I wasn't in the fandom for mcc 7 but I've heard a lot of people talk about how toxic people got over it. If you feel like it, can you give us newbies a rundown on what exactly happened?
I wrote about it a bit in the tags here, but essentially, there was drama on two fronts: sbi and the dteam.
on the dream front, this was the first mcc with any major technical glitches, which also happened to be the mcc where the dream/techno rivalry was at its strongest, and dream really wanted the win. at one point, battle box (a minigame) had to be restarted, which dream seemed to believe favored sbi/other teams, and them the audience voted (which dream had just barely won) somehow glitched and declared the one sbi had voted for as the winner. this was just bad coincidence and ultimately didn’t have an impact, but dream got really upset and didn’t really know how to handle that yet, and his fans started sending death threats to scott smajor and co.
It wasn’t particularly serious, but got blown way out of proportion by fans and the fact that this was the first time anything like this had occured.
on the sbi front, I mostly explained in the tags, but techno really wanted the win as well, and had put a lot of work into prepping. not only had dream put out a video about how he had outperformed techno in mcc6, but this was og sbi’s (wilbur techno phil) last chance to team before they were separated. I mean, techno basically rigged buildmart, they had actually done practice streams, techno had changed his skin for the first time basically ever. so they really wanted the win.
however, sometimes this manifested in insinuating wilbur wasn’t pulling his weight, or at least joking about it. now wilbur, for those unaware, is actually quite competitive and tries his best for mcc, and seemed to be actually pretty bitter about the jokes. they were mostly bickering like normal, but tension was there. this only escalated in the battlebox round, where a glitch allowed wilbur to blow his own teammate up with tnt in the waiting room which techno was upset about, but wilbur thought he had said it would be a good idea etc etc. essentially, the vibes were very off for a usually very chill pairing.
by the skin of their teeth, sbi pulls into second place by smashing hitw and gets into the finals. techno is straight up carrying dodgebolt, taking pretty much all of the shots, and they’re up 2-1, until it somehow gets tied 2-2. then, techno is immediately taken out, followed by cpk, leaving only phil and wilbur, while techno screams to just feed arrows to phil. they opt instead to both shoot at the same time, miss, allowing the opposing hbomb to clutch and win the whole tournament.
afterwards, everyone is pretty clearly upset, wilbur especially (not like crying, just somber). then, techno leaves the vc to talk to dream about teaming, and that’s the last time he would talk to wilbur and phil for a month and a half. mans just straight up disappeared to train for the duel and win the potato war, and never put wilbur’s name down to team again, despite wilbur seemingly wanting to. this isn’t to say they were on bad terms, like they’re still really good friends, but for reference: they teamed together for six mccs straight, and then never again. it was truly wild, and the most ‘toxic’ mcc ever got- the vod is still uncomfortable to watch from dream or techno.
