about : Tom is away at SDCC while promoting Spider-Man Homecoming. Things start to go downhill as a Facetime call ensues and jealousy arises.

The ID caller showed up on your phone and you grinned, flopping down onto the bed as you answered the call. Tom’s smiling face filled your screen and you giggled, greeting him with a simple ‘hello Thomas’.

 “Y/N! It’s crazy here!” Tom shouted, “I’ve never seen anything like this before! There were thousands of people on the panel it was insane!”

 “Are you having fun?” You asked, a small yet tired simper reaches your lips.

 “Loads! Everyone’s amazing! Laura is here, Jacob is here, Tony is here, oh and Zendaya is here too!” He continued to ramble on about how everyone had secretly arrived to the convention but your heart sank at her name.

 Tom was an extremely sweet person, and he was definitely good-looking. Your biggest fear from letting him leave to Atlanta was him finding someone new. What if he found someone else prettier, smarter and better than you? Maybe he was already tired of you.

 And it didn’t help that Zendaya was a part of your worry. She was the kind of girl you’d always want to be. She was gorgeous and successful, not to mention extremely talented. You let your insecurity get the best of you sometimes and you would always feel a bit glum whenever you saw them together. However, Tom wasn’t aware that you felt that way.

 “Isn’t Zendaya pretty?” you piped up randomly, playing with the hem of your sweatpants.

 “Yes, she is. Why?” Tom sounded confused. He looked at something behind the camera and he laughed, slapping his chest.

 “Oh, that’s amazing, Z,” he chuckled before looking back at you on the phone, “sorry babe, were you saying something?”

 You were about to say something before he interrupted you, laughing again and talking to someone you could only assume was Zendaya. You could hear her laughter too and you flinched, feeling annoyed. Anger and jealousy was already bubbling inside of you. Rolling your eyes, you scoffed at how he was so oblivious to you on the phone as he dropped his phone to his side so all you could see was his pants.

 This was the first time in days he had facetimed you, and you felt so put off by how he wasn’t even paying attention to you.

 Pissed off, you pressed the end call button hardly, ending the facetime. You put your phone beside you and picked up your laptop, trying to calm yourself down.

 It seemed like the world wanted to rub everything in your face when you clicked on a random song on your spotify. Everything I’m Not by The Veronicas came on and you gasped, throwing up your arms in anger.

 “Oh, come on!” You yelled at no one in particular.

 The song blasted on your speakers and you sighed, letting it play.

 Your phone beeped once.

 Twice.

 Thrice.

 Tom’s face popped up on the screen, indicating a call coming in from him.

 You ignored it, letting the ringtone play amongst the loud tunes of The Veronicas.

 It stopped for a few seconds before ringing again. This time you decided to decline the call.

 A text came in. You peeked.

 Tom x : babe, what’s up? u  just hung up?

 You sighed, giving in. You could tell he was feeling really crappy about it as you watched a livestream of the convention. Marvel was holding a livestream for the interviews and you saw Tom pop up in the screen when you opened the website.

 His eyes were downcast even though he had a small smile on his face. Tom was less energetic and gave the interviewer half-assed answers. He kept crossing and uncrossing his arms and he fidgeted a lot on his feet.

 His iPhone was gripped tightly in his hand, and every few seconds he went to check it.

 Probably for my reply, you thought.

 When the interviewer ended, you saw him walk away from the camera. The interviewer was about to interview Lupita Nyong’o next when another text from Tom came in.

 Tom x : love i really am sorry. maybe u went to sleep already. Im sorry. I love you. Goodnight. Xx

 “Meh screw it,” you mumbled, pressing the call icon on his contact name.

 He picked it up immediately after the third ring.

 “Hello?” he said quickly.

 “It’s okay,” you sighed, slumping on the bed, “sorry, I just got jealous. I shouldn’t have hung up on you like that.

 “It’s just..I miss you so much Tom. And we haven’t facetimed in so long and.. I don’t know I was pretty pissed off by how you weren’t paying attention to me.”

 “I know, I know,” you could hear his guilt from across the line, “I’m really sorry. There’s just been a lot going on right now.”

 You sighed, “okay, now go and have fun. We can talk more later. I’m not mad at you anymore so don’t worry.”

 “Are you sure?”

 “Positive, I’ll be fine,” You lied through your teeth, even mustering a fake smile.

 Tom hummed, before speaking again, “I’ll call you when you wake up. I love you so much, Y/N. Goodnight, love.”

 “Goodnight,” you mumbled back as you hit the ‘end call’.

 Grabbing a pillow from the top of the bed, you clutched it tightly into your chest as sobs began to rack through your body. The tears didn’t stop flowing, even after half an hour.

 You’d think he would notice that you really weren’t okay.

 You missed him so much.

 And it already felt like, to you, he was slowly drifting away.

 The next morning was horrendous. You woke up to the feel of your soggy pillow and puffy eyes. Rubbing your face, you snuggled further into your duvet.

 There was no way you were going out today. Your heart felt the heaviest it had felt in a long time and nothing seemed to motivate you to get out of bed.

 You missed him too much.

 Making calls to everyone, you apologised for not feeling well and rescheduled everything.

 Nothing mattered more than the ache in your heart. If your mind wasn’t in the game, there would be no point in getting into the game in the first place.

 You decided to check your notifications and was surprised by the amount of texts Tom had sent in.

 Tom x : Good morning, babe. I hope you slept well. I’m out here in San Diego, in some bar. Missing you. 💛

 You stared at the screen, taking it all in.

 Tom got drunk last night.

 Yet, all his words seemed so sincere. Just before you could exit the chat, a new message came in.

 Instead, this was from Harrison.

 Haz O : hey y/n, i think you probably read the drunk texts tom has been sending. just want to tell you. tom has been drinking a lot for the past 2 hours. he’s upset, y/n. after he puked on the sidewalk, he cried. he cried about how much he missed you and how he didn’t deserve you. that you lie when you say you’re okay. he said that it would be easier if you both broke up. you could find someone better. so, stop being mad at tom. there's nothing going on between z and tom. If they did, i would've told you. he’s feeling so guilty for no reason.

 You felt hot tears gathering at the side of your eyes. He was beating himself up because of your jealousy. Guilt took over you as you fumbled to type out a quick reply. A plan was already forming in your head and although it involved a lot of money, you knew it would help in fixing this problem.

 It was probably too reckless and spontaneous, but you had enough of missing Tom and clearly, Tom was sick of missing you too.

 You : I’m getting on the next flight to San Diego. Take care of Tom for me. x

The SNES Collection

Ah here it is! The SNES! It is probably my favorite console from Nintendo. Released in August of 1991, and triggering the notable console wars. It was superior, at least in my opinion, to everything it went up against at the time. This could be argued until everyone is dead and gone, but to me, The Old Nintendo Nerd, SNES takes it.

This console is in much better shape. Extremely clean, near mint condition as compared to my NES. Zero yellowing, dings, dents, scratches, scuffs or marks really of any kind. It is as if it was just taken out of the box. The elusive box, unfortunately, that, like the NES box, is also long gone. In trying to obtain one of these I believe there was a great deal of resistance in getting a SNES anywhere near launch date. If I had to guess I would say it was somewhere in 1994 that I actually got a SNES of my own. Likely purchased by my parents as well. I obviously took better care of the console itself, but no such luck on the box.

Man, I wish I had kept that box.

So many incredible titles were released for this system. It has an absolutely stunning library behind it. I cannot wait to possibly get my hands on a few more of them. This collection is much smaller than the NES, with my N64 collection even smaller still. This was the result of moving to a more expensive platform as the NES was phased out, but still being a young teen with not much of my own money. The collection is small, though I still have some VERY good titles in here, take a look.

All in great shape aside for the one permanent marker “P” on Uniracers, damn it. Why did kids write on these things, what purpose could it ever serve? Ugh!

Even more so than the NES collection, there are gaps, where is Gradius III or Super Metroid? Pilotwings? F-Zero? We don’t even have a copy of any of the Mega Man X series. Or Mario Kart! For shame! Hopefully we can fix that in my quest to fill out my collection a little bit.

I’m not looking to get any complete sets with this quest. Let me make that perfectly clear. No that is so frightfully above my head at this point it isn’t even funny. It takes a level of both time and financial dedication I just could not begin to muster to go for a complete set. But I do want a nice, well rounded core set of really great games. To do that I do need to obtain a few select titles, including the ones above and maybe a few more. With any luck we’ll be rocking a respectable collection in a year or so, maybe two. I am under no impression that this will be completed in a few months. This will take patience, and persistence. Yard Sales, Garage Sales, Flea Markets, and maybe even LetGo and OfferUp.

LetGo and OfferUp have the tendency to have eBay syndrome though. To me it is still an attempt to get rid of something, like a Yard Sale, where the prices are “get it out of my house” low. But people still go on eBay, check prices and wind up pricing a dirty, yellowing Super Nintendo that they found in a box in the garage, have no idea if it works, with one filthy copy of Madden 95, no cords and one controller at $60. The $60 one they saw on eBay was pristine, tested and guaranteed working as well as bundled with all cords, two controllers and a clean copy of A Link to the Past.

You get my point, I ranted about this type of thing in the last post enough, I said there would be less ranting so I’ll let it be. For now. I’m sure it will come up again and again.

My favorite SNES game is probably Super Metroid. The game is an absolute masterpiece. From the controls, to the graphics, environment, ambiance and enemies, it is hands down one of the best games I have ever played. Period. I don’t think I could ever come up with a negative, it is a 10 out of 10 game.

And it is missing from my collection.

Womp Womp.

This one will be, as a friend put it, my white whale so to speak. It isn’t rare by any means, it is readily available on eBay and even in retail stores local to me, but for an astounding $50 to $60. If that does not speak to the quality of game that it is, I don’t know what does. I will have Super Metroid though. Mark. My. Words.

Of the games I own, while Mario World is up there, I think the one I played the most of is TMNT IV: Turtles in Time.

Played the hell out of this growing up, it was like the arcade game was on my TV. I loved it. Graphics, sound, music, controls, all top notch. Pitching foot soldiers into the screen to actually beat the boss? Genius. Solid 9 out of 10 game, a must have for collections of any size.

A very close second is Battletoads in Battlemaniacs.

Fantastic game, the graphics and animations are stellar, and it is hard. Boy is it hard. But it’s a Battletoads game, it has to be. I love the music too, you find yourself bobbing your head as you are playing. They even kept the pause beatbox.

This next one would be higher on the list had I played it more, but I honestly, and I am ashamed to say this, have never beaten, or even played very far into this game.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

I have it back out, and have started a new play through, so I will do it, I want to, the game is awesome. I just got this very late in my career of the SNES, I would say something like 1997, maybe even as late as 1998, and didn’t ever play it all the way through. I probably started a dozen games that always got overshadowed by another new shiny game on a newer console. Namely the Nintendo 64, which had been out for at least a year by the time I got my hands on a copy of this game. It will get finished. Oh yes. Soon.

A friend and I would rent a SNES on a weekend with a Monday holiday. Like Labor Day or Memorial Day. Not only would we be off from school, but we would also not have to return the console until Tuesday. Normally if you rented a console for the weekend you had to return it Monday. We would play all weekend long. Probably switching between 2 or 3 different games that we also rented. I remember one weekend in particular we rented The Lost Vikings, and Out of This World. The Lost Vikings is a fantastic puzzle platformer. With each viking possessing a different ability to help the three progress as a group through each stage. Music is fantastic, graphics are engaging and the control is right where it needs to be. We played this for hours.

The fact that we rented this game further reinforces my guess of me getting a SNES in 1994, since Lost Vikings was released in 1993. Out of this World I believe was some time in 1992. Though I am not 100% sure, I know it came out on Amiga in 1991, but as for an official SNES release date, I’m coming up empty. I’m merely guessing it may have taken a little time to port it to the console. SNES released second half of 1991. Puting the possible release of Out of this World first half of 1992. It could very well have been the same year though. I recently picked up the re-release on steam with better graphics. It was a trip to play I’ll tell you. I don’t have a copy in my collection so I have not played it for a very long time.

Ten out of ten console, I could go on for the foreseeable future on this one. But I’ll resist and snip it off here.

No pickups or video game buys thus far, total stays $83.09.

hey dudes.

i got all the way to 45 battles today. i lost a ton of them. countering mimikyu or tapu lele was kind of hit or miss for the team i picked. i kind of forgot how it was to battle large amounts of people in the, like, year i didn’t battle competitively. everyone picks the same 9 or 10 pokemon and you see at least two of them on every team. i battled ONE person who had a completely unique team and i just about cried from happiness. and then i beat him up. but it was close, and it was engaging, and it wasn’t getting my teeth kicked in by a choice band pheromosa or whatever.

at least nobody seemed to know what to do about my golisopod or nidoqueen. i didn’t see one other golisopod the whole competition, but i did see a few nidoqueens, and a whole bunch of arcanines. i saw a few alolan raichus, but i didn’t see any other kommo-os or tsareenas. so my team was half completely unique. which shouldn’t be happening when there are like 10,000 people in the competition. i also ran into the same person twice, which was pretty weird, but she rocked my socks off the second time i battled her. with a pelipper. i approved.

it was hard to find space on my 3-man team for tsareena most battles. i think it’s because since it was only 3 pokemon to each trainer for these battles, nobody really bothered setting up entry hazards, so tsareena kind of didn’t have a lot to do that my other pokemon couldn’t do better. i was expecting more stealth rocks and stuff.

then i spent several hours going through my pokemon bank and sorting everything out, and organizing, and rearranging. i was prompted to move stuff around when i was trading with some kid, and she kept asking for more of my pokemon, and would pounce on every rare or strong pokemon i accidentally passed over on my way to something else. so i put all the pokemon i’m willing to trade, every single one of them, on my game cartridge. there’s like 300 of them. i realized that there’s really no reason to keep around my old retired competitive pokemon from gen 4 and 5. the overhaul they gave breeding in gen 6 made a lot of my old pokemon with 2 perfect ivs obsolete, since now it’s easy to get 5 perfect stats. but all those pokemon are still level 60-80, so i imagine if i give them out on wonder trade they might reach someone like my brother, who was so excited when he got a level 100 alakazam. it made his day. he used it in battle against me every time we played against each other even though it had terrible stats.

i don’t actually know where my pokemon go when i wonder trade them, but i can hope that they reach some kid who likes them. i would take every magikarp in the world if it meant someone liked my salamence and used it.

that’s basically all i did today. i took care of the dogs, and mom and dad got home from vegas and immediately started yelling, and i talked with my sister for a little bit while we made some dinner. i was worried about running out of space in pokemon bank since i have a bad habit of keeping every pokemon i catch or receive in a trade, but i collated my collection a little bit and it looks like i’m only taking up maybe 40 or 50 boxes out of the 100 available. i have about 60 shinies though, i need to figure out what i’m going to do with those. for the past couple years i’ve just been keeping them in the bank and looking at them every now and then but they’re not getting used. i always meant to give them out to friends but i guess i never ended up having friends who wanted them. i gave my old shiny infernape to my cousin a few years ago for christmas and he never used it. actually the last time he ever battled me was well before that.

i miss having friends to play and compete with. i tried to get my dad to pick up pokemon since he loves competitive games so much but he wasn’t having it. my sister hasn’t even finished the story, and my brother just didn’t get the game this time. i should try to pick up other games again... i used to play all my multiplayer games with jim, but, you know. that’s not gonna happen.

diogi’s not doing too well the past few days. she seems happy enough, less anxious than she used to be, but her arthritis is really holding her back. her back legs barely work any more. she has so much trouble with the stairs i feel bad asking her to come down to go outside every few hours. at least there weren’t any accidents the last few days. usually when dad isn’t home diogi and wiley don’t even try to wait to go outside. 

anyway, that’s what i’m thinking about tonight. i don’t want to sleep, but it’s 12:40.

I was always super nervous and anxious thinking about these days because I always forced myself to do my absolute best. I hated the thought of competing with the people next to me. I used to run 10 laps and my best being 11 laps, which I thought was insanely good. The fastest was I think 12 or 13 laps but they werent in my class. I suppose I felt proud of what I accomplished, my classmates thought I was fast. I would wear shorts everyday in middle school. In 4th and 5th grade I used to run 3 miles every day in the summer with my grandpa and sometimes my sister  because I came home one day from a a Dr.’s Checkup saying that my cholesterol was pretty high. Seperate from my school’s 5k I only entered one 5k run with my grandpa who did the 7k run. I felt horrible because I was just overweight and I didnt find myself that attractive. It felt like some anime, going home editing decks, dueling in my friends garage drinking cans of Dr. Pepper and honey Twisted BBQ chips. Playing some Halo 3 and Pokemon Stadium 2 on the side. IT WAS SO FUN. When we would have a party in class or potluck I’d get 4 cups of Pepsi, Plateful of Doritos , Lays and Hot cheetos and my friends and I would whip out our decks. Living the life. At first our teacher assigned us only 10 minutes and expected us to comeback. 10 minutes of missing class was amazing. My group of friends and I felt so free, so powerful, passing the doors of other classrooms and students, walking where we shouldnt be. And when we would comeback she would reward us with homemade cookies. HOLY, our teacher was so kind. I cant remember if this was a daily thing, but we did this each time we had class. But every time we would come back deliberatly a little later. From intially 10 minutes we started coming back 15 minutes later, then 20. And I kid you not we started going out “recycling” for the entire class period which was about 50 minutes. IT WAS AMAZING. And we may had been in middle school, but we werent dumb. We were AVID students. Advancement via indpendent determination. We were the futures most brightest, up and coming. So we were thinking if we could somehow find more cans and bottles to fill up our garbage bags itd be more than enough reason to explain why we were coming back later than we were orginally suppose to. In summary: the Nuggets basketballed well, certainly better than the Goujons basketballed, the Goujons missed a lot of opportunities to basketball, and were worse at defending the basketballs.

The Basketball was of a good quality, the Nuggets star player was Nikola Jokić, a 21-year old Serb who looks like a cross between Novak Djovakic and Victor Krum. He is clearly a phenomonal talent. Given the majority of the times I've gone to watch professional sport it has been the rater genial cricket, this was quite the spectacle. There was no clapping of the oppositions efforts, (expect inadvertently when the DJ was playing 'if you're happy and you know it clap our hands' concurrently with the Goujons scoring). At one point in the fourth quarter, the Goujons had two penalty shots in a row, and onto the big screens came the offer 'if he misses both everyone gets free chicken'. He missed both, which means if I go to some chicken restaurant (the official chicken restaurant of the Nuggets) in the 72 hours with my match ticket, I can claim 8 chicken Nuggets.

A few comments:

1) The game began late, not at 3pm, but at 3.07, this irked me. 2) Basketball has 4 12 minute quarters, with each team having two timeouts in each quarter (one timeout being 2:30 minutes and one 1 minute timeout). All this means is that 48 minutes of sport is drawn out over a 2 hour period 2) Pre-game some children came onto the court and unfolded a large (5m x 8m ish) US flag, twinned with the singing of the national anthem. Everyone stood, out of sheer awkwardness, I stood too, joining in with this act of patriotism for social expediency's sake/ I can't help but feel that fascism has it roots in this same vein. Those around us all sang along, hands on hearts. 3) The timeout, quarter-time, and half-time shows kept me entertained well after the novelty of the basketball had worn off, entertainments provided for us included: (i) a series of c. 50 t-shirts 'falling' from the sky with some branded logo (I believe this feature was sponsored by Acme Bricks, the official Bricks of the Nuggets) (ii) a jangle your keys competition, with the winner winning some money (iii) Let's look at people in the audience, put them up on screen and make then kiss. 5 of the 6 couples shown were more than happy to oblige their adoring fans, but the steal of the show was a 60-year old man resolutely refusing to do such a thing, and his despondent wife trying to snatch a kiss of the cheek. It made great television (iv) Rocky the Mountain Lion (the Nugget's mascot) finds a baby and then shows the baby aloft to the crowds, with the lights dimmed and the Lion King 'Arsene Wenger' music playing (v) The Simon Says half time show in which the America's most famous (his words, not mine) Simon Say's Simon (who was also a 'Professional Simon Says') played Simon Says with the best Simon Says players in Colorado. 15 men and 15 women (for some unbeknownst reason, segregated) played Simon Says. (vi) The suitcase race: Two grown men ran across the court picking up clothes and putting them in a suitcase and then ran back. The winners wins a suitcase. (vii) Three equally grown men cheering wildly as three cars 'raced' each other on a screens running all the way around the stadium. Given these men in no way had any effect on the cars, this seemed bizarre. (viii) The Cheer-a-veteran segment, in which a local US Army veteran is placed in the centre of the court, with cheerleaders on either side of him, as the big screens show footage of this man's army service. Everyone stood and cheered him. (ix) A booze-company sponsored edition of 'which of these three cups has the Nuggets' logo on it's bottom' what closely as they move around (x) Lookalikes in the audience. Let's look at people in the crowd and suggest who they look like, and put it up on the big screen (xi) Steel Drummers steel drumming (xii) The Nuggets' mascot (refer to bullet point 3 subsection iv for further details) throwing a basketball over his head and into the hoop (xiii) People throwing pizza coupons into the crow (4) There was music constantly. Whatever the basketball equivalent to the sound of leather on willow is, you couldn't here it. There was all a regiment / division / unit / legion of cheerleaders. (5) The Pepsi Center, a 10 minute walk from my apartment, is where the 2008 Democratic National Convention hosted, and Barack Obama officially became the Democrat nomination. Oh, to be back there... The overall impression I was left with was that of a Butlins holiday camp, or a Scout camp. I was half expecting there to be a Glamorous Grannies contest or a Space-hopper race. However, this entertainment is clearly there to make the event more attractive to those who don't like basketball. The whole thing was therefore, uttterly bizarre, but a very pleasing experience none the less. I wish the Nuggets all the best over the rest of the season, I hope to see them win out against the San Francisco schnitzels, the Albuquerque Escalopes, the Chicago Chow Miens, and the Baltimore Breasts.
