did, bc they saw Thor and Avengers, they wouldn't be thinking about them as deeply as we would, nor contextualizing them with how Loki is behaving now, or why it would make sense that he needed to get drunk, or why it's understandable that he needs to keep going-going-going in order to not have a spare second to think or feel.

They'd probably look at Loki, again, as a character who was a villain and is now getting his comeuppance in a place where he has no power or control, and no literal powers, and even when he manages to escape and catch up to the variant, he proceeds to fuck up their plan for seemingly no real reason except that he wanted to get drunk bc he's hedonistic. Which Sylvie even berates him for! I mean. This is not exactly a complex character breakdown, nor a very flattering one, but that's what the narrative has given us.

(If the narrative has addressed Loki's mind control, his torture, his mental breakdown, his suicide attempt, and his general shitty self-esteem as a result of his upbringing, please point it out to me. If the narrative has explicitly acknowledged and referenced these things anywhere and I am missing it, please show me where. Please explain to me how the casual viewer would know any of these things that they need to know in order to actually understand what's happening in this story.)

So I mean, okay, we have a narrative that doesn't paint a full, accurate picture of Loki. Fine, sure. But because the general audience starts out on the wrong footing, they're not going to get out of the overall story what the writers probably intended them to. For example, in episode 3, a lot of us theorized that Loki had some kind of plan - that he broke the timepad on purpose, for some reason, bc otherwise it wasn't believable that he'd be such a failure. But episode 4 revealed that no, there was no bigger plan, Loki just plain old messed up. Which is fine if, again, one is only considering the surface-level portrayal here, but it's not true to Loki's actual characterization.

I mean. Loki is not perfect and Loki actually fails a lot, this is true. He fails for a lot of reasons, but incompetence has never been one of them. Usually it's that either things grew beyond his control, or there ended up being too many moving parts, or he had to change his plan at the last minute due to some roadblock or another being thrown his way, or even that he got in his own way - whatever the case may be for his plans' failures, he was always at least shown to know what he was doing.

That wasn't the case here. The "plan" to fix the Timepad failed as a direct result of Loki's actions, which were careless and made him seem incompetent, like he couldn't even handle this mission. "You had one job," etc. And there were pretty big consequences for this; they were not able to get off-world in time and would have been killed had the TVA not shown up at the last second.

And maybe none of these things matter bc the writers never intended any of this to be a reflection on Loki's character, positive or negative. The situation exists solely because the writers needed to put Loki and Sylvie together in some kind of hopeless scenario so that they could get closer, and thus the narrative could set up their romance. I get that - but, there were other ways to do it that didn't require Loki to look foolish.

Furthermore, the whole reason they needed to set up the romance is to show Loki eventually learning to love himself (like, figuratively but also literally). The audience is supposed to gather that Loki and Sylvie fell for one another, possibly due to the high emotional aspect of, yknow, being about to die (in addition to the variant-bond). The intent is clear: Loki and Sylvie almost die but get rescued at the last minute, having now created an emotional bond --> Loki and Sylvie team up and the narrative further establishes that Loki, at least, has caught feelings --> Loki might confess them but is pruned before he gets the chance --> he somehow survives, he and Sylvie are reunited and don't want to lose one another again, and the combined power of their love is enough to break the sacred timeline and spawn the multiverse, and the reason that the power of their love is so, well, powerful is because it's about self-love and self-acceptance as much as it is about having the capacity to love someone else. The end.

I get all that. The writers more or less said all that. And, I mean, it's certainly not the way I would have chosen to go about it, but it's a fair enough arc to explore. I don't really have an issue with the intent - but my question, however, is this: if the narrative has so far not addressed Loki's background issues (as outlined above), and has furthermore kinda gone out of its way to portray Loki as hedonistic and narcissistic, among other things (like kinda incompetent), and the context the audience starts with is that Loki's this villain who deserves what he gets -

- my question is 1, why should the audience care whether or not Loki gets to a point of loving and accepting himself (thus to make the theme of self-love, via the romance, hold weight) if they don't know that he hates himself to begin with and 2, why should the audience root for Loki to reach that point when so far the perception of him is that he's "kind of an asshole"? if he's a hedonistic narcissist, he probably already has a pretty inflated sense of himself, right? A misplaced inflated sense of himself, at that, because, again, the narrative has made him out to be not that capable of much of anything. (And it didn't start out that way! It seemed to start out with Loki being capable and intelligent but it's like episode 3, in trying to set up the romance, just jumbled it all up somewhere. I think this is why I'm harping on the Loki/Sylvie aspect so much - it's frustrating bc it kinda messes up the whole story and can't even accomplish what it's supposed to anyway.)

Anyway, that's beside the point. What I'm ultimately getting at is, at what point is the audience supposed to get invested in Loki's personal growth journey?

They can't, not really. Without understanding and having the context of everything Loki has been through up until now, and why he hates himself, and why it's so important that he learn to love himself, then the "payoff" becomes kinda pointless bc the significance of it is lost in translation. So suddenly we're left with this romance that comes off as either "Loki loves Sylvie bc of Reasons" (best-case scenario) or "Loki loves Sylvie bc he's vain, narcissistic, and kinda twisted" (worst-case scenario). Neither of these conclusions are what the writers intended or were going for, I'm positive, but there we are, regardless.

In order for the writers' intent in these storylines to land, they need to address the context of what makes these particular stakes high for Loki. So far, they haven't done that. They're asking the audience to pick up on all of these things, and they're showing things that subtextually make sense and are relatively in-character - but only if you realize there's subtext in the first place.

But you can't expect the audience to do all of the work for you. If you don't want the audience to think that Loki is a narcissistic asshole and instead you are trying to convey that, worst-case scenario, he thinks he's a narcissist but is an unreliable narrator, then you have to address that. If you need the audience to understand why you're going the selfcest route and why it's important to explore Loki's capacity to love himself and others, you have to address where that exploration is starting from and why it matters. Etc etc etc.

The narrative isn't doing any of that. And it isn't like it'd be that hard to do it. They don't need to reinvent the wheel here; a lot of the pieces are already there. A few lines of dialogue for context, a brief scene here or there addressing the issues, a little more care and consistency in how Loki handles things - these are all little things that could go a long fucking way in making the narrative stronger.

I'm rambling. My basic point is that my rollercoaster of emotions with this show is because

- as a part of the fan audience, not the general one, I can contextualize and analyze the subtext and come to the conclusions the show wants me to, and thus find the story and the characters more or less enjoyable,

- but I am also going to be using the subtext to come to conclusions that aren't there but probably should be (I think it would be a better story, for example, for Loki to confuse platonic love with romantic love bc it would pave the way to explore just how fucked up Loki's understanding of love - whether of other people or of himself, and the different forms it can take - actually is)

- and when they're ultimately not there, then I think, okay why am I bothering doing all this work just to ultimately feel very unfulfilled? They don't even have to write it the way I would, I'm not saying that, but they do have to do something to make the story feel rewarding.

If we don't get some confirmation of what Loki's been through, and where his headspace is, and why it matters for him to love himself, then the story remains pretty shallow and, for me, it's not fulfilling enough. It's not engaging enough. There isn't actually anything to sink my teeth into, so it becomes kind of boring. Maybe it's rewarding to other people, and that's great for them, but like - I need more than whatever this is.

So I'm just like - well, I had a lot of worries about this show, but my being bored wasn't one of them and now there's only two episodes left and am I really not going to get anything out of this, in the long run? No new canons, no new depths or layers, no new information on Loki's experiences? This is it?

I don't dislike it. I didn't start out disliking it, and I probably wont end up disliking it. I mean, there are a lot of good moments, and good things, and fan service-y things that I appreciate. As far as inspiration for fic goes, it's a goldmine, both plot-wise as well as aesthetic-wise. All of that is great. I don't dislike this show.

But I am disappointed in it, and I feel like I'll be watching the next two episodes lacking the sense of anticipation that would make it exciting. I'll still enjoy them, probably, if for nothing else just the sheer Loki content, but whatever it was I felt watching episodes 1 and 2 is gone and I'm sad about that, too. Because I really wanted to feel fulfilled by this series; I wanted it to fill up the void that Loki's death in IW created three years ago. And I just ... don't feel it. Maybe, maybe that'll change over the course of episodes 5 and 6. I don't know.

Everything that I end up enjoying long-term, I think, will come about as a result of my own interpretations and analysis and while theoretically there's nothing wrong with that, if I had known all I'd get out of this series was more headcanons or support for my current headcanons then, well - that's fine, I suppose, but I'll definitely a little bit robbed.

Rating the letters of the alphabet

I feel like part of my style of comedy is just rambling about shit and making loose connections between things as part of an overall bit. I think. I’m no expert on myself, unfortunately.

The inspiration for the following absolute load of shite is trying to search Tiermaker for nothing. Like, no characters in the search bar. Didn’t come up with anything. Did a search for just a space. No dice. What about just a? Surely that’ll bring up everything with an A in the title. But it didn’t, and I was somewhat disappointed.

Then my head started writing bits about letters and that’s how we got here. This is probably really stupid, but maybe it’ll at least be fun. Wordplay is cool, though maybe not my strong suit? Anyway.

A: A is one of the two letters that’s also just a word, as you’ve just seen, giving it a necessary promotion in rank. Not a lot of things get to double up like that, though with the “an” ligature maybe it’s actually a double or nothing. But because of the confusing common connection crossing contexts for the character, it gets somewhat awkward to talk about the letter in conversation. An A, in my opinion, A does not get. 4/5.

B: B is also just a word letter but unlike A when you write it out you have to stick a few extra letters on to make it work, making it not as good. But B’s association with bees isn’t enough, because in the year of our lord, like, 2019 or something, it would become inextrixably linked with shite memes as the B emoji became king. And I just don’t respect that. It’s otherwise a fine letter, dragged down by its company. 2/5.

C: Oh come on now, the word doesn’t even have a C in it anymore! You can sea the see without any of our tertiary letter’s involvement whatsoever. Not to mention how its two main sounds are just copies from other letters wholesale. C must be confusing to non-english speakers, I’d imagine. C as a grade gets what C as a grade typically entails for many a schoolchild. 3/5.

D: It would be remiss of me not to give a sterling grade to the D. Why, none of us would be here without it. While many a youth may find the D to be quite a humourous subject, I assure you I’m taking it with the gravest of sincerity when I say the D has got to be one of the best letters of all.

And by D I mean deity, of course. Wait, what did you think I meant? 5/5.

E: The absolute absurdity that is the E meme elevates E efficiently enough to excel beyond many another vowel. However, it is also the single most common letter in the English language, going so far as to open the damn name. It’s to the point where someone made a point of writing an entire book without using it, and I think Gadsby is cool but mayhaps avoiding fifth uncial was a bit showy. I can’t help but mark it down for the sake of hipster cred. 3/5.

F: F is for Fuck. I like the word Fuck. F is for paying respects. I think the military-industrial complex has poisoned our cultural landscape to the point that a reference to one of its most prized productions’ awkward moments has become one of the most colloquially used meme letters in existence, And That’s Terrible. 3/5, I’m conflicted.

G: Man literally who the fuck cares about G. What is it even good for. Just an absolute waste of a letter, total shithouse. It’s NATO equivalent is Golf, the Worst Sport, too. Who asked for any of this? Just use a J instead, it’s cooler. 1/5.

H: I’ve seen “Hhh” used enough times in written forms of pornography to not consider it a Horny Letter. That and it, being short for Hentai, is often used to denote adult material in Japan. Basically what im saying is, I think this gets worse the less sex-positive you are. 6/9.

I: I think I’ve said enough about letter words already, but I is another high-tier one because like A I is just it’s own thing. It can also, however, be a bit confusing, looking just like an l a lot of the time, and having to constantly capitalise it is a pain in the ass. I also don’t have a particularly high opinion of myself, so a high opinion of I seems disingenuous. 3/5.

J: Clearly the best letter, hands down. I’m definitely not biased. There are so few letters as underappreciated by J- a fact many a person who’s had to do that “assign yourself an alliterative adjective” icebreaker game has had to reckon with. Because it appears to be a lot more popular with names than with words, and that just kind of sucks. 6/5.

K: K has in some circles managed to bump off its partner to become yet another letter word, though in a very informal abbreviated sense. However, when you’re looking into scientific fields, eventually said partner returns, having lost some weight on the trip down to absolute zero. This all makes complete sense in my head, and I’m sure is a lot less funny to anyone who doesn’t live there. 4/5.

L: I’d argue that L doesn’t cop its namesake. It’s a really useful letter, loads of words use it, especially in pairs, and my ADHD-brain thought it was fun to just say LLLLLLLLLLL for a bit while I was thinking about this so I guess that’s staying in now. Put me down as an L Lobbyist. 4/5.

M: Mmmmmm. M&Ms. But also it’s kind of a pain to write. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. 3/5.

N: I’d like to fight whoever decided we should have two letters that sound so similar right bloody next to each other in the alphabet. Actually, who the fuck even decided the alphabet’s order to begin with? Maybe it should go M to N, that’ll bloody show you. 2/5.

O: Our fourth vowel, and perhaps one of the underappreciated ones. O is similarly a letter word, but a much more common one considering its use as an interjection. It’s also one half of a very powerful letter combo, as we’ll see. 4/5.

P: There’s the other half. Many a joke involves OP as a phrase, whether it mean overpowered or original poster, and the letters’ adjacency is a lovely bit of serendipity. Whenever I say P out loud, on its own, I have to resist the urge to do some incredibly shitty beatboxing, which may or may not be a good sign. 4/5.

Q: I was going to write some very harsh words about Q, and its dependency on U, but then I realised that that is probably hate speech against the disabled. It still sucks, though. 0/5.

R: R is the one I am most struggling to think of things to say about. R is another letter that’s just kinda there. I’m sure the Roberts and Rachels of the world would disagree with me, though. It’s also the name of a program that I know has traumatised a lot of young biologist wannabes, slapping us with a whole pile of maths and statistics when we just wanted to look at cool plants and shit. Or in my case, cool cells and shit. 2/5.

S: The most overrated consonant, but also the thing that makes plurals not a pain in the ass. However I’m going to lean towards giving S a positive rating, if only because it’s associated with snakesssss (and serpentine characters who can talk) and I like those. 3/5.

T: I don’t think T gets enough credit as one of the pillars of the English language. A lot of very common words feature it, and yet it feels like it never gets the same level of credit as big shots like S or half of the vowels. T is like the character actor of the alphabet, is basically what I’m saying. 4/5.

U: Ah, the letter Americans hate for some reason. I think this is actually commentary on the history of American politics. Because throughout history, America has been extremely selfish and self-centered, while attempting to present a positive image that people are finally seeing past. They only entered WWI and WWII when it was convenient for them, they started wars and initiated coups in even their allies for petty ideological reasons, and they’ve gone to war with several countries and funded wars with several others seeming just for shits and giggles. Because apparently if you’re not an American, then you’re not one of them, and that means they hate U. 4/5.

V: I actually think V is underrated. It’s a fun sound. That’s it, no joke here. It’s neat, I like it. 4/5.

W: This may come as a shock to you, but double-u over here is actually two Vs! unless you’re writing in cursive, but fuck cursive. The French actually have it right on this one, naming it double-v (pronounced doobleh-vay). Add in the fact that it’s literally just M upside down, and you’ve got a pretty shite letter. 1/5.

X: There’s a reason literally every “A is for Apple” thing you see made for kids uses Xylophone for X, and that’s because there are no commonly used words that start with it. Seriously, it’s all just scientific terms- I’d argue X-Ray is more common than Xylophone in common parlance, but also, who wants to explain imaging to a kid. It doesn’t even get a second page of words on Dictionary.com. X also has implications as a letter word, that I’d rather avoid at the moment. 2/5.

Y: Ah, Ygreck, everyone’s favourite “what the fuck, France?” moment. Between that and being sorta kinda not really a vowel, Y prompts its own question more often than I’d care to admit. 2/5.

Z: As a (technical) member of the generation associated with this letter- on the one hand, I’m sorry, on the other, y’all have it coming. The final letter of the alphabet, one of the other ones worth 10 in scrabble (and yet X isn’t???), and one we probably got pretty sick of in the early 00s when it was everywhere- ironically, when most of the generation was getting born. 2/5.

And that’s the lot of them. I hope this didn’t alienate any non-English speakers too hard. It’s probably fine.

He doesn’t particularly care either way. if they’re there and within reach, he’ll use them. If they’re not close, he won’t. He’s not opposed to it, he’s fine with incorporating them in but he’s usually cool with just having himself to pleasure you, just the way he likes. He does like to watch you use them on yourself though. A lot.

He can tease a little but it’s never a lot. Mostly because he ends up torturing himself at the same time. He much rather go at you full force and overwhelm you. He may tease you throughout the day, maybe with texts, voicemails, maybe even a picture of his own. But physically teasing you don’t last very long.

He curses and hisses often, unable to hide it, or care to hide it for that matter. Sex is supposed to be relaxed and natural, so he’s not gonna force it or have a coronary trying to suppress it either. He’ll make the noises he makes and that’s that.

Binge-Watching: Inuyasha, Episodes 39-42

In which the horizon is looking especially grim, I pinpoint the flaw behind this show’s pacing, and Miroku is officially on the shit list.

Rising Storm

Well, shit, looks like I was right about the increasing levels of darkness this show is aspiring towards. Naraku, through some unknown source of newfound power (perhaps his newfound body?), has been crafting new simulcrania to do his bidding, growing a personal squad of super soldiers from his own cut-out organs. Isn’t that a lovely picture. Kagome, Inuyasha, and all the rest are more outmatched now than they’ve ever been, and it shows; this chunk of episodes is basically one long exercise in failure. The heroes routinely have their asses handed to them, barely escaping death by the skin of their teeth. Inuyasha ends their latest battle more severely injured than he’s ever been before, having been slammed with the full force of his reflected Wind Scar attack. And as if that isn’t troubling enough, Naraku has just committed the gravest sin of his entire existence: he’s turned Kagura into a villain! Okay, I kid, but honestly, it was kind of funny to realize that this new antagonist shared a name with one of my all-time favorite fictional characters. Part of me thinks Sorachi might have actually gotten that name from Inuyasha in the first place; hell, Naraku’s other new minion, Kanna, even shares a name with Gintama!Kagura’s alter-ego as her own child. That can’t be a coincidence. Otherwise, it’s too fucking weird.

Anyway, the point is, this show keeps pushing into darker and darker waters. Shadows hang heavy over our protagonists now, enemies are facing them from all directions, Kikyo’s betrayal has been revealed, leaving Inuyasha to grapple with the aftermath, and we’ve got a melancholic new ED to top it all off. The rays of the sun are getting harder and harder to see, and I get the sense that it won’t be long before something really goes wrong for our heroes. I shudder to imagine what Naraku has in store.

Padding for Time

All that said, the further we get into Inuyasha, the more I’m finding myself frustrated by that same, fundamental flaw I’ve been jabbering on about pretty much from the start; the overabundance of unnecessary exposition. There are just far too many scenes of characters standing around, explaining the story as it happens, without letting the audience engage with the narrative on their own terms. I can follow the logic of how Naraku tricked Koga into thinking Inuyasha killed his tribemates just fine, show, you laid it out perfectly well. I don’t need you to dump your entire story bible on me to get the point across. In retrospect, though, I think I wrongly pegged the reason as to why the show was written this way. It’s not so much that it’s talking down to the audience as it’s stretching out its content for the sake of adaptation. I’m fairly certain the manga was still running at the time the anime was being produced, so the anime staff is doing everything in their power to keep from racing ahead of the source material. So they stretched every moment out in excruciating detail and added a couple minutes of flashback to every episode, keeping the story from advancing too fast, but doing absolute murder to its pacing in the process.

In other words, this is the first time that I’ve really been confronted with an age-old issue that anime fans have been complaining about for as long as I can recall: unnecessary filler for padding. I’ve heard legends of how some of the most popular properties- One Piece, Dragonball Z, Naruto- are bogged down in adaptation by the anime stretching the source material out to keep from surpassing their manga source material, but this is the first time I’ve actually experienced it. Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter were about as tightly constructed as long-running shonen could possibly be, Cardcaptor Sakura and Gintama were perfectly capable of spinning into incidental side stories while the plot waited to catch up, and modern shonen like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia circumvent this problem entirely by allowing for seasonal breaks as opposed to just continuously airing for all time. Shitty filler is a complaint that modern anime’s seasonal schedule has pretty much managed to disappear, save for a few stubborn holdouts like Black Clover, and as such, it’s a part of anime history I’ve never experienced before. I almost feel like I’m stepping into a musty old museum and blowing the dust off some long-forgotten tome. It’s kind of exciting!

Well, it’s exciting in concept, at least. What’s definitely not exciting is watching it play out in real time. I completely understand now why padding for time gets such a bad rap in the anime community, because there is just so much stuff shoved in the gills of this show that just doesn’t need to be there, like so many packing peanuts. There’s too much unnecessary exposition, too many repetitive flashbacks, too much time spent on clearing up moments that were already perfectly clear. And as a result, the actual amount of time that the characters are allowed to be characters, as opposed to exposition delivery devices, suffers greatly. I like these people a lot, but their personalities and motivations are too often pushed into the background to register as fully as they should. I imagine this problem isn’t going to go away anytime soon, so I suppose I’ll just have to grit my teeth and bear it. But man, it’s definitely disappointing to see so many potentially powerful moments hamstrung by Inuyasha’s indulgence in anime’s original sin.

FUCKING CHRIST MIROKU

And speaking of disappointments, good fucking god is it getting harder and harder to like Miroku. Look, just general perviness is annoying enough, but propositioning sex to an eleven-year-old? Jesus. Look, I don’t know exactly how old Miroku is, and anime has always been weird about age in a million different ways, but there’s just no way for this to come off as anything other than creepy, predatory, and grooming. Not that the show doesn’t try to play it off as “oh, that wacky Miroku!”, and the girl’s totally in love with him three years later and isn’t that cute and fuuuuuuuuuck right off with that garbage. It doesn’t matter how many times you have the girls “reprimand” him on a surface level; if he’s not growing or changing, and his actions don’t actually have consequences, and it’s never treated as any sort of serious character flaw, then all you’re doing is indulging in that same gross, tired trope (looking at you, Mineta). And as if that wasn’t fucking enough, the show goes so far as to hint that Sango is actually falling for this loathsome little toad, as if her frustration over him grooming a fucking preteen is just snippy jealousy and not worth taking seriously. Fuck. Right. Off. I already hate it enough when two characters are made to fall in love for no other reason than every other character saying they’re in love, trying to pawn that garbage off to excuse potential pedophilia is NOT FUCKING OKAY.

Look, I don’t like hating Miroku. He’s far from a one-dimensional pawn; he’s got some genuine depth and pathos, some moments of genuine humanity and compassion. There’s a bit when he’s talking to the woman of the episode about the curse of his Wind Tunnel, and he’s visibly shaking as he’s trying to deflect away from the trauma it still causes him, but the pain he feels still peeks through in lines like ”To live strong is very difficult.” It’s a raw, genuinely kind of uncomfortable moment that speaks volumes as to the kind of person Miroku is, and why he tries to hard to avoid thinking about the dark things in his life, losing himself in easy pleasures and living in the moment. It’s powerful stuff, and it proves he’s so much more than this godawful trope that’s been hoisted upon him. But I can only take characters as they are, not as I want them to be, and Miroku’s utter grossness is only doing more and more damage to someone who deserves to be far more compelling.

like just now on twitter its trending that someone finally got acquitted of defending himself from being attacked by white nationalists over half a year ago...takes that long to figure out if he ought to be blamed for being attacked

plenty of women are still jailed for defending themselves against domestic abuse (this is reminding me of a keith knight comic i think i have on hand & will post if i do) while people will also trash on ppl who “tolerate” longtime abuse because they shouldn’t have Allowed it in the first place, they shouldve left, they should fight back. but if they fight back theyre potentially up for criminal charges, sure, thats fine. and you know god forbid an abused woman have children because then she’s a bad mom too for allowing her kids to be exposed to that, if she was a good parent she’d take the kids (how) and leave (where) and effortlessly be able to support them and seamlessly give them just as good as—no, actually, an even better quality of life. and when she can’t she’s equally condemnable for not wishing a system of support into existence and not getting a job as if one worker can support even themselves alone adequately anymore and when she has a job and doesnt have as much time to spend with her children or god forbid has to work illegally to actually get enough money...well anyways obviously the problem always is that you shouldnt have been poor or abused or not white or not in the right place at the right time always or etc etc etc

like i left home overnight b/c i was abused and of course i didnt have some alternate version of a stable home and supportive family just sitting around out there, which is always part of what holds you off, and shockingly when i left home i was homeless & that immediately is criminalized and it was funny b/c i’d step into work and be accepted as just another person in that context but i go outside & try to find places to be that’s not in my car b/c if you’re walking around looking normal its fine unless you were playing pokemon go w everyone else at night and the rich people got annoyed & also i’d like to go to movies. but then at night my existence is inherently criminal and i’m having to dodge the cops who like to keep things nice at their discretion for the rich white neighborhoods & just what a stunning development that i can’t automatically thrive in an economy where even fulltime jobs dont give you enough to have a place to live and i dont have family to fall back on and i was already suicidal since idek when & was never allowed to exist just as myself or develop ambitions or wants besides surviving. but i shouldve magically been able to thrive the moment i stepped outside my abusive house & everything shouldve seemed accessible to me and the system works and i guess i shouldve magically conjured up somewhere to go overnight!! not like i didnt try to get an apartment and land a $700 depressing studio in the middle of winter w terrible heating insulation so i was searching for a job while trying to keep warm w blankets and tea and baths and makeshift hot water bottles & eating as little as possible & ultimately just bleeding abt 2.5k and finally snagging a job just before having to retreat into the trunk of my car as my personal quarters. like i was even lucky to have the damn car paid off and in my name, and also lucky it was a minivan (more room).

I’ve come up with a more efficient way to finish up chores for today, get you nourished and well-rested. Ne: I think I have a clearer idea how much fun I actually had while doing those things I can’t do now that I was able to when I wasn’t sick Ti: Wanna tie that in why Ne, Ti, Fe and Si could work together to not be let ENTP be sick? Fe: Woops, nearly hit someone there. Maybe getting off the radar and resting so that we’ll be in our best form to engage people would be a good idea. I agree, Ti! Si: I’m fine with Ti's suggestion, being sick sucks Ne: I really do miss those those things I can’t do now that I was able to when I wasn’t sick. Being not-sick would allow me to do those things Ne, Ti, Fe, Si: UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL   My head is now a base of operations for Ne, Ti, Fe and Si to see through Operation Get-Well-As-Soon-As-Possible. Ti is second in command but is the one with the real power. Ti comes up with plans and provides advisory support to every action the team members want to take. It’s amazing how integral and present Ti is for the whole team.   Ne does its usual “That option might be cool/good”, only that Ne listens more to Ti now that Ti and Ne have the ENTP pain-stricken body sensation urgency of Operation Get-Well-As-Soon-As-Possible’s shared goal(s) in mind. Ne then goes a little bit crazy afterwards after being rejected and going along with the team’s overall well-being so many times that Ne and Ti negotiate a plan whereby Ne gets a small window of time to do whatever it could possibly want with NO RESTRICTIONS and the bonus of Ti, Fe and Si actually helping Ne out with whatever Ne wants to do. Ne excitedly agrees because it’s a new plan Ne has never thought of. (Good job, Ti. You did a good move for this Operation. We’ll only know how long Ne will stick it out to this plan later on. So far, Ne is pretty satisfied.) I’ll give credit to Ne for listening more to Ti and working more with the team though.   Fe is more honest during this Operation. Instead of usually pointing very affecting human interactions, Fe comes up with random “I hated that, that’s not a helpful way to people to behave” and “That person may attack ENTP” points. Ti then steps in and asks, “Does any of the team members know what is actually going on?” Fe, “No.” Ti goes, “Your response seems not warranted.” Fe goes, “You’re right, Ti. Ne really wants to eat some cake while being sick even though ENTP ate cake while being sick 2 days ago and didn’t feel good about it. After ENTP eats a smaller piece of cake and doesn’t feel good about it, Ti goes, “Are you sure that eating overly sweet things will help you achieve what you want in the end, Ne?” Si goes, “I have data to back a negative answer to that question. ENTP ate cake while being sick 2 days ago and didn’t feel good about it. ENTP just ate cake while being slightly less sick and still didn’t feel good about it. It’s not really working out for the outlook on overly sweet things.” (Good job, Ti and Si!) Ne happily goes, “Oh, the momentary urge to eat overly sweet things is gone now though!” Si sometimes brings up “I remember y was done z way and a resulted,” frames of reference to which either Ne goes, “Oh, what if we tried a variation of z?”, Ti checks Ne’s suggestion out and goes “Seems like it’ll work out,” and ENTP does Ne’s suggestion or the whole team just agrees on doing a similar version of what Si brought up in order to save ENTP more energy and time for nourishment and rest. There’s probably other outcomes too but I’m pulling out the outcomes where Si played quite a role in. Si is pretty happy that it’s contributing quite a bit to the team. (Side note: Ti to Si - I don’t quite understand why ENTP is so afraid of you. You have really good strengths and big weaknesses to work on. I reserved a rental car in California with Enterprise. The price was $9.99/day because of a weekend deal . When I checked in at the counter the agent told me that I needed to either provide proof of FULL COVERAGE insurance or purchase their insurance (which would raise my daily rate from $9.99 to $40)!! If I didn't do either then they wouldn't let me rent a car. I thought that was ridiculous and decided not to rent a car. I've never been required to show proof of any type if insurance whether it be liability or full coverage when renting a car. Was there some recent law that I missed or were they scamming me?
