Hey i really love your blog!!! I just plucked the courage to actually send u an ask fhdjhd but GOSH i love your video edits and your gifs and your meta article posts, you're so articulate and you can explain/describe moments in a way that makes me go "oh wow, i cant believe i haven't seen it that way before!!" Haha ANYWAYS i'm just here to say that i completely agree with what all u said, Free creators might do a lil fanservice here and there for the 25 ships that exists within the fandom's circle, but rinharu's storyline is clearly the most romantic one! And i'd argue it's the one closest to being canon esp after part 1, i mean the fact that they put such an explosive emotional outburst right at the end of the second to the last movie means a lot. It's like reinforcing the fact that this series has always been about them, and everything that has happened only happened either because they met or they grew appart and miss eachother. I kinda feel like maybe.. juust maayyybe there's a chance KA wants to make the ship canon, since it's the last movie and they want to end it on a highnote maybe (bcs honestly i think the only reason they've been holding back is purely bcs of the merch sales, since they don't have a problem showing a wholesome lesbian love story in kobayashi maid dragon) butt i could be wrong, maybe i'm just overly optimistic and delusional, they could somehow ruin it and give an ending that panders to all the ships again 😅🥲, but at least there's a clear-cut guarantee that part 2 would dedicate a large portion of it fixing rin and haru's fight!!! Well, you know me, I only care for one ship, which is the only one with confirmed info that they're both actually gay and have mutual feelings for each other. There are some other ships in free! I'm fine with (those do not include Rin or Haru in them xD), but I just mostly don't care, bc after reading all the stuff, you can see that in some of those to one the other one is actually like his second option, which I just do not like. Others I just don't even see, bc again to me who witnessed great close male friendships and having two sisters who I'm very close to, I just do not see anything romantic in that.

It's not just Free! tbh, it's like any sports anime these days. They see two guys walking together, it's a ship. And like no one cares if they're just bros. Like I'd get i they did some fanservice fanservice, but like I never saw anyone in Free! crossing the line the way rinharu do. I can without thinking much name you 10 rh moments that no matter how hard you think can't be explain as being bros, but can't name one when it comes to others. I just find some ppl shipping everyone with everyone weird sometimes. It's like western fans see like some eastern actors or singers slap each other ass lovingly and they're like "oh they're fucking" I'm like "yeah, ofc all 500 of them, you're absolutely right". And Free! doesn't do anything even like that, I just do not get sometimes like what moment even brought on some ships. I'm genuinely confused. Albert and Haru? You fucking fell from a sakura tree or smth? I'm...

I'm especially confused when it comes to guys, whose character type is who I call "I only want this one and if I can't have it, then I'm ok" xD. It just always surprised me, when they try to pair up them with someone else, it's like a complete ooc.

I'm also not into this whole "well, if there are gays in this anime, than everyone there is gay". I'm like... huh. It's like with KNB and MDZS I had same feeling. It's like you have already couples there who are canon/borderline canon, why do you need another 10 who don't even interact or just don't even go there? I'm always so confused in those situations. Or like wangxian is married and some are like "no, I actually don't like it, let me write a fic when they're with other ppl". Lan Zhan... being in love or having sex with someone else? Yeah, that's not Lan Zhan, dude, you're writing about someone else. Might as well change the name at this point.

But last time I went to twitter someone had a thread about how if they make s4 of Free! they should mainly explore there Momo's angst (and no, it wasn't a joke), so I'm already like, I'm just.. nothing will surprise me no more. But I'm forever gonna be confused.

Yeah, I eel you about "going there". I mean seeing part of it, it just kinda cemented my confusion, bc I do not get how it can be considered platonic. We were just discussing since yesterday with @freeseafirefly how I now even more perplexed and do not understand how they will resolve it without going into relationship territory. It's just our point here is that like... no one forced them to go there (I mean its not like this whole fandom has some wild expectations or anything already), we were waiting or our usual friendship and swimming and maybe tiny conflict about struggles of pro-careers and some usual rh implications (maybe all the rh gay in dramas as always). Not some pure fanfiction coming to life here haha.

Like why I'm laughing is bc I twice used in my "fics" bringing up him leaving Haru as a force to push the confession, bc there's no way if he adresses this it won't lead to this. And now we not only have this (bc Haru just basically layed it out there), but an actual scene of him playing on their feelings for each other and a literal image of Rin leaving and "taking Haru's heart with him" to the point when he's for the first time in his life openly crying on the ground. And it's not like this scene can be interpreted as anything else, the whole fandom talks same, bc the whole fight was just about them, what Haru said was just about them, there's a literal boom of his heart getting out of his chest, before he falls and now he's heartless.

So our question is like... why go there?

It's like some say that they might still resolve it with "they're special to each other" and swimming, but still like we already knew that, there was no reason to go that far is what I'm saying. And to think that it was planned since forever giving the clues is like... ???

The whole spoon theme also throw me on the loop because like, lets be honest, it's wedding themed. And that part of the interview about part 2 there also made me go...?????? Because I mean, huh?

This is just all in all very interesting turn of events to say the least. I do not see the point of all of this if its not what I think it is, esp after seeing tweets like "even I see a rh wedding and I'm mh T_T". It's just all very unsubtle, that's why we're confused.

Like who knows, maybe we'll really by some magic turn of events get lucky and they really decided that since its the ending, it's okay to go for it. But I also don't wanna to hype myself much, I'm already really happy with it, just bc again, this scene already proves all of my points.

And yeah, I'm sure they'll pander to everyone, bc it's the end and etc and we have to handle everything on the good note and there's a whole line of ppl who's obsessed with us, esp with Haru xD, but like bromance pandering and romance pandering are different things, you know *wiggles eyebrows* and u know who always gets the second one.

ok like. if i may ask since i believe you have good takes on things. what in the hell is going on with beastars. i read all of it like a few months ago and i was consistently baffled by like the political implications of everything. i couldnt tell what the intentions were or what was allegorical or whatever. its ok if u dont really like have an answer to this like if u just read it for the characters and stuff but im just curious as to if u have a take on it

well i think the thing that makes beastars unique among “Animals Are People” universes is that not EVERYTHING is a metaphor. allegories can carry some heavy weight in stories, but people are not animals and insisting that every animal thing has a human parallel can easily become all kinds of problematic. paru itagaki is wise because she didn’t try to do that. she had specific things she wanted to make allegorical but she also just genuinely loves drawing animals and loves animal behaviors! if she wanted to write about humans she would have done that

for instance, many aspects of interspecies relationships are obviously supposed to be allegorical for interracial couples. i.e. not being able to legally marry (in certain circumstances), being discriminated against by friends, family, and society as a whole, the way leano and melon were treated growing up, the way gosha lost his best friend for marrying a wolf. but other parts - like melon’s instincts and sense of taste - that’s just weird fantasy animal stuff and trying to make it fit into a metaphor will just make your head hurt.

i also think the devouring is kind of an ever-changing metaphor, which is why it can be so confusing. when applied to legosi and haru, it could be a “men are violent towards women” thing, when applied to the black market it’s probably a drug addiction thing, and when applied to legosi and louis...fuck if i know. they’re literally just gay

louis’s initial anger at legosi for shunning his privilege as a large carnivore is an example of something that CAN be directly translated to human terms. louis has had to fight his entire life to be respected, and the fact that even carnivores look up to him is an accomplishment most herbivores will never experience. but legosi literally just exists as a wolf - a shy antisocial one, too! -and everyone respects him immediately. but instead of using his privilege for good, he just wishes he was never born. of course louis is upset with him

the scene with sebun and legosi in the shoe store is a PERFECT example of this - she’s more than 10 years older than him, college educated, AND actually knows these guys; meanwhile legosi is a poor teenage high school dropout  and who do the carnivores listen to? him. 

gosha complicates things. he is a carnivore, but because he is a poisonous reptile, even other carnivores shun him. he is not allowed in restaurants without taking certain precautions, and being in public with his grandson is a hazard to them both because of how often he is verbally or violently attacked for no other reason than existing as a komodo dragon. the discrimination fits, but not everything does. there are probably arguments to be made about what poisonous reptiles represent but i’m not gonna get into that

but the stuff about haru’s intincts, and feeling calm when touching your own species, and canines chasing balls, and komodo poison being useless against family members, etc etc...that’s all just fantasy stuff. and that’s okay! and that’s good! trying to force metaphors onto shit like that is why so many other animals-as-people stories fail

so things like sebun's story and the descrimination against interspecies couples and the other examples i provided are very obvious allegories to racism and i think anyone who decides that paru didnt mean it that way is being wilfully ignorant. i also think that people who try to find meaning in the purely fantastical and/or literally animalistic traits that are completely unique to the beastars universe will just end up confused and probably won't enjoy the series very much. sometimes sloth tattoo artists accidentally kill people because they are so slow and thats just how it is

anyway! to answer your question yes beastars is a political series but it’s also literally just a silly manga about animals who eat each other because paru started writing it when she was in middle school and started publishing it when she was 22 and she thought it’d be cool. i like the writing but mostly i read it because it’s fucking insane and the art is great and the characters are cool

Chapter 4: All Mine

Present Day

Brooklyn, 2021.

Y/N’s POV

As I felt his peck on my cheek, i turn around blushing.

"Baby!!" I shout and hugged him tightly. He's here! He's home. If you guys are wondering, yup, I'm dating him now. I'm dating THE KIM SEOKJIN. It's been 2 years and we're still going strong!

He hugged me tightly and pats my hair. "Aigoo~ my jagi really do miss me? Maybe i should left you more than a week," he teases me and pinch my cheek.

I stare at him angrily. "What does that suppose to mean?? I'm going crazy without you and you're leaving me..? that's just mean," I pouted. So what if i'm being a cutie with MY boyfriend?

Jackson looks a bit annoyed at my clinginess and Youngji sat there giggling at him. "Gosh i wanted to puke right here," he stated.

"Don't mind him babe, he's just jealous," i said to Seokjin. He laugh and sit beside me. How much i miss his presence and scent.

Seokjin had known all my friends. Hanbin, Jackson, Youngji, all of them the moment he enters my life. He started to ask questions about me when he first befriended me. I was shocked at first, but i opened up to him because i trusted him. He is my first boyfriend after all.

We always hang here at Mochi's Restaurant. It was the first place me and Seokjin have a proper date. haha. And it was the first place Hanbin had bought me and Youngji when we were freshmen here. So we figure, we can meet here anytime we want to hangout. It's our place. Even the owners knew us all :D

Seokjin looks at Dahyun. "Who's this special lady Hanbin?" He asks as he saw Dahyun sitting beside Hanbin. He must figure it out since Hanbin becomes all shy and quiet.

Dahyun giggles and said, "I'm his girlfriend. Nice to meet you, I'm Dahyun. You must be Y/N’s boyfriend?" She asks. I blush when Seokjin looks at me while i look down. He peck my cheeks. Gawdddd~ that's soooo cheesy.

"Yup, the one and only! I'm Seokjin. Nice to meet you Dahyun. Wow Hanbin, keeping such a secret now huh?" He asks making Hanbin blush and we all laugh at him getting flustered. I can see that he really likes her.

We had a nice chat that evening. Seokjin constantly held and squeeze my hand showing his affection towards me. I smiled and squeeze his hand back. When its finally to go, we bid goodbye towards the guys and went home to my apartment.

"Dahyun seems like a nice girl. She fits Hanbin really well, i like her eye smile. Can you believe that 1 week Hanbin was in Japan he met her there? Wow, that's what i called destiny," I said to Seokjin. He smiles as he enters my apartment.

I opened the fridge. My boyfriend must be really hungry. Although we've eaten, i know Seokjin. He always felt hungry. All.... the time.

Though i didn't knew much about cooking, i started to learn it after i dated him. One fun facts about him was that he is a foodholic. My mom often said 'A way to win a man's heart is by his stomach' and i realized that after i met Seokjin. He is a also a good chef. So, bonus. How lucky am i to have such a wonderful man?

I started to heat the kimchi i made when a pair of arms hugs my body from behind. His arms was wrapped around my waist as he puts his chin on top of my head. He is way taller than me after all.

"Jagi.. i miss you ..don't have to cook, i'm full already, let's go to sleep." He said to me sleepily. I smiled. He must be tired from all those plane ride.

I close the stove and cupped his face. "Really? Come on babe, let's get you to bed, you must be really tired don't you, love?" I ask. He pouted cutely while nodding.

I put one of his arm around my shoulder and he cutely clings to me all the way to the bedroom. I put him on the bed and i lay down beside him, not minding to change my clothes.

We lay facing each other as we stared into each other's eyes that night. There's no word that were uttered but we felt comfortable even that we didn't talk. I trace his beautiful sculptured face with my fingers, slowly from his forehead,

to his eyes,

to his nose...

And finally land my finger on his lips.

He smiles as he try to bite my finger cutely. I'm so happy i met him. The day Seokjin asks me out was the best day of my life. Nobody ever asks me out before, i was hesitant, yes at first, but he assures me, he'll take care of me and be the man i deserve. I'm glad i bump into him 2 years ago.

After all the wait, i finally get my happy ending. Seokjin was MY perfect man. He's MY prince charming. He's my other half and i'm absolutely positive about a guy this time. This time, i won't get broken hearted.

Seokjin's POV

I stare at Y/N’s sleeping figure. She looks so soft and fragile like this. God i wish the whole world knew how much i'm in love with her. She's... different in every way. Ways that i can't even explain myself.

Y/N is more than perfect. I'm glad i get a hold of her. I kiss her lips gently trying not to wake her up from her deep sleep. I remember how i ask her out but she hesitates at first, she looks as if she's afraid to fall in love, but i begs her to give me a chance and prove her how much i'll make her happy. And here we are, already in a 2 years relationship.

Y/N is different. She's unlike any other girls I've met before. Y/N doesn't like to give up and she works hard on what she wants. She attracts me with her bright personality that i love so much. She may look though outside but inside, she's sensitive. Her caring side stood out the most and even that she's a bit hot tempered sometimes, i always be the water to her fire. She's an amazing girl.

So when Youngji tells me about her old life and not to play with her heart, i promise myself that i'll take care of her fragile heart and not to toy with it. I never knew a bright person like her had a very painful past that made it difficult for her to fall in love again. So i did my best to heal the wounds other's gave her and teach her that love is wonderful.

Y/N’s POV

I look at Seokjin as he walked in the apartment, groceries in hands. He smiles as he slips off his shoes in the doorway and close the door behind.

"Babe, what did you buy so much? It's not like we can eat all this tonight," i giggled. He chuckled and put the groceries on the kitchen and kiss my forehead.

"It's for you Jagi, a food stock whenever you're hungry, Jackson complains that you keep on cooking food at his place because your allowance money is late this month, so whenever i'm away, cook this OK? I don't want my chubby girlfriend to be a skeleton next time i met her."

I'm melting, seriously. Why does he have to be such a sweetheart boyfriend? I'm pretty sure i did something good on my past life to have an amazing boyfriend like him.

He begins to wears his pink apron that i gave him as a birthday present and start to cook something.

"Babe, let me cook it's okay, go rest," i told him But he won't budge.

"Jagi, you know i love you right? But as much as i love you, i had to admit, your cooking skills are a bit lacking, and i want you to eat something edible," he laugh and winks. I pouted, what's that's suppose to mean?! I know i'm not a good cook, at least i can cook something edible OK.

"Babe, you should acknowledge that my cooking skills are different that other's, i'm too expert to cook it more edible," i joked and he laughs hardly while cutting the onions.

He smiles defeatedly. "Okay, okay, you win. At least you can make the best kimchi." I smile widely. I was washing the dishes when he asks me how's my family.

"Eomma? She's fine, she told me Haru's boyfriend proposed last week and Hanna Unnie is 2 months pregnant," I told him.

"Woaa.. that means we're going to be an uncle and aunt soon! Yay!" He stated happily. I looked at him.

"We?" I ask smilingly. He nodded and kisses my forehead.

Seokjin had met my family last summer. I was afraid that he might get a bit shocked after meeting Eomma and my two loud sisters but he's more than happy to meet them. After all, i'm a family girl, if he doesn't like Eomma, that's a MAJOR turn off for me. But Seokjin sincerely loves them and always ask about them caringly like he's my husband already.

I told him about Appa who passed away when i was in middle school. He felt sorry and told me that i'm a strong girl for having to get through those difficult time until i manage to get to where i am today. He said he will be responsible for taking care of me when he marries me. Ahhhh.. Heart attack.

I grins and turn off the pipe.

"What about your Eomma and Appa? And your Hyung? Did he get enlisted in the military already?" I ask him.

He nodded. "Yeah, Eomma and Appa is busy travelling while Hyung is preparing for his enlistment. So that's pretty much it." I chuckled. He always argue with his hyung but i know deep down he loves him.

After he finish cooking and i prepared the table, we sit there, having a candle light dinner sort of date. I wasn't really into romantic things but Seokjin is such a Shakespeare.

We talked about a lot of things, how's college for me, and his exchange student programmed, our families and what's going on lately. I felt comfortable, opening up to him about a lot of things.

"When is your next exchange student programmed? And how long?" I asks him. He stopped eating and sighed. By the way he looks at me with sad eyes, i know he's upset.

"Jagiya, I'm sorry, this time, it's in Australia and it will be up to three months, i'm sorry sweetheart," he apologize. I knew it was sad. Our relationship is preoccupied with our dreams. But i understand, this is what we choose.

I held his cheeks. "It's okay Oppa, i get it, besides when we finish our studies, we can get a better living and at that time, we'll always be together, just don't go flirt with another girl okay? Sometimes i'm afraid that you might fall in love with someone else while you're away," I pouts.

He kisses me, giving me a sign that he's assuring me. "Jagi, i can't even look at other girl when all i think is you, so please don't doubt me, all i want is you," he kisses my knuckles.

He stand up and told me to wait while he went into our room. I wonder what he's been preparing. My man is full of surprises sometimes. I waited at the kitchen when he appears, hiding something behind him. I look at him curiously.

"Ooo what's that? May i see it?" I asks him like a five years old.

He laugh softly. "Well, since you ask nicely," and showed me what he's been hiding.

It was a pretty, nice sunflower bouquet and a small red box in it. I can't contain my happiness as i hug him tightly.

"Ca-can't..b..-breath," he chocked and i release him while lightly giggling, "Sorry." He always give me nice new sunflowers because sunflowers are the only types of flowers that i'm not allergic to.

"Wow, what's this for Babe? Did you do something again?" I ask him playfully. He looks at me gently and shake his head.

"Then what for?" I tested him. He open the box in the middle and i'm surprised that in it, was a beautiful ring that he talked about giving me 8 months ago.

He slips the ring on my fingers and kiss it softly.

"I love you Jagi. This is my promise ring to you that even though i'm not around, my heart is always beating for you. Keep it safely and if you doubt me, just hold the ring and you'll know that i'm always thinking of you," He said romantically.

I'm so moved by Seokjin. He's very mature and he's such a gentleman in this relationship, sometimes i wonder how did i end up having him.

I was tearing when he wipes it off.

"Happy Anniversary Jagi, I love you." he kisses me.

"Happy Anniversary too Oppa. I love you more." I answer.

2021

Heyya!

Jadi recap tahun 2020 terlewatkan ya, huf its okay. Mostly its about Covid-19 anyway..

So 2021.....a year of new hope. Di tahun 2020, ada beberapa rencana yang sudah gue set untuk 2021 despite the shitty pandemic. On the verge of 2020 ending, I remember I hope 2021 will be a lot better than 2020, pandemic is over (it is not btw) and we all can live our lives the way we used to. Well, 2021? it didn’t happened. Pandemic, masks, high death tolls... still happening. I lost 3 of my distant families and 1 of my senior colleague because of the pandemic, i was heartbroken. But 2021 is not about heartbroken, its about starting a new pages for me, new hope. Here goes four of most relevant things that happened in my 2021..

The Wedding

YES, i got married. With my long time boyfriend, the pitcher. Man.... how do I start? I write about him a lot in this blog, i know. From the first day i dated him, there is a tiny feeling in my mind that i will end up marrying him, i just know. And its true, the universe made it happen! hehe. The day is 9 October 2021. Kita udah prepare since more than a year. Ngurusin nikahan itu...ribet, karena banyak kepala yang harus di please despite I too have my own dream about my wedding day. Tapi selama masa persiapan itu, alhamdulillah, tidak ada kendala berarti and there is no problem we can’t fix, so yeah. Di pagi hari pernikahan gue itu, everything seems well managed. The decor is already set, guests have arrived, streaming service is ready to start. When i notice, my entrance song is not yet right somehow. Jadi pas gue di make up itu WO nanya mau lagu apa, gue blg apa aja deh soalnya ga nyiapin, lagu padang juga boleh. Then on my way to the venue, i realize “freak juga lagu nya kl lagu daerah”. Gue minta ganti ke WO, yg standar aja deh lagu nya can’t help falling in love, mereka oke. Trus kayak sedetik lagi i walk down the isle, gue berubah pikiran, minta diganti lagi jadi a thousand years, wkwk. But......daym man, gue ga salah pilih lagu. When i walk down the aisle with my twin sister, my first step down the aisle i was surpised...the decor is really beyond my expectation. The song + the decor of my akad venue is surreal... then i saw my fiancee at the end of the aisle, crying. It was the most beautiful moment in my life, yes, the most beautiful. Even writing about that moment still gives me shivers. Later at the night we held the wedding reception, it was beautiful, intimate. As we only invites those who are closest to us. 9 October 2021 could not be more perfect that i was imagined. And now, i’m a wife!

The Roadtrip

After the wedding, my husband and i went on a Java Roadtrip. We visited several cities in Java Island. First stop is Magelang, we stayed at a fancy heritage hotel and the hubby gets to visit Borobudur temple for the first time (yayness!). Abis itu kita ke Jogja, it was le hubby’s first time as well to visit Jogja, and ofkors gue bangga menjadi yg pertama membawa dia ke Jogja. Man, Jogja and its culinary was something else! First time for me juga coba-coba makanan yang bener bener gue pengen coba daridulu. Kemudian the 10 hours drive! HAHA nekat bener ya kita orang nyetir non stop ke Banyuwangi dari Jogja. It was really really fun though for me yang suka liatin jalanan kalo naik mobil, pemandangannya aduh top notch lah. We stayed in a popular hotel in Banyuwangi, we also got to experience both beaches and mountain in Banyuwangi. We went to Tabuhan Island, a remote island between Java and Bali. Its also the first time for him to snorkle hehe. The next day we went hiking Ijen Crater. Started so early at 2 A.M., i have been there, but again, its his first time. Super unforgettable journey in Banyuwangi indeed. After Banyuwangi we head back and visited Malang. Malang was beautiful. Gue pernah ke Malang sebelumnya but this time.... i don’t know. There is something about the city i fell in love to. Rasanya pengen menetap disana.. OH AND I TICKED MY BUCKET LIST, I GOT TO VISIT AIR TERJUN TUMPAK SEWU! Aduh bener bener terharu. After Malang we went to Solo. DAN KECELEKAAN DISANA, HAHA. Not a serious one though, our car got hit from behind and yeah so on. We go to this beautiful place called Rumah Atsiri, man lagi-lagi tempat yang bener bener surreal lah pokoknya. Then we go to Semarang for a night. We go to Lawang Sewu, eat tahu gimbal and yeah head back to Jakarta. It was really a fun trip, if we have the opportunity, we surely will do it again. But next, to Bali as well.

The Promotion

Well, I got promoted!!! Alhamdulillah it is a really significant raise. The promotion i wanted all along. God is the greatest. And oh, someone decided to become a santa and i got a salary adjustment last christmas, and also A SIGNIFICANT ONE... I am a lucky kid, after all. Thank you, God.

The Kid

Here’s the thing about children. Yes, we want to have some, someday. I mean, there is no rush to have them immediately after marriage. We agree that we are not trying so hard, and also would not reject them if the God have trusted us to have one. In the 2nd month of our marriage, i was late for a week. One morning, i tested, and it confirms that i’m pregnant. We were thrilled. We shared the news to our parents, they are super happy. We are planning to having it checked by the doctor the next week. But then things started to go south, i bleed a lot. We were so panicked, we went to the doctor. The doctor said that it is a threatened miscarriage. I am utterly gutted by the doctor diagnosis. 12 December 2021, i lost my 6 weeks baby without knowing for a week before the doctor visit. We were sad, yeah, but we have accepted the fact whole-heartedly. We named the kid, Grogu. Yeah, we love Grogu from The Mandalorian series a lot. When remembering that horrid week, i think a lot. I know its meant to be that way, and God will send another angel if he thinks we are ready. But, deeply i wish i could have done something to keep it. 

Kid, thank you for staying and fighting for 6 weeks in Ibu’s belly. I wish i could’ve known sooner that we’re having you. So that we could love and stay with you longer. Kid, thank you for the lessons you give to us, we are forever debted. We love you, Kid. Forever and always on our thoughts and prayers.

Top 10 Yuri Manga Without A School Setting

There’s a certain formula for producing bad yuri manga- default highschool setting (+1 if it’s all-girls and all-girls somehow equals all-gay), a unhealthy relationship dynamic, unrealistic-but-stock characters (the shy protagonist and the perfect student council president), strict gender roles of butch x femme, males are never present, you get the idea. There’s lots of great yuri out there that takes place in highschool, but I’ll admit that the saturation of bad stuff has tainted my view of the setting. 

That said, regardless of your views on yuri’s default setting, here’s the Top 10 Yuri Manga with a fresh change of scenery!

10. Gouhou Yuri Fuufu Hon

On some days, we just don’t have it in us for serious, literary stuff. I want this list to include cute and relaxing sugary stuff too, and Gouhou Yuuri Fuufu Hon fits right in. 

I might have a soft spot for moe art, but Hachishiro makes the sickest covers, I’m not even kidding. 

Set in a sort-of-fantasy world where same-sex marriage is accepted and animals ears are a thing, Haru is a shy, younger girl who is married off to Sensei, a novelist oblivious to Haru’s uncertainties on how to be Sensei’s wife. Yes the dynamic is a little stock. You might realize the part on arranged marriage is kinda problematic, but this is a not-serious moe manga that doesn’t go there. It’s nothing mindblowing, and it’s not got much of a plot, but it’s a fluffy and enjoyable slice-of-life piece on marriage and domestic stuff.

The art is cute af, and works very well to convey changes in their emotions.

9. Sweet Guilty Love Bites

Sweet Guilty Love Bites is about four cabaret hostesses who work at Club Rose. It’s separated into “Sweet Guilty” and “Guilty Love”.  In “Sweet Guilty”, Kirie returns from a bad night of hostessing, to discover Myata, a young woman sleeping in the streets near her house. In “Guilty Love”, Niina, a hostess and a single mother, has a one-night stand with Mayu, only to discover the next day that Mayu is the preschool teacher of her daughter. 

Despite the seriousness of what I just summarized, this is a light and fluffy manga with funny moments, and everything ends happily for our dear characters.Though sometimes, the manga struggles to shift from this lighthearted tone when addressing serious life issues that its characters face. 

The art is nothing stunning, but it’s decent and carries the plot just fine. 

8. Rock it, GiRL!!

Rock it, GiRL!! is about a street guitarist and vocalist, Kaname, who is approached by a talent agency to be part of a band. But Kaname is not an ambitous person and thinks little of her talents. Nevertheless, she decides to give a band a shot. She discovers, however, that a) the talent agency love her as a guitarist, but thinks lowly of her vocal ability, and b) the girl who will sing the songs in her place, is an arrogant tsundere, much in contrast to Kaname’s mopey, sappy self. Animosity develops between them, but they must rise above this personal drama as the show must go on. 

I have to say, the characters aren’t exactly sympathetic, but they’ve got real issues, they are offbeat, and are basically a fresh breath of air, away from the standard “sweet, nice, moe girls in a girl band” cliche. Plus the plot is wild, given the seemingly predictable premise. 

The art itself is simple, but in a weirdly cute and silly way. 

7. Murcielago

I would like to defend Murcielago’s presence on this list by saying that yes it is trash, HOWEVER, it is the kind of trash that nobody expects from the yuri genre.

Specifically, Murcielago is guilty-pleasure gore trash. It’s what we’ve seen played out again and again with a certain Western genre, but always with a male character depicted: violent movies centered on a loose-cannon anti-villain protagonist, who is tasked with being a criminal detective but who really does kill more people than the police are comfortable with. In the backdrop, some sort of vast conspiracy is brewing, where all the crimes that the detective solves, are actually linked together, and this whole conspiracy is somehow, quite self-aggrandizingly, all about this detective protagonist (we just don’t know how yet). 

Yes, that was weirdly specific, but we all know that’s an entire genre. 

In that sense, Murcielago is predictable, but it’s also very fun action-packed reading. Plus the gender and lesbian of its protagonist, is something quite unexpected, considering the “cute nice fluffiness” that characterizes most manga lesbians, and the male protags who dominate violent action comics for both manga and Western comics. 

You know she’s gonna be able to solve the crime, you know the Villain of the Week is gonna die, but there’s still a perverse excitement in finding out how she does it, and what ridiculous over-the-top crime features in the latest issue. 

Read beneath that surface, and Murcielago can be a little deeper than that. Our dear psycho-lesbian detective does spare people, and she justifies it by outwardly saying she spares “cute girls”, but that shallow explanation doesn’t hold water. She’s perfectly ok with mutilating and killing incompetent and immoral “cute girls”, which she has made no comment about. She’s specifically sparing a) completely moral “cute girls”, and hiring  b) dangerously competent, morally shadier “cute girls” as her proteges. In fact, when she meets a bomb prodigy, she has no qualms morally corrupting her from a) to b), because she really needs a demolitions expert. She’s secretly building a ruthless army, and we don’t yet know why.  

6. Lonely Wolf, Lonely Sheep

Lonely Wolf, Lonely Sheep involves the coincidential meeting of two girls who are coincidentially both named Imari, when their names are called in the hospital waiting room. Even more coincidentially, they are both there for left hand injuries. They declare their meeting one of Fate and the stars.

The dynamic is a little stock- we have the tall tomboyish landscaper “Big Imari”, contrasted with the petite girly artist “Little Imari”. But this short comic serves up more than just a plotless dose of sugary cute, the arc does turn serious. “Little Imari”’s injuries hide a dark secret, and the past is coming to claim her. 

5. Octave

Miyashita Yukino is a burnt-out pop idol- the industry is not what she thought it was, and she has no idea where to go with life from thereon. The people of her hometown do not welcome her, and believe she must have had to be a slut to get ahead as an idol. What really cuts deep in this manga, is the portrayal and young age of Yukino- the reality of the pop industry and the sacrifices she had make for her dream, such as dropping out of school, has aged her beyond her years. 

She then tries to make a living as a talent manager in Tokyo, but her life still seems devoid of purpose, she is drifting and still yearns for fame. During a regular trip to the nearby laundromat, she meets Setsuko, who is the sister of the laundromat’s owner. She finds some comfort in Setsuko’s company, but her problems do not disappear, and in fact the landromat is facing financial difficulties.

My main problems with Octave is that the characterization can be unsympathetic. Yukino is jaded, and certainly mature in some ways, but she is also emotionally childish- she can be exceedingly mopey, sometimes blames her problems on others, seeks external validation to an unhealthy extent, and generally creates unnecessary drama and conflict with Setsuko, who is emotionally flawed as well. Don’t get me wrong, characters should have flaws, but too much of it, and it rubs me up the wrong way and I kinda want to slap them. The plot also starts to slow rather than speed up as the manga progresses, which is just not to my taste. 

However, I would simply chalk those flaws up to the inconsistent quality of Octave, where the quality is high, the manga is amazing, the emotions, the issues and ennui from the characters and the atmosphere, can be quite intensely felt.

4. Gunjo

If you asked me what the manga embodiment of misery is, I might just point you to Gunjo. Gunjo tears your heart out, and then puts it back in for a split second, just so it can tear it out again. 

“It begins in the moments after a horrible crime has been committed. A woman has asked someone to kill her husband for her. She has asked someone she knows she can use – another woman, a lesbian, who has been in love with her since high school. The woman who requested the death is abusive, derisive. The woman who committed the crime is passive, almost apathetic. She flinches in the face of the other’s harsh words, but doesn’t fight back.” -(Okazu)

They then go on the run, but how far can they go before they’re caught? Does it make a difference that the cunning, abusive woman who has plotted the murder of her husband, was she herself horrifically abused by this man? Can something resembling love ever develop between two people so violent and broken?

Gunjo is amazing in its fan disservice. The murder succeeds because the killer seduces the man, and kills him while naked. But even in this scene, the violence and her disgust completely detracts from any sexual appeal of her nudity. Even in a kiss between the two main characters, their pain permeates.

My problem with Gunjo however, is specifically that the darkness never lets up. Perhaps it is my own sensitivity, but I found it very hard to complete it.

3. Pulse

It’s a full-color! I love full colors. Anyway, moving on, 

Pulse tells the story of Mei, a renowned heart surgeon who is also a cold-hearted playgirl. Lynn is a college student who needs a heart transplant, but she refuses to get one (the risks are high). When they meet, Mei feels a strange kind of pull towards Lynn, almost like she’s truly attracted for once in her life. As they grow closer, Lynn strikes a deal- if she can make Mei fall in love with her, she will get the surgery, but Mei has to be the one to do the surgery. Lynn trusts her.

The premise can create all sorts of problems, but that is surprisingly averted. Mei doesn’t pressure Lynn into sex, nor does she fake romantic attraction. Lynn doesn’t sacrifice for Mei. Basically, Mei is no asshole, she’s just uninterested in people, and Lynn is no pushover. Also, the art is mighty fine. 

2. Philosophia

Philosophia is about a college romance wherein the two anti-social, apathetic main characters, Ai and Tomo, bond over smokes and coffee. But these little things are not enough to exorcise their inner demons. As Ai starts to feel for Tomo, she becomes torn up over these emotions- her existing familial relationships are far from ideal, and that has fostered her inability to really understand love. Tomo is strange and disinterested, and it doesn’t seem likely that she will return Ai’s feelings. Furthermore, Tomo wants to leave the country, and the means by which she gets the money she needs, is best kept a secret. 

Philosophia has both realistic yet unique characters (they do not fall too far into “always mopey” or “always sweet and excitable”, a common problem even in this list), and also incorporates a series of sobering twists and turns.

1. Collectors

Nito Shinobu and Kanzaki Takako both love shopping. Shinobu collects books and Takako collects clothes. But as they move together, let’s just say there are spaaaaaace constraints. 

Collector is nothing grand or wild- this is the Happily Ever After, but Collector is important specifically for showing how life goes on, that it is comedic and fun and relatable. 

Yuri tends to face the opposite problem to Western LGBT material of the past. Older Western material is melodramatic and tragic, the gay identity of the couple is frequently mentioned and becomes a source of tragedy as they face persecution, which ultimately results in their suicide or murder. In yuri, the world is often isolated down to the couple- they have feelings for each other, but other characters rarely exist and if they do, these characters do not acknowledge the romance. “Lesbian” is never said, and talks of marriage are only meant as comedy. 

There has been a lot of praise for Yuri On Ice (which actually involves a male homosexual couple despite the title) for how the other characters are fleshed out too, for how they recognize and acknowledge the relationship between Viktor and Yuuri. There is a similar kind of realism going on in Collectors. There is a feeling of the world actually existing. 

Collectors gives attention to the tender moments, the little things, that make a relationship, instead of it all being grand kisses in front of everyone or a emotionally charged graduation speech. There is no feeling of such performance. Even the fights in Collectors are realistic, not the kind formed from wacky misunderstandings, and in fact the kind with a proper resolution and not where they leave, and then kiss and make up but the problem still exists.

Bookshelf Briefs 1/25/20

Again!!, Vol. 12 | By Mitsurou Kubo | Kodansha Comics – For better or worse, Again!! has always been unpredictable. I appreciate that it didn’t always follow the expected story beats, but at the same time, the inconsistency has been frustrating. For example, Imamura’s fluctuating dedication to the Ouendan had him proclaim at one point how much he wanted his grandma to see him cheering, and had that occurred it would’ve been a heart-tugging moment. But it didn’t happen. Instead, Imamura returns from another do-over (this time, flashing to a future in which his death inspired the other characters) with an apathetic attitude that eventually prompts him to return to 2014—a future where his grandmother is dead—without apparently a single pang about it. The ending is also kind of abrupt and ambiguous. In the end, I find myself wishing this had been more predictable, ‘cos at least it would’ve been more satisfying. – Michelle Smith

Chihayafuru, Vol. 18 | By Yuki Suetsugu | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – This volume is full of choices for Chihaya. It’s time to complete another career survey, and this time she fills in a more realistic goal than becoming Queen. It’s also less ambitious, however, and thus her karuta advisor comes to see her play at the Yoshino Club Tournament to ask someone with more experience whether Chihaya really has the potential to become Queen. Happily, she’s playing with more precision and focus than ever, but her next opponent is Haruka Inokuma, a 4-time former Queen, so her chances really hinge on how she fares in that match. (I suspect Taichi vs. Arata is in the offing, as well.) Too, the school trip conflicts with the Master/Queen qualifiers, and Chihaya must choose which side of herself she wants to cultivate more. I seriously love this series and am eagerly anticipating the next volume! – Michelle Smith

Dr. STONE, Vol. 9 | By Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi | Viz Media – Perhaps being interesting was too much to ask, but Taiju and Yuzuriha are at least contributing now that they’ve been added to Senku’s team—Taiju by being a literal tank soaking up damage, and Yuzuriha by apparently taking all the statues that Tsukasa smashed and sewing them together, presumably so they can be revived. If this seems farfetched, it’s no more so than finding the hospital where Tsukasa’s terminally ill little sister was located and unstoning her, which apparently also cures her illness. That said, Tsukasa may not be the end boss, as there’s another who’s been waiting for the moment to make his debut as a Big Bad. This continues to be ridiculous but also cool. – Sean Gaffney

Hatsu*Haru, Vol. 10 | By Shizuki Fujisawa | Yen Press – Best Couple get the cover, and I continue to be more interested in them than I am Riko and Kai, who are cute and all but also somewhat predictable. The four of them go to the hot springs, mostly as Riko is too nervous to be alone with Kai, and Takaya learns that Ayumi leaves herself wide open. After a cute but slight Valentine’s chocolate chapter, the best part comes when Ayumi gets a bad cold and Takaya visits, meeting her parents and finding out she’s actually pretty rich and her family are famous film creators. Ayumi is not yet ready to reciprocate Takaya’s feelings, but she does open up to him about wanting to seek her own path. It’s great to see, and we have three volumes left after this, so I’m sure it will work out. – Sean Gaffney

ROADQUEEN: Eternal Roadtrip to Love | By Mira Ong Chua | Seven Seas – While not technically manga, ROADQUEEN will likely still appeal both stylistically and thematically to readers who enjoy Japanese comics. In particular, the volume makes an excellent addition to Seven Seas’ catalog of yuri titles. ROADQUEEN originated as a short online comic, followed up by a much longer multi-chapter sequel. Both of these stories and an additional bonus comic are collected in this volume. Leo, the prince of Princess Andromeda Academy, only has eyes for Bethany—her motorcycle. At least until Vega arrives on the scene and steals Bethany away. Vega promises she’ll give the bike back, but only after Leo proves that she can be a decent lesbian (not to mention human being). ROADQUEEN is deliberately over-the-top, Chua obviously having a lot of fun playing with tropes, but it can actually be very touching, too. With an abundance of humor and a ton of heart, ROADQUEEN is an absolute delight. – Ash Brown

Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight, Vol. 1 | By Mikokuno Homare and studio HIP-CATs | Ghost Ship – I will admit that for a title that’s coming out via the Ghost Ship label, which means “borderline porn,” this is pretty cute. Saki is a fairly new, still virginal succubus who has been thrown out of her family home as she’s old enough to be finding men to “feed” on, but she’s honestly a bit too shy for all that. She is thus near starvation when found by Renta, an adult salaryman who is also a virgin. They clearly fall for each other pretty fast, but are also both innocent and clueless, so nothing happens… well, OK, something happens, she manages to “feed,” but the plot is still “will they ever actually do anything” and the answer is likely “no.” Still, for tease, this is relatively cute and sweet. – Sean Gaffney

Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 5 | By Sorata Akiduki | Viz Media – Welp, despite what I thought, the series does not end just because the main couple confessed. Indeed, most of the volume involves separating the two—not by design, but simply as Shirayuki has been invited to another country for a get together… her old country, where Prince Raj is. Indeed, after having it out with her a couple of volumes ago, Raj is seemingly turning over a new leaf, but that doesn’t mean he’s comfortable around her at all—he never expected she’d accept the invitation. Her bodyguard for this journey is Obi, and I note that this series is very good at having a bunch of guys in it who are not immediately in love with the heroine. Whether that’s true of the new villain introduced here, who knows? – Sean Gaffney

Teasing Master Takagi-san, Vol. 7 | By Soichiro Yamamoto | Yen Press – Having established that our leads will end up married with a child in the future, the series can now slowly move forward in increments, culminating in the final chapter here, where Nishikata, of his own volition, asks Takagi to the summer festival. But we’re also looking back, as we get to see how the two of them first met, and how Nishikata’s two basic qualities—a nice guy with great faces when he’s embarrassed or upset—inspire Takagi almost immediately. I’m not sure this is exactly when she falls for him, but she certainly has by the end of this book, which gives us another nice blushing reaction from her. Oh yes, and there’s still plenty of teasing. You expected something else? – Sean Gaffney

The Way of the Househusband, Vol. 2 | By Kousuke Oono | VIZ Media – This was another fun volume of The Way of the Househusband, in which Tatsu tries aerobics and yoga, intimidates a yakuza by offering him kitchen gadgets, eradicates stubborn stains in Masa’s laundry, plays volleyball with housewives, and more. I really appreciate that we saw more of Miku, his wife, this time around, and probably my favorite chapter is the final one, in which her parents drop by for a visit. Even though the fish-out-of-water setup in this series reminds me of the premise of Saint Young Men, The Way of the Househusband is not only visually superior (better art, great pacing to jokes), but has more heart, especially the bonus chapter in which we see Miku’s dad practicing for the moment when he asks Tatsu if he wants to go outside and play catch. I stop short of calling the manga sweet, but it’s wholly endearing. Highly recommended. – Michelle Smith

Yowamushi Pedal, Vol. 13 | By Wataru Watanabe | Yen Press – Yowamushi Pedal, Vol. 13 | By Wataru Watanabe | Yen Press – OK, I was probably foolish to think the race would end in this volume. We’re gonna have to wait for fourteen. But in return, we get so much shonen sports at its best. Midousuji does his best, but then crashes and burns. Instead, it’s Manami who gets the bulk of this book, where we discover that he enjoys shifting gears higher when he should be doing the opposite, just to make things even more fun. That said, he shouldn’t dismiss our hero, Onoda, who has his pedaling and his Pretty Princess song to keep him going forever. (Oh yes, and his mother shows up—apparently at rando, as he never told her about the race? This was the funniest part of the book.) Things should end next volume… well, at least this race. – Sean Gaffney

Bookshelf Briefs 12/26/18

Abara | By Tsutomu Nihei | Viz Media – Although it’s up for debate how directly or tangentially related Abara actually is to Knights of Sidonia, in my mind the manga is unquestionably a precursor to Nihei’s later work. Even if they take different forms, the two series at the very least share elements of the same dystopic vision, a grim future in which humanity’s survival is not guaranteed in the face of the existence of creatures known as Gauna. Collected in a single, deluxe hardcover volume (along with another of Nihei’s earlier stories, “Digimortal”), Abara feels like the beginning of something grand even while being a complete work unto itself. Rather than prioritizing a narrative telling a coherent story, more than anything else the plot serves as a vehicle to showcase Nihei’s artwork and the astonishing, nightmarish atmosphere it creates. And that is just fine—the illustrations in Abara are stunning, managing to be simultaneously  beautiful and grotesque. – Ash Brown

Again!!, Vol. 6 | By Mitsurou Kubo | Kodansha Comics – In the original timeline, the fate of the ouendan was sealed when Usami was responsible for a disaster at a baseball practice game. This time, Imamura is working very hard to make sure that doesn’t happen. True, he still blames himself for the team’s eventual loss, since he wounded the pitcher’s fragile ego, but some things have clearly changed as a result of his actions. Namely, Usami is able to get the crowd on their side, rallying their spirits with her cheers when all seemed lost, and earning some praise from the school principal for her leadership. Sometimes this series is frustrating in that characters have to work harder for the kind of sports manga successes that make me sniff, but man, there are a few brief, glorious moments in this volume that are all the sweeter for having been hard-won. – Michelle Smith

Giant Spider & Me, Vol. 3 | By Kikori Morino | Seven Seas – There’s a bit of seriousness at the start of the third Giant Spider manga, as we find out why our kidnapper is so upset about the spider—his daughter was clawed by a cute baby bear, and died from an infection from the wounds. The rest of the volume, though, is relatively sedate, and even the big finale, in which Asa appears to be either ill or grumpy but is merely molting is pretty low-key. And yes, it’s a big finale as this is the final volume, even though the author says they know Nagi and Asa have lots more adventures. This is the sort of series that doesn’t really need a dramatic climax, but Nagi has changed thanks to her giant spider friend—she’s now surrounded by other friends as well. This was sweet. – Sean Gaffney

Girls’ Last Tour, Vol. 5 | By Tsukumizu| Ywn Press – Each volume of this gets darker than the last, while still maintaining its mood of “two girls wander around a city in their tank.” Chito almost dies a couple of times, and sprains her ankle at one point, leading to Yuu attempting to do leader-like things, which does lead to some laughs. And there’s a fascinating sequence when they look at modern art in a deserted museum. They’re still going up, though, and are helped in this (after breaking into a building using more high explosives) by an AI unit that begs for them to turn it off. We also get a flashback to how their journey began, showing that they were kids staying with adults at one point, and that things are terrible all over. One more volume to go. Will it end in death? – Sean Gaffney

Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends, Vol. 16 | By Yomi Hirasaka and Itachi | Seven Seas – The big surprise in this volume is that the student council president happens to be Yozora’s older sister. We’ve seen for a while that family issues are a large part of what makes Yozora the way she is, and it’s no surprise that she’s in a relatively foul mood this volume, where the Neighbors Club and the Student Council go on a vacation together. Before that, though, we do get Yozora returning to the Neighbors Club, and a virtual reality game that I will just gloss over as I found it the weakest part of the book. And for fans of Kodaka and Sena, there’s the final scene, even though it’s just a dream that… Rika has? Why is Rika dreaming of things like that? A good, fun volume, though even more perverse than usual. – Sean Gaffney

Hakumei & Mikochi: Tiny Little Life in the Woods, Vol. 3 | By Takuto Kashiki | Yen Press – Adorable and relaxing take a back seat to ADVENTURE in this volume, as Conju is kidnapped while in a “rough section” of town, requiring a rescue that involves a lost liquor, hang-gliding, and lots of faux badasses who really aren’t all that. It’s a heck of a lot of fun, and really shows off our heroes at their best. They also do well taking Hakumei’s boss out for a day on the town, showing him that life is not just work 24/7. And there’s a chapter involving sweets and some badgers that is quite funny. I’m really enjoying this series, though it has to be said—Hakumei and Mikochi are a married couple, they’re just not aware of it yet. (Nor do I expect that to change.) – Sean Gaffney

Hatsu*Haru, Vol. 4 | By Shizuki Fujisawa | Yen Press – How much you enjoy this volume may depend on how much you can take “I am oblivious to even a direct confession” on the part of Riko, which makes Kai once again spend half the book holed up in his room wondering where everything went wrong. Even when he returns to school and tries to take up his playboy ways once more, things go wrong—right now Riko needs a good friend more than a boyfriend, and if Kai’s not there, well, maybe Takaya will do. (Honestly, Takaya seems to be like he has his own issues, which I suspect may get revealed in a future volume.) Will Riko ever get Kai’s feelings? Does she like him back? Is she even ready to move on? And what of Ayumi, the intrepid newshound? Hatsu*Haru is a well-written soap. – Sean Gaffney

Horimiya, Vol. 12 | By Hero and Daisuke Hagiwara | Yen Press – I imagine there may be some people who have dropped Horimiya by now, and I get it—Hori is sort of a terrible person, groping her friends and joking about getting “technical” consent, and still being upset that Miyamura isn’t hitting her like she really wants him to. She’s a bit of a teenage mess, really. Fortunately, the cast around her have their shit together, so I don’t think things will get that bad. Honestly, seeing Hori groping Sakura reminded me that Sakura is one of the group now—in fact, one chapter has other students surmise that she may have a harem of hot guys. I still love reading Horimiya, even as it’s gone from “romance I’d happily recommend” to “problematic fave.” – Sean Gaffney

Slumbering Beauty, Vol. 2 | By Yumi Unita | Seven Seas – For the most part this was an OK, not great final volume of this series. The majority of it deals with Nerimu’s master trying to recruit Yoneko for the job permanently, and Nerimu trying to point out that this would involve essentially dying. That said, there was a fantastic moment near the end, as Yoneko is shown that her neglectful parents started off with good intentions and are not merely terrible people. And Yoneko says that this is true, and acknowledges it… but also reminds readers (and Nerimu) that the majority of her time growing up has been spent unhappy, and seeing that her parents have good sides as well is not going to change that. Still, at least she decides to live on for now. Like other Unita series, this was weird but worth reading. – Sean Gaffney

Yowamushi Pedal, Vol. 10 | By Wataru Watanabe | Yen Press – The third and final day of the Inter-High begins and since Midousuji got a somewhat sympathetic backstory that might be the start of a redemption arc of sorts it’s time to introduce another odious foe, this time in the form of Eikichi Machimiya, a schemer from Hiroshima who’s got a huge grudge against Hakone due to how things played out the previous year. This is a pretty fun volume, since Machimiya organizes a huge peloton that gobbles up stray riders, Jaws-like, and Sohoku must contend with leaving Onoda—who worked so hard on previous days for the team—behind to be devoured. Tadokoro even cries. Of course, plucky Onoda can’t be counted out yet, but neither can Hiroshima! Looking forward to the next installment, as always. – Michelle Smith
