Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting capabilities. Avidemux is available for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows under the GNU GPL license.
AviDemux 2.7.8 new features:
Many new video filters added by courtesy of https://github.com/szlldm
A dedicated MOV muxer is now available, replacing silent fallback to MOV muxing mode within the MP4 muxer.
A subset of color info relevant for HDR support is retained in copy mode when both input and output video are stored in Matroska / WebM containers. Settings to add or override color info have been added to MKV and WebM muxers.
The indexer in the MPEG-TS demuxer now detects resolution changes in MPEG-2 and H.264 streams which are entirely unsupported and suggests aborting indexing. If the user chooses to continue, it records file offsets of all resolution changes to the log. This allows advanced users to split the file at these offsets using other tools like head and tail into chunks which can be processed with Avidemux.
YUV varieties of the lossless Ut Video codec are supported now for decoding and encoding via bundled FFmpeg libraries.
Uncompressed 24-bit audio is now supported for a subset of file formats.
Limited support for 7.1 channel layout.
Decode and stream copy support for XLL substream in DTS audio tracks.
Audio properties are now updated on resuming playback. This allows to start saving after an audio format change. When audio format changes during playback, the FFmpeg-based audio decoder will output silence and keep format rather than producing garbage.
An option to keep the identity of markers A and B instead of swapping them automatically has been added to Preferences.
The keyboard shortcut for 'Delete' action has been made customizable with alternative keyboard shortcuts enabled.
Other Enhancements:
Multi-threaded video decoding is now available for the bundled FFmpeg.
On powerful multi-core CPUs, this can drastically improve decoding performance. A maximum of 8 threads can be created, but a conservative custom upper limit of 4 is recommended. Values above 8 cause decoding failures. Multi-threaded decoding and HW accelerated decoding are mutually exclusive, changes require application restart to have effect.
The maximum supported resolution has been increased to 8192x8192
The bundled FFmpeg has been updated to the 4.2.4 release.
Non-standard display aspect ratios can be configured in MP4 muxer by specifying display width.
MP4 muxer accepts now MPEG-1 and MPEG-2.
The configuration dialog of the x265 video encoder plugin enjoyed massive cleanup and refactoring by https://github.com/xyzzy42, more Adaptive Quatization Variance methods have been added.
Python interface has been substantially extended, includes now methods to query segment properties, the number and filenames of loaded videos, PTS of keyframes, methods to seek to time with preview updated, to open file dialogs filtered by extension and a built-in method to split filename extension from a given path.
Scripting shell now supports unicode characters.
On macOS, files can be loaded via Finder context menu or by dropping them onto Avidemux icon in the dock.
On Linux, Jobs GUI and the CLI executable can be launched from AppImage by creating a symlink with _jobs or _cli in filename respectively and running the AppImage via this symlink.
Bugfixes
Rate control was broken in some video encoders, especially in VP9 and in NVENC-based encoders, fixed now.
Multiple issues in cut point checks for H.264 and HEVC streams in copy mode, leading to incorrect check results, were identified and resolved.
The first two frames of external AC3 or EAC3 audio tracks are not dropped anymore. This regression from enhanced protection against false positives, added 3 years ago, has been finally identified and fixed.
Indexing of MPEG-TS files with HEVC video was broken when video stream lacked access unit delimiters. The issue was identified and fixed right after 2.7.7 had been tagged as released and is the reason why version 2.7.7 was superseded by 2.7.8.
VU meter was grossly ahead of audio output on Windows, now it is just a tiny little bit ahead.
Numerous other fixes and overall polish.

This $200 Laptop Is Like a Chromebook You Can Hack
A version of this post originally appeared on Tedium, a twice-weekly newsletter that hunts for the end of the long tail.
For some reason, despite the fact that our devices can seemingly do anything with an impressive level of polish, there are folks who want to learn from the tech they use.
They want a challenge—and an adventure. I think I’ve learned over the last year or two that I’m one of those people. I primarily like using Hackintoshes despite the fact that the machines are intended for Windows, and I will mess with old pieces of computing history just to see if they uncover new ways of thinking about things.
So when I heard about the Pinebook Pro, I was in. Here was a laptop built on the same ARM architecture primarily used for smartphones and internet-of-things devices, and designed to run Linux. Is it for everyone?
Maybe not. But, if you love an adventure, you should be excited about what it represents.
Tumblr media

The Pinebook Pro’s hardware does the right things right—and cuts corners thoughtfully
Most companies want to scream out their brand name at you everywhere. Not Pine64, the community-focused maker of single-board computers that has done a lot of branching out in the past year or so.
On its latest laptop, literally nothing on the outside signifies that Pine64 was responsible for building this machine, minus a small pinecone logo on the key where most manufacturers might put a Windows logo.
If there’s a reason for that, it’s rooted in the community around this machine that drives the Pine64 project forward. In an interview from a couple of months ago, Pine64 community manager Lukasz Erecinski told me that the while certain hardware decisions were driven by developers in the space and people in the community.
“We listened and took note of the features the community truly wants, such as privacy switches for the camera, microphone and radios; modern IO interfaces; no excessive branding; end-user repairability, and we tried to deliver the best laptop we can,” he explained.
The delivery part is admittedly not easy for something like this. It took me about two months to get the device directly from Hong Kong, and the Wuhan coronavirus could cause delays for future units. Mine was one of the first units Pine64 produced that had a U.S.-centric ANSI keyboard; all of the devices released before the one I received this month used an Eurocentric ISO keyboard. The manufacturing process here is small, bespoke. Erecinski and the firm’s other main figures are moving carefully as they put these devices into the world.
You’re not buying this machine because you’re looking for something simple and cheap—it’s not like the original Pinebook, a $99 device that is basically a proof of concept that a community-built laptop is an actual thing that could exist. (Linus Tech Tips reviewed it last year, though again, it’s a proof of concept.) You could hit up eBay or your local Target for a cheap Chromebook if you wanted that, and skip out on the wait.
Rather, it’s a weekend-warrior machine, a product for people who think ARM is awesome, who think Linux is awesome, and who like the idea of developing on native hardware, or who want an actual keyboard, rather than a cheap tablet. (Side note: Pine64 is also working on a Linux-based tablet now. And a smartphone. And a smartwatch. Like I said, they’ve been busy.)
There’s a general understanding that, even if this device is only $200 plus shipping, people are doing to get more than $200 of use from it. From that front, I think they did a great job making the device feel nicer than the price point might suggest. The case, with its magnesium trims and plastic top case, wears its budget status thoughtfully. The decision to put metal on the outside, sandwiching a plastic interior, feels inspired, as it’s usually the opposite of what many Chromebook-makers do. It’s a great example of stretching a tight budget in a thoughtful way.
And that’s a common theme of the device, whose creators invested in things users would want (a relatively-beefy-for-budget ARM device, a 1080p matte screen, a useable keyboard, a USB-C port). Sure, corners were cut, but they were cut in places where it makes sense to trim, where the price tag makes them easy to explain away. A few examples:
Tumblr media
The trackpad is tiny and plasticky, but perfectly usable. (Suggestion: Don’t click; tap.)
The outer case is a fingerprint magnet in a way most laptops are not, to the point where you wish they gave it an extra layer of coating. Fortunately, it’s also quite good for stickers, which I recommend you use for covering this thing.
And the speakers are cheap, in a bad way—but the Bluetooth works, as does the headphone jack. You don’t buy a device like this for the speakers.
You’re willing to forgive a lot because of the fact that this is a team of experimenters that was willing to put their necks out for a group of people that find a non-Intel-based laptop an awesome proposition. I mean, I certainly did.
It doesn’t come with much in the way of warranty—just a month—which is almost freeing in a way. You can break it, but you can also break it, if you get my drift. It’s not like you spent $2,500 on it.
And even amid the compromises, the device has a huge advantage over your average Chromebook in one important place: The ease of repair and modification. You can open this machine up and replace things. The default eMMC storage can be upgraded; you can get an adapter to install an NVMe SSD blade; and because the device has single-board computer roots, it’s not outside of the realm of imagination that you might be able to put another board inside of this machine in the future, while reusing most of the other parts. This is a $200 laptop with an upgrade path, and that’s a rare thing in 2020—especially for a low-stakes device like this.
Tumblr media
There didn’t appear to be anywhere to screw in the NVMe adapter, so I just held it in place with that big yellow sticker. I’ll eventually switch to double-sided tape.
As a part of my research into this, I got a hold of an NVMe adapter (sold separately, delivered much quicker than the computer itself) and tried installing a drive myself. The results weren’t perfect: The adapter doesn’t seem to naturally fit anywhere, and a sticker, announcing changes to the device’s internal design, blocked the spot for the ribbon adapter. When I removed that sticker, I got the ribbon cable in, only to find that there is seemingly no easy way to fit in the adapter, which partly goes under the trackpad. It was just hanging out. Fortunately, I had the sticker to go where screws couldn’t. (I joked on Twitter that it’s a load-bearing sticker.)
There are things that one could quibble about with this design—the hinge could stand to go back a little bit further, for example, and backlit keys would definitely be useful—but I think that they pulled off a lot in an extremely tight budget.
The battery life on this is insane—8 to 10 hours easily. And because it doesn’t use a ton of power, it can charge off a cell phone’s power brick, as long as it uses USB-C (though a barrel plug charger is included). If you were backpacking across a continent and wanted the most lightweight and battery-packed device possible, the Pinebook Pro would be a contender.
There were some areas where the device buckled a bit in my testing. For example, while the device is technically capable of 4K video, plugging it into a USB-C adapter on my 4K monitor was a strugglefest. I’m sure that, if I keep tinkering or find a different cable, I can get it to work. Just like a lot of other things here.
Because honestly, that’s the point of this device.
“Our end-users are very well informed, usually technical and specifically want an ARM laptop.”
— Lukasz Erecinski, discussing the user base for Pine64 devices, which is often very community driven and in the open-source spirit.
Software considerations: Get ready to tinker
The first time you boot into your Pinebook Pro, you’re greeted with a red intro screen, complete with Pine64 logo (the same one on the keyboard), that says, “Open Sesame.”
That description feels pretty accurate. This is a device intended in many ways for discovery of the Linux ecosystem, its benefits and quirks, and what might or might not work out of the box. You don’t buy this because you want to save money that you’d otherwise use for a Chromebook; you buy it because you want to be able to screw around a bit.
By choosing an ARM-based device over x86, you’re cutting down your options for both operating systems and software, but there’s still plenty of stuff there. Most of the major browsers have ARM variants, most notably Chromium and Firefox, and I found the ARM version of Vivaldi quite nice. YouTube playback was perfectly serviceable, and I ran into very few situations where I couldn’t install an app because it had not been designed for ARM-based Linux. There’s reason to expect that situation to improve in the coming years, thanks to the rise of hobbyist computers like this.
So, what about the operating systems? I think this is where my viewpoint gets a little mixed. The default Debian-based build included, with a MATE-based graphical interface, is simple and spartan—not as polished as some of the x86-based alternatives, but still offering plenty to work with. It does the job. If you’re just looking for the machine to work, this is probably the default you’ll want to stick with.
Fortunately for those wanting more than that, trying other operating systems is very doable—with the included MicroSD slot, I was able to throw in different cards and try out numerous community builds that supported this device. With the exception of the Android build, I was able to get every one I tried to work with varying levels of stability.
Chromium OS worked decently for surfing the web, but the offered community build had some stability issues and didn’t allow for easily installation of the software’s pretty-good Linux capabilities. As it’s not a pure Linux build it’s likely not getting as much attention as some of the others, but I hope that changes, as it’s a fairly decent way to surf the web on the cheap and it has some great stretch capabilities.
The Manjaro build (which uses a KDE Plasma desktop interface) was nice, though not my personal cup of tea, as I tend to be more comfortable in Debian/Ubuntu terminals. Probably my favorite of the bunch, though, was the Ubuntu MATE community build, which is more customizable than the default Debian MATE build—although, like Chromium OS, it had some quirks, most notably some compatibility issues with the NVMe drive that prevented the laptop from going to sleep.
If you’re looking for a Linux experience with training wheels, this probably isn’t it, and you’ll be happier setting up an old x86 laptop to try the more diverse ecosystem of Linux variants—among them System76’s simple and thoughtful Pop OS Ubuntu variant, the Mac-like Elementary OS, the switcher-targeted Zorin OS, and the highly polished Chinese-made Deepin.
But I don’t think that’s necessarily a knock on the Pinebook Pro. You should get it because you know you’re going to spend weekends messing around with random settings, or programming. And when you do get things where you like them, you get a device with a nice keyboard, a long battery life, and a fully repairable interior.
This ecosystem is still fairly young, and young ecosystems grow older and more diverse over time. This comes with good sides and bad sides. While you can tinker to your heart’s content with a device like this, it also means that you’re at the mercy of fellow tinkerers when something doesn’t work quite right. That might just lead you to a solution, but because it’s relatively early days in the world of ARM-based laptops, you’re stuck if something doesn’t work.
In a year, the operating system situation is likely to look a lot different because there’s a community pushing it forward. If you buy this, you’re buying into the community as much as the device—and Pine64 has a really interesting community right now, one that will become fundamental to its future growth.
And with that in mind, you can see the potential down the line. In our interview, Erecinski noted that there is room for system-on-a-chip (SoC) gadgets to eventually become useful to more than just the tinkerers that will buy this.
“I feel that we are getting very close to ARM Linux desktop computers being viable as a choice for non-technical end-users,” he said. “We aren’t there just yet, but many ARM SoCs are (at least in theory) perfectly capable of running full desktop environments and software for these SoCs is getting better by the day.”
Just as the original Pinebook was a necessary step to stake out the market, the Pinebook Pro helps set the stage for an eventual maturity. For people that buy this, living through the growing pains is basically the fun part.
“When I see Raspberry Pi-shaped things or slightly bigger, or even smaller, I think to myself, ‘Well, we’re just where the PC was in 1985’—you know, way cheaper than the expensive stuff. People make fun of it, but it’s going to get better faster than the older technologies of stuff. People are going to try things out just to try them, and maybe they’ll succeed.”
— Ed Vielmetti , an employee of the cloud firm Packet and a former journalist, discussing the current shape of the market for ARM-based devices, which he has helped to evangelize through his role with Works on Arm, a collaboration between Packet and Arm that aims to make the case for ARM in data centers.
The interesting thing about the Pinebook Pro is not that it exists and works effectively, but that it paints an image of a future where ARM chips could genuinely prove a better use case on the go. The fact that these chips have found a home in our smartphones and connected devices makes one wonder about the long-term potential of a device that took those skills back to more traditional computing form factors.
Tumblr media
The board at the center of the Pinebook Pro.
It would be a fascinating homecoming of sorts for a chipset that gained momentum in low-power use cases, but whose roots are actually in desktop computers produced by the British firm Acorn.
Certainly, there have been efforts to bring ARM to the laptop realm—most notably the Microsoft Surface Pro X, released last year, that featured impressive hardware, although reviewers were less impressed with the compromised software. Ed Vielmetti, a former journalist who has helped ARM’s reach in the data center through his employer Packet, has tried some of the Windows-based ARM machines, which he notes often have impressive battery life and connectivity compared to equivalent Intel devices.
But Vielmetti, who first gained a professional interest in ARM through exposure to the Raspberry Pi when working on a solar energy project, noted that in many ways, the play for the ARM chipset in more traditional computing form factors is in the long term—rather than right now.
“If it’s like this quarter, something has to be on for some of us this quarter, then you probably want to be, you know, parked very close to what your customers use,” he told me in an interview last summer. “But if you’re looking a little bit out or even further out, and you’re looking at the landscape of changes in the chip industry, and you want to target your software at the people who have the hardware that’s the best, then I think you have to be looking at ARM.”
And there has been growing interest in this specific proposition. Last year, for example, Linus Torvalds noted in an online discussion that there was a growing need for ARM developer boxes if ARM is to have a shot in the world of servers. “Without a development platform, ARM in the server space is never going to make it,” he noted. (The Pinebook Pro is a good start.)
And then there’s the general consumer level, which has seen some exposure to ARM-based laptops running Chrome OS. The wildcard, of course, is Apple, which has long been rumored to be working on an ARM-based Mac. Both Vielmetti and Erecinski noted it was well-positioned to push things forward.
“They have extensive experience with ARM from their phones and their kernel, and presumably also much of the stack already runs on the architecture,” Erecinski said. “Perhaps more importantly, Apple has very loyal customers who would buy an ARM laptop with little or no reservation.”
There are a lot of ways this could end up looking, and Pine64’s image of an ARM-based future may not be the one that wins in the market, although it makes an intriguing present. Another potential path forward involves a recent Kickstarter success story called the NexDock 2, which effectively is a laptop-like shell for ARM-based smartphones with built-in desktop support. It makes sense—after all, many Android phones are already more powerful than desktop computers.
Maybe the future of ARM computing looks like the Pinebook Pro; maybe it looks like the NexDock 2; maybe it even looks like whatever Apple is rumored to be working on. But we may be on the cusp of a future where a chipset famously used in smartphones starts appearing in more traditional computing forms—and the Pinebook Pro shows that the tinkerers are out front here.
Pine64, by building this device and others, is for now at the vanguard of ARM-based computing, but its goals are more modest than most. Speaking about its efforts to support a Linux-based phone ecosystem—another area where Pine64 is at the vanguard—Erecinski underlined the firm’s simple, open-source roots.
“We are not out to sell a million units, dethrone Android and iOS, or build a PINE64 empire,” Erecinski explained. “This project will never be a financial success because we make no money off it—we donate all revenue to our partner projects building the OSes. But that is besides the point.”

What Makes A Smart Phone A Genius Phone?
So, what’s the difference between just being smart to being a genius?
There’s an immense variance between being really bright and being intellectually gifted. While geniuses do tend to be extraordinarily intelligent, they also use imagination and creativity to conceive, realize or envisage something unique. They blaze new trails instead of just trudging down the beaten path. For the genius, the ability to imagine new possibilities is as important as intelligence.
Great geniuses in world history are central to our advancements in science, technology and understanding. Without geniuses from Archimedes to Stephen Hawking, our understanding of mathematics, literature and music would be completely different. Concepts that we now take for granted, like gravity, planetary orbits and black holes, might still be undiscovered.
In the same way, the LG Optimus cell phone is a concept – a genius prototype of the way mobile phones will be built and used in the near future.
On The Cellular Level
The telephone is a good way to talk to people without having to offer them a drink. (Fran Lebowitz)
It’s a fact that form and function are significant factors when buying a cell phone but performance is the most decisive dynamic to be considered. Never forget that a cell phone is only as good as the calls it makes. Thus, even if your handset has the best attributes but can’t make or take a single decent quality call, it’s virtually useless. Even the snatchers in Quiapo and Arranque won’t spend a New York minute trying to filch your phone.
While it’s true that the strength of a carrier’s network is critical to making good calls, the strength of the phone’s antenna and receiver play a big part in performance as well. The fact is, you are buying a cell phone so it follows that at its very core, your handset should serve its one true purpose – call the guy at the other receiving end.
So, for form, function and performance, who you gonna call?
No — not The GBs – call the Optimus, and you’ll discover that it doesn’t scrimp on the most basic function of any cell phone.
If you know the name and if you know the number, you can spend all your unli time talking until your jaw hurts because the LG Optimus cell phone’s 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery can last for up to 400 hours of stand-by or up to 7 hours and 50 minutes of talk time. You don’t even have to lift a finger to do it – with built-in voice dialing, your command is the phone’s wish.
When the time comes when every one of your friends and family members eventually catch up with you in the 3G trend, you’ll be ready to make true video calls with the phone’s 1.3 MP secondary front-facing camera which you can use for high quality video chats.
Additionally, I like the text messaging service’s threaded view. I do most of my communication via SMS and having this feature in the Optimus lessens the confusion of piecing together an ongoing SMS conversation especially if you’re discussing various issues with several people.
Add a proximity sensor feature (so my phone knows if I’m nearby so it can rest and save energy while I’m away), an accelerometer and a gyroscope, and the LG Optimus becomes one handy BFF (best fone forever).
The Fast and The Nitrous
There’s a way to do it better – find it. Thomas A. Edison
The LG Optimus 2X uses NVIDIA’s Next Generation Tegra, the world’s first processor for the mobile web, specifically designed for the high-resolution needs of tablets.
According to the NVIDIA website, Tim Bajarin, President of Creative Strategies, Inc. said, “The new NVIDIA Tegra processor has a unique feature set critical for tablets — fast web browsing with fully rendered pages, uncompromised graphics, snappy user interface and HD video — all with the battery life we’ve only seen with cell phones.”
The key to the Tegra’s capabilities are eight independent processors, including the world’s first dual core CPU for mobile applications. These processors are used together or independently to optimize power usage at all times. With its ultra low-power design, Tegra delivers over 16 hours of HD video or 140 hours of music — on a single charge.
The Next Generation Tegra is a leap in mobile computing performance for the following reasons:
The world’s first Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, ULP GeForce GPU, Tegra 2 chipset.
Eight independent processors that make short work of web browsing, HD video encode and decode and mobile 3D gaming.
10x faster than the processors used in smart phones today, and up to 4x the performance of the previous generation Tegra processor.
Advanced TSMC 40nm process with active power management.
The series emphasizes low power consumption and high performance for playing audio and video.
At a maximum CPU clock rate 1.2 GHz (dual-core), it’s just .6 GHz short of the dual core PC I’m using now, and my computer plays Crysis, Call of Duty – Modern Warfare, Red Alert 3, Starcraft 2, Oblivion, The SIMS 3 and Medieval 2 Total War. It’s not a new PC but it’s still quite fast pa rin, debba?
NVIDIA believes that the future of GPUs on smart phones is no different than the future of PC GPUs. As a result, the GeForce ULV GPU in NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 looks very similar to a desktop GPU — just a lot smaller, and a lot lower power. Or, in the other words, the only thing stopping NVIDIA from putting an Intel 7-like or an AMD Hexacore-similar processor in a cell phone like the LG Optimus is that a processor that powerful needs large amounts of power more than any mobile battery can provide.
Basically, the Tegra 2 processor was designed for a tablet PC. But the guys at LG wanted to give the Optimus more computing nitrous (The Fast and The Furious speak right there) so they basically put an F22 Raptor jet engine in a Mazda RX7. The result is a cell phone that runs in machs not in miles, if you get my drift — my Tokyo Drift.
Now, imagine that Tegra powering your cell phone. Like a mobile phone on nitrous, the LG Optimus excels at multi-tasking between applications and boosts superior web browsing performance. Start-up times of programs /apps and games are suddenly in turbo speed. Your phone will always be sober (alive, alert and enthusiastic) unlike other phones which are as hard to wake up as “pess droonk” English hooligans who’ve had too much Vino Kulafu after watching a Manchester United match.
A dual-core powered cell phone augmented with a 512 MB RAM means you can run multiple applications simultaneously without reducing everything to a grinding crawl. You can switch between applications while maintaining your MS Office Word document or your Excel spreadsheets. You can listen to Bruno Mars and still download files while playing X Men for Android OS – and still receive calls from your boss who asks about the progress of your report. Gaya nga ng sabi ni pareng Bruno, “It’s simply amazing.”
Sa medaling salita, my dream (and every workaholic’s dream for that matter) of having a a mobile phone that works hard (and plays hard) as you has finally been realized with the LG Optimus.
Mobile Life is Like A Bowl of Frozen Yogurt
Like most tablet PCs in the market today, the LG Optimus is driven by the Android 2.2 Froyo.
The Android OS is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. Google Inc. purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005. Android’s mobile operating system is based on the Linux kernel. Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android’s development and release.
The Android Open Source Project is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. The Android operating system is the world’s best-selling Smartphone platform. Android has a large community of developers writing applications or apps that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 200,000 apps available for Android.
The Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can also be downloaded from third-party sites. Developers write primarily in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.
While I was in Divisoria to buy some Naruto and Gundam action figures, I visited Jeney Tan, my favorite tablet PC vendor at 168 Mall. She is all out for the Froyo. She explained to me every conceivable feature and advantage of the OS including the accelerometer which tilts everything you see when you hold the gadget in landscape or portrait mode.
Jeney even made bida about the Android 2.3 Gingerbread that should be in the market by now. Pre-loaded with Froyo, the LG Optimus is upgradable to Gingerbread. Adding my own flawed logic, I informed her that Gingerbread is a big leap from Froyo that when the cell phone’s display is held in portrait or landscape mode, it actually tilts the user in that orientation. She then looked me straight in the eye and said the words that I will never forget, “Ser, bebele ba kayo?”
Like a bowl of frozen yogurt during hot summer nights, Froyo (short for frozen yogurt) is a refreshing approach to using tablet PCs and high-end, high performance phones like the LG Optimus.
The Way It’s Meant To Be Played
Movies are a complicated collision of literature, theatre, music and all the visual arts. (Yahoo Serious)
Before I got the LG Optimus, I had one of those popular media players made by a US company named after a red or green fruit (and no, it’s not a berry). The video playback and quality was okay but among my long list of peeves was that it played a limited number of video formats if not just one which is MP4.
The video format is okay for my cell phone and my computer. But my other portable player has trouble playing MP4s and only plays Windows Media Video formats. So, I had to convert videos to MP4 for my portable media player and into WMV format for my family’s other video player and for movie / video archiving.
It’s in playing various video formats that the LG Optimus shows its true awesomeness. Because it plays and supports multiple video codecs (plus DivX / XviD video support), I don’t have to convert / encode my movies or videos over and over again for viewing and archiving. That saves me time. Precious time that I can waste playing Tekken.
Beyond video support, the Optimus wows us with its display.
I remember the first time I saw the Optimus at an LG outlet glass shelf, I was really amazed at the proportions — 34-22-32. Uh, okay, that was the vital statistics of the salesgirl who look liked Megan Fox. What struck me was that the screen seemed bigger than my touch phone. Asking Megan, I mean the salesgirl, I discovered that my other phone only had a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display while the Optimus had a 4.0 inch display (all the better to see Megan Fox with).
The Optimus is equipped with a 16M-color capacitive IPS LCD touch-screen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels). It has a HDMI port which you can use for HDMI mirroring. Just connect it to a wider screen or an HD TV and experience the most vivid and life-like videos this side of Cybertron.
Because the phone is able to play in full HD through any monitor, you see every detail of Jennifer’s Body in astonishing clarity and sexiness.
I usually watch videos and movies over large monitors when I’m with my family. Most of the time though, I’m using the LG Optimus to catch up on the latest movies while waiting for the FX or the van at the terminal. The viewing experience is just as good as the big screen which can sometimes make you feel that your head is going to be eaten by a giant 3D piranha.
But the best place to watch is in bed – relaxed and alone. And with the Optimus phone’s superior theater-like sound and HD video, I feel like I will have to save Bella again in the upcoming Twilight XXV: Vampire Sequels Without End.
Take Your Best Shot
A good snapshot stops a moment from running away. (Eudora Welty)
The LG Optimus possesses an 8 MP autofocus camera with an LED flash for insufficiently lighted areas like bars, discotheques, concerts and internet cafes / Counterstrike fragging rooms. It prioritizes people over things and stuff with that Photoshop-friendly face detection feature.
I could stop ranting about the phone’s super astig camera right here and you’d be convinced by its performance. But since I like listening to myself talk, let me continue.
Just for the camera phone, I’d sell my other touch screen phone made by a company named after a pomaceous fruit of the species Malus domestica. Compared with LG Optimus phone’s 8 MP camera, my other phone has a measly 5-megapixel still camera (boy, is it cool — NOT!).
Hands down, pants down – the LG Optimus takes the matrix of leadership in still camera shooting.
Size Does Matter
All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages. (William Shakespeare)
When the folks at LG designed the Optimus, they had the young Spielbergs and fledgling George Lucases in their mind. Empowering the YouTube generation, they imbued the phone with the ability to do 1080p video recording at 24fps and 720p at 30fps. I have a JVC Everio HD camcorder that does the same – and it’s a full-fledged video recorder! How the LG people managed to cram a lufet video recorder inside the Optimus phone’s sleek frame is beyond my comprehension. But that’s why they’re geniuses, you see.
And if you’re in a Miley Cyrus or Katy Perry concert and want to record the whole thing, there’s plenty of internal storage (8 GB) and a micro SD slot for 32 GB cards.
Even with just a video recorder match-up, the LG Optimus slaughters the leading, popular competitor which can only record VGA-quality videos at 30 frames per second with the front camera.
LG Optimus trashes the rival with HD quality video recording.
No contest. Match over. Anyone for pizza?
Got My Blueprint, It’s Symphonic
Music is the wine which inspires one to new generative processes, and I am Bacchus who presses out this glorious wine for mankind and makes them spiritually drunken. (Ludwig van Beethoven)
You’ll go gaga over the LG Optimus phone’s high definition virtual surround sound. It’s the first mobile device with 7.1 multi-channel virtual surround sound which encloses you in a lush acoustic experience. The Optimus allows you to chill out or just dance via earphones, speaker, Bluetooth headset or any device with HDMI connectivity to take pleasure in listening to the Dolby Mobile and SRS sound enhancement.
The decision to make the cell phone a virtual stereo component that fits in your pocket is the kind of genius thinking that the LG folks enjoy doing for all of us cell phone users. In the astute words of the modern day oracle we call Lady Gaga, they were born that way.
How The Web Was Won
To myself I am only a child playing on the beach, while vast oceans of truth lie undiscovered before me. (Isaac Newton)
For me, dinner time at the mall is always a constant battle. Whether I’m having meals at Gumbo, Tokyo Café, Banana Leaf, Bacolod Chicken Inasal, Koryo or Gerry’s Grill (all located at SM City The Block), I’m always wishing that my cell phone would successfully find and connect to the free WiFi available at the mall. Most of the time, I’m victorious as the Azkals and in rare occasions it’s like The Battle of Bull Run, Masada, Pearl Harbor and the Fall of Bataan all rolled into one.
But these days, with the LG Optimus, my WiFi struggles are like a walk in the park – the Sandara Park. Its WiFi is at 802.11 b/g/n which means it decently performs whenever you need to update your Twitter account while feasting on that plate of spicy Jambalaya or Garlic Potato.
A phone that can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots enables you to surf the Web or transfer data at much higher speeds. Even if your phone supports 3G networks, you may want Wi-Fi support, too, as it tends to be faster and more reliable than cellular networks. It can be cheaper, too, since surfing on a Wi-Fi network doesn’t require using your carrier’s service.
With the LG Optimus, enjoy high-speed access to your favorite sites with full web browsing faster than any other smart phone in the market. With the dual core processors sharing the load of stacking up graphics, pages and videos, you will notice a faster response time especially those sites with a lot of multimedia and flash components like IGN, FilePlanet or GameSpot. You’ll immediately notice faster access to your favorite websites like Facebook, E-mail, Flickr, YouTube and Angry Birds.
In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night
Intellectuals solve problems. Geniuses prevent them. (Albert Einstein)
One of the best innovations of the LG Optimus Black is the enhancement and the durability of its LCD display. The LCD screen’s contrast and backlight strengths are indispensable for any cell phone. Ironically, it isn’t the darkness of the night that makes images or text unreadable – it’s the bright glare of sunlight which makes thing harder to peruse.
I usually ride shotgun in the FX or van which makes sunlight shine directly on my lap – the exact area where I would be reading an e-book (currently it’s Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic — Deceived). The brightness of the morning sun defeats the LCD screen making the e-book unreadable. It’s the same problem when I watch episodes of Gunny’s Lock and Load – the video is too bomalabs.
That’s the reason why I scored a cell phone capable of counter-acting the brightness factor. The Black’s 4” NOVA display has 700 nits of brightness, 16M-color WVGA capacitive IPS LCD unit. It’s the brightest cell phone screen in the world making outdoor viewing in broad daylight friendlier to the eyes.
The LG Optimus Black also supports multi-touch, which means you can register more than one touch point at a time. This technology allows you to pinch and grab the screen to zoom in and out on a Web page, for example. Other phones support single touch only, and can register only one tap at a time.
Thus, in brightest day, in blackest night, no video or e-book shall escape my sight. Let all who watcheth Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night, I swear, they’ll enjoy it with Optimus Black’s LCD light!
Is It Safe?
In the movie, The Marathon Man, the Nazi operative Szell (Laurence Olivier) repeatedly asked Babe (Dustin Hoffman) “Is it safe?” He was referring to the bag of diamonds Szell had procured at the height of the Third Reich. Of course Babe had no idea what it was all about and he got tortured severely for it.
I mentioned that movie for two reasons. First, one of my favorite actors is Dustin Hoffman. Second, most cell phone users are like that Szell character in the movie – they’re always asking the manufacturers “Is it safe?” referring to their handsets.
One of the most sensitive and most exposed parts of the cell phone is its screen or LCD display. Which is the reason why the kinfolks at LG made sure their units were ready for the vicious bump and grind of everyday buhay. No wonder the LG Optimus is equipped with a 4.0 inch, 480 × 800 pixel Gorilla Glass display.
The unique composition of Gorilla Glass allows for a deep layer of high compressive stress. This is created through an ion-exchange process. This compression acts as a sort of “armor,” making the glass exceptionally tough and damage resistant.
The Ion exchange process that makes Gorilla glass tougher than the other glasses used in other displays is a chemical strengthening process where large ions are “stuffed” into the glass surface, creating a state of compression. Gorilla Glass is specially designed to maximize this behavior. Thus, Gorilla glass is better able to survive the real-world events that most commonly cause glass to scratch, chip, or break. The result is a tough and damage-resistant glass that is ideal for today’s sleekest electronic devices and most sophisticated touch technology.
And for the environment-conscious cell phone user, Gorilla Glass is environmentally friendly and can be recycled. Corning Incorporated, which makes the glass, recycles it at various points in the manufacturing process, and consumers can recycle their devices as part of various recycling programs available in the Philippines.
Far and Away
It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things. (Leonardo Da Vinci)
Isn’t it obvious? I’m a Nicole Kidman fan!
When you’re in the city, being lost is not as perilous as being disoriented in the forest or jungle. In such situations, you’ll need workable tools that will get you home even though you’re far and away in some Oklahoma prairie.
Among the many practical uses of the LG Optimus is its capability to direct you to the nearest geo-tagged landmark. The phone is fitted with a gyroscope, magnetometer, GPS w/ aGPS support, a digital compass and a geo-tagging feature for images and videos.
Choose Your Weapon
You know you’re a serious World of Warcraft player when the game starts interfering with your life. You know you’re an addict when your life starts interfering with the game. (Anonymous)
Playing games over cell phones isn’t something new for most of us. But with an ultra angas dual core like the Tegra in the hood of your handset, the gaming opportunities for your Optimus suddenly enlarge exponentially.
That’s good news for gamers like me. Better processor performance translates to plenty of power to manage advanced graphics and demanding visuals. Say goodbye to bursting bubbles or clicking multi-colored jewels as your staple cell phone game fare. Superior dual core processors allow you to play console-quality mobile games like Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty – Modern Warfare with exceptionally responsive motion controls powered by a gyro sensor. Playing either as Kratos, Rayden or Max Payne, your choice of weapons are now almost limitless.
When you’re at home and have a monster LCD monitor, connect via the phone’s HDMI port and play X Men for Android. Nothing like seeing Logan in full HD unleashing a world of hurt and making shawarma out of those henchmen with his Adamantium claws.
With Adobe Flash 10.2 support and an Android app community churning out new games almost every day, the Optimus makes leisurely gaming while waiting for your turn at the dentist’s chair a virtual paragon of asskickery.
FM First Class
It’s not true that I had nothing on. I had the radio on. (Marilyn Monroe)
If you’ve listened to FM radio lately, you’ll notice that it sounds more like the AM band than what we’ve always known what FM sounds like. Besides the proliferation of talk shows, there are advice and counseling programs, jokes, skits and the proverbial balahura and balasubas DJs who dish out salitang kalye or palingkera style observations on politics, showbiz, romance, work and the intricacies of life.
The rise of the balahura and the balasubas DJs may have something to do with the surge of portable media players that can load up more music MP3s than one can possibly play in one whole day or work week. Thus, if it’s just listening to music that you’re after, you don’t need FM radio. You just need a media player and be your own DJ and choose your music line-up day after day.
But for us who also like to listen to intelligent banter and witty discussions like Monster Radio’s Morning Rush or Nicole Hyala and Cris Tsuper’s Tambalang Balasubas at Balahura, we turn to FM radio.
The FM radio experience with the LG Optimus is really top notch. For starters, the audio is first rate — stereo FM radio with RDS. There’s a micro USB port for charging and stereo Bluetooth v2.1.
But what makes the FM encounter first class is the social networking integration. Superior processor performance means you can listen to Chico and Delamar and then connect to Facebook or Twitter and send in your Daily Top Ten shout outs. The dynamic duo in turn may like or comment on your entry, and basically the whole feedback circle is complete.
In my opinion, that’s the way FM radio should be enjoyed – trulalu at walang halong eklavuh.
Your Future Awaits You
Choosing the right cell phone requires some handwork and clickworks with the mouse and a fair amount of legwork.
Hopefully, with this review on the features of LG Optimus, your mobile life will be lived out at the optimal level. With the complexities and opportunities of today’s high-tech life, a smart phone simply isn’t enough. You need a genius phone. And the LG Optimus is more than just smart. It’s a genius.
As Albus Dumblebee (the Grand Yellow Autobot Wizard of The Planet Hogwartstron) declares, “Step inside the world of the LG Optimus. Your future awaits you.”
Optimus is more than just smart. It’s genius. Visit lgoptimus.ph for more information! Likes: 25 Viewed:

I’m here to argue that the humble and unloved desktop app is here to stay. In this article I’m going to make a case for desktop apps by focusing on two technologies in particular that have been lauded as desktop app killers - Mobile /apps and web apps.
Would be assassin #1 — The mobile app revolution
Recently, Apple made a really interesting announcement. No, not the iPad pro (but we’ll come to that), or the MacBook Air. I’m talking about the 1st of November, during Apple’s fourth quarter earnings call. Apple announced that it will no longer be reporting unit sales of the iPhone. The reason? Certainly not what Apple had to say:
“A unit of sale is less relevant today than it was in our past,” Maestri said, adding that the number of units sold does not necessarily represent the relative health of a product’s underlying business.
The real reason is that iPhone sales have fallen flat. The smartphone market is saturated, and new hardware simply isn’t innovative enough to convince people they need to buy a new phone. Apple shares fell by 7% on the news. Not even the mighty iPhone X has made a difference. For me, this marks the end of the mobile revolution. And that’s not a bad thing.
“Whatever you’re doing, do mobile first” Google’s Eric Schmidt declared from the stage at mobile world congress in 2010. “The smartest developers start with the presumption of location, locality, connection and interactivity.” And who could have disagreed? Mobile was eating the world. And developers were switching to mobile in droves. The writing was firmly etched on the wall. The PC era was over — mobile would be the new computing paradigm.
And so it came to pass. It affected me personally. In 2013, my partner and I were looking for funding for a desktop app. And it was hard! Most seed stage investors simply didn’t want to know about desktop software. This made no sense to me. People were still using PC’s, right?
Mobile has always been one breakthrough away, but has never quite hit the mark. For example, despite Apples’ objections, it became clear that the screen on your phone simply wasn’t large enough to do anything truly useful or productive. Their initial response was the iPad. If you want to create rather than consume, you should buy an iPad! Slate declared the following
“Apple killed the netbook, more or less single-handedly, and we should all be grateful for it”.
The author then reluctantly added “True, the iPad, unlike the netbook, doesn’t come with a keyboard or a pointing device. But you can buy a keyboard for it.” Turns out keyboards are important. A tablet and a keyboard is just a bad laptop.
It’s now 2018 and look no further than the most recent version of the iPad Pro to see that Apple are still trying to convince us mobile is the future. It’s got a chip, Apple says, that is 92% faster than all laptops released in 2018, including those containing intel’s flagship i7 processor. To reinforce this point, they brought Adobe on stage to demo Photoshop. Photoshop! on an iPad! Looks like my laptop is headed to the recycle bin. But even now, Photoshop on the iPad is a heavily compromised experience. I won’t go into examples — you should head over to this excellent article written by the Verge’s Nilay Pattel for his thoughts on Photoshop for iPad.
Despite Apple’s (and others) best efforts, I still need my PC. New hardware form factors alone are not going to kill the desktop app.
Would be assassin #2 — Web apps
We have finally reached the point where web technologies can compete with native technologies. Feel free to debate the pros and cons of developing for the web vs. the desktop in the comments. But technology has very little to do with it. In my opinion, both desktop and web can provide a pretty decent user experience. Just look at the similarities between design tool rivals Sketch(desktop) and Figma (web). But native desktop apps have one considerable advantage. They are treated by the OS as a first class citizen.
Operating systems are designed to be containers for programs. So they do a really good job of allowing us to find, launch, use and switch desktop apps.
Finding
Windows, Mac and Linux all have app stores that allow you to easily discover, find and install the software. Yes, I could use Google. But that’s one extra step, and friction really matters. Chances are, if you are reading this, you are a techie. And we do love a simple UI. A flick, a swipe or a scroll in the right place can make all the difference in the world. Just ask Tinder.
One of my favourite bloggers, Ben Thompson of Stratechery puts it like this:
Finding and installing apps is trivial, easily accomplished on the bus, on the couch, or on the can. And it’s great for developers, as a set; the ease with which apps are installed via app stores likely means exponentially more apps have been installed in the last five years than in the thirty-five years that preceded the App Store.
Launching
This is important but subtle. The ability to pin a program to your desktop or launch and app from the dock/task bar is everything. It puts an important task a mere one click away. No user name or password screen. I click, and I’m there. Again, it’s all about Friction, or the lack thereof.
Switching
When using my browser, I normally have about 15 tabs open at any given time. And I find flicking between them is a royal PITA. Especially if it’s something intensive that requires interaction with other pages or applications. We use Zendesk at Hiri, which, for the most part, is excellent. But replying to users isn’t always straight forward. I may have to involve someone else on the team or copy and paste from another ticket. That means flicking between (even more) tabs and to make things worse, Zendesk has its own tabbed UI. Tabs within tabs.
Same goes for this blog post. Although Medium provide a perfectly adequate UI for writing, I wrote this in notepad and copy/pasted. That way, regardless of what tab I was using for research, I could easily flick back to my article via the glorious alt-tab. It removes a tiny piece of bothersome friction.
Using
I could cover some well worn territory here and say Apps on Operating Systems tend to be consistent with the UI of the OS. Or ‘what happens if you need to use it offline’. I could also argue that native apps are faster (Sketch above uses Apple’s Metal framework to good effect). But that’s not it. I like using desktop apps because they feel more substantial.
In his excellent book Thinking, Fast and Slow, Dr. Daniel Kahneman breaks the brain down into two decision making systems. System 1 is how we ‘feel’ about something, is unconscious, intuitive, automatic and fast. System 2 is conscious, rational, deliberate and slow. Guess which system is responsible for the vast majority of our decisions?
Rationally, I know that there is not much difference between a web based app or a desktop app. But I feel that a desktop app is a more substantial thing. I feellike it should work better because of its relationship with the OS. And how I feel is how it is — that is my reality. And I doubt I’m alone.
It’s complex.
I’m not wedded to desktop apps. Some things are just better online. I don’t feel there’s a need for a dedicated app to book a flight or read the news. But for some reason, I don’t like doing substantial things online. For example, design.
I’m really impressed with Figma, and maybe I just need to get over it, but I prefer that Sketch is doing its own thing, in a separate compartment that is not my browser. I like that it asks me if I would like to update rather than force it down my neck like most online SaaS stuff. I like that when I open a file I’m not uploading it to someone else’s server. I like that I feel that I’ve paid for, rather than rented the tool I’m using.
The reality is, as long as Operating Systems — and let’s be honest here, we’re talking about Windows and Mac OS- exist they are always going to favour the tools that utilise their respective desktop environments. Apple have doubled down on their app store with a recent redesign and the vertical integration of hardware and software using bespoke languages and deeper hooks into the OS. Microsoft have followed suit with their own app store and Surface hardware.
Kevin Kelly discusses the evolution of technology in his book — “What technology wants”. He makes the case that if the conditions are right, some technologies are inevitable:
“Science-fiction guru Isaac Asimov made the astute observation that in the age of horses many ordinary people eagerly and easily imagined a horseless carriage.”
The basic form factor of a PC is the product of natural and obvious evolution. It’s difficult to imagine a PC or laptop being useful without a screen a keyboard and a mouse. And the operating system/desktop app combination is the inevitable consequence of this technology. It has endured because we haven’t found the next step. iPads with keyboards are a just a bad laptop. Web apps are a bad facsimile of desktop apps. They are not the strongest branch in the evolutionary tree that is our interaction with computers.

Product Review: ASUS VivoBook Slim S510UQ-BQ517T 15.6-Inch Laptop
A brand-new Post has been published on http://marquix.net/product-review-asus-vivobook-slim-s510uq-bq517t-15-6-inch-laptop/
Product Review: ASUS VivoBook Slim S510UQ-BQ517T 15.6-Inch Laptop
First off, the ASUS VivoBook Slim 15.6 inch Laptop boasts the worst BIOS I have ever seen. ASUS urgently need to change this! They are now trying a ridiculous GUI-style BIOS screen, but they forgot to make this rubbish work: does not recognise external drives, no USB-boot possible, I wasted hours on end only to finally find a few forum posts saying it’s likely not going to work, at all. Without any intention to taint this review right from the start, this is one of the most important factors I had to consider, so I needed to mention it right at the top of this review.
Most Important Review Question: Does the Item Deliver?
“ASUS — In Search of Incredible”, but the only thing they found is incredibly stupid. So continue searching, ASUS… They need to do a lot more searching, maybe then at least they re-gain some credibility among just slightly advanced users instead.
It seems as if they did not do any marketing, usability and user-base research.
I am going to look into other important features and noteworthy matters about the ASUS VivoBook Slim S510UQ-BQ517T 15.6-Inch Laptop below. The model I am reviewing and commenting about here has the following specifications: CPU Intel Core i5-8250U, RAM 8 GB, Drive or Storage 256 GB SSD, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 940MX, Windows 10 pre-installed (the latter is a major downside, see in-depth reasons and comments below).
Quite unlike previous ASUS notebooks I had, this one is finally fault-free, even has a nice and responsive trackpad, working keyboard etc (not at all a common thing at ASUS, according to my own experience). They either fixed their earlier quality issues, or I just got lucky with the unit I received. Note that I still kept the other one (despite its drawbacks, for it was a versatile allrounder otherwise, and I was happy with its -re-configurability and options for modification, OS-replacement, and overall optimization). I am also giving ASUS the benefit of the doubt when it comes to earlier shakiness issues, assuming I was just ‘unlucky’ and they may have been limited to a few items out of a wider range of fault-free ones? So I am overall (maybe overly) ASUS-friendly in my review here, but enough is enough.
The (Incredibly Stupid) Push for Yet More Vendor Lock-In
It is sad to see how ASUS screwed up an otherwise very well-built and (at long last) quality unit, simply by pushing for yet more vendor lock-in and making it (intentionally or out of engineering incompetence at ASUS?) hard to use this box for anything but housewife-style computing. Wholly unsuitable for anything remotely resembling professional deployment.
Note that I am not that dumb here and I very well did disable ‘secure mode’, turned off all those idiotic shenanigans, switched back from that hairbrained GUI-style BIOS screen to a more normal-looking one they call ‘advanced mode’, I enabled CSM and tried all sorts of additional steps just in order to make this pile of garbage boot from USB-connected devices like CDROM or a standard USB memory. Nothing. Numerous sources all over the Net also confirm that you’re likely out of luck with this product when it comes to wanting only a tiny bit more than your every-day mass-market consumer or dumb user. Not a good approach for any manufacturer. Certainly not worth our money, so let us wish them better luck in future (they’ll need it)!
  Overall Layout, Hardware Design
While build quality has considerably improved over previous ASUS products tested and the display is clear, crisp, stable, anti-glare and simply lovely, the trackpad on my unit was responsive, accurate, and very good, and there are many features mass-market and consumer-level users might like about this ASUS notebook, there are other (more important) factors to consider.
They don’t even include any RJ-45 sockets to connect to standard networking without dongles, adaptors, and similar pain. Have they never seen a professional network or even a medium-size datacenter at ASUS?! Have they never heard of the outrage Apple have been causing by scrapping common connectors on MacBooks?! And do note that these ASUS thingies are not even MacBooks, so ASUS would be well-advised to stand a little lower and adhere to what their audience wants and needs. I really don’t know what they have been smoking. Seriously…
I am most certainly aware (also confirmed in the reviews left and right of this one) that most people only seem to care about how ‘good’ the wireless stuff is or whether it displays nice colours out of the box (and, clearly, it should! Instead of complaining, one could also try to fix those graphics issues by finding that usually easy-to-fix driver problem though)! Still, there is that ‘other half’ of users who need all (or some) of what I mentioned, but ASUS are neglecting that portion of the market altogether.
  Review Result
Meaning, with this (otherwise excellent, really a shame) notebook you’re stuck with that ridiculous Win-10 garbage so many people don’t really want anymore these days. No alternatives. You’re not likely to run Linux on this one. As manufacturers apparently do this on purpose with “Win10-compatible” computers these days, they are not earning my spending money. Plain and simple. Still very frustrating as in time needlessly wasted. I had to send this ASUS notebook straight back to the sellers for a refund and not waste any more time on this ridiculous product.
The unit was bought in order to test Davinci Resolve compatibility, hence the focus on a dedicated Nvidia graphics unit as well as high CPU specs and an Intel i7 processor. Due to the hurdles with even doing a basic OS replacement and Linux install for a professional video editing setup, I could not even get as far as seeing any of the actual purposes and runtime results with a power-heavy professional Video NLE package. While it may be good enough to support the software package for some playing around under Windows, this ASUS notebook (and likely any other one from this manufacturer using this ridiculous BIOS variant and ASUS-style makeover) is entirely unsuitable for this intended purpose.
The ASUS Intel Core i5-8250U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce 940MX Graphics, Windows 10 received an overall score of only 1 out of 5.

Google: pay model prevents salary discrimination
In a blog post, Google claimed that it has a rigorous process to ensure employees are paid equitably regardless of gender.
The Department of Labor sued Google, a government contractor, in January to release salary data and documents that the company has refused to provide. In court in San Francisco Apr. 7, the Department of Labor claimed that women at Google face “systemic compensation disparities.”
“The government’s analysis at this point indicates that discrimination against women in Google is quite extreme, even in this industry.”
-U.S. Department of Labor, to The Guardian
“Our analysis gives us confidence that there is no gender pay gap at Google.”
-Eilen Naughton, Google VP of people operations
According to Naughton, the company’s annual process for determining compensation starts with suggested compensation for each employee that’s based on an employee’s role, seniority, the campus where they work, and their performance. Managers have “limited discretion” to adjust employees’ salaries “providing they cite a legitimate adjustment rationale.”
“This suggested amount is ‘blind’ to gender; the analysts who calculate the suggested amounts do not have access to employees’ gender data.”
-Eilen Naughton
Google’s AutoDraw uses machine learning to help you draw like a pro
Google is launching a new experiment called AutoDraw that uses machine learning algorithms to match your doodles up with professional drawings to make you look like you know what you’re doing.
AutoDraw works on both your phone or desktop with a pretty straightforward experience. You simply start drawing your best pizza, or house, or dog, or whatever and the algorithms will play Pictionary to figure out what you’re trying to draw. It then tries to match your creation with drawings in its database, and if it finds any possible matches, it’ll show them in a list at the top of your virtual canvas. If you like one of those options, you click on it and AutoDraw polishes up your artwork.
Artists can donate their drawings to the project here.
Dropbox for Android now lets you scan, save documents
Dropbox users can now scan and save documents with their Android devices as PDFs. The feature rolled out to iOS users in June.
Users will be able to aim their device at documents, make tweaks like cropping or rotating if necessary, and then saving it to Dropbox as PDF files for later access.
People whose organizations pay for Dropbox Business can search for text within scanned documents with optical character recognition.
Qualcomm sues Apple for hobbling iPhone chips to make Intel look better

After Apple hit Qualcomm with a barrage of lawsuits earlier this year, the chipmaker is countersuing Apple. Qualcomm filed its Answers and Counterclaims to Apple’s January lawsuit today, filed in the Southern District of California.
The full details are in this 139-page document released by Qualcomm, but the company has five key complaints here – including the claim that Apple deliberately didn’t use the full potential of Qualcomm chips in iPhone 7 phones so that they wouldn’t perform better than Intel-provided modems.
According to Qualcomm, Apple “chose not to utilize certain high-performance features of the Qualcomm chipsets for the iPhone 7,” and when Qualcomm iPhones supposedly outperformed Intel iPhones, Apple “falsely claimed that there was ‘no discernible difference’ between” the two variants.
Qualcomm also says that Apple prevented it from revealing to customers “the extent to which iPhones with Qualcomm’s chipsets outperformed iPhones with Intel’s chipsets.” The company also says that Apple “threatened” it to keep quiet about the differences between Intel and Qualcomm iPhones, preventing Qualcomm from “making any public comparisons about the superior performance of the Qualcomm-powered iPhones.”
Other complaints include claims that Apple breached and mischaracterized agreements and negotiations with Qualcomm, encouraged attacks on the company in a number of markets by misrepresenting facts and making false statements, and interfered with Qualcomm’s existing agreements with other companies.
In the countersuit, Qualcomm seeks – among other things – damages from Apple for “reneging on its promises in several agreements,” and to stop Apple interfering in deals with manufacturers for iPhone and iPad parts.
Microsoft says goodbye to Windows Vista
Microsoft is saying adieu to Windows Vista over 10 years after it debuted. Support for Windows Vista ended Tuesday, meaning users will need to move to a more recent version to retain access to security updates.
Codenamed Longhorn, Vista was originally going to revolutionize Windows with a new file system and user interface. Microsoft’s development of the operating system spiraled out of control however, and the company was forced to reset its plans to focus on shipping a stable version of Windows in the middle of its development phase.
The WinFS file system was eventually canceled, but Microsoft attempted to turn the Windows file system into a giant database that could be searched quickly, with linked data sets and related relationships between files mapped out by the system.
Windows Vista also introduced a new Aero user interface, turning windows into glass panels with blurred borders. A sidebar provided easy access to widgets, and the Start menu was tweaked to focus on a new way to search in Vista. Microsoft also launched a flip 3D feature that would render the live contents of windows in a 3D view to essentially replace alt+tab. However, its graphical intensity led to it not gaining traction.
These graphically intense parts led to criticism. Older hardware didn’t perform as well, and Microsoft introduced confusing “Vista Ready” stickers on PCs that didn’t always mean it could handle Aero Glass well. Vista also became known as a resource hog especially on laptops, and at the peak of netbooks, most PC makers opted for Linux-based options or Windows XP as the low-cost machines couldn’t keep up with Vista.
Overall, Vista will most likely go down as a flop that had good intentions but missed the mark with consumers.
Roku TVs now learn what you watch, suggest related shows
Roku is now rolling out a software update focused at Roku TV owners – units that have its media software directly integrated into televisions. One of the more standout features here is called “More Ways to Watch,” offering viewing suggestions that pop up on screen, based on what you’re currently viewing.
Yes, Roku will now know what you’re watching, presuming that you opt in to the feature after installing the update, or after you turn on your Roku TV set for the first time.
To be clear, Roku is only tracking your viewing behavior when you’re watching through an input – like your digital antenna or cable box.
This is enabled through the use of automatic content recognition (ACR), which is common to smart TVs.
According to Roku’s privacy policy, the data will be used for personalized recommendations and personalized ads, as well as to measure the viewership of ads and programming. This viewing data will also be combined with other demographic data Roku has on you.
If you’re tuned into an old episode of your favorite show, for example, Roku might mention that it’s available on streaming services like Netflix. You could then choose to switch to Netflix and continue watching without the commercial breaks of live TV.
It may also suggest related shows to the one you’re viewing.
The recommendations appear as a pop-up on screen, but if you’re not into that, you can disable the pop-up overlay and access them with a press of the remote control.
You can either use the right arrow button to view the ACR results, or the OK button to bring up the info dialog box.
These recommendations will be supported on HD and FHD Roku TVs and 2017 4K Roku TVs with the launch of Roku OS 7.6. 2016 4K Roku TVs will get the feature this summer.
Also included is a feature to make a list of favorite channels with a broadcast antenna; the addition of thumbnail images when using the Live TV Pause feature; support for Closed Captions on Live TV Pause’s “replay” feature; support for a faster resume from standby on some Roku TVs; and support for custom input names on Roku TV.
Both players and TVs get access to an expanded search that can track content on over 300 streaming channels, up ten-fold from a year ago.
The update is rolling now to all Rokus released from May 2011 on.
Slack passes five million daily users, launches in-message drop-down menus for apps
Slack has surpassed five million daily active users, up a million from six months ago. The number of paying customers has also gone up to over 1.5 million from 1.25 million.
The team chat app counts over 38,000 paying teams among its ranks, with half of its daily users from outside North America (specifically the UK, Japan, Germany, France, and India).
At the end of January, Slack had 3.5 million users simultaneously connected.
Since its third-party app directory launched over a year ago, the number of available apps has grown over 500 percent to at least 900. According to Slack, at least 90 percent of paid teams are actively using at least one app.
“We’re really happy with the app directly. It’s a strong ecosystem, and we’re really proud of it.
“Slack is your communication platform where software is embedded into the conversation. We have a suite of different features on our platform. Before we had the slash command … bot users … and message buttons. Message menus are the next step of that functionality.”
-Ceci Stallsmith, Slack head of platform marketing
Message menus are drop-down menus that developers can incorporate into their Slack apps. Not everything can be responded to with a couple of buttons, but when you’re dealing with information pulled from a database, a drop-down menu may be best. For example, if you’re connecting Slack with a customer relationship management tool like Salesforce, you could incorporate a Message menu to show relevant accounts to the user.
Developers can use five different menu types:
Static menus: A set of fixed choices
User menus: Members of a Slack team
Channel menus: Public channels
Conservation menus: All channels (public and private) & direct messages
Live menus: Dynamic based on a server’s response
Slack is launching Message menus with 16 partners:
Front: Bring your team’s external communication (email, social, SMS, messaging, and voice) into one shared inbox
Growbot: Encourages and listens for team appreciation, automatically adding positive reactions and saving team wins forever
Kip: A smart penguin that helps workplaces, organizations, and teams coordinate their group purchases
Lever: Make it easy to engage your entire team in the hiring process. Users can post announcements to Slack channels through #mention notes on individual candidate profiles
MailClark: Send and receive emails, tweets, Twitter DMs, and Facebook messages within Slack
Memo (formerly Pogo): Save and find code snippets, meeting notes, links, Slack messages, or other short work notes – inside Slack or on the web
Nikabot: Keep track of your team members and projects, and get reminders about the day’s missing information
OpsGenie: An alerting and on-call management solution that gives Dev & Ops teams flexible schedule management, escalations, and notifications
ai: Engage your team and boost participation with recurring polls in Slack
Slaask: Allows Slack to function as a “real-time customer service app shared among your team.”
Statsbot: A personal analytics assistant powered by AI to give data insights inside chats
SurveyMonkey: Gathering feedback with surveys
To-Do Bot: A to-do list inside Slack
Troops: Centralize Salesforce workflow in Slack, helping companies “update and share information in order to make better decisions”
Workato: Eliminate app hopping and get work done across cloud apps like Salesforce, Zendesk, Github, JIRA, Mixpanel, and more without leaving Slack
Zylo: Directly survey users of cloud applications across your business in Slack
“[Message] menus points to the fact that we see the conversation you’re having in Slack at the heart of what you’re trying to do. We’re adding functionality that allows developers to use the message as a canvas.”
-Ceci Stallsmith
Message menus are available now.
Dailymotion plans major relaunch focused on premium content, less on user videos
Dailymotion is about to abandon its user-generated content roots.
The video site, now majority owned by French media conglomerate Vivendi, is planning to relaunch in June with a focus on providing a curated feed of professionally produced content.
The new Dailymotion will provide a “daily digest” of topical video programming, centered around news, sports, music and entertainment, according to company CEO Maxime Saada.
“We want to highlight the ‘daily’ in Dailymotion.”
-Maxime Saada, Dailymotion CEO
Dailymotion first launched in 2005, and has long been compared with YouTube.
At launch, the new Dailymotion will be available on Ios, Android, and Apple TV with later support following for Google Chromecast, Xbox, Android TV, and PlayStation.
Users will still be able to post their own video on the platform, but it won’t be “the main purpose of the platform” going forward, according to Saada.
The new design will feature an Instagram-like look on mobile, according to company chief product and technology officer Guillaume Clement, with a new video player built entirely from scratch.
Daliymotion is in the process of on-boarding an expanded lineup of content partners, but Vivendi-owned Universal Music Group is already in the mix. Saada didn’t reveal specifics on what the platform’s ad-revenue split with content partners will be, however he did say that “we intend to be more generous than existing platforms.” YouTube gives 55 percent of ad revenue to its partners under its standard agreements.
The new Dailymotion has three sections: a personalized feed with videos of accounts you follow; a search and discovery section, with suggestions about trending content; and a library for saving videos to watch for later. It will also let users follow topics like “politics” or “pop music” In their feeds.
“We want you to always have the feeling there will be more video.”
-Guillaume Clement, Dailymotion chief product and technology officer
The new Dailymotion apps also feature a shrink-back feature that keeps the current video playing in a video on the bottom of the app while a user browses older content.

Which laptop to buy? Windows or Mac?
New Post has been published on https://workreveal.biz/which-laptop-to-buy-windows-or-mac/
Which laptop to buy? Windows or Mac?
I am getting my son a brand new laptop for Christmas. My price range is around £500. He’s adamant that he needs a 15in HP PC – he gained be lugging it everywhere – however, I’ve also been looking at Dell and Asus ZenBooks. My query is: Can I future-proof my buy to take him through his GCSEs to A degrees, or ought to I only move for an access-level PC with the view of changing it in a couple of years? So which laptop should you buy? Windows or Mac?
His usage could usually be Microsoft Workplace, web browsing and watch YouTube videos. From my headache-inducing searches of numerous forums and guides, I assume my simple requirements might be a Center i5, 8GB and SSD (solid-country pressure) garage. Marie
Hardly ever any of nowadays’s laptops are upgradeable, and the variety receives smaller all the time. While laptops fee £2,000 to £4,000, it makes sense to provide upgrade options. When they price around £a hundred and fifty to £six hundred, people usually update them rather than upgrade them.
laptop
humans additionally upgrade smartphones, fitness bands, virtual watches, compact digital cameras and other gadgets within the same rate variety.
The folks who are buying laptops are usually looking for the pleasant feasible performance for gaming, video editing, computer-aided design and comparable programs. They need to (or “intending to”) upgrading their systems every 12 months or so to improve performance and keep time, which commonly saves cash. Ordinary improvements encompass more memory, higher graphics playing cards and larger SSDs (strong-country drives).
Corporate IT departments may also look for upgradeable laptops because they are less complicated to keep. Massive businesses will buy loads or even thousands of same machines as it manner they don’t ought to inventory a variety of spares to do strolling maintenance. They can also cannibalise broken machines to keep their fleets jogging. The Dell Latitude E5470, which I reviewed at ZDNet.Com, is a high instance. However, it’s out of your price range.
Customer laptops are designed to be thinner, lighter and less expensive, so reminiscence and garage chips are regularly soldered at once to the motherboard. They don’t have detachable backs or “get right with entry to hatches” due to the fact corporations don’t want users messing around internal.
If you need to realise if a computer can be upgraded, attempt matters. First, test Essential’s website to look if it offers memory or SSD enhancements for that accurate model. 2d, search for and download the pics carrier guide in PDF format. This may describe the way to exchange components which are changeable.
Meet Clevo
One exception is Clevo, which makes laptops that can be assembled and customised via resellers consisting of Pc Expert Ltd within the Uk. (Sager sells Clevo laptops under its very own logo name.) Many Clevo customers are gamers seeking out high-end specs, or techie Linux customers. However, you could get a fifteen.6in Clevo UltraNote III inside your finances.
The bottom UltraNote III costs £357 with an Intel Celeron processor and 2GB of reminiscence. Upgrading to an Intel Center i5-6200U, 8GB of memory and 120GB Samsung 750 SSD, at the same time as downgrading the optical pressure to a read/write DVD, pushes the charge as much as £528. Upgrading the standard 1366 x 768-pixel display to a far better 1920 x 1080-pixel IPS display screen would add £35.
In sum, you may get an upgradeable PC with the spec you want for £563, which is a chunk greater than your finances, however, consists of a 3-yr assurance. You may get it beneath budget through switching to a Center i3-6100U, which brings it down to £461.
The UltraNote III can manage a Center i7-6500U processor, 16GB of reminiscence, a 2TB SSD and a Blu-ray writer, so there are lots of improving alternatives, although you have to speak those with Pc Specialist before buying.
Buying a laptop
But your son isn’t going to need any improvements, except he begins doing some extreme gaming or video-modifying. Windows 10 and Microsoft Workplace (to be had loose to maximum students) are noticeably lightweight packages, and nowadays’s processors haven’t any troubles playing films.
Laptop Computers and all-in-ones In case you don’t want portability, do you have got a room for a Computer Pc or an all-in-one? Laptop tower systems are far less complicated to upgrade or restore than laptops. You may quickly alternate your Desktop Computer’s display, update the pix card, upload several drives, or maybe exchange the motherboard and the processor.
Tower systems are typically faster because the processor doesn’t ought to run in a restricted area or use low strength to extend battery lifestyles. They also remaining longer: I purchased my remaining computers in 2005 and 2011, and I expect the latter to the final at least another three years or greater.
All-in-ones also have ergonomic advantages over laptops, and larger monitors, although a maximum of them aren’t easy to upgrade. See mine in advance solution, which all-in-one Laptop need to I purchase for home use?
HP computer desire
The computer that maximum closely matches your request is the 15.6in HP Pavilion 15-au074sa, which is going for £479.99 at Currys Pc International, although you’ll be capable of finding it elsewhere. This has a Center i5-6200U, 8GB of reminiscence and a 256GB SSD. Its essential disadvantage is its confined 1366 x 768-pixel display screen, even though it’s now not untypical for this class of machine.
The Pavilion 15-au074sa isn’t upgradeable, but you likely gained need to improve it. Many college students and commercial enterprise customers still have laptops with 4GB of memory and traditional hard drives, and very few customers have greater than 8GB. Many casual customers simplest have 2GB.
Somebody who spends £999.99 on a thirteen.3in HP Spectre x360 will even get a Middle i5-6200U, 8GB of memory and 256GB SSD, although the Spectre has different blessings. As an example, it has a far better 1920 x 1080-pixel IPS contact display screen, and a harder, thinner and more elegant design. What it won’t do is run Microsoft Word pretty faster.
Whether your HP Pavilion 15 will need replacing has much less to do with the specification than its sturdiness, and the way properly it’s looked after. Careless youngsters can damage a laptop along with this in 12 months, via repeatedly selecting it up by using the display screen – which breaks the hinges – or dropping it on hard ground. If nicely cared for, a Core i5 laptop needs to live to tell the tale A-stages and university use.
Inexpensive options There are, of course, lots of cheaper options. For a few examples, see my current solution, Which computer ought to I buy my YouTube-friendly 14-yr-antique? Reasonably-priced laptops have a whole lot slower processors, simplest 4GB of memory and rotating hard drives so that they may be no longer necessarily higher price. However, a machine including an Asus X540LA with a Middle i3-5005U, 4GB of memory and 1TB hard drive (£305) might be powerful sufficient for maximum college students.
If you want to recollect a disposable entry-level choice, examine the HP Pavilion x2 removable. This has a quad-Middle Intel Atom Z8300, 2GB of memory and 64GB of eMMC Flash reminiscence for £219.ninety five. Try to avoid models with 32GB of storage because Windows 10 is probably going to be re-mounted twice a 12 months.
Windows laptop
The Pavilion x2 is an ultra-transportable that doubles as a 10in tablet has a usable keyboard and feels durable for the charge. It’s my first concept When each person asks for a Reasonably-priced laptop for a kid.
That’s an entirely uncommon question these days. However, the stock solution stays the same: choose the one that does what you need for a fee you are inclined to pay. Because you don’t appear to have any particular requirements, and also you haven’t given me a budget, you’ll decide. Your money, your preference.
However, human beings tend to like what they know, and they are averse to change. In case you are “an entirely reasonable Computer person” then switching to Mac OS X might contain a few relearning. (Of path, it’s the identical for Mac users going the alternative manner, which – no matter your daughter’s claim – a few do.)
Switching charges
If you have been beginning from scratch, you’d have nothing to lose. As a Computer user, However, switching includes giving up whatever Windows expertise you have got and investing time in gaining knowledge of a new device. Whether this matter relies upon on how nicely Windows.
The switching fees consist of locating new programs to replace something you’re the use of on Windows and uploading your old data into your new machine. This could save you groups from switching, and it may make lifestyles tough for hobbyists with unique hobby software that Mac’s lack.
Then again, it can be a non-problem for most typical consumers, due to the trend closer to web offerings. The more stuff you do online in a browser, the simpler it is to interchange platforms.
There’s additionally a financial value to switching, because the popular Home windows gadget is a lot cheaper than the average Mac, specifically In case you component within the cost of AppleCare. Of route, the more money does buy you a faster, higher-made machine, as it ought to. However you may be purchasing capabilities you don’t need, or can’t truly manage to pay for. A £one hundred fifty-£350 computer might meet your desires; However, Apple doesn’t promote laptops at those prices.
