MP-24 Star Saber: Lush, but still lacking
Ok, now I have something to say. We’re starting from vehicle mode though because the build-up to the full form of Star Saber is worth it.
                Released in 2015, MP-24 Star Saber was the first full update of the character, bringing back every feature of the original toy while also adapting his on screen look from the Victory anime in spectacular fashion. This obviously extends to his alt mode, the completed V-Star dwarfing anything around it while its unique form factor further helps set it apart. The landing gear aren’t great though, the hinges holding them in place too weak to support its weight most of the time. They fold back up from it just sitting there. Saber’s separate jet mode is substantially less immediately impressive, but it still carries a quaint charm.

Transformation to robot mode is a simple affair of pulling out the legs and unfolding the arms a bit. The only major changes from the original are small things like flipping out the feet and untucking his forearms. The Brainmaster feature was reworked to give him a neck swivel, albeit a stiff one, and make the titular gimmick robot smaller. The Brainmaster itself simply sits inside the chest, acting as a support to push the face into place when you close the panel. The head and inner robot are completely detached, rather than the face being inside it.

Articulation wise, Saber is good but nothing substantial. He comes with opening hands, a bend at the elbow and a swivel just above it, and his shoulders are on a hinge that connects to a swivel on the body. His legs though… he doesn’t have proper hips. You can spread his legs apart and that’s it. His thighs swivel just below those “hips” and his shins swivel again below the knees. He lacks any kind of ankle tilt in this mode, but his feet are sculpted at an angle to compensate. Don’t even try for anything but a static standing pose. You can get him moderately stoic at best. His legs and complete lack of a waist swivel make it a futile effort that will leave him looking unnatural and awkward. He is very handsome though. Overall lacking for a Masterpiece release but considering the features at play and the fact that I doubt anyone is here for just him, it’s not a huge deal.

Saber’s transformation to Star Saber is mechanically simple but filled with spectacle. Saber is the weaker half of this equation, needing you to partially transform him into jet mode then make him a cube. The V-Star is where the bulk of the fun lies. Unfolding the legs and sliding the arms down feels great. Getting him back is even more fun thanks to some buttons needed to unlock his legs. Slotting Saber in can be tricky thanks to an additional set of tabs that need a fair bit of force, but he’s also (mostly) secure after that. The chestplate/legs don’t tab in anywhere, but it’s held up fine by ratchets. Then, to complete the look, you just need to put on his helmet and watch in awe as the face plate flips down. The completed result is a tall, slender robot mode that feels like it came off the screen. It’s not quite the same effect as say, the MP Beast Wars figures, which from photos alone look like the actual models come to life, but the proportions from the anime are realized well enough to still capture Star Saber’s essence perfectly. This is helped by the superb color separation, most of which isn’t thanks to paint. The majority of his different colors are pieces of cast plastic. This even extends to Saber, leaving the Brainmaster as the piece of this set with the most paint. Ironic, considering its size. While this decision likely impacted a few other parts of the figure that we’ll touch on in a second, it does mean that he’s incredibly durable. There’s almost no paint to chip. My only real complaint about the colors is the chrome on the chest. It is gold, but it’s fairly faint and looks almost silver most of the time.

For the combined mode’s articulation, it’s a step up from base Saber in every way. His arms are fully flexible with a double set of elbows and swivels, and he has a butterfly joint at the shoulders for those sword poses. His hands can still open, but now his index finger can move separately. No joints in the fingers though, they’re locked into a curl. He has a decent ab crunch, and his front hip skirts move out of the way to grant his legs a full range of forward movement. His side and back skirts are a different story, both being molded as a single, static piece. You can get at most two clicks of his ratchets going out or back. His leg swivels are in the same places as Saber’s, except now he has actual hips, which still helps immensely despite their limitations. Then, to cap it off, he has just… the most pathetic ankle tilt. It’s barely there. Don’t be mistaken, you can still get Star Saber into plenty of good-looking poses, but you really have to fight his legs and either the awkward angles they can create or the angles they won’t go into. He doesn’t much like holding his sword either, as his grip comes undone rather easily.

Overall, this is a fine release, even going on 9 years strong, but it’s clear to see where some of his faults lie. Not bad by any means! It just could have been better. All those extra parts for color separation didn’t leave much room for things like fully realized joints, and he was designed with a potential MP Victory Leo in mind. Because they just haaaave to do Victory Saber. Even though it’s the worst super mode. The need to be stable with extra weight probably had more to do with some of his stiffness than raw parts count. Maybe they could splurge on the solid plastic colors because they accommodated for Victory Leo. I can’t tell you. It does all leave him very sturdy though, an aspect that the MP line has somewhat lost over the years, from what I understand. He doesn’t feel like he’s going to break whenever you’re handling him, which you need to do if you want some good-looking poses. You’re encouraged to play with him because of his awkward joints and you’re not discouraged from doing so thanks to a near complete lack of paint chipping and solid construction. Even if you don’t care much for posing your figures, he’s still really good. He still looks amazing. Handling him doesn't carry an innate sense of terror, unlike the subsequent Haslab Legacy release. And he’s not a 35-year-old Japan exclusive toy. Just a 9-year-old one.

okay so jessies backstory is going to be pretty similar to her comic canon along with a few of my own head canons sprinkled in. the biggest change will be some alterations to her pregnancy backstory, which i’ll explain based on what cal and i plotted for jessica and carol.
JESSICAS CHILDHOOD BACKSTORY & ESCAPING HYDRA // ( has most of the triggers here, pls skip over this if it’s likely to trigger you <3 )
jessica’s father was a hydra scientist, who used her as his lab rat, experimented on her, and is responsible for her powers.
when jessicas mother was pregnant with her, she was exposed to her father’s experiments. in nothing short of a miracle, jessica was born healthy, or so they thought.
when jessica was a kid, her exposure to the uranium on her family’s estate made her incredibly sick to the point of near death, coupled with what would be revealed as a subtle DNA match of wundagore widow DNA in her blood, and so her father injected her with more DNA of the wundagore widow to try and turn her into his precious experiment that’d salvage years worth of failed research
while her father was abusing her mother in front of her, jessicas bioelectricity activated and she attacked her father, then fell unconscious
when she awoke, she was naked and surrounded by male hydra agents, now a full grown teenager.
hydra brainwashed her into perceiving all of her loved ones as demented creatures. they also had her manipulated by one of their male agents into believing he loved her. this was her first boyfriend.
hydra trained her in multiple styles of martial arts. she was personally trained by the taskmaster and worked under the tutelage of one of hydras supremes, otto vermis.  
jessicas first assignment was to infiltrate shield and murder nick fury. but shield showed her the truth of what hydra had done to her and of her origin story
jessica betrayed hydra, escaped, dyed her hair brown, and ran away. she lived briefly in london where she connected with mordred the mystic and a sorcerer named the magnus, the latter of whom taught her how to acclimate back to civilization.
she moved to LA, where she made her first friend, lindsey, in a therapy group. she worked as a bounty hunter in LA until moving in with lindsey in san fcanscico.
shield and hydra both started trying to track her down. hydra found her, and her boyfriend confessed to having manipulated her so she’d stay loyal to hydra. in a 24-1 battle, jessica murders taskmaster, her ex boyfriend, and the other hydra agents.
nick fury again attempts to reach out to jessica, this time telling her he knows her parents are alive. she finds her mother brutally murdered on the bed and finds her father’s research
jessica then goes undercover to seduce otto, pervy old man, to try and discover information about her origin and about her father. they try to kill her, and reveal that madame hydra wont be happy when its presumed jessica’s dead. (more on this below)
she decides to infiltrate hydra again, this time she finds her father, and when it’s revealed he only cares about her because she’s his experiment, jessica’s conditioning kicks in. she reveals that hydra tortured her for her entire life, leaves the facility, and then meets the next legacy of her father’s experiments: other spider-mutated girls, just like jessica. she blows the facility up and leaves.
she went back to her place with lindsey and worked in San Fran as a PI. there, she earned a reutation as the dark angel of san fransisco.
DEPOWERED & REPLACED // ( mentions of suicide attempts & mental illness, kidnapping )
during her time as a PI, jessica went on several adventures. for one thing she found for herself an archenemy in Morgan le fay. In one of these particular magic-related brawls, she was left powerless.
she helped out the x-men by letting them move in with her
she continued working as a PI, powerless, even doing investigation on the criminal territory of madripoor
as her powers started coming back, she teamed up with the heroes for hire. she also worked with jessica jones on a case involving mattie franklin.
however, her powers kept fluctuating, and so she accepted a deal with madame hydra herself, who’d become obsessed with jessica because she became convinced she’s jessica mother when morgan le fay convinced her she was meriem drew. as part of the deal, jessica had to join shield as a double-agent to give information to hydra. fury figured it out and used jessica to spread false information for hydra
at this time though skrull queen veranke kidnapped and replaced jessica. jessica was held a prisoner of war on the skrull’s ship for two years. and most everyone regarded jessica cruelly after she got back, because they were reminded of queen veranke, who was responsible for the skrull invasion.  
she became extremely depressed this time, and attempted suicide by venom blasting herself in the head
jessica joined sword, the european version of shield, and began hunting down skrulls
the rest of jessicas adventures after this time involve her working as an avenger and dealing with the spider-verse. there she seduced Morlun and became his “lover,” gathering the information that would let them defeated the inheritors. she was killed during the secret wars, but the timeline was undone.
PREGNANCY & PRESENT //
jessica did get pregnant, but instead it was as a surrogate for carol’s baby. gerry is therefore carol’s biologically.
the rest of the pregnancy, giving birth on a skrull ship she was invading with carol at her side, remains canon
she decided to work part-time as a hero so she could be around more for gerry but also show him what it means to be a hero.
now she works as a freelance PI, part-time hero, rogue shield agent, and committed mom. she’s a full time Spider-Mom though and wants to love on all the spiderlings always.

High School Sweetheart Dart GT
In the months leading up to his 17th birthday, Don Schwenker had his sights set on a second-hand Mustang. To that end, he and his father went to visit a used car dealership, Colletti’s in Babylon, New York. He didn’t find the Mustang he envisioned, but a Dodge Dart GT caught his father’s eye. “He said to me, ‘Buy this, it has a V-8 and you can go fast with it’,” remembers Schwenker. “My father gave me $100 to put down, and Mr. Coletti, the owner of the dealership, allowed me to pay it off $50 at a time. By November 15, 1975 it was mine!”
Schwenker paid a grand total of $454.25 for the Dart, which had 71,317 miles on the clock. Though bone-stock when acquired, it didn’t stay that way for long. While it would be decades before substantial modifications were made, like just about every other teenager in that era, Schwenker did what he could afford, dressing his ride up with Cragar mag wheels, Hooker headers, and air shocks.
A few years later, the Dart was hit pretty hard from behind and though his friends thought he should just scrap the wreck since it would have been easy to find and buy another one, Schwenker had already developed an attachment to the car and was determined to have it repaired. After getting it back from the body shop, he had his 340-cid engine rebuilt with new W-2 Dodge heads. Before even driving the car with the new engine however, he wanted to make some radical changes.
“It was a Saturday afternoon in 1980 when I watched the movie Mad Max, and saw the blower on the car he was driving. As soon as I heard the blower whining, I was hooked. Then, right after the movie ended, my friend pulled up in front of my house with his blown ’32 Ford coupe and yelled, “let’s go cruising.” After 5 minutes in his car I went home and called my brother, who had a 1970 340 he was getting ready to rebuild for his 1970 Cuda. I had $3,500 into my newly built motor and told him to give me his motor and $1,500, and he could have my motor. He said OK, and I had the engine rebuilt for a blower, and the blower has been on my car ever since.”
In 1989, Schwenker got the itch to make more changes to his Dart, starting with new quarter-panels and back-halfing the chassis, so he brought it to SuperPro Performance Chassis. SuperPro is owned by Tommy V, a master fabricator and welder with decades of experience. Tommy V knew the whereabouts of NOS quarter-panels, put Schwenker in touch with the seller, and that got the ball rolling.
After the quarters were installed, Schwenker presented SuperPro Performance with a huge challenge. “Don wanted a true Pro Street look,” Tommy V explains, “but he insisted that I not touch the new quarter-panels, and making it even harder, he wanted to retain the car’s original back seat!” Tommy V thought long and hard about how to fit super-meaty tires without altering the quarters or eliminating the back seat, and came up with a viable plan. He modified his time-tested four-link suspension system by redesigning the front mount brackets and then fabricated completely new framerails using .120-inch wall 3×2-inch steel tubing in order to extend the wheel base by a full 3 inches. He also disassembled the Dart’s original back seat and modified the springs and frames so they’d fit perfectly between the 42×24-inch wheeltubs he made. He even managed to squeeze a six-point rollbar into the car without impacting the back seat.
Once the fabrication work was done, Schwenker turned his Dart over to Anthony DeDomenico for a complete repaint. After massaging the body to perfection DeDomenico applied two-stage urethane in the car’s original shade of green. Evidencing just how good DeDomenico’s work is, the body and paint look every bit as fantastic today as they did 28 years ago.
With the back half of the chassis, bodywork, and paint all done Schwenker drove and thoroughly enjoyed his high school hot rod for another 25 years before getting the urge to bring it to the next level. Once again, he turned to SuperPro Performance Chassis. Tommy V installed a complete Reilly MotorSports front end that included tubular control arms, Viking coilovers, and a Mustang II–style rack-and-pinion. Combined with the custom four-link rear, the car’s overall ride height is now lowered by a full 3 inches. Tommy V also fabricated a new, 10-point rollbar setup from 304 stainless. Kevin Storms at S&L Metal polished the bars to a chrome-like finish, and Tommy V completed the polishing after all welding was finished.
For stopping power that far surpasses this Dart’s factory braking system, Tommy V turned to Wilwood. Up front, six-piston Dynalite calipers forged from solid billets of aluminum squeeze 12-inch drilled and slotted rotors. At the rear, four-piston Dynalite calipers grip 11.5-inch slotted and drilled rotors.
While updating and upgrading so many other parts of the car, Schwenker decided to build a new, more powerful engine. Since he wanted to retain a blower, he entrusted the work to forced induction specialist Andy Jensen at Jensen’s Engine Technologies in Nescopeck, Pennsylvania. Though there’s no denying the magical allure of a big-block, Schwenker was focused on preserving the original feel of his Dart, so opted to stick with a 340-cid engine. Jensen started with the block that came out of Schwenker’s brother’s Barracuda back in 1980, but converted it to four-bolt mains for increased strength and durability. To complete the bottom end, he used a factory-forged crank supplemented by a host of high-quality aftermarket internals, including forged Crower rods and forged JE pistons. For increased breathing and reduced weight, Jensen went with Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum cylinder heads in place of the factory’s cast-iron heads.
A Big & Ugly hat caps the BDS 6-71 blower and Indy manifold setup atop the engine. BDS pulleys spin the blower fast enough to generate 12.2 psi of boost and a Big Stuff 3 EFI combined with Hilborn injection deliver the needed fuel. The Hilborn setup uses a total of 16 injectors, with eight on top of the blower, where the fuel spray helps cool the rotors, and eight mounted into the Indy manifold. Tommy V took care of the engine’s electrical needs and fabricated throttle linkage using ¼-inch diameter, .065-inch wall stainless tubing drilled and tapped for 10-32 rod ends from FK Rod Ends.
Wiring-meister Larry Feynman extensively reworked the Dart’s factory harnesses to make sure all electrical components get the juice they need. A plethora of electrical items, including the MSD ignition coil and box, MAP sensor, and various relays mount on an aluminum panel that Tommy V made to install out of sight under the dash. The blown and injected engine sends its twist to the Moser 9-inch rear end via a beefed-up 727 TorqueFlite. The transmission was built by Tommy Derych, a Mopar fanatic as well as a master transmission technician.
Since completing the car about two years ago, Schwenker continues to do what he’s been doing throughout the 43 years he’s owned it, which is to say he enjoys driving it at every opportunity. “This was my first car,” he reflects, “and that is, of course, very special. It’s been a part of my whole family, something that I’ve shared with my parents, Marie and Don Sr., my wife and daughters, and my brothers Tommy and Fred. And beyond that, it’s also been a big part of my friendships with all of my car buddies, including Tony Palmieri, Anthony DeDomenico, Victor Leal, and Tommy V.
