Chapter 1: Teh

“What if there are two ‘Nan Zhu Jue’…will that be alright?”

My chin hovers above Oh-aew’s upper arm, and he looks at me with those pleading, innocent eyes that make my heart hammer inside of my chest. His eyebrows raise slightly as he asks, as if he is worried about what I will say… even though I’m not quite sure myself.

I hum in agreement and try to nod, but I hesitate… my brow twitches slightly, giving away my apprehension.

Of course it’s alright if there are two… I’ve never had any doubt about that. But if I am one of them… If I am one of them, I’m terrified.

As I stare at him, he scrunches up his nose a few times, in the way that he always does when his back itches. I suddenly realize that my hand is still resting on his knee. I was so absorbed in the moment that had forgotten… My hand slowly falls from his knee and I reach to the side so that I can scratch his back, not looking away from his eyes for a second. Is this okay? Are you okay? I want to… I want to try…

My fingertips meet his body, just as they have many other times, and I drag my nails gently up and down his back. I keep looking at him, and he keeps looking at me. He suddenly starts to lean in, and I wonder if he’s going to kiss me… he’s still moving closer, and I think that I move in a little bit closer too… but then he turns around. He sits with his back facing me, and he is a bit curled in on himself, as if he is nervous or self-conscious.

He’s asking me to keep going. He wants me to keep going.

I want to keep going.

I turn around so that I’m fully facing his back, sitting with my legs crossed in front of me, and I continue to gently scratch his back with both of my hands. My eyes fall to his spine, and I drag my fingertips down it intently. I want to touch him… I want to touch him so badly that it terrifies me… I want to try… I want…

My hands flatten against him and I slide them up his back. He arches back against me in a way that makes my heart pound so forcefully that I can feel it in my ears. My face falls forwards and I lean into the space between his shoulder blades as I continue to feel his back. Oh-aew’s head falls back to rest on the top of mine, and I take a deep breath. The smell of his coconut shampoo sends a warmth to my chest and my mind feels a bit hazy. He rocks against me in time with the strokes of my hands along his back, and my ability to think clearly dissolves into thin air. My hands glide up to his neck and I tug gently on the ends of his hair. I move my hands to his waist and feel his sides, and it makes my chest ache.

I want to be closer. I want to be closer, but I can never be close enough to him.

I wrap my arms around his waist, uncross my legs and move to straddle him from behind. He immediately falls back against my chest, and I hold him up. His hands lightly grasp my calves as I move in closer and closer, and he leans back to rest his head on my shoulder. I can feel him breathing heavily against my ear as my hands drift across his stomach. My chin rests on his shoulder and I close my eyes, smelling his hair again. The coconut smell is so distinctly him, and I will never hate it again. I could never hate it again, even if I tried. My hands begin to rub in circles on his chest, and he continues to rock against me.

If I’m being completely honest, this feels so good. His hands are squeezing my legs, and his head is on my shoulder, and his face is so close to mine, and I never knew that I wanted this so badly.

I pull him closer to me as I caress his chest. I can feel his heartbeat, racing and pounding rapidly, just like mine. As I feel his chest, he caves in at the touch. He’s gasping quietly next to my ear, and I can’t control myself anymore. I’m breathing him in, and touching him so intently, and I grasp his shirt tightly between my fingers-

And then I remember.

I remember I’m here, and I remember what I’m doing… and I stop.

Did I really just let myself do all of this?

A wave of mortification and insecurity washes over me, and I let go, completely stunned with myself.

Why did I do that? Oh god… I can’t believe that I just did that…

Oh-aew looks back, eyes half-lidden and still dazed, and leans in to kiss me, but I turn away, completely ashamed.

I can’t. I can’t. I can’t. I can’t.

He looks so hurt when I glance up at him, and a pang of guilt stabs me in the chest. I don’t know what to do with myself. My arms feel like jelly and I feel tears welling up in my eyes. A breath gets caught in my chest as I manage to say, “I’m gonna go sleep downstairs.”

I stand up and leave the room, not looking back.
