The spring #migration of the Sandhill Cranes in Nebraska is one of world’s greatest #wildlife spectacles. Over a half million cranes stop in the #PlatteRiver valley each March. The flyway band runs from near Lewellen to east of Grand Island. The heaviest concentration of cranes is between #Kearney and #GrandIsland with another smaller band west of #NorthPlatte. I witnessed this amazing event last week in preparation to write an article about the cranes. I had seen it before as young boy growing up in Nebraska and 25 years ago when working as the photographer on a writer/photographer team. It was even more spectacular this year. If you haven’t seen it I encourage you to take the time next March to witness the marvelous mystery of #nature in central Nebraska. Note: You might catch them this year if you hurry. Since I had an Ubbe request a few days ago, and the prompts fitted together perfectly, I made this one into a sequel. The first one you can read here.

***Ubbe was planting kisses all over your back and shoulders, while you were laying naked, your head buried into the pillows. Tomorrow you’ll be leaving back to Kattegat, and no matter the talk you had with Ubbe the other day, you couldn’t help but feel anxious.

The past few months with him were more than pleasurable and you didn’t want to lose that, but the thought of him having a wife back home crept into your head again, making you think about staying and fighting for Ivar’s cause rather than facing the consequences of your own decisions and your own deeds. A cowardly behavior for a fierce shield maiden like you, some would say. It was easy for you to risk your life in battle, it was a thing you were used to. But the situation you were in now, the battle that was on the horizon, that was new. It scared you. What if he decides to stay with Margrethe? What if, once he sees her again, he realizes he still loves her? What if you were just a nice little distraction, a toy? But he wanted you to come with him, now did he? He told you you’ll make it work, but what if you don’t?

Buried deep in your thoughts, you didn’t hear Ubbe calling out your name, until he started to tickle you, knowing that will make you kick, scream, and finally pay attention to him. “There, Y/N!” He said, “now that I have your attention, I would like to know what it is that’s troubling that pretty head of yours?”

You tilted your head and pressed your lips together, leaning back on the wall, your gaze pointed at the ceiling. You didn’t want to trouble him with the same issues once more, but truth be told, he never gave you a concrete solution or an answer to this entire thing. How does one accept “I don’t know how, but we’ll handle it” as an answer? It wasn’t that simple matter to handle and your mind was filling with doubts. “It’s about Margrethe again, is it Y/N?”

You nodded silently, in fear of speaking a word, so you wouldn’t start crying. If there’s something you hated in this world, beside your enemies, it was appearing weak in front of others. “Y/N, we talked about it.”“No, not really”, you managed to whisper.He pulled you closer, cupped your face with his hands and made you look at him.“I might not have all the answers you want right now Y/N, but it doesn’t make me love you less, ok? Margrethe will have to accept the fact that you make me happy. You’re the only one I wanna wake up next to!”“You mean it?” You squeaked silently, barely controlling your voice, and those tears that were hidden behind your eyelids. The two of you were still far from the solution, and you were aware of that, but you had to believe in him. “Now, kiss me?” he whispered, leaning closer to you, and you gladly obliged.

The first time I heard the bell was as I lay in a hospital bed with Dylan in Room 9 not long after he came through the biggest fight of his life on Christmas Eve 2016 when his first round of IV chemo started working just in time for him to live to see Christmas Day. Ubbe

All his tranquility with the idea he was able to skip the cleaning day go down to the ground when he sees her risking herself like this. Comes closer slowly, speaking loud enough to avoid scaring her or causing an accident.

"Babe... Are you trying to turn me single? You fall from this shit and I'll have to ask Ivar to borrow me his wheelchair! Come down from this shit, please?"

Hvitserk

Stops in front of her nearly stupefied by what she's doing, but the anger and concern are clear on the wrinkles of his forehead...

"What in the actual fuck are you gods' damn doing over this fucking unstable murderous thing you built here? Come down this shit right now!"

Sigurd

It takes a moment from him to notice what she's exactly doing, but as soon as he assimilates what she built under her feet, he let go of the bags he was bringing into the house and runs to hold her by her waist as if she was made of crystal and was about to fall...

"Mighty Thor and Wise Odin, what are you doing, love? You gonna fall from this stuff, for the lords' sake! Come down from this! Fuck... my heart... You gonna end up killing me this way!"

Ivar

Comes closer, looking at what she's doing with his best angry expression. His tone is annoyed and the irony in his voice can tell her he's REALLY pissed off...

"So this is how you try to kill yourself when I'm not around to prevent you from doing stupid things, is that it? Come fucking down from this shit, please? Next time you want to clean this damn house, we'll fucking pay someone to do it. No more risking your life for damn clean shelves, was I clear?"
